  1. In The Genes (8:07)
  2. Love Music (6:35)
  3. Love Can Set You Free (6:20)
Review: Long-serving disco-house fusionist Hot Toddy (AKA Crazy P co-founder Chris Todd) is in a loved-up mood on this rather tasty three-tracker. Surprisingly, it's his first solo single for some five years, and his first for House of Disco. It's the breezy, funk-fuelled A-side "In The Genes", in which Todd expertly fuses together elements most often found in proto-house, NYC boogie, early house and disco-funk records, that stands out, though the standard naturally remains high elsewhere. "Love Music", for example, is a wonderfully sauced-eyed stroll through dreamy deep house/disco fusion, while closer "Love Can Set You Free" sits somewhere between stripped-back disco-house, percussive boogie and Idjut Boys style dub disco.

Disco De Los Muertos EP (yellow vinyl 12")
Cat: WD 54. Rel: 16 Feb 18
  1. The Chuco (6:28)
  2. Catch Me (6:26)
  3. Playing A Groove For An Hour (6:43)
  4. The Camel (6:57)
Review: Having made his name with a string of fine rework releases on the acclaimed Tugboat Edits imprint, Guillermo "Hotmood" Gonzalez makes his first appearance on Whiskey Disco. Disco De Los Muertos ("Disco of the dead", if our Spanish is up to scratch) is predictably full of cheeky dancefloor moments that should appeal to both house and disco DJs alike. Our pick of the bunch is probably the low-slung "Playing The Groove For An Hour", where fizzing synth stabs ride a ridiculously rubbery slap bass riff and rolling house groove. That said, the deeper and dreamier "The Camel" is rather good, while the horror-tinged Mexican funk-goes-house fare stretched across the A-side is both rock solid and highly playable.

Review: Our butts haven't stopped shaking since "Hotmood Volume 4" earlier this year and already the respected Mexican vibe maestro/edit king/groove sculptor Hotmood is teasing us with another sweet disco dispatch. As yet untitled, each of the four cuts sparkle and shimmy with his signature warm flare. From the belting vocal harmonies on "Track 1" to the loose-limbed percussive and wonked-out bassline of "Track 4", Hotmood has cooked up another superlative vibration fest. Start counting down the days...

  1. Junkie (6:51)
  2. Junkie (Loz Goddard remix) (6:22)
  3. Dis.Co (6:28)
  4. Cosmic Groove (6:43)
Review: That whacky bunch the Whiskey Pickle gang are back at it again, firing up the choice disco edit engine for another freewheeling ride into the land of the sophisticated party. Hotmood is at the wheel, and his style is firm but laid back, just how you want your driver to be. "Junkie" is a consummate groover, not least when it drops down into a gorgeous bass lick. Loz Goddard does a fine job of chopping the track into a more housey thrust, but then it's back to a more vintage feeling on the B-side as "Dis.Co" channels the Salsoul spirit to great effect. "Cosmic Groove" is a punchier jam, but it's still brimming with the evergreen energy of classic disco.

  2. Raw Data (6:48)
  3. I Can Be You (6:47)
  4. You Can't Play That (6:22)
Review: Guillermo Gonzalez aka Hotmood is a funk/disco producer from Mexico. Recently on fire with a string of releases for the labels Star Creature, Whiskey Disco and Tugboat Edits, Hotmood shows no sign of letting up with four more disco edits for the London based Editorial label. "Don't Care" is a certain sought after classic from 1979 which has previously been a favourite of Joey Negro. On the flip, there's one that will really appeal to those in the know on the saucy and electric boogie-down jam "I Can Be You" that sampled the same hook as a certain J.B. Boogie hit from a little while back. Finally he offers up a right lo-slung gem in the form of "You Can't Play That". This slo-mo jam is so funky and looped to perfection. A bunch of respectful edits for those that know their disco history and for serious DJ use only!

Mr Funkyman EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DFV 007. Rel: 30 Apr 18
  1. Let's Ride (7:11)
  2. Mr Funkyman (7:09)
  3. My Disco Collection (6:16)
  4. Clean Cuts (5:39)
Review: Hotmood is up next on Disco Fruit with some brightly coloured tracks that sit just right in the bowl next to previous efforts from Funky Junkie, Gradient Logic and more. "Let's Ride" is low down and nasty where it counts, but also manages to be smoothly finished so as to keep the crowd happy. "Mr Funkyman" gets a little jazzier, looping up where it counts to keep the sweet, sweet groove rolling as long as needed. "My Disco Collection" is a more rugged affair rolling at a slower tempo, and the appropriately named "Clean Cuts" gets busy with a loop that could roll on all day without anyone tiring of it.

  2. Girl, I Know

Review: As the Well Rounded label heads sadly towards its final release, its Individuals imprint puts out one of its most unique records to date. Despite their name, this anonymous trio make music that combines boogie, synthpop, and the slowed down textures of DJ Screw and his contemporaries. The title track sounds like a cross between FunkinEven and James Blake mashed together and slowed down to 33rpm, while "Girl I Know" channels classic '80s pop with the kind of pitched down vocals so beloved of Tri Angle's Holy Other, and "Curious Lady" brings on a more elegiac soundtrack vibe for the later hours.

  1. Easy Does It (5:45)
  2. Kelly Green (4:21)
Review: This more than handy 7" single brings together two classic disco-era cuts from soul legend Willie Hutch. A-side "Easy Does It", which was originally featured on 1978's In Tune album, features Hutch in full-on Curtis Mayfield mode, singing passionately over a jaunty, jazz-funk influenced backing track laden with swirling strings, choral backing vocals (think Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" album) and Dexter Wansel style synthesizer solos. It's undoubtedly one of Hutch's finest moments and deserves to be in any serious soul head's collection. Flip for 1979's "Kelly Green", a sumptuous soul slow jam in which Hutch pines over a lost lover.

  1. You Know How To Love Me (7:35)
  2. Living Inside Your Love (6:12)
Review: Two Arista classics from 79/78 respectively, the cult (not to mention heavily sampled) charms of Pittsburgh soul queen Hyman are presented immaculately right here on this heavyweight vinyl double-A. "You Know How To Love Me", taken from the 79 album of the same name, is a straight up disco stomper that should be recognisable to all with its distinctive horn fill and rousing backing vocals while "Living Inside Your Love" (from her 78 album Somewhere In My Lifetime) is a slinkier, sultry affair with some sizzling scat vocal flare and harmonies that will have you weak at the knees. It's all love.

All equally velvet, "Hotel Jama" feels even more welcoming with its glistening strings, "Modri Tunel" is all about the deep dubby dynamics while "Kozmetika" while have you hot shoe shuffling quicker than you can say vibraphone. Finally "Terminal E" will fly you first class to wherever your head needs to be. Stunning, as always.

  1. Take You To Love (10:49)
  2. Miracles (14:05)
Review: Icelandic producer Olafur Breidfjord has enjoyed a stop-start career as Ilo, delivering a well-regarded debut album in 2001 before disappearing from view for 15 years. Happily, he's been on fire since returning to action in 2016 and here follows up fine outings on Rebirth and Foto with a fresh EP for Lagaffe Tales. A-side "Take You To Love" is something of an epic, with Breidfjord working a deliciously deep and woozy, sub-bass heavy groove for six minutes before beefing up the beats, throwing his hands in the air and dancing maniacally towards a breathless climax. Astonishingly, flipside "Miracles" is even longer, with the talented Icelander stretching out a fluttering, dreamy, string-drenched deep house workout over 14 mesmerizing minutes.

  2. Vahagn - "Voltage Controlle" (6:15)
  3. Toby Tobias - "Trigger Output" (7:19)
  4. Additional Hardware - "Resistors & Capacitors" (5:54)
Review: In Flangranti's latest project is an interesting one. It features them, and others, creating new tracks from elements of previously unheard recordings by obscure 1980s Swiss outfit Schaltkreis Wasserman, most of which were apparently made under the influence of LSD. The resulting tracks do a good job in putting the cosmic synthesizer refrains and vintage electronics in a new light. For example, Toby Tobias's druggy "Trigger Output" skillfully combines a vintage breakbeat hardcore rhythm and with decidedly psychedelic electronics, while Vahagn's "Voltage Controle" is a sparkling chunk of stylish Italo-disco. Also worth checking is the chugging, arpeggio-driven synthesizer exotica of Additional Hardware's "Resistors & Capacitors", and the intense percussive madness of In Flagranti's "Side Strain".

Review: The Not An Animal crew follows up excellent releases from Man Power, James Hadfield and Ian Blevins last year with this 12" of soaring 80s-inflected dancefloor boogie In:State & Giuli. It's actually a dreamy remix of "Vizitoz" from Lauer that opens up the 12" before the pulsing, wavey throb of the original kicks in. "Plus One" on the B side chops up the beat a little, but the same fulsome synth lines shape out the track. That leaves it to Lizards to wrap the record up with their own version of "Vizitoz", bringing a motorik thrum to the track that should nudge it into the bags of all manner of DJs from the cosmic warm-up crew to the EBM-favouring techno peak timers.

  1. Queen Of My Universe (3:15)
  2. Up (3:59)
Review: The first of two major Infinity licences from AOTN this month, this is a significant excavation even by renowned digger label founder Fryer's standards. Usually seen passing hands for well over L500, this second and last single from the relatively unknown troupe Infinity is a stone cold jam that's been sought after for many many years. Absolute rare groove sleaze on the bass and horns, "Queen Of My Universe" sparkles with soul in every element. Meanwhile "Up" strips things back even further with an uptempo disco twang and tight Q&A vocal play between the band. Infinite love for this one!

Review: The second of two AOTN Infinity 45s, AOTN dish out another superb reissue from the late 70s US seven-piece. Serious funk soul once again; "Party Man" lives up to its name with a thumping groove, slinky slap bass licks and big call and response vocals. Instant feels. "Put Everything In Place" is a little more restrained but still very much party minded with its absurdly lavish bass walks, jaunty piano and delicious Faze-O style falsettos. To Infinity and beyond!

  2. Weekend Mouille (5:42)
  3. Ecoute Mon Coeur (5:40)
  4. Soul Ma Coco (5:49)
Review: Dr Love is a veteran tastemaker and vinyl junkie on the Montreal scene, while Laura Ingalls is a wandering French person of no specific sex that has recently landed in the French Canadian city. They both bonded over their love of anything disco and poutine: the main local dish which consists of potato, cheese curds and gravy. Dr Love likes to dig, but doesn't really produce while Laura Ingalls is not the most efficient digger and only seems to unearth old Folk and obscure Arabic music for their personal collection - but has serious production skills. On "Oh Mon Amour" they sample a very hard to find classic from the famous Parisian disco Le Palace in the early 80's: when it was released while "Weekend Mouille" is an odd jazz disco thing from the mid 70's. On the flip, "Soul Ma Coco" is said to be a cover of a certain Manu Dibango track. This version kept the melody and changed the lyrics slightly.

Review: A lot of Inigo Vontier's early material was confined to the digital realm, but now the Mexican DJ and producer is starting to get recognition on wax for his heady brew of old methods and a taste for the freakier end of the party spectrum. This 12" for Mexican label Calypso leads in with the strangely unsettling but strident "Wirikuta," before the snappy surge of tightly wound tech variation "Marakame" comes leaping into ear shot. "Maxa" marks out its own unique space with a heavy broken beat excursion, leaving it to Dreems to ruminate on "Wirikuta" for a closing remix.

Review: Less than three months have passed since the first volume in the Cult Edits series arrived in stores, but already the Multi-Culti crew has rustled up another quartet of weird and wonderful reworks. We're particularly enjoying the bizarre chanted vocals and druggy electrofunk flex of Inigo Vontier's brilliantly madcap "Cha Cha Cha", though the dense, post-punk Afro-tribal romp that is Dreem Lion's "Acid Se Con Do" is also superb. If percussion-laden heaviness is your thing, be sure to check Alex Le Tan's rework, which brilliantly breathes new life into a chant-tastic chunk of carnival ready drum circle insanity.
