Shards (10")
Cat: PTH 001. Rel: 29 Jun 15
  1. Shards (6:19)
  2. Silhoueted (6:00)
Review: PSYTH launches with the debut EP from Rob Shields. With a delicate urgency driven by a pulsating post-punk bassline, Shards
lavishes layer upon rich layer of sound, evoking the cool grooves of Peaking Lights and Chromatics, while a shimmering vocal
sample from Rebecca Sawyer adds an otherworldly sense of longing that echoes through the soul of the release. Silhouetted appears
more conventional and dance-floor friendly next to Shards, but under the surface is something unique and strangely exotic. A
mantra-like melody loop gives a nod to minimalist composer Terry Riley and his solo organ works, while world instruments such as
an African kalimba and Tibetan singing bowl only heighten the hypnotic and intoxicating quality even further.

Review: Cologne vinyl only operation Rough House Rosie return with a fourth release and a full label debut from Russian producer Shine Grooves (also known to make techno as Quadrat) whose track "Pure Reason" featured on the Silent Movie Sounds I split release issued by RHR earlier this year. The Cairo EP sees the Yekaterinburg-based producer drop five cuts that slip between various moods of house and techno.

Kohisikarubeki (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: JUSG 006. Rel: 02 Oct 17
  1. Kohisikarubeki
  2. Kohisikarubeki (Rhythm & Soul remix)
  3. Waganamidakana
  4. Outro
Review: Shintaro.D is new on the scene, but this promising Japanese producer follows up on his debut on his own label INIT with this assured 12" for Jus Groove It, taking the stripped down deep house template and injecting it with an off-kilter approach to sound design that subtly makes for one of the most effective DJ tools heard in recent memory. That track in question is "Kohisikarubeki", and its remix by Rhythm & Soul takes those intricately carved shards of sound design and smooths them into a more conventional house music shape. The B-side finds Shintaro.D turning out more of that subversive, future-minded deep house business, with "Waganamidakana" being a clear highlight.

  1. Function Spring (8:31)
  2. Gravitation Of Acidtree (8:08)
Review: Given that Inoue Shirabe's last outing for Antinote was something of a luscious gem, you'd expect this follow-up to be similarly impressive. Happily, it is, with the Japanese producer once again showcasing his soft-centred blend of evocative melodious, dreamy electronics and shuffling rhythms. With its' whistling synthesizer melodies, Motor City flashes and sweaty, pitched-down drums, A-side "Function Spring" sounds like a sunrise anthem in the making. He flips the script slightly on the flip, offering an enticing mixture of Soichi Terada style drums, tumbling electronics, humid marimba lines and vintage ambient house pads. Intriguingly, "Gravitation of Acidtree" is also his most intergalactic track to date, suggesting a previously appreciation of classic Detroit techno.

Review: Love Notes turns its affections towards the Windy City with this exemplary 12" from Chicago producer Shmoo, who is no slouch in the energy department when rolling out the pumped up deep house delights of "Sidehacker". "Intellect's Intuitive Waste" is no slouch either, taking a brighter sunshine approach compared to "Sidehacker"s nocturnal veneer, and "Limited Trance" keeps the jack up while letting the additional tones and textures take things deeper. Garrett David gets busy with "Intellect's Intuitive Waste", creating a crafty remix steeped in intriguing percussion without losing that housey focus that defines the Love Notes approach.

  4. Motion Beats (John Jastszebski edit)
Review: The Politics Of Dancing crew are back with a third round of edits from their close compatriots in the Paris scene and beyond, taking some old-skool house classics and giving them a modern sheen. Shonky is up first, whipping up a spicy salsa of sleek and shimmering 80s tinted house music that screams dancefloor dynamite. Franck Roger then tackles DJ Duke's classic garage house burner "Blow Your Whistle" and teases out the deepest qualities of the evergreen party starter. 2VILAS 909 gets busy with "Brenda," locking into a heads down groove for the late hours, and then John Jastszebski reshapes "Motion Beats" into a gently trippy roller for the wigged out crowd.

  5. Recordtake (Sketch)
Review: Previously caught unwinding psychotropic deep techno on Ethereal Sound, Modernista and more, Yuri Shulgin now comes to Cocktail D'Amore with the kind of discoid acid sound the label loves so dearly. "Animal Planet" is a fine case in point, laying the psychedelic touches on thick and taking a bold approach to composition without losing his grip on the punchy acid bassline. "Boogie Space" is a boxy workout, while "Walking" brings some limber instrumentation into the mix in line with the title track. "Dubby Body" is another off-kilter tool for adventurous DJs, and then "Recordtake (Sktech)" finishes the EP on a weird and wonderful free jazz boogie tip.

Review: Dazzle Records was a short-lived sublabel of Outland that carried just two singles. One of them was Keith Sibley's Stand By Me, which captured the zeitgeist of mid 90s garage house perfectly. Now US label Plastik People has commissioned a raft of remixes to bring the soulful hooks of the original to a fresh audience. British producer Crackazat gets into a looped up, heads down groove while Plastik People boss Cotterell lays down some thick organ work on his 'Classic Vibe' mix. Johan S has a particularly bright and breezy approach with his own Chandler-inspired version, while Sibley's original makes an appearance in all its life-affirming glory.

  1. From The Bottom

  3. Latenight Tale
Review: For the latest missive on his fast-rising Traxx Underground imprint, Samann has recruited Tieffrequent regular Siggatunez. In keeping with the imprint's classic New Jersey and San Francisco deep house influences, Street Sessions Part 1 is a warm, hazy and hugely enjoyable affair, with the Berlin-based producer conjuring up a trio of timeless tracks packed to the rafters with breezy positivity. He begins with the bumpin' NJ beats, toasty electronic pianos and eyes-closed electronics of "From The Bottom", before emphasizing the soul on the rolling, Chez Damier style goodness of "If". The EP's final track, "Latenight Tale", boasts all manner of sun-kissed instrumentation and some wonderfully organic beats, making it sound like a tribute to the halcyon days of San Fran's legendary Naked Music label.

  4. The Other Side (Mall Grab remix) (5:16)
Review: Following a string of well-regarded EPs - mostly on Emotive - Silk 86 joins the growing Shall Not Fade family. The Other Side is a wholeheartedly positive and melodious affair, with all four cuts sounding like they could ignite any house-centric party if dropped at the right time. While the title track, a bouncy roller full of jammed-out electronic piano solos, lazy Rhodes chords and elastic synth bass, is undeniably ace, our pick is probably the low-slung, bass-heavy deep house/disco-house fusion of "Rhapsody" (though opener "The Shine", a breezy piano-heavy affair full of authentic disco percussion, is also fantastic). If that wasn't enough to set the pulse racing, Mall Grab's remix of "The Other Side" is a sweaty, bass-heavy, late night delight.

Cat: SVD 006. Rel: 05 Mar 18
  1. Nanoschnitzel
  2. Eye In The Sky
  3. Munticles
Review: Silverlining continues to explore the depth and breadth of his sound with the sixth instalment in the Silverlining Dubs series, and this record in particular leads in with the crafty, metal-plated electro of "Nanoschnitzel". It's a beautifully crafted jam that aligns with the current swell of electro exploration taking place in all corners of the scene, and it contrasts sharply with the bumping house structure of "Eye In The Sky". "Munticles" finishes the EP off with a consummate demonstration of tough-edged tech house fundamentals, all nagging groove and curious textures making for the perfect floor fuel.

  2. Dog With The Groove Of Lights - "G-Spot" (Silverlining dub)
  3. The Mingers - "Emancipation" (Silverlining remix)
Review: The London underground house and techno stalwart continues to explore his cult Silverlining project with gusto, this time around taking the immersive, dubby sound into new pastures with fresh remixes of lesser known tracks. First up is The Inhabitants, whose catchy vocal cut "The Truth & The Lie" gets a lean rub down with ample space in the mix, before "G-Spot" by Dog With The Groove Of Lights gets buffed up into a driving yet supremely deep workout for peak time play. The Mingers' " emancipation" is quite possibly the stand out on the record, creating the perfect stripped-down groove and then dropping the slinkiest baseline into the mix with the classy touch we've come to expect from him.

  1. Remind Me Of Dancing (feat Jyroscope)
  2. ITB Jam
  3. Love Letter
  4. Last Time
Review: The Marcel Vogel-fronted label Intimate Friends has already done sterling work releasing deep house from the likes of Roman Rauch and Reginald Omas Mamode IV, and now it's Simba's turn to step up and strut his stuff. The Goodbye Miss Misanthropy EP is loaded with curveball house music of the highest order, with "Remind Me Of Dancing" particularly standing out thanks to Jyroscope's inspiring vocal turn. There's some off-kilter jazz moods tumbling out of "ITB Jam", while a fractured soul vibe gives "Love Letter" its power. "Last Time" is a honey-coated closer that rides on the laziest of grooves with some added sample power from a titan of RnB.

  4. Space Is The Place
Review: Given that Simoncino has never hidden his admiration for early deep house producers - much of his material sounds like it was inspired by Larry Heard, the Burrell brothers and Lamont Booker - it's unsurprising to find that his latest EP pays tribute to legendary NYC deep house producer Bobby Konders. Stylistically, this isn't much of a shift; as usual, Dreams of Konders comes swaddled in dreamy pads, vintage synthesizers and the unmistakable pulse of original analogue drum machines. Simoncino explores a range of moods - from the deep space swirl of "Meggaton" and chugging pulse of "Pyramids", to the snuggly warmth of the title track - with the faintly foreboding "Space Is The Place" standing out.

  3. Simsim (7:32)
Review: Disco duo Simple Symmetry is made up of brothers Sasha and Sergey Lipski, and the pair have obviously maintained their brotherly bond into the studio and out onto the dancefloor. It has been two years since their first EP on Glenview Records, and they've been minimal in their output, but more than dedicated to releasing quality Saturday night music. They land the Low Budget Family imprint with "Mimino", a disco-house tune with a sort of Irish dance thing going on, a sound that's instantly hummable and kind of addictive! There's a more laid back instrumental mix featuring a heavier dosage of synths, followed by the Arabian sounding "Simsim", another odd yet enticing disco cut with interesting wordly flavours.

Cat: 89GHOST 010. Rel: 05 Mar 18
  1. Pacificist

  3. Plink
  4. Settle
Review: Todd Sines has been on an incredibly productive roll of late, and now he's been invited to lay down some of his incendiary machine jams for Nail's 89:Ghost label. The Internal Dialogue EP kicks off with the creepy, metallic tones of "Pacifist", matching Sines' trademark jerking grooves with almost industrial textures. "Throat" takes things in an equally curious direction, pinging deep house dynamics into a weird zone where discord and sound processing subtly infect the blueprint with stunning results. "Plink" is remarkably upfront in comparison, not least thanks to the huge monosynth lead blurting out at the front of the mix. "Settle" finishes the record off with a brilliantly crooked deconstruction built around off-kilter drum hits and wonky key stabs that could only come from Sines' distinctive sound palette.

Review: On Paradise, Siren's Darshan Jesrani and Dennis Kane join forces with veteran vocalist Felice Rosser, who was a key member of New York's experimental "downtown" scene throughout the 1980s. Rosser's breathy, howling vocals sit perfectly amongst Jesrani and Kane's low-slung, delay-heavy production, which sits somewhere between the post-punk dub disco of Fist of Facts, the horn-heavy strut of Konk, and the sparse, proto-house sound of Paul Simpson, Winston Jones and Boyd Jarvis. For those after something altogether sleazier, Gavin Russom has provided a dark, throbbing, ten-minute basement workout that reverberates to the sound of industrial textures and muscular percussion.

  4. Lumena
Review: Of all the delightful curveballs FXHE pulled last year, coaxing 90s Swedish techno producer Patrik Sjeren out of hiding to contribute to a Omar S release was the least expected. Detroit obviously favours the producer as Aaron Siegel's FIT Sounds operation now presents a full eponymously titled EP of new Sjeren material. The Swede's dalliance with Omar S on that 998 12" last year feels like it's inspired him as the four tracks here sound as diverse as a FXHE release and are held together cohesively by Sjeren's veteran production touch. Lead track "Lowdown" throws around a fractured female vocal edit and playfully shining keys over a smooth yet bumping house groove whilst the driving "Trashed Funk" adopts a similar approach but feels a whole lot dirtier. Flip over and Patrik switches the emphasis to techno, heading down the analogue wormhole on "Code Black" and pulling us sideways with the hypnotic warblings of "Lumena".
