Trigonometry EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: IMO 006. Rel: 27 Feb 17
  1. Metronomia (4:39)
  2. So Much (5:25)
  3. Hibiscus Theatre (4:33)
  4. If You Change Your Mind (4:21)
Review: Ilija Rudman struts out once again on his own turf with this latest slab of sizzling discoid delectability, shaping out all manner of warm and fuzzy grooves across varying tempos and intensities. "Metronomia" is a laid back workout, but it's the bombastic funk of "So Much" that steals the show on the A-side with its crafty construction and killer bass hooks. "Hibiscus Theatre" meanwhile ploughs deeper into the soil with its swirling pads and shimmering percussion lines, and then "If You Change Your Mind" rounds the EP off with some exemplary deep house for the more reflective souls to get down to.

Review: Spotted on his "Pagoda" 12", Zagreb nu disco OG refixes our focus and adds a new lease of life to its velvet keys, warm, measured funk aesthetic and occasional cowbell tickles. Each remix adds a new chapter; Pete Herbert brings a different twist and bigger sweeps to the synths, A Vision Of Panorama Balearic the Dickens out of things with loose legged gliding synths and slo-mo sunset finish while Greene Linez closes the show on a sweet and slinky two-step flex. Something for every occasion. Tip!

  2. Motions (Don Carlos vocal remix)
  3. Motions (Don Carlos Ambient mix)
Review: Is It Balearic? welcome Ilija Rudman back to the fold for the first time since the excellent True Colours album back in 2015, and the Croatian disco house mainstay sounds like he's on searing form. "Motions" is a luscious deep house jam with a throbbing low end, but made all the more powerful by the sultry vocal turn from Andre Espeut. Italo house veteran Don Carlos is a smart shout for two remixes, kicking off with the uplifting yet understated groove of the vocal version before spreading over the B side with the beatless but driving pulse of the ambient mix.

In Her Eyes EP/Presence Mix (1-sided 180 gram vinyl 12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: IMO 005. Rel: 16 Jan 17
  1. In Her Eyes (Presence Deep dub mix) (8:30)
Review: Croatian mainstay Ilija Rudman had a productive 2016 thanks to turns on Chit Chat, Burek and Double Deer, and he turns to his own Imogen Recordings to kick off the new year with a brooding, drum-focused hit of oddball house music for the trippy, paranoid end of the night. The "Presence Deep Dub" mix of "In Her Eyes" is a multi-faceted jam, using high-end processing matched with organic, instinctive percussion to make for the kind of workout that will inspire all manner of curious reactions from the floor. It's a track more than strong enough to stand proud as a one-sided 12", with the crossover appeal to land in a whole host of different bags.

  2. In Her Eyes (Charles Webster No Lies mix) (9:24)
Review: The latest release on Antonio Zuza and Ilija Rudman's IMOGEN label once again features the latter, celebrated Croatian producer and also introduces Andre Espeut. A performer, songwriter and arranger born in London with West Indian, African, French and Spanish heritage, Espeut was raised on a diet of musical goodness. House, rare groove, Latin and Disco among the musical styles that sunk into Espeut's DNA in his formative years, making him the perfect foil for Rudman on this 12", In Her Eyes. Alongside the slowed down vibe of the original version, UK house royalty Charles Webster gets the call to turn in a superb remix for the DJs!

  3. Ilija Rudman - "Distant Feelings" (7:22)
  4. Ilija Rudman - "Deep Sensation" (5:41)
Review: Liverpool based NuNorthern Soul return with a split EP featuring two rising stars in deep house - Croatia's Ilija Rudman and British vocalist/songwriter Andre Espeut - who has been involved within the soul/funk/boogie/disco and house scenes for many years. The EP kicks off in exciting fashion with New York City legend Ron Trent's mix of "Tears To Sound" - injecting that soulful, spiritual and life affirming vibe into the track like he always does! On the flip, Rudman flies solo with a couple of dusty late night mood lighting cuts: the deeply emotive groove of "Distant Feelings" and the lo-slung disco swagger of "Deep Sensation" once again showing off a wide variety in the young producer's repertoire, which has earned him releases on top labels recently such as Ism, Is It Balearic? and his own Imogen Records.

  1. Keep It Up
  2. EndoPlazm (Innabud dub)
  3. Uniform
  4. Mizty Mountain Hop
Review: Having established Salt Mines and appeared on Lost Palms and X-Kalay, Rudolf C has wasted no time in establishing himself as a producer of note in the deep house underground. Now he's stepping up to Sensu with the EndoPlazm EP, showing off yet more of the seductive tones he's been building his name on. "Keep It Up" is a hazy, woozy roller while "EndoPlazm" gets into a tricky acid mindset. "Uniform" is a peppy cut with atmospherics to cool down the snapping drums, and "Mizty Mountain Hop" takes things on a supremely deep tip to round the EP off in fine style.

  2. Young Narcos (5:04)
  3. You Are The One (Mugwump & DC Salas remix) (9:58)
  4. You Are The One (Voxapella) (2:51)
Review: The Tusk Wax crew welcome Ruf Dug and Marcel Vogel to the fold for a right royal hoedown of seedy late night house music machinations. "You Are The One" rides on a bloated bassline and ethereal pads while a guttural vocal chants out the title, making all your sleazy dancefloor dreams come true. "Young Narcos" is a much lighter affair, lacing smooth 80s island boogie into a contemporary setting for an exercise in loose limbed liquid funk. Mugwump & DC Salas come correct on the remix tip, beefing "You Are The One" up into a snarling, acidic romper, and there's also a "Voxapella" of the track slipped on the end of the record for creative mixing delights.

  5. Stranger Than Paradise (Herva remix) (5:08)
Review: Rufus is no stranger to the Bosconi camp, having previously released numerous EPs on their Extra Virgin offshoot. Here he transfers to the main label with a pleasingly varied EP. Each of the four tracks offers something different to discuss, from the skittish, jazz-influenced house breaks, chanted vocals and stretched-out melody lines of "Stranger Than Paradise", to the psychedelic-tinged stomp of wobbly acid track "A Mirage". Elsewhere, "Sleepy Song" is a bouncy but undeniably laid-back deep house cut with subtle disco influences, while Herva's remix of "Stranger Than Paradise" sits somewhere between jazz-jungle, experimental techno, and classic breakbeat house.

Cat: AUTO 025. Rel: 12 Mar 18
  1. Round 2 Reel 1
  2. Round 2 Reel 2
  3. Round 2 Reel 3
Review: Dana Ruh is best known as a figurehead for the mighty Brouqade, but she's equally found on many other labels in the mean time. On this occasion she's brought her distinctive, heavy grooving style to Autoreply for an examination of the artistic process in the shape of one jam, three ways. "Round 2 Reel 1" is the funkiest of the lot, using some killer swing and vibing chords to make for an upbeat, infectious yet still nicely kinked sound. "Round 2 Reel 2" takes things into a more intricate, techy headspace where snaking rhythms interlock with pockets of synth abstraction. "Round 2 Reel 3" continues that theme into a rich, exotic forest of mechanical tones for the adventurous techno trippers to zone out on.

  1. Solstice (intro)

  3. The Wish You Told Me
  4. Got To Work
Review: It's been a fair old while that Dana Ruh has doing her thing, from the inception of her Brouqade imprint through to her debut album on Underground Quality. Giving the vinyl lovers out there a chance to play the music, this first installment taken from the CD gives a perfect overview of the appeal that Ruh holds for house heads. "Solstice" eases things in with an intro tone that promises the grade of deepness you would expect from Underground Quality, before "Don't You Find Me" kicks into action with a snappy broken beat construction, playful keys and sweet chords. "The Wish You Told Me" opts for a more classic kind of deep house construction, while "Got To Work" too trades on moody chords, crisp beats and a hooky vocal lick.

Review: Continuing the vinyl issue of Dana Ruh's debut LP, the high grade deep house just keeps coming on Naturally Part 2. "Education" keeps the energy levels up with some neat interplay between a bubbling, acidic bassline and soulful chord flourishes, all over a snappy 4/4 beat. "My Cave" deviates into more tripped-out broken beat business, all the while anchored by the most soothing of deep house chords. "Jammin" features Underground Quality label boss Jus Ed laying down some subtle vocal contributions which echo out over a smart spread of tones, before "D's Interupt (Dub)" displays the more experimental side to Ruh's output with an abstract beatless loop surrounded by gentle applications of texture.

  1. Train Ride To You

  3. Just Don''t
Review: Jus Ed clearly believes in the music of Dana Ruh, affording the German producer three records over which to spread her album. On this final installment the deep house delicacies don't let up a jot, with "Train Ride To You" leaning all over the A side with its soaring refrain comprised of tender piano and a powerful high-end sustained string. "Dirty Egg" tricks things out a little more with a leftfield, dubby finish to the gently ticking track as disparate swirls and swathes of synth pulse around the frequency range. Finishing up on "Just Don't" brings the album back into focus with the kind of unfussy deep house that largely defines Ruh's style, and a classy style it is too.

  3. Will You Wait For Me
Review: Plastik People call on West Country deep house veteran Andy Compton, who took a leaf through his box of DATs to dig out some previously unreleased jams from the vaults that should get all lovers of classic feel good jams popping with glee. "Sawfunk" is an infectious uptempo jam with a funky edge in the cheeky bassline coursing throughout. "Dark Disc" has a moodier flavour to it, with a bit of that US soul heat rubbed into its loins. "Will You Wait For Me" gets into a twitchy garage swing and holds it down for the duration, organ stabs, DX7 bass and all.

Review: Having made a couple of initial appearances on Groovement a few years back, Helder Russo now re-emerges on Tomorrow Is Now Kid with some effervescent house grooves to impart. "Church Music" in its original form is a truly soul-stirring beast that plies more organ action than you can handle and an endlessly teasing groove to get people shocking out on the floor. Meanwhile the "Floor Mix" gives it to you straight, riding on top of a chunky Nu Groove flavour beat. "New Beat" is a crunchier affair that deals in experimental kinds of percussion and errant synth lines, and "You & Me" rounds the EP out with a floating, synth rich jam for more brooding moments.

Review: Digger doyen S3A makes his debut on Eureka with three jams tailored for these rare warm months. "Doop Doop" flexes around a brilliantly carved backing vocal hook and a killer funk guitar solo in a way that's reminiscent of early Iz & Diz, "Emotional M1" takes us on deeper trip as an ode to one of house music's most influential and iconic synths while "Denials" brings it all together with a slower midtempo break and jazzy flutters so dreamy you'll swear you're wearing your PJs. First up Belarus' favourite sons S80 & Overture present "What's Up" while also on the A side is the rather Summer Of Love sounding "Got To Know" by Kid Mark with its sampled diva vocals, swing fuelled rhythms and hands in the air house chords really doing it. On the flip Rosenhaft's "CCMF" has that classic Frankie Knuckles vibe happening, as does Love Island's "A Feelin'" which takes you all the way back to '92 very convincingly indeed.

Review: Two sides, two continents, all class: LTF, W/Lbl glide into 2018 fashionably late with this deliciously sophisticated 12" from two classically-minded newcomers. Flying Frenchman Sable Blanc lives up to his Balearic tag with two supreme sun-kissed sounds; "Rose Cocktail" is all about the peppy Jersey organs and wily jazz sax while "Bridelice" shuffles with smoky introspective soul. Flip for two vibes from LA's Never Dull. "Friday Night Special" hits with disco vibrancy (and just a smidgeon of jazz sax appeal) while "Jazzin'Disco" filters us deeper into the night with a sublime roll of synths, sax and sunny side feels. Review: Having kicked off 2017 with a fine EP from Mr Beatnick, Tief has turned to an old friend: exiled New Zealander John Sable, who made his debut on the imprint two years ago. Given his close friendship with fellow Kiwis Chaos In The CBD, it's no surprise to find that "Dolphin Hotel" is warm, rich and evocative - a grown up dose of deep house that wraps live instrumentation and heady electronics around a jazz-tinged deep house rhythm. "Gray Paper Moon" is, if anything, even jazzier, with fluid piano lines cascading down over a Nuyorican Soul style drum track. To round things off, Chaos in the CBD sprinkle a little magic dust over the track, turning it into a hypnotic chunk of rolling deep house loveliness.

This time out, fellow label chief Jon Sable gets a chance to shine in collaboration with former Amadeus and Let's Play House artist Huerta. You'll struggle to find another cut quite as instinctively warm and summery as A-side "Alishan Forest Railway", a colourful deep house affair where dreamy chords, cascading electronics and eyes-closed synth solos tumble down over a rubbery, Afro-deep groove. B-side "Housework" is deeper and even more seductive, with the duo utilizing enveloping chords, dreamy pads and yearning synthesizer lines to incredible effect.

  4. Streets Of Love Blaze (7:13)
Review: Maybe it's something to do with Sabre's Portuguese background, but whatever the explanation, this latest release is full of breathy, sun-kissed melodies and ramshackle grooves. It starts with "Cascavel Breeze", where woozy, psychedelic chords unravel over broken down drums and a beat-down rhythm. "Vigilante" is based on the same template, but on this occasion it sees Sabre conjure up jazzy keys and loose drums, against which there is some nonsensical but hugely enjoyable vocal wittering. "Ghetto Prophet" is the main dance floor track and features a searing bass fused with dreamy melodies, but the standout track is "Streets Of Love - Blaze". It sees Sabre lay down a hypnotic deep techno pulse to which he adds freeform synth lines and cosmic pan pipes.

Review: Sad City's debut album was an absolute delight to behold when it landed late last year, and this remix package on Emotional Response does a great service to the quality of the original by offering up some truly outstanding new versions from impeccable talent. DJ Nature is one of the greats of heads down, dusty house, and his smoky handling of "Steady Jam" draws you in across two blissful versions that adorn the A side. On the flip, "Pace, Movements I-IV" gets a beautifully bubbly acid treatment from HOLOVR, and Herron plunges "Rain" into a murky bath of leftfield techno.

Review: All City's Pear label, Dublin's current finest in the deep house game, comes through with its first collaborative release, a six-track monster carrying all sorts of enchanting synth sounds for the mind. Sage's opener is the perfect companion to an early morning beach set, while Plush Throw's "Plushwoshback" adds in a little quirkiness to the groove, and CLI's remix of "User" by CHMMR lays down a neat little piano house groove for the lovers. The flipside kicks off with Brien's "Convertible Woman", a suave and laid-back house groover, whereas Noah Skelton's dubby minimal techno on "Looped Reflections" makes for a refreshing breath of air, and "Delish89" from Candles ends on an utterly vibeing bit of balearic boogie for the soul. Delicious.

  3. Oral Deep - "Another Way" (Oral Deep dub) (6:53)
Review: In terms of old-school nostalgia and resurrection, the Tribe label is killing it on all fronts at the moment - hands down! Just in time for the end of 2017, the crew come through with the second volume of The Dub I Lost, once again with the help of the most legendary and enigmatic producers to have graced the house scene. First up, Say & Rabone's "Avenue Of Dreams" is tweaked and re-worked from the master himself, Chicago's Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers, who delivers one of his wondrous journeys over the entirety of the A-side. The flip launches Alex Finkin's Vanina Project with a mesmerising house escapade by the name of "Im Leaving", presenters to us in its dub version, and Oral Deep's "Another Way", again a dub mix of the original cut, provides a solid, punchy house attack with a boastful bottom-end. Solid house groovers for all purposes.

  4. Feels Good (5:35)
Review: Better Listen's latest signing is dusty-fingered producer Saint Paul, who impressed us greatly with his debut single on Moonrise Hill Material this time last year. There's a wonderfully summery feel throughout, starting with the lilting horns, fluttering flute loops and Brazilian disco-flecked deep house shuffle of superb title track "Naturist Behaviour". Other highlights include the elongated, alien-sounding synthesizer lines and squeezable deep house/jazz-funk fusion of "A Hawaiian Trip" and the suitably deep, soulful and heady warmth of "Feels Good". He's also included a tasty '80s boogie/soul revision entitled "Tell Me", which sounds like the kind of glassy-eyed jam you'll be hearing an awful lot at outdoor parties this summer.

  1. Me Time
  2. Feels Like
  3. Raw Meat
  4. Grief
Review: Hailing from Knoxville, Tennessee, Saint Thomas LeDoux makes his vinyl debut here with the ever-essential Finale Sessions. The label alone should give you an idea of the vibe on this record, where Detroit-inspired deep house with soul, flair and grit gets steered in intriguing new directions. So it goes on LeDoux's first outing, kicking off with the dazzling chord trickery of "Me Time" before "Feels Like" nestles down into a broken beat groove sprinkled with gorgeous arpeggios. "Raw Meat" takes a dramatic turn into a more global, percussive sound world with stunning results, and then "Grief" simmers things down with a home-listening cut loaded with craft FX processes and a jazzy demeanor to offset the artistic distortion.

  3. The Moody Blues
Review: Leigh Darlow and Matthew Bandy have got plenty of experience in the world of deep house, both individually and as Saison. Building on a solid run of releases for Papa Records, the project makes its vinyl debut on Guesthouse with some undeniably catchy jams for the peak of the night. "Please Don't Go" is a cool slice of party fodder that hinges on a classic soul vocal hit, while "Do You" gets a little more choppy in the mix with yet more recognisable licks that should get the masses sweating and swaying without needing to resort to a hectic tempo. "The Moody Blues" lets the keys do the talking, while yet another of the hefty grooves Saison craft so well rolls out underneath.
