Bizzness (12")
Cat: LT 086. Rel: 10 Jul 18
  1. Bizzness (5:37)
  2. Cart People (4:46)
  3. Slow Glow (3:15)
  4. Sweet Dreams (4:22)
Review: Philpot co-founder Soulphiction has been MIA for a while now, making it an utter pleasure to have him back on our charts with some effective new house swingers. He's landed on Local Talk, one of the very best in its class, and "Bizzness" kicks off with a funky-ass bassline and some freaky vocal chops, while "Cart People" lingers at a steadier sort of tempo, filtered through mounds of dubbed-out haze. "Slow Glow" is an experiment in percussion, also meandering its wavy synths on an off-kilter mode, and "Sweet Dreams" works the drum-machine in and out of the groove, ending up with another off-balance house experiment for the deeper minds out there on the floor!

Parking Lot Blues EP (140 gram vinyl 12" repress)
Cat: LIH 022. Rel: 02 Jul 18
  1. Stick Up
  2. B3B4URD1
  3. Acid Test
  4. Dirty Hot
Review: Philpot Records maestro Soulphiction may not have appeared on Lumberjacks In Hell before, but he's cited as a big influence on the label, and here the Stuttgart-based artist gets four chances to unfurl his deft instinct for dusty, soul and funk-infused house music. "Stick Up" gets the MPC grooves and twisting bass licks rolling beautifully, while "B3B4URD1" injects a little Afro-flavoured funk into the mix with another addictive low end flex. "Acid Test" pours a little more jack into the pot without losing that crooked Soulphiction flavour, and then "Dirty Hot" does a mean job of teaching all newcomers how to really do an edit.

  2. Soundstudio - "Track 440" (5:09)
  3. Soundhack - "What You Feel" (4:59)
  4. Soundstore - "Relief" (5:52)
Review: YES. This is exactly what we need after the end of a long summer, and what has been a period of relatively lower releasing activity in the house and techno sphere. A new Soundstream bruiser to add to what is surely one of the most impressive catalogues around. The last one that was released a year or so ago was excellent, but this four-tracker is even better, bolder, and nastier. Moreover, you get four cuts from four different Soundstream aliases, so you know you're in for the score. "Aqua Dance" is an addictive disco slinger with that magic Soundstream sampling touch, but from "Track 440" onwards, things start to turn a little more off-kilter, and that tune itself is a fuzzy, distorted disco-house hybrid that perfectly encapsulates the Soundstudio alias. The same can be said for the Soundhack-approved "What You Feel", a wavy disco mutant that is of the same ilk as Pepe Bradock's material, while Soundstore's "Relief" is a more classic house spliff packed with banging drums and guided by a deep, sweltering bass. Essential.

Pipe Bomb (12")
Cat: SS 043. Rel: 28 Mar 14
  1. Pipe Bomb (1)
  2. Pipe Bomb (2)
Review: Sound Signature are at it again with their dark, driving and jackin' grooves. Every time Theo Parrish decides a tune is worth pressing up nice and loud on vinyl, it's wise to pay attention. And so it proves here, with Chicago native Spekter dropping one-sided 12" "Pipe Bomb", a deadly and pounding excursion into the murkier corners of house music. It's not one for the faint hearted either, as an overwhelming sense of moodiness pushes ever forward, dripping in twisted samples and heavy techno kicks.

Review: Saginaw brothers Ben and Zachary (aka Shigeto) only launched the Portage Garage Sounds imprint this year, and already they've come through with some absolute beasts! For this latest outing, Zachary Saginaw and Bill Spender come through as Spencer & Saginaw, putting Michigan firmly back on the electronic map with the headstrong "Real Talk", a tune which perhaps doesn't bang as hard as others, but that certainly has all the grove and charisma of the some of the finest Omar S tunes. There's also an instrumental cut, and the hollow landscapes of the AmbACID version of "B_W".

Review: Following DJ Boring's memorable trip down "Sunday Avenue" Let's Play House invite another exciting foundation-inspired talent to the fold; David Disanto. Building on a sweet run of grooves this year on the likes of Frole, Manitou and Quality Vibe come four delicate synth-chiselled trips that range from the smoky struts and jacks of the Robsoul-style "Fools Jam" to the almost Nordic introspective Balearica of "La Luna". Taking time to remix himself under his other alias Emphasi along the way, this is the sound of St David really settling into his warm, timeless signature right here.

Review: David "Spargel-Tazan" Joseph makes his first appearance on Finest Hour, showcasing a quartet of loose, jazzy, distorted and spaced-out deep house cuts. He begins with the Recloose-sampling, Theo Parrish style swing of "Track 1", where starlight keys and rich chords mingle with shuffling rhythms and occasional bongo patterns. "Track 2" is a trackier concoction with broken tape melodies and densely layered percussion, while "Track 3" is as attractively breezy as a seaside stroll on a sunny day. Finally, he does is best Pepe Bradock impression on the glitchy and humid "Track 4", which is undeniably the deepest of the four cuts.

  3. Mezigue - "Il Faudra Remercier Pierre" (6:04)
  4. Lo Life - "Ill At Delphia" (Raw mix) (3:30)
Review: The first two releases on Folamour's FHUO label boasted headline-grabbing tracks from the hyped French producer. On release number three he's decided to showcase the work of other like-minded producers instead. Newcomer St Paul kicks things off with the sparkling, boogie-era disco-house cheeriness of "Tonight With You Baby", before Madcat serves up an ear-pleasing chunk of disco-funk/jazz-funk/deep house fusion (the pleasingly percussive "Quarter Century"). Over on side two, Mezigue brilliantly fixes attractive, spaced-out synth lines to a high-tempo rhythm track (think ghetto-house meets Detroit techno, and you're close) before Lo Life gets in full-on orchestral trip-hop mode on the brilliantly produced "Ill at Delphia (Raw Mix)".

  1. Ka One & St-Sene - "Aseed 2"
  2. Ortella - "Dope Noise"
  3. Steaward - "Track 1"
  4. Steaward - "Track 2"
Review: Here, one-time Local Talk and Qualmoto Records regular DJ Steaw dons his Steaward alias for a second selection of acid-flecked deep house and Detroit techno jams. This time, he's joined by a couple of other producers, who contribute impressive cuts to the A-side. There's a fluid feel to the twittering synths and late night atmospherics of Ortella's "Dope Noise", which belies the track's pumping techno rhythms. Ka-One 7 St-Sene's "Aceed Two" is similarly enjoyable, with rough 303 lines riding pounding drums and hazy chords. Steaw takes a more straightforward deep house route on his two contributions, with the sweaty and decidedly fuzzy "Track 2" outgunning the more cultured "Track 1" in the "best track" stakes.

Review: Now striking volume eight in his highly collectable floor-firing self-titled white label style series, Paris' Steaw gets his classical jack on with three more thumping machine-made numbers. "Holding Back" is raw, visceral and pounding, "Last Flight" is an energetic uplift track with nuances of Detroit lurking deep in the mix while "10 PM" closes on a 2020 style tip, all lucid, warm and molten but subtly pumping. Another perfect addition to the series.

  1. Along The Coast (7:36)
  2. Moondowner (6:25)
  3. Be Myself (7:33)
Review: Smallville Records/Smallpeople co-founder Julius Steinhoff returns after a great collaboration with Moomin on the Closer imprint last year, a surprising non-electronic album with his band project Tonight Will Be Fine (together with Abdeslam Hammouda) on Japanese label Mule Musiq and some great remixes for Spain's Saft label. The Hamburg native strikes out with some real proper deep stuff here, like on the soulful and emotive acid express of "Along The Coast", or the energetic hi-tech soul workout that is "Moondowner" and finally draws on the bloodlines of classic techno and electro (in a modern context) on the trippy and minimalist "Be Myself". A solid effort from one of Germany's most underrated producers.

  1. Rain
  2. Ahead
  3. Process Of Decay
Review: Japanese producer Ken "Stereociti" Sumitani has been a regular contributor to Don Williams' Mojuba label since 2009. Rain, though, is his first single for the imprint since 2012, and his first outing of any sort for a year. Predictably he's in fine form, attempting to go deeper than many would think humanly possible. The title track - blessed with samples of raindrops falling on a window - is particularly delicious, with Sumitani layering soft electronics and alien melodies over a locked-in, Detroit-influenced deep house groove. The more percussive and undeniably bass-heavy "Ahead", which comes with just a whisper of ragged acid - is, if anything, even deeper. Neither, though, can hold a candle to "Process of Decay", a deep tech-house shuffler that sounds like it was recorded several kilometres below the floor of the world's deepest ocean.

House Crime were quick to pick up on the distinctive qualities in his lo-fi, pumped up sound and following on from an appearance on House Crime Vol. 1. BC is back with a whopping great double pack of killer jams from the wild side of the outboard brigade. "Drive Over" has a nagging lead line that will turn heads despite its stark simplicity, while "Between The Sheets" plays with boogie tropes and makes them sound delightfully off kilter. Start to finish it's a collection of wondefully grubby but utterly fresh jams.

Review: Stephan Laubner is a productive sort. It's not long since he delivered the impressive At Disconnected Moments full-length for Smallville - or, for that matter, a pair of impressive 12" singles for Lick My Deck and Echochord - but he continues to churn out the hits. This expansive EP for his own Something imprint touches on many of his usual themes, casually flitting between spooky ambience ("LSS Recording"), hazy dub techno ("Intergalactic Quannum Web"), and curiously imaginative, off-kilter deep house (the woozy chug, humid melodies and dub techno textures of stand-out "Monkey Island"). He's also included an impressive trio of loops for DJs to play with, which veer from manic ghetto-glitch ("Loop 1"), to Casio-ware techno ("Loop 3"), via blazed hip-hop ("Loop 2").

  3. Lawrence - "Dawn 808" (8:40)

Review: This year, Smallville Records is celebrating a decade in the game with the Smallville Ways compilation. This second, sampler 12" boasts a quartet of cuts from that set. The prolific Stephan "STL" Laubner kicks things off, going deep into dub techno/deep house fusion territory with the ricocheting chords, delay-laden hits and suitably bass-heavy groove of "Leaving Peaceful". Tilman Tausenfruend's "A Man Under The Influence" is a woozy, fluid delight - think clicking percussion, watery chords and smooth bass - while Lawrence's "Dawn 808" perfectly captures the sapped energy and hazy sunlight of an early morning session of outdoor dancing. Best of all, though, is Christopher Rau's "RG En El Casa", where skittish, soft touch beats provide the perfect foil for the producer's melancholic chords and yearning melodies.

Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

It is much more of the dusty and dreamy variety: meme house in the vein of Lobster Theremin and we are really digging it!
