  1. Oyelo (6:29)
  2. Oyelo (Kay Suzuki By The Sea mix) (6:39)
  3. Oyelo (Kay Suzuki Drum dub) (6:21)
Review: Hot on the Cuban heels of "Nacao" comes another scorching hot Latin fusion from London-based virtuoso Claudio Passavanti. Loaded with an all-star cast comprising master percussionist Giovanni Imparato, Ronnie Scotts resident Rene Alvarez, the dancefloor-minded beat is peppered with Cuban percussion and vocal rhythms and lavish jazzy swings to the keys. Remix-wise Kay Suzuki provides two-for-one; an outstanding Balearic toe-tickler massaged with just the right amount of cosmicity and the naked drum track which is an odyssey in itself. Oye oye.

Spirale EP (12")
Cat: THEBRICKS 004. Rel: 12 Sep 18
  1. Spirale (6:04)
  2. Pray (5:19)
  3. Superfly (Paxton Fettel remix) (5:37)
  4. U Doing (DJ Normal 4's Mellifluous mixX) (5:22)
Review: Some 12 months after delivering a killer debut EP, Sunrom returns with an EP that we reckon is arguably even better. Check, for example, the glassy-eyed dancefloor bliss of impeccable opener "Spirale", where gorgeous, sun-bright synthesizer melodies dance seductively over a tropical-influenced groove and atmospheric electronics. It's accompanied on the A-side by "Pray", an ultra-deep and wonderfully bluesy affair that's propelled forwards at a leisurely pace by a slipped two-step rhythm. Side B, meanwhile, is all about other producers remixing unheard Sunrom originals. Paxton Fettel first lays down a jaunty, piano-heavy sunshine house version of "Superfly", before DJ Normal 4 steals the show with a driving, low-slung take on U Doing full of heavy bass, percussive vigour and early '90s ambient house synths.

  1. Guru (Matt Karmil remix) (5:23)
  2. Elephant (Pional Re-interpretation mix) (7:25)
  3. Guru (Marc Pinol remix) (7:51)
  4. Utopia (Dandara remix) (5:35)
Review: Four months on from the release of Guru, Sunrom's debut solo outing, a quartet of talented producers steps up to give it the remix treatment. Happily, the quality threshold remains incredibly high throughout, making singling out standout tracks a tricky task. We're particularly enjoying the crackling drums, sweeping ambient chords and gently starry electronics of Matt Karmil's deliciously deep interpretation of "Guru", though Pional's humid, tropical and mildly foreboding revision of "Elephant" is equally as impressive. Elsewhere, Marc Pinol teases out the melancholy on a drowsy but rhythmically lively rework of "Guru", while Dandara's version of "Utpoia" sounds like an acid-flecked riff on the Unknown Cases' "Masimbele" (which, to be fair, is no bad thing).

Banned From Jolene EP (limited 12")

  1. Five By Five (6:25)
  2. Organ Rollin' (6:19)
  3. Ecila (5:33)
  4. Analog Satellite (7:11)
Review: With a name like that, you'd expect it to do what it says on the cover; it does! Mads Bjerregaard & Philip Jun Kamata are Supertonic and they deliver some killer deep house with razor sharp analogue synth sounds on "Banned From Jolene". "Five By Five" is peak time business with its infectious melody and catchy groove. "Organ Rollin" gets deeper but still retains the screeching synths and thumping 808 rhythm. On the flip is "Ecila" and "Analog Satellite" a sexy, slow mo nu disco number that ticks all the right boxes. Mastered by Dietrich Schonnemann.

Brothers (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: VYG 02. Rel: 22 Nov 14
  1. Oscillate
  2. Old Wars
  3. Bamboo
  4. Close Quarters
Review: Those who heard Harvey Sutherland's excellent debut EP for Echovolt, Edges EP, will be familiar with his trademark sound - a toasty, analogue style take on deep house marked out by jazz-funk chord progressions, warming synthesizer melodies and shuffling grooves. He changes the script a little on this EP for Voyage Recordings, though there's still plenty of seductive deep house to enjoy (most notably opener "Oscillate" and the Inskwel style, boogie-influenced loveliness of "Bamboo"). Where the EP really comes into its own, though, is when he tries a different tack. "Old Wars" sounds like Moon B's electrofunk explorations wrapped in a snuggly duvet, while "Close Quarters" successfully fixes Herbie Hancock style synth melodies to loose, cymbal heavy beats.

Bermuda EP (12" repress)
Cat: MCDE 1213. Rel: 28 Sep 18
  1. Bermuda (6:31)
  2. New Paradise (6:48)
Review: Last year, Melbourne's Harvey Sutherland signaled his arrival in emphatic fashion with the acclaimed Brothers EP for Voyage Recordings - a sumptuous, soul-flecked EP of boogie-influenced deep house. Here, he continues to impress with a superb double A-side for Dani Plessow's MCDE imprint. "Bermuda" is deliciously warm and summery, with jaunty boogie synths and cascading chords riding a smooth, shuffling deep house groove. "New Paradise" works the same formula hard, with dreamy, held-note chords and bubbly synthesizer melodies wrapping themselves around loose, analogue-sounding percussion and a rich bassline. If there were any doubts about his talents moving forward, this should dispel them. Clearly, Sutherland is here to stay.

  4. Glow (5:45)
Review: Having previously had the honour of kicking off Honey Butter's debut EP - a compilation style affair unleashed last November - Swales has finally been given an EP of his own on which to showcase his wares. The Manchester producer begins with the high grade orchestral disco-house bounce of "Night Cuisine", where razor-sharp strings and eyes-closed jazz guitar motifs recline over a chunky peak-time rhythm, before reaching for the loved-up chords and saucer-eyed disco strings on the decidedly feel-good flex of "Heat". Side B opens with the lilting, hug-a-stranger emotion of bespoke disco-house treat "Supernatural", while EP closer "Glow" is a loved-up turn on for those who like their peak-time disco grooves to be underpinned by seriously heavy kick-drums and off-the-shelf percussion hits.

  1. Jeff Swiff - "I Lost Control"
  2. Christian James - "Back In Stride"
  3. Dan Ryan - "Pillar"
  4. Ricky Tinez - "DFW Deep"
Review: We've been waiting to see what would come next on Minneapolis Exchange after the excellent opening move from the mighty DJ Duke, and this time around there's a whole raft of talent on board. Jeff Swiff is on impeccable form with the soulful, bumping delights of "I Lost Control", while Christian James has an equally funkified approach that should have all true party people wiggling their middle in approval. Dan Ryan takes a punchier approach on the drums for "Pillar", but there's still lashings of vibin' keys bringing the warmth to the track. Ricky Tinez finishes the record off with a more introspective refrain that drifts in between the peppy thrust of the drums.

  3. Be There (Ghost Immanuel dub) (6:41)
Review: House Music With Love turn once again to Swedish duo Swim for a record soaked in a particularly soothing bath of Balearic goodness. Original track "Be There" is certainly laced with an air of Scandinavian cool, not least thanks to Erika Rosen's dreamy vocals, but there's a solid boogie undercarriage carrying the music along. Halllo Halo step up with a remix that makes a playful, intricate broken beat refrain out of the backing track while maintaining the vocals. Ghost Immanuel meanwhile whips up a spacious dub that stays close to the original, albeit in instrumental form.

  4. Woo! Yeah! (5:06)
Review: There are few artists laying down some true house vibes these days. Those that do are prone to following passing trends, while everybody else mashes other genres into the mix. John Swing is one such producer who has always kept it real, since day one of his excellent Relative label. Together with like-minded house and techno purist, EMG, the dup have built a sublime label from the ground up, and we await each one of their new releases with excitement and intrigue. Swing appears solo this time, along with four magnificent house warmers that showcase his trademark sound, and that sound as if they couldn't possibly have been made by anyone else. Take your pick from these four tunes, as each one is better than the last; but, most importantly, don't come complaining to us when you can't find decent house music out there, because this is it. Highly recommended.

  4. UKLJUCEN TI JE BLUTUT
Review: DJ Haus' ever-expanding deviant house music empire continues to impress with another installment of House Crime, this time committed by Szch. The 12" kicks off with the fast and freaky "Girl I Neva" which borders on juke levels of nagging sample chops, before the script gets crumpled up and tossed at the bin with the wonderfully scruffy rave deconstruction of "Peugeot 106 At Sunrise (Pingers Mix)". "Unconditional (Edit)" brings something a little smoother to the mix, although that underlying weirdness that comes with House Crime releases is still lurking in the wings. "UKLJUCEN TI JE BLUTUT" finishes the EP off in a rowdy yet reflective style - long may the strange tale of House Crime continue.

  1. The People (9:43)
  2. Set My People Free (5:01)
  3. Horny Dubz (7:19)
Review: Sometime FXHE regular Norm Talley rarely gets it wrong. Although his releases are relatively rare, the quality of the Detroiter's beatdown and Motor City deep house cuts is always exceptionally high. That's certainly the case on this three-track EP, which marks the veteran producer's first outing on The Playground. For us, it's all about ultra-deep A-side "The People", a hybrid beatdown/deep house affair where becalmed electric piano chords and held-note strings recline over a hypnotic, techno-tinged beat. That said, many will naturally gravitate towards the more bustling, drum machine-driven deep house grooves of "Set My People Free", while "Horny Dubz" is a suitably sweaty, jazzy and ear-pleasing bumper that should suit a variety of dancefloors.

Review: Motor-City legend Norm Talley has had one hell of a comeback since his hiatus at the end of the 90s. Since 2009, he's reignited his peerless talent behind the production desk and London-based Landed Records have come through with what is probably his biggest EP yet. "Ion" kicks things off with style and panache, merging beautiful chords together with Talley's inimitable percussion style - dicing hi-hats all round! The title track, "Travlin" is a sublime jazzed-out piece for the small hours whilst "Analog Dreams" is just pure hardware delight - those gritty drums delivering some serious action alongside the meandering pads and subdued vocals. Get to know!

Review: Following his impeccable album Norm-A-Lize last year, Detroit's City Boy Player returns to Alex O Smith's FXHE imprint with five more soul-stirring sessions. "Foundation" lives up to its name with a classic spoken sample and 11pm mood-changing struts, "Detroit 2 Step" has a touch of the Bonobos with its woozy oboes over lightly swung, organic drums. "Fan Ta Cee" flips the mode for something a lot deeper and darker (think Theo's classic remix of "Falling Up" and you're not far off) while "Consciousness" is a cool creative percussive tool with a swooping rise that sweeps and dips in all the right places. Finally we're sent packing with the bold chord-striking piece "Friday Night". If this doesn't have you marching, nothing will.

Review: Holic Trax label boss Tomoki Tamura continues his anniversary celebrations by presenting his own work on this third installment of 5ive Years. The title track is a deep and crafty tech house cut suited to more subtle, heads down moments, while "Polyphony Six" keeps things equally moody but fattens out the bass and warms up the lead lines. "U's Floppy Disk" is a more taut, wiry track with gruff drums and splashes of bleepy FX - the perfect tripped out club tool. "High Chee's" lightens the mood at the 11th hour with a more playful melodic line that should fine favour with all kinds of good time DJs.

  1. Three Thousand Stars
  2. Three Thousand Dub
  3. Keypella 4 U
  4. Room 202
  5. Ny Bassworks (vinyl only)
Review: To mark the 20th release on essential house label Holic Trax, boss man Tomoki Tamura steps up wth his first solo outing on the imprint. Coming on vinyl and digital, one of the cuts is a sample for you to use on your own tracks that you can then fire back to the label.

Founded in 2012, this go-to label is run by London based Japanese DJ and producer Tomoki, who has A&Red some rock solid, no nonsense house music from artists like Mr G, Rick Wade, Tuccillo, Keita Sano and many other key talents. Now he impresses with four of his own firing cuts which will hopefully be the first of many.

The title track gets things underway with big flabby bass underpinning trippy synth details and loopy drums. It is a straight up house jam that is deep and driving, sprinkled with twinkling melody and will make a big impact in any set. An even more stripped back and direct dub version is included for those who like it deep and playful. The absorbing 'Keypella 4 U' is a spooky thirty-second synth sample that is fluid and cosmic, and can be used in your own music in anyway you like.
The creepy 'Room 202' is an atmospheric number with sci-fi sounds and deep space synths all unfolding over a machine drum line and forceful kicks. It is back room dancing dynamite that will make anyone sweat. Last but not least, standout vinyl only treat 'NY Bassworks' is a skipping, percussive house number with wonky sine waves and crisp hits all jacking you into a groove.

This is another faultless releases on Holic Trax that will win the boss and his label many new fans as a result.

Review: Nail's 89:Ghost label continues to march ahead with further musings on the mysterious creative realm between deep house and techno, which is a natural home for Tomoki Tamura. The Holic Trax boss man steps up with the solid four track Quiet Air Gun EP, and from the get go the quality is unmistakable. "Quiet Air Gun" is an alluring yet undeniably strange jam, with vocals from Moo only adding to the eerie, sensual tension. "Foggy Jungle" is more upfront with its tough beats n' bass exoskeleton, but between that scuffed combo there's ample room for subtle atmospheric touches as well. "DSC House" then brings the real peak time heat with its smoking samples and heavyweight rhythm section, but there's time for one more trip out with the sublime "Stars In The Morning".

The Brooklyn based producer is back on the label with another four tracks of finest deep house for the club, kicking off with the emotive but peppy strains of "Jacob's Ladder" before drifting off into the calmer waters of "Maspeth Ave". "Life As An Echo" has an equally wistful ring to it, but don't be misled, this is still sturdy tackle for the dancefloor. "The Forests Of My Mind" finishes the EP off with a hazy trip through languorous pads and dusty drums for those tender moments of the night.

Review: Love Notes reach their tenth release with a double pack from label regular tape_hiss. Following on from two crucial 12"s that landed on the label last year, the Brooklyn artist steps up with eight cuts of purest heat that remind you just how much mileage there still is in no-nonsense hardware jams. There's a consistent mood of immersive, undulating house coursing throughout, with warm, punchy acid basslines offset by intricate percussion and dreamy pads that sit easy on the ears. "Folding Space" is a standout track with its delicate beats and refined lead lines, while "No Neck & Bad As Hell" brings a little electro bite into the mix, with stunning results.

  2. The Vivian Girls (7:05)
  3. The Vivian Girls (Patrice Scott remix) (6:49)
  4. Realms Of The Unreal (5:51)
Review: Brooklyn's Love Notes label continues to strengthen its repertoire with a return offering from the rising San Francisco producer tape_hiss. Following on from the excellent Love Is A Dog From Hell 12" earlier in the year this new four track single presents yet more plush, heartfelt jams from the machine-based side of house music. If a reference point were needed, having Patrice Scott on board for a remix is a logical move, although the Detroit don's Latin-flavoured shakedown of "The Vivian Girls" is a spicy proposition compared to the soothing balm of the original. That's not to say tape_hiss doesn't like to throw it down, as the twitchy pulse of "Realms Of The Unreal" adeptly proves.

  2. Gunkan (6:39)
  3. Bitchplease (6:40)
  4. Preemo (5:05)
Review: Finest Hour co-boss returns to the party with four more fat stacks of dope, warm house grooves. Kicking off with a big bump and gradually easing down the vibe scale, "Horizons" opens up with a slinky robo-soul arrangement that's scantily clad in jazzy piano lace while "Gunkan" maintains the android jack with a little more restraint on the pads. Flip for two deeper jams as "Bitchplease" kicks with a cool broken beat shuffle and smoky textured dubby pads while "Preemo" winds us right down with slouching trip hop steez. No stones left unturned.

Alelle Fu (12")
Cat: FINA 016. Rel: 07 Jul 14
  1. Alelle Fu
  2. Olsen Mosaik
  3. Savant
  4. Straff Afo
Review: FINA Records returns with its sixteenth release this June, this time coming from German duo Tarron Trekka who offer up a four-track self-titled EP. Both Daniel Muller-Sachs and Andreas Kriester have been releasing material via the likes of Freude Am Tamzen, Brut! and Milnor Modern as Tarron Trekka since the late 2000's, and here find themselves snapped up for a single on the illustrious FINA imprint. "Alelle Fu" is some of the most joyfully strange house music we've heard in a while, it's copious filtering making the whole thing sound like a tightly coiled spring. The remaining three tracks are much more traditional, but offer the kind of late night deepness that will keep any basement dancefloor grooving into the small hours.

Yen Ara: Remixes Part 1 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: MRB 12050. Rel: 20 Jun 18
  1. Krumandey (Ron Trent remix) (6:57)
  2. Mumudey Mumudey (Natureboy Flako remix) (4:38)
  3. Mumudey Mumudey (Nick The Record remix) (7:44)
Review: When a 12" turns up with a Ron Trent rework on the A-side, we tend to take notice. In this instance, we were particularly curious to hear what the deep house legend had done to "Krumandey", one of the standout cuts from Highlife legend Ebo Taylor's recent album, Yen Ara. Predictably, his version is superb, brilliantly joining the dots between Taylor's soaring Afro-beat, rolling Afro-house and Trent's own sumptuous deep house electronics. Turn to the flipside for two fresh revisions of "Mumduey Mumduey": a jaunty, sunshine-friendly tweak by Japanese producer Natureboy Flako and a heavy Afro-disco version by Nick The Record rich in bowel-bothering sub-bass and spacey deep house chords.
