  1. Dirty Channels - "Watchin Out" (vs Danny Russel) (5:59)
  2. Frazelle - "Today Is the Day (Linkwood Chop)" (5:18)
Review: Athens Of The North embrace the festival season with two exceptional floor-focussed edits of previous releases they've liberated from dusty crates and damp basements. Taking the lead on the A we have the most upbeat cut AOTN have ever put out as Dirty Channels give bang for you buck with an uptempo jacking twist on Split Decision Band's "Watchin Out". Meanwhile on the B Frazelle's "Today Is The Day" is given just a little DJ friendly tweakery with more spacious and on-grid drum work. An exciting development from the Edinburgh label, let's hope we see the AOTN logo on 12" again soon.

Back In The Day EP (orange vinyl 12")

  1. Back In The Day (7:18)
  2. Estrelar (4:40)
  3. Back In The Day (Daniel Leseman remix) (6:09)
  4. Last Night (6:03)
Review: Back In The Day marks the second appearance from Local Talk regulars Dirtytwo on J Kriv and Aaron Dae's Razor 'N' Tape imprint. Like their last outing, Back In The Day sees them offering up an impressive blend of bumpin' house and filter-heavy re-edits with a heavy emphasis on party starting. While the murky, basement-bothering title track, and Daniel Leeseman's baggier, disco-house rework, are impressive, it's the EP's other two tracks that are really floating our boat. Check, in particular, the string-laden, bass-heavy sleaze of "Last Night", which boasts a spine-tingling breakdown and some decidedly sweaty female vocals. That said, the slower "Estrelar" - a chopped-up, looped, filter-fiddling rework of the Marcos Valle track of the same name - is also rather fine.

For The Love Of Money (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: MRB 7133. Rel: 31 Jan 18
  1. For The Love Of Money (4:05)
  2. For The Love Of Money (disco dub) (4:14)
Review: Disco Dub Band's "For The Love of Money", a one-off collaboration between producer Davitt Sigerson and reggae musician Mike Dorane, has long been considered something of a classic by those who like their disco to come with a big dose of dub-wise flavour. Here the instrumental O'Jays cover, which originally appeared on the Movers label in 1976, is given the remix treatment by long-time fans Mr Bongo. The superb A-side, in which Dorane's instrumental talents take centre stage, naturally comes accompanied by the frequently played Dub interpretation, a typically wild and bass-heavy affair that sounds like it was mixed "live" in one take in true Lee Perry/King Tubby style. If it's not already in your collection, it should be.

  3. Le Paradis C'est L'enfer (5:16)
  4. Deboto Love Song (5:14)
Review: Infamous Parisian afterparty Discomatin update the edit series they launched earlier this year with another clutch of beautifully modified obscurities. Once again we're treated to the full spread as the collective lay down the sunny side grooves: "Show Me" is a brilliantly kitsch moment in disco with spoken word that guarantees dancefloor humour. "I Need To Meet You" whisks us off to the horizon on a yacht while "Le Paradis C'est L'enfer" is an emphatic piece of French electroboogie that's so raunchy it could make Gainsbourg. Finally we hit "Deboto Love Song". A serious end-of-night (or end-of-morning in the case of Discomatin) unity cut, if the harmonies don't have grown men on their knees you're doing it all wrong.

  1. Berimbau (8:12)
  2. You Know Nothing (4:52)
Review: The next missive from Fango's Degustibus stable is from Ditongo aka Batongo who uses this alias for disco edits. As legend has it, he was previously a Eurodance producer that released some hits in the 90s. After a traumatic experience, he escaped to Peru and retired from the music business. During those years he composed music for himself and then sold the rights to a label to release all those tracks - on the condition that his real identity was not revealed. This is part of a new series named Editales, and on the first volume here we have got the lo-slung tropical vibes of "Berimbau" on the A side, and the well funky (and rather sensual!) vocal delight "You Know Nothing" on the flip.

  1. Tribute (original) (11:38)

Review: The bond between Sascha Dive and fellow German operation Ornaments Music dates back to 2008 when the Deep Vibes boss put out the Deepest America 12". His love for the original US deep house sound remains unabated on this new 12" for Ornaments, Tribute, with the title track notable for some deft sampling of cult Detroit DJ The Electrifying Mojo. Around his legendary tones, Dive crafts a bone shaking house groove with chords positively dripping with emotion. Bust out the B side and Underground Quality's Jus Ed lays down a killer phased out Deep Sleep remix of the track whilst Dive adds his own filter heavy Disco version. A fine 12".

Review: Room 101 might be where things are banished but "Room 202" is where it's at. A place where things are brought back from the past and celebrated for their true virtue; things like grainy, warm analogue production and robust grooves layered with devilishly simple details. With crunchy kicks and shimmering keys thrown in, you'll want to stay in "Room 202" long past last orders. "La Nuit" takes us deeper into the wee hours on a chugging new beat rocket that's steam-powered by a Moroderist bass arpeggio and more disco pops and bubbles than your suggest weekly intake allows. Spanish newcomer DIY 1990 builds us up again!

  3. Elkin & Nelson - "Abran Paso - Ahoa (Enrolle)" (4:08)
  4. Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony - "Spanish Boogie" (3:33)
Review: Soon, DJ Harvey will release The Sound of Mercury Rising, a compilation themed around some of the music championed at his summer residency at Pikes Hotel, Ibiza. This four-track taster 12" not only acts as a sampler for the CD version, but also offers the chance to own four excellent and hard-to-find gems. You'll struggle to find a more Balearic disco cut than Danish outfit Tore's 1979 killer "She's a Lady" - think the Bee-Gees with Flamenco guitars - while Elkin & Nelson's "Abran Paso - Aboa (Enrole)" is a spiraling chunk of flamenco-psychedelia fusion. Elsewhere, Van McCoy & Soul City Symphony's "Spanish Boogie" is a jaunty disco number full of crunchy Clavinet lines and rising horn lines, while Tony Esposito's "Danza Dell'Acqua" is as eccentric and wide-eyed as they come.

  2. Paresse (6:49)
  3. Fall (7:13)
Review: Les Disques De La Mort regular DJ Oil has hardly been prolific over the last few years, which makes his decision to release two EPs almost simultaneously rather an odd one. We're not complaining of course, because Telephunk - the second of the pair - is amongst his best work to date. The title track, which stretches out across the A-side, is particularly good, with Oil contrasting rubbery, boogie style bass and pulsating, Italo-disco style Arpeggio lines with creepy horror synths and foreboding electronics. Turn to the flip for more arpeggio-heavy action in the shape of the druggy and intoxicated "Paresse", before Oil indulges his downtempo roots via the rolling instrumental trip-hop of "Fall".

  4. Slumber (El Diablo's Social Club remix)
Review: After taking us on a drug chug at the start of the year DJ Rocca serves up 2 tracks for the next EDSC Release.

Lets Go Party kicks things off.... stabby chords, Roland percussion, catchy vocal shots, bass-line and massive E'd up breakdowns make this a must have slate for your box.

Th remix comes in the form of an Italo banger from a fave of the El Diablo's cartel - Brioski who goes straight for the heart of the dance floor and rips it right out.

Slumber slows the pace down a bit sounding like something from a late 70's Italian horror movie...pulsating chords & echoey piano reminiscent of Claudio Simonetti & John Carpenter.

El Diablo's Social Club remix stays in the same vein making making sparse use of the eerie piano whilst adding a chuggy bassline, heavy arps and some extra guitars courtesy of Crazy P's Tim Davies.

Review: It's quite a surprise that perennial Italian disco jammer DJ Rocca hasn't linked up with Rothmans before, but on the label's first release of 2016 he makes up for lost time with a grip of tracks positively dripping with full-fat synthy goodness. "Kratos" packs in a serious Italo thrum with its wonderful arpeggio bassline, bursting with optimism as every buoyant lead line piles on top of the forward-marching beat. "400 Fonk" meanwhile flips the script with a cheeky, bouncy beast of an analogue jam to get heads nodding like Wally Badarou just took the controls. Daniele Baldelli then blasts "Kratos" into the stratosphere with his muscular "Electropsychomix".

Review: Neil Diablo's To Rack & Ruin edit series has been on fire of late, delivering killer reworks by The Rejected, Phil Gerus, and Que Sakamoto & NT. Volume 13 contains a quartet of collaborative reworks by Italian pals DJ Rocca and N2B. First up is "Inergy", a dirty and full-throttle disco workout that contains a fantastic extended percussion break midway through. Rocca and N2B reach for the disco delays on the super-sweet shuffler "Mister Cheryl", before whipping their shirts off for a muscular disco-funk hoedown (the sax-laden stomp that is "Music For Your Lose"). Finally, the tape delays return on the dense, disco-goes-proto-house closer "Powa", which may well be our pick of the bunch.

  4. Dilemma (Garage radio edit) (3:26)
Review: Following appearances on the interconnected Distant Hawaii and Lobster Theremin labels, DJ Sonikku (AKA British producer Tony Dowson) drops a mysterious, hand-stamped 12". It boasts contrasting versions of the previously unheard "Dilemma", a chiming and bouncy concoction that joins the dots between thrusting proto-house, Yellow Magic Orchestra and cheery '80s synth-pop. The latter influence is clearer on the 'Original Vocal' version, which makes great use of a relatively well-known acapella. On the flip, Dowson gives the track a radical overhaul, laying the ultra-positive original melodies over a sparse but weighty, two-step influenced groove. It's not garage in the traditional sense, and some may find it a little on the sickly-sweet side. There's no denying, though, that it sounds like a scene anthem in the making.

  4. Alright (3:29)
Review: Long-standing French funk veteran Vas delivers another deep disco dispatch... "Wizard Funk" lives up to its name with a ballsy, almost dubby stomp and a bassline so juicy it could grow flowers in the desert. "Cream" dims the lights, dips the tempo and slowly strips off every musical garment to reveal a slinky, naked bassline. "The Moment" is subverted repurpose of Inner Life's Salsoul standard "Moment Of My Life" where the groove and backing vocals hog the spotlight. Ending on a sweet, skanky high, Vas brings this show to an end with a beautiful rework of Keith Hudson & Family Man's "I'm Alright". Sporting a new coat of drums and a tripped out synth lines, it's an instant soul soother... And a great way to end an awesomely broad EP.

Review: Vas continues his prolific editing work with four more crafty extensions. First up a loopy twist on The Dells "All About The Paper" where the groove is kept locked with only snippets of the vocals ghosting in and out of the mix. Next up is a storming shake of Powerline's "Double Journey" (which has been famously edited and sampled by everyone from Harvey to Morales). Deeper again Margie Alexander gets the treatment as her steamy soul showdown from 1975 gets the foot-heavy focus. Finally we segue into electro boogie pastures as "Gigolo" closes the show with deep treacle spoken word and synth so soaking wet you won't need to wash for a week. Exemplary.

Review: Sweet psychedelic pop vibes abound as Django Django unleash another fine ditty from their eponymous album. Quite whether they've just misspelt a comet name, or they just love dancing in hard, icy rain we don't know... But we love all versions on this release. The very much in-demand Daniel Avery gets all slo-mo acid on our jackseys while Jealov takes us into some very strange, warped electronica pastures with a Radioheadalicious rub. The band themselves get involved with their own cheeky, not to mention stomping, alternative "Bail Hop" while Bullion completes the package with his own beautiful take that will please all cosmic fans.

Review: Somewhat confusingly, the two Al Dobson tracks featured on this must-have 12" are not taken from his superb Rye Lane LP, but rather a CD of possible album tracks the producer gave to Rhythm Section International last year. Both cuts are typical of his dusty, rhythm-centric sound, and are particularly sparse. This, though, just makes the remixes even more remarkable. Polish producers PTaki turn "Santiago Black" into a midtempo chunk of analogue-sounding midtempo house, complete with drifting vocal samples and a wonderfully dubby bassline. Arguably even better is Ruf Dug's eccentric version of "Kirton Street", which wobbles, pulses and darts with chiming melodies, rough sub bass and hissing, cymbal-laden percussion, while retaining the blazed feel of Dobson Jr's original.

Review: As always, Washington DC' Peoples Potential Unlimited have resurfaced another rare-as-hens-teeth boogie number and, while we are madly in love with this label, we need to appreciate more just how important they've been to the survival of funk music in recent years. This time, it's Donald Walker's only EP to grace their catalogue, an artist who went by the name of Dohnnie on his solo projects. "Dancin Is Your Love" exudes funk from every corner, backed by a badman bassline, some freaky guitar strings, and Walker's own seductive disco tone. It's a one-track EP precisely because this tune deserves to grace a whole side of a 12". Utterly unmissable, and heavily recommended.

Review: Valerie Dore's "Get Closer" has never been one of Italo-disco's most in-demand records, though the Milan-made synth-pop style chugger is undoubtedly something of a slept-on classic. Running Back boss Gerd Janson is clearly a fan, though, because he's decided to give it the remix treatment. He provides his own "Coy Club Edit" interpretation, which sticks closely to the original while removing some of the track's cheesier elements, while DJ Oyster reaches for the filters and provides a "Tool Time" cut for adventurous DJs (think vocal loops and the like). The headline attraction, though, is undoubtedly the Tiger & Woods remix, which reconfigures the track as a loopy and loved-up chunk of saucer-eyed Italo-disco/deep house/electrofunk fusion.

Review: District of Columbia-based deep house imprint Better Listen has barely put a foot wrong since launching late last year. Predictably, their latest missive, which comes courtesy of rising star Dorsi Plantar, is another beauty. Title track "Everlast" opens proceedings via jazzy, jammed-out pino riffs, dewy-eyed electronic flourishes and dusty deep house beats, before "You're Solid as Fuck" re-focuses attention on a chopped-and-looped deep house/jazz-funk fusion. Flip to the B-side for the grandiose orchestration of disco-house pumper "Fool's Gold" and the near-Balearic sweetness of sun-soaked chunky house closer "Babesonite", which comes on like a disco-house enthusiast's tribute to Pepe Bradock's "Deep Burnt".

Review: Originally recorded, self-published and released in 1985 by a school teacher in Miami for educational purposes, copies of 'Do You Know Black History' did not circulate much further than Florida's public school libraries and the record has been shrouded in mystery up until now, thanks to this official reissue from Backatcha Records. Dr Mary Sullivan Bain recorded the song to be used as motivational tool in the Miami-Dade public school system she taught in. Produced with no label constraints, this cross-genre grail sits comfortably in many boxes with a cosmic blend of 808's, bass synths, deep chords, live percussion and effects dubbed into the mix. The production leans towards the electronic diy framework that became central to the local sound of south side Miami. Whilst the categories are blurred, what's clear is that Bain was thinking outside of the box, both musically and educationally.
