Tusk Wax Twenty Seven (feat Zombies In Miami remix) (hand-stamped numbered 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TW 27. Rel: 23 Jul 18
  1. Mubai Garden Tea
  2. Arizona Dream
  3. Mubai Garden Tea (Zombies In Miami remix)
  4. Manchester's Teen
  5. Near To Bali
Review: Milanese pair Francesco Mingrino and Marcello Carozzi have already asserted themselves in the field of adventurous disco experimentation via two sterling outings on the highly rated Bordello A Parigi, and now they prove their calibre once again with an EP on the ever-vital Tusk Wax. There's a delicate tone to Younger Than Me on this record, from the heartstring tugging melodics of easy rolling acid throbber "Mubai Garden Tea" to the subtle synth pop touches of "Arizona Dream." "Manchester's Teen" is a tougher affair with the kind of slow filter sweeping lead hook that rave dreams are made of, while "Near To Bali" finishes the EP on an ominous beatless note. Zombies In Miami turn in a remix of "Mubai Garden Tea" that maintains the romantic mood of the original while injecting a little more dancefloor heat into its bones.

  1. Verge Dub (4:32)
  2. Arklight Dub (6:36)
  3. Hannah's Theme (Bliss version) (9:17)
Review: Z Lovecraft (AKA Rhythm Section International family member Mali Baden-Powell) made his debut last year via an EP on No Bad Days that cheerfully joined the dots between acid, deep house, hip-hop and early hardcore style breakbeats. There's a far mellower feel to this three-track outing on Guru Meditation, even if breezy opener "Verge Dub" does underpin jammed-out electric piano chords and dreamy electronics with shuffling breakbeats and a bustling sub-bass motif. "Arklight Dub" joins the dots between dub techno and spacey deep house, while nine-minute B-side "Hannah's Theme (Bliss Version)" is the kind of fluid, exceptionally picturesque shuffler that could have come from the studio of one of Italy's leading dream house crews during the ambient house era.

Za Talent (12")
Cat: ANIMALS 005. Rel: 20 Jun 18
  1. Telex (5:40)
  2. The Whale (6:57)
Review: Za Talent is a fresh alias from regular collaborators Jonny Nash and Suzanne Kraft. While their previous outings were unashamedly ambient and horizontal in nature, this 12" for Animals Dancing is deliciously dancefloor-focused - even if there trademark rich chords and glassy-eyed electronics do feature prominently. On the A you'll find "Telex", a quirky chunk of laidback electro smothered in fax machine electronics, bubbly melodies and punchy drum machine hits. Flip for "The Whale", where intergalactic police sirens weave in and out of spacey electro motifs, gently pulsing electronics and a rhythm track that can't decide whether it's broken, jazzy or just plain weird. It is, though, really rather good.

Review: One of the deepest reaching projects from the multifaceted Vibraphone stable resurfaces for an extended trip through ambient sonics that marks possibly the most daring departure on the esteemed Italian label to date. The harmonious tones undulating throughout Sketches From Space are instant soothers, taking the odd cue from techno but defiantly beatless and meditative. It's a surprising addition to the long and winding Vibraphone story, but also feels like one of the strongest steps forward the resurgent label has taken since returning to the fray. Just try sinking into "Lagrangian Point L4" and you'll see exactly what we mean.

Review: The enigmatic Dutchman Darling steps up with his debut album (under this alias at least) Every bit as dreamy and delicate and touching as his previous singles on Young Marco's Safe Trip have been, Tulipa Moves is a somnambulant ride deep into the hearts of the mysterious artist's vintage synth collection. Sitting somewhere between Brothomstates and Legowelt, all instrumental, Darling weaves a rich analog tapestry that draws you in and refuses to let you go. Highlights include the church-like cascades of "The M Song", the body shifting rolling technoid saviour faire of "Pillow People" and the warm freeform electro adventures of "Free Hand". Get moving...

Review: Eccentric Swedish sitcom enthusiast turned producer DJ Seinfeld is hot property right now, so it's hardly a surprise to see him mixing the latest instalment in the DJ Kicks series. It's rather good, all told, offering a good run through of his influences and inspirations whilst also packing plenty of dancefloor punch. Taken in isolation, the Swede's on-point selections (think breakbeat-driven lo-fi house, dreamy deep house, skewed techno and bubbly post-IDM jams) are often deep, melodious, atmospheric and left-of-centre; brought together, the result is a wonderfully fluid and entertaining mix. Highlights include the downtempo bliss of the producer's own "I See U", the bass-heavy breaks/deep house fusion of Rudolf C's "Deep Sea Survivor", the rushing dancefloor mania of FaltyDL and the loved-up goodness of Project Pablo.

Review: Prolific and long-serving Canadian producer Fred Everything is never one to rest on his laurels, but it's been no less than 10 years since he last released an album (the classic Lost Together on Om Records). Now he finally returns to the long player format on his own Lazy Days label with the appropriately titled Long Way Home, a widescreen exploration of his sound via all manner of styles. There's gorgeous broken beat and neo soul, slow-strutting electronic disco and modern boogie, and that's just the A side of this expansive 12-track album. Warm, immaculately produced and unafraid of embracing pop as much as underground styles, it's a masterful return from Mr. Everything.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** On Francis Harris' second album, the Scissor and Thread label founder continued to grapple with the subjects of memory, loss and profound grief similarly explored on his debut Leland (dedicated to his recently passed father) in 2012. This follow up was in tribute to his mother, who sadly passed the following year - with Harris revisiting deeply personal territory. Danish vocalist Gry Bagoien, trumpeter Greg Paulus (of No Regular Play) and cellist Emil Abramyan returned to provide truly inspiring passages throughout this album. Harris even contributed to the sessions himself, with some guitar and piano work. Across the 10 song opus, Harris works organic and synthetic elements into his compositional framework, relying less on percussive elements to define his moods, whilst solidifying his signature blend of house, modern classical, shoegaze and noise.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Back in 2012, New York deep house hero Francis Harris released his critically acclaimed debut album on Scissor & Thread - the now defunct label he ran with French DJ Anthony Collins and Shawn Schwartz of Halcyon Records. A much sought after LP since its limited release, the reissue of this evocative sonic journey will no doubt be to the joy of many collectors with this repress. A requiem to his late father, it is a deeply personal journey with an organic and soulful feel throughout featuring a variety of traditional and classical sonic elements over its deep house framework. From blissed out armchair drifters like "Plays I Play" or "Pensum", to more upbeat expressions in deepness as heard on the gorgeous "Lostfound" featuring Danish singer Gry's sensual vocals or the bittersweet groove of "Close Air". This truly is Harris' masterpiece.

Review: Theo Kottis becomes the latest rising star of club culture to contribute a mix to Global Underground's legendary Nubreed series, which previously helped turn the likes of Lee Burridge, Sander Kleinenberg and Steve Lawler into household names. The Scottish DJ/producer has naturally grasped the opportunity with both hands, delivering a deep, melodious and atmospheric two-disc mix-up that boasts a seriously impressive track list. The first disc begins with some fine ambient from Gigi Masin, before Kottis drags us in a variety of deep house and deep techno directions via tracks by Henrik Schwarz, Sascha Funke and KiNK. Disc two sticks more rigidly to the more techno side of Kottis' sound, delivering head-spinning hypnotism and gently unfurling grooves.

Review: Dutch producer Larry De Kat is finally back for the first time this year with a new clutch of off-kilter house treatments for the playful DJ to delight in. After the cat-tastic intro, "Moving Fingaz" lays out some choice keys and dusty, shuffling drums, while "7DJ" places everything on an impeccable shuffling minimal house beat. There's some offbeat disco reductions at work on "Insecure," and "Trapped" slows things down to a half step stagger for dubwise heads and boogie cruisers to get loose to. Whatever your persuasion, there's something for everyone on this rich and varied 12".

Review: On this second album from his Ancient Moons project, Damian Lazarus has decided to switch focus. Whereas the outfit's debut album, Message From The Other World, combined global music influences with Lazarus's usual tech-house rhythms and a touch of psychedelia, Heart of Sky is much more heavily influenced by the Crosstown Rebels' chief's rarely discussed soul boy roots. Of course, the beats and basslines still largely stick to the powder house script, it's just that this time they come accompanied by starry-eyed soul vocals, 1960s dream pop influences, bold piano flourishes, gospel choruses and, on rare occasions, smoky trip-hop aesthetics. As a result, it's undoubtedly a much more "human" album, and one with far more crossover potential than its predecessor.

Review: Astonishingly, it's been 21 years since half Japanese New Zealander Mark De Clive-Lowe dropped his first release. Mark remains a hugely talented musician, producer and beat-maker capable of creating thrillingly soulful and off-kilter cuts. We're particularly enjoying the sumptuous summer sunshine of De Clive-Lowe's rich and groovy revision of Nils Wulker and Jill Scott's impeccable "Worth The Wait", the bass-heavy, organ-sporting swing of his take on King's "Supernatural", and the synth-heavy, broken beat-goes-deep house quality of the jazz-funk-influenced Amanda Melome rework. Best of all, though, is the Kiwi don's weighty, peak-time revision of Cherie Mathieson's "Games We Play".

Review: Sebastian Genz's third full length this time around is surprisingly not released via Hamburg's Smallville (an imprint he's a known staple of) nor his own Closer Music - rather, it's for London deep house merchants Wolf Music. The Yesterday's Tomorrow LP is said to see the Berlin based artist go back to his roots, revisiting his early influences such as hip-hop and jungle, mixed with the sample driven house he's become renowned for. Deep and dusty late-night emotions await you on "Daysdays" and "In Our Lifetime", a soulful/jazzy kinda something on "Maybe Tomorrow", the liquid drum & bass of "Move On" (which calls to mind the mid-'90s glory days when Alex Reece and Peshay reigned supreme) or the blunted urban blues of "949494". it's a compelling listen from start to finish.

Review: Celebrating 30 year of the infamous acid house explosion that was the Second Summer Of Love, three of the most influential selectors of the foundation era dig deep and deliver some of the most iconic, cherished and influential tunes that transcended the warehouses of New York, the clubs and fields of the UK and the beaches and terraces of Ibiza. The true Balearic acid house melting pot, Paul Oakenfold, Nancy Noise and Colin Hudd remind us just how timeless and important records such as 'Thunder', 'Chime' 'Such A Good Feeling', 'Pacific State' and so many more truly are. 30 years deep and still future; this is the start of a movement.

Review: If you're unfamiliar with the Ratgrave name, you're not alone: this this bustling, future funk LP marks the first time collaborators Max Graef and Julius Conrad have released anything under the alias. The set was apparently recorded at different times, and in different places, over a three-year period. Musically, it draws much inspiration from intergalactic jazz-funk, P-funk and otherworldly '80s boogie, but also feels instinctively loose, carefree and improvised. The result is a set of lo-fi cuts that sound like they were recorded straight to tape during improvisational jam sessions, but were probably far more polished and thought-out than you might expect. Either way, it's the kind of LP that gets better with each successive listen.

Review: Lo-fi house hero Ross From Friends presents his debut album for Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder imprint - this follows up the terrific Aphelion EP he presented on the label earlier this year. Like the title suggests, Family Portrait refers to a very specific personal aspect of Felix Weatherall's life: the influence of his parents. Dance music was always around during his childhood, where he grew up learning about music from his dad - who apparently had a penchant for banging out hi-NRG tracks on the decks. It's a riveting listen from start to finish: from the the intensely vivid groove of "Pale Blue Dot" to the moody "Project Cybersyn" with its tunnelling aesthetic - perfectly geared for those heads-down moments later in the night.

Review: Paris label Ville Nouvelle is a music-sharing project, which aims to propose a journey into contemporary music. It delivers some exceptional music on Music For Five Post Cards, which like the name suggests serves up five evocative love letters from across the globe. Our favourite sonic narratives here came from Vancouver's Regularfantasy (Heart To Heart/Pacific Rhythm) who delivers the dreamy lo-slung bliss of "Queen" (962 Cardero mix 1.6), Melbourne's Soda Lite who provides some celestial and soothing FM tones on the new age journey "Liffey Falls" and Germany's Jose Roboter gets into some loved-up and balearic tinged vibes reminiscent of the acid house era on "Imaginary Scenes".

Review: There was much excitement when Pink Eye, Maurice Fulton's first album under the Syclops album for five years, first appeared online last month. In typical fashion, Fulton hadn't let anyone know it was coming. As with some of his other projects, it's now available on physical formats via German titans Running Back. As with previous Syclops albums, it's wonderfully bonkers and hard to pigeonhole, with the Sheffield-based Chicagoan combining mind-altering electronics, skewed drums, riotous analogue grooves and cheery piano and synthesizer motifs in a variety of hugely impressive ways. There are naturally some suitably filthy club workouts present - check the intergalactic madness of "Sarah's E Is Back", the druggy, afro-tech romp that is "Spin Cycle" and the sub-heavy insanity of "Kelly Is On Her C" - alongside loved-up compositions and productions that indulge Fulton's less discussed often overlooked jazz influences.

Review: The word 'legend' gets banded about rather a lot, but it is certainly applicable to West London scene stalwart Kaidi Tatham. Further confirmation of this elevated status can be found throughout "It's A World Before You", a staggeringly good album that marks the musician-producer's first solo set for some seven years. While rooted in the kind of warm, rich and life-affirming jazz-funk-fuelled broken beat workouts with which Tatham is most readily associated (and they're naturally superb), there's plenty of killer diversions dotted throughout. These include a couple of spacey, soul-flecked ambient rubs, a sublime collaboration with hip-hop/modern soul fusionists Children of Zeus, and a fine head-nodding hip-hop jam featuring rapper Uhmeer. In a word: essential.

Review: The influential Norwegian house pioneer Bjorn Torske returns with his first solo studio album in eight years and it's a remarkable return to form. Returning back to the spacier, cosmic stew he put onto to boil 20 years ago, the flavour is just as strong and the grooves are just as succulent as they where when he first started. While retaining his leftfield edge, his eyes are refixed on the dancefloor with some of his most driven tracks in years; the strident piano strikes on "Clean Air", the Kraftwerkian syncopation and drama of "Dalen" and the theatrical lightning of "Natta" are just some of the many highlights.

Review: Minimal and tech-house DJs went wild for the first, double album-length missive from Germany's OFFM label, so we expect this follow-up to sell quickly, too. As with its predecessor, there's much to get excited about on OFFM number two, from the breezy synth stabs, undulating blissful melodies and bubbly rhythm of DJ Meme Generator's "Lowlife" and the throbbing tech-funk of Non Paying Buyer's "Pressato", to the deliciously spacey wonder that is Tomi's "Moti", where dreamy chords and intergalactic electronics ebb and flow above a rolling Paris-style tech-house groove. In other words, it's another top-notch selection of well-produced club cuts.

Review: Magazine/label DEQ hit their 13th and 14th volumes and curate another exceptional V/A set to celebrate. Pure Detroit-related creativity, the EP runs the groove gamut right the way through from glacial pacers such as Big Strick's "K Street Chronicles" to deep smoky slo-mo soulful introspective house such as Mega Powers' "Breathless". Elsewhere we're dumbstruck by percussive wizardry on Lafleur's "Tribute To The Sun", taken down a metallic tunnel full of frogs by Belmont Boys' "Ultramagnetic" and given food for thought on Kraig Tertzag's off-kilter spoken word roller "Roses". Sublime as always from DEQ.
