The Kudu Fantasy Versions (12" in hand-stamped sleeve)
Cat: TJ 002. Rel: 27 Apr 17
  1. Kamby (version) (6:15)
  2. Saskwatch (version) (6:56)
Review: Last year's first outing from the Tiff's Joint label - a gleeful, hard-to-pigeonhole fusion of global musical styles and contemporary dancefloor chops - has naturally raised expectations ahead of this second 12". This one comes from Deoke, a previously unheralded producer keen to present us with his Kudu Fantasy Versions. On A-side "Kamby" he smartly underpins loose and vibrant South American hand percussion with the locked-in pulse of drum machine rhythms, throwing trippy electronics, rich Afrobeat bass and tropical sounds on top. While impressive, it's nowhere near as overwhelmingly positive as B-side "Saskwatch", where undulating synthesizer lines, jazzy guitar flourishes and rush-inducing chords wrap themselves around a killer, densely layered Afro-house groove.

  2. Tala - "Wick Up" (6:06)
  3. Jacob F Desvarieux - "Rifyx" (Kuniyuki edit) (8:02)
Review: Endless Flight has done us all a favour by shining a light on the little-known work of French zouk maestro Jacob F Deviscaux. Here, they round of their retrospective series of "anthology" releases with another red-hot three-tracker. Side-one begins with "Rifyx", a wonderfully summery, horn-laden concoction from the musician's 1985 album Oh Madina that somehow joins the dots between jazz-funk, zouk and disco, before continuing with Deviscaux's 1982 Afro-funk/synth-boogie/electro-zouk production for vocalist Tala. Best of all, though, is Kuniyuki's stupendously celebratory flipside re-edit of "Rifyx", which turns the all-too-short original into an eight-minute slab of audio sunshine.

  1. Make Me Wanna (3:22)
  2. Wait Up (3:28)
Review: The latest dinked 7" single on Tim Zawada and Ben Van Dyke's essential Star Creature label comes from Diamond Oritz, AKA boogie and '80s soul revivalist Jeremy Diamond-Oritz. While there are many overlooked gems in the producer's back catalogue, there's little as rush inducing as "Make Me Wanna". A slick, soulful song with authentically rubbery and kaleidoscopic '80s soul/boogie production, it sounds like a long lost classic. The breezy, slap bass-wielding instrumental B-side, "Wait Up", is arguably even better. Like the A-side, it boasts some serious good synth action and a groove that you just have to dance to.

  1. La Massagiste (3:39)
  2. Exotique (2:18)
Review: Steamy Brazilian disco soul from provocative dancer/actor Wilma Dias. "La Massagiste" takes off where Painel De Controle's "Relax" left us three years before in 1979. Sultry and slinky with Wilma's breathy French purring over a shiny, loose-strummed funk groove "La Massagiste", it sits sweetly between euro disco and pure Latin soul. "Exotique" raises the heat with a throbbing funk riff, vibrant horns and more direct spoken dulcets from the cult figure herself. Scorchio.

Review: Sampled by everyone from J-Lo to Jay-Z, Manu Dibango's 1972 classic is perhaps one of the most influential and heavily referenced afrofunk tracks of all time. Echoing with shades of every genre we know and love today, it still sounds just as timeless, infectious and ultimately agenda-setting today as the first time you heard it. If your collection doesn't sport this original yet, now is most certainly the time.

  1. The Feeling Is Strong (7:36)
  2. Long Time Dancing (7:34)
Review: The latest volume in Kolour LTD's popular ten-inch series comes from Dicky Trisco, a producer arguably better known for his impeccable scalpel jobs than his original productions. The two tracks here sit somewhere between the two, building tasty dancefloor tools out a swathe of samples and a handful of new musical elements. Rahaan style A-side "The Feeling Is Strong" peppers a rubbery, bass-heavy disco groove with jammed-out electric piano lines and razor-sharp guitars. On the flip, Trisco adds weighty new drums to a looped-up old disco/boogie fusion jam. So while the vocal-heavy samples scream disco, the alien synths and mutant funk electronics are closer to vintage electrofunk.

  2. Joutro Mundo - "Tata Giro" (5:30)
Review: Destination Rio: Barefoot Beats stamp into the new year with these two sunkissed, hip-slinking workouts. Disco doyen Dicky rolls out a steamy percussive affair that builds on every 16 with layers of percussion, horns and dubby overlays. Flip for "Tata Giro" from Rio's own Joutro Mundo; an instant beach number with big vocals, fantastic attention to detail and a squidged out bassline that wriggles without end. Soul for the soles... Barefoot kill it again.

  1. Clean Up The Line (7:19)
  2. Take A Trip (9:31)
Review: Special Edition's first release was arguably one of the strongest re-edit EPs of recent times, with Italian newcomer Kiu D delivering a trio of killer dancefloor reworks. It's a tough act to follow, but old pals Dicky Trisco and Peza are more than up to the job on this delayed follow-up. "Clean Up The Line" makes great use of crunchy, guitar-laden loops from Sweet's "Funk It Up", combining these with bouncy house drums and occasional bursts of electronic effects to create a strutting dancefloor banger. Flip for "Take A Trip", which fuses bits from a deep disco classic with brand new, nu-disco flavoured synths and some gentle - if sharp - acid lines.

  2. Dog (Diesel/Jarvis edit)
Review: The 34th record from the enduring Moton imprint should really come with a sticker stating "Elder house statesmen of the world, this record is for you!" It sees Moton regulars Diesel & Jarvis dig deep into their personal archives of weapons grade dancefloor edits for two absolute pearls. Lead track "Y U Fall" is one of those rolling deep house numbers in the classic mould, brandishing a rather deadly saxophone and added crowd noise whilst "Dog" is a more laid back affair, tweaking some tropical disco flavours for a warm up flex. Let's hope this is the first of many Classic 12"s!

Losing Me (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Losing Me (4:55)
  2. Get Up (5:40)
  3. Be Truthful (6:52)
  4. Change It (6:12)
Review: Billing themselves as "a crew of beat junkies raised in the legendary "Sugar Shack" studio," Difusion make their first appearance on their own label in style with some righteous edits that make some decisive cuts where it counts for pure dancefloor dynamite. "Losing Me" is more of a rolling breakbeat-inflected house workout with a deadly delay treatment on the vocals that drops in at just the right time to surely set a club off at any hour. "Get Up" is a more sultry cut but it still hits heavy, and "Be Truthful" and "Change It" both offer up differing soulful angles to make this a highly versatile record for all kinds of situations.

  4. Askin You (5:24)
Review: Self-styled "Sugar Shack Studio based beat junkies" Difusion pricked the ears of more than a few disco selectors with a pair of self-released re-edit EPs released in 2016 and 2017 respectively. The folks behind Editorial Records were clearly impressed, because they've snapped up this EP of rearrangements from the shadowy collective. Our pick of the bunch is probably the breakbeat-driven disco-funk hustle of "Can I Do It", though many will be attracted to the slightly more soulful and sensual orchestrated disco bustle of "I Can Feel It". The quality threshold remains high throughout, however, with the more relaxed "Askin' You" and delay-laden peak-time bounce of "Afrocal" also impressing.

  4. Right Now
Review: The Difusion crew turned some heads last year with the low-key release of their first grip of cult edits, and now they're back with a second installment that keeps the source material obscure, the treatment respectful and the vibes pure and positive. "Someday" is a killer simmering slice of disco funk, while "On The Scene" slows things down and turns up the 70s bombast with Philly strings and brass blasts aplenty. "Freaksta" takes things in a more cosmic direction, while "Right Now" aims right for Studio 54 indebted flamboyance, all stirring diva vocals and bold production to get everyone freaking the right way.

Fusion (Broadcast mix) (1-sided 12")
Cat: FT 028. Rel: 29 Apr 16
  1. Fusion (Broadcast mix) (6:18)
Review: Future Times' occasional, single-sided 12" singles usually hit the spot, and this effort from the little-known Will DiMaggio is no different. Boasting the kind of spiraling jazz-funk synthesizer work that makes you want to close your eyes and succumb to the vibe, "Fusion (Broadcast Mix)" sounds like the kind of record that should be played at six in the morning, just as the sun is beginning to peep over the horizon. DiMaggio's magical synthesizer work takes centre stage, naturally, but is complimented perfectly by some rubbery slap bass, unfussy drum machine rhythms and just the right amount of blissful chords.

  1. Right My File (8:09)
  2. I Want Your Back (6:05)
Review: Suave Parisian scalpel-botherer Dimitri From Paris continues to churn out top notch re-edits, slightly altering his famous production persona from label to label. Here, he delivers a second 12" for Razor 'N' Tape under the Dimitri From Brooklyn alias. Like its' predecessor, it features a couple of stone cold bangers. "Right My File" offers a thunderous, housed-up take on a lesser-known cover version of Dan Hartman's grandiose disco smasher "Relight My Fire" - all vocal breakdowns, big builds and big-lunged sing-along moments. As for "I Want Your Back", it re-casts Dimitri as The Reflex, laying down a version of The Jacksons' "I Want You Back" that sounds like it was done from the multi-track parts. It is, of course, dancefloor dynamite.

  3. Without Rob (5:46)
Review: Razor 'N' Tape's two previous servings of Dimitri From Brooklyn edits (and, yes, they're the work of legendary DJ/producer Dimitri From Paris) were both must-haves, so hopes are naturally high for this third volume. Predictably, the disco-loving Frenchman is on fine form once more, laying down a trio of interpretations that breathe new life into classic jams. While the A-side "Kettle America" (say it phonetically) is something of a cheeky treat - impressively chopping between hard-wired guitar riffs and the original track's bustling disco groove - it's "I Knead You", an end-of-night, lights-up version of a Sylvester cut that smartly emphasizes the song's gospel origins, that really sparkles. "Without Rob", a harmonica-heavy rearrangement of a well-known favourite, completes another essential package.

Review: Two massive edits from one of the true disco kings: Dimitri ups sticks from Paris to Loisada and the only things he's packed are two out-and-out classics from Donny Hathaway and Johnny Hammond Smith. "Talkin' Bout" is a lolloping loose funk ghetto safari that pumps with so much funk it's criminal. "La Victori Xocolat", meanwhile, is a Hammond-heavy shakedown that gives the original 1975-released "Los Conquistadores Chocolate" the groove-heavy extension its always dreamt of. Highly limited, highly funky.

  2. Don't You Feel The Same (5:38)
  3. Zanzibar (5:51)
Review: The legendary Dimitri From Paris & DJ Rocca are back on Berlin via Munich's Gomma imprint. Dimitri comes from the Parisian school of disco. He first appeared with his debut album Sacrebleu in 1996 alongside with the first French house wave, such as St.Germain, Super Discount and Daft Punk. Some years ago he teamed up with Italian producer, DJ and man of many talents DJ Rocca. He might be known to many for his work as Ajello and Crimea X. Among the many names he produced music for, he also made tracks with cosmic disco innovator DJ Daniele Baldelli. When Rocca and Dimitri are in the studio together, they somehow have a magic touch: as heard here on these sleek and sexy four tracks. The neon-lit and pop inflected '80's groove of "One For Frankie" is a surefire party starter: it's all about the Moog bassline and those epic panpipes. "Don't You Feel The Same" channels that classic French Touch sound like contemporaries such as DJ Falcon or Alan Braxe on this feelgood late night anthem.

Review: Back In The Day marks the second appearance from Local Talk regulars Dirtytwo on J Kriv and Aaron Dae's Razor 'N' Tape imprint. Like their last outing, Back In The Day sees them offering up an impressive blend of bumpin' house and filter-heavy re-edits with a heavy emphasis on party starting. While the murky, basement-bothering title track, and Daniel Leeseman's baggier, disco-house rework, are impressive, it's the EP's other two tracks that are really floating our boat. Check, in particular, the string-laden, bass-heavy sleaze of "Last Night", which boasts a spine-tingling breakdown and some decidedly sweaty female vocals. That said, the slower "Estrelar" - a chopped-up, looped, filter-fiddling rework of the Marcos Valle track of the same name - is also rather fine.

Review: Infamous Parisian afterparty Discomatin update the edit series they launched earlier this year with another clutch of beautifully modified obscurities. Once again we're treated to the full spread as the collective lay down the sunny side grooves: "Show Me" is a brilliantly kitsch moment in disco with spoken word that guarantees dancefloor humour. "I Need To Meet You" whisks us off to the horizon on a yacht while "Le Paradis C'est L'enfer" is an emphatic piece of French electroboogie that's so raunchy it could make Gainsbourg. Finally we hit "Deboto Love Song". A serious end-of-night (or end-of-morning in the case of Discomatin) unity cut, if the harmonies don't have grown men on their knees you're doing it all wrong.

As legend has it, he was previously a Eurodance producer that released some hits in the 90s. After a traumatic experience, he escaped to Peru and retired from the music business. During those years he composed music for himself and then sold the rights to a label to release all those tracks - on the condition that his real identity was not revealed. This is part of a new series named Editales, and on the first volume here we have got the lo-slung tropical vibes of "Berimbau" on the A side, and the well funky (and rather sensual!) vocal delight "You Know Nothing" on the flip.

His love for the original US deep house sound remains unabated on this new 12" for Ornaments, Tribute, with the title track notable for some deft sampling of cult Detroit DJ The Electrifying Mojo. Review: Sex Tags' UFO offshoot has been rather quiet of late. In fact, this 12" from co-founder DJ Fett Burger is the sub-label's first release since 2014. As usual, the Norwegian eccentric has delivered a set of skewed, off-kilter tracks that defy easy categorization. Opener "PUB18", for example, sits somewhere between low slung, Idjut Boys style dub disco and glassy-eyed dream house, while "Edging On The Streets" is a dreamy, old school breakbeat workout that could have been made way back in 1989. Flip for the humid, head-in-the-clouds, analogue-rich deep house bump of "Esperanza 411" and "Sunshine", a spacey, bongo-laden revision of the same track designed for hazy sunrises and sticky Adriatic sunsets.
