Review: Chicago's Tony Rainwater delivers a great full length after impressive appearances on Hamburg's Lehult last year. The Rockberry Jam EP is actually his solo debut for the label and is a 'thick, crunchy concoction of sweet and sample-heavy grooves'. Each track was recorded live, according to the American artist, who claims that his production methods involved realtime sampling of his music collection via iTunes, alongside additional loops ripped from vinyl; also employing a spontaneous methodology. "The record is really like my record collection randomly coming together above a kick drum."

Review: Under the tutelage of founders Irfan 'Rainy' Hussain and Cyril 'Rex' Lyons, Rainy City Music has been contributing to Manchester's vibrant music scene for two decades, essentially adapting with the times into the digital age. As part of their 20th anniversary celebrations the label have issued this new 12" featuring four tracks by Irfan and Rex Leon, all lifted from their previously digital-only album. "Vodun (The Calling)" is simply tribal house music for lovers of the old school Jovonn sound, whilst "Smash The Silence (Afrobeat Power)" is a brand new version of previous digital only release where afro-beat and house combine for a MAW style dancefloor groove. Flip to the B-side and we have "Snoop's Story (Ode To The Wire)," which merges samples of the cult HBO show with '90s style NYC house, whilst "Manc Union Dub" pairs up ghostly Brazilian Candomble vibes with Rhythm & Sound.

Review: Hailing from the mists of the early 90s UK techno scene, Ramjac Corporation's "Cameroon Massif!" epitomises everything great about the anything goes spirit of the scene prior to firm genre boundaries being established. Emotional Rescue have done the right thing and brought the vintage curio back to light, and what a return it is. While it shows its age, it sounds in fine fettle, all rolling breaks, trancey zaps and mysterious vocal hooks that positively draw you into a transcendental rave headspace. Both the "Massive" and "Massing" mixes are essential, but then you also get the added bonus of a live version from a reunion gig back in 2009.

  4. Peace (1:56)
Review: Three years on from his last solo outing, former Innerzone Orchestra member Paul Randolph returns to action with a very special 12" on Moodymann's Mahogani Music imprint. In its original form, "Not Gonna Let" is something of a deep and soulful treat: a head-nodding, dancefloor-friendly modern soul gem full of twinkling piano lines and heart-aching vocals. It's accompanied by two fine remixes. The first, from Charles Webster, begins as a deep, ambient soul cut, before slowly flowering into a shuffling deep house treat. Dez Andres, on the other hand, emphasizes the track's organic instrumentation further, delivering a superb rework that sits somewhere between deep house, hip-hop and modern boogie.

  4. Reset (5:51)
  5. Vessel (5:46)
Review: On this fine EP, Alan Abrahams - best known for his releases as Portable and Bodycode - dons a new alias, Ranger, to explore his South African roots. In practice, that means fusing contributions from a range of guest musicians - township acapella vocal group Korus, Cameroonian bassist Stan, Parisian saxophonist Chisnea and plenty more besides - with warm and toasty rhythms that variously touch on Soutrh African house, jazz-funk, boogie and modern soul. It's a formula that results in a string of fine workouts, from the ethereal disco-soul warmth of "Normalizo" and organic deep house bliss of "Reset", to the rubbery broken beat brilliance of "Vessel" and sublime, saucer-eyed opener "Bazonkonwaba".

  1. Yamato (7:11)
  2. Odd Regrets (6:33)
  3. Just For You (7:26)
  4. Early Korn (5:22)
Review: Christopher Rau's latest outing on Smallville - his sixth in total, including two albums - is a particularly jolly affair, boasting a quartet of tried-and-tested cuts. There's something extra-cheery about opener "Yamato", where jammed-out organ riffs combine perfectly with a darting synth bassline and unfussy drum machine hits. "Odd Regrets" is a sweatier deep house drum jam, while "Just For You" reinvents rave-era piano house for the bass music generation. Finally, "Early Korn" is a picturesque and hazy deep house jam full of tumbling melodies and chiming electronics. All four tracks are excellent, suggesting that this is an EP that may stay in your record box for a while.

  3. NC 17 - "Gasoline Or Dettol" (6:46)
  4. Mezigue & Christopher Rau - "Honk For Peace" (3:08)
Review: In support of the joys of teamwork, Smallville regular Christopher Rau has launched Totally Together, a new label committed to releasing collaborations between producers. He handles the first 12" himself, joining forces with a succession of artists across four fine tracks. The A-side boasts two hook-ups with Chicago's Hakim Murphy; the sweaty, jackin' drum machine beats and wayward electronics of "Floorz Hop", and the bass-heavy deep house wooziness of "Again Agin" [sic]. On the flip, Rau joins forces with Nathan Jonson as NC 17, delivering the ghetto-house influenced Chi-town bump of "Gasoline or Dettol" (think winding synth horns, crunchy drum machine handclaps and throbbing sub-bass), before laying down the ultra-deep, ultra-melodious "Carrier" alongside Mezigue.

Review: Way back in 1992, John Mateo and Eddie Matos - then in the flush of youth and still establishing themselves as top-drawer deep house producers - donned the Raw Elements alias and released Back 2 Bay Six. 25 years on, the EP has been given the reissue treatment by the on-point Flash Forward camp. Musically, it remains one of the deepest, dubbiest and most alluring EPs in the duo's epic back catalogue. For proof, check the rolling organs, stripped-back percussion, huggable bass and impassioned vocal samples of "Back 2 Day Six", the jazzy swing of "Sax 5th Avenue" and the breezy basement bounce of standout closer "On The Train", whose off-kilter rhythm is particularly inviting.

Review: There's something especially magical about "Besakih's Dragon's Clouds", the gentle, melodious and chiming lead cut from Giorgio Bacchin's latest outing under the Raw M.T alias. More akin to Steve Reich's "Music For 18 Musicians" after a night mainlining loved-up narcotics than a throbbing dancefloor banger, it brilliantly sets the tone for what follows. "Banjar Hot Springs" is a breezy, melodious and tactile chunk of dreamy deep house cheeriness, "Ulluwatu's God" a melodically intricate but rhythmically hypnotic chugger, and "Broken Sea" a stylistically accurate tribute to the wavy days of Italian ambient house (albeit with a few nods towards likeminded Japanese producers from the same period).

  1. Soothe Me (6:17)
  2. Relaxin' At The Flip (6:07)
Review: This special one off collaboration sees young gun native Berliner prodigy Max Graef, coupled with globe trotter Fantastic Man aka Mic Newman. With Mic living in Max's broom cupboard for a few vodka soaked weeks in Berlin this autumn, there was a beautiful inevitability that some music would outcome. The lead track "Soothe Me" is no noodly shrinking violet, but a grade 10-cross-genre-dance-floor-destroyer which Andy snapped up for label on first listen. Clearly taking it's inspiration from the Rhodes and sample drenched Sound Signature Detroit label and adding in live instrumentation, tape effects, for a track rich in Steely Dan sensibility, coupled with a sub bass and twisted lead line dragging us into a new year. The B-Side Relaxin' At The Flip is a raw slab of analogue goodness, flying 606 high hats, a tough kick drum and simple elements driving the track forwards, best heard 8am in a dark corner of a club.

Review: David Cabanne (no, another one!) is based in Bordeaux, France. The young producer has released for Waxtefacts Records and Khasia Hills Records previously but now for Brighton based house heroes Wolf Music. On the A side, we have the dusty and disco-fied deepness of "Here I Am" and "Freshly Squeezed" respectively which utilise rusty and skittering old drumcomputer patterns with tastefully borrowed diva vocal samples to stunning effect. On the flip, the solemn and emotive "Flip The Script" closes out this fine little EP out in style.

  3. Rhodes House (2:25)
Review: British house hero now based in Berlin Red Rack 'Em returns for his always impressive Bergerac imprint with some properly deep and funky house jams on the Tomato Pope EP. Starting out with the dusty and choppy syncopations of the stomping title track, there's more quality to be found on the cheeky B side cut "Ocaj" with its woozy and hilarious vocal cut ups over a slow and rusty stomp with hazy wah wah guitar. Finally "Rhodes House" does exactly what it says on the tin with this short but sweet exercise in deepness that takes its cues from the imitable Moodymann. Following up some great tracks recently for the likes of Nettles and Nsyde, Danny Berman's on a roll at the moment!

Review: Old school purist retro house sounds with a mandatory side serving of acid and all done rather respectfully and most of all convincingly. Limited release of 300 hand stamped copies, this is the union of Parisian/London based underground house labels Soleil De Nuit and Signatune. This London based producer has appeared previously on Parisian imprints such as Djebali and Robsoul which should give you an idea of what this guy's is about: raw, funky, dusty and loopy deepness. On the A side is the smooth and hypnotic groove of "AlbadaRE", while on the flip it's all about "X" which is the kind of dark and sexy swing fuelled house on the minimal tip, that you could imagine Daniel Bell playing in some dark Detroit basement at 6AM.

  1. Camille's Dab (6:51)
  2. Motha Supastar (7:19)
Review: Since last starring on Robsoul midway through 2016, Parisian turntablist-turned-deep house producer Reda Dare has been busy. He first shared a 12" with French legend Chris Carrier before launching his own REda dare [sic] label. Now he returns to Robsoul with a no-nonsense, club-friendly two tracker that sits somewhere between deep house and the currently hyped Parisian tech-house sound. A-side "Camille's Dab" is a perfect example of this, with the producer layering warm electric piano chords, U.S garage style melodic flourishes and cut-up vocal samples over a sleazy tech-house bassline, rising acid lines and bumpin', peak-time beats. Flipside "Motha Superstar" follows a similar sonic blueprint, with dreamy deep house chords and pads drifting in and out of an otherwise typically Parisian tech-house track.

Review: Having previously appeared on Roots Underground, Reekee kicks off Wrong Notes with yet more grooves that tap into the spirit of truly passionate soulful house. The aptly named Billy Love's vocals aim straight for the heart on "Love Is", with the original mix being especially moving with its lingering jazz chords, string licks and stuttering beat. The "Bluesy" mix has a more traditional deep house feel to it, while "Wurli Things" heads off into expressive Rhodes territory thanks to limber keys work from Jacopo Moschetto. For classically informed house music from the heart, look no further.

Review: Fully tapped into the true US tradition of soulful house music, Riccardo Masi has been delivering the goods for the past couple of years to labels like Uzuri and his own Wrong Notes Records. On this new single the good vibes just keep on flowing, kicking off with Erik Rico's on-point vocal draped over "Reaching". Rico also forms the centre point of "No One Else", another masterclass in pattering drums and honey-coated keys. "Tortellini Jazz" shores up on the B-side, drafting in Paolo Campani to lay down some sultry sax tones over the mellow chords and playful Rhodes trills.

  2. It's Alrigh (Otwo Reconstruction mix) (7:25)
Review:
Italian deep house producer Reekee returns to his own Wrong Notes label with another trip through beautifully rendered, highly musical soulful house. It's little wonder he has been snapped up by labels like Uzuri in the past. "It's Alright" is a track with huge crossover appeal, tapping into the kind of expressive keys that should sit right with soul heads as much as house devotees. The vocals add to the soaring melodic content, making this a life-affirming jam perfect for creating unforgettable, unifying dancefloor moments. Otwo gets busy with the track on the B-side, turning out a daring remix that spaces the core ingredients out with more than a little guidance from the Theo Parrish school of deep-rooted experimentation.

Shaun Reeves and Tuccillo have been doing their thing for long enough to know how to throw down a surefooted deep groover, and that's just what you get with "Smile". Meanwhile The Mole does a sterling job of working some complex percussion into the bones of the track and creating a hypnotic, understated version that will appeal to the freakier end of the floor.

Sunsets and Sublets is a typically colourful and herb-powered affair, with Carman and collaborators (old pal Sophie Sweetland and Hashman DJ being the highest profile) laying down cuts that variously mix and match elements of bumpin' U.S garage, blazed Vancouver deep house, loved-up synth-pop, sunset-ready slo-jams, horizontal ambient mood-scapes and lo-fi R&B.

Review: Andrew Morgan's Peoples Potential Unlimited label may well have been founded to document the lost and forgotten funk, disco and boogie that peppered the DIY and private press labels of 1980s USA, but their contemporary releases are just as good. See 12"s from the likes of Legowelt, Beautiful Swimmers and Pender Street Steppers for evidence. Fried Chicken Skin adds to this small but deadly canon of contemporary PPU releases, presenting one of two records on the label from Stefan "Rekchampa" Ringer, a Stockbridge, Atlanta-based producer who got his break in late 2014 thanks to Kai Alce's NDATL label. "Fried Chicken Skin" is a bumping, rough US house delight replete with ad-libbing vocals from Ringer himself, whilst "Ride" sees him collaborate with Personal Trainer for a more reduced, deeper cut that will appeal to Sound Signature fans.

  1. Shuzzbuzz (Robin Ball Electro mix) (7:17)
  2. Shuzzbuzz (original re-master) (5:50)
  3. Shuzzbuzz (Robin Ball House mix) (6:16)
  4. Booma (original re-master) (5:05)
Review: As swathes of DJs and dancers get ever more into classic and niche electro from the 90s, Groovepressure has reformed to bring back some of its highly sought-after releases and keep the Discogs sharks at bay. With a fresh re-master and some new mixes to boot, the label makes a wise choice for its third reissue by picking up the record they first put out, Resonators' "Shuzzbuzz". The original mix and its B side "Booma" sound better than ever with a bit of modern spit 'n' polish, but then Robin Ball's electro and house versions of "Shuzzbuzz" push the classic into exciting new realms without losing that all-important old-skool flavour.

  1. Eta Carinae (5:53)
  2. Eta Carinae (Pezzner remix) (8:30)
  3. Polar (7:13)
  4. Eta Carinae (Matt Waters remix) (7:44)
Review: Melbourne artist Retza's star remains in the ascent as he touches down on fellow deep-down-under HQ Lo-Fi-45 with two more delicate and beautiful house grooves. "Eta Carinae" takes us on an astral trip with lilting keys and subtle strings while "Polar" applies the breaks for a more broken, introspective journey into the shadows of the dance where warm bass and warped textures await. Remix-wise "Eta Carinae" goes under the knife twice: Pezzner adds a little glock-knocking bump while Matt Waters garnishes it with a soft focus haze. Arresting.
