  2. Soul Value (Euro Groove) (6:22)
  3. Soul Value (99 Adrenaline Groove) (6:36)
  4. Soul Value (Exotic Dream Groove) (6:25)
Review: NAFF's latest glassy-eyed dancefloor workout comes from Housemates, a new production pairing comprised of established Montreal producers Adam Feingold (AKA Ex-Terrestrial) and Francis Latrelle (AKA Priori). In both its "Jersey Groove" and "Euro Groove" forms, "Soul Value" is colourful, tactile and deliciously loved-up, with snaking synth-sax lines meandering over a hugely positive and summery backing track. In truth, both versions sound like they drew much influence from both original Italian "dream house" and the early work of Dream 2 Science man Ben Cenac. The former influence floats to the fore on Lamusa II's irresistible "Exotic-Dream" mix, while fellow Canadian Florist serves up a thrillingly bass-heavy, breakbeat-laden revision ("99 Adrenaline Groove") that looks to early British breakbeat hardcore for inspiration.

  1. Brother Man (Red Axes remix) (9:15)
  2. Brother Man (Hiroshi Watanabe Kaito remix) (8:06)
Review: Opilec Music is an Italian eclectic label founded in Turin by Gianluca Pandullo - mainly as a conduit for his beloved I-Robots project. His track from last year "Brother Man" gets a hypnotic makeover by current 'it' Israeli duo Red Axes. Their version gets some proper tunnel vision happening with its swirling gated synths, mellow percussion and liquid basslines beneath Tuscania's sultry vocals. On the flip, veteran Japanse producer Hiroshi Watanabe aka Kaito delivers another awe-inspiring impression of hi-tech soul with his remix - that is just as evocative and powerful as his previous work for the likes of Transmat and Ibadan.

  1. ILO - "Everybody" (9:02)
  2. OOFT! - "Howard's Way" (7:09)
Review: Glasgow's Ooft! continues the FOTO-X series on his label with a sure shot 12" that presents two tracks sure to nestle their way into all manner of on-point record bags for many moons to come. First up is iLO who plays the long game with a yearning and burning slice of deep house that starts out stripped and subtle before blossoming into a fully-fledged vocal delight. Ooft! takes care of the B-side with a boogie-tasting get down entitled "Howard's Way" which will get heads nodding and bodies popping to a bassline that calls to mind Evelyn King's much loved "I'm In Love" low end destroyer.

Cat: VR 005. Rel: 06 Aug 18
  1. Her Blissful Solitude
  2. Common Places
  3. Radiating Soul
  4. Her Nocturnal Note
Review: Verdant Recordings continues its quest to provide a space for lesser-known artists exploring the deepest pockets of electronic music, not least around the 4/4 axis. Next up on the label is the first public appearance from Interjection, a London-based artist who has been cooking up an immersive sound for some time. "Her Blissful Solitude" is a smoky deep house cut that drifts through heavy clouds of pads, while "Common Places" drops some brittle electro rhythms into the mix without lifting the veil of ambience. "Radiating Soul" has an equally intricate set of rhythms at work, with extra notes of 303 sprinkled over the top, and "Her Nocturnal Note" finishes the EP off with a shimmering trip out to complement the A1.

Review: Lagaffe Tales is a record label based in Reykjavik, Iceland, established in 2012 by Jonbjorn Finnbogason & Viktor Birgisson. Following up some brilliant releases recently by the likes of Moony Me, Malouane and Ilo, we have Arsaell Thor Ingvason aka Intr0beatz (Something Else/Closer To Truth) with some rather lush grooves. The Crucial Catering EP features the dusty Money $ex influenced bliss of "Dumpin", the hypnotic deep house of "Mystery Ride" and the slo-mo boogie-down vibe of "Desco".

  3. Records In The Sun (3:43)
  4. Barbary Fig (4:38)
Review: San Fran multi-instrumentalist Isaac Weisner comes correct on Endless Flight with four perfectly timed summer joints. Sitting pretty between a whole range of styles from cumbia to afrofunk, all tied up and fused with rich, stately mid tempo house grooves, each of the four cuts seem tailor made for sunny-side soundtracks. "Kejetia Star" struts with such juicy flare you would be forgiven thinking you're in Lagos, circa 72, "Dragonfruit" follows with more afro flavours but with stacks more percussion and loopy mischief while "Records In The Sun" flutters its eyelids with a little tropical disco charm and the savviest words any selector can hear this time of year: Don't leave your records in the sun! Finally we retire with the bluegrass introspection of the steel string twanging folky "Barbary Fig". Wise manoeuvres.

Review: Russian producer Kirill Sergeev has been setting light to the likes of Hell Yeah, Bordello A Parigi and Bahnsteig 23 in the past under his Kito Jempere alias, and now it's the turn of Pleasure Unit to get his unique treatment. "House Track" may seem like an innocuous title but don't be fooled, it's far from a conventional house jam. Loose, 80s tinted production vibes abound across the record, not least with the party heaters on the A side. "Never Been To Ibiza Beaches 1997" is a more laid back jam, but still sizzling with inventive energy, and "Jungle Mantra" explores tribal percussion with a fresh slant that will call out to the tropical spinners.

Review: It would be fair to say that Kaffe Creme is a producer on the rise. There was rightly much hype around his 2016 debuyt on Moonrise Hill Material and it's likely that this belated follow-up on Vertv will be equally well received. He hits the ground running by wrapping muted blues trumpet around a crunchy MPC-house groove on "I <3 U", before brilliantly alternating between woozy sample manipulation and dusty deep house beats on the odd-but-ace "Jonny Hartman". On the flipside, he first charged off towards 140 BPM territory on the stop-start dancefloor insanity of "Umusa", before proving his Pepe Bradock style deep disco-house credentials on the sublime "Passacaille", which rounds off a fine EP in stunning fashion.

Review: Aussie larrikins represent on another edition of Nerang's various artist compilations. Run from of the sunny Gold Coast by DJ Whpr Snpr, #3 features six generous servings of meme house for millennials. Hannover's Ray Kandinksi is up first and presents the emotive and soulful ode to first wave Detroit on "Just For A Short While", Austrian (yes, not Australian!) purveyor of all things lo-fi, DOS, delivers the EP's standout on the evocative thump of "Guaca". On the flip, Sydney's Anthony Fade goes for that old school Nu-groove vibe of way back on the acidic and saturated antics of "5 Miles" and everyone's favourite DJ Longdick (E-Beamz) delivers the releases' most sombre moment on the deep mood lighting of "Space Channel".

  3. David Tapfuma - "Magamba" (4:32)
  4. David Tapfuma - "Magamba" (Esa Zimtronix Direct mix) (5:19)
Review: This compilation style outing from Southern African music enthusiasts Nyami Nyami is billed as "an ode to the music of Zimbabwe past and future". Side A boasts cuts from two Bulawayo-based "Kwela" outfits: a terrific, heavily percussive future dub interpretation of Bulawayo Kwela's "Mysterious Africa" by The Comet Is Coming producer Danalogue, and the sparse, sun-kissed acoustic bliss of Elliot Phiri's "Nomalanga". Turn to the flip for two versions of Hararre-based David Tapfuma's beautiful "Magumba". There's the original version, where Tapfuma sings over a solo mbira melody, and a superbly glassy-eyed, synth-heavy 21st century club version by Auntie Flo collaborator (and hugely talented producer) Esa Williams. As good as the rest of the EP is, his version is worth the admission price on its own.

Review: Astonishingly, it's four years since Daniela La Luz's "Did You Ever" first slipped out on Rawax offshoot Housewax. It remains one of the Berlin artist's strongest tracks, so it's perhaps unsurprising that the Frankfurt label has decided to commission a trio of tasty new reworks. Alongside the deep, drifting, sensual and Matthew Herbert-ish original version (here bolted on to the tail end of the EP) you'll find a sublime, ultra-positive re-shape by Chicago house pioneers Virgo Four, a glitchy, cut-up, techno tempo deep house revision by Dana Ruh and a rambunctious, 4/4 UK garage influenced remix by Cinthie. Predictably, every single track is a winner.

Review: Rising Irish groove conjuror Mark Laird makes his wax debut on brand new Italian label Hopera with two sterling deep jack house cuts. "Funk That" lives up to its name with rippling perky Detroit- reminiscent synths and soft thumping chugs while "Crazy Things" provides a bit of a grubbier B-side pleasure; weighing in at almost nine minutes with a wavey shimmering steel drum riff, there's a bulbous bassline grinding away beneath that sounds more prominent the bigger the system you play this on. Sitting somewhere between young Faze Action and early Yoshitoshi, Laird's onto some timeless tackle right here.

  3. Higher! (Byron The Aquarius remix) (6:13)

Review: The productions of City Fly co-founder Ashley "Arthur Jr" Stevenson just seem to get better and better. "Higher!" marks his return to the Leicester-based label following outings on Better Listen and Kolour Ltd, and is unquestionably his strongest EP to date. The title track, featuring the sugary-sweet vocals of Erik Rico, is particularly good, boasting a near perfect balance between rolling electronic grooves, dusty samples and luscious soul-jazz instrumentation. There are plenty of highlights elsewhere across the EP, too, from the loopy, sample-house goodness of "Escape Through Time", to the smooth, jazz-flecked deep house breeze that is closer "Spirit of Harmony". Arguably best of all, though, is the deep, jazz-funk flecked revision of "Higher!" by fast-rising star Byron The Aquarius that opens side B of an essential EP.

Review: Demarkus Lewis is a relentless ambassador for the true soulful roots of house music, boasting a two decades deep discography that would make a completist shudder. Here he is on a label that fits him perfectly - D3 Elements. On "Without Pause" he lays out a sturdy bedrock of bubbling synth bass and rich, interwoven layers of keys and chords that charge forth with urgency, while "Lady In Pink" shows his more immersive side with intricate rhythmic trysts and jazzed out keys that would sound at home in an Osunlade set. "Behind Closed Doors (Afro Main Mix)" has pride of place across the whole B side, making the most of the space to build up a subtly broken beatdown with an infectious vocal turn from the man himself.

Review: For the latest release on his constantly impressive Apron imprint, Stevie "Funkineven" Julien has looked to Bristol for inspiration. Lend Me Your Ears marks the debut of new production twosome LMYE, a mysterious collaboration between two people that met at the city's record store Idle Hands. They start with "Cali 76", an intriguing fusion of techno kicks, wonderfully loose percussion, woozy guitar samples and dashing Rhodes notes. They push things up a notch on "Pays To Be Pushed", where exotic sitar lines and dreamy pads ride bumpin', garage influenced grooves. Interestingly, both cuts are notably different from either producer's solo work, making it harder to easily guess their identities.

Review: UK dance legend, Dego, is back on his own 2000black imprint, stomping and storming through the place with nothing but ethereal house vibes. He's got Lord with him this time, a newcomer onto the block, and it's clear that the duo has some chemistry running real deep - "One Way To The Other" chugs along to a jazzy note, made more danceable by a heavy bassline, while the flip kicks off with "Oh It's You Again", a dusty house nugget with the sort of percussion that recalls the early 90s Detroit era; "The Island" is a continuation of that, this time dubbier and more beat-centric, and "When You Get It" further develops the groove with a gentle, melodic string of jazzed-out notes. All killer - no filler!

Review: Following a fine contribution to YAM's Youandmusic Volume 2 EP earlier in the year, Lewis "LT" Taylor pops up on one of his favourite labels, Rhythm Section International. Taylor has been described by label chief Bradley Zero as a "prodigal talent" and there's plenty of evidence to support that view on this debut EP proper. Opener "Untitled (Chesney)" is a wonderfully bouncy and sun-kissed chunk of Italian-influenced piano house, while "Menosphere" sees him wrap lusciously positive melodic motifs and loved-up synths around a chunky breakbeat house rhythm. Arguably even better is title track "Forest Floor", a sticky and humid, tropical breakbeat workout full of tribal percussion and glassy-eyed sunrise electronics. To round things off, Taylor delivers more feel-good, breakbeat-driven deep house positivity in the shape of "North Circular".
