Cat: EM 006VO. Rel: 19 Apr 21
  1. Yi (6:57)
  2. Er (4:02)
  3. San (7:18)
Review: Shanghai-based label have been slipping out delicate, melodic electronics for a few years now, spreading their assembled roster's sound across tapes, 7"s and digital releases. This 12" from Knopha came out in 2018 and was gone shortly after, so it's high time a repress of this sumptuous new age synth dream got sorted. The vibe is distinctly 90s across Nothing Nil, revelling in FM synthesis and laid back atmospheres. Plush chords abound, and the beats fall in soft and sensual formations, even when a cheeky breakbeat slips into the slow-mo pulse of 'San'. A truly captivating 12" with the potential to create some real 'moments' at the right hour of the party.

Canto Club House 001 (hand-stamped 140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FAUVECC 001. Rel: 19 Apr 21
  1. Track 1 (MH edit) (4:33)
  2. Track 2 (MH edit) (5:17)
  3. Storm (RFX Acid rework) (6:27)
  4. Midnight Queen (RFX edit) (5:48)
Review: Fauve Records is tapping into the overlooked sound of 1980s Hong Kong and some of the razor-sharp Cantonese disco that was getting pumped out for the clubs. Following hot on the heels of the Extinct Melodies From The Tropical Moon EP, label founder Romain FX is back on board with MH delving back into the archives of seriously overlooked dance music that, thanks to their editing skills, transcends time in its sheer classiness. MH throws down a tough stomper that could sit comfortably alongside a Yello belter, and a sprightly electro funker for the boogie crowd. RFX veers towards vocodered acid disco shot through with Italo bombast and then seals the deal with some AOR electro-pop with enough punch to go ten rounds with Robert Palmer.

Emancipation
Emancipation (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SURM 02. Rel: 19 Apr 21
  1. Emancipation (7:06)
  2. Emancipation (Button dub) (7:14)
Review: Those of a certain vintage may remember Surreal Records, a subsidiary of early UK tech-house imprint Swag Records, run by Mike Parsons and Paul Stubbs. Recently the label sprung back into life in order to reissue some of its most potent and sought-after tracks. This number from the Mingers, AKA Parsons and Timmy Stuart, falls into that category. In its' original form (side A), 'Emancipation' is a fine example of turn-of-the-century tech-house/deep house fusion, where dreamy chords, weightless female vocal snippets, high-frequency acid motifs and meandering synth sounds ride a chunky bassline and techno-tempo, garage-influenced beat. Over on the flip you'll find the pair's 'Button Dub', a more stripped-back and bass-heavy affair that does a brilliant job in showcasing the cut's killer groove.

Alchemy
Alchemy (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MYS 010. Rel: 19 Apr 21
  1. Persian - "Worries In The Dance (Jonny Rock Slightly Tingled Worrior edit" (6:03)
  2. Vertigo Inc - "Numbers" (5:36)
  3. Asian Psilocybe Foundation - "Wave Control" (7:17)
  4. Afrobuddha - "Obame (Treat mix)" (6:38)
Review: The Mysticisms label is doing a bang up job creating a particular vibe on their label. Rather than sticking to a sound, they're pursuing an attitude, an energy. It's rugged and dirty, rooted in no-nonsense old-skool values - a bit cheeky but totally serious at the same time, built for the freaky DJs who like to go a bit off piste. This tenth installment kicks off with Persian's 'Worries In The Dance', shuffling hard on a ruff n' tuff house shuffle and edited with flair by Jonny Rock. Next up Vertigo Inc. presents a giddy rainforest of 8 bit bleeps and wonky synth flute, while Asian Psilocybe Foundation take things slinky and shimmering on the crisp 'Wave Control'. Afrobuddha takes things further out with a powerful African drum exaltation, all dense thickets of percussion and uplifting group singing.

Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know
Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: LIH 042. Rel: 19 Apr 21
  1. I Still Love You (10:23)
  2. I Said I Wasn't Gonna Fall In Love No More (6:26)
  3. If You Give Me Another Chance (6:29)
Review: Naarm / Melbourne's Prequel has slipped out a few records thus far, and they've landed in all the right places. Rhythm Section, Local Talk, Distant Hawaii - you can get a feel for the kind of house music he's representing. And yet, as he shores up on Lumberjacks In Hell, what's most apparent is how far out he's prepared to go in pursuit of that deep feeling. 'I Still Love You' is a sprawling, delirious and spaced out exploration that belongs amongst the truly idiosyncratic outliers of house music - your Pepe Bradocks and Theo Parrishes. 'I Said I Wasn't Gonna Fall In Love No More' has a tighter groove, but it's still executed with a dislocated, psychedelic finish which stands well apart from the crowd. 'If You Give Me Another Chance' finds Prequel coming at a grab bag of samples from a crooked angle, but with enough jack to keep the wheels from coming off. Inspired stuff.
