  1. Opelescot (9:02)
  2. Swim With The Tide (7:29)
  3. Stunt Bubble (6:59)
  4. Seasaw (7:29)
Review: Debutants 4D & Krunky create ravey and funked-up minimal techno, taking its cues from early Detroit techno and northern bleep styles. The grooves to be heard on the Humanoid label's are as cute as the label art: from the strobed-out shuffle 'n' roll of 'Oplescot', to the west coast breaks of 'Stunt Bubble' calling to mind the mid '90s sounds of Northern California, and the hyper aware boompty boomp of closer 'Seasaw'.

Starlight (12")

  1. Starlight (feat Tyesha Blount) (6:00)
  2. Matador Beach (instrumental) (3:27)
  3. Matador Beach (vocal mix) (2:47)
Review: Word on the street is that Alister is the next big thing to come out of the Motor City. The song writer and producer must be hotly tipped, frankly, because the one and only Omar S has taken him under his wing and recorded and mixed these two new tunes, which are tasters from his full length album to come in the spring. They bare all his hallmarks too - crunchy, dusty drums, rugged chord vamps and prickly perc. 'Starlight' is all that with an added vocal, while 'Matador Beach' is more trippy and nocturnal, with a delicate falsetto lost in pinball melodies and ricocheting hits.

  3. It's The Life (Kai Alce interpretation) (6:44)
  4. Is It The Music (6:06)
Review: Seriously authentic vibe son this one from Billy Lo, which is a trio of artists from Detroit's Motor City. Bill Beaver is a Sound Signature and Mahogany Music alumnus, Darren Abrams wrote the classic 'Loose Piano' on Third Ear Recordings and Darryl Tis is the third piece of the puzzle. This EP features a repress of 'Its The Life,' a forgotten classic from the D that first came in 2002 and now costs a small fortune on Discogs. As well as the original, NDATL's front man Kai Alce remixes and two additional jazzy tinged, deep house gems are also included on this gold standard EP.

  3. Finger-Snapped (4:22)
  4. Finger-Snapped (5:12)
Review: The always pleasingly leftfield French maverick Pepe Bradock has been busy of late. Now he returns with a third instalment of his on going Dactylonomy series and again breaks all the rules. Opener 'Major' is choppy house with knackered kciksand frazzled pads swirling round the groove. Next up is a more hunched over and heavy house kicker that is dark and filled with industrial texture. 'Finger-Snapped' is one of Bradock's most straight up house tunes for a while, and it bangs. The harmonies, garage-flecked drum work and wigged out synths all get you going, only for the closer to be a brilliantly raw stomper.

  2. Armec - "Celestial Mechanics" (5:24)
  3. Jared Wilson - "Leave Your World Behind" (GOM mix) (6:27)
  4. Gilbert - "Signs Of Hope" (6:15)
Review: We're Going Deep do it again on a nicely varied four tracker featuring talents old and new. Cignol's 'Late Night Traverse' is a brilliantly designed cut with a loopy lead melody phrase that is going nowhere in a hurry over a nice meandering bassline. Armec's 'Celestial Mechanics' is a tougher electro tinged beat with industrial textural references and then Jared Wilson does what he does best. Acidddddd. Gilbert rounds out with a thoughtful and pensive cut that will have you gazing off into the multi-verse as his ticking hits and elastic bass keep things moving.

2 Steppers Ltd (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: PPLTD 05. Rel: 26 Feb 21
  1. DJ Deller - "Nobody Does It Better" (5:42)
  2. Heritage - "Dial Up" (4:27)
Review: Plastik People bring some more garage heat to their Ltd sublabel with the outstanding double hit of DJ Deller and Heritage. Deller is in control on the A side with the rolling breakstep funk of 'Nobody Does It Better', maximising on a soulful male vocal, killer hats and a Lately bassline to die for. On the flip, Heritage is a rougher affair that breaks the beat up and goes in hard on the wobbly subs, keeping things sparse and deadly for a surefire club weapon. It's a perfect foil to the upfront soul vibes of the A side, making this an incredibly useful record to pack for two vastly different reasons.

Plyfe EP
Plyfe EP (hand-stamped 12" limited to 150 copies)

  1. Loopo (6:00)
  2. Plyfe (6:06)
  3. Raarup Jam (6:00)
  4. Vlob Tool (5:47)
Review: Eversines has enjoyed an interesting career to date, switching between intriguing electronica experiments (see his blissful collaboration with Carolina Eyck, the sumptuous Waves), and more rugged, intoxicating dancefloor workouts (a fine 12" on Kalahari Oyster Cult). This time round, the Amsterdam-based producer is in club-focused mode. He begins bu surrounding a rubbery breakbeat with broken modem electronics, twisted acid lines and deep bass on 'Loopo', before reaching for spacey pads and bubbly lead lines on sci-fi brekas special 'Plyfe'. B-side opener 'Raarup Jam' is hypnotic, odd and otherworldly in the best possible way, while 'Vlob Tool' is a bongo-laced trip into percussion-rich deep techno.

  5. Bilateral Dreams
Review: Berlin-based Aussie Jad & The (?) has changed musical direction, forgoing his former expressions in late night deep house for classic techno sounds inspired by the early '90s, as heard on his EP called Infinite Autonomy which inaugurates the Speed Dial imprint. The title track on the A side receives a rework by Priori which takes the track into evocative realms in its exploration of broken beat electronica, while over on the flip the swing-fuelled acid techno of 'Civil Servant Ain't Civil' is sure to get you tweaking, followed by the strobed-out techno of 'Bilateral Dreams' closing it out in tunnel vision style.

Piece Of Ballad EP
Cat: QUINTESSE 75. Rel: 26 Feb 21
  1. Has Gone (8:14)
  2. Ballad (7:39)
  3. Misty (6:48)
Review: Germany's Quintessential is as reliable as ant label out there when it comes to fad-free, timeless deep house. Their's is a grown up sound that is never in a hurry to impress, instead slowly sucking you into a heady groove and keeping you there. Jank's entry to the label's discography opens with the heavy, trudging kicks of 'Has Gone' before 'Ballad' brings a more light and airy, jazz-tinged melodic vibe. It's lo-fi, intimate and awash with smart samples. 'Misty' closes down with a more cosmic outlook, long legged kicks and scuffed dup bass to die for.

  1. Contact (6:21)
  2. Afterglow (5:30)
  3. Movement (4:52)
  4. Pulse (7:21)
Review: Leeds-based producer Kepler has been equally busy dishing out garage heat as 0113 in recent times, but he comes to Constant Sound with a supercharged tech house sound steeped in 90s punch. Just listen to the lately bass and tough beat driving 'Contact' and you'll know exactly what we mean. There's a melodic consistency that comes through on follow-up track 'Afterglow', but here the beats fall lighter and the synths get more space to sparkle. On the B side, 'Movement' reaches for the peak time once again, but with a gloriously melodic sensibility at its core, and then 'Pulse' rounds the EP off with another uptempo workout offset by illustrious lead lines and pads.

  5. Absolute Beginners (take 7) (2:37)
Review: It's nice to be hearing new more new material by Belgian minimal house expert Lawrence Le Doux, who resurfaced after a two year hiatus last year on Kalahari Oyster Cult. In what was one of this week's most welcomed releases, the Vlek records staple brings you his latest one courtesy of Rotterdam's Nous'klaer Audio titled Compassion Lake. The title track's lush ambience sets the tone for a series of chilled-out and introspective grooves, as heard on the smooth broken beat acid of 'Alta' or the clipped jitter-funk of '1010' on the flip, followed by the sombre afterhours dancefloor reflections of 'Tout.

  2. OmniMulti (4:06)
  3. Skylark (Linkwood remix) (9:27)
  4. Skylark (Tourist Kid remix) (4:38)
Review: Synth magician Lord of The Isles only deals in high quality sounds. They're always slow release, mindful cuts for dreamers and lovers of the deep and now he offers them up on the equally tasteful ESP Institute. 'Skylark' is rooted to a hunched kick but has expansive melodies way up in the skies above, and icy hi hat ticks keeping you locked in. 'OmniMulti' is more aural fireworks of the highest order, but paired to a deep, rubbery groove, and then Linkwood flips 'Skylark' into scuffed up and dreamy bit of late night bliss. Tourist Kid tackles the same tune and comes up with inventive, abstract ambient sounds with a new age edge.

  6. No Good For Me (5:12)
Review: After serving up a couple of rather good, compilation-style EPs, Mindhelmet has decided to give Noiro - a producer whose '11 Reasons To' was a highlight of the label's first release - the chance to strut his stuff across a slab of wax. The sometime Chat Noir contributor has duly delivered, confidently moving between punchy, retro-futurist goodness (synth bass-propelled opener 'Now You Know'); smooth and bass-heavy late night slickness ('Seasoning'); chiming early morning warmth ('United'); chunky deep house positivity ('Cottage', which fixes late 80s synth-pop sounds and dream house flourishes to a killer bassline); squelchy and spacey fare ('Jacques Pervert') and hard-to-categorize deep electrofunk ('No Good For Me').

  1. Omar S/Norm Talley - "Muggy Detroit Heat" (5:56)
  2. Norm Talley/Moodymann - "Jus Hangin" (feat Charlotte OC - mashed up by D'Julz) (7:21)
Review: There is a heavyweight selection of names on this first release from Norm Talley's promising new label Upstairs Asylum. Firstly, the man himself is a Motor City heavyweight who links with fellow luminary Omar S on the opener 'Muggy Detroit Heat.' It's an intense and steamy house track that bristles with raw melody. On the flip, French house icon D'Julz reworks a tune by Norm in cahoots with the one and only Moodymann. This one is all cuddly chords, romanic vocal chops and warm, rough edged house beats for those cosy basements.

Review: There is unbridled joy and musical richness in this spirit-raising new EP from Sound Support. As we've just learnt that summer 2021 is on, we're all imagining ourselves on outside dance floors, moving and grooving under a hot sun and through a balmy might, and these are the tracks we we want hear. 'Clavi on the Rocks' is all squelchy bass and cosmic keys over mid tempo beats, 'Thesaurus Rex' is grown up Balearic for those cocktail moments and 'Super Elevation' then heads into more nocturnal territory with its stiffer basslines and more acidic synths. 'Enduro' close sin playful and care free fashion.
