5ive Years (5iVE YEARS HOLIC TRAX Edition 3) (180 gram transparent vinyl 12")
Cat: HT 025. Rel: 18 Sep 17
  1. 5ive Years
  2. Polyphony Six
  3. U’s Floppy Disk
  4. High Chee's
Review: Holic Trax label boss Tomoki Tamura continues his anniversary celebrations by presenting his own work on this third installment of 5ive Years. The title track is a deep and crafty tech house cut suited to more subtle, heads down moments, while "Polyphony Six" keeps things equally moody but fattens out the bass and warms up the lead lines. "U's Floppy Disk" is a more taut, wiry track with gruff drums and splashes of bleepy FX - the perfect tripped out club tool. "High Chee's" lightens the mood at the 11th hour with a more playful melodic line that should fine favour with all kinds of good time DJs.

Three Thousand Stars EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HT 020. Rel: 05 Sep 16
  1. Three Thousand Stars
  2. Three Thousand Dub
  3. Keypella 4 U
  4. Room 202
  5. Ny Bassworks (vinyl only)
Review: To mark the 20th release on essential house label Holic Trax, boss man Tomoki Tamura steps up wth his first solo outing on the imprint. Coming on vinyl and digital, one of the cuts is a sample for you to use on your own tracks that you can then fire back to the label.

Founded in 2012, this go-to label is run by London based Japanese DJ and producer Tomoki, who has A&Red some rock solid, no nonsense house music from artists like Mr G, Rick Wade, Tuccillo, Keita Sano and many other key talents. Now he impresses with four of his own firing cuts which will hopefully be the first of many.

The title track gets things underway with big flabby bass underpinning trippy synth details and loopy drums. It is a straight up house jam that is deep and driving, sprinkled with twinkling melody and will make a big impact in any set. An even more stripped back and direct dub version is included for those who like it deep and playful. The absorbing 'Keypella 4 U' is a spooky thirty-second synth sample that is fluid and cosmic, and can be used in your own music in anyway you like.
The creepy 'Room 202' is an atmospheric number with sci-fi sounds and deep space synths all unfolding over a machine drum line and forceful kicks. It is back room dancing dynamite that will make anyone sweat. Last but not least, standout vinyl only treat 'NY Bassworks' is a skipping, percussive house number with wonky sine waves and crisp hits all jacking you into a groove.

This is another faultless releases on Holic Trax that will win the boss and his label many new fans as a result.

Quiet Air Gun EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: 89GHOST 009. Rel: 10 Jul 17
  1. Quiet Air Gun (feat Moo)
  2. Foggy Jungle
  3. DSC House
  4. Stars In The Morning
Review: Nail's 89:Ghost label continues to march ahead with further musings on the mysterious creative realm between deep house and techno, which is a natural home for Tomoki Tamura. The Holic Trax boss man steps up with the solid four track Quiet Air Gun EP, and from the get go the quality is unmistakable. "Quiet Air Gun" is an alluring yet undeniably strange jam, with vocals from Moo only adding to the eerie, sensual tension. "Foggy Jungle" is more upfront with its tough beats n' bass exoskeleton, but between that scuffed combo there's ample room for subtle atmospheric touches as well. "DSC House" then brings the real peak time heat with its smoking samples and heavyweight rhythm section, but there's time for one more trip out with the sublime "Stars In The Morning".

Cat: LVNO 12. Rel: 30 Oct 17
  1. Jacob's Ladder
  2. Maspeth Ave
  3. Life As An Echo
  4. The Forests Of My Mind
Review: tape_hiss is a regular on Love Notes, having only recently dropped the excellent Cognitive Dissonance double pack. The Brooklyn based producer is back on the label with another four tracks of finest deep house for the club, kicking off with the emotive but peppy strains of "Jacob's Ladder" before drifting off into the calmer waters of "Maspeth Ave". "Life As An Echo" has an equally wistful ring to it, but don't be misled, this is still sturdy tackle for the dancefloor. "The Forests Of My Mind" finishes the EP off with a hazy trip through languorous pads and dusty drums for those tender moments of the night.

Review: Love Notes reach their tenth release with a double pack from label regular tape_hiss. Following on from two crucial 12"s that landed on the label last year, the Brooklyn artist steps up with eight cuts of purest heat that remind you just how much mileage there still is in no-nonsense hardware jams. There's a consistent mood of immersive, undulating house coursing throughout, with warm, punchy acid basslines offset by intricate percussion and dreamy pads that sit easy on the ears. "Folding Space" is a standout track with its delicate beats and refined lead lines, while "No Neck & Bad As Hell" brings a little electro bite into the mix, with stunning results.

  3. The Vivian Girls (Patrice Scott remix) (6:49)
  4. Realms Of The Unreal (5:51)
Review: Brooklyn's Love Notes label continues to strengthen its repertoire with a return offering from the rising San Francisco producer tape_hiss. Following on from the excellent Love Is A Dog From Hell 12" earlier in the year this new four track single presents yet more plush, heartfelt jams from the machine-based side of house music. If a reference point were needed, having Patrice Scott on board for a remix is a logical move, although the Detroit don's Latin-flavoured shakedown of "The Vivian Girls" is a spicy proposition compared to the soothing balm of the original. That's not to say tape_hiss doesn't like to throw it down, as the twitchy pulse of "Realms Of The Unreal" adeptly proves.

Review: Finest Hour co-boss returns to the party with four more fat stacks of dope, warm house grooves. Kicking off with a big bump and gradually easing down the vibe scale, "Horizons" opens up with a slinky robo-soul arrangement that's scantily clad in jazzy piano lace while "Gunkan" maintains the android jack with a little more restraint on the pads. Flip for two deeper jams as "Bitchplease" kicks with a cool broken beat shuffle and smoky textured dubby pads while "Preemo" winds us right down with slouching trip hop steez. No stones left unturned.

Alelle Fu (12")
Cat: FINA 016. Rel: 07 Jul 14
  1. Alelle Fu
  2. Olsen Mosaik
  3. Savant
  4. Straff Afo
Review: FINA Records returns with its sixteenth release this June, this time coming from German duo Tarron Trekka who offer up a four-track self-titled EP. Both Daniel Muller-Sachs and Andreas Kriester have been releasing material via the likes of Freude Am Tamzen, Brut! and Milnor Modern as Tarron Trekka since the late 2000's, and here find themselves snapped up for a single on the illustrious FINA imprint. "Alelle Fu" is some of the most joyfully strange house music we've heard in a while, it's copious filtering making the whole thing sound like a tightly coiled spring. The remaining three tracks are much more traditional, but offer the kind of late night deepness that will keep any basement dancefloor grooving into the small hours.

Yen Ara: Remixes Part 1 (hand-stamped 12")

  1. Krumandey (Ron Trent remix) (6:57)
  2. Mumudey Mumudey (Natureboy Flako remix) (4:38)
  3. Mumudey Mumudey (Nick The Record remix) (7:44)
Review: When a 12" turns up with a Ron Trent rework on the A-side, we tend to take notice. In this instance, we were particularly curious to hear what the deep house legend had done to "Krumandey", one of the standout cuts from Highlife legend Ebo Taylor's recent album, Yen Ara. Predictably, his version is superb, brilliantly joining the dots between Taylor's soaring Afro-beat, rolling Afro-house and Trent's own sumptuous deep house electronics. Turn to the flipside for two fresh revisions of "Mumduey Mumduey": a jaunty, sunshine-friendly tweak by Japanese producer Natureboy Flako and a heavy Afro-disco version by Nick The Record rich in bowel-bothering sub-bass and spacey deep house chords.

Review: Certain Circles come through with an utterly reliable set of tech-house pulverisers, and you can rest assured that you'll get your fill of boom-tiss with these four house nuggets. Tecture drop heavy 4/4 pounce surrounded by gnarly sonics on "Rebirth", whereas "Save Dezz Nuts" by Steve Martin is deeper, more low-key and a little eerie around the edges. Nick Beringer returns after his debut on 001 and drops a dubby floor joint by the name of "XQS", followed swiftly by Ed Herbst and the beat-heavy, percussion-minimalistic "Modern Melancholia".

  1. Come A Little Closer (6:03)
  2. Wazoo (6:16)
  3. Prototypical (5:27)
Review: Millionhands head honcho Tom Mangan is back as Tee Mango on Aus Music - this would be his third appearance on the label in less than a year - which speaks volumes really. EP#2 features the lo-slung sexiness of "Make It Last Forever" featuring that awesome Inner Life sample throughout. On the flip, we have the funky deep-disco bounce of "Wazoo" that's perfect mood lighting for the early evening, while something a bit more energetic and harder hitting exists in the form of "Prototypical". A soulful and emotive house journey featuring gritty rhythms, a tough bouncy bassline and trippy stabs that's perfect to take crowd into the later hours - we absolutely loved this one!

  3. The Rhythm (Drums 3) (6:55)
  4. Your Love (6:07)
Review: Here is the alter ego of Millionhands big cheese Tom Mangan. As Tee Mango he has had releases with Will Saul (and released on his Aus Music imprint earlier this year) and he's next up on Mad Mats & Tooli's Local Talk imprint. There's some splendid expressions in nu-jazz deepness on offer on the Dadhouse EP. Beginning with the emotive and chill groove of "Don't Worry Everything's Going To Be Alright" with some mad syncopated rhythms: hear the drummer get wicked! "Trying Times" is smooth and jazzy deep house reminiscent of classic Nick Holder with its smoky Rhodes. dusty rhythms and sexy soul vocals. On the flip, the reduced tribal-dub-DJ tool "The Rhythm" (Drums 3) was particularly impressive and reminded us of Kerri Chandler's more esoteric moments. Finally "Your Love" ends this fine EP on a bittersweet note on this Arthur Russell style jam.

Review: Edinburgh party people Lionoil Industries - a label and collective established by veteran local DJ/producer Percy Main - can usually be relied upon to deliver the goods. They've come up trumps again with this surprise single from fast-rising fellow Edinburgh resident Telfort. He begins with the sumptuous musicality of "Rooms For Speculation", where rubbery synth bass, clipped organ parts and Aqua Bassino style piano solos cluster around a jacking machine groove, before brilliantly working a hooky electric piano riff on deep house roller "Some Other Time". Turn to the flip for the breezily Balearic guitar chords and warm pianos of "Barberweed", not to mention the ultra-deep and drowsy shuffle of EP closer "Exploding Car".

Review: Following last year's launch release Lyon lotharios In Any Case deliver another easy-vibe serenade with five more deliciously deep grooves from house to hip-hop. The currently unavoidable Tell kick starts with a warm jack that conjures feels on a Parrish level while fellow Lyon artist GS2 gets grainy and choppy with his feather ruffling heads-down session and Malouane takes us deep underwater with a blurry loop mesmeriser. Elsewhere Manuel Nie really jazzes it out with a sparse, break-based intro before splashing into sedate Iz & Diz and style soft jacks and Ibn Sabaa returns to the label to close the show with a deviant wonky cosmic beat session "Stupid Loop". There's nothing stupid about any of this.

Review: In late 2016, Hamburg nu-disco hero Tensnake served up yet another irresistible lo-slung anthem in the form of "Freundchen" and here come some more killer renditions by a who's who of the scene at present. Bergerac's Red Rack 'Em is first up with a loopy tool version which distills the track into its true essence: a respectful edit, if you will. Tuff City Kid Phillip Lauer is up next and works his signature magic as always on this classic house styled version, which will take you back to the UK's second Summer of Love. Finally, on the flip we have got Moscow's Phil Gerus with a neon-lit boogie down version: which we actually thought was the EP's finest moment.

  4. Whodamanny - "Tell Me What" (Post Modern Jazz reinterpretation) (3:11)
Review: Compared to his usual bouncy house tempos, Japan's increasingly re-emerging house delight Soichi Terada is back with some slower fare, but it's no less steeped in nostalgic 90s sass. "Tell Me What" is quintessential Terada, beaming out positivity from every channel with its catchy piano hooks, keyboard stabs and funky-ass breakbeats. It's a wonderful surprise that the track in reverse is included on the 12" as well. For an added treat, Mystic Jungle Tribe affiliate Whodamanny takes control on the B-side with two distinct versions ranging from the plastic 80s disco funk of the first remix through to a more curious, off-kilter "Post Modern Jazz Reinterpretation".

Review: Pivotal proto house music from the Chicago motherland; Duane Thamm Jr's 1984 12" was revolutionary as he provided two killer transition pieces that would have been gold dust to DJs at the time. The titles explain themselves; A side jump track "125 BPM To 107 BPM" takes us from a euphoric Italo hook to a sultry smouldering vocal finale while B side jump track "111 BPM to 125 BPM" goes from theatrical and a little trippy to an all out disco explosion. Good transition tracks are still hard to find but this would have blown minds back in 1984. A serious piece of history right here.

Review: Sheffield's Thatmanmonkz returns with the Feels Trip To The District EP, where he teams up with his good pal Martin Miguel. The record is inspired by several trips to dope parties in the District of Columbia, home of the quickly rising label Better Listen Records. Starting off with the the lo-slung disco deepness of "Sweetiez Fresh", it's a dusty and looped up jam that will appeal to fans of the Robsoul sound. On the flip, things take a well funkier and more soulful turn with that familiar vocal on "The Assassinator" and finally things end on a groovy and sun kissed note with the slo-mo/hip-hop inspired boogie of "XDC". Real name Scott Moncrieff, he's appeared previously on a who's who of labels such as Delusions Of Grandeur, Kolour LTD and Classic in recent times.

Review: Following fine 2017 outings on G.A.M.M, Dirt Crew and Better Listen, Thatmanmonkz (AKA Shadeleaf Music co-founder Scott Moncrieff) returns to Classic for the first time in three years. "Ooh Wee" features an impassioned, stylish vocal from Nikki-O rising above a dusty, soul-fired deep house groove rich in loose, MPC style beats and low-slung electric bass. The tight and on-point remix package is headed up by SoulPhiction, who gets just the right balance between the fuzzy, classic-sounding instrumentation of Moncrieff's original version and his own locked-in, tech-tinged beats and electronics. Detroit Norm Talley excels on the flip, dishing up a jaunty, piano-tinged Motor City deep house version that niftily balances percussive energy and lo-fi tunefulness.

The Problem With George (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CY 014. Rel: 05 Feb 18
  1. Take Me Back (9:10)
  2. To La Luna (7:05)
Review: The Problem With George finds drum & bass producer George Levings of Commix embracing his deep house side alongside Endian, and they shore up on Cynic with a high grade EP of thoughtful cuts that should suit the warm up or run down perfectly. "Take Me Back" is a gentle, steady-cruising affair that uses a simple spread of sounds impeccably. "To La Luna" is a feistier concern with its acid touches and punchy rhythm section, but it's still sliding in at an easy tempo to keep things steady without the need for peak time fireworks.
