FH 06 (12")
Cat: FH 06. Rel: 06 Jun 16
  1. Track 1 (7:14)
  2. Track 2 (5:48)
  3. Track 3 (7:24)
  4. Track 4 (5:32)
Review: David "Spargel-Tazan" Joseph makes his first appearance on Finest Hour, showcasing a quartet of loose, jazzy, distorted and spaced-out deep house cuts. He begins with the Recloose-sampling, Theo Parrish style swing of "Track 1", where starlight keys and rich chords mingle with shuffling rhythms and occasional bongo patterns. "Track 2" is a trackier concoction with broken tape melodies and densely layered percussion, while "Track 3" is as attractively breezy as a seaside stroll on a sunny day. Finally, he does is best Pepe Bradock impression on the glitchy and humid "Track 4", which is undeniably the deepest of the four cuts.

  3. Mezigue - "Il Faudra Remercier Pierre" (6:04)
  4. Lo Life - "Ill At Delphia" (Raw mix) (3:30)
Review: The first two releases on Folamour's FHUO label boasted headline-grabbing tracks from the hyped French producer. On release number three he's decided to showcase the work of other like-minded producers instead. Newcomer St Paul kicks things off with the sparkling, boogie-era disco-house cheeriness of "Tonight With You Baby", before Madcat serves up an ear-pleasing chunk of disco-funk/jazz-funk/deep house fusion (the pleasingly percussive "Quarter Century"). Over on side two, Mezigue brilliantly fixes attractive, spaced-out synth lines to a high-tempo rhythm track (think ghetto-house meets Detroit techno, and you're close) before Lo Life gets in full-on orchestral trip-hop mode on the brilliantly produced "Ill at Delphia (Raw Mix)".

  5. The Finishing (Powel remix) (6:09)
  6. The Finishing (Viken Arman remix)
Review: Since this fine double-pack from Stavroz first appeared back in 2013, original copies have sold for eye-watering sums online. Happily, Delicieuse Musique has responded to demand by serving up this re-press. The title track - a lazy, hazy and instinctively summery fusion of shuffling deep house drums, rich chords and life-affirming plucked Spanish guitar solos - is something of a contemporary Balearic house classic, and comes accompanied by two chunkier, club-ready reworks. On the second 12" you'll find the brilliant, softly-spun, sunset-friendly jazz-house epic "The Finishing", which may be worth the entrance fee on its own. Powel's sweet, string-laden deep house remix of the same cut is brilliant, too.

Review: Now striking volume eight in his highly collectable floor-firing self-titled white label style series, Paris' Steaw gets his classical jack on with three more thumping machine-made numbers. "Holding Back" is raw, visceral and pounding, "Last Flight" is an energetic uplift track with nuances of Detroit lurking deep in the mix while "10 PM" closes on a 2020 style tip, all lucid, warm and molten but subtly pumping. Another perfect addition to the series.

  2. Ortella - "Dope Noise"
  3. Steaward - "Track 1"
  4. Steaward - "Track 2"
Review: Here, one-time Local Talk and Qualmoto Records regular DJ Steaw dons his Steaward alias for a second selection of acid-flecked deep house and Detroit techno jams. This time, he's joined by a couple of other producers, who contribute impressive cuts to the A-side. There's a fluid feel to the twittering synths and late night atmospherics of Ortella's "Dope Noise", which belies the track's pumping techno rhythms. Ka-One 7 St-Sene's "Aceed Two" is similarly enjoyable, with rough 303 lines riding pounding drums and hazy chords. Steaw takes a more straightforward deep house route on his two contributions, with the sweaty and decidedly fuzzy "Track 2" outgunning the more cultured "Track 1" in the "best track" stakes.

  4. Green Therapy (Luis remix) (4:57)
Review: The ninth edition of Wake Up! catches modular magician Steevio in an introverted mood. Over three tracks, the Freerotation co-founder showcases a different side to his music persona on these hypnotic and graceful excursions through the deeper side of the techno and house. First up we have got "Machlud" which sets the mood of the EP perfectly; sorrowful and barely-there, before moving to the more nervous lounging of "Forgotten Futures." On the flip, "Green Therapy" is more intense, bouncing with 'a lightly kinetic swing'. Luis' remix wrings some raw pathos from the original's immaculate depths. Yet it remains of a piece with the source material, rounding out an EP of heady and ephemeral moments.

Rain (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: MOJUBA 022. Rel: 07 Jan 15
  1. Rain
  2. Ahead
  3. Process Of Decay
Review: Japanese producer Ken "Stereociti" Sumitani has been a regular contributor to Don Williams' Mojuba label since 2009. Rain, though, is his first single for the imprint since 2012, and his first outing of any sort for a year. Predictably he's in fine form, attempting to go deeper than many would think humanly possible. The title track - blessed with samples of raindrops falling on a window - is particularly delicious, with Sumitani layering soft electronics and alien melodies over a locked-in, Detroit-influenced deep house groove. The more percussive and undeniably bass-heavy "Ahead", which comes with just a whisper of ragged acid - is, if anything, even deeper. Neither, though, can hold a candle to "Process of Decay", a deep tech-house shuffler that sounds like it was recorded several kilometres below the floor of the world's deepest ocean.

Review: Steven BC has been busy carving out his own niche in the underground over the past year, primarily on the Shall Not Fade label. House Crime were quick to pick up on the distinctive qualities in his lo-fi, pumped up sound and following on from an appearance on House Crime Vol. 1. BC is back with a whopping great double pack of killer jams from the wild side of the outboard brigade. "Drive Over" has a nagging lead line that will turn heads despite its stark simplicity, while "Between The Sheets" plays with boogie tropes and makes them sound delightfully off kilter. Start to finish it's a collection of wondefully grubby but utterly fresh jams.

Review: Stephan Laubner is a productive sort. It's not long since he delivered the impressive At Disconnected Moments full-length for Smallville - or, for that matter, a pair of impressive 12" singles for Lick My Deck and Echochord - but he continues to churn out the hits. This expansive EP for his own Something imprint touches on many of his usual themes, casually flitting between spooky ambience ("LSS Recording"), hazy dub techno ("Intergalactic Quannum Web"), and curiously imaginative, off-kilter deep house (the woozy chug, humid melodies and dub techno textures of stand-out "Monkey Island"). He's also included an impressive trio of loops for DJs to play with, which veer from manic ghetto-glitch ("Loop 1"), to Casio-ware techno ("Loop 3"), via blazed hip-hop ("Loop 2").

  3. Lawrence - "Dawn 808" (8:40)
  4. Christopher Rau - "RG En El Casa" (5:33)
Review: This year, Smallville Records is celebrating a decade in the game with the Smallville Ways compilation. This second, sampler 12" boasts a quartet of cuts from that set. The prolific Stephan "STL" Laubner kicks things off, going deep into dub techno/deep house fusion territory with the ricocheting chords, delay-laden hits and suitably bass-heavy groove of "Leaving Peaceful". Tilman Tausenfruend's "A Man Under The Influence" is a woozy, fluid delight - think clicking percussion, watery chords and smooth bass - while Lawrence's "Dawn 808" perfectly captures the sapped energy and hazy sunlight of an early morning session of outdoor dancing. Best of all, though, is Christopher Rau's "RG En El Casa", where skittish, soft touch beats provide the perfect foil for the producer's melancholic chords and yearning melodies.

Review: Another year another Story and just in time, thank goodness! Following up a great one by New York City's James Duncan in 2015, this year's edition comes courtesy of a yet unnamed producer taking up the reins. But it's business as usual here on this deep and trippy collection of soulful KDJ inspired house jams. On the A side we've got the smoky "2" that grooves along with a simple rusty drum pattern accompanied by smooth clarinet and Rhodes elements, followed by the dirty analogue bounce of "Nothing Stays The Same". On the flip, there's the sexy late night mood lighting of "Freakin' It"; loved how stripped back and emotive this one was was. Finally "Raw Meat" takes it all the way home in slo-mo style, with those James Brown samples atop making a nice touch.

They serve up some acid jazz and broken beat style numbers, which will appeal to fans of early Mark De Clive Lowe or Atjazz. From the chill vibe of "Dirty High" which is so emotive, through to the uptempo "Con Moto" which throws in a bit of Detroit style melody, dusty deep house beats and creamy Rhodes keys for added measure. Closing out the impressive EP is the super sultry "Lucidity".

Starting out with Swedish expat Adam Stromstedt, who is on fire at the moment with releases on Bristol's Banoffee Pies and his own Lyssna imprint. Here he presents the dusty uptempo groove of "NTHNG" featuring sombre orchestral strings that create a sombre backdrop for his skittering rhythms and rolling bassline. Next up, t.hanks presents the jacking NYC house stylings of "Reschs", the title dedicated to another Sydney icon; in this case it's best brand of beer! On the flip is Subaske with the woozy and hypnotic broken beat house of "Moving Between Worlds".

  1. In The Groove

  3. From The Pyramids To The Stars
  4. Industrial Life
Review: A second release on D3 Elements for Raymond "RayDilla" Funnye aka Strong Souls, the man who kicked off the Detroit & Chicago focused label last year. Opener "In The Groove" has a loose and louche late night jazz vibe to its glowing chords and jumbled beats, whilst "Deep Sensation" is a sumptuous go slow delight with kick drums miles apart and golden chords and meandering synths draped over the top. On the flip, "From The Pyramids To The Stars" is an insular affair that pulls you right in; drums tumble with a tiny tribal tinge, pads are long tailed and the percussion is well defined, metallic and gently caresses your ears. Closer "Industrial Life" is the most dancefloor of the lot, with firm house kicks, a rugged bassline and beautifully designed little hooks dangling in mid air above.

Review: According to White Material pair Galcher Lustwerk and Alvin Aronson, their first collaborative album under the Studio OST alias contains a mix of "breezy electro, aquatic dub, high speed jit, and shimmering atmospherics". While clearly tongue-in-cheek, it's a fairly accurate description. Certainly, there's a fluidity, moodiness and palpable sense of atmosphere at the heart of Scenes, which casually drifts between hard-edged club workouts, hazy post-club fare and dreamy, horizontal experiments. It was apparently recorded over a three-year period, during jam sessions at various New York studios. It's the spontaneous aspect of its' creation that has the biggest effect, and makes the whole thing feel like fleeting snapshots of moments in time.

Now the duo are back with more goodies from their Studio OST project, and once again the fusion between gossamer threads of melody and delicately crafted machine rhythms is evident throughout this 12". "Eventide" comes as a full blown track and a sumptuous beatless version, while "Ascension" has a dubby original and useful drums-only cut, making this record both functional and an absolute delight to listen to.

Review: Followers of Jordan Czamanski's Off Minor label will have already entered the mythical land known as Stump Valley and come out the other side craving more music from the mysterious production outfit. Solace is now available in the form of Echoes To The Enemies Of Time, a three track 12" from Stump Valley for the ever excellent No 'Label' operation run by Rush Hour's distribution branch. There's plenty of house music released every week (some might say too much) but you can't deny the class and personality present in tracks such as "The Visitors" which effortlessly careens from restraint to unbridled machine funk chaos. The flip sees the pair in looser form with the kaleidoscopic new age delights of "Galaxy 999" complemented by a self styled Drum Rave remix from MTRPLS (who may or may not be a production alter ego of Stump Valley)

Review: Subb An is the next in line for the Blind Box Series, bringing some of his most outwardly stripped down styles to date to the label. "Push" still packs a serious punch, but it's peppered with all kinds of head-twisting details to keep the all-day-all-night party crowd shuffling along to their hearts content. Dana Ruh does a killer job of remixing the track, turning it into a blissful groover that pivots around a woozy pad tone in its quest for deep house perfection. "Indulge" sports a little more of that Subb An punch, which then gets chiseled back into the curious tones of the Blind Box Remix.

Review: Hot on the heels of his "Love Shy" EP comes another touching deep house escape from Adelaide-based Subjoi. "Flashing Lights" takes the lead with a divine sample that warps and lilts softly but persistently as the beats gradually increase insistency. Elsewhere "Glowworm" lives up to its name with its broken drum rolls and soft introspective groove, "Closer" plays the consummate cosmic warm-up groove while "Dash" races to the finish line with a thumping sense of triumph aided and abetted by some tasteful flute work. Joious.

  4. Ricky Razu - "Moonlight Jam" (4:48)
Review: Inaugurating new American imprint 13th Hour is Subjoi, an electronic music producer from Adelaide, Australia who has had releases on Heart To Heart and House In Motion. He appears on the A side with the sultry, late night deep house of "Make Me", plus the thumping and adrenalised acid jack of "Doin' Fine". Ricky Razu out of Belgium is one of the new breed of house producers quickly making name for himself on labels like Slav, Houseum and OOUkfunkyOO. He serves up a couple of classic house inspired perspectives here - they are definitely dressed to impress. From the sultry and evocative mood lighting of "Reaching Out" (which is vocal house exactly the way you like it) or the bittersweet deepness of "Moonlight Jam" closing out the EP in delightful fashion.

  3. Artisanal Acid (Reclaimed edit) (5:25)
  4. Know How It Feels (5:25)
Review: Following choice wares from tape_hiss and Pascal Viscardi, Love Notes stride into winter with a fulsome offering from lesser-known artist Subtenant, who packs just the right balance of classic acid and modernist techno into the three original tracks on this 12". "Evergreen Soul" looks set to turn heads in the club with its playful organ flex hopping around the punchy 303 notes, while "Artisanal Acid" brings some homespun hardware handiwork to the table. "Know How It Feels" drops in at a slower tempo, but it's D'Marc Cantu who steals the show with a dynamic remix of the title track loaded with detail and shot through with dub.
