Review: If you dig deep house - hell, electronic music full stop - then you should be rather excited by the arrival of Cerebral Hemispheres, the first Mr Fingers album for 26 years, and the first of any kind by the producer behind the alias, Larry Heard, since 2003. As you'd expect, the album is exceptionally good, with Heard's famous musicality and fluid keys-work coming to the fore throughout. While rooted in melodious, huggable deep house, Heard naturally uses the opportunity to veer off in the myriad of different directions, touching on jazz, dub, downtempo grooves, soul, samba, tech-soul, deep acid house and much more besides. It has the feel of a genuine future classic and could well be his strongest album to date. Given his track record, that's a bold claim, but Cerebral Hemispheres really is that good.

Review: Some four years and umpteen EPs have passed since Nachtbraker made his debut on Detroit Swindle's Heist Recordings label. This debut album, then, is arguably long overdue. "When You Find A Stranger In The Alps" is an exceptionally strong collection of cuts, with the Dutch producer effortlessly flitting between ambient interludes, head-nodding downtempo beats and the floor-friendly fare he's renowned for delivering. There's much eclecticism within that latter category, too. There are plenty of melodic deep house floor-fillers, of course ("Flambo", "Randy"), but you'll also hear reggae-tinged club tracks ("NSFW"), bouncy techno ("You Can't Run"), soul and disco-inspired mid-tempo shufflers ("The Dream Sequence", "Just Doing My Thang") and funk rock smashers ("Aliens"). In other words, it ticks a lot of boxes whilst remaining enjoyable and entertaining throughout.

Review: Before sometime Wild Bunch member Milo Johnson became DJ Nature, he produced under the Nature Boy alias. Amongst the gaggle of largely overlooked releases was a fine album entitled Ruff Disco Volume 1. Here the 1992 set gets a deserved reissue, with Johnson tweaking tracks here and there (most notably the superb deep house of "Prayer"). It's a fine collection full of playable material, which largely combines nods to U.S and European house trends of the time with occasional audio references to the bass-heavy sounds of the city in which he made his name, Bristol. If you're looking for highlights, check the dubbed-out reggae vocals, heavy bass and bongo hits of "Unda Me", the percussive disco-house dub of "Tobago" and the 4am pump of "The Major Enemy".

Review: During its lifespan, sadly departed London club Plastic People had it all: an intimate space to dance, an astonishingly good audiophile sound system, and a crew of resident DJs that included the mighty Theo Parrish. The Detroiter's sets there, which ran for a minimum of six hours, have naturally become the stuff of legend. Three years after the club closed, Parrish has decided to release the recording of his final set there - a thrillingly free-wheeling, three-disc voyage that dizzily and gleefully joins the dots between jazz, soul, disco, funk, deep house, acid, techno and much more besides. The three discs capture Parrish at his most lively and esoteric, providing a musical journey that will delight dancers and armchair listeners alike.

Review: Australian group Retiree: the musical project of Matt Crowley, Tori Holleman and Marco Vella return to Rhythm Section with a new record. The album's songs explore the theme of 'house or home' and what that means in present day Australia for different people. They journey from an aboriginal tent embassy on the south coast of New South Wales, a retirement village, a one room flat in the suburbs of Melbourne and a sleepless 17 hour stop over in Malaysia. From the slo-mo neon-lit pop of "Migrate", the catchy '80s revivalism of "Pumice Stone" or "Line In The Dirt" and even moments of balearic deep house like "Mystery Bay" - Retiree present a cohesive effort here. Definitely ones to keep your eye on in 2018 and beyond.

Review: For almost a decade from the mid 1980s onwards, Hamburg's Front Club was one of Germany's leading bastions of underground merriment. Although its roots were as a gay club for a discerning crowd that demanded better than the commercial fare that was on offer elsewhere, it went on to become a haven for underground dance music enthusiasts of all sexual persuasions. Here, resident DJs Klaus Stockhausen and Boris Dlugosch serve up a two-disc taste of life on Front's dancefloor, giddily joining the dots between experimental European synth-pop, Italo-disco, New York proto-house, early Chicago jack-tracks, electro-funk, Bobby 'O' Orlando style Fairlight-driven high-energy stompers, Detroit techno and much more besides. As you'd expect, it's a sweaty, celebratory and thrill-a-minute ride.

Review: Hamburg's Front club was a fixture of Germany's underground club scene throughout the '80s and early '90s, with resident DJs Klaus Stockhausen and later Boris Dlugosch championing house music (amongst other things) long before it was fashionable to do so. It certainly made an impression on Gerd Janson, who asked Stockhausen and Dlugosch to put together a celebratory retrospective of Front favourites. This second part (of two) contains some real gems, from Dlugosch's edit of Toyin Agbetu's Dream 2 Science influenced deep shuffler "After The Storm" and the Bobby 'O' style '84 sleaze of Mark Imperial's "J'Adore Danser", to the mid-'80s NYC house flavours of CT Satin's "I Found A Friend (Underworld version)" and the Italian dream house colours of inspired early Fila Brazillia single "Mermaids".

Review: Earlier in the year, Stefan "SW" Wust joined forces with like-minded audio sergeant SVN for a brilliant EP of ambient techno and sludgy breakbeat revivalism on Apollo. Here, he goes solo once more, returning to SUED with his first album-length excursion since 2016. As usual, he doesn't get bogged down with anything as trivial as track titles, instead serving up a fuzzy sound soup of untitled cuts that veer from Scanner style ambient fuzziness (A1), blazed tribal techno (A2) and to trippy, "ISDN"-era Future Sound of London electronic weirdness (A3), to deep and woozy IDM (B1), futurist ambient techno (B2) and far-sighted, Pete Namlook style beat-free bliss (B3).

Review: It's all change on the 14th edition of Compost's long-running Future Sounds of Jazz series, with the baton being passed to two new curators: Permanent Vacation bosses Benjamin Frolich and Tom Bioly. It was perhaps a wise move, because the duo - compiling a side each - have taken a much more liberal approach to "jazz" as a concept. The result is a hugely entertaining two-disc trawl that variously takes in immaculate deep house (Isolee, Marcellus Pittman), inspired electronica (The Abstract Eye), acid-flecked jazz-funk/house fusion (Tee Mango), hypnotic techno and spacey tech-house (Matt O'Brien, Aubrey, Herzel), synth-Balearica (Jex Opolis, I:Cube remixing Jose Padilla), ambient (Move D, Luke Abbot) and, of course, proper contemporary jazz (Yusuf Kamaal, Roman Flugel).

Review: Subversive disco Swedes Studio Barnhus curate and compile the compilations of their lives right here as the label arm of their operations celebrates its breadth and vibrancy with this 19 track, triple vinyl compendium of every groove that glitters... Left sided pop (Man Tear "Night Fantastic"), 21st century blues (Baba Stillz "LOVE"), dusty lofi warehouse rattlers (Qaadir Howard's "Bloodied & A Mess"), trippy seaside love songs (DJ Koze "Hawaiian Souldier") dreamy pastoral strums (Superpitcher's "La La La Land") and slinky dubby acid (Axel Boman's dub of Adrian Lux's "Teenage Crime") are just some of the charming, freeform and high spirited styles and shades on offer here. Pure bliss.

  8. Loz Goddard - "Leaves" (6:20)
Review: To celebrate a decade in the deep house game, Quintessentials has put together an eight-track set of unheard exclusives stretched across two DJ-friendly slabs of wax. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the sun-bright swing of Borrowed Identity's UK garage-meets-deep house workout "For You" and the wonderfully atmospheric, synth-heavy chug of Ooft!'s "Freak-E Groove", to the foreboding, jazz-funk-sampling hustle of S3A's "Searching" and lilting, late night jazz-house bliss of Loz Goddard's album highlight "Leaves". Other highlights include the drowsy chords and bumpin' beats of KRL's "Baltimore" and the low-slung, gospel-influenced deep house pump of 4004's "Continuous Dialogue".

Review: It's all change on the 14th edition of Compost's long-running Future Sounds of Jazz series, with the baton being passed to two new curators: Permanent Vacation bosses Benjamin Frolich and Tom Bioly. It was perhaps a wise move, because the duo - compiling a disc each - have taken a much more liberal approach to "jazz" as a concept. The result is a hugely entertaining two-disc trawl that variously takes in immaculate deep house (Isolee, Marcellus Pittman), inspired electronica (The Abstract Eye), acid-flecked jazz-funk/house fusion (Tee Mango), hypnotic techno and spacey tech-house (Matt O'Brien, Aubrey, Herzel), synth-Balearica (Jex Opolis, I:Cube remixing Jose Padilla), ambient (Move D, Luke Abbot) and, of course, proper contemporary jazz (Yusuf Kamaal, Roman Flugel).

Review: Given the runaway success of Marcel Vogel's Lumberjacks In Hell label in recent times, it was almost inevitable that a bigger imprint would come knocking sooner rather than later. Fittingly, that label was BBE, who asked him to put together a set of previously unreleased tracks that draws on the same classic palette of influences (think soul-fired house, disco, boogie, jazz-funk and shimmering, synth-laden beat-scapes). The resultant set is superb, with Vogel serving up both mixed (CD1) and unmixed variations. Highlights are plentiful - from the wayward, proto-house/gospel fusion of Tom Noble's "Lord I'm Trying" and the slick, soul-flecked deep house of Jonna's "Everyday", to the deep dancefloor jazz of Boogie Nite's "Jazz-o-nova (ooh)", the low-down funk of Beam Me Up and the spiraling disco-funk of Reece Johnson.
