  2. Stand On The Word (Patchworks remix) (5:56)
  3. Stand On The Word (Panoptikum Arkestra remix) (6:54)
  4. Stand On The Word (Walter Mecca remix) (4:08)
Review: Having already reissued the Joubert Singers disco classic "Stand On the Word" in its original form earlier this year, French label Favourite get busy with a remix-heavy accoutrement in twelve inch format. Those new to the art of collecting classic discotheque vinyl will no doubt be tempted by the appearance of the much vaunted Larry Levan mix, which turns out wasn't actually by the legendary DJ but instead the equally brilliant and much missed Walter Gibbons. Regardless, the remix is a classic in the disco canon, and is complemented by three all new renditions. Long term label associate Patchwork comes through with a nicely judged remix that realigns the groove to a slinky Philly disco swagger, while on the flip Austrian duo Panoptikum Arkestra go for a stripped back dubby beatdown angle. Local Parisian production talent Walter Mecca calls on the spirit of p-funk and Dilla for a nicely blunted hip-hop take to round out this 12" nicely.

  2. Roger Damawuzan - "Loxo Nye" (Pushin Wood remix) (5:39)
  3. Napo De Mi Amor - "Cacatchoule "Berceuse Bassari"" (3:04)
  4. Sewavi Jacintho - "Miade Dua" (5:35)
Review: Hot Casa's latest must-have release is a veritable smorgasbord of Togolese treats. It focuses specifically on obscure soul music made in Togo in the 1970s, with two hard-to-find original cuts being joined by two contemporary re-edits of similarly obscure classics. The EP opens with Bosq's smooth, dancefloor-focused tweal of Yta Jourias's breezy, horn-heavy tropical soul workout "Adome Nyueto", before Pushin Wood takes over and adds a little contemporary electronic bounce - and some particularly colourful synths - to Roger Damawuzan's "Loxo Nye". Over on side B, Napo De Mi Amor's "Cacatchoule Berceuse Bassari" is a fuzzy soul shuffler rich in bright, Juju style guitar solos, hazy vocals and Hammond organ stabs, while Sewavi Jacintho's "Miade Dua" is a sweatier and heavier concoction powered by loose-limbed drumming and sun-kissed instrumentation.

Review: Barefoot Beats is a series of EPs released on Mareh Music, a record label based in Sao Paulo whose people are also the curators of the Mareh music festival in Boipeba - a remote island in Bahia. For their label's ninth edition, Rio de Janeiro's Joutro Mundo (Midnight Riot/Outra) delivers an edit of a lovely neon-lit boogie down number on "Revele", while on the flip the man from New York City Jkriv (Razor-N-Tape) gets a deep, soulful and life-affirming number into the mix with "Povo De Zambi".

Let's Ride (12'')
Cat: PPU 072. Rel: 17 Jul 15
  1. Let's Ride (4:07)
  2. You Must Go On (4:00)
Review: It's well known that People's Potential Unlimited boss Andrew Morgan has some serious crate digging skills. Even so, he continues to amaze with the obscurity and quality of the releases he chooses to reissue. Serious collectors have long sought out "Let's Ride" by guitarist Willie Lee Jnr under his occasional Junei alias. Originally released on 7" back in 1987, it's a killer chunk of synthesizer-heavy electrofunk blessed with some serious eyes-closed guitar solo action. Flipside "You Must Go On" - originally the A-side of the '87 release - is fantastic, too, offering a near perfect blend of sun-kissed Balearic attitude and smooth '80s soul grooves.

  1. Firewalker (JKriv remix) (6:17)
  2. Culebro (Black Science Orchestra remix) (6:31)
  3. Village Hustle (Bosq remix) (5:05)
  4. Culebro (Black Science Orchestra dub) (8:24)
Review: You can say that JKriv and Aaron Dae are big fans of L.A-based Afro-Latin funk fusionists Jungle Fire, as the latest release on Razor 'N' Tape Reserve features a quartet of fresh mixes of tracks from the band's bulging back catalogue. The headline attraction is undoubtedly a pair of reworks by Ashley Beedle and Rob Mello, the original founding members of Black Science Orchestra project, which recently reassembled following 15 years apart. This doubles up as a grand affair as the duo presents their first remix and release since their reunion. They first serve up a wonderfully percussive, analogue bass-propelled deep Afro-house "remix" of 2014 cut "Culebro", before reaching for the delays and delivering an arguably even better dancefloor "Dub". You'll also find JKriv's re-imagination of 2013 single "Firewalker" as a bumpin' chunk of horn-heavy dub disco, while Bosq gives "Village Hustle" a rolling Latin disco makeover.

Review: Brooklyn's Razor-N-Tape reach out to the Lowlands and coax Hans Peeman into donning his Junktion alias for a new four-track 12" on their Razor-N-Tape Reserve label. Living up to it's dignified and reserved billing, this fifth release on the offshoot finds the Nijmegen-based Peeman laying down some luscious, colourful disco vibes that will brighten up any sun laden afternoon on the terrace. Title track "Hot & Bothered" sets the tone with a summery vibe underpinned by some bumping drums, whilst "I'm wishin'" glides with a subtle house bump and some wonderful vocal touches. "Fling Cleaning" sees Peeman veer off into disco chug territory, whilst "Visions of You" ends the 12" on a soulful note.

Cat: BSTX 033. Rel: 04 Jun 18
  1. Got To Have Your Lovin (vocal) (6:09)
  2. Got To Have Your Lovin (instrumental) (4:57)
Review: Steve Kahn & Co. are yet another of those curios of the early 80s that Best Italy have dug out, dusted down, spruced up and repressed for your eclectic party pleasure. "Got To Have Your Loving" is a pure feel good jam at every turn - it's got a very natural, live band sound mixed by the legendary Tee Scott that especially makes the aqueous bass playing shine through. Whether you plump for the vocal or the instrumental, this is the kind of record that could set a wedding party on fire as much as a serious heads-down disco funk session. You'll no doubt get a lot of mileage out of this one, and have a great time in the process.

Dreamzone Remixes (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. No End (Tom Noble Never-Ending Story remix)
  2. Memories (Heatstick Continental Drift remix)
  3. When You Walk Through Them All (Peaking Lights remix)
  4. No End (Vezurro remix)
Review: From the Leath-meister: The limited Especial Specials continues with 4 remixes of Jaakko Eino Kalevi's Dreamzone EP. Featuring a heavy weight line up of Tom Noble, Heatsick, Peaking Lights and Vezurro, this is an all-bases-covered masterclass is taking Jaakko's pop leanings and giving them some boogie, dub and Italo sparkle. Hot on the heels of the Steaua de Mare Remixes comes 4 retakes of Jaakko Eino Kalevi's idiosyncratic pop stylings. Licensed from Weird World Records, this sees the multi-instrumentalist's original Dreamzone EP handed over for readjustment. The up, up boogie vibes of Tom Noble's calling card create his best remix to take. No Fun maybe Jaakko's 'ladies' love hymn, but with Tom's distinctive "never ending" bass and hats loops moving hips, a keys solo and vocal interplay ensure sublime perfection. Next Steven Warwick's superb Heatsick project implants his twisted casio-rawness in to Jaakko's world, marrying Memories ghostly vocals into a mix of afro-clipped beats and lo-fi melody that just fits. So happy to finally welcome in friends, family and inspiration, Peaking Lights in to the family. Aaron and Indra's uplifting dub love comes alive in this remix, with live bass grooves, vibing keys and Jaakko's unique vocal riding-a-riddim' all night long. To close up and coming Vezurro return to No Fun, providing an Italo love ode that can only move hearts into a true Rimini '84 summer affair. "Can't you see that I'm dancing?"

  3. The Mirage (Soft Rocks remix)
Review: From World Unknown, Magic Feet and Tusk Wax and now on to Kinfolk, Tim Rivers is marking out a place in that world of mystical grooves where acid, kosmische, new age, Balearic and wyrd pagan dance can all jam to the same beat. The title track on The Mirage is a gorgeous slice of motorik smoothness, letting sustained guitar nights ring out over a tender throb of bass. "Suni Aki" is a more dramatic piece with a healthy dose of 80s bombast poured over its loins, and then Soft Rocks grapples the B side for a remix of "The Mirage" that cuts the tow line and drifts off in the direction of the sunset.

Star Child (12")
Cat: KALITA 12007. Rel: 16 Nov 18
  1. Star Child (short version) (5:02)
  2. Star Child (long version) (8:34)
Review: Kalita Records are proud and honoured to announce the first ever and official reissue of Kallaloo's sought-after 1982 disco single 'Star Child', accompanied by interview-based liner notes. Originally released on Jeffrey Turpin's Trinidadian record label IDA, 'Star Child' has since become highly sought-after by both DJs and collectors alike as an invisible, yet astonishing piece of Caribbean disco. Unable at the time to gain the traction and success that it deserved, we hope that this re-release provides an opportunity to bring such a great record to a much wider audience.

Kallaloo consisted of various Trinidadian musicians including Keith Alexander and Peter Wayne Barkley. Keith had been well-respected as a member of the Trinidadian group Impact, and was later to become an in-demand producer and composer under the name of Keith Diamond, responsible for various hits by Billy Ocean, Donna Summer, Starpoint and Melba Moore. In contrast, Peter was a well-known recording session drummer, but after 'Star Child's' release he moved to North Carolina to pursue other interests and "was never heard from again".

'Star Child' was recorded at Right Track Recording, in mid-town Manhattan, New York. As Jeffrey recalls, the atmosphere in the studio was "great", with "everyone upbeat, the cream of the crop just looking for that break... everyone was talented and just wanted the chance to express their own ideas". Five hundred copies of the record were released on IDA with a white label design, and they were sold both in Brooklyn, New York and Port of Spain, Trinidad. It was also released on a red label, however this was not to Jeffrey's knowledge at the time.

Jeffrey explains that the reason why the record didn't fare well at the time was because of the difficulty in getting the song played on the radio. As he recalls, radio stations were much more likely to play 'radio versions' of songs which lasted for a couple of minutes, rather than five or seven minute 'extended' versions such as 'Star Child', which were more suitable to a club environment. In addition, as Jeffrey explains, radio airplay is a "political business", and also within a short while band members such as Keith got their own breaks, and the Kallaloo era was over as quickly as it had started.

Review: Random Mind State coming on strong with another concentrated dose of pure party. Kandinski gives Madonna a 1up, charging up the classic "Vogue" 909s with raw energy, George Feely follows up the corking "Apache 909" with a supreme disco uplift on "Forget About U" while Turk Turkelton flicks up the filters for a loopy slice of shoe shuffled jacks. Elsewhere Hauke drives us deeper into a hypnotic state of mine with the twinkling, filtered "Instinct Groove" before Ayer Fijen chimes us the perfect lullaby with "Sweet Dreams". Great EPs are made of these.

Review: Many hardened disco diggers have long dreamed of finding a copy of Karriem's super-sweet 1979 single, "I Love You". It has a reputation for being one of the harder disco records to find, with copies of the original Pashlo Records release changing hands for serious sums online. Happily, Favorite Recordings has gone to the trouble of licensing it, offering this re-issue in replica artwork (complete with lyrics on the back sleeve). "I Love You" itself is near perfect, with Karriem's fine vocals and killer electric piano solos riding a loose disco groove full of clipped guitars and rich percussion. Like the original 12", this version boasts the superior extended mix, and a tighter edited version.

Review: Excellent and much needed 12" pressing of Low Altitude from Australian boogie don Mike Kay! Originally surfacing on a limited 7" release through Melbourne imprint This Thing, it's given a wider release thanks to the dons at People's Potential Unlimited with the addition of a further cut from Kay. A Side track "Low Altitude" is a lot more DJ friendly now (ever tried beatmatching 45s?) and has been extended with more handclaps and disco noises from the funkateer Kay himself! If you're a rabid consumer of Tom Noble and Inskwel stuff or digged the Moon B issue on PPU earlier this year then you'll love this 808 boogie bumper. Face down, "Rumble Strip" eases up the tempo a nudge for some slick and sweet analogue disco and the wonderfully smudgy bonus cut "Kyoto Haze" really shows off Kay's melodic chops.

Review: One of two sun-kissed KC excursions from the mighty Todd Terje for RSD, here we find him dissecting the horn-blasting feel-good 1976 strutter "I'm Your Boogie Man". Stripping the feels right back to the tight guitar and bass spine then redressing it slowly with each silky element, he's switched the concentrated party into a dramatic precession where every aspect gets its own place on the red carpeted groove.

On this rare 1980 solo 45" he teamed up with a young Bobby Youngblood to create an emphatic soul disco powerhouse that clear set the foundations for the wealth of big vocal proto house tracks that followed in its wake. Review: Montreal's KenLo Craqnuques has been bubbling away in the underground for some time, but lucky for us Hot Shot Sounds took notice and now present his first outing on vinyl with the Wheeels EP. There is an irresistible funk to the sounds that Craqnuques conjures up, pushing fat, Moog-esque basslines and low slung machine beats rolling at an easy tempo that hark back to the golden days of boogie and electro funk. "Mollusque" indicates how his is far from a throwback sound though - this is up to the minute instrumental RnB that recognises the true roots of the genre while looking to the future, and it sounds utterly fresh.

Review: Given the "Waltered States" title and Al Kent's well-known love of Walter Gibbons, it doesn't take a genius to work out that the re-edits showcased here are of tracks originally remixed by the legendary NYC disco-mixer. Kent handles 12" one, unfurling the groovy, low-slung, bass-driven disco bliss of "Just as Long" before whipping his shirt off and dancing all night to the swirling strings, rubbery bass and driving percussion of "L&O". Over on record two, sometime Misterio duo Devin Dare delivers an occasionally loopy, ten-minute rearrangement of sweet disco shuffler "Play With Me", before delving into the world of Philadelphia soul on the anthem-like "True Ex".

  4. Abdul (Juju & Jordash remix) (6:29)
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Emotional Especial return with a release from Romanian duo Khidja that comes packing some excellent remixes from senor Fairplay and Juju & Jordash! Brought to the attention of EE thanks to Hardway Brother Sean Johnston, who returned from a Bucharest DJ gig singing the praises of two young DJs, Khidja's productions are as impressive as their selections on the evidence here. "Mustafa" is more immediate with shuffle percussion, swirling sirens and acid bubbles leading to a perfect horn break. In the hands of Mr Fairplay, the track takes on anthemic qualities; the stabbing bass and build have allegedly seen howls of appreciation when it's dropped at A Love From Outer Space. "Abdul" finds Khidja in a more calming mood reminiscent of Art of Noise, though the kick and bass ensure there is plenty of rhythmic emphasis, whilst the Juju & Jordash remix edges towards a Balearic digidub vibe.

Review: Stuart Leath flexes his contacts book with an all-star cast of producers and respected scalpel artists called on to rework cuts from the recent Never Seen The Dunes EP by Khidja. Any 12" featuring the collective talents of Discodromo, In Flagranti, Red Axes and Selvy on mixing desk duties should get you excited and this crew bring the disco heat. "Never Seen The Dunes" is given the Discodromo treatment, adding pulsating bass, driving arpeggio, all while allowing the bump of the original to keeping pushing things on. This is followed by In Flagranti's inspired 'Autobahn' retake of the deeper vibes of "Aura" which is apparently a huge favourite of the label. A matured cruiser that keeps the swing, it all leads to those strings and Eastern flavours gliding over for the perfect finale. Things head darker on the reverse, with Tel Aviv's shinning stars Red Axes, manning the controls for the scatter bounce of "Indecis" for the stand out remix. Twisted vocals, brooding FX and reversed guitar all atop a mesmeric kick, things just keeps going higher and higher. Finally "The Quiet Before The Red Stop" is tweaked by Selvy of The Very Polish Cut Outs and Transatlantyk fame, adding some club bump to Khidja's Balearic original.

Review: Jennifer Cardini's Correspondant has firmly established itself as an 'it' label within the current indie dance scene with its eclectic grooves that span punk funk, industrial/EBM throwbacks and even a bit of melodic tech house for good measure. For its fifth compilation, the Cologne based label serves up some current scene favourites in the form of Romanian duo Khidja and their groovy and tripped out slow burner "Gelatine" and Jakarta's finest Jonathan Kusuma: who is in top form as always on the lo-slung baleraic number "Motor Melodies". On the flip, German duo Marvin & Guy take you on a cosmic styled trip on "Juba Dance" while Kempes: the new brainchild of Danny Passarella and Tom Wegg-Prosser channel their best impressions of greats such as Giorgio Moroder or Bobby Orlando on "Sentimental Idiot".

Fajrann (40 gram vinyl 7")
Cat: ERC 067. Rel: 29 Oct 18
  1. Fajrann
  2. Ne Doute Pas (instrumental)
Review: Elaine Kibaro is a French singer who grew up in Tunisia before enjoying a reasonably productive career in the late 70s and through the 80s. Emotional Rescue caught on to her fine contributions to the disco world via the Pour L'Amour collection, and now they offer up a pair of alternative cuts that add to the overall legacy of her career peak. "Fajrann" is a re-vocalled version of Kibaro's biggest hit "Aurore" sung in Arabic, speaking to her Tunisian roots, while "Ne Doute Pas" appears in its instrumental form for those who want the punchy Linn Drum beats and dazzling synth lines in all their glory.

  3. Do You Wanna Dance? (Felix Dickinson Discomix)
Review: Emotional Rescue's Miami groove revival continues with the latest instalment in their celebration of Konduko Records and the work of Noel 'King Sporty' Williams. Following the stellar "Rock Attack" and "Haven't Been Funked Enough" comes one of the strongest outings from The Ex Tras, "Do You Wanna Dance?" It's everything an early 80s Florida jam should be, all tough electro basslines, limber funk instrumentation and dubby touches in all the right places, not least on the instrumental version. Felix Dickinson comes on board for a "Discomix" that stretches the original out in all the right places for an extended pleasure ride through some of the best dance music to come out of the Sunshine State.

  3. Haven't Been Funked Enough (Nad Discomix) (10:10)
Review: Emotional Rescue do the right thing and tap up the Konduko label - an oft overlooked gem of the Miami bass scene - for one of the biggest tracks in Noel 'King Sporty' Williams' back catalogue. "Haven't Been Funked Enough" is an absolute battering ram of proto electro, staggeringly advanced for its time (it was originally released in 1982). There's also a "Rapstrumental" mix with some life-affirming instructive speech across the jam, but the real icing on the cake is Idjut Boy Nad's wild and ranging "Discomix" on the B side. It's a truly spaced out affair that sounds like it was mixed live on the desk with its rugged FX sends and woozy atmosphere.

  1. What I Did In The Street (3:00)
  2. What I Did In The Street (disco version) (3:40)
Review: A 45 suiting the funky northern soul sound, re-reissued here on a great sounding Record Shack release. Both highly sought after versions of "What I Did In The Street" featured here: from the raw and original Gulfstream label version, backed with the smoother, disco release that came later. Originally released in 1978 as a B side to Betty Padgett's "Tonight Is The Night", King was a Florida based vocalist and this terrific song was her sole release.
