Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Trelik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Review: There's a feeling with Sound Stream records akin to supping on a cup of tea after a long hard winter day, so perfectly pitched and satisfying is his approach to making house music. On "Julie's Theme", there's some unabashed delay rippling going on, but still that ever-loving disco groove sits underneath in the bassline on the one and the natural hand claps. On the flip, the disco is thoroughly loud and proud, with "Inferno" resplendent in searing Philly strings and slinky bass that was built for grooving. Once again, Sound Stream has delivered a simple but meaningful demonstration of house music perfection.

Review: Well, here's something to raise the spirits: a first new 12" from Frank Timm's Sound Stream alias for three years. Those familiar with the German producer's work will know exactly what to expect, namely delicious disco house cut-ups that turn selected loops from largely forgotten gems into insatiable dancefloor gold. A-side "Bass Affairs" is particularly good, delivering a perfect blend of sun-kissed Brazilian guitars, rubbery slap bass loops and lilting Rhodes chords (all accompanied, of course, by thunderous kick drums). There's a more traditional disco-house feel about the filter-heavy "Sweep Magic", while "Starstrike" is a throbbing, stripped back affair that makes great use of looped-up bass guitars.

Review: After a debut release that got plenty of people talking, Heels & Souls now serve up a reissue 12". It explores the work of Frankfurt's under the radar production trio Manfred Holz, Michael Buchner and Jurgen Blomke who work under two different names here. The EP is a real treasure trove of gold for deep diggers, with obscure synth and electro disco flavours on the 80s tinged ''Steal It An Deal It'.' It comes as two different versions and both are hugely characterful. 'Amazonia' that draws on dreamy Italo house and Balearic bliss bout beats for a new age trip that is first class.

Review: Italian DJ and producer Sourires is next up on the Samosa label with a new EP that marks a fine debut outing. 'Pampasosa' (De Gama Re-Groove) sure is an accomplished house cut with live drums and jazzy melodies, plenty of loose percussive lines and expressive hooks. 'Liam' slips into a loopy disco-house groove that will have the good times flowing freely with its irresistible sense of fun and happiness and 'Keep Rolling' (De Gama Re-Groove) is another filtered and loopy cut to prop up the party. 'Flavor' is a deeper house shaker with plenty of early US influences and great vocal.

Review: Saint Wax reaches release number five and does so by signing up two emerging Italian talents in Sourires. They show a real understanding of deep house dynamics here across four warming cuts. 'Kick Back To The World' has soulful chords rolling under an equally heart-melting vocal and 'Les Jeux Sont Faits' then gets more playful with some great guitar riffs and diva vocals. 'Next Day' is a jumbled funk house workout with terrific samples and 'Our Love' then pumps the party with some big horns and nice dusty grooves that come with plenty of Latin and Afro overtones.

Review: Many within the deep house community felt a profound sense of loss at the passing of Mike Huckaby in 2020. Among them was Cork-based duo Southbound Sounds, whose new EP pays tribute to the Motor City legend. Snippets of Huckaby's voice, plucked from a variety of sources, are scattered across title track 'Educator', a superb slab of Detroit futurism-influenced deep house brilliance rich in melancholic motifs, tactile synth bass, bittersweet chords and rolling beats. John Daly remixes, giving the track more of a beatdown swing while retaining the bassline and poignant musical elements from the pair's original mix. Elsewhere, 'Keep It Movin' is a sumptuous, dancefloor ready deep house soundscape underpinned by swinging machine drums, while 'Upstairs' is a dubby, pleasingly electronic deep house throb-job.

Review: Slow Motion Records welcomes Ma Spaventi for more of that dusty analogue deep house loveliness that he is so well known for. The Italian-born, Dutch-based sound engineer always gets the most of out his machines and that's clear from the off again here: 'Tornero' starts with delicate tumbling arps and slow, heavy drums. 'Non Ce L'Hai Solo Tu' (Spaventi Dazzurro Twist mix) has popping 808s and talk box vocals with subtle flashes of acid and fizzing chords. There's a disco feel to the cosmic melodies of 'Dreaming Egyptus' and 'Costa Brava' has more bubbling arps and gurgling acid lines to get you moving and grooving.

Review: been four years since Chicago producer Andres "Specter" Ordonez pitched up on Theo Parrish's Sound Signature label with the smoky, bleep-laden killer "Pipe Bomb". Here, he returns to the Detroit veteran's imprint, bringing with him three more slabs of fuzzy analogue oddness. "The Gooch" is the real killer, a 10-minute freakout that sounds like a jazz band making murky techno with just analogue machinery to play with - all wonky electronics, subtle acid and loose but relentless cymbals. The bolder "Zodiak" impresses with its 303-driven aggression, while "Body Blow" sounds like Hieroglyphic Being jamming with Buddy Miles. On Mars. That's gotta be good, right?

Next up is another house don, this time from Chicago: Specter can really go wild with his rhythms and raw textures as shown on EPs for Theo Parrish's label, but here he starts off with something soulful, dusty round the edges and deep. 'Putazo' then finds him embracing the occult with edgy and glassy synth lines zipping about more turbulent groves. 'Run The Course' is a grinding and mechanical groove of the sort he does so well, then 'Humble Pie' is all fizzing lo-fi synths and scuzzy drums patterns.

Review: Sound Signature are at it again with their dark, driving and jackin' grooves. Every time Theo Parrish decides a tune is worth pressing up nice and loud on vinyl, it's wise to pay attention. And so it proves here, with Chicago native Spekter dropping one-sided 12" "Pipe Bomb", a deadly and pounding excursion into the murkier corners of house music. It's not one for the faint hearted either, as an overwhelming sense of moodiness pushes ever forward, dripping in twisted samples and heavy techno kicks.

Timeless reworks of Paul St. Hilaire & Rhauder's now classic 2018 release 'Reconstructed', featuring legendary producers such as Rominimal heroes Amorf who provide a typically hypnotic reinterpretation of Control, Dutch minimal house maestro Ion Ludwig retains the dubby elements of the original on his rework of 'Stabilized' and likewise Steve O'Sullivan remains in glacial and cavernous territory on another sublime perspective of 'Control'. Elsewhere, Thomas Melchior serves up a typically arcane venture into the deep on his version of 'Dim Dim', while the much missed Soulphiction provides the perfect majestic backdrop for St. Hilaire's amazing vocals play centre stage on his version of 'Redeem'.

Review: The genius of the Star B project lies in the club-ready fusion of Stefano Miele AKA Riva Starr's inherent party-starting intent and the restless energy of Mark Broom's techno roots. The project's first outing, 2020's 'Gotta Have You', was an excitable disco-house-meets-techno affair, and this belated sequel is similarly formed. Full to bursting with scintillating stabs crafted from disco samples, thumping beats, sampled party atmos, hazy spoken word snippets and restless walking bass, 'Love Will Remain' sounds like a retro-futurist peak-time anthem in the making. They flip the script on 'I've Got Joy', peppering a sweat-soaked, bottom-heavy groove with effects-laden female vocal samples and nagging organ stabs.

Review: Ohio duo Stash Magnetic (AKA Nick Riggio and Rebecca Magnetic) have previously caught the ear of Adrian Sherwood. Here they make their debut on Al Mackenzie and Chris Kentish's Field of Dreams Recordings imprint via a typically hazy, slow-motion fusion of pitched-down, mind-altering machine beats, bubbly synthesizer lines, moody chords, gnarled electric guitar solos and Magnetic's dystopian lead vocals. The duo's atmospheric and apocalyptic original mix comes backed by a trio of tasty reworks. To our ears, the standout revision comes from Richard Sen, who adds a little drug chug, a chunky synth-bassline and a number of suitably spooky musical touches. We'd also recommend Dan Wainwright's Dub, which sounds like a post-punk-era Adrian Sherwood revision of a glassy-eyed synth-pop jam.

Review: Cosmic Rhythm hits a quarter of a century of releases here with a beautiful blend of jazz, deep house, Italo and Balearic styles on this new State of Soul EP. 'Madrugada' is lush, soft around the edges deep house with a warm and gooey heart. 'Instant Dream' has a more strident and dynamic groove but is again doused in glorious chords while 'Sun Empire' has more expressive synths that twist and turn through a night sky over silvery tech drums. 'Submerge' closes with liquid grooves and jazz-lounge keys that exude sheer class.

Review: Candi Staton's gospel-fired "Hallelujah Anyway" has a long and complex history. Over the years it has appeared in countless different forms, with this Glitterbox edition pairing two 2012 reworks with a couple of fresh rubs. In the latter category you'll find a deliciously bouncy and loved-up interpretation from Dr Packer that sounds like a late '80s Frankie Knuckles remix, and a "Classic Club Vibe" version by Moplen that dips the tempo and doffs a cap to early '90s New Jersey garage and gospel-house. Also worth a listen is Frankie Knuckles' luscious 2012 "Directors Cut Signature Praise" version, while there's also a fresh airing of Larse's chugging and dreamy deep house take.
