  1. Motion Activation (5:29)
  2. Slow Jams (5:46)
  3. Amphibious (Green) (6:25)
  4. Functional Apparatus (5:38)
Review: Tony Ollivierra is an underground hero from Detroit, who in addition to releases as Ibex on his Ibex Music and Northside District imprints, had some respected editions on the likes of Planet E around the turn of the millenium. He donned the DJ Slym Fas alias around 1996 - 1997, when he produced three EPs which have been much sought after in recent years. These unearthed jams come courtesy of STEP: the new vinyl-only label from the founders of PETS - Catz n Dogz. From the bleepy and lo-slung "Motion Activation", the emotive hi-tech soul of "Amphibious (Green)" or the epic futurism of "Functional Apparatus" calling to mind the work of local legends such as Derrick May or Juan Atkins.

Cat: DBT 101. Rel: 04 Jun 18
  1. Paradise Village (8:08)
  2. Brother Other (7:30)
  3. Buri Planet (7:10)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Doublet is the production moniker of friends and musical partners Tomoki Tamura and Tuccillo, previously releasing together on other labels, they have come together to form the new eponymously named Doublet imprint as a channel for their own music. Tomoki and his Holic Trax label have long been serving up solid house music whilst Tuccillo has conjured up numerous Beatport chart toppers on labels like 2020Vision, Visionquest and Holic Trax. Here their unique style brings you back from classic house music to future minimalism and is sure to fill you with joy. Up first is the title track, a charming house shuffler with woozy synths, light footed percussion and skipping rhythms that give an off kilter and deep dancefloor vibe. 'Brother Other' is a slightly more physical affair with lumpy beats, tense synth crescendos and stiff snares that really encourage you to shake your limbs. Lastly, 'Buri Planet' is a deep and sensual number with clever vocals samples adding an element of pained soul, rubbery bass bringing warmth and golden synths and acid squelches building yet more character. This is accomplished, alive sounding house music that really does sound fresh. Doublet, then, is already off to a winning start. Vinyl Only.

  2. Afters (3am mix) (6:18)
  3. DYCX 5 (6:35)
Review: Not content with releasing Appleblim's debut album this month, Sneaker Social Club stoke the fires with this highly anticipated sophomore EP. Once again, it casts a wide net across the house/axis with all corners chartered: "Influence" hits with a warm synth insistency you might imagine Lil Louis heralding in a Chicago warehouse 30 years ago. "Afters" is a classic strutter with a sultry piano-tickled swing while "DYCX 5" slaps with a relenting jack and spiralling arpeggios laced with pure positivity. On point.

So Far (feat Ras Vadah) (feat Leo Gunn remix) (40 gram vinyl 7" + magazine)
Cat: FFDE 001. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. So Far (original extended take)
  2. So Far (Leo Gunn remix)
Review: Dubbyman is on a roll with his releases at the moment, not least thanks to his incredible Deep Is Dead album landing recently on Deep Explorer. This time the Spanish deep house maestro is helping launch First Floor with an original jam that revels in a blanket of fog. "So Far" is the deepest of house jams, rolling along slowly and smoky without losing its presence, thanks in no small part to the soulful croon of the unnamed vocalist. Leo Gunn then steps up for the B-side, remixing "So Far" into a sprightly terrace anthem replete with snappy piano chords to warm your cockles, but fear not because that all-encompassing Dubbyman vibe persists throughout this release.

  1. The Wave Function (7:08)
  2. Solastalgia (6:41)
  3. The Unavoidable Consequence Of You (6:00)
  4. Tradition No 3 (6:24)
Review: Consistently vibrating at a frequency beyond the conventional realms of house and techno, UntilMyHeartStops returns with a particularly captivating transmission from furtive jazz-peddling beatsmith Tom Ellis. This release serves as an opportunity for the Freerotation regular to move into a techno-inflected space without losing his handle on delicate, evocative pathways through the minimal milieu. The subtle throb of "Solastalgia" sounds especially at home on UMHS, hinging around snaking machine rhythms and a buttery bassline that could easily go on for days without growing tiresome. Watch out for "The Unavoidable Consequence Of You" though - a feisty party heater that finds Ellis dipping his toe into the sample / edit snakepit and pulling out a python.

Cat: VR 004. Rel: 29 May 18
  1. Subliminal Wave
  2. Phayse Distance
  3. Memory Upgrade
  4. Permission To Dream
Review: The latest joint on Verdant comes from an exciting new collaboration between ESB (previously spotted on Echovolt, Leftroom and Heart To Heart) and Mihail Petrovski of Distant Worlds and Seventh Sign. This is classically informed machine soul as you would expect on Verdant, kicking off with the expressive deep techno stomp of "Subliminal Wave". "Phayse Distance" edges things towards the stratosphere with a staggered groove, plenty of cosmic acid tweaking and airy pads, and "Memory Upgrade" floats in a bath of mellow chords and submerged drums. "Permission To Dream" cools things down even more, ending the record on a particularly mellow note that B12 would be proud of.

  2. Leandre - "2gether" (7:00)
  3. Vincent Floyd - "Images Of Spring" (6:17)
  4. Norm Talley - "Detroit Dubz" (7:22)
Review: Here, Descendents of The Deep launches the From Chicago To Detroit series, bringing together a quartet of deep house tracks from Michigan and Illinois-based producers. Jordan Fields kicks things off with the electric piano-laden strut of the surprisingly trippy "Excitement", before Vincent Floyd offers up a masterclass in deep, New Jersey-influenced analogue deepness in the shape of "2gether". Flip for the wonderful blissfulness of Leandre's "Images of Spring" - think starry melodies from Detroit, coupled with the rolling swing of Chicago - and "Detroit Dubz", a killer exercise in spooky beatdown from Norm Talley and Mike Huckaby. With its' heavy, compressed bassline, creepy chords and reverb-laden textures, it sounds like it was tailor-made for Halloween.

  1. Timanfaya (7:21)
  2. Baobab (7:20)
  3. Kalaa (7:18)
Review: Santa Cruz de Tenerife based Pablo Fierro is up next for Compost Black label, following up top releases on the likes of Atjazz, Suol and Innervisions. Speaking of the latter label, the title track here on the The Timanfaya EP features the same kind of Afro influenced hi-tech soul you've come to know him for, while "Baobab" features the same kind of emotions and hypnotic polyrhythms you'd similarly expect of Toto Chiavetta. Finally on the flip, we have the ethereal dancefloor drama of "Kalaa" which steadily builds the elements of tension and suspense over its duration, employing mesmerising melodies, entrancing bell tones and subtle rhythms to marvellous effect.

Carmine (12" repress)
Cat: FIT 012. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Carmine (7:57)
  2. First Found (7:21)
Review: While establishing the Fit Sound imprint affiliated with the Detroit distro outlet of the same name , Aaron 'Fit' Siegel has been careful not to load the imprint with too many of his own productions, choosing instead to deliver material from Marcellus Pittman, Anthony 'Shake' Shakir, MGUN and Dungeon Acid. Here he makes a welcome return with two tracks of melodious, atmospheric, Motor City deepness. "Carmine" is particularly alluring, with twinkling melodies winding their way around yearning pads, bittersweet chords and shuffling, cymbal-heavy percussion. "First Found" is a little more forthright, with off-key pianos and scattergun electronics riding a tougher, locked-in groove.

Review: Anonymous Toulouse collective Folklore elevate their third missive to wax and it's sounding all the fatter for it. Freerange system focused jams we're treated to the full spectrum; the ricochet riddim and dreamy twinkles of the eastern jungle stepper "165 Jazz", the Claussell spiritual uplift of jacking gem "Kominike", the skank happy hot shuffle UK of "21' Speakers" and the deep oceanic submersion of the title track "Jungle Strut". Some lores were made to be broken...

Cat: MR 1010. Rel: 02 May 18
  1. Flying (Justin Van Der Volgen edit) (8:02)
  2. Flying (Justin Van Der Volgen dub) (8:13)
Review: The latest missive on Justin Van Der Volgen's My Rules imprint sees the Brooklyn producer rework a lesser-known, previously digital-only track from storied Japanese producer Yukihiro Fukutomi under the familiar Foog alias. On side A Van Der Volgen gives the track the melodious, heavily electronic deep house shuffler the edit treatment, wisely making more of the original's squeezable synthesizer bassline and Fukitomi's bobbing waves of melody. For those who fancy a bit of sleaze, the flipside Dub, in which Van Der Volgen focuses on the chunky groove underpinning the Tokyo stalwart's undulating electronic motifs, is as throbbing, groovy and percussive as you'd expect.

Review: Fouking heck; is there any stopping this dynamic, vibe-hungry Dutch duo? Having buttered us up with funk on Outplay, they're now letting rip with three mating calls that are almost guaranteed to get you weak at the knees. "Mating Call" is premium uncut disco house that's rich in positivity and feels. "Just Feel Good" lives up to its name with its loose off grid groove and distant, hazy party feels running point throughout while "Down Below" winks good night with lavish Rhodes and a subtle but infectious percussion arrangement. Mate rates.

Review: Innate is a new Bristol label born from the blog of the same name. This first release features a spread of talent both established and emergent, all bound together by a love of illustrious machine soul. Gilbert leads in with the sumptuous tones of "Birds Of Paradise" before Mark Hand takes control with the uptempo cascade of "Lessons." The vintage techno vibes continue apace on the B side as Lerosa lays out one of his gorgeous square wave bass lines amidst some snagging drums and quivering synth flourishes, and then label boss Owain K finishes the picture with the laid back musings of "Pixeled Scenery."

  5. Broken VHS (radio edit) (4:48)
Review: Fresh from fine recent outings on Lovedancing and Quintessentials, rising star Felipe Gordon releases his first EP on Toy Tonics, a label he's been loosely affiliated with since contributing a track to a compilation style EP last year. The centrepiece of the 12" is clearly "Acid Party at Tuesaquillo", a cut that cleverly combines classic deep house elements (woozy chords, spine-tingling pianos) with the jacking rhythms and mind-altering acid lines of early Chicago house. While the track arguably didn't need remixing, we're rather enjoying the deeper, jazzier interpretation from Retrogott and DJ Qualle, not to mention the enveloping warmth of Seb Wildblood's Detroit Techno-meets-deep house rework.

  4. The Juno Experience (5:46)
Review: Sleazy McQueen's Lovedancing is back with Colombia's Felipe Gordon who has appeared previously on top labels such as Quintessentials, Toy Tonics and S3A. Seriously lo-slung disco deviance awaits you on The Glory EP: from the looped-up and dusted down title track and the smooth, Rhodes-led deepness of "Nebiancater". On the flip, get into the groove in slo-mo style on the irresistible "Mara" until he saves the best for last on "The Juno Experience" - mind you, we could be biased. No, seriously: this neon-lit, boogie-down jam for the late night sounds like a familiar classic (as we're sure you'll agree) and is bound to get bums wiggling on the dancefloor guaranteed.

  4. The Dub Is Gone
Review: That Hudd Traxx powerhouse keeps on pumping out the jams, with regular Hudd hood Goshawk back in the saddle with some of his most assured beats to date. "Get Up To Get Down" channels a limber, Prince indebted funk, straps it to a simmering house beat and then drafts Erik Rico in for a killer vocal that takes you right back to the best of '90s vocal house. Then Art Of Tones jumps on for a remix that beefs the original up with some more big room elements, as one might well expect from the French titan. "The Love Is Gone" gets into a spaced out disco house frame of mind, which "The Dub Is Gone" then shuffles up into a slinky little groover.

  1. Day Without Yesterday (5:40)
  2. Six O Six (6:11)
Review: Originally from South Korea but moving to London at the age of 14 where she spent her formative years, Peggy Gou has since moved to Berlin (of course!) where she's since made her break releasing two EPs in less than a year on Matt Edwards esteemed Rekids imprint. Her new one on Phonica white sees her explore classic deep house aesthetics convincingly such as on the dusty MPC bashing Moodymann style deepness of "Day Without Yesterday" with its deep funk bass, emotive strings and woozy sample all working in perfect harmony. But "Six O Six" gets a craving for the acid life with some gnarly 303 lines going head to head with hands in the air vocals and rusty drum machine grooves.

Cat: NNFP 004. Rel: 29 May 18
  1. Peggy Gou - "Shero"
  2. Juju & Jordash - "Throwdown"
Review: The reach of not-for-profit label Needs continues to impress as they link up with Peggy Gou and Juju & Jordash in a collaboration with UN Women for an expertly curated 12" of interstellar sonics strapped to a 4/4 beat. Gou is on typically strident form on "Shero," presenting her keen instinct for 90s house and more fluttering, psychotropic tones distilled into dancefloor manna as intriguing as it is easy on the ears. Juju & Jordash meanwhile channel their own learned approach to live jam improvisation into a true trance-out of strafing arpeggios and spongy FX for the trip-out crew to get lost in.

  3. The Other Man (6:07)
  4. Capital Road (7:24)
Review: American lo-fi house champion Grant is back with the fourth edition of his eponymous imprint. There's a familiar anthemic loop accompanying the moody acid groove of "Spiritual Path". The beats get broken up next, but the track is still in spiritually emotive fashion on the lush "Mediate" while the flipside features more soulful and reflective moments for late night dancefloors. In particular, the sensual "The Other Man" or the ultra deep and dub inflected mood lighting of "Capital Road" somewhat reminiscent of his tremendous work on last year's No Lights EP for Lobster Theremin - one of last year's favourites! Following up his brilliant Perception LP last year on Duke's Distribution, Grant retains his winning streak.
