Double G (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SUGAR 004. Rel: 11 Sep 17
  1. Double G
  2. Even So
  3. Even So (Maurice Jnr remix)
Review: Having helped launch the Sugarhouse label with his Paradise Forum brethren, Jamie Paul gets a chance to show off his talents on his debut 12", adding to the label's already impressive catalogue with another swathe of classy house jams with a modern twist. "Double G" definitely sports the chops for the peak of the night, but it's also shot through with a welcome weirdness and a fuzzy warmth that should find favour with a wide range of DJs. "Even So" is a more laid back, bumping affair that matches the smooth finish of the A-side, but says something different altogether. Label mate Maurice Jnr meanwhile serves up a remix of Even So that nudges the delicate tones in a techier direction.

Slow Roll EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BKR 013. Rel: 30 Nov 15
  1. Slow Roll (11:20)
  2. Filtechno (8:03)
  3. Aired (7:32)
Review: Well formed, Brighton based, deep house label Black Key Records again comes up trumps with a tasty new EP from Germany's accomplished and well travelled Pawas.

DJ and producer Pawas Gupta has amassed a cultured discography since 2007. Releasing his moody house vibes on labels like Fear of Flying, Night Drive Music and Back Key Limited, he has put out a steady stream of excellent 12"s and LPs and never fails to cook up original sounds.

Absorbing and atmospheric opener 'Slow Roll' is a cavernous chamber of warming sound with soft rubber drums making for a lazy groove. Icy pads and soulful chords drift and flap about above as distant stabs help propel you along this underwater landscape. Building to a subtle peak that makes your whole body move, it is a fine opener that is rich and detailed.

The expertly layered 'Filtechno' is a fathom deep track that is as dubby, flabby and horizontal as you could imagine. Celestial pads circle like spirits in the night and gloopy bass brings a fortress sense of depth to this most serene bit of sonic landscaping. Many floors are sure to be in a state of brain soothing joy when they get lost in this one.

Lastly, Pawas shows another side again with 'Aired,' a more melodic and jazzy number featuring cute little piano motifs, tooting bass and hip swinging, super wet claps. It is perfectly atmospheric and nicely coloured, and rounds out a classy EP of contemporary house sounds from one of the best labels in the business.

Review: Something a little bit different from London deep house/nu-disco specialists Wolf Music here. Portuguese producer Pedro teams up with Washington DC based vocalist Jenna Camille. Featuring influences from jazz though to soul, R'n'B and broken beat: as heard on the sexy late night mood lighting of "Float" which you can imagine hearing in the basement of a smoky jazz club, the super sultry "Keep It H 2000" or the funky beat beneath the smooth groove of "Future Dance" (It'll Be Ok). It might be from Porto by way of the American capital, but this really nails that UK kind of vibe in the vein of Kaidi Tatham, Mark De Clive Lowe or Atjazz.

  1. Openin' Up
  2. M Flight
Review: Pressing issues may have delayed the Pender Street Steppers' debut on Mood Hut Recordings, but this fresh single on PPU should more than plug the gap. Those who may have heard the Mood Hut outfit's Life In The Zone cassette last year will know what to expect: "Openin' Up" combines jittery conga percussion with rubbery bass and a positively uplifting sense of melody that nevertheless errs on the grubbier side of the spectrum, while "M Flight" is even more summery in it outlook, as a humorous '80s-inspired piece of melodic sampling propels its blissful chords and carefree bassline. As with all Mood Hut-affiliated releases, this won't last long...

  3. Ben (5:03)
  4. People (7:06)
Review: According to the unusual press release accompanying Safe Trip's latest release, Ben Penn's second EP for Young Marco's imprint was the result of vivid hallucinations brought on by the ingestion of an experimental drug provided by agents from a "shadowy" secret organization. "Not Very Important EP" is actually pretty darn trippy. Opener "Nix" is a gently psychedelic, delay-laden trip into outer space with just a clutch of synthesizers for company, while "Not Important" layers alien melody lines over polyrhythmic electro drums and rubbery synth-bass. Elsewhere, "Ben" is a trippy chunk of sleepy alien funk smothered in quirky synth samples and madcap electronics, while "People" is as warm, woozy and as loved-up as they come.

  2. The One (feat Emilie Nana - dub) (6:31)
  3. Mercury (7:27)
  4. Blue (6:59)
Review: Germany's Nils Penner is a perfect fit for the Compost Black label, his suave approach to tech-minded deep house instilling yet further credibility into this successful label. He's appeared on here before, along with an appearance on the equally awesome Freerange Records, but "The One" feels like his most musical and accomplished work to date, thanks to the vocal appearance of Emilie Nana in what is a smooth, silky house groover for all sorts of DJs to enjoy. There's a heavier, moodier dub of the title track too, while the flip's "Mercury" goes into more progressive territories, and "Blue" driving an almost jazzy, balearic excursion. Another winner from CBL - recommended!

  1. Lost Dreams
  2. Reverse The Trend
  3. Darkness Stalks
  4. Distances
Review: Cyber Dance Records are back on the attack with a fresh release from the legendary Perseus Traxx aka Nigel Rogers, a 4-track EP entitled after recent scientific developments 'An Apparent Horizon'. It's a firmly machine-based and totally jam-packed affair reflecting diverse sounds from the UK's own rich history of electronic dance music, with elements from the classic Warp "deep space sound" prominent as much as the more usual 303-jacking acid house grooves in the vein of Baby Ford or Bam Bam. 'Lost Dreams' opens the record with a floaty dream-like hypnosis from the depths of space and sets the tone in magnificent style, followed up on Side A with the irresistible roll of 'Reverse The Trend' that takes the groove harder, further and deeperstraight off to the beyond. Dark strings reminiscent of old LFO, B-12 or Autechre vinyls from the early 90s propel us into Side B on 'Darkness Stalks', and then we're transported onto the concluding track on the EP, 'Distances'; an epic closer that opens with beautiful reverbed claps and acid squelches before diving into an inky black void of timeless space-travelling and slow-building tension that could surely echo hauntingly around any M25 rave in the depths of a late 1980s night.

Cat: COTF 006. Rel: 02 Mar 15
  1. Rainy Tuesday
  2. Lotus Protocol
  3. Dr Burisch
  4. Electrical Surge
Review: We are pleased to announce the release of 'Dr Burisch' by Perseus Trax on Crimes of the Future. After releases on Bunker, MOS & Chiwax (to name a few), the EP is a four track soundtrack to some forgotten alien abduction documentary... maybe.
Starting off with 'Rainy Tuesday' and its skipping pitch shift melodies, and followed by 'Lotus Protocol' and its almost Richard D. hook. On the flip we have the title track, slow and building, very much the 'theme' of the piece. The EP finishes with 'Electrical Surge', and its static crackle of radio interference and damaged power lines.

Review: 18 months after Perseus Traxx brought Flight Recorder his first E.P, dedicated to four of the nine Muses of ancient Greece, the label now ushers in the second instalment dedicated to four more Muses, on Goddesses Of Inspiration II. The feel is the same as before with jagged cutting tones jammed live then edited down. Heavy synths and scattered drums perform an ode characterising the appropriate Muses, as tangled wires and a pair of hands wrench the overload of inspiration they give from basic machines. Once again Perseus' release on Flight Recorder is a unique set of acid-free sonic experiments, that sometimes feel as cold and edgy, as they do warm and carefree.

  1. Fears Of Simplicty
  2. Exhilaration Of The New
  3. Half Heard Whispers
  4. In Our Dreams
Review: The latest Love Notes welcomes Perseus Traxx to the fold with just the kind of romantic, classically informed hardware jam action that the label so dearly loves. "Fears Of Simplicity" kicks off on a celestial tip that reaches skyward with its plush layers of electronic melodics, while "Exhilaration Of The New" sports a distinctly Mr. Fingers-flavoured vibe that's impossible to dislike. "Half Heard Whispers" is a lighter jam that floats along on an airy bed of pads, and then "In Our Dreams" takes the prize as the prime cut on the record, digging deep to depict a more mysterious version of the old-skool house music we know and love.

Cat: HW 11. Rel: 18 Sep 17
  1. Perseus Traxx - "Manque"
  2. Posthuman - "A Better Me"
Review: Horn Wax is always a trusted outpost for intriguing, often haunting forays into the world of machine powered house and techno, and so it goes on edition 11 as Perseus Traxx and Posthuman take a side each to extol the virtues of electronic exploration. Perseus Traxx is in an especially romantic mood with the blown out tones of "Manque" straining through a fog of reverb and dust, creating a truly mesmerizing jacker in the process. Posthuman by way of contrast keeps things clear and concise, preferring a sinsister, sleazy approach to acid that rides a slower tempo and sounds all the more alluring for it.

Review: Having previously impressed with a trickle of fine EPs for L.I.E.S and Exotic Dance Records, man of mystery Person of Interest pops up on the ever-reliable Clone Royal Oak. Lead cut "NOYFB" is an intriguing proposition, fusing as it does the rhythmic swing of UK garage, the spacey futurism of classic Detroit techno, and the loved-up ethos of early US deep house. The latter two influences shine through on the alternative "Straight To Tape" version, while "Pareidolia" mixes jaunty analogue electronics with the low-end throb more readily associated with British-made house and techno. A fine EP comes to a close with "Carmen", a particularly woozy, cymbal-heavy late night excursion.

Review: SVN and Philip Gelberg's tracks under the PG Sounds moniker have been among our very favourites out of the ever-impressive SUED catalogue. The imprint, led by Sven (SVN) Reiger himself, has never veered away from their core sound and aesthetics; an analogue approach enwraps a particularly glitchy, improvisational, dubwise sound that has a particular tendency of sounding different upon each new listen. Their latest collaboration in the studio marks the imprint's 20th release to date, with "Track 1" showcasing their itchy sound across an endlessly pleasing acid palette. On the flip, we have a muted continuation of the previous 303 sounds with "Track 2", swamped and dubbed-out for maximum impact, followed by the more ethereal, more tropical mannerisms of "Track 3" - a SUED classic! Recommended.

  1. Ahumbo (5:55)
  2. Island Time (4:39)
  3. If It Ever Feels Right (9:11)
Review: The Lovefingers helmed ESP Institute had a frankly killer year in 2012, and if this opening salvo for 2013 is anything to go by we're in for many more treats from the label this year. Pharoahs have already graced 100% Silk with their brand of disco-inspired synth jams, but these three tracks are infinitely more accomplished. "Ahumbo" combines subtle Afrobeat influences with thick, lustrous bass and the kind of spacious guitar licks that would make Talking Heads jealous, while the dubby feel and atonal percussion of "Island Time" recall Ital's brilliant track "Queens". Finally, the "If It Ever Feels Right" goes in as hard as you could imagine an ESP release going, with thick analogue bass tumbling out of control at 132bpm driven relentlessly forward by a conga-led rhythm, which segues effortlessly into a blissful saxophone breakdown. Unsurprisingly, this is excellent stuff which comes highly recommended.

Review: Canadian minimal standard-bearer Pheek is the fifth artist to sign up for The Untold Stories Protagonist series, and he's packing some of the crispest grooves he's laid down in some time. "Lonely Wolf" is everything a minimal house track should be, with a crackling, shuffling beat and layers of subtle orchestration building into a soul-stirring groover. "Father" however takes a more abstract route into off-kilter percussion and exotic found sounds specifically arranged to tickle the mind. That leaves it to "The Logical Question To Come Is Yet To Be Defined" to dominate the B-side in a 16-minute trip that moves through all manner of moods and moments.

  4. Amalfi (4:13)
Review: Phlowgod's "Summer" was arguably the standout cut on Salt Mines' brilliant launch 12", so it's good to see him return to the Aussie imprint following a fine debut EP for Echovolt. He begins with two contrasting versions of "Dubplate". The first is fuzzy, wonky and out-there, smothering heavy bass, post-dubstep rhythms and drowsy chords in layers of dust and grime. While the second is similarly lo-fi in feel, it sees Phlowgood return to his usual deep house drums. Flipside "O" feels like the kind of off-kilter techno crustiness you'd hear on Lobster Theremin, while closer "Amalfi" is a hazy chunk of slo-mo deepness for those fragile, post-club moments.

Review: Carsten Aermes, aka Phon O, made a name for himself via the 50 Weapons label in more recent years, and it's now time for him deliver the goods for Ellen Allien's BPitch Control, one of Berlin's finest house and techno stables. "Run" is more energetic and upbeat compared to a lot of other BPitch releases, bringing through a soaring melodic groove and a high-powered techno rattle into the mix, whereas "Booklyn Shuffle" is a futuristic sort of jungle abstraction featuring a 4/4 beat down in its underbelly. The title track "Fractions" goes for a more house-centric approach, but Phon O still manages to retain his distinctiveness thanks to a jam-packed groove full of bass exploration and subtle jungle infusions.

Review: American producer and DJ in Berlin Daniel Fisher has appeared everywhere from Hippos In Tanks to Liberation Technologies and even 1080p, to name but a few. His new one appears courtesy of Brooklyn based lo-fi imprint Exotic Dance, which had a stellar year in 2016 with great releases from the likes of DJ Osom aka label boss J. Albert and Person Of Interest of LIES and Future Times fame. There's some rather Arthur Russell sounding looped-up disco business on "Down Down" with its rubbery and hypnotic bassline action. Some tough rolling yet funky techno on "Group Think" which could work well on the dancefloor at Berghain - a club he plays at somewhat regularly. On the flip, he throws down some new wave junglist flavour on the rather fierce "Lunch Break" which lunges straight for the jugular. Fisher had a somewhat steady year in 2017, but still found time for remixes on the likes for Penelope and Groove Selecta.

Review: Daniel Fisher's Physical Therapy moniker has been a guest on some pretty strong labels, including 1080p, Hippos In Tanks, Allergy Season and a whole lot more. He first linked up with DJ Haus via the Unknown To The Unknown label back in 2015, and now he slips over to the sister label House Crime for a sweaty grip of club belters for those who like it ruff. "Vaseline Break" has a choice line in rolling amens and bleepy synths, while "Grater" takes on a straight-ahead techno march. "The Pressure" is a strange, disembodied belter with airy synths and a spacious mix, and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely" brings a little early 90s sass to the table, rounding off a wonderfully old-skool flavoured EP.
