  1. Time & Space (11:43)
  2. Bass To Love (11:37)
Review: Chicago house legend Ron Trent still has the magic touch. It's getting close to thirty years since his first releases began trickling out of the second generation of the Windy City's house scene, but the producer and DJ still knows how to lay down the utter truth. "Time & Space" is a classic Trent joint, where the spark is lit thanks to warm glow of dubby beats accompanied by sweet, mesmerising licks of instruments floating in mid-air. "Bass To Love" is as gentle and moving, but the sounds linger towards the higher end of the tune, where driving pads fuse gracefully with cascading synth solos to form a thick and wide-eyed wall of house for the deeper end of the DJ spectrum.

  1. Kinky City (10:18)
  2. Omi Tutu (10:28)
Review: The arrival of fresh material from Prescription co-founder Ron Trent is always cause for celebration. Happily, this new two track missive from the Chicago deep house legend more than delivers on its promise. A-side "Kinky City" is as melodious and musically rich as you'd expect, with Trent layering evocative vocals, spacey chords, tumbling synth-strings and bubbly electronic motifs on top of a snappy, analogue drum machine groove. He shows off his impeccable piano playing skills on the warm, rich and soulful flipside cut "Omi Tutu", which boasts slightly more organic sounding drum hits and a bassline that evokes memories of "Sueno Latino" and other similarly minded Italian dream house gems.

  4. Like Heaven (feat Niko Marks - vocal mix) (6:01)
Review: In the Internet age, it's remarkable that Finnish producer Trevor Deep Jr. has managed to retain his long-guarded anonymity. While mystery sometimes sells, it's the quality of his releases that keeps deep house heads coming back for more. On this 12", he's called in a few favours. King Shorty and Sven Weisemann lend a hand on the impeccably smoky, head-in-the-clouds brilliance of "Cosmos Dub", with the latter also providing a typically dreamy, deep and dubbed out take on title track "Like Heaven". His version largely omits Niko Marks emotion-rich vocal, which naturally takes more prominence on Deep's accompanying Vocal Mix. The fluid deep house lusciousness of "Prince of Helsinki" completes an excellent package.

  3. Lights Go Out
Review: The prolific Finnish production powerhouse Trevor Deep Jr is back, this time landing on We Play The Music We Love with an urgent collection of machine-made techno delights for all times of the night. Lapien's remix of "Lights Go Out" is the perfect starting point for this EP, riding on thrumming acid bass and haunting pads with a rock solid beat thundering away in the middle. "#dub4 (Tape Mix)" meanwhile ploughs a much deeper furrow into, as you might well have guessed, dub techno, but that's just a foil for the powerful thrust of the original version of "Lights Go Out" which spreads itself across the whole B-side.

  1. Dem Jump
  2. Eyes Closed
  3. Beyond Us
Review: It's been a good 12 months since a Trinidadian Deep release, and two years since his last EP for Neroli. Here he returns to the Italian label with another trio of tracks rich in musicality and dreamy, spine-tingling depth. Opener "Dem Jump" sets the tone, delivering a saucer-eyed take on Mood Hut style new age house built around bossa-influenced drums and peppered with delicious marimba melodies. There's more of a traditional US deep house bump to the similarly dreamy "Eyes Closed" - all tactile chords and twinkling piano solos - while "Beyond Us" layers sun-bright synth melodies over a dense, bongo-laden rhythm. All three tracks are magical in their own way, as you might expect from someone of Trinidadian Deep's pedigree.

  1. NorthernLi
  2. In The Beginning
Review: Trinidadian Deep is an artist you can count on for the kind of inventive, well-travelled deep house that reaches beyond the conventional to deliver something truly spiritual. Coming to light on D3 Elements, this latest joint from the Ron Trent family member is everything you look for in higher plain house music. "NorthernLi" has a sprightly feel to it, all pattering percussion and synth stabs that could almost come from Carl Craig in the More Songs About Food... era. "In The Beginning" has a heavier feel to it, letting thick pads and keys swirl in the mix without losing that soulful, uplifting quality that makes Trinidadian Deep jams so infectious.

Want You EP (100 gram transparent vinyl 12")
Cat: HANDSOFF 005. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. Want You (12:41)
  2. Father (8:30)
Review: As something of a protege of Ron Trent, Trinidadian Deep has constantly excelled in infusing a traditional deep house sound with a broader palette that draws on African and Latin rhythms while ever focused on a warm, soulful end result. He's the latest artist to sign up to Hands Off, coming on direct and unfussy with this soothing balm of a two tracker. "Want You" is classic Trini, stirring up hazy lead lines over tumbling percussion for an endlessly flowing masterclass in deep house. "Father" meanwhile takes a brighter approach with its playful piano out front and sharper drum palette.

Review: Trindadian Deep was initially schooled by deep house legend Ron Trent, before casting out on his own. Native EP V is his second 12" of the year for regular home Neroli. As you might expect, it's full of musically rich deep house explorations that don't try too hard for attention. A-side "Native Rebel" is particularly beguiling, with stretched out organ lines tumbling over cosmic synth riffs and deep, layered, organic sounding percussion. On the flip you'll find the Larry Heard-meets-Kaidi Tatham lusciousness of "Native Bruk", followed by the fluttering synth solos, loose-but-dense percussion and killer chord progressions of "Native Uprising".

  1. Native Revolution (8:15)
  2. Native Tribe (8:10)
Review: Real proper deep stuff from one of the true heroes of the Underground. Toronto hero Trinidadian Deep can always be counted on to deliver the real proper deep stuff. While labels like 'deep-house' get bandied about so filiipantly these days, this guy is keeping the true spirit of the sound alive - and he is the very definition of it, in our humble opinion. Life affirming, evocative and bittersweet are just some of the words that come to mind when trying to describe the melancholic urban blues of "Native Revolution" - it's just typical 'Trini' really: doing what he does so well! With its roaring church organs and those shimmering Ron Trent (his cousin, by the way) style chord progressions, backed by sweltering steel drums - it's awe-inspiring. Speaking of the steel drums, those powerful rhythms take more of central role on the flip, with another 'version' of sorts in the form of "Native Tribe".

  4. Trinidadian Deep & Lars Bartkuhn - "The Parish" (dub) (4:32)
Review: Given that Ron Trent was once his musical mentor, it's perhaps unsurprising that Trinidadian Deep is capable of producing spellbinding spiritual deep house. His former mentor's influence can be heard within the layered African percussion, lilting synthesizer melodies and spacey riffs of "Native Palo", the opening track from the New York-based producer's latest EP. There's no doubt that Trent would also love the Osunlade style beats, drowsy chords and steel drum solos of "The People". On the flip, "Trini Deep" joins forces with like-minded deep house stalwart Lars Bartkuhn for two passes of "The Parish". There's the "Full Experience" mix, an organic, warm and enveloping chunk of deep house bliss smothered in syntheszier and piano solos, and a trippy, percussion-rich late night "Dub".

  4. Will Lister - "Something Else" (4:51)
Review: For their sixth release, London's ANMA present two of the finest talents in deep house at present. With the exception of Joe Claussell or Ron Trent - no one quite does spiritual deep house music like Toronto's Trinidadian Deep. It's no surprise when you discover that he's the cousin of the latter, with several releases on his esteemed Future Vision, in addition to top labels Neroli, Shelter and Yoruba. His contributions on the A side of this release are "Touch It" an evocative expression in deepness and the near tribal moments of "Love Song". On the flip, it is over to London's Will Lister who had a great debut on Phonica last year. From the lush and hypnotic tones of late night drifter "Changes In Light" to the drowsy galloping slo-mo vibe of "Something Else", he proves he too is one to watch moving forward in 2018.

Review: Utilising the skills he learned mixing tracks for the likes of Pole and Pantha Du Prince, Kassian Troyer delivers his new EP, Stills, on Dial. The record opens with the sumptuous title track, featuring beautifully shuffling hi-hats and a subtle yet mesmerising synth progression. "The Afternoon Grid" offers more of the same, gently building a dazzling listening experience that delivers sheer aural serenity. "Breezy" takes things a bit deeper, and slightly darker, moving the rhythm with a swelling bass line accompanied by the distinct shuffle of stripped down garage aesthetics. "Hunter" slows everything down, closing out the record as blissfully as it began; Troyer using the tempo to open up masses of space and filling it with delicate, sparkling house.

Review: The seemingly bottomless vaults of Vibraphone Records come up with the goods once again as The True Underground Sound Of Rome present a second instalment of their seminal Minimal Vision. The mood is instantly dreamy on "Cyclops", while "Vertigo" gets more than a little psychedelic, dare we say New Age-y. This tone rings true throughout the record, pulling together more sought after gems and previously unreleased delights from the catalogue of this vitally influential Italian house music force. Just try listening to "Once Upon A Time In Labaro" without being transported to another time and place, all proto-trance synth pulses and Blade Runner samples.

Review: Trux' second EP on Berlin based record label Office is a bow to the many outstanding moments in the history of Ambient music. Allusions to Brian Eno are just as recognisable as to the charming concepts of Pop Ambient or Clicks & Cuts. It's between these poles that the four tracks on the a-side oscillate and manage to capture the listener with vibrant and diverse soundscapes. The flip side sees Trux drop a stunning melodic breakbeat tune besides remixes by Workshop's premier Techno chef Lowtec as well as a freestyle Electronica version by O$VMV$M. The much loved Super Quiet tops the record artwork off with another remarkable example of his casual and airy black and white photography.

  3. New Mission
Review: Casey Tucker is on a roll at the moment, and his infectious brand of uplifting, full-fat machine soul seems to have struck a chord in many places (not least via his reissues on For Those That Knoe). After appearing on Love Notes back in 2015, Tucker's back on the label with another salvo of colourful, charming and utterly magnificent house jams shot through with the inventive programming of techno. "Alternative Faction" is many things - a bubbly acid track, a swooning deep house cut and a sassy broken beat affair - and yet feels utterly smooth in its execution. "That Time Of Year" has plenty of Motor City soul feeding into its composition, not least in the gorgeous synth strings, and "New Mission" gets busy in the swing with all kinds of bouncing melodies and rhythms.

  1. Inner Strength

  3. Waiting Game
Review: For Those That Knoe are back with another wedge of dusted down delights from Casey Tucker, a hidden treasure of the mid 90s that nearly got away. Fortunately his effervescent machine soul jams have found a new lease of life with these reissues, and this fourth installment comes from a freshly unearthed box of DATs that pushes Tucker's story even further. "Inner Strength" is a pumped up shot of dynamic techno in the classic sense of the word, mysterious but hopeful, tough but sensitive. "Terraform," which previously aired on a long-deleted 12" from the 90s, takes things skywards with an unabashedly positive tone to the dense layers of synths and box beats. "Waiting Game" rounds the EP out on a wistful, acid-drenched tip - let's hope there's more jams of this quality to come from the Tucker archives.

  4. RUTHS (5:47)
Review: Frankfurt's retro house auteur Philip Lauer is an unstoppable force it seems. There is conclusive evidence of this from the results of Underground House Research Vol 2, his latest Tuff City Kids 12" alongside Gerd Janson. The first track sets the scene well: "Potion No 4" is a spooky cut reminiscent of late eighties Jamie Principle; not a bad thing! It's overall a darker vibe than usual from Lauer on this release which we find so curious, as the sombre and rusty groove of "TRUTHS" confirms. On the flip "Carden Eden" is funky and its infectious groove supported by analogue pan pipes in minor, is just plain wicked, but just wait until that vocal loop kicks in. Finally "RUTHS" is classic Tuff City Kids; uplifting hands in the air business; a forgotten house classic that sounds like it's recorded straight from the tape it was found on.

Review: Lauer and Gerd Janson aka Tuff City kids emerged with "Tell Me" featuring Hot Chip's Joe Goddard on vocals back in late 2016 on Permanent Vacation, but now it's time for the remixes and they're pretty sweet on this EP; if we do say so ourselves. Hamburg's finest Tensnake is in fine form as always with his rendtion: a tropical nu-disco explosion! Joe Goddard himself chips in too with a makeover of the track; his one getting some emotive Kompakt vibes going on full of rich and life affirming synths leads happening. After all, he has recently collaboarated with Michael Mayer. Finally on the flip they save the best for last with the mighty Roman Fluegel delivering the "Happy Gerdy remix" which very uplifting indeed.

With such talent on display, it's perhaps unsurprising that lead cut "Sailor Desperados" - an energy-packed romp full of undulating acid lines, fizzing hi-hats and relentless stabs - is particularly inspired. Quintessentials regular Borrowed Identity turns that cut into a deep acid shuffler, before the core quartet returns to round things off with the woozy, bass-heavy, late night deep house grooves of "Shadow Quest".

  1. Track 1 (6:36)

Review: This tasty 12" sees Italian crate diggers Twice and Volcov each have a go at reworking a 1979 jazz-funk workout from one of krautrock's lesser-celebrated outfits. The original - which, in case you fancy looking it up, isn't actually called "Tomah" - is a brilliant fusion of Brazilian influenced rhythms, sparring electric piano solos and relentless bass. Twice's A-side version maintains the essence of the original, expertly rearranging and extending the various solos to create a mind-altering chunk of breathless dancefloor bliss. Volcov takes a slightly different approach on the flip, turning it into a rolling samba-house groover complete with fluttering clarinet solos. Both versions are superb, and sound like summer anthems in the making.

Hayworth is another alias of a well known producer to us Ruff Drafters, here he creates a track with an intro that teases and teases you before the beat drops and things get all sweaty. Cottam digs out some acid from the hard drive, an old forgotten about track that finally gets a release.

Review: Hold tight for a shocking, rare discovery from the dusty vaults of a forgotten 90s breakbeat house outfit's MiniDisc archives. The two tracks that make up the repertoire of the Two Bad Jews crew are steeped in the wistful optimism of the good old days - they just don't make them like this any more. "Holland Memory" rolls on a measured use of a break and a simple chord sequence that could melt on for days, plus there's space for the odd cheeky sample to remind you of the unpretentious era these tracks herald from. "Tony Hayers (dub)" meanwhile ups the DX7 funk with a rollicking house cut that would sit right with any true deep house head who wants a little UK attitude in their soul stew.

Review: The Two Diggers project has been steadily increasing in productivity since first emerging in 2015, and now it makes the move to Jack's House Recordings with this no-nonsense three-tracker. "Head Trip" keeps things simple but utterly effective with a crisp beat, subby bassline and catchy lead arpeggio, while "Down The Street" takes a groovier, albeit equally stripped back, approach. "You Are My Groove" spreads itself across the B-side with a brighter disposition that lets warm and soulful samples slip in between the classic house rhythms. If you're looking for straight-up jams that will do the business on the floor, look no further.

  1. Make It Right (6:22)
  2. Make It Right (Jason Fine Astral Travelling remix) (6:03)
Review: This release is reminiscent of the very best of 90s deep house. Luke Harney has brought together a heavyweight collaborative team here, which includes Lewis Wright on vibraphone and the seminal guitar player Miles James. It's this dynamic interplay which makes "Right" such a stand out track, as James' strutting guitar plays out over a powerful bass and jazzy key tinkling leads the listener to a spine chill-inducing break down. US producer Jason Fine has been tasked with the remix and he does a fine job, making the drums slightly heavier and adding in some eerie synths, but it's hard to beat the beautiful original track.

Da Soul Revival Vol 3 (180 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Of Love Mystery
  2. Kan U Feel It
Review: "Of Love Mystery" is taken from the Da Soul Revival EP released on Dancemania Records in 1995. Here's another one of Tyree's most sought after tracks. It has that classic four to floor bodyjacking Dancemania Ghetto House sound, with a touch of that Chicago innocence to it. On Side B "Kan U Feel It" was originally released in 1998 on Nepenta Records UK. Well, If you like phat beats and thick basslines, then this track is for you. It reminds of those early releases in the 80's on DJ International Records or Trax Records, where the groove was the most important factor.
