Review: Say yes! The definitive gossamer Italo floor fuel of Ida No and Johnny Jewel's Glass Candy outfit enjoys an expanded reissue here on sexy lavender vinyl after over a decade out of print. Nothing but synthetic positivity as both the title track and "Drumm" stride with an almost marching feel before "Where Time Sits Still" plunges much deeper into moody new romantic cinematics. Elsewhere other highlights include the slinky poignancy that lingers from every spacious bass pluck on "City Lights" and the trembling ambience and pressurised atmosphere of the finale "Sanctuary". Yes please.

  1. End Of Times (Golden dub) (8:16)
  2. End Of Times (Silver dub) (7:12)
  3. End Of Times (Drone-apella) (4:36)
Review: London based duo The Golden Filter are comprised of Australian Penelope Trappes and American Stephen Hindman - who met in New York City originally. Known staples of Optimo Music for some time, their End Of Times EP was released in late 2017 and saw the duo in top form. The track is a throbbing and hypnotic new beat jam that gives a respectful nod to the master Giorgio Moroder with its fine use of arpeggio and repetitive vintage beats beneath Trappes' seductive come hither vocal: it's pure magic! There are three versions on this 12", with the aforementioned Golden Dub, the more uptempo and straight ahead Silver Dub and the course the rather convenient Drone-apella for good measure: which includes those ethereal analogue pads and eerie trails of reverb. 2017 was a standout year for the duo who also released their well received sixth studio album Still // Alone.

  1. The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us (6:53)
Review: A legendary record among collectors and funk and soul fans, constantly subject to shoddy bootlegs and pricetags of well over $700, "The Guardian Angel" is a pretty historical record; not only produced by Patrick Adams, not only blessed with a really meaty, funk-primed break but also a story of New York's vigilante crack team who protected innocent folk on the subway during Manhattan's fabled rougher times. Listen closely and you can literally hear the sounds of the Z train.

This is also the debut release of there very own Dreamtime Records, Dream Analysis Music. A limited run of 200. Enjoy, Canal Life!

Track Five (12")
Cat: DFA 2244. Rel: 11 Oct 10
  1. Track Five
  2. Track Five (Ame remix)
Review: Ever since its oh-so-brief three minute appearance in the 2005 DFA Holiday Mix, the previously unreleased "Track 5" has been taunting Delia Gonzales and Gavin Russom completists. Hooray to DFA for finally unveiling the track in all it's ten minutes of soporific glory. With Russom knee deep in remixes and his increasingly psychedelic Crystal Ark project, it's been purported this is potentially the last time we'll see the contemporary wizard on vinyl with Gonzales. If that's the case it's fitting that the duo appears to be sauntering towards the light on the cover. The addition of a truly breath taking dancefloor reimagination from German duo Ame means this is a fine final chapter to an all too brief but excellent partnership.

  2. Let It Carry You (Dino Soccio remix) (6:28)
Review: Jose's tones have been charmed by remixes in the past; notably by Jori Hulkkonen on "Crosses" and Todd Terje on "Killing For Love". Almost 10 years later and Holy Ghost! and Dino Soccio remind us how it's done on "Let It Carry You" from Jose's 2014 album Vestiges & Claws. Holy Ghost! gives Gonzales such a sparkling polish and spaces out his lyrics he sounds like Hot Chip while Dino adds a more cosmic, chuggy dubby Norwegian sound. Like previous twists on Jose, both are sublime.

  4. The Juno Experience (5:46)
Review: Sleazy McQueen's Lovedancing is back with Colombia's Felipe Gordon who has appeared previously on top labels such as Quintessentials, Toy Tonics and S3A. Seriously lo-slung disco deviance awaits you on The Glory EP: from the looped-up and dusted down title track and the smooth, Rhodes-led deepness of "Nebiancater". On the flip, get into the groove in slo-mo style on the irresistible "Mara" until he saves the best for last on "The Juno Experience" - mind you, we could be biased. No, seriously: this neon-lit, boogie-down jam for the late night sounds like a familiar classic (as we're sure you'll agree) and is bound to get bums wiggling on the dancefloor guaranteed.

  3. I Want You Slide (7:35)
  4. Talk About (7:10)
Review: Even if Russian producer Gradient Logic is found here turning out the business on Serbian label Disco Fruit, the sound on the Far Away EP comes on like a snappy fusion of Garage-ready New York proto house and laid back West Coast boogie of the highest order. It's the third vinyl release for Tonbe's label, and once more marks the serious clout behind the Eastern European operation and its closest artists. Just try grooving to the slick bass pops on "Feel Me" without being transported to an early 80s dancefloor. There's a more organic funk to lock into on "I Want You Slide", but as ever it's hard to tell where the sampling ends and the musicianship begins on this utterly natural sounding EP.

  2. Come Together (4:38)
Review: The Icy City imprint comes roaring through with their second EP to date, an absolutely killer amalgamation of boogie sounds from the warmth and depth of analogue instruments. Reggie Grantham and The New Generation take it back to 1985, bubbling up the airwaves with nothing but raw percussion and steaming basslines, reminding us of the best electro output from the golden era. "Come Together" should surely be seen as a future classic and, of course, as the sort of killer that you keep in the DJ bag at all times! Sensational stuff.

  3. Atlantis (Jacques Renault edit) (8:14)
  4. Corre Caminos (Marcel Vogel Happy edit) (6:21)
Review: Sonar Kollektiv has done an excellent job in re-introducing the world to the cosmic disco, jazz-funk and dusty grooves of Venezuelan producer Daniel Grau. As well as last year's timely career retrospective, The Magic Sound of Daniel Grau, they've also been releasing a steady stream of contemporary reinterpretations. There's plenty of killer material on this edit-heavy fourth 12" of reworks, with Mark E's chugging, loopy version of "Combination" arguably standing out. Jacques Renault and Marcel Vogel deliver deliciously celebratory scalpel versions of "Atlantis" and "Corre Caminos", while the little-known Fajra Fantasmo turns "Con El Cielo En Tus Ojos" into a stripped-back, organic house delight.

Review: Since launching at the tail end of 2015, Tokyo's Edit & Dub Recordings has released a string of rare and previously unheard remixes/re-edits from disco titans. There's further evidence of it here on their seventh edition of respectful edits. Grey & Hanks "Dancin Disco Dub" (unreleased Disco dub) is classic, NYC circa '70s style disco of the timeless variety. Late night mood lighting comes courtesy of of Bernard Wright's deep disco moment "Master Rocker" (unreleased Disco dub) which features a familiar and often sampled hook. On the flip, neon-lit disco funk galore courtesy of legendary American singer Melba Moore on the ultra uplifting "Let's Dub Together" (unreleased Disco dub) and to top things off on this fabulous release: we have the master himself - the one and only Giorgio Moroder with a yes you guessed it 'unreleased Disco dub' of the classic "Valley Of The Dolls".

Review: A bona fide Afro funk legend, Tony Grey cut his teeth in Nigeria as a James Brown impersonator before establishing pacts with his backing band The Black 7 who later morphed into the Ozimba Messengers. Their album The Message was released in 1981 and gave us both of these outrageously funky jams. "Time Factor" is undiluted disco complete with cool pops and whistles that Dave Lee has been championing for 30 years. "You Are The One" shows more of its Nigerian heartbeat amidst the tight horns and Tony's emphatic vocal delivery. Complete with a poster, this is a really special reissue.

Review: In the spirit of cultural pride, Rune Lindbaek provides the audio tour guide into the unexplored back streets of Norwegian disco tracks on Gronmo Edits - perhaps with the exception of "Rasputin" which is more a tribute to the German style (the name's a dead giveaway!). "Lonely Woman/I Dekning" is an edit of a track by a certain cult Norse rock band and is chill balearica just the way we like it. A certain Danish disco favourite gets a respectful edit on "Disco Tango". Rune Lindbaek from the now legendary 'Those Norwegians' recording outfit has been releasing music since 1992. He has produced with the disco heroes Idjut Boys and Lindstrom, and remixed artists like The Knife, Jose Gonzalez and Bryan Ferry. He has released music on seminal labels like Smalltown Supersound, Beatservice and Parlophone.

  1. Games (Prins Thomas Diskomiks) (8:20)
  2. Garden (Dan Lissvik remix) (5:36)
Review: To celebrate this year's Record Store Day jamboree, Scandolearic pop sort Kai Gundelach decided to get a couple of his tracks remixed. The results are rather impressive. On the A-side, fellow Norwegian Prins Thomas gives his interpretation of recent Baltus album track "Games", effortlessly joining the dots between breezy, sun-kissed pop, glassy-eyed Balearic and rubbery dub disco. On the reverse, Studio band member Dan Lissvik provides his spin on 2017 single "Garden". His take veers closer to shimmering, synthesizer-fuelled dream pop, with Gundleach's heart-aching vocals and jazzy guitar solos rising above a suitably warm, baggy and loved-up backing track.

Review: Two out-and-out rarities from Hancock's Columbia-era output. Strictly the sole preserve of DJ promo back in 79/80, the clue is in the title 'special' disco remixes. Smooth, soulful and arranged with such style, every element of Herbie's essential ingredients is brought to the fore in its own time with its own space. "Stars In Your Eyes" swoons with a soulful ballad feel while "Saturday Night" pumps and jumps with party-pulling allure. Simply essential.

  1. Heaven
  2. Girl
  3. You
Review: Manchester producer Andy Hanley has had one previous outing on Ruf Kutz but now he's adopted the Haners alias to kick off the Misadventures label with an assured grip of warm, discoid funk shot through with a healthy dose of 80s production finish. "Heaven" is definitely the most dancefloor ready track - a shimmering slice of laid back disco house with plenty of hooks and a dreamy, slightly dubbed out atmosphere. "Girl" is more audacious, slowing the tempo right down and riding on a brittle beat and a heavily reverbed dose of island boogie. "You" keeps things slow and easy for the gentle part of the night - a consummate smooth groover.

  1. Try Your Love (4:11)
  2. Close To You (4:03)
Review: Following the success of 1980 disco classic "I Like What You're Doing To Me", Young & Company ended up in a long contract dispute with their label, Brunswick. Co-producer Buddy Hankerson used the time to record a set of tracks with a new collection of musicians, the Shine Band. Sadly, none of these recordings were released at the time, making this Time Capsule 7" from the Super Disco Edits camp something of a red-hot exclusive. Rescued from reel-to-reel tapes found in Hankerson's brother's loft, both "Try Your Love" and "Close To You" are superb. While the latter - a leisurely chunk of boogie-soul that sits somewhere between two other Hankerson produced acts, Aurra and Slave - is impressive, it's the livelier, jauntier A-side (very Young & Company) that makes this 7" so desirable.

Review: Attention Vegetarian vinyl consumers - approach this excellent introduction to the I'm A Cliche canon proper from Hannulelauri with caution if the sight of bare meat causes your constitution consternation. Raw steak on the cover art aside, there's little other reason not to indulge in this brilliantly oddball take on house music from the Finnish duo. Opening track "Box To Box" splays a cheeky acid stab lead over rusted percussion steeped in off kilter rhythms, whilst deep in the machine what sounds like an elephant tries to play along in time - it's a wonderfully tongue in cheek riposte to po faced music everywhere. The accompanying remix from Throne Of Blood duo Populette does a sterling job of realigning the track to burning deep house bump that's a perfect fit for the midnight hour. On the flip the title track "Dysfunction" straddles a lysergic house pump that will prove potent in the right atmosphere, whilst Toby Tobias embellishes the track with some soulful excess via diva warbling and hand claps.

Review: The Skylax affiliated Warehouse Classics series has always taken an authentically old-fashioned approach to the humble re-edit, serving up chopped and looped versions inspired by the loose, drum-machine heavy reworks of original Chicago house masters such as Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles. This fourth volume, the first from label boss Hardrock Striker, continues in this vein. Amongst the four tracks you'll find a slamming early house gem (the clean kick drums, metallic hits and chiming melodies of "Mano a Mano"), a brilliantly teasted and tweaked Ready for the World revision ("Shyla", where the French producer builds the drums before dropping into the vocals), and what sounds like a Paul Weller/Jam/Style Council rework (the undulating Balearic funk of "Precious Thang").

Review: In some ways, it's amazing that the illicit RDY label is still finding unreleased, overlooked, or little-known Ron Hardy edits and productions to fill their vinyl-only series. This is their 25th release in six years, and they show no signs of calling it quits. All three tracks here are on a stretched-out, dubbed-out electronic disco tip, beginning with what appears to be Hardy's reel-to-reel extension of Disco Dream & The Androids' quirky 1979, Moroder-ish arpeggio-jam "Dream Machine". Flip for an all-instrumental dub take on Craig Peyton's decidedly wonky, electro-disco cover of "Be Thankful For What You've Got" and "116 BPM Trax", an un-credited, boogie-era, proto-house jam full of bubbling electronics, cheeky synthesizer riffs and clanking drum machine hits.

Review: The Ron Hardy edits just keep on coming. For the 43rd edition we find ourselves peeping through a very focused time window as all three tracks come from one of the smoothest transition periods funk has made; the rare groove, soul and boogie from the class of 81-83. Cappuccino's "Hell Dance With Me" slinks and shakes with an ESG style looseness and hypnosis, Man Friday & Jive Junior's "Picking Up Sounds" is a beautiful slightly sleazy synth funk jam while Kleeer keep things clam-tight with their plucked guitar, strolling bassline and dreamboat synth chords. Bliss, as always.

This is the second outing for Hatchets on the label, and "Hey Benji" makes for a perfect encapsulation of the Gop Tun sound with its warm, organic sound palette, slinky disco structure and traditional Latin elements. Prins Thomas meanwhile pushes the track into a whole other realm for his remix, creating a hard-edged, heavy-grooving remix that promises all kinds of psychedelic abandon on the dancefloor.

  2. Marie Terese (4:57)
  3. Gamodi (4:54)
Review: With this tasty collection of sticky, tropical-minded reworks, edit kings KAT Records welcome a new name to the roster. Hatsvali is a new alias for the Georgian duo Rotkraft, who previously released throbbing house and nu-disco jams on Nurvous and Kompakt Extra. We're particularly enjoying A-side "Bebe", where jaunty horns, flash-fried guitars and Loleatta Holloway vocal samples rise above a chunky, tropical funk groove. Flip for the gently housed-up Cambodian disco-funk flex of "Marie Terese" and "Gamodi", a sweet, shuffling and gently dubbed-out interpretation of what sounds like a dewy-eyed old French disco record. Fine floor-filling fare, all told.

  4. Chember (7:48)
Review: Sometime Going Good and Jin Records producer Yoshinori Hayashi re-surfaces on Disco Halal, a label befitting his maverick, impossible-to-pigeonhole talents. Uncountable Set is predictably eccentric, with Hayashi laying down a quartet of muddy, otherworldly cuts that gleefully stick two fingers up at neat categorization. Check, for example, the rhythmic sample soup this is "Palanquin Bearing Monkey" - think spacey, jazz-funk synth doodles, handclap-based rhythms and all manner of woozy, cut and paste samples - the out-there afro-jazz of "Stepping on Dewdrops" and the frankly nightmarish closer "Chember", a fiendishly freaky weird-out that peppers a slipped jazz rhythm with cut-up choral samples and cement mixer percussion hits.
