  3. Sasha Anastasov - "Sea For Two" (6:09)
  4. Gayana - "Since The Night" (Klar&PF remix) (5:25)
Review: Pole Jam Vinyl - a wax-only collaboration between Satin Jackets' Glam Jam Artists and Welsh outfit Pole Position Recordings - is always a reliable source of club-ready nu-disco fare. There's naturally much to admire on the label's latest multi-artist EP. Pioneerball kicks things off with the cheery and musically expansive "Deltaplane" - all flailing slap bass, delay-laden hits, sparkling electronics and sharp strings - before Falqo steps up with a chunk of boogie-influenced blue-eyed soul (the deliciously positive "Across The Sea"). On the flip you'll find the pitched down, Balearic minded dub disco of Sasha Anastov's "Sea For Two", and the near horizontal soul smoothness of Gayana's "Since The Night (Klar&PF Mix)".

Sneak Attack (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: UNI 1003. Rel: 22 Feb 16
  1. Sneak Attack (10:14)
  2. Random Acts Of Insanity (8:19)
Review: Amid whispers of a new album from Unirhythm boss and Three Chairs stalwart Marcellus Pittman, two tracks from his excellent debut LP Pieces finally get committed to wax. It's a shame Pieces never got a vinyl release, but the chance to grip "Sneak Attack" and "Random Acts Of Insanity" on 12" should not be passed up. This 12" was actually released in 'blink and you'll miss it' white label format in 2014, but finally gets a proper issue! For those that don't have the LP, "Sneak Attack" is a curious concoction, with Syclops style electronics occasionally flowering over deep, dusty, intricately programmed rhythms. "Random Acts Of Insanity" feels a little bolder in approach, though its' rich chords and odd, off-kilter rhythm track are contrasted with some notably bonkers electronic touches.

  1. Revenge For Nothing (8:38)
  2. Red Dogon Star (7:34)
Review: We were somewhat surprised to discover that Revenge For Nothing is Marcellus Pittman's first 12" single for nearly three years. We were even more surprised when we heard the title track, a fantastically druggy, drum machine-heavy concoction that sounds like a long lost collaboration between the early house pioneers of Chicago and their techno counterparts in Detroit. The sparse but heavyweight feel of the track is matched by the trippy, low-slung simplicity of flipside "Red Dogon Star", where a kick-drum dominated rhythm track is peppered with fuzzy, jammed-out analogue bass, Yorkshire bleeps and mind-altering electronics.

  1. A Dream (Something Like) (6:38)
  2. There's Somebody Out There (Jamie:326 edit) (8:03)
  3. Breath Beat (4:48)
Review: Motor City veteran Marcellus Pittman has been in fine form since returning from a four-year hiatus in early 2018. This EP - his third of the year - is, of course, really rather good. Opener "Something Like (A Dream)" is particularly good, offering a perfect balance between the rolling, head-nodding, pitched-down lusciousness of Beatdown and the spacey, delay-laden warmth of more peak-time focused Detroit deep house. If you're looking for something a little less smooth, check the low-slung, off-kilter, cyber-acid rawness of "Jamie 326 Tsot". While rather good, it feels a little out of place next to the fluttering, stripped-back deep house tunefulness of "Breath Beat", whose echoing chords are especially alluring.

Tusk Wax Twenty Six (feat LA-4A remix) (hand-stamped numbered 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TW 26. Rel: 02 Jul 18
  1. Radial Velocity
  2. Digital Silhouette
  3. Radial Velocity (LA-4A remix)
  4. Virtual Light Institute
Review: Pixelife is no stranger to the Tusk Wax family, having appeared on the Horn Wax label some five years ago, alongside intermittent releases on Throne Of Blood and more recently Samo Records. Now Pixelife is back with a gutsy release in the Tusk Wax style that matches warm, analogue power with bombast and drama in abundance, not least on EP opener "Radial Velocity." "Digital Silhouette" is equally epic in its construction, but sports a leaner club focus in between the surges of full-bodied synth swells. LA-4A is in a vicious mood on his remix of "Radial Velocity," uses some snarling low end acid tones to devastating effect, and then "Virtual Light Institute" finishes the EP off with a swooning, emotive cut that capitalises on Pixelife's bright and bold sound.

  1. Pygmalion (9:05)
  2. Tropic (4:49)
  3. Azure (6:22)
  4. When All The World's Asleep (4:54)
Review: Placid One's debut came in 2017, with a sublime EP for Ransom Note, and the artist is back with a new 12" for Spain's Nebulae imprint, a home to some of the wildest new techno on the scene. Much like his previous excursions, Placid One's opener here comes in the form of a break-centric dance juggernaut by the name of "Pygmalion", blurring the lines along the hardcore continuum; "Tropic" pitches down to a slow-releasing house abstraction that remains at a slow tempo. Over on the B-side, "Azure" calms the waters thanks to a deep-minded house gem with all sorts of dreamy sequences, and "When All The World's Asleep" builds on that by entering a totally beatless space, gliding and moving along a cloud of rich ambient drones. Excellent stuff.

Love Is Enough (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: EES 024. Rel: 17 Oct 16
  1. Love Is Enough (Richard Sen remix)
  2. Love Is Enough (Khidja remix)
  3. Love Is Enough (Luke Solomon remix)
  4. Love Is Enough (Jamie Paton remix)
Review: Originally operating in the 80s industrial scene, Plus Instruments have recently found a new lease of life. (Emotional) Especial are just the kind of label to jump on such deviant club fare, and on this package "Love Is Enough" gets a variety of remixes that all embrace the groups seedy ambience. Richard Sen brings a muscular thrust to the track, while Khidja takes a more delicate approach. Luke Solomon meanwhile casts his years of experience in oddball house on his steady grooving version, and then Jamie Paton taps into the industrial vein to finish the package off in fine style.

  2. Love Is Enough (Luke Solomon dub) (7:03)
  3. Love Is Enough (Khidja dubstrumental) (6:27)
  4. Love Is Enough (Alphonse dub) (5:57)
Review: Previously spotted on Emotional [Especial] with the fantastic Love Is Enough 12", Plus Instruments get the remix treatment in a classic '80s style with the Dub Is Enough single. The producers tasked with delivering versions vary wildly, but they make for a strong combination. Jamie Paton's "Cloudy Dub-Out" is masterful, simmering the elements down to a sensual bassline and delicate ripples on top, while Luke Solomon brings his bumpy, off-kilter house style to the table. Khidja has a more dramatic, synth laden approach and Alphonse creates a dusty, funky roller out of that killer bassline groove.

Review: Fresh from the success of two top notch EPs on iile, Leo Pol unveils his most ambitious release to date. All I Got In Me is something of a beast, with seven tracks stretched across two slabs of wax. It's a rather pleasingly varied affair, all told, with the experienced producer flitting between Detroit style techno futurism ("BH2"), warm, chunky and occasionally tough deep house ("All I Got In Me", "Live Concrete"), spacey beatbox electro ("Live Love") and the kind of tech-house cuts that look to both the Motor City and Chicago for inspiration. As a bonus, he's also included a collaborative cut under the St Ouen Connection moniker, the deep and hazy, techno-tempo positivity of "Masile".

  4. Techyes No! (5:46)
Review: Bass Culture Records latest missive comes from Leo Pol, a producer arguably best known for blurring the boundaries between deep house and tech-house. The St Ouen Connexion member is at the top of his game throughout, starting with the pumping jazziness of "Caliente", where fluid electric piano lines and angular electronic pulses gleefully ride a stomping analogue beat. He impressively changes tack via the mind-altering two-step garage roller "FNC Burning", before opening the flipside with the attractive '80s Chicago deep house revivalism of "Dark Outside". To round things off, Leo Pol slams down a weighty slab of atmospheric techno bounciness rich in hissing hi-hats, slamming kickdrums and clandestine melodies ("Techeyes No!").

  1. Politics Of Dancing X Cab Drivers
  2. Politics Of Dancing X Sebo K
Review:
Politics Of Dancing continue to expand their horizons with another round of collaborative wares on their P.O.D Cross sublabel. Once again they've invited big hitters who slip perfectly into the minimal house mindset the Parisian label has been locked in since 2013, leading with Cab Drivers on the A side. The deep-diving German mainstays gel with the POD crew in a tightly clipped but utterly funked up roller, sitting in contrast to the more open, tripped out synth flourishes Sebo K brings to the table on side B. With each track distinctive but also compatible, there's every chance you'll be compelled to play both out at the late night / early morning shuffled-up jamboree.

Review: The Politics of Dancing crew are launching a brand new venture here, instigating some choice collaborative action with their nearest and dearest, jammed out and cut to wax for your listening and spinning pleasure. Of course it figures that they'd start this project close to home, bringing in some of their Parisian brethren for two assured cuts of heads down, straight up house music. Djebali lends a hand on the A side, with a spread of swirling pad tones drifting around the sturdy drums, while Franck Roger brings a more flirtatious sound to the B side with playful diva samples and crafty synth lines played out in his inimitable style.

  4. Be Free (Just Alexander remix) (5:56)
Review: Detroiter Pontchartrain initially earned a reputation for delivering killer re-edits and sample-heavy house cuts that sit somewhere between remixes and original productions. This EP, though, is a little different. While it does contain a few sneaky samples here and there, it's effectively a showcase for his original productions. These are variously breezy, warm and melodious (the starry, soul-fired "Be Free"), and loopy and Balearic (the jangling Mediterranean guitars and layered percussion of "Loose"). Turn to the flip for two remixes of the title track: a rolling, riff-heavy peak-time excursion from Topher Horn and a brilliantly bass-heavy dancefloor Dub from Just Alexander.

  2. Luke's Summer (5:19)
  3. Luke's Summer (Jay Shepheard remix) (6:29)
  4. Rhythm Ride (Coyote remix) (6:28)
Review: The ever strong Tusk Wax empire continues apace with this assured slice of cosmic tinkering from the somewhat mysterious Pork & Tony, supposedly featuring Private Agenda. Who's responsible hardly matters - the jams are what counts, and they're impeccable slices of disco-informed boogie crafted with woozy nights and red lights in mind. "Rhythm Ride" is a seductive trip peppered with (presumably Agenda's) vocals, and "Luke's Summer" gets gently melancholic while thumping out a rugged machine beat. Jay Shepheard comes on board to remix "Luke's Summer" and does so in a measured, patiently paced manner. Coyote's take on "Rhythm Ride" dubs the whole thing out magnificently, pushing the track even further out of the stratosphere thanks to shimmering dub processing and a nagging acid line.

  3. Sheltered Light (8:49)
Review: Somewhat remarkably, A Life Without Notifications not only marks Alan Abrahams' first new material for two years, but also his first release on the admirable Dial label. All three tracks are typically positive and melodious, with the affable South African once more showcasing his love of colourful synthesizers and tactile electronics. Of the three, it's arguably A-side "I Open My Eyes", where mournful pianos, squelchy synth-bass and drifting vocal refrains ride a bongo-laden, up-tempo deep house groove, that makes the biggest impression. That said, the deeper, jazzier drum machine rhythms and toasty Fender Rhodes keys of "Wear Your Life Like a Loose Negligee" are little less than delicious.

Review: Paul Lorraine's London/Barcelona based imprint Rhythm Cult has previously given us releases by Stephen Beaupre, Barem and Deadbeat and now serves us with a new one by the always impressive Alan Abrahams aka Portable with the Lovers & Players EP. "Reeva Numbers" is high tech and glitchy minimal, spanning close to twelve minutes; this track just builds and builds brilliantly and those church organs are an interesting touch. On the flip "Only Human" it's more beautifully haunting and emotive deep house as usual by Abrahams, reminiscent of his now classic "Hold On" and featuring his wonderful vocals. Finally "Moving Trains & You" is the most fierce effort on here; a dusty and rusty vintage house jam that grinds and clatters away furiously like a Hieroglyphic Being cut.

Review: US newbie Gregory Porter was man of the year as far as nu-soul and funk goes and championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson,Patrick Forge & Nik Weston to name but a few. This record had an incredible amount of attention around it even before its release and to be honest, it ain't no surprise! It's just a future classic, end of discussion - it takes Detroit's fine soul and funk heritage onto a new level, showing us that classics are still very much in the making. Porter's own voice is majestic and prophetic as he talks about "Motor City burnin'" and who then goes on to deliver his powerful and emotional words. There's even a slightly "housier" remix by Opolopo, giving us the chance to also enjoy this mighty record at the centre of late-night set...this is certified Theo Parrish material right here!

Review: Irishman Peter Power has become quite a well known figure in Berlin since moving there several years ago and has been one of the figures behind some of the city's now legendary haunts like Kleine Reise (RIP) and the successful Loftus Hall/Bertrams: which has had a great run thus far too. Now the man behind the Ufordia imprint returns with his second outing on Thomas Von Party's Multi Culti, which itself has also made the move to the German capital. Power delves deep into the exotic here, borrowing heavily from African music and getting very atmospheric and esoteric in the process. The life affirming raindance of "Adama Waro" (original mix) is certainly geared for some moments of truth on the dancefloor. Equally spiritual is the traditional percussion based journey of "Mori Baka" (original mix). There's some great remixes by label manager Dreems and Bucharest duo Khidja: the latter's contributions which shine the most, particularly on their balearica infused/Second Summer of Love sounding remix of "Dansakoni".
