Lion (12")
Cat: MEDI 098. Rel: 23 Oct 17
  1. Lion (feat Taso (Teklife)) (7:26)
  2. Messages (4:26)
  3. Ruffneck (4:44)
Review: The unstoppable New Zealand duo continue their deep, dark and dangerous adventures with a return to Deep Medi Music and three outstanding slabs of authentic dub weight; "Lion" roars with serious bass weight and the textured downpitched tones of long-standing collaborator Taso, "Messages" rolls with poignant subdued chords and a measured, pensive air while "Ruffneck" rumbles with a sub/kick combo so woozy it needs breathalysing if it's within 10 metres of a vehicle. The lion awakes once more.

  6. Inside Your Thoughts (feat Lelijvld) (3:07)
Review: New Zealand sub-loaders Truth unleash their fourth album Wilderness Of Mirrors to wax on their own DDD imprint. Taking some of the album's many highlights and reframing them into a sizzling six pack of sonic contrast and grimy gully, it's beef from the off as Strikez gets smoky on "Monster" and "D Double E" flexes bear murderation over an industrial strength before the title track takes us deeper into the abyss. Flip for the swaggering grunter "The Moon" (one of Truth's heaviest bassline cuts to date), T Man's militant preaches on "Soldier" and the lush velvet Portisheadian soul of "Inside Your Thoughts". Welcome to the wilderness...

  1. Wushu Hand (4:26)
  2. 2 Worlds (4:01)
  3. Silence Soundboy (4:03)
  4. Pablo (3:44)
Review: Last seen blowing us kisses on Pearly Whites, the London deepsmith touches down on White Peach with four fittingly juicy bass jams. "Wushu Hands" flickers with eastern instrumental elements over a tightly rolled jitter-prone kick/snare combo, "2 Worlds" strips us right back to our undergarments with only a spacious drum arrangement and groaning bassline to keep us warm, "Silence Soundboy" is a beautifully simple bassline affair where the low end is given lavish expanses of room to roam and mutate. Finally "Pablo" pays tribute with eerie cinematic textures, weeping lead lines and a wicked sense of unease. Sound.

  2. Charlux - "Riposte" (5:17)
  3. Nights - "Conflict" (4:42)
  4. Dr Hugo - "Warrior" (5:36)
  5. Polonis - "Slice Roll 3" (3:58)
  6. Sir Hiss - "Blood Diamond" (3:58)
Review: This debut release from the Dream Eater label is little less than a statement of intent. It features cuts from no less than six members of the extended crew crammed onto one action-packed 12". Proc Fiskal kicks things off with the thursting sub-bass, cut-up hip-hop yelps and full-throttle grime beats of "Come Here", before Charlux shows his melodious side on the jaunty goodness of "Riposte". There's some ghostly synths and aggressive grooves from Nights, a deep dive into sparse and heavy dubstep territory from Dr Hugo, and a touch of glacial, post-grime brilliance from Polonis. Best of all, though, is Sir Hiss's "Blood Diamond", which effortlessly underpins marimba style melodies with a punchy, post-dubstep beat.

  24. Rude Kid - "Fabric" (2:36)
Review: Many people are proclaiming the mix CD dead, but Fabric are still approaching the format with a sense of renewed ingenuity. Mathew Jonson's recent effort took shape as a recording of the Cobblestone Jazzer's live performance at the club's birthday celebrations last year, whilst the latest Fabriclive mix is quite a landmark. Put together by longtime grime bastion Logan Sama, the 24-track mix CD has been accompanied by a 4LP set featuring every instrumental cut used!! A brief glance at the tracklisting for this vinyl set shows Logan has called on some true grime royalty with productions from Wiley, JME, Kahn & Neek, Jammer, Preditah, and Footsie all contributing and excelling.

Peach Bits Vol 5
Cat: WPR 020. Rel: 01 May 17
  1. Fallow & Alex Compton - "String Assassin" (3:49)
  2. Kaido - "Kennedy Bridge" (4:27)
  3. Zha - "Without" (3:47)
  4. Nakes - "Moksha" (4:02)
Review: White Peach's admirable Peach Bits series, which draws together previously unreleased gems from the label's growing roster of artists, has reached its fifth volume. While previous volumes have largely aimed squarely at the dancefloor, this edition is more eclectic in outlook. Compare, for example, the paranoid, exotic darkness of Kaido's deep dubstep rattler "Kennedy Bridge" and the Eastern mysticism - via the Spanish Riviera - of Zha's "Without", which pairs gentle dubstep rhythms with lilting Japanese melody lines and flamenco guitar flourishes. Or, for that matter, the drowsy, post-rock-meets-dubstep haze of Fallow and Alex Compton's "String Assassin", and the blissfully exotic, almost Balearic melodies of Nakes' thrillingly positive dubstep shuffler "Moksha".

Review: Twwth & Desto welcome brand new act Inner to the fold by way of this crystalline quartet of 23rd century trap constructions. Swaggering on the cosmic side, there's a touch of the moody Hudsons to the opening track "Pain" before the beats step up into more of grime energy and textures melt into a wavy sensation on "Crystal Ember". Dig deeper for the fractured, clipped and sense-blurring "Closa" before a final 135 hurrah on the RL Grime meets Nick Warren spatial star-gazer. Sweet dreams.

  1. Slimzee Vs As.If Kid - "Judgement Day" (4:16)
  2. As.If Kid - "Shooter" (DnB mix - DJ Garna remix) (10:01)
Review: Following their razor edge four-tracker earlier this summer Rinse co-founder and foundation grime pioneer Slimzee and new partner in crime As.If.Kid maintain the heat as they declare "Judgement Day" once and for all. Bell-chiming brutality with a rugged slo-mo jungle charm, there's almost a rock-like looseness to the drums and grunting bass as it rolls out with unique energy. Flip for a remix from fellow OG DJ Garna who reinforces As.If.Kid's "Shooter" with an authentic jungle rinse-out.

Review: Four spry blends of vibrant contemporary bass fusion from Potentz. Mixing up dubstep, grime, trap, wave and UKG, the flavours are strong throughout; "Summerjam" flutters with shimmering chimes and manipulated vocal textures, "Shadows" thugs it out over a wavey backdrop, "June 84" is a dream steam roller with swooping, Kareful-style arpeggios while "Starlight" takes the message back to the bedroom with a deep rolling groove and emotion dripping from the sultry synth lines.

Review: Finally relieved of its in-demand dubplate station, Jack Junior's anthem bassline bounce jam "Dungeon Dub" gets released on brand new label Comic Strip Klub. Riffy, infectious, playful - Jack's fusion of grime, garage and dubstep isn't new, but the way he mixes it up with so much energy, it certainly feels like its fresh. Complete with a VIP, a Zed Bias-style subby stepper "Death Machine" and the darker, trappy rolls of "Goro" with co-pilot Jigs, it's yet another on-point document. Don't pass this by.

Review: Making their debut on Warp, Hudson Mohawke and Lunice proudly cross their beams to rain down a sick and slick kind of future-crunk, aptly demonstrated in in the introductory nature of bass-rich teaser "Top Floor" with its juke leanings and menacing posture. There's a detuned nature to the recognisable bleeps and wails on offer here while the beats remain crunchy and steadfast. "Higher Ground" is more overt in its use of juke to create a twisted kind of hype, while "Bugg'n" drips and drops in a loping vat of sub bass and slow-mo strangeness, leaving you with one of the oddest takes on the contemporary mess of electronic beats.

Review: What a year it's been for Warp. So far in 2014, other than Aphex Twin's Syro, the label has released music from Squarepusher, Oneohtrix Point Never and Jackson & His Computer Band to Plaid, Nightmares On Wax and Rustie - with another album by Clark forthcoming. Now one of Glasgow's most colourful producers (check out the cover art), Hudson Mohawke returns to home base with his first official release since the Satin Panthers EP. As usual there's a kaleidoscope of sounds to be heard on Chimes alongside hip hop beats, footwork skitters and gangster 'woof' vocals, and if "Joy Fantastic" from Butter is a Hud Mo fav, then "King Kong Beaver" should fill you with hope that a follow up LP is on the way.

From the dense rifle choir hits of "Peace Upzzz" to the epic cinematica of "Atlantean Airship" by way of the stomping hedonism of "What U Mean", Rustie's smelting sensations sit somewhere between trance and trap, fairgrounds and the underground.. And sound all the better for being on vinyl.

Review: Although the vaguely mysterious Letherette duo may hail from Wolverhampton, their hearts seem to lie in sunnier climes on the basis of D&T, this 12" precursor to their forthcoming debut LP on Ninja Tune . The title track "D&T" is a gorgeous slice of shimmering synth-heavy Euro-disco, compressed and propelling, it's the sound of hurtling down the Cote d'Azur in vintage sportscar in 1986. Clark and Dorian Concept are smart choices to remix the track; the former delivers an equally killer slo-mo version, whilst his Austrian counterpart throws in some steel drums and rat-tat-tat-tat percussion in his mix. Non album cut "She Shines" rounds out the 12" with a slab of jazzy trip hop that will appeal greatly to long term Ninja Tune followers.

"Zim Zim Zim" features seasoned dancehall MC Burro Banton raining down vocal fire over a typically grandiose Martin production, all slow, heavy-footed stomp and strangely emotive slabs of grinding metallic synth tones that sound like the end of the world bursting out of the speakers. Banton's nagging delivery sits perfectly on the track, but for those that want to home in on the subtleties of the production the "Version" provides all the space you need for those staggering sounds to roam.

  1. Freakshow (feat Danny Brown & Kiki Hitomi)
  2. Louder (feat Flowdan)
  3. Dirty (feat Flowdan)
  4. Kill Them (feat Daddy Freddy)
Review: Dropping a searing double pack of 10" badness ahead of the forthcoming Angels & Devils album, The Bug is back in business with some apocalyptic gutter bass of the highest order. "Freakshow" matches the leering delivery of Danny Brown with the sinister croon of King Midas Sound's Kiki Hitomi over a horn-laden trap swagger to devastating effect. "Louder" pits Flowdan in the depths of a nauseating half-step march, while "Dirty" takes the London MC into a barrage of equally nerve-jangling drum rattles and alarm-clanging stabs. Long-time Bug collaborator Daddy Freddy rolls up his sleeves for "Kill Them", anchoring the dread stomp with a fearsome growl as anthemic as it is nihilistic.

Review: It's been some six years since renowned misery guys Kevin Martin won plaudits for London Zoo, a typically dark, intense and aggressive full-length that showcased his unique ability to blend dubstep, grime, dancehall and dub techno textures into nightmarish new shapes. Angels & Devils, his belated follow-up, is intriguingly different. While the second half of the set is blessed with plenty of robust, floor-friendly riddims (each blessed with vocals from a range of impressive collaborators), the first half is an altogether more downbeat affair. In fact, it's these moments - the droning, dub-inflected ambience of "Pandi" and the bluesy, soundscape dub-soul of "Save Me" - that hit home hardest.

  6. Blaow (feat Daddy Freddy)
Review: This EP finds Kevin Martin zooming in on some of the themes of Angels & Demons, the long awaited new LP from The Bug, naturally showing a diverse approach across the spectrum of his dread-filled half-step swagger. Two versions of "Void" drape themselves across the first side in a heavy-lidded fog of distant melodics, static interference and restrained beat business, while on the flip "Black Wasp" likewise takes two strung out routes through submerged menace and laconic grace. Like a sharp slap about the chops, side three finds Manga spitting out a monolithic grime performance over "Function", while Daddy Freddy is on side four with a perfectly devilish turn on "Blaow".

Review: Aside from having a stellar catalogue of releases that span from labels like Reflex to Hyperdub, Kevin Martin's The Bug project has been a foundational pillar of the UK dubstep and bass scene. if there has always been one producer to take things one step further and challenge the dance with each new tune, it's most certainly this producer. No wonder he's been releasing music on Ninja Tune for ages, and that he's back on the label now with this new EP. "Box" features revered grime MC D Double E on the mic, and the collaboration between the two results in utter carnage, a visceral grime banger backed by The Bug's twisted concoctions of beats and bass; check the instrumental, too. "Iceman" is a similar sort of curbside killer, this time with Riko Dan on the vocals, and followed by that gnarly instrumental cut...oof!

Review: Gilles Peterson's Brownswood label has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to forward-thinking music. Nowhere is this more evident than on the Brownswood Electric compilations, which swap organic, jazz-leaning grooves and global beats in favour of bass music rhythms and electronic sweeps. This second collection follows a similar format to its predecessor, offering up 14 impeccable tracks from a wide range of largely little-known producers. As you can imagine, highlights are plentiful, from the off-kilter liquid D&B of Frederic Robinson and Synkro & Indigo's deep future dubstep to the dewy-eyed wonk of DJ Dials and Starkey-ish Aeed.
