  1. Yonge Street Jam Band 1 (4:23)
  2. Yonge Street Jam Band 2 (4:20)
  3. Yonge Street Jam Band (Jonny 5 Discomix) (8:58)
Review: Forever faithfully mining the past to keep your shelves stocked with gems that might have otherwise been consigned to history, Emotional Rescue turn their attention towards Carl & Carol Jacobs' cult slice of early house music, and what a treat it is. "Yonge Street Jam Band" comes in the form of two mixes that serve as impeccable examples of late 80s club music in all its culture spanning glory. The playful sample slicing and triggering of the second mix is the winner, although the vocals on the original version are equally on point if you want a little more soul in the mix. Jonny 5 then steps up on the flip for a bold but measured re-rub that stretches the vibe out for nine minutes of perfect party fodder.

  1. Don't You Want My Love (7:51)
  2. Don't You Want My Love (Dimitri From Paris Classic re-edit) (6:17)
Review: During her heyday in the late 1970s and early '80s, disco chanteuse Debbie Jacobs released some killer material (see "High on Your Love" and "Undercover Lover", for starters). "Don't You Want My Love", an energy-packed, orchestral disco smasher originally released in 1979 to promote the singer's debut album, is also up there with the best of her output. Here, the Paul Sabu produced original version gets the reissue treatment by Defected offshoot Glitterbox. Sabu's original club-length version sits astride the A-side, with Dimitri From Paris providing a "classic re-edit" on the flipside. His version sticks fairly close to the original, offering necessary nips and tucks here and there whilst steering clear of contemporary production trickery. Naturally, it's a rock solid rework from a true master of the scalpel rearrangement.

  1. Take Time (vocal) (4:40)
  2. Take Time (extended) (6:14)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Once more scouring the annals of disco history for the hottest jams, Best look beyond Italy and snap up this much-vaunted slice of American funk from 1982. While second hand prices can get out of control, it's not hard to hear why this glittering prize from Jagg would be so coveted - it's got everything. Jazz-leaning slap bass, mean synthesizer chops and soaring vocals - "Take Time" is prime to set the party off, and no longer is it the preserve of wealthy collectors. Originally a single-sided affair, Best have done the right thing and filled the B-side up with an extended version to let that groove roll on even longer.

  2. The Throw (Dreems Sounds Of The Universe remix part 2 & 3)
Review: Sydney's electro-psychedelic-indie outfit, Jagwar Ma, drop two new mixes of their 2013 hit "The Throw" on the Multi Cut label. There's three parts in all, where the first one, Dreems Sounds Of The Universe Part 1, is made up of a delicious blend between acoustic instruments, delicate electronics and wailing vocals; the piano keys riding across those desolate soundscapes with utter class. Parts 2 and 3 enter party mode, with subtle bursts of 303 acid mixing nicely within the original track's poppy nature.

  2. Give Me A Reason (Michael Mayer Does The Amoeba remix) (6:54)
  3. Give Me A Reason (Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown - part 1) (9:42)
Review: After Australian band Jagwar Mar released their album entitled Every Now & Then in 2016, they now appear with an accompanying remix release for their fans. Under the direction of mastermind Jono Mar, the album was created after three years of intense worldwide touring, supporting such bands as The XX, Foals and Tame Impala. It fulfilled all the expectations of their 2013 debut Howlin'. "Ordinary" (Rebolledo Very Ordinary cut) is far from the description: this one's a great shuffling little number, with no shortage of laser zaps. "Give Me A Reason" (Michael Mayer Does The Amoeba remix) is without a doubt the real winner on here, where the Kompakt main man serves up another sublime and emotive exercise in life affirming dancefloor drama. On the flip, "Give Me A Reason" (Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown - part 1) sees the UK dance veteran deliver a lo-slung and definitely slo-mo take on acid-indie dance, as best as you'd expect from the man.

Know What You Want (7" + poster)
Cat: MEL 8. Rel: 08 Dec 17
  1. Know What You Want (4:47)
  2. I'm Gonna Make It (2:58)
Review: So far, Floating Points' reissue-focused Melodies International label has barely put a foot wrong. As you'd expect given his crate-digging credentials, each chosen release has not only been obscure or hard to find, but also exceptionally good. Predictably, this one is, too. Gloria Jay's 1977 single "Know What You Want" is a heartfelt chunk of saccharine soul featuring some particularly good jazz-funk style solos. Speaking of jazz-funk, this influence comes through further on the slightly more disco-minded, dancefloor-friendly flipside, "I'm Gonna Make It", whose jangling piano riffs and goodtime groove are almost impossible to resist. As ever with Melodies International, the packaging - which includes a foldout poster tucked into the sleeve - is also superb.

  5. Neo Experience - "Human" (3:26)
Review: As with its' 12 predecessors, the latest compilation style EP from publicity-shy French diggers Unlimited Love gathers together an impressive selection of sought-after gems. This time round, many of the cuts are taken from eye-wateringly expensive and hard-to-find private press records. Check, for example, the fizzing 1982 boogie of Jeancy's "Reservation", the sweet breeziness of Karizma's "Will You Dance With Me" (an original 7" copy of which would set you back around L300) and the skewed, orchestra-smothered quirkiness of Marion Javius's "Waiting in the Wings". Elsewhere, Makonde's "Manzara" is a heavy chunk of psychedelic-minded Afro-funk, while Neo Experience's sumptuous "Human" is a lesser-known chunk of Philly soul bliss.

Review: Classic freestyle vibes from 1985: original copies of this on Nezz have been known to pass hands for over L100 but thankfully City Of Dreams have had the good grace to commission a reissue. The original has that raw honesty that many freestyle records are cherished for; the synths are loose, the mix isn't polished and Jennette's girl-next-door voice sounds real and untouched. The dub is special, too; a splice and diced 808 throwdown, it still sounds just as excitable and funky as it did 30 years ago.

His own productions have featured on a who's who of labels from Soiree, Rawax, his own Fathom imprint and of course London's Landed: who for Record Store Day 2017 present this. Treat yourself to his new edit entitled "On The Floor" (Studio 54 mix). We sure know this one: it's an oldie but a goodie and Jensen shows his deft hand at re-splicing a classic disco tune for modern dancefloors.

  2. Ari Bald & Martín Miguel - "Every Body Party" (6:09)
  3. Tilman - "Thinkin Of It" (5:22)
  4. Higgins - "Looking Back" (7:55)
Review: More from NYC party crew Kaviar Disco Club, who follow up their rather fine debut EP of reworks with a second selection of pumped up, floor friendly tweaks. To kick things off, they offer up a previously unheard "Well Being Dusted" mix of vintage Jevantte cut "Mr Piano Man", breaking up the beats a little to bring the deep house cut's smooth grooves bang up to date. There's more of an old school disco flavour elsewhere across the EP, with Ari Bald and Martin Miguel's smooth, rolling house take on a horn-toting, synth-heavy electrofunk classic ("Every Body Party") being followed by the bumping, hard-spun disco-house thrills of Tilman's "Thinkin Of It". Higgins' "Looking Back" takes a similar approach, with the producer working his magic on a soaring orchestral disco workout.

  5. Human Emotion (3:52)
Review: Having started his career by making synth-heavy cuts inspired by proto-house, disco and NYC boogie, Jex Opolis has recently moved further towards Balearic territory. Human Emotion, the New York producer's final 12" of the year, smartly touches on all of these influences and more. "Human Emotion (TV Dub)" is loved-up, slick and groovy, with cut-up vocal samples rising above a dreamy, drum machine-dominated groove, while "Fifth Wind" layers saucer-eyed piano flourishes and head-in-the-clouds chords over a killer analogue bassline and near-horizontal rhythm track. Elsewhere, "Botanico" is a Fairlight-wielding chunk of Balearic instrumental synth-pop, "Infinity Room" sounds like Andreas Vollenweider jamming with Moon B, and closer "Human Emotion" is a low-slung, proto-house style treat.

Review: New York's JKRIV is shaping up to be something of a nu-disco revelation, particularly for his love for all things 'outernational'. In fact, then DJ-producer has released nothing but hip-swinging Latin funk over the last few years, and this RSD 2018 release for Brooklyn's Razor-N-Tape, Ferias 77' Reworks, is testament to that. In here, you'll find nothing but sick reinterpretations of classic Brazilian funk and disco, re-moulded to fit the modern ear and, of course, the modern sound-systems. Subtle swings of boogie-filtered disco, deep and sensual house, and a whole load of trippy-hop make this a blazing summer belter, and there's even a slow, Balearic rework of Edu Lobo's infamous "Ponteio".

This time around it's over to New York City's Jason Kriveloff aka Jkriv, who works that magic razor once again on these wonderful re-edits. On the A side we've got Red Sharon (see what he did there?) with "Handle It" (JKriv RNT dub) which takes a right diggers delight into sultry, late night territory and sure to burn up any dancefloor. On the flip is Marashal (oh come on already!) with "Socket Rockin". No guesses what's going on here but just for the record: it is one funky and soul filled celebration and most of all, a respectful edit.

  1. You (5:52)
  2. My Music (5:42)
Review: Another gem from the archives of Des Moines' favourite son: Samuel Jonathan Johnson - gets a much needed official reissue here. Johnson came from a family of musicians who were originally based in the Midwest. When he was six years old, the family moved to New York City, where he played for several churches and quickly gained notoriety as one of the city's finest musicians. His LP My Music was released in Europe to modest acclaim, but never received recognition back home. Disappointed in the outcome, he went into early retirement as a recording artist and began to work with local bands in the New York area. The 12" mix featured here of "You" combines the original funk riffs, captivating string arrangements and uplifting piano with a squelchy lead synth - which elevates the track to a whole new level. The aforementioned "My Music" on the B side is now a favourite with the diggers - spiritual soul from the one and only Samuel Jonathan Johnson.

Consistently moving with the times, his discog is pack from soul right through to boogie funk, which is where we're at right now with this stunning, rare and heavily demanded 1982 45. Review: Jonny 5 can rightly be considered a mainstay of Bahnsteig 23 now, as he returns to the label for the third time. It seems that the main source of inspiration for this latest opus from the intermittent producer has been the Indian sub continent, and he's channeled those vibes into three wild and wicked tracks for the weird dance party. "Bengali Dub" channels the proto electro vibes of 80s synth pop and shoots it through with some illustrious sample drops, while "Simha" works more like a particularly bold edit loping in a polyrhythmic fashion that will have the floor hopping like mad to keep up. "Tum Tum" turns up the heat on the B side with a deadly electronic revision of an Indian classic.

Review: Following initial appearances on Bahnsteig 23, Jonny 5 returns on the Pleasure Wave label with more of that well-travelled, groovesome voodoo for all manner of sonic wayfarers. "Apocalypse" in particular is a stunning piece of tom-powered menace, but it's quickly offset by the bubbling cosmic delights of "Electronix". "Firedance" on the B-side channels some righteous 80s industrial and synth pop tropes to create it's own kind of drama, and then "Stardriver" finishes the EP off with some pulsing, noirish wave synths and gaseous atmospherics. With the styles shifting from track to track, Jonny 5 has once again done a sterling job of keeping his options open and keeping us locked expectantly into his delirious sound.

Review: Having already reissued the Joubert Singers disco classic "Stand On the Word" in its original form earlier this year, French label Favourite get busy with a remix-heavy accoutrement in twelve inch format. Those new to the art of collecting classic discotheque vinyl will no doubt be tempted by the appearance of the much vaunted Larry Levan mix, which turns out wasn't actually by the legendary DJ but instead the equally brilliant and much missed Walter Gibbons. Regardless, the remix is a classic in the disco canon, and is complemented by three all new renditions. Long term label associate Patchwork comes through with a nicely judged remix that realigns the groove to a slinky Philly disco swagger, while on the flip Austrian duo Panoptikum Arkestra go for a stripped back dubby beatdown angle. Local Parisian production talent Walter Mecca calls on the spirit of p-funk and Dilla for a nicely blunted hip-hop take to round out this 12" nicely.

Review: It's well known that People's Potential Unlimited boss Andrew Morgan has some serious crate digging skills. Even so, he continues to amaze with the obscurity and quality of the releases he chooses to reissue. Serious collectors have long sought out "Let's Ride" by guitarist Willie Lee Jnr under his occasional Junei alias. Originally released on 7" back in 1987, it's a killer chunk of synthesizer-heavy electrofunk blessed with some serious eyes-closed guitar solo action. Flipside "You Must Go On" - originally the A-side of the '87 release - is fantastic, too, offering a near perfect blend of sun-kissed Balearic attitude and smooth '80s soul grooves.

Living up to it's dignified and reserved billing, this fifth release on the offshoot finds the Nijmegen-based Peeman laying down some luscious, colourful disco vibes that will brighten up any sun laden afternoon on the terrace. Title track "Hot & Bothered" sets the tone with a summery vibe underpinned by some bumping drums, whilst "I'm wishin'" glides with a subtle house bump and some wonderful vocal touches. "Fling Cleaning" sees Peeman veer off into disco chug territory, whilst "Visions of You" ends the 12" on a soulful note.

Review: Steve Kahn & Co. are yet another of those curios of the early 80s that Best Italy have dug out, dusted down, spruced up and repressed for your eclectic party pleasure. "Got To Have Your Loving" is a pure feel good jam at every turn - it's got a very natural, live band sound mixed by the legendary Tee Scott that especially makes the aqueous bass playing shine through. Whether you plump for the vocal or the instrumental, this is the kind of record that could set a wedding party on fire as much as a serious heads-down disco funk session. You'll no doubt get a lot of mileage out of this one, and have a great time in the process.
