Lovin' Me (12")
Cat: SITU 012. Rel: 12 Jul 17
  1. Lovin' Me (dubtribe Soundsystem remix) (10:43)
  2. Lovin' Me (Harley & Muscle remix) (7:45)
  3. Lovin' Me (BitterSuite remix) (7:04)
Review: Third time around for BRS's deep house classic "Lovin' Me", which first appeared on Dubtribe Sound System's Imperial Dub imprint way back at the turn of the millennium. Speaking of Dubtribe, the San Francisco duo's brilliant remix - a near perfect fusion of Idjuts style, delay-laden percussion hits, dub disco bass, echoing vocal samples and rich chords - takes pride of place on the A-side of this Situationism reissue. Flip to the B-side to wallow in the slick and sumptuous late night soulfulness of Harley & Muscle's overlooked 2006 rework. Speaking of soul, check the brilliant positivity of Bitasuite's remix (taken from the same '06 Peng reissue), which effortlessly joins the dots between British deep house, modern soul and New Jersey garage. Essential.

  1. Ventos Do Outono (Pat Van Dyke remix)
  2. Ventos Do Outono
  3. Ventos Do Outono (Kirk Degiorgio remix)
Review: Bruno E has plenty of history in the field of future jazz and downtempo, and now he's been snapped up by D3 to deliver some of that cold-chilling lounge business with some interesting remixers on board. Pat Van Dyke is up first, creating a blissful version of "Ventos De Outono" that feels as cosy as a warm fire and a glass of whisky on an autumn evening. The original version of the track is actually a peppier affair with a broken beat lilt that wouldn't sound out of place alongside the Dego and Kaidi Tatham crew. Kirk Degiorgio is a natural fit for another remix given his jazzy roots, and his swirling techno treatment is the perfection lotion to pour over Bruno E's excellent original ingredients.

  4. Ugly Frankie - "Your Ears Look Great" (6:46)
Review: Vinyl Only reach their seventh release with a fresh grip of lesser known producers bringing high grade grooves to the table. Bubbadog opens the 12" up in a woozy fashion with the warbling piano chords of "Goin' Round", capturing a time-slip mood that carries through to the dusty jazz soaked beat down of Minus The Majors' "Strole On Through". On the B-side, Alex Zuiev gets into an exotic, chiming, 80s-inflected mood on "Down By The River", creating a slow-burning dancefloor heater out of classic ingredients. Ugly Frankie finishes the EP off with the stripped down funk of "Your Ears Look Great".

Review: Deep house magician Fred Buddah steps out of Roots Go Deep catalogue and lands on the young Urban Imagery label with five pensive house nuggets from the soul. "Untitled Earth 1" and "Untitled Earth 2" remind us of Fred P's moodier output, that interstellar atmospheric sound really shining through in the mix, while "Good Kush" is a tame acid bumper with another eerie set of sonics surrounding it. "Untitled Earth 3" is a masterfully muffled slo-mo jam, and "Black Scientist" ties things off with a broken, distorted chunk of percussion. This one has to be a big tip, people!

  4. Graffiti Moves (5:14)
Review: Salon Des Amateurs' Bufiman makes his Dekmantel debut with two left-of-centre, broken beat mind-melters. "Peace Moves" is a lo-fi, almost sludgy dive into a synth swamp where flurries of cosmic synth licks swoon and tease above your heard. "Graffiti Moves" takes an even trippier twist over a similarly low-and-slow drum arrangement but with added sparkling percussion. Throw in two cutlass-sharp versions of and you've got yourself a watertight declaration of peace. Absurdly on-point as always from Dekmantel.

  4. Ghost Song (Boo Williams Chicago Ghost mix) (6:27)
Review: This EP offers a double dose of debuts, with both Bugsy (a hotly tipped Milanese DJ/producer) and Astroloop making their bows. They begin with "Svegsy", an impressively deep, woozy and fluid concoction that peppers a loose, percussion-rich deep house groove with hazy chords, tactile synth bass and a vocal sample once utilized by acid house sort Armando. Elsewhere, "New Vision" sees them wrap a chunky, analogue-rich bassline and rhythm track with spacey electronics and "Ghost Song" is a quietly soulful trip into rolling, ultra-deep house. Boo Williams steps up to remix the latter track, serving up a superb interpretation that sounds like a trippy tribute to Omar S's more electronic moments with added synthesizer solos.

  4. She Left In Spring
Review: Anyone that indulged in The Overlord, Willie Burns The Trilogy Tapes debut back in 2012, will attest that the creative stars seem to align when the WT Records founder chooses to work with his British namesake Bankhead. That four track release featured some of the most memorable and diverse music committed to wax by Burnett under his Willie Burns alias, and was made all the more special by some of Bankhead's best sleeve art in our opinion. The two Williams pair up once more for the Tab Of Acid 12" and it challenges Burnett's TTT debut in the excellence stakes. The title track is akin to travelling in a time machine to 4am on a Saturday night in Den Haag circa 1994 - real grotty basement acid techno! Providing contrast in a way Burnett does so well, the B-side offers two tracks of a more immersive nature, with "She Left In Spring" an exercise in dubby techno as pensive as the title would suggest.

  1. Light It Up (11:29)
  2. Dimmer Switch (10:35)
Review: Scott Fraser and Timothy J Fairplay's Crimes Of The Future label has had quite the banner year, ushering in various projects from the pair as well as seeking out like-minded contemporaries such as Perseus Traxx. The latest Crimes of the Future release introduces Bulb, another project bearing the label founder's finger prints along with a high profile third colluder in one William Burnett. Apparently laid down at WT Records HQ in the spring of 2014 whilst Fairplay and Fraser were committing Crimes in NYC, Bulb is a bold offering from the trio with two extended dancefloor workouts taking a side each. "Light It Up" pairs ghetto techno breaks with something from wayward Kosmiche studio experiments in deepest Germany, whilst "Dimmer Switch" plunges into a world of psychedelia and cavernous cave dwellings thanks to some dark ambient synthesis and stabbing drums.

  2. Non Stop (Lula Circus remix)
  3. Non Stop (Chubby Dubz remix)
  4. Non Stop (club dub)
Review: Twin brothers Rheji and Rhano Burrell made a name for themselves in the nascent American house scene of the late '80s and early '90s. The duo appeared on Virgin, including Virgin's 10 Records sub-label and the seminal Nu Groove imprint. In 2001 they featured on Michael Moog's DJ EP (Moog producing as Resonance), while a decade later Rush Hour released a widely acclaimed Burrell Brothers retrospective. Danse Club is a new label rehashing forgotten club tracks, so far remodelling tracks by Cherie Lee, Michael Whitehead and 95 North. The Burrell edition sees "Non Stop" receives four distinctly different mixes, from the funked out and slamming grooves of the Chubby Dubz remix, to the slightly tech house interpretations of the Just Be Insomniac and Lula Circus mixes. The retro club dub closes the EP for something more traditional, with beefy bass pulses cutting through the mix.

  4. Cocoa Powder (7:43)
Review: On this groovy and entertaining 12", Stassy welcomes sometime Elephant Moon producer Lee Burton to Taverna Tracks for the first time. Burton's brand of deep house - musically rich and melodious, but with suitably bumping beats - is a perfect fit with the Berlin-based label's previous output. There's much to admire throughout, from the ultra-deep and spacey shuffle of "Circadian Rhythm", to the UK garage influenced deep space bounce of "Cocoa Powder". Best of all, though, is opener "Horizontal Falls", where sun-blushed synth motifs and dreamy, head-in-the-clouds chords are accompanied by an undulating bassline and skipping, US garage inspired drums.

  4. SSDP (6:50)
Review: Since going solo last year, former Onra collaborator Byron Blaylock has yet to put a foot wrong. Each successive 12" has brought with it a swathe of killer new jams straddling the blurred lines between soul, jazz, hip-hop, deep house and jazz-funk. There's more of the same on Leaving This Planet, the Alabama-raised producer's first EP for the mighty Eglo. So while opener "Song for a Friend" is a superior, jazz-flecked deep house bumper smothered in killer electric piano solos, the track that follows, "Mind, Body & Soul" is a squelchy tech-jazz masterpiece. It's the same story on the flip, as floor-friendly jazz-breaks ("Blow Your Mind") make way for a heady trip into intergalactic jazz-funk territory ("SSDP"). As the worn-out old saying goes, this is "all killer, no filler".

Review: Eles bells, this new Vietnam-established/Manchester-based label aren't messing around. Following a remarkable debut from Cottam and their last V/A EP "Ha N?i Nights" comes another impeccable four track sample-based bounty: Byron The Aquarius delivers a hip-hop tickled chugger laced with jazzy twists in the form of "Planet Rock", Cozy Bear gets his bassline wiggle on to some spry off-beat percussion with "Nudi Riddim" while Glenn Davis's "Holdin" preaches nothing but pure gospel. Finally we close with the soothing pads and lightly brushed jack of "Fade" from a mysterious producer who remains nameless. A sublime journey on the highway to Ele.

  4. DJ Aakmael - "Transit" (5:58)
Review: Given that Croatia's Dimensions Festival is one of the most consistently on-point electronic music events around, it figures that their new off-shoot label should regularly hit the spot, too. Certainly, the early signs are good. This second sampler single impresses from start to finish. Occasional L.I.E.S artist Marcos Cabral kicks things off with a fine chunk of fluid, underwater deep house ("Prochainement"), before Byron The Aquarius reaches for the talkbox on the sumptuously deep, soulful, jazz-funk influenced house bliss of "Full Moon". Lady Blaktronika gets things going on side B with the groovy, late night Detroit deep house bump of "Can We Still Be Friends". Arguably best of all, though, is the dreamy, jammed-out analogue deep house warmth of DJ Akmael's "Transit".

Review: Calm's "Shining of Life", a nu-jazz era fusion of soulful U.S house influences, jazzy instrumentation and life-affirming goodtime vibes, first appeared in stores way back in 2004. Here the Japanese producer has chosen to revisit his noughties classic, serving up a brand new "2017 Full Moon Mix" that pushes the track's gospel style vocals, fluid pianos, mazy synths and tasty, disco-influenced grooves to the fore. It's a superb revision, all told, and arguably even better than the near peerless original. On the flip you'll find an unreleased version from the archives that sounds like some long lost Frankie Knuckles remix - all expansive, eyes-closed piano solos, tactile synth bass and unfussy Chicago house beats.

  1. A Broken Man (redux)
  2. Deep Affection
Review: Carbon Chic, a native of Minneapolis, delivers a high-impact redux on a soulful kick for the A-Side. While for the B-Side, a deep and cozy after-hours excursion effortlessly begins. Two tracks at home both on the dancefloor and in your space.

Beyond The Speaker invites Carbon Chic for the label's sophomore release after Legowelt and Willie Burns shared the successful label debut, Angels Against Dust. With A Broken Man, Beyond The Speaker expands its horizons by committing new talent to wax, furthering the label's vinyl expedition.

Carefully mastered by Alek Stark, A Broken Man in 'Redux' form does not compromise; upping the tension between burrowing bass, satisfying beat and vocal machinations. On the flipside, Deep Affection offers a more comforting assortment of synthetic melody and late night warmth while maintaining a firm dancefloor footing with gently rolling hihats topping everything off.

  3. Dharma (5:04)
  4. Moment (5:38)
Review: Arguably no producer made a greater contribution to the Italian dream house sound - that most loved-up of deep house sub-genres - than Don Carlos, AKA Carlo Troja. If you need proof, then we advise checking out this collection of overlooked gems hand-picked by Echovelt Records. Opener "Inspiration" (taken from 2001's The Music On My Mind LP but reminiscent of his early '90s work) and closer "Moment" are both pure distillations of the colourful, sauced-eyed ethos of dream house. "Ambient Underground" - one of three selections from 1993's Aqua - is more tech-tinged and hypnotic, despite the presence of a spine-tingling breakdown, while "Dharma" is closer to his New Jersey-inspired work with Stefano Tirone under the Montego Bay alias.

Review: Long serving Irish producer Derek Carr continues to enjoy a resurgent career following his appearances on For Those That Knoe, now stepping up to Love Notes for some of his most effervescent house jams to date. "Sidewinder" is a sprightly, Detroit indebted house workout pitched at peak time, while "Stepping Out" trips into classically informed techno for the back room crowd. "Search For Intelligence" is a great example of how to execute sweet natured electro, and "Indigo" ditches the kicks to twirl into more of that Motor City flavoured machine soul magic for the mind.

Review: Romanian imprint Why So Seris have previously served up great work by homegrown heroes such as Nu Zau, Lumieux, Sublee and Lizz so it is quite a surprise that Irishman Derek Carr makes his mark on Why So Series 004. Known by the label as a prolific and outstanding producer when it comes to dancefloor oriented techno and tech house influenced tracks, they are more than happy to present Derek's Liquid industries EP. Starting off with the loopy and hypnotic deep house of "Theta" he then gets stuck into some vintage hi-tech soul on the energetic Solar Storm".
