  1. Life After Subway (4:12)
  2. The Blessings Of Salvation (4:35)
  3. Return Of Pastor Shadrach (6:12)
  4. Blue Signs (3:05)
Review: Starting 2020 like they mean to go on, West London's 2000 Black crew serves up an essential four-tracker created during jam sessions between regular collaborators Kaidi Tatham, Akwasi Mensah, Matt Lord and Dennis "Dego" McFarlane (Ranks). As with their previous collaborative releases, its' four tracks variously join the dots between deep house, bruk, jazz-funk and mellower flavours. As usual, the beats are tight and weighty, the musicianship exceptional (Kaidi's keys-playing being a particular highlight), the chords deep and the lead lines memorable. While all four tracks are excellent, our picks are the rubbery bruk-up bliss of "Return of Pastor Shadrach" and the sun-kissed broken house warmth of "Life After Subway".

  1. Cervo - "Hesse Groove" (4:37)
  2. Taurtollo - "Om's Mehndi" (5:40)
  3. Chambers - "The Gentleman" (6:46)
  4. Yadava - "Kadampa 125" (5:08)
Review: The fourth release on Manchester-focused label Ad Hoc brings together a range of outernational grooves from some fast-rising talents. Cervo is aligned with the Banana Hill parties, and also previously released on Black Acre and Lumberjacks In Hell. His "Hesse Groove" takes a mellow, spaced out approach to dusty machine-powered house, while Taurtollo gets into a bongo-heavy jam for the eclectic warm up session. Chambers' "The Gentleman" is a loose and smooth jazzy number that revolves around a few key samples to create its seductive vibe, and then Yadava finishes the EP off with the free-roaming double bass exploration of "Kadampa 125."

Deeper Wrestling (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AE 10LTD. Rel: 18 Nov 19
  1. Anton Kubikov - "When Is Deep" (7:54)
  2. Ohm & Octal Industries - "Aureola" (5:35)
  3. Thor - "Who Stole My Yacht" (7:12)
  4. SCSI9 - "Aetherius" (8:04)
Review: The latest release on AE Recordings showcases a whole host of excellent producers versed in the language of icy Scandinavian techno. Anton Kubikov is up first with the forlorn leads and dubby ripples of "When Is Deep", which is followed up by a wonderfully dusty deep house locomotive from Ohm & Octal Industries. Thor gets into a strident micro house groove on "Who Stole My Yacht", peppering the swung drums with plenty of immersion chamber echoes and pings. SCSI9 makes a welcome return to close the record out with "Aetherius", a classic minimal tech house bouncer with plenty of spooky atmospherics on top of the mid-00s flavoured synth hooks.

Review: Next up on the ever-excellent Oscillat is "Spellbound" by the supremely talented Matthew Dekay. This moving deep house jam uses a few key elements to make a soul-stirring confection for truly spine-tingling moments in the middle of the dance. From the slithers of vocal to the insistent key riff that bounces throughout, this is an outstanding slice of contemporary house music loaded with feeling. Mandar then take the original and inject it with a feisty peak time energy shot through with a little trancey magic and an acidic undertone. It's not a raging beast but rather an energizing workout for the brain and the body - just what you need in the midst of a marathon.

  2. Phran - "Nexxxt" (4:49)
  3. DJ Handsome - "Pop Yo Pussy" (4:46)
  4. Traxman - "Get High" (3:00)
Review: Hot damn! Fresh Chicago booty action from legends of the genre on the fifth outing from the increasingly on-point Albion label! Here we have the legendary Dance Manian Dj Lil' Tal with "Questions", which sees the producer give up some of his classic ghetto sound with the usual bag of kinky vocal samples, while Phran's "Nexxxt" is rawer, nastier and more punishing while still keeping the vocal shots. Legend Traxman looses the plot on the bumpy "Get High", and the mysterious DJ Handsome sways and swings among bleeps on the aptly named "Pop Yo Pussy".

  3. James Fox - "Feeling Free" (6:51)
  4. Kieran Holden - "Wild Palms" (7:51)
Review: Following the royal success that was Maximum Joy, Alfresco is back with another release.

2015 marks ten years of Alfresco Disco parties. The label is still only young, however - but the crew bring their party planning, djing and producing experience into the label.

The Maximum Joy pt. 2 presents 4 good friends of the Alfresco Crew, both old and new, who each bring something different to the e.p whilst still maintaining the free spirited Alfresco Vibe.

Thermal Bear brings in a straight up classic deep house beat with 'Round and Round'. Outrageously warm chunky production and one to keep the crowd moving in the wee hours.

Kemback's effort shuffles effortlessly into the mind, taking you on a dreamy trip to somewhere wonderful. A strong nod to Floating Points here with it's heavy swing, gritty drums, and Kemback makes subtle but powerful use of his fine musicianship.

James Fox brings the good time disco-house vibe with the sample-heavy 'Feeling Free'. The wonderful arrangement and vocal make this a pure summer record that's been getting great crowd reactions.

Our Cornish Connection and newcomer Kieran Holden slows it down and makes it nice and trippy with the magnificent 'Wild Palms'. We love this dark, acid tinged sound which adds a different dimension to the ep and shows why Kieran has already been getting props from the likes of Tici Taci and the LFOS crew.

  4. Teenage Music - "Runnin From Your Love" (main final) (6:06)
Review: Brooklyn imprint Atypical Dopeness has previously given us homegrown talents Vick Lavender, Dawn Tillmann and Joe Claussell recently and now serve up some fresh talent on their label roster and it's sounding pretty hot. On the A side Eqwel & Ze's "Static Perc" is some pretty sinister dark house with some exotic steel drums supported by some violent tribal chants and minimal electronics; you've got to hear this one! "Runnin' From Your Love (Reprise)" by Teenage Music is even darker with its snarling sub bass and gloomy DX7 pads over a restrained groove; loved this one too. The main version on the flip has vocals and is more restrained. On the flip "Chellywood" by Russian Anton Neotnas (WAXXX) gets more uplifting than the other side but still mysterious enough with its soulful pads and deep groove making this one seriously emotive tune. Tip!

Review: DJ Spinna & Kai Alce's Foundations project hits its second release on BBE with two stone cold foundation setters from one of Chicago's true dons: Tyree Cooper. First up is 88's almighty acid banger "Video Crash" (or "Acid Crash" as it's also been known for 30 years) that still hits harder than almost every techno record made ever since. Flip for a trip 1989 as Joe Smooth sends "Hardcore Hip House" to the promised land with his instantly distinctive piano touches and strong sense of soul. Serious history business.

Review: From Kon's forthcoming compilation on BBE entitled Kon & The Gang, this 12? sampler features two cuts taken from the LP and an exclusive remix from Boston producer and mix engineer Caserta, namely "Timeless" (Caserta mix)" a tasty serving of super deep and low slung disco goodness. A more functional edit for DJ use follows on "Timeless" (remix - Caserta mix)". Review: Sheffield's Thatmanmonkz returns with the Feels Trip To The District EP, where he teams up with his good pal Martin Miguel. The record is inspired by several trips to dope parties in the District of Columbia, home of the quickly rising label Better Listen Records. Starting off with the the lo-slung disco deepness of "Sweetiez Fresh", it's a dusty and looped up jam that will appeal to fans of the Robsoul sound. On the flip, things take a well funkier and more soulful turn with that familiar vocal on "The Assassinator" and finally things end on a groovy and sun kissed note with the slo-mo/hip-hop inspired boogie of "XDC". Real name Scott Moncrieff, he's appeared previously on a who's who of labels such as Delusions Of Grandeur, Kolour LTD and Classic in recent times.

Review: The revered Halal Prepared series on boe extends to its fourth volume with four new acts fresh to the label. Hotly tipped duo, Invisible Menders, made up of outstanding DJ Jane Fitz and thus far underrated producer Dom Ahtuam contribute a stunning Balearic bass-heavy house cut "Fifth Time Lucky". Fresh from his solo EP, John Shima slots in a deep techno workout "Thought Wave". Toby Tobias of Rekids fame pumps out some raw basement lofi vibes with his jacker "Sword Art Arcade" and rounding off the EP on a delicate note is Tim Smith's soft and melodic 707 jam "Graphene".

  3. In Search (Javonntte remix) (5:28)
  4. Voices (6:08)
Review: The Boogie Cafe label is in the form of its life right now, as this mighty missive from Turbojazz defiantly proves. The Milan-based producer is famed for darting between jazzy broken beat and smooth, soul-flecked house; naturally, both bases are covered here. Top of the tree is "In Search", a punchy and loose-limbed broken beat roller that layers spacey jazz-funk synths and opulent Rhodes riffs atop raw analogue bass and infectious beats. "Voices" offers a jazzier take on broken beat, while "Yellow Wave" is a classic-sounding deep house cut rich in tasty organ stabs, acid bass and starry-eyed electronics. To top it all off, Javonntte has provided a brilliant a bumpin', bass-heavy house rework of "In Search" that's worth the entrance price on its own.

Review: Spanish label Bucketround kicks off a new series called Deep Encounters with this four-track various artists release from some lesser known talents with some seriously fresh ideas. Jesus Gonsev taps into the mood of labels like Pleasure Zone and the stripped down Romanian sound, but there's other forces at work in the meditative bliss of "Terminal 5". Tominori Hosoya takes things in the direction of Dubbymann style deep house, all pattering bongos and sweeping melodic content before Allstar Motomusic brings a tougher, old-skool New York approach to steamy house music. Manuel Costela finishes the EP off with the delicately balanced "Mind Purveyor", holding back on the drums and leading with the chords instead.

Review: A pioneer for the hip house scene in Chicago back in the 80s, Tyree is still at it thirty years later and sounding as vital as ever. This collaboration with Pure God is a thoroughly different concern to the jacking acid of the early days, bringing a live drum sound, funk bass and even a stirring string lilt into the mix on "Back Home". Whether you plump for the full vocal mix or the stripped back instrumental, it's an anthemic party starting beast of a jam for peak time maneuvers. The "Alternative Mix" of "Back Home" on the B-side is a more classic, throbbing slice of mechanical minimalism for the traditional Chicago jackers out there, and there's some "Bonus Beats" thrown in for good measure too!

Review: The Chicago Vinyl series continues to act as a vessel for ever more essential club tackle from the one and only Tyree Cooper. On this occasion he's collaborating with celebrated vocalist Isis and the legendary Adonis for this absolutely storming tribute to the heritage of Chicago house music. The original "Passin Thru The House" is a consummate jack track, shouting out all the right names and letting the 707 fills rip through the groove. Tyree then offers up three alternate mixes of the track, from the bugging "Vocal Mix" to the uplifting melodious form of the "Vocal Soul Remix." There's an instrumental version tacked on if you need it, but it's all about Isis' killer vocal on this 12".

Review: The latest joint on Constant Black is from Subb-an and Thoma Bulwer, who work together to bring forth some seriously smart ruminations on minimal techno with an inventive modern edge. "Apollo Sun" holds court over the A side with an artful, modulating synth voice that sounds as though it could well have been cooked up through a tangled network of patch leads. On the B side, "Cosmic Breaks" has a strong set of drums that crunch in all the right places, and plenty of dreamy seasoning to make for a truly smart midtempo roller. "Spray" completes the set with the spiciest joint on the record, all tightly wound beats and nagging rhythmic wriggles both built for functionality but equally intriguing on the ear - a perfect DJ tool with enough sass to stand on its own.

  1. Light It Up (11:29)
  2. Dimmer Switch (10:35)
Review: Scott Fraser and Timothy J Fairplay's Crimes Of The Future label has had quite the banner year, ushering in various projects from the pair as well as seeking out like-minded contemporaries such as Perseus Traxx. The latest Crimes of the Future release introduces Bulb, another project bearing the label founder's finger prints along with a high profile third colluder in one William Burnett. Apparently laid down at WT Records HQ in the spring of 2014 whilst Fairplay and Fraser were committing Crimes in NYC, Bulb is a bold offering from the trio with two extended dancefloor workouts taking a side each. "Light It Up" pairs ghetto techno breaks with something from wayward Kosmiche studio experiments in deepest Germany, whilst "Dimmer Switch" plunges into a world of psychedelia and cavernous cave dwellings thanks to some dark ambient synthesis and stabbing drums.

"Take Me Back" is a gentle, steady-cruising affair that uses a simple spread of sounds impeccably. "To La Luna" is a feistier concern with its acid touches and punchy rhythm section, but it's still sliding in at an easy tempo to keep things steady without the need for peak time fireworks.
