Review: Before Omar-S became a global cult hero amongst the underground house and techno community, there was Oasis - a collaborative project with fellow Detroit producer Shadow Ray that spawned two full-length albums of deep, stripped-back Motor City grooves. This timely reissue offers an expanded version of their 2004 debut set, Oasis Collaborating. Given that it was Alex "Omar" Smith's first attempt at an album it's pretty impressive, offering a hypnotic, otherworldly mix of cuts that icily flits between stone-cold drum tracks, droning ambience, mildly aloof club workouts and glistening, space age techno. This edition also includes three previously unreleased cuts, including two 2011 remakes that bring the originals bang up to date.

  9. Mr Fingers - "Survivor"
  10. Georgia Anne Muldrow - "Always"
Review: Sassy J is a spellbinding selector, who imbues her sets with a relaxed kind of spirituality that you can jam to. As such she makes a wonderful choice to compile this new collection on Rush Hour, which travels through a rich tapestry of grooves from the tender and funky to the electrically charged and feisty. The cast of characters is huge, from 2000Black's magisterial broken beat to Nu Era's dazzling techno, Mr Fingers in an especially mellow mode and Georgina Ann Muldrow's captivating soul. Everything's bound together by effervescent musicality and a cool mood it's all too easy to sink into, like all the best Sassy J sets.

Review: Given the steady stream of singles he's served up in recent times, it may surprise a few to find that "Open Too Close" is Will Saul's first album release for 14 years, and only his second overall. Given the time that has elapsed, it's perhaps unsurprising that it's a more mature, adventurous and eclectic set than its predecessor, with Saul taking the opportunity to turn his hand to fluid, Floating Points style deep house ("Freya's Theme", "Openings"), dreamy breakbeat driven lusciousness ("Room 9"), NYC freestyle ("My Left Sock", "Visions"), sleazy late night '90s house revivalism ("Moorings", which reminded us of very early Basement Jaxx), synthesizer-driven aural positivity ("Submerge") and hard-to-pigeonhole dancefloor haziness ("Get Back Up").

Review: With the new Inside Out series, Aus Music is aiming to blur the boundaries between traditional artist albums and DJ mix compilations, primarily by asking chosen selectors to showcase their music and that of their close musical companions. To show how the series works, Aus Music chief Will Saul has handled this first edition, serving up a mix of previously unreleased music from his extended friendship circle that moves from woozy ambience and dewy-eyed downtempo electronica, to melodious techno and fizzing, electro-inspired broken beat jams, via a range of deep, atmospheric and rhythmically intriguing workouts. With the likes of Falty DL, Pearson Sound, Mr Beatnick, Lone and Move D contributing tracks, the quality threshold is impressively high throughout, with Saul's fluid mix sparkling from start to finish.

Review: It's been three years since Session Victim's last album, the rather fine "Listen To Your Heart" on Delusions of Grandeur, so this fourth full-length excursion is definitely well overdue. As you'd expect, the music contained in it is as warm, musically rich and intricately detailed as ever, though there are fewer nods to disco, boogie and Balearica than we've come to expect. Instead, they've delivered a smoky, atmospheric and intoxicating collection of cuts that attractively shimmies between drowsy late night house, dreamy electronica, jazz-fired downtempo jams, dusty breakbeat shufflers and the kind of stoned, ultra-deep fare that used to get showcased on F Communications' ace "Mega Soft Office" compilations back in the 2000s.

Review: Daniel Straneus and Falk Shakarchi are Studio Barnhus originals. While they've not put out anything on the Swedish imprint since 2012, they were responsible for the much admired label's second ever release way back in 2010. Given this history, it's perhaps unsurprising that their amusingly titled debut album, Steal Chickens From Men and the Future From God, sounds a little like a CD-length distillation of all that makes Studio Barnhus such an exciting label. Quirky and eccentric from start to finish, it features cut-up MPC loop jams nestling side by side with woozy, deep disco-house shufflers, skewed homemade reggae riddims, glassy-eyed ambient and sample-heavy Balearic house workouts. It's the sort of album that won't just make you tap your toes, nod your head and wiggle your hips, but also put a goofy smile on your face.

Review: Despite being one of London's premier dancefloor-focused fusionists of the last two decades, Simbad Stanislas has not released very many albums. In fact, "Collections" is only the soul and jazz loving producer's second full length outing, with his first, "Supersonic Revolution", dropping way back in 2007. This, then, is a long overdue excursion. It contains tracks recorded (but for the most part never released) between 2003 and 2017, and includes collaborations with a wide range of vocalists and fellow producers. Musically, it's as vibrant and addictive as you'd expect, delivering tracks that effortlessly join the dots between soul, hip-hop, jazz, broken beat, jazz-funk, deep house, two-step garage and much more besides.

Review: An integral figure on the Motor City scene for the best part of two decades, Specter has always been a particularly prolific producer. Built To Last - appearing on Theo Parrish's significant Sound Signature label - is his first album-length excursion. It offers an expansive summary of his inspirations and influences - many will notice subtle nods towards local deep house, techno and electro heroes, as well as more experimental synthesizer music, off-kilter electronic jazz-funk, deep space dub and eyeliner-clad early '80s synth-wave - while also showcasing a trademark sound that's every bit as dusty, warm, loose and lo-fi as his lauded Detroit peers.

Review: Zanzibar born, Sheffield-based vocalist Mim Suleiman presents her fifth album on the ever reliable Running Back imprint - and is produced by legend Maurice Fulton. Ultra-modern African music merges with pop, house and disco, while lyrics sung in Swahili deal with a variety of sentimental themes. Suleiman has been described as "Mama Africa of the modern era" and is in fine form on "Si Bure": from the spiritual life music of "Aruka" and "Na Mia", to the uplifting soulful house vibe of "Usiogope" or "Kuemenora" - which are geared for some evocative moments on the dancefloor. We're also loving the powerful techno beats of "Haki" which provide an intense backing for Suliman's powerful vocal delivery as well as lo-slung boogie "Wewe" and the Animal Collective vibes of "Patosha", where Suleiman's celestial voice calls out over a wide open plain.

Review: There was much excitement when Pink Eye, Maurice Fulton's first album under the Syclops album for five years, first appeared online last month. In typical fashion, Fulton hadn't let anyone know it was coming. As with some of his other projects, it's now available on physical formats via German titans Running Back. As with previous Syclops albums, it's wonderfully bonkers and hard to pigeonhole, with the Sheffield-based Chicagoan combining mind-altering electronics, skewed drums, riotous analogue grooves and cheery piano and synthesizer motifs in a variety of hugely impressive ways. There are naturally some suitably filthy club workouts present - check the intergalactic madness of "Sarah's E Is Back", the druggy, afro-tech romp that is "Spin Cycle" and the sub-heavy insanity of "Kelly Is On Her C" - alongside loved-up compositions and productions that indulge Fulton's less discussed often overlooked jazz influences.
