Alternative Faction (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: LVNO 15. Rel: 18 Jun 18
  1. Alternative Faction
  2. That Time Of Year
  3. New Mission
Review: Casey Tucker is on a roll at the moment, and his infectious brand of uplifting, full-fat machine soul seems to have struck a chord in many places (not least via his reissues on For Those That Knoe). After appearing on Love Notes back in 2015, Tucker's back on the label with another salvo of colourful, charming and utterly magnificent house jams shot through with the inventive programming of techno. "Alternative Faction" is many things - a bubbly acid track, a swooning deep house cut and a sassy broken beat affair - and yet feels utterly smooth in its execution. "That Time Of Year" has plenty of Motor City soul feeding into its composition, not least in the gorgeous synth strings, and "New Mission" gets busy in the swing with all kinds of bouncing melodies and rhythms.

KNOE 2/4 (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Inner Strength
  2. Terraform
  3. Waiting Game
Review: For Those That Knoe are back with another wedge of dusted down delights from Casey Tucker, a hidden treasure of the mid 90s that nearly got away. Fortunately his effervescent machine soul jams have found a new lease of life with these reissues, and this fourth installment comes from a freshly unearthed box of DATs that pushes Tucker's story even further. "Inner Strength" is a pumped up shot of dynamic techno in the classic sense of the word, mysterious but hopeful, tough but sensitive. "Terraform," which previously aired on a long-deleted 12" from the 90s, takes things skywards with an unabashedly positive tone to the dense layers of synths and box beats. "Waiting Game" rounds the EP out on a wistful, acid-drenched tip - let's hope there's more jams of this quality to come from the Tucker archives.

  2. TRUTHS (6:46)
  3. Carden Eden (5:47)
  4. RUTHS (5:47)
Review: Frankfurt's retro house auteur Philip Lauer is an unstoppable force it seems. There is conclusive evidence of this from the results of Underground House Research Vol 2, his latest Tuff City Kids 12" alongside Gerd Janson. The first track sets the scene well: "Potion No 4" is a spooky cut reminiscent of late eighties Jamie Principle; not a bad thing! It's overall a darker vibe than usual from Lauer on this release which we find so curious, as the sombre and rusty groove of "TRUTHS" confirms. On the flip "Carden Eden" is funky and its infectious groove supported by analogue pan pipes in minor, is just plain wicked, but just wait until that vocal loop kicks in. Finally "RUTHS" is classic Tuff City Kids; uplifting hands in the air business; a forgotten house classic that sounds like it's recorded straight from the tape it was found on.

  2. Tell Me (Joe Goddard remix) (6:12)
  3. R-Mancer (Roman Flugel Happy Gerdy remix) (7:48)
Review: Lauer and Gerd Janson aka Tuff City kids emerged with "Tell Me" featuring Hot Chip's Joe Goddard on vocals back in late 2016 on Permanent Vacation, but now it's time for the remixes and they're pretty sweet on this EP; if we do say so ourselves. Hamburg's finest Tensnake is in fine form as always with his rendtion: a tropical nu-disco explosion! Joe Goddard himself chips in too with a makeover of the track; his one getting some emotive Kompakt vibes going on full of rich and life affirming synths leads happening. After all, he has recently collaboarated with Michael Mayer. Finally on the flip they save the best for last with the mighty Roman Fluegel delivering the "Happy Gerdy remix" which very uplifting indeed.

Review: S3A and Poon welcome Italian vibe maestro Tommy Garofalo to SAAAR for an lavish six-piece soiree. Dusted with more of his dreamy jazzy signature he's been developing on labels such as Local Talk and G.A.M.M. Flexing from the squidgy mild acid disco funk of "Atmos" to the lolloping double bass jacks and warped strings and pianos of "TSOS" by way of the woozy aquatic synths and sensual soul whirls of "OrangePeelSkin" and far-out deep dream desert jazz ("The Deepest"), this is Turbojazz's most accomplished and generous EP to date. Review: The latest 12" from the Fuck Reality camp is an all-star affair, featuring collaborations between Tel Aviv twosome T.v.out, and Hamburg duo Smallpeople (AKA Julius Steinhoff and Just von Ahlfeld). With such talent on display, it's perhaps unsurprising that lead cut "Sailor Desperados" - an energy-packed romp full of undulating acid lines, fizzing hi-hats and relentless stabs - is particularly inspired. Quintessentials regular Borrowed Identity turns that cut into a deep acid shuffler, before the core quartet returns to round things off with the woozy, bass-heavy, late night deep house grooves of "Shadow Quest".

Takes Tomah (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: 000. Rel: 05 Jun 18
  1. Track 1 (6:36)
  2. Track 2 (6:55)
Review: This tasty 12" sees Italian crate diggers Twice and Volcov each have a go at reworking a 1979 jazz-funk workout from one of krautrock's lesser-celebrated outfits. The original - which, in case you fancy looking it up, isn't actually called "Tomah" - is a brilliant fusion of Brazilian influenced rhythms, sparring electric piano solos and relentless bass. Twice's A-side version maintains the essence of the original, expertly rearranging and extending the various solos to create a mind-altering chunk of breathless dancefloor bliss. Volcov takes a slightly different approach on the flip, turning it into a rolling samba-house groover complete with fluttering clarinet solos. Both versions are superb, and sound like summer anthems in the making.

Review: For 07 Ruff Draft enlists Twins who turns in a dark, dystopian, club sound scape that hits all the right spots. Hayworth is another alias of a well known producer to us Ruff Drafters, here he creates a track with an intro that teases and teases you before the beat drops and things get all sweaty. Cottam digs out some acid from the hard drive, an old forgotten about track that finally gets a release.

  2. Tony Hayers (dub) (6:01)
Review: Hold tight for a shocking, rare discovery from the dusty vaults of a forgotten 90s breakbeat house outfit's MiniDisc archives. The two tracks that make up the repertoire of the Two Bad Jews crew are steeped in the wistful optimism of the good old days - they just don't make them like this any more. "Holland Memory" rolls on a measured use of a break and a simple chord sequence that could melt on for days, plus there's space for the odd cheeky sample to remind you of the unpretentious era these tracks herald from. "Tony Hayers (dub)" meanwhile ups the DX7 funk with a rollicking house cut that would sit right with any true deep house head who wants a little UK attitude in their soul stew.

  2. Down The Street
  3. You Are My Groove
Review: The Two Diggers project has been steadily increasing in productivity since first emerging in 2015, and now it makes the move to Jack's House Recordings with this no-nonsense three-tracker. "Head Trip" keeps things simple but utterly effective with a crisp beat, subby bassline and catchy lead arpeggio, while "Down The Street" takes a groovier, albeit equally stripped back, approach. "You Are My Groove" spreads itself across the B-side with a brighter disposition that lets warm and soulful samples slip in between the classic house rhythms. If you're looking for straight-up jams that will do the business on the floor, look no further.

  1. Make It Right (6:22)
  2. Make It Right (Jason Fine Astral Travelling remix) (6:03)
Review: This release is reminiscent of the very best of 90s deep house. Luke Harney has brought together a heavyweight collaborative team here, which includes Lewis Wright on vibraphone and the seminal guitar player Miles James. It's this dynamic interplay which makes "Right" such a stand out track, as James' strutting guitar plays out over a powerful bass and jazzy key tinkling leads the listener to a spine chill-inducing break down. US producer Jason Fine has been tasked with the remix and he does a fine job, making the drums slightly heavier and adding in some eerie synths, but it's hard to beat the beautiful original track.

Review: A pioneer for the hip house scene in Chicago back in the 80s, Tyree is still at it thirty years later and sounding as vital as ever. This collaboration with Pure God is a thoroughly different concern to the jacking acid of the early days, bringing a live drum sound, funk bass and even a stirring string lilt into the mix on "Back Home". Whether you plump for the full vocal mix or the stripped back instrumental, it's an anthemic party starting beast of a jam for peak time maneuvers. The "Alternative Mix" of "Back Home" on the B-side is a more classic, throbbing slice of mechanical minimalism for the traditional Chicago jackers out there, and there's some "Bonus Beats" thrown in for good measure too!

Review: The Chicago Vinyl series continues to act as a vessel for ever more essential club tackle from the one and only Tyree Cooper. On this occasion he's collaborating with celebrated vocalist Isis and the legendary Adonis for this absolutely storming tribute to the heritage of Chicago house music. The original "Passin Thru The House" is a consummate jack track, shouting out all the right names and letting the 707 fills rip through the groove. Tyree then offers up three alternate mixes of the track, from the bugging "Vocal Mix" to the uplifting melodious form of the "Vocal Soul Remix." There's an instrumental version tacked on if you need it, but it's all about Isis' killer vocal on this 12".

Review: Entrepot Records is a Brussels based imprint, founded in 2014 by UC Beatz - who some of you may know from his Underluxxe digital label The idea here is simple: to release raw house beats on wax. For their eighth edition the label chez himself takes on duties, with some fine slo-mo house grooves - perfectly suited to late summer nights. The A side features the lo-slung boogie down vibes of "Rainbows", but the real dancefloor burners belong to the flipside. The looped-up disco inferno "Playground" is covered in just the right amount of dust and grit that would make Phil Weeks stand up and notice, while the sultry "Nocturne" is a crafty edit of a fine vintage track that's rather familiar indeed.

Review: After popping up on a various artists release last year, Ugly Frankie makes good on his connection to the Vinyl Only label with a full fat EP of chunked up, funked out house business for sunny climes. There's a dusty, rolling tone to the tracks on offer here - the crafty edits, nimble sample treatment and inventive layering creates a vibe you can lose yourself in all day. These aren't just straight up dancefloor rollers either - "Cow Boogie" bumps and slides with a low slung swagger that will have you popping at a slower tempo - but they're all prime for the get down. Review: For their fifth release, Ultra Knites welcome a new family member to the label - Turkish producer Ugur Project. Kicking off proceedings on the A side, "Feeling Deep" is a combination of traditional deep vibes, rolling basslines and subtle vocal snippets. "Works On Dope" truly lives up to the name of this EP with its sultry yet groovy feeling that radiates when it is played - reminiscent of the light , simple, yet also fierce feeling of house music of the early-mid 90's. On the flip, "Wanna Be" is a track reminiscent of the legendary Eddie Perez/Mentalinstrum combined with strong soulful vocals which will remind the biggest house junkies of the likes of Loleatta Holloway and such. "Detroit Groovin", with its thumping bass and simple yet effective chords really give it that real, raw Detroit feeling. In summary, this release shows quality on all fronts and is brought to you on 180g 12" vinyl.

Review: Trawl through Glenn Underground's vast discography and you'll frequently come across sought-after gems ripe for the reissue treatment. That appears to be what Italian reissue specialists Groove Records has done. GU Archives first appeared back in 2000, and bundled two hard-to-find tracks from the acclaimed Love & Hurt triple-album with the (then) previously unreleased "HardTymes" (a particularly breezy, jazzy, sun-kissed and musically rich chunk of bossa-house blessed with some particularly special vibraphone style solos). 18 years on, the EP has lost none of its sparkle, with the "Elle"-goes-Chicago deep warmth of "Stringing Me" and impeccably spacey and shimmering "Storm Raiders (Tribute to Larry Heard)" standing out. Simply essential.

  2. Hi-Tech Soul (9:28)
Review: Italian reissue experts Groovin continue to explore the vast vaults of outspoken Chicago house veteran Glenn Underground. The two tracks here are, naturally, both sought-after and obscure. On the A-side you'll find "Escuchame", a cut that originally appeared on a DJ Deep mix back in 2010. It's something of a driving, body-rocking beast, with the Windy City stalwart wrapping a jazzy electric piano riff (slightly reminiscent of Black Science Orchestra's "Save Us" and Lil' Louis' "French Kiss") and spacey synth flourishes around a thrusting drum machine rhythm and booming bass. Turn to the flip for the melodious and spacey deep house classic that is "Hi-Tech Soul", a previously digital-only track first released way back in 2008.

Review: For their latest deep dive into the world of hard-to-find house classics, Italy's Groove Records take us back to 1996. "House Music Will Never Die" marked Glenn Underground's first collaboration with vocalist Cei-Bei (AKA Curtis Harman) and has long been considered one of the Chicagoan producer's finest releases. Wisely, Groove has decided against tinkering with a classic, instead serving up all four mixes from the original Cajual Records 12". Choose between the classic deep house soul of the GU Cei-Bei Foot Mix, the wonderfully summery, jazz guitar-laden CVO Bismark Hotel Mix, Mark Grant's brilliantly evocative, stretched-out interpretation, and a killer Afro Dub that makes great use of a heavy analogue bassline. All four versions are top notch.

Review: With a title such as 808 Sessions, you'd expect this latest missive from reliable Chicago veteran Glenn Underground to be built around the weighty analogue beats of Roland's classic TR-808 drum machine. While that's the case, it's actually his use of TB-303 "acid" lines that catches the ear. They come to the forefront on A-side "Acid Jazz", where wiggly motifs, cascading melody lines and reverb-laden Rhodes chords ride a hybrid deep house/beatbox electro groove. It's superb, all told, though the stripped back "Acid Dubbb" B-side - a raw, TB-303 heavy interpretation of the A-side shorn of GU's usual deep house niceties - is arguably even better.

Review: We're very happy to see a renewed interest in Underground Resistance sub-label Happy Records: which is sure known for its fair share of house classics. Quite fitting then that the chief retrovert Gerd Janson over at Running Back saw it fit to issue some remixes of the classic "Sunshine" by Unit 2 aka Raphael Merriweathers Jr. and Niko Marks. KiNK's remix on the A side is a nice modern revision of the track which retains those uplifting trademark pianos but adds some of his thunderous trademark 909 drum machine workouts beneath. On the flip, lo-slung disco pranksters Tiger & Woods do a remix which cuts up and stutters those said pianos (and the vocals) to interesting effect plus adding some nice boompty swagger into it.

Review: Berlin dwelling Los Angeleno Urulu is back on another EP chock full off smooth deep house grooves after releases on Exploited, Dirt Crew and Let's Play House. "Night Tube" is rolling late night business with rusty rhythms and some serious rumble in the bass. "Orion" is a real highlight on this release; the kind of sultry, summery and feel-good house music reminiscent of John Beltran's excursions in house music. On the flip is the rusty retro business of "9045XY " which is pretty nice and closing things out with another Beltran influenced number on the emotive high-tech soul of "Lullaby".

Review: Dreamy deep house's Mr Reliable, Taylor Freels, pops up on Kalahari Oyster Cult with a four-track missive packed full of evocative, otherworldly productions. In keeping with the label's dreamy, retro-futurist approach, opener "Transworld" fixes the hip-house era breakbeats of early UK house with the tactile melodiousness of vintage Italian dream house. The track that follows, the even more luscious "Precinct 9", wraps a crunchy, broken house rhythm in 6am ambient chords and bubbling electronics, while B-side opener "Groove Therapy" proudly wears its UK garage influences while continuing to soothe and comfort. As a bonus, like-minded Canadian Ex-Terrestrial remixes "Precinct 9", serving up a sublime version bristling with audible nods to vintage Detroit techno and bass-heavy UK bleep business.
