  1. Burdens Down (6:11)
  2. Thank You Lord (6:24)
  3. Burdens Down (Terence Parker main radio edit) (3:32)
Review: When they first emerged in the early 1990s, Lou Robinson's mysterious Scan 7 collective was compared favourably to fellow Detroit techno militants Underground Resistance (for the record, they are loosely affiliated). "Burdens Down", their first single for Belgian label Elypsia since 2001, sees them in fine form, delivering a title track that brilliantly joins the dots between Terrence Parker style gospel techno and bouncy, piano-driven house. Fittingly, Parker delivers a cheery, organ and piano heavy radio edit that pushes the track's gospel roots to the fore. The EP's other cut, "Thank You Lord", jogs even further towards New Jersey gospel house territory whilst retaining the futurist ethos and rhythmic structure of Detroit techno.

Review: First producing in 2009, C.Scott is an MPC virtuoso inspired by hip-hop's golden era. He jumped head first into Pittsburgh's music community after having perfected his craft, maintaining a strong presence in the local electronic scene. After his 2016 debut release on Lumberjacks in Hell, this is his return to vinyl with a seven track EP on Pittsburgh Track Authority's imprint, that covers a wide variety of moods and grooves. From the soulful hi-tech jazz of "Departure", the low slung/slo-mo boogie down vibe of "Distance Fog" and the dusty late night deepness of "Daily" which is filtered to perfection and includes a remix from LA DJ/Producer Aaron Paar, who is one half of the legendary Teflon Dons.

  1. Climb On (5:31)

  4. At Ease (feat Buscrates) (5:46)
Review: Marcel Vogel's Lumberjacks In Hell label shows no signs of slowing as it ramps up a killer new salvo from debutant artist C Scott. "Climb On" is an uptempo workout to capture the absolute peak of the party in the funkiest of ways, while "Hands Free" provides an apt alternative with its slow, organ-led whimsy. Disco remains the backbone of the sound here, whatever tempo the track rolls at and wherever it may head. "Stuttering" demonstrates this perfectly with its heavily treated, head-spinning FX still capturing that classic good-time mood, while "At Ease" finishes on a life-affirming canter of Rhodes led celebration.

Reborn Goodness (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SOTC PS01. Rel: 22 Jan 18
  1. Reborn Goodness
  2. They’re Up To Something
  3. She’s Jazzy
Review: The highly regarded Sounds Of The City label makes a welcome return after promising 12"s from Brian Harden, Walt J, Kai Alce and Javontte amongst others. This time around they've called upon Detroit house royalty Patrice Scott to lay down some delicate, refined deep house loaded with that all important Motor City soul. "Reborn Goodness" is quintessential Scott, riding a steady cruising groove and laying down honey coated keys, while "They're Up To Something" nudges in a more spacious kind of soulful house music that wouldn't sound out of place in Rick Wade's repertoire. "She's Jazzy" finishes the EP off with a snappy, stomping jam that stands out as one of the best on the 12".

  1. We Love You
  2. Keep On
  3. Cats & Water
  4. Sky In The Clouds
Review: With this new four-track EP by Rai Scott the slowly emerging producer moves away from being the enigma that appeared on a split 12" with Brad Peterson that launched the Inner Shift imprint in 2012. And by the sounds on this EP, she's someone to be noticed. Preceding her forthcoming debut on Ornate, Scott provides another four-track called Reason to Smile for Inner Shift Music. It's the fifth release for the label this year and "We Love You" certainly earns its place as the record's A1; sweet and meaningful deep house. "Keep On" is a dubbed out, bassline driven tribal journey of drums and low-end rhythm completed by emotional chords that eventually takeover, while "Cats and Water" is on a funky, stripped-back and loopy '90s techno tip. And for some ambient fun that then turns house: "Sky In The Clouds" is a perfect B2. An exciting producer house communities worldwide should be talking about in the second half of this year.

  1. Secret Garden

  3. Endorphins
  4. Insomnia
Review: Ukranian producer SE62 has been ducking in and out of the limelight since 2009, notching up impressive releases on labels like My Love Is Underground and Home Taping Is Killing Music. Now he returns to deliver the second release on Rhythm N Vibe, and does so in style. There's a tripped-out, heady atmosphere to "Secret Garden" that would sound incredible on a Sunday session at Panoramabar, while "Together" is a much rawer proposition. "Endorphins" is a curveball of a track, all uptempo stomp and off the wall samples, and "Insomnia" finishes the EP off with another switch up. The crafty breakstep flex of the drums and sparse atmosphere make for a cool and deadly variation to the rest of the EP.

Review: La Vie D'Artiste founder Sebb Junior returns to the controls with more senior sounds. Pure filtered disco soul, loopy and hypnotic; each cut digs deep into his country's rich house legacy. "U Got Dat Vibe" kicks off with silky effect and crucially applied vocal sample, elsewhere "Good Vibes" lives up to its name with an infectious vocal loop and swollen synth bulging underneath, "Don't Play That" plays the instant party heater with its classic hook sample and loose limbed jacking shuffle while "My Babe" takes another iconic vocal and twists it into the groove so tightly it feels like it was meant to be. The summers still not over while records like this are being released...

Review: Spain-based French DJ Sebb Junior maintains the heat from last year's Rewind album on Papa by launching his own label La Vie D'Artiste Music with four brand new original. "Sunshine" lives up to its name with warmth and a vibrancy that sparkles with the filtered groove and cheeky slap bass. "Heaven" is fittingly monikered, too with its divine vocals, angelic chords and pearly gate bass. Flip for a filtered disco-tinged strutter in the form of "Get Yo Body" and the soul stirring, stately jacking finale "If We Try". Ah, la joie de vivre!

Cat: WAN 03. Rel: 10 Oct 17
  1. Shakin (5:32)
  2. Nine Toms (6:31)
Review: It has been a long time between drinks for former Soul Jazz Records regular Secondo. Shakin appears almost five years to the day since his last outing on Whataboutnow, the low profile label he established in 2011. On the A-side, he reaches for the synths and glistening guitar solos on a loopy house jam that sounds like it was built out of loops taken from an obscure and overlooked mid-80s Balearic pop B-side. B-side "9 Toms" inhabits similar sonic territory, with the Swiss producer seemingly crafting more sunny, dewy-eyed, loop-house gold out of discarded bits of a 1980s blue-eyed soul song. If Tiger and Woods dug for soft focus sample fare rather than synth-laden electrofunk, it would probably sound like this.

Review: A warm welcome back to Los Angeles artist Eddie Ruscha, who here dons the familiar Secret Circuit alias for the first time in two years. Opener "Stomping Ground" sets the tone, delivering Rushca's usual balance between colourful psychedelia, acid-fired dancefloor haziness and swirling Balearic bliss. In contrast, "Crazy Ways" is a slow and druggy affair, with ghostly electronics rising above a throbbing, analogue disco groove. Flipside "Hedz" is a loose-limbed slab of electronic Tropicana full of delay-laden Afro-beat guitar flourishes and eyes-closed electronic marimba melodies, while "The Feather Drop" is a weirder, rougher and altogether odder mix of wild acid lines, sharp electronics and San Francisco style dub house rhythms.

Review: James Priestley and Giles Smith are stalwarts of the London scene (and the duo behind the legendary Secretsundaze parties) and make a rare release outside of their eponymous imprint - appearing for local institution Phonica here. "Still Hope" sees them collaborate with Anthony Anaxagorou, a British born Cypriot award winning poet and essayist. His powerful vocal delivery accompanies the duo's emotive exploration in deepness. They deliver a remix up next in the form of the Secretsundaze Poems In The Heart Floor version, which goes for a second wave Detroit style of vibe. Speaking of which, the Motor City's favorite son Wajeed takes over the B side with two magnificent remixes. The Waajeed Detroit Hardcore dub goes for a massive Panorama Bar style vibe, while the Waajeed Searching dub goes into deeper and more evocative territory for the late night.

Review: Following un-credited releases from Aussie veterans Ewan Jansen and Justin Zerbst, Alex Picone takes a second turn at wearing the shared Seekers pseudonym. On an expansive release, the Italian variously tries his hand at Sheffield bleep/Detroit techno revivalism ("Sounds of a Winter Night", "The Happiness of Being Sad"), spacey deep house ("Slowly Sinking"), and straight-up Motor City positivity ("Pursuit of Pleasure"). The accompanying 7" single boasts the whistling melodies, becalmed chords and clicking drum machine percussion of "Love Intensified By Absence", and the slightly rougher and looser - but no less intergalactic - "Everything Seems Simple Until You Think About It".

Review: Bristolian producer Seka makes his first appearance on local label Alfresco Disco, building on the sound the notorious outdoor party organisers are known for in fine recorded form. "Proto Fish" is an uplifting house transmission of the highest order, while "The First Forest" ramps up the soul factor without losing that playful edge. "Mahalangur" aims instead for a tougher, jacking house sound that provides a variation to the A-side while keeping things soft and sweet. Remixers don't come fresher than Tiago, who turns "Proto Fish" into an ear snagging rumble of off-kilter house par excellence.

Cat: EES 022. Rel: 04 Apr 16
  1. Resistance Through Rituals
  2. Shoc Horracore
  3. Resistance Through Rituals (Space dub)
Review: Richard Sen's last outing on [Emotional] Especial - the bleep revival brilliance of "Songs of Pressure" - was something of a stone cold killer, so hopes are naturally high for this belated follow-up. The title track again digs deep for inspiration, doffing a cap to the starry futurism of Detroit, psychedelic acid and the drum-machine driven jack of early Chicago house. The flipside Dub of the same track takes it into uncharted territory, with hazy, drawn-out chords and post-production effects only serving to emphasize the heavy nature of Sen's vintage groove. Bonus "Shoc Horracore" explores similar territory, while offering a knowing wink towards obscure 1980s horror movie soundtracks and the bold synthesizer lines of Italo-disco.

  3. Bad Meaning Good (7:55)
Review: It's been two years since Richard Sen last treated us to some new music, so this surprise EP - his first for Kim-Ann Foxman's Firehouse label - is well overdue. In its original form, "Flow Master" sits somewhere between new wave-inspired Italo-disco, early Chicago house and the chant-along EBM funk of Nitzer Ebb. It's blessed with a particularly memorable sequenced bassline that naturally comes to the fore at key moments in the track. Foxman delivers a superb, acid-fired remix that's noticeably darker, wilder and closer in tone to '88 style EBM, before Sen peppers a cowbell-heavy drum machine groove with stabbing sub-bass and ice cream van chimes (really) on similarly meaty flipside "Bad Meaning Good".

Review: The latest volume in Rush Hour's Special Series focuses on the work of legendary - if under-appreciated - South African artist Senyaka Kekana, whose 1980s and early '90s output remains a firm favourite of open-minded crate-diggers. The EP brings together two tracks from impossible-to-find albums on 12" for the first time. On the A-side you'll find "Bayanyoyoba", a warm and rolling, chant-laden, mid-tempo deep house cut which originally featured on the artist's cassette-only 1993 set Ma-Gents. Arguably even better - and that's saying something - is flipside cut, "Don't Judge Me Bad", a 1987 soul cut that draws influence from boogie, AOR rock and jazz-funk. Both tracks are superb and well worth heavy rotation.

Review: Everything is pointed in the right direction for UK duo Senzala. Championed by Richie Ahmed and recently affiliated with Catz N Dogz Pets crew, here we find them touching down on exciting new wax-only German stable Downhill with a hefty shimmering slice of deep dubby house. Timeless, textured and lucid in its variation and development it's another sterling, understated cut from the duo. "Skyline" is a touched more restrained again; warm and persistent with organs, the real groove is found in the creeping, rising pads that build subtly throughout. Remix-wise Paolo Rocco ups the drum presence on "Bau" while DJ Honesty adds a little classic Jersey swing to "Skyline". Grab it while it's hot.

Review: DJ Deep and Roman Poncet first launched their collaborative project Sergie Rezza back in 2015 on Desire Records, and now the project makes a welcome return with another dose of utterly stellar deep house concoctions that go beyond the average while maintaining a sense of classicism about them. "Envole" is a sumptuous blend of snaking rhythm, spacious pads and cosy keys, all draped in exotic garms that make this a transcendental house cut to treasure. There are also more adventurous trips into percussive territory on the focused and deadly "Le Reveil," crafty jazz diversions to be soaked up on "Max" and poised ambient pieces "Eclipse" and "Procession" to seal the deal.

Review: The meandering and eccentric press release sent out to promote this release describes newcomer Serious A as: "a charming Parisian astronaut with a charming signature sound". It's a fitting description on a number of counts. Although rooted in smouldering late night deep house of the kind that French producers do so well, many of the electronic sounds and percussion elements showcased across the EP are more readily associated with original Detroit techno. We're particularly enjoying the yearning, early morning shuffle of "Dune 2" and gentle bleep techno influences of the chunkier "Aftermath", though jazzy and bumpy closer "A Festa" is also inspired.

Review: Session Victim return to the Delusions Of Grandeur imprint with their third studio album. Listen To Your Heart is the result of a year of cross-continental scripting which started in their Hamburg studio and wrapped up stateside in San Francisco's Room G Studios where the duo had worked on their 2014 LP See You When You Get There. Here is the second of three LP samplers. "Shadows" gets things rolling with a classic Session Victim groove, looped up pads and hooky spoken vocal samples. Next up we have "Unchained" which drops the BPM for a widescreen, slo-mo jam clouded in a smoky haze with jazzy touches, recalling the halcyon days of Pork Recordings. Flipping over we have a brand new LP version of previous single "Up To Rise", another sublime slice of blissed-out house music with a wonderful organic and live sound palette. Echoing Rhodes licks join the lead guitar tune for a Balearic beauty which will be stuck in your head long after the sun sets. Closing this second sampler we have "Over And Over", which winds things down somewhat for an inspired, bass-led roller.

Review: This 12" marks the debut of Session Victim's new label Pen and Paper, an imprint that appears almost ten years to the day from the duo's first 12" release. Title track "Puzzle" is a little darker, woozier and more intense than much of their work, with ricocheting percussion hits, moody chords and jazzy, jammed-out electric piano motifs rising above a locked-in, late night groove. It's accompanied on side A by a deliciously deep, Twin Peaks-goes-deep-house remix by Giegling regular Vril. Iron Curtis takes control on the B-side, serving up two fresh reworks of Puzzle. Choose between the breakbeat-driven, Balearic-minded deep house positivity of the Broken Flowers mix (B1) and the tactile, spacey and synth-heavy bounce of the classic Detroit techno influenced Passagen Mix.

Review: For over a decade, Eklo head honcho has released on some of the most esteemed minimal house labels such as Minibar, Freak 'N' Chic and Circus Company, in addition to his side project Hold Youth with Le Loup. The Parisian producer has been part of a growing shift in the scene of late, moving from quirky and reductionist micro-house sounds towards classic Detroit aesthetics: and it's these fanciful recreations of classic Detroit sounds on the Acid La Cour EP. Beginning with the Motor City first wave influenced "Sorbet Tamarin", he's then into some deep and dusty 303 business (more suited to the after hours) on "Acid Miami & Les Tantines La Roue". On the flip, the sliver Roland box makes a return on the sublime techno-soul experiment "La Chanson De Gran Mer Kal" reminiscent of early Kenny Larkin or Dan Curtin. Finally on the frantic "Kiltire Beat" we get served to a truly authentic recreation of late '80s hi-tech soul: and it's one hell of a flashback. Tip!

  3. Super Model (3:46)
  4. On The Catwalk (6:27)
  5. To Be Continued (4:57)
Review: The ever-prolific Seven Davis Jr has been thoroughly generous in sharing out his smoky, sensual strain of deep house in recent years, with the dust still settling from his last album. Now he's back with a full tilt five track EP that hints at a new direction to come, embracing the momentum and minimalism of techno without losing the distinctive bump that his music just can't do without. "No Mercy" is a dark, kinetic affair while "Lipstick" gets tougher, funkier and rawer. "Super Model" is a sleazy jam that revolves around a strutting beat and a nasty bassline, with some of Davis Jr's cool and deadly vocals rolling over the top. "On The Catwalk" has a rugged Dance Mania feel to the groove, and then "To Be Continued" spells out that this new, ruffneck direction for Seven Davis Jr has got a future.
