  1. Dubplate Disco - "Pick Up" (Yam Who edit) (8:35)
  2. Motte - "Darkroom Boogie" (6:20)
Review: The first volume in the Disco Made Me Do It series features a couple of sought-after reworks that we reckon will be everywhere over the festive period. The headline attraction is undoubtedly Yam Who's A-side revision of DJ Koze anthem "Pick Up" (itself a housed-up revision of an old Melba Moore classic), which stretches out the dewy-eyed, string-drenched dancefloor bliss over eight and a half mesmerizing minutes. Motte takes over on the flip with "Darkroom Boogie", a peak-time chugger in which spacey, lo-fi synthesizer melodies and ear catching male and female vocals stretch out over a filter-sporting disco-house groove. While not quite as anthem-like as the A-side, it's a killer rework that's just crying out to be played to packed dancefloors.

  2. Brazilian Love Affair (7:22)
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** A couple of all time George Duke greats get the official remastered and reissue treatment here. The American songwriting legend's "I Want You for Myself' from 1979 gets a mighty Tom Moulton rework on the A side - which streamlines the essential groove of the original just nicely. On the flip, the sultry late night mood lighting of "Brazilian Love Affair" is funky, soulful and groovy in all the right amounts - the album of the same name from 1980 was hailed as his most popular. Duke was known primarily for thirty-odd solo albums, as well as his collaborations with other musicians - particularly Frank Zappa.

Review: Breakthrough release for Durerstuben here, as the Berlin based pair of David Hofmann and Till Gerloff make good on the promise shown via a stream of intermittent 12"s in the past few years with a debut on Koze's Pampa label. One listen to the three tracks on Street of Rane will likely have many checking Discogs for the availability of Hoffmann and Gerloff's previous work as Durerstuben; such is the instantly gratifying nature of their rich, vivid take on European deep house. Metro Area, Zapp and Tensnake are offered as potential reference points by the Pampa press release machine and it's hard to disagree with final track "Freiherr in der Wall" a particular speaker box laden delight.

  1. Magazine
  2. Xam
Review: Earlier this year, Mark E returned to the re-edit scene in which he made his name with the first E Versions 12". For those who remember his brilliant early work on Jisco Music and Golf Channel - all hypnotic disco loops and slow-house attitude - it was something of a surprise treat. Here he delivers more clandestine reworks in a similar vein, delivering two deliciously hypnotic, drawn-out grooves that transform familiar favourites into wide-eyed Balearic chuggers. "Magazine" is particularly potent since it slows down and smacks out Madonna's "Vogue", in the process turning the track into a creeping endorphin blast of epic proportions. "Xam" ups the tempo slightly, building the action around baggy accordion samples and rising and falling melodies.

Review: Earthboogie - aka London soundsystem owners Izaak Gray and Nicola Robinson - make their wax debut with three raw, groove laden disco blends. Digging deep into both afrofunk and Italo roots, there's a universal musical language that grabs you physically across all three cuts. "Mr Mystery" sits between Booker T & The Mgs and Daniele Baldelli while "Route Ten To Interzone" is an energetic township jam with added synth sheen. Finally we're seduced by the Balearic weaves, ripples, twangs and horns of "The EB Theme". A rainbow of vibes from start to finish, this one's hard to put down.

Review: Peckham rising: the Eccentric crew celebrate five years of parties with five more slabs of obscure, deck-ready cosmic gold. Both "Cosa Rosa" and "Wake Up" ease us in gently with shimmering synths and well-tempered slo-mo grooves but "Nar Nar Nehe" ups the energy with a rolling synth boogie groove that's peppered with layers or synth-tom percussion and dubby echoes. Those in need of a swamp wallow should head for the soaking wet bass of "Och Eye" before we're whisked away in an easterly direction on a vibe made purely of faraway twangs, dubby percussion and yearning atmospheres. Genuinely stunning.

Review: On this latest must-have missive, the Editorial crew has assembled an all-star cast of re-editors and house-loving disco rework merchants. Thrillingly, it contains a now rare outing from slo-mo specialist Duff Disco, whose atmospheric, beatdown style chugger "Always on My Mind" is undoubtedly one of the best things he's released in years. Props, too, to Irish disco-house specialists Get Down Edits, who weigh in with the warm and summery grooves of "Hey (What's Happening)". Elsewhere, Buzz Compass subtly beefs up and filters out a sleazy disco favourite on the constantly rising "U Deserve It", while Ed Wizard and Disco Double Dee get the party started in their inimitable style via a touch of disco/hip-hop fusion ("Moonlite").

  1. Forever (4:14)
  2. Love Has Never Passed Me By (3:30)
Review: SOL Discos present their third reissue with these two songs from Frank Eddie. Originally released on the by Eddie himself, most of the original 1000 pressed copies where abandoned back in South Miami, Florida. Influenced by soul and rock, Frank met with drummer and singer William Hopkins. They created a band together, which at the time, would also jam with people that would later become famous such as Steve Morse (Deep Purple), jazz steel-band player Othello Molineaux and Jaco Pastorius to name a few. Frank & William co-wrote the two songs on this record. They gathered the personnel and recorded it in four days. After unsuccessful meetings with major labels and partly discouraged by the music business, Frank decided to self-release the record on his Insync label. He worked on his own to sell it locally but sadly it didn't meet the audience it deserved. According to William, "The black radio stations would not play it because I did not give them cocaine or money, and the disco clubs had their own list to promote". Today, Frank Eddie is still active by playing American Rhythm & Blues and Jazz in Cuba, as well as supporting the Cuban musicians, bringing instruments to the Caribbean Nation.

This wondrous little imprint is providing us with some truly fine beats recently and, whether it's disco or anything dub-related, they've got that sleek touch to kill. Tamiko Jones' wonderful disco sensation gets a re-lick and is renamed "Can't Dub Without Your Love", while Sharon Jones' own party-ready slinger is dubbed "Tonight's Dub Night". The third instalment from the well known Brighton based record label sees the return of Eintopf alongside resident producers and label mates, breathing new life into unknown rarities. Retouched, reloved and reworked to offer a fresh spin on the originals, highlights are undoubtedly on the A side, with Cutty Sark's rework of a certain neon-lit boogie down number ("Proper Nawty"), the romantic and soulful number "Start Again" with Eintopf and Chalk Hill's respectful edit of a right classic ("Control Me") on the flip.

Review: We've come accustomed to Andrew Meecham using his Emperor Machine alias to deliver seriously hypnotic, modular synthesizer workouts. On 2500 Vol 1, he takes a different tack, serving up a trio of tracks created using his trusty MPC25000. Naturally, mind-altering electronic sounds remain the order of the day, with both "2500 Edit" and the even wilder "System 700 Jam" doffing a cap to vintage acid house, whilst retaining the much-loved looseness and dustiness of his regular productions. Flipside cut "System 100 Jam" is a sparse but pleasingly weird affair - think simple beats, and lots of curious electronic sounds - while Internasjonal boss Prins Thomas emphasizes Meecham's military percussion and dirty bass on his fine remix of "2500".

  2. Star Of The Disco (4:18)
Review: Astonishingly, original copies of Energize's 1979 private press single "Piece of Class" have changed hands for over 500 quid online. Helpfully, Rain & Shine have decided to save us all a few bob by slinging out this licensed reissue. The title track is something of a bustling disco-funk gem - a genuinely wonderful fusion of hazy vocals, dueling horn solos, spacey synthesizer flourishes and driving bass guitar. B-side "Star of the Disco" is an even more up-tempo affair, with mazy saxophone solos, rasping horn stabs and starry jazz-funk keys riding a walking bassline and high-octane disco drums.

  1. Leave The City (2:45)
  2. Wake Up (3:16)
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Epsilon were a cosmic funk/rock four piece from Marburg, Germany that released three albums between 1970 and 1976. While their debut LP went for a much more progressive rock style, the subsequent releases were a mixture of heavy rock and blues when frontman Michael Winzkowski (ex Orange Peel, Nosferatu) joined the band. This EP was originally released in 1975 and features the bluesy rock n roll swagger of "Leave The City" on the A side, and the super sleazy disco funk of "Wake Up"on the flip - which is absolutely terrific! Winzkowski went on to further (yet short lived) success as Michael Wynn/The Michael Wynn Band up until 1983, even breaking into the American market at one point.

Review: Since first appearing last summer the label has retained its air of self imposed anonymity, while keeping the spotters busy with a supremely rewarding approach to digging up and re-editing "lost classics from the raw, decadent and formative birth of club music" in a manner befitting of modern dancefloors. People who class themselves as knowledgeable on the sounds that pumped out from the mixing desk of Ron Hardy at the height of his popularity probably won't have much trouble placing the source material for the four tracks here, but the genius of the EROS series is the way they've been edited which betrays a mastery and understanding of the music a legion of soundcloud dwelling hopefuls could only dream of. As the series' final release, it's hard not to think of the often stated platitude that all good things must come to an end.

Review: Over the course of 12 months from the summer of June 2011 onwards, the mysterious Eros offered a portal back to the raw, decadent & formative birth of club music through 3 superb 12" releases. Fast forward three years and Eros has raised once again, Lazarus style, with the commencement of a new series that veers away from the electronic focus of those previous records to the outright flamboyant styles of disco. All three tracks here are untitled, so the disco scholars out there will have plenty of fun seeking out the source material but really the dancers will have more reacting to these cuts. Track 2 in particular features some sublime phasing and edits.

  2. Take You To A Secret Place (dub mix)
  3. Take You To A Secret Place (Kuniyuki Hard remix)
  4. Take You To A Secret Place (Angophora remix)
Review: Not An Animal are known for their heated takes on the art of disco-sampling house music, and Ess O Ess is one of the key factors in defining that sound. This comes through in spades on Take You To A Secret Place, where the title track comes marching out atop a deadly bassline that will cut through any mix to get the people freaking out. The dub mix is equally deadly, flying a generous dose of cosmic sparkle into the mix without losing the punch in the original production. Kuniyuki Hard takes a daring approach that slows the track down to a creep and emphasises space and tension. The Angophora version is even more drastic, seemingly stripping all the recognisable elements of the track out and leaving behind a plaintive thread of ambient instrumentation.

Review: After strong turns on Ene Records and Love On The Rocks back in 2014, Ess O Ess make a welcome return with this surefooted single for Not An Animal. "Flamingoes & Wombles & The Blue Oyster Cult" is an urgent, driving slice of motorik disco powered by arpeggios, live bass and shamanistic chanting that calls to mind Yello's chart-baiting classic "The Race". The A side version keeps the synth levels high throughout, while on the flip the "Cyber Dub" teases the ingredients out for a more subtle effect. Whichever side you plump for though, the transcendental qualities are strong on this 12".

If this launch release is anything to go by, there's a touch of class, knowledge and connections too. Celebrating the phenomenon that is the Muse Of Transition, Susana's allure is compounded by her political sexuality in the wake of Franco's demise. Review: Lyon-dwelling deep house producer Ethyene was undoubtedly one of the stars of 2017, delivering a string of hazy, dusty and saucer-eyed singles for the likes of Kolour Ltd and Moonrise Hill Material. Here he surfaces on Editorial with a fine selection of smoldering deep house-tinted disco reworks. He begins with the lolloping, loved-up sweetness of "Rains Over Occident", where glistening jazz guitar solos and warm chords recline over a laidback house groove, before charging towards disco dancefloors via the '80s soul-meets-jazz-funk shuffle of "Walkin' In The Sunshine". On the flip he turns a smooth modern soul love jam into an exquisite chunk of jazzy deep house ("Free To Give") and showcases his love of Rhodes-heavy broken beat on closer "Solitary Sex".

"Free As A Man" is a beautifully laid back but funky offering that speaks to all kinds of good times. Jex Opolis turns in a remix of the track that has a little more bite to suit the later demands of the dancefloor. "Don't Wanna Talk About It" sees Etienne linking up with Disco D and winding all kinds of slick strutting business into his sound, and then "Rhythm For The Garden" heads off into wonderful tribal percussion that serves as a handy tool for DJs who want to get some rich drum sounds into their set.
