  1. Box Of Box
  2. Box Of Box (Populette remix)
  3. Dysfunction
  4. Dysfunction (Toby Tobias Mainline mix)
Review: Attention Vegetarian vinyl consumers - approach this excellent introduction to the I'm A Cliche canon proper from Hannulelauri with caution if the sight of bare meat causes your constitution consternation. Raw steak on the cover art aside, there's little other reason not to indulge in this brilliantly oddball take on house music from the Finnish duo. Opening track "Box To Box" splays a cheeky acid stab lead over rusted percussion steeped in off kilter rhythms, whilst deep in the machine what sounds like an elephant tries to play along in time - it's a wonderfully tongue in cheek riposte to po faced music everywhere. The accompanying remix from Throne Of Blood duo Populette does a sterling job of realigning the track to burning deep house bump that's a perfect fit for the midnight hour. On the flip the title track "Dysfunction" straddles a lysergic house pump that will prove potent in the right atmosphere, whilst Toby Tobias embellishes the track with some soulful excess via diva warbling and hand claps.

  3. Shyla (8:57)
  4. Precious Thang! (8:57)
Review: The Skylax affiliated Warehouse Classics series has always taken an authentically old-fashioned approach to the humble re-edit, serving up chopped and looped versions inspired by the loose, drum-machine heavy reworks of original Chicago house masters such as Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles. This fourth volume, the first from label boss Hardrock Striker, continues in this vein. Amongst the four tracks you'll find a slamming early house gem (the clean kick drums, metallic hits and chiming melodies of "Mano a Mano"), a brilliantly teasted and tweaked Ready for the World revision ("Shyla", where the French producer builds the drums before dropping into the vocals), and what sounds like a Paul Weller/Jam/Style Council rework (the undulating Balearic funk of "Precious Thang").

  2. Craig Peyton - "Be Thankful" (7:15)
  3. 116 BPM Trax (4:32)
Review: In some ways, it's amazing that the illicit RDY label is still finding unreleased, overlooked, or little-known Ron Hardy edits and productions to fill their vinyl-only series. This is their 25th release in six years, and they show no signs of calling it quits. All three tracks here are on a stretched-out, dubbed-out electronic disco tip, beginning with what appears to be Hardy's reel-to-reel extension of Disco Dream & The Androids' quirky 1979, Moroder-ish arpeggio-jam "Dream Machine". Flip for an all-instrumental dub take on Craig Peyton's decidedly wonky, electro-disco cover of "Be Thankful For What You've Got" and "116 BPM Trax", an un-credited, boogie-era, proto-house jam full of bubbling electronics, cheeky synthesizer riffs and clanking drum machine hits.

Review: Ron Hardy's edit vaults just keep on supplying and you keep on buying. The RDY series now stands at number 31 and its still nothing but vintage tweaking. The musicality and instrumental frenzy of Willie Bobo's "Always There" enjoys a full celebration, Al Di Meola's Italo trip "Sequencer" undergoes a muscular cosmic touch while "Bpm Trax" pushes us close to the edge. Just try not to lose your heads.

Review: Are you ready? Of course you are... The RDY collection strides into its 40s with three crucial timecapsules that were championed by the one and only Ron. German space boogiers Bamboo take the lead with a Cerrone-style style cosmic romp while Brian Biggs' "AEO 1 & 2" (as featured on David Mancuso's legendary Loft compilation) takes us deep into tropical bliss 1980-style. Finally Italofunk troupe Easy Going throw down a classic piece of late 70s boogie loaded with sweaty fills and freaky solos. Hardy knew.

  3. Kleeer - "Taste The Music" (7:21)
Review: The Ron Hardy edits just keep on coming. For the 43rd edition we find ourselves peeping through a very focused time window as all three tracks come from one of the smoothest transition periods funk has made; the rare groove, soul and boogie from the class of 81-83. Cappuccino's "Hell Dance With Me" slinks and shakes with an ESG style looseness and hypnosis, Man Friday & Jive Junior's "Picking Up Sounds" is a beautiful slightly sleazy synth funk jam while Kleeer keep things clam-tight with their plucked guitar, strolling bassline and dreamboat synth chords. Bliss, as always.

Review: Now in their eighth year of edit dispatches and Ron's legacy continues to bless us with tracks that were some of the most sought after edits in DJ history. Here we're treated to an array of sounds as Change's rolling disco jam "Sweet Lady" gets extra chug, Blue Vision's cinematic "Visions" is extended with our focus fully refixed on the cosmic slap bass. Finally his subtle twist on "Theme From The Warriors" where the full energy really bursts in after the intro and continues to rise throughout. Majestic.

Review: The Ron Hardy edits and specials just keep on flowing. Here the theme is kept vibrant and wholly focused on disco funk feels as we're treated to three extensions from the late 70s; Mass Production's debut from 76 "Welcome To Our World" is a warm and energetic cut that digs right into the heart of the dance, Tony Silvester's "Cosmic Lady" is taken up a gear with full attention on the instrumental sections while Willie Hutch's "Foxy Lady" retains full smoke and allure. Hardy knew how to pick them.

  1. Derrick Harriott - "Let It Whip" (4:25)
  2. Susdan Cadogan - "Juicy Fruit" (3:39)
Review: Two dubwise covers, re-issued since Ximeno's first press in 2012. Originally released in 1983, Derrick Harriott's cover of The Dazz Band's "Let It Whip" fuses the best of dub (he was one of the first artists to make sweet music with King Tubby at the mixing controls) and boogie, creating a unique hybrid that works almost too well. Meanwhile on the flip, Susan Cadogan covers the Mtume classic "Juicy Fruit" (also released in 1983), switching the original's R&B flavour for something more sunkissed and sultry. Both will work wonders when the summer comes.

Review: Gop Tun are a Brazilian label and party crew operating out of Sao Paulo, and they stride into their third release with a pair of tracks that are likely to establish them on the map even more than they are already. This is the second outing for Hatchets on the label, and "Hey Benji" makes for a perfect encapsulation of the Gop Tun sound with its warm, organic sound palette, slinky disco structure and traditional Latin elements. Prins Thomas meanwhile pushes the track into a whole other realm for his remix, creating a hard-edged, heavy-grooving remix that promises all kinds of psychedelic abandon on the dancefloor.

Review: With this tasty collection of sticky, tropical-minded reworks, edit kings KAT Records welcome a new name to the roster. Hatsvali is a new alias for the Georgian duo Rotkraft, who previously released throbbing house and nu-disco jams on Nurvous and Kompakt Extra. We're particularly enjoying A-side "Bebe", where jaunty horns, flash-fried guitars and Loleatta Holloway vocal samples rise above a chunky, tropical funk groove. Flip for the gently housed-up Cambodian disco-funk flex of "Marie Terese" and "Gamodi", a sweet, shuffling and gently dubbed-out interpretation of what sounds like a dewy-eyed old French disco record. Fine floor-filling fare, all told.

  4. Love Shine (5:08)
Review: Two years on from his first appearance on Brooklyn's finest re-edit imprint, Martin Hayes returns with a second salvo of DJ-friendly disco revisions. The Leipzig producer goes for the jugular from the start, delivering a slightly straightened-out, house-friendly tweak of a celebratory disco gem on boisterous opener "Easy Come Easy Go", before serving up a sizeable edit of a slo-mo orchestral disco groover ("Tiff"). He returns to peak-time pastures via EP highlight "Turn You On", a wickedly up-tempo anthem built around razor-sharp strings, jaunty piano riffs, bustling beats and a seriously good "walking" bassline. To round things off, Hayes delivers "Love Shine", a far warmer and groovier concoction blessed with breezy piano riffs, extended percussion breaks and incessant vocal snippets.

  1. Space & Time (unreleased re-edit)
  2. Prescription Every Night
Review: Running Back Records chief Gerd Janson has decided to revive a piece of dance history by reissuing Heaven & Earth's classic 1995 house offering. Back then, producers Luke Solomon, Rob Mello and Zaki D teamed to form a collective known as Heaven & Earth. Paying homage to their favourite label, Prescription Records who were putting out the deep, acid house that they loved from owners Chez Damier and Ron Trent, the trio collaborated on two original tracks - the now legendary "A Space and Time" and "Prescription Every Night".

The release blew up, turning the three London producers into household names overnight. - so much so that collective pronged off into their own solo careers. Such has been the demand for each, that a remix of "Beau Mot Plage" and Red Nail's "I Think of You" are the only times that they worked together again.

Fifteen years later, Gerd Janson secured the rights to re-issue the release and even loaded the EP with a couple of note worthy additions to entice record collectors to pick up a copy even if the original sits proudly in their record box. An unreleased edit of "Space and Time", where the piano takes on a more dubby feel, is joined by the disco tinged "Prescription Every Night", immortalized in Carl Craig's infamous 1995 Essential Mix.

This re-mastered and re-shaped EP is an original slice of the disco-house sound that has become so fashionable of late. As dance culture becomes more and more reflective, it is testament to the classic early tracks that inspired a generation that they are picked up again fifteen years later and re-issued for a new generation to treasure and cherish

  1. Keep God On Your Side (5:51)
  2. Going Down (Incognito) (6:36)
Review: Previously, Philadelphia outfit Heem The Music Monsters was most famous for the sought-after 1976 psych-funk 7" "Wake Up People". It turns out, though, that the Hubert Willis-produced band recorded tons of other material in the same period, almost all of which has never seen the light of day before. The two tracks featured here are two such examples. "Keep God On Your Side" is a pleasingly sweet and dreamy chunk of life-affirming warmth that sits somewhere between classic Philly Soul and the more conscious vibes of the Mighty Ryeders. B-side instrumental "Going Down (Incognito)" is arguably even better, mixing as it does the inspired fusion of Brit-funk combo Cymande with heavy Clavinet lines, breathy backing vocals and dueling horn solos.

Review: Still flexing a sexy synth tan from his excursion to Neon Beach this time last year, the mysterious Barry Helafonte returns to Arcane with five more stunning grooves. "Base Unit" sets the scene with its vibrant synths and staccato beats before dropping straight into west coast la panpipe Tropicana on "Marina Funk". Elsewhere "In The Mood" is so warm you could spark your cigar from it; oozing soul in the plucked bass and swooning synths, it leads to more upbeat fair in the form of the Detroit-tuned electro boogie "Sparkling Mango" and a woozy dreamy finale in the wavey, melting tones of "Out In The Night". Hella dope.

Review: A couple of years back, Rafael Top Secret - a selector known for digging deep for inspiration - delivered a tidy re-edit of "Sekele I Like It", a previously little-known Afro-boogie cut by French artist Robert "Bobby" Helms. Copies of the 1980 album it came from, Lay Down, Girl, now go for serious money, prompting this licensed reissue. Helms' brilliant, horn-totin' original is accompanied by another cut from that album, "Feet On The Ground" - a straight-up disco affair - and two new flipside remixes. Baptman and Betino's "Philly Vibe" mix of "Sekele I Like" is a largely instrumental interpretation that includes some killer electric piano solos, with Vas Moody's "Feet On The Ground" remix taking that track in a tightly-wound dub disco direction.

Review: Perpetually locked into a disco groove, Pete Herbert has already impressed this year with the splendour of his releases on Nang alongside Martin Denev, but on this new 12" for Riot Gear he's stepping out on his own. The record actually leads in with the plush, romantic throb of the Yam Who? remix of "Expresso" before the original takes over with a more peppy, borderline hi-nrg approach. On the B side Bottin gets to take "No Big Thing" to task with a version rich in electro funk synthlines, while the original sports some piano house chops and enough sizzling dancefloor energy to ignite a ruckus in a retirement home.

Review: This is big: a collaboration between Balearic nu-disco heavyweight Pete Herbert and "the voice of house" himself, Robert Owens. In its original form, "Pass Me By" is bubbly and attractive, with Owens' adding deep, soulful and emotion-rich vocals to a sparkling, synth-heavy backing track that effortlessly joins the dots between freestyle, proto-house and Italo-disco. The equally impressive remix package is headed up by a fine rework from Daniele Baldelli and DJ Rocca: a chugging, undulating cosmic disco revision that's surprisingly more organic in feel. Elsewhere, Aussie adventurer Dr Packer gives it an electrofunk flavoured house makeover and Pete Herbert turns in a fluid, Balearic-inspired rework full of heady synth lines and tumbling pianos.

"Eternal Love" is a soul monolith of Vandross proportions as Willie belts his guts up over a slippery synth boogie groove, classic 80s falsetto harmonies and brick-melting synth-toms. "Talking On A Funky Note" takes us to the early 90s with a Bobby Brown-style new-jack sound while "Over The Hump" brings us to an inspiring climax with lyrics of intestinal fortitude so heavy they'd make a world champion life coach blush. Review: Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel go from strength to strength, cruising their 18-wheeler disco wagon into the future without so much as a nudge on the brake pedal.
