  1. Tomato Pope (6:08)
  2. Ocaj (4:52)
  3. Rhodes House (2:25)
Review: British house hero now based in Berlin Red Rack 'Em returns for his always impressive Bergerac imprint with some properly deep and funky house jams on the Tomato Pope EP. Starting out with the dusty and choppy syncopations of the stomping title track, there's more quality to be found on the cheeky B side cut "Ocaj" with its woozy and hilarious vocal cut ups over a slow and rusty stomp with hazy wah wah guitar. Finally "Rhodes House" does exactly what it says on the tin with this short but sweet exercise in deepness that takes its cues from the imitable Moodymann. Following up some great tracks recently for the likes of Nettles and Nsyde, Danny Berman's on a roll at the moment!

  1. AlbadaRE (7:20)
  2. Orgy Of The Dead (6:21)
  3. X (6:20)
Review: Old school purist retro house sounds with a mandatory side serving of acid and all done rather respectfully and most of all convincingly. Limited release of 300 hand stamped copies, this is the union of Parisian/London based underground house labels Soleil De Nuit and Signatune. This London based producer has appeared previously on Parisian imprints such as Djebali and Robsoul which should give you an idea of what this guy's is about: raw, funky, dusty and loopy deepness. On the A side is the smooth and hypnotic groove of "AlbadaRE", while on the flip it's all about "X" which is the kind of dark and sexy swing fuelled house on the minimal tip, that you could imagine Daniel Bell playing in some dark Detroit basement at 6AM.

  1. Camille's Dab (6:51)
  2. Motha Supastar (7:19)
Review: Since last starring on Robsoul midway through 2016, Parisian turntablist-turned-deep house producer Reda Dare has been busy. He first shared a 12" with French legend Chris Carrier before launching his own REda dare [sic] label. Now he returns to Robsoul with a no-nonsense, club-friendly two tracker that sits somewhere between deep house and the currently hyped Parisian tech-house sound. A-side "Camille's Dab" is a perfect example of this, with the producer layering warm electric piano chords, U.S garage style melodic flourishes and cut-up vocal samples over a sleazy tech-house bassline, rising acid lines and bumpin', peak-time beats. Flipside "Motha Superstar" follows a similar sonic blueprint, with dreamy deep house chords and pads drifting in and out of an otherwise typically Parisian tech-house track.

  1. Pressure Box
  2. Azikiwe
Review: A second release of the year for the emergent Common Dreams label sees Reedale Rise producer Simon Keat join the fold with a pair of thoughtful, pensive deep house cuts. Lead track "Pressure Box" is the track with a sense of unpredictable funk, giving us juicy chords, starry-eyed pads and an overall nice atmosphere with the drums moving ever forward. The B-side "Azikiwe" fuses sporadic arpeggiations with some very thoughtful chord melodies. Maybe it could be described as having a more psychedelic twist. Another fine house record from the Common Dreams team.

  1. Love Is (feat Billy Love - original vocal mix)
  2. Love Is (feat Billy Love - Bluesy vocal mix)
  3. Wurli Things (feat Jacopo Moschetto - original mix)
Review: Having previously appeared on Roots Underground, Reekee kicks off Wrong Notes with yet more grooves that tap into the spirit of truly passionate soulful house. The aptly named Billy Love's vocals aim straight for the heart on "Love Is", with the original mix being especially moving with its lingering jazz chords, string licks and stuttering beat. The "Bluesy" mix has a more traditional deep house feel to it, while "Wurli Things" heads off into expressive Rhodes territory thanks to limber keys work from Jacopo Moschetto. For classically informed house music from the heart, look no further.

  3. Antholoy (Sophisticado remix) (9:51)
Review: Former Uzzuri and Wrong Notes man Reekee (AKA Italian producer Riccardo Massi) pops up on Anma. Like many of his previous releases, "Anthology" offers a sumptuous and quietly soulful take on U.S deep house, with spacey synth solos, jangling pianos and meandering organ lines stretching out across a luscious house groove. His original version is accompanied on the A-side by a fine rub from Chicagoan Ricardo Mirando, who re-imagines the track as a bustling chunk of Kaidi Tatham style broken beat/deep house/jazz-funk fusion. Turn to side B for the epic Sophisticado Remix, a luscious and jazzy deep house roller rich in thickset boogie bass, Pat Metheny style freestyle vocals and glistening jazz guitar solos.

  2. No One Else (original vocal mix feat Erik Rico)
  3. Tortellini Jazz (original mix feat Paolo Campani)
Review: Fully tapped into the true US tradition of soulful house music, Riccardo Masi has been delivering the goods for the past couple of years to labels like Uzuri and his own Wrong Notes Records. On this new single the good vibes just keep on flowing, kicking off with Erik Rico's on-point vocal draped over "Reaching". Rico also forms the centre point of "No One Else", another masterclass in pattering drums and honey-coated keys. "Tortellini Jazz" shores up on the B-side, drafting in Paolo Campani to lay down some sultry sax tones over the mellow chords and playful Rhodes trills.

First released all the way back in 1988 and Saunderson's Incognito label, this 12" has been fully remastered for 2014 ears and contains the original, dub and acapella versions of the cult classic "Just Want Another Chance" with THAT bassline sounding all the more influential. There's also a grip of five killer rhythm tools on the flip! If you don't already own this slice of Detroit techno history do not pass up this chance!

  1. REKchampa - "Fried Chicken Skin" (5:46)
  2. REKchampa & Personal Trainer - "Ride" (4:42)
Review: Andrew Morgan's Peoples Potential Unlimited label may well have been founded to document the lost and forgotten funk, disco and boogie that peppered the DIY and private press labels of 1980s USA, but their contemporary releases are just as good. See 12"s from the likes of Legowelt, Beautiful Swimmers and Pender Street Steppers for evidence. Fried Chicken Skin adds to this small but deadly canon of contemporary PPU releases, presenting one of two records on the label from Stefan "Rekchampa" Ringer, a Stockbridge, Atlanta-based producer who got his break in late 2014 thanks to Kai Alce's NDATL label. "Fried Chicken Skin" is a bumping, rough US house delight replete with ad-libbing vocals from Ringer himself, whilst "Ride" sees him collaborate with Personal Trainer for a more reduced, deeper cut that will appeal to Sound Signature fans.

Review: While Lee Renacre may not be instantly familiar to tech house heads these days, the man has been heavily involved since the early 90s. Now back with a new impetus to engage with the contemporary scene and show the kids how its done, Renacre has launched Modugroove as a vehicle for his more recent modular-minded jams. Most of these fly under the banner of 100Hz, which Renacre has been recording as for a long time, but the opening track on Modulation EP 01 sees the emergence of a new collaborative project, Junction Chaos. Whatever the source, these tracks ooze class and sophistication, using deft sound design and subtle grooves to produce head turning club tracks.

Review: As swathes of DJs and dancers get ever more into classic and niche electro from the 90s, Groovepressure has reformed to bring back some of its highly sought-after releases and keep the Discogs sharks at bay. With a fresh re-master and some new mixes to boot, the label makes a wise choice for its third reissue by picking up the record they first put out, Resonators' "Shuzzbuzz". The original mix and its B side "Booma" sound better than ever with a bit of modern spit 'n' polish, but then Robin Ball's electro and house versions of "Shuzzbuzz" push the classic into exciting new realms without losing that all-important old-skool flavour.

Review: Melbourne artist Retza's star remains in the ascent as he touches down on fellow deep-down-under HQ Lo-Fi-45 with two more delicate and beautiful house grooves. "Eta Carinae" takes us on an astral trip with lilting keys and subtle strings while "Polar" applies the breaks for a more broken, introspective journey into the shadows of the dance where warm bass and warped textures await. Remix-wise "Eta Carinae" goes under the knife twice: Pezzner adds a little glock-knocking bump while Matt Waters garnishes it with a soft focus haze. Arresting.

  1. Venus In Scorpio (4:37)
  2. 3rd Layer (6:23)
  3. Gun Romance (5:34)
Review: Gunnar Wendel's Ominira label swing back into the line of sight for their first release of the year and it finds the excellent Noleian Reusse at the helm. Known for his ongoing Africans With Mainframes project alongside Jamal Moss, Reusse does possess a small but deadly solo discography for Mathematics, Love What You Feel and his own Black Tekno label. Given that this Ominira 12" is also called Black Tekno, it's evidently a concept that is close to Reusse. Across the three tracks, the US producer really shows his range, with "Venus In Scorpio" a quite dreamy opener that pairs up lazy acid lines with loose limbered drums and yearning chords. Following this, "3rd Layer" veers off into fidgeting and unpredictable 303 madness whilst "Gun Romance" strips back proceedings for a more abstract finale.

Review: The Revenge has been busy. His latest LP with Craig Smith as 6th Borough Project recently dropped on Roar Groove, in addition to his remix of Auntie Flo's "Waiting for a (Woman)". He also relocated from Scotland to Denmark and his collaboration with Dirt Crew featuring Nachtbraker remixes was one of the label's biggest records of 2016. Amongst the action, he's taken the time to create a more in your face approach to create his latest EP: a four-tracker of proper club tracks. Starting off with the uplifting deep house of "Every Night" with its irresistible disco tinge, he is then into the sultry late night groove of "Grit". On the flip, things take a trippier and slightly darker turn on the sleek tech house of "Krokodile" with its killer bassline that has just got to be heard.

Review: Leon Revol is a producer from Bordeaux, France. Formerly known as Leonid. (with a full stop) some of you may know him from his releases on labels such as personal and Boutade Musique. Under his birth name this will mark his second release since last year. On the A side we've got the deep, jazzy and soulful jam "Far With A Van" which kinda reminds us of those summery jams from the early noughties by Ian Pooley and St Germain. Also on offer is the sublime and ethereal with its reversed guitars semi-showgaze style, dusty beats and all round emotive elements bound to get some smiley faces on the dancefloor. On the flip an honorable mention to the dubby and hypnotic bliss of "St James" which takes it down a notch or two in great style.

Review: Solal Reyes is another talented French producer to add to the list of house heads to watch in 2017. Joining up with the equally promising Mr KS, Reyes presents a debut EP that will only be available to those willing to buy the wax, and hot damn is it worth it. Lead track "ESO 350-40" is a loose and limber funker of a house jam with all kinds of playful, but utterly cool elements at play. The same could be said of "Terminal Sud" where the rubbery bass and snappy shuffle will get bodies popping from the front to the back of the room. "Haxo Station" has a slightly edgier lilt to its bounce, and then "Batiment Cour" drops the swing for a straight up strut through razor sharp tech house on what is a stunning first release for Reyes.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!!! Matlock's finest Rhythm Plate resurface brandishing a new label in Pressed For Time, and what better way to inaugurate it than revisiting one of their key tracks. Released back in 2002 on the Mantis label run by Atjazz, "Lean Part 2" was a wonderfully sleazy slab of deepness notable for the lascivious vocal hook that hung slinkily over the production throughout. It still sounds superb some 13 years on and is backed with an unreleased version that was done in the same period, along with deliciously freaky new "Leaner" mix from the pair.

Review: After a geographically imposed hiatus (the travel links between Nottingham and Hong Kong are intermittent to say the least) Pressed For Time label bosses Rhythm Plate are back with a new project featuring Massive Attack/Presence vocalist Sarah Jay. The original mix of 'No More' is a moody house roller with some trademark Rhythm Plate chord progressions and speaker thumping bass frequencies. Using chopped up licks of Sarah Jay's vocal to introduce the groove it subtly segues into the main vocal and then builds to a euphoric climax complete with strings and synth flourishes. The Goshawk (50% Rhythm Plate DNA) Vocal Flight treads a more New Jersey deep garage vibe with swinging hats, lush warm chords, bumping bassline and chopped up sax. One for the late night, locked in crew. Homepark (Ornate/Third Strike) go for a more party vibe with tougher drums and a Mr Fingers style bassline. A proper dub mix if you will. Finally, Mad Maxx Traxx are baxxx on PFT with a speaker damaging Dance Mania style drum track. No messing. Rumour has it there may be some more of 'No More' watch this space.

Review: "It's not often you get to work with vocalists of Sarah Jay's calibre (Massive Attack/Presence) so here at PFT we decided to enlist some heavyweight talent to make the most of this opportunity. Kicking off the second EP we have the one and only Rob Mello (Classic/Defected/Crosstown Rebels) on remix duties. To say we are excited about this is an understatement (we are very excited). The No Ears Vocal mix is a proper anthem with elements of deep house, 80s boogie and nu-disco to these ears. Matt RiVEM aka Goshawk is up next with a 110bpm disco mix complete with chunky drums, Chic style live guitar (thanks Martyn Bentley!) and signature chord progressions. Real nice warm up/calm down tackle with enough oomph to be played LOUD. Ant Plate turns in a phenomenal YSE Saint Laur'ant reversion that channels house (obviously), punk funk and dub disco into a floor filling underground monster. Some particularly interesting drum fills and percussion take the track to another level. Finally, Situation come complete with a delicious live broken beat number in radio edit format. Think Schmoov/Atjazz era DIY and you are there or thereabouts."

  1. YSE - "99% Invisible"
  2. YSE Saint Laur'Ant - "When You Love Me"
  3. Rhythm Plate - "I Think I've Dreamed This Before"
Review: Rhythm Plate's re-emergence through their Pressed For Time label continues apace on this second release, a split 12" that pairs a new cut from Matlock's finest with solo productions from Ant Plate as YSE and YSE Saint Laurent. Hissy warehouse beats, simple chord vamps and Rapturous oh-vocals characterise YSE's dryish yet muscular "99% Invisible", whilst Plate's YSE Saint Laurent contribution "When You Love Me" pairs some R&B vocal sampling with drawn out synths and wispy percussion placed on top of a grooving bassline similar to Bernard Badie's '09 Mojuba hit "Move To The Beat". Rhythm Plate's submission, "I Think I've Dreamed This Before" adds a warming calmness to the EP, allowing a spirited synth line to traverse its arrangement like a geisha float-walking through an Japanese garden of snowy arpeggios and moss covered basslines.

Review: Metropolita recordings is a label based in London, founded as an outlet for the recordings of Riccardo Buccirossi - who also happens to run the Imprints label that has released work by legends such as 100Hz and Ivan Iacobucci. Riccardo himself clearly has a penchant for the old-school sounds of classic techno and electro, as heard on the All Things Are One EP. "Urania" features a nice contrast between the clang and clatter of analogue drum computers and sampled latin polyrhythms - all sandwiched between the blips and bleeps. Additionally on the flip, you can hop aboard the acid express for the tripped out "Eroma" or be hypnotised by some mad Juno 106 action on the wacky "Ianoda".

Review: In case his chosen artistic moniker isn't clear enough, we can confirm that producer Richard Galling is from Milwaukee. All joking aside, his previous workouts on Jolly Jams have all been exemplary, so we're expecting big things from "Break Free". Thrillingly, his original version is something of a sweaty and sleazy peak-time treat, with Galling layering Denise Burton's classic house style vocals and meandering organ lines atop waves of TB-303 acid lines, sharp rave stabs and a particularly dirty, arpeggio style bassline. Speaking of organ lines, these are brought to the fore on the Mood 2 Swing-ish "Break Free (Organ)", while the flipside boasts a cheeky and rather good re-edit of "Clear Water" by sometime Classic co-founder and Freaks producer Luke Solomon.
