Review: DJ Koze's music is very much suited to the album format. Although his last effort through this medium was back in 2013, his explorative nature and wide-eyed, improvisational style are simply made to branch out into areas outside of the more predictable house and techno formats. Knock Knock comes through on his own Pampa label, with its seventeen tracks all providing us with something different and wonderful, from slo-mo r&b sounds to funky, wayward house music that is most certainly at the 'outside' of the house spectrum. There are plenty of special guests, too, including Mano Le Tough, Sophia Kennedy, and many other relevant talents. A Koze speciality.

Review: Given that it's been 14 years since French producer Hardrock Striker established the Skylax label, this retrospective catalogue mix-up has been a long time coming. Old friend DJ Sprinkles handles disc one, delivering a mix that brilliantly blends her uniquely dubby and spaced-out take on house music with dusty, soulful and largely U.S-centric deep house jams from the likes of Sameed, Lady Blaktronika, Chez Damier, Joey Kay and Carlos Nilmmns. On the second disc, Hardrock Striker focuses on more recent label material, whizzing through a swathe of tactile, deep and groovy retro-futurist cuts from the likes of Octa Octa, Niko Marks, Groove Riddim and Garage Shelter.

Review: Long Way Home is Fred Everything's 4th studio album, the first one on his own imprint, Lazy Days Recordings. The record is a welcome return to the LP format after 10 years and also to many musical genres he dabbled with in the past. Broken Beats and Electro co-habit flawlessly with Slower Disco and Deep House with an overall balearic/addriatic vibe, influenced by summers spent in Croatia and Mallorca. It features vocals by South Africa's Sio, Montreal's Franky Selector as well as previous collaborator Jinadu. It also features Hot Toddy from Crazy P on guitar and Live Strings. Watch out for remixes from Lauer, Andre Lodemann and Ian Pooley coming out soon.

Review: The career of the legendary and near mythical Spencer Kincy is celebrated on this extensive compilation, featuring some of his greatest hits. He released over 200 tracks over a prolific period between from the mid to late nineties, then as many of you may know by now, suddenly disappeared - at the peak of his career. Rumours have been bandied about, regarding what happened and his whereabouts now, but we're assured he is alive and well. As like other reissues on Anotherday, this compilation has been licensed directly from the man himself and royalties will go directly to him. From the tough bounce of "U know How I Feel" or the sensual lo-slung funk of "Imagine A Nation", the bulk of these tracks were originally released on local powerhouse Relief Records between 1994 - 1995 and are classic Kincy. Timeless stuff right here from the annals of Chicago house history.

Review: Given the hype surrounding HNNY over the last few years - fuelled, primarily, by a string of celebrated singles on Puss, Local Talk, Let's Play House and YUMMY - it's somewhat surprising that Sunday marks his first foray into the album market. Wisely, the Swedish artist embraced the opportunity for eclecticism that the format provides, filling his debut full-length with a mix of tracks variously designed for sofa-bound listening and dancing in clubs. There's a jazz-flecked beauty to the crackly downtempo grooves offered up by the title track, while the dreamy, guitar-laced head-nodder "Sylvia" recalls the best of his Balearic-influenced work. It's these luscious moments, such as the twinkling ambience of closer "My Baby", that really resonate.

Review: For an all too brief period between 1991 and 1994, Jovonn's Brooklyn-based Goldtones imprint was a shining light for a particularly positive brand of underground US house. Musically expansive but focused on the dancefloor, many of the label's releases occupied the middle ground between Nu Groove style New York deep house (think Bobby Konders and the Burrell Brothers, in particular) and the kind of shuffling, organ and synth vibraphone-laden material popular with acolytes of New Jersey legend Tony Humphries. This surprise retrospective on Clone Classic Cuts showcases many of Jovonn's productions for the imprint, joining the dots between the supple grooves and heady melodies of "Flutes (185th Street Mix)", and the intense percussion and tribal yelps of "Back To House (Jovonn's Classic Goldhouse Mix)".

Review: On his three previous albums (two for PNN and one for Bristol's Idle Hands), Matt Karmil showcased his seemingly innate ability to craft seriously atmospheric, slow-burn masterpieces out of manipulated and processed samples. He's at it again on Will, his first long-player for two years, except this time he'd raised the quality threshold even higher. The set was reportedly partly inspired by Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project, and you can hear that in the crackling drowsiness and reliance on barely recognizable, textural samples throughout. It's perhaps a little more indebted to Karmil's own love of ultra-deep house and hypnotic techno than Voigt's work, but it certainly inhabits a similar sonic space.

  7. Ahzz - "New York's Movin" (instrumental) (7:56)
  8. Bill Deal - "Freak N Freeze" (4:12)
Review: Dekmantel's new Selectors compilation series and festival was apparently designed to celebrate those DJs who not only know how to work a dancefloor, but also dig deep for inspiration. First to showcase his dusty-fingered credentials is Danilo 'MCDE' Plessow, who's used the opportunity to gather together some of his favourite, hard-to-find house, disco and jazz-funk cuts. There's naturally much to admire, from the breezy soulfulness of Dj Slym Fas's 1997 gem "Luv Music" and Risque III's early Chicago deep house killer "Essence Of A Dream", to the ludicrously expensive jazz-funk-meets-disco-boogie brilliance of Licky's 1979 obscurity "African Rock". It's a cliche to describe a compilation as containing "all killers" and "no fillers", but in this instance it's an accurate assessment.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** David 'Move D' Moufang's debut album, originally released in 1995, gets a much needed reissue here on Damiano von Erckert's ava imprint. Across the Kunststoff LP's dozen or so tracks, we can hear the zeitgeist of mid nineties electronics taking in obvious influences - mainly from Detroit and Sheffield but undeniably laying down the roots of what would soon become the signature of the Heidelberg producer's signature sound. From the blissed-out ambient house of "Soap Bubbles" (which would be further explored again a decade and a half later on Song From The Beehive with Benjamin Brunn), or "Amazing Discoveries" exploring the same sonic territory as the likes of John Beltran at the time. The bittersweet melancholia of "Tribute To Mr Fingers" which does exactly what it says on the tin, but its really about the many moments tripped-out deep electronica like the sublime "77 Sunset Strip" where the album really shines.

Review: Recently Planet E founder Carl Craig joined forces with Studio K7 to launch Detroit Love, a new label that takes its name from the techno veteran's touring party. To kick things off, Craig asked Motor City veteran Stacey Pullen to lay down a mix that encapsulated the Detroit spirit. In practice, that means a Michigan-heavy tracklist, with rolling, futurist techno, deep house and tech-tinged house cuts from the likes of Craig Sherrad, Delano Smith, Burning Bridges, Patrice Scott and Gary Martin being joined by similarly-minded cuts from international artists (see Soulphiction's fine opening track and Marcellus Pittman's legendary remix of Motor City Drum Ensemble's "Raw Cuts"). Pullen plays around with tempo and intensity throughout, but it's the inherent rawness and sci-fi feel of Detroit music that shines through.

Review: Qnete presents Play-Doh Stories on Ron Wilson's 777, following up some great releases on his own Drowned Records, Benjamin Brunn's Wake Up and Lobster Theremin. Some of the tracks are already three years old according to the now Leipzig based producer, admitting that he feels he's become somewhat of a different person since then. Nonetheless, he found himself coming back to these recordings, allowing him to reflect on how far he's come with his production and with a real sense of pride. From moments of raw and jackin' lo-fi attitude, dusty boompty deepness and ambient house through to slo-mo boogie down business and even a bit of drum 'n' bass - the boy from Bremen has sure come a long way.

While they've not put out anything on the Swedish imprint since 2012, they were responsible for the much admired label's second ever release way back in 2010. Given this history, it's perhaps unsurprising that their amusingly titled debut album, Steal Chickens From Men and the Future From God, sounds a little like a CD-length distillation of all that makes Studio Barnhus such an exciting label. Quirky and eccentric from start to finish, it features cut-up MPC loop jams nestling side by side with woozy, deep disco-house shufflers, skewed homemade reggae riddims, glassy-eyed ambient and sample-heavy Balearic house workouts. It's the sort of album that won't just make you tap your toes, nod your head and wiggle your hips, but also put a goofy smile on your face.

Review: The freshly minted Rhythm From label emerged from a deliciously simple concept: to put out compilations that shine a light on the music-makers and electronic club scenes in different cities around the world. This debut release focuses on the fast-rising scene in Toulouse, one of France's most vibrant dance music hotspots, and showcases seven cuts from mostly unknown producers. The quality threshold remains admirably high throughout, from the glassy-eyed Balearic piano house brilliance of Le Grand Ed and LDM's "Ascenseur Royal" and filter-fired summer disco-house breeziness of Peter Palace's "Tokyo Dreams", to the stabbing riffs, crunchy drum machine percussion and bluesy vocal samples of Mangabey's "Epithete". If you like your deep house seriously woozy and atmospheric, make sure you check out Twice Movement's impeccable closer, "Toulouse Express".

  6. Migori Superstars - "Anyango Maggy" (Africaine 808 edit) (4:52)
Review: Back in the late 1960s, underground magazine Source helped increase interest in avant-garde music by bundling together a record and an arty, printed publication. Some 50 years on, Swiss project FLEE is attempting something similar. They say that each edition will combine a long-playing record exploring a specific musical genre or movement with a beautifully presented, screen-printed "journal" containing essays from experts in the field. Issue one focuses on Kenyan Benga music. On one side of the record you'll find a trio of classic cuts from pioneers of the style. A trio of contemporary producers offers modern interpretations on the flip, with Africaine 808's killer re-edit of "Aryango Maggy" by Migori Superstars standing out. Brilliant stuff, all told.

  7. TVA - "Crackled Crossed Lines" (4:16)
  8. Telephones - "Pok-A-Tok" (Sundown mix) (6:03)
Review: Dynamo Dreesen's ACIDO imprint could not be functional without these sporadic mini-compilations from his co-workers and compatriots. The Berlin imprint, still waving the flag up high in the name of GOOD electronic music, returns with the third helping of My House Is Not Your House, a series showcasing the imprint's well-known talents and less established new entries, in what is always an indirect 'house' coating. PG Sounds kicks off with an intricate percussion pattern called "Acid", while newcomer TVA slaps down a fine drum groove surrounded by all sorts of quirky melodies, and there are plenty more deviations from the likes of Chance Encounter, Roadworker, or Arrrgh. Even Dreesen himself appears, alongside port Sword Tobacco, along with Fett-Burger's Telephones moniker. Unmissable, as per usual.

Review: You have to admire Leon Vynehall's ambition. Although he built his career by delivering atmospheric, otherworldly club music, his first set for Ninja Tune is a sprawling, largely ambient - or at the very least hazy and horizontal - concept album inspired by the story of his parents emigrating to New York. Thus, the ten tracks that make up the album - crafted from a combination of field recordings, sound effects, orchestral instrumentation recorded at Konk's studio in New York and his own sublime electronics - were produced and sequenced to tell a story. It's epic stuff, all told, but crucially also incredibly good. It proves, without any shadow of a doubt, that Vynehall is a producer with talent to match his widescreen vision.

Review: ** REPRESS ** Martyn's 3024 label returns with an extensive collection of works from rising UK house man Leon Vynehall. Originally debuting on Well Rounded Records' Housing Project sub-label back in 2012 with the Mauve 12", Vynehall has since become one of the UK's most in-demand of the new wave of young house producers, releasing subsequent records for George Fitzgerald's ManMakeMusic and Will Saul's Aus as well as collaborating with blog house survivor A1 Bassline under the Laszlo Dancehall alias. Having debuted on 3024 with last year's Open platter, Vynehall is back with Music For The Uninvited, a seven-track collection of tracks supposedly inspired by rides to school in his mother's car as a child in which he would listen to "mixed hip-hop, funk & electro tapes, Janet Jackson albums, Style Council and Stiff Little Fingers". Whilst there is plenty of the individual house sound Vynehall has developed on offer here ("It's Just (House Of Dupree)" is a certified jam) there are also more tranquil moments to bask in such as "Inside The Deku Tree" and "St Sinclair" which bookend this excellent release.

Review: Kamaal Williams has described The Return, his debut solo album, as "a natural evolution from the Yussef Kamaal project". Yet while that was made in collaboration with drummer Yussef Kamaal and played around with jazz in its myriad forms, The Return sees the man sometimes known as Henry Wu stamp his own mark on proceedings. So while "visionary jazz" (as the press release puts it) is his aim, this manifests itself in a range of ways. Contrast, for example, the leisurely jazz-funk flex and stoned feel of opener "Salaam" with the more groove-driven, dancefloor vibes of "High Roller", where sinewy strings tumble down over hip-hop influenced live house beats, meandering Herbie Hancock style synths and a superb bassline.

Review: The London-based CHURCH imprint is often too underappreciated and too overlooked given how much wonderful music it has put out since its first releases began to appear about 6 years ago and, most importantly, it is often overlooked in terms of diversity. Unlike popular opinion, they do not simply release house or tech for the floor and, if this new LP from debutant Yadava is anything to go by, they have mastered the art of eloquence and experimentation. It Rains Here is a beautiful LP, balancing its moody tones between trip-hop, balearic, and something not quite definable. Whatever the weather, this is a great source of good vibes, both on and off the dancefloor; it's funk music for the next decade, from the heart of London's streets. Check it and cop it! Warmly recommended.

Review: Having served as a reliable source of heads down deep house, deep techno and other such electronic gems for a long time now, Michael Zucker finally steps up to Finale Sessions with his debut album, and it was worth the wait. He frames it as presenting his life story across eight tracks, leading in with the elegant, heads-down tech house roll of "40 Days" and the immersive ambience of downtempo jam "Choosing Sides." There are diversions into broken beat on "Tokyo Sunrise" and rawer drum sounds powering "Divine Power," but the vibe is consistent across the LP. Melodic, mellow machine soul positively pours out of this one.
