  1. Awanto - "Sit On This"
  2. S3A aka Sampling As An Art - "The Ravist"
  3. Jared Wilson - "You Get Down"
  4. Samuel Andre Madsen - "Waterwalking Paris"
Review: Concrete has been integral in the rebirth of Parisian clubbing culture, offering a unique 19 hour long party that begins early on Sunday and goes on and on in the picturesque setting of the Port De La Rapee on the River Seine. Looking to expand, this new Concrete Music label should operate as an extension of the party commencing with a series of three planned Textures releases inviting local talent and previous guests to contribute. Volume 1 inaugurates the label in style, brandishing original productions from the excellent Jared Wilson, Awanto 3 and Nsyde artist Samuel Andre Madsen as well as Parisian producer S3A (Sampling As An Art). "Sit On This" is a typically dusty slice of house from Awanto 3 which contrasts nicely with the percussion heavy classicist house of "The Ravist" by S3A and the deep acid of Jared Wilson. Madsen takes it deep and moody on "Waterwalking Paris" to end a superb and diverse debut release.

  1. In The (6:03)
  2. The Scroll (6:15)
  3. Veger (8:52)
Review: While Amon "Aybee" Bazile rarely puts a foot wrong, there was arguably a time when his releases were a little too frequent to register with buyers. Thankfully, he's simmered down in recent years, seemingly content to just release the cream of his studio productions. Certainly, Nexus shows the producer at the top of his game. Check the deep and spacey hypnotism of "The Scroll", where dreamy chord progressions seemingly float around an analogue rich deep house groove, and the broken techno headiness of "Veger". Both bubble along at a house tempo, but draw huge influence from Motor City futurism. Perhaps best of all, though, is opener "In The", a rolling, bongo-laden saunter into life-affirming outer-space deep house blessed with a rich and warming bassline.

Passage EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DBRV 031. Rel: 27 Nov 17
  1. Passage (Full Experience)
  2. Passage (Astral Stroll)
Review: Lars Bartkuhn has taken his rich jazz chops to many esteemed places over the years, from Sonar Kollektiv to Neroli, Needs Music to Ropeadope, and his expressive musical style merges perfectly with Aybee's cosmic electronic tendencies on this new Deepblak joint. "Passage (Full Experience)" is a broken beat wonder to behold, all swooning and swirling melodics and freewheeling rhythms. "Passage (Astral Stroll)" takes things deeper, letting the Rhodes lead the way amidst a pattering array of earthy percussion for a truly transcendental trip out. Deepblak's jazz instincts have never sounded so full of vitality as they do on this interstellar single.

  1. Ween Been (6:04)
  2. Absent (5:19)
  3. The Friend (6:02)
  4. Two (For You) (7:17)
Review: This year marks 10 years since Bastian Volker first donned the Baaz alias. He remains one of deep house's most reliable producers, as this outing on longtime home Office Recordings deftly proves. He begins with the ocean-deep chords, softly spoken electronics and hypnotic groove of "Ween Been", before wrapping heart-aching pianos and drowsy chords around a barely audible drum track on the near-ambient bliss of "Absent". On the flipside you'll find the tech-tinged shuffle of "The Friend", where bolder kicks and snares rise above his liquid dreamscape, and the brilliant ambient electronica of sublime closer "Two (For You)". This is music for sunsets, sunrises and particularly sleepy afternoons.

The Reason (12")
Cat: SOL 9. Rel: 02 Oct 17
  1. The Reason (7:05)
  2. Ancestors Fun (7:03)
Review: There's deep, and then there's the work of Bastian "Baaz" Volker. The German producer's work is rarely less than ultra-deep, and this return to Slices of Life - a label he last blessed four years ago - is predictably hazy and hypnotic. Title track "The Reason" is typical of his style, with becalmed, head-in-the-clouds chords and chopped-up vocal samples reclining over a crispy tech-house groove. Flipside "Ancestors Groove" is a little livelier, both rhythmically and structurally, with chiming blasts of melody and suitably soulful vocal samples riding a backing track rich in bustling bass, bumping beats and drowsy pads.

  1. Kraut House (6:53)

  3. Modual (6:20)
  4. Simple E (5:51)
Review: Swiss master of all things deep, Bastian Volker is back for the eighth release on his always impressive Office imprint. Not just content with creating some lush music under the Baaz alias or redefining the dub techno sound as Eric Miller (like on his recent album Silhouettes for Sushitech this year), could he be delving into the world of hypnotic techno now also? Brilliant opener "Kraut House" starts the EP off in great form and is reminiscent of the tribal trance sounds of Refracted or Tozzy. On the flip, "Modual" is more like the Baaz we know; deep, dubby and emotive with a bumping baseline, smoky drum patterns and pitch shifted druggy vocals for added effect. Finally "Simple E" adds yet more variety to the release with this dusty and bittersweet slow burner that's perfect for drifting.

Review: Certified Chicago house authenticity: Mojuba revive Badie's 1995 EP "Bernard Badie Volume IV" just in time for summer. Still shining with pure positivity, each cut slaps with jacking soul from the lolloping fretless bass and jaunty pianos of "Groove In You" to the dreamy stutters, bends and glitches of "Que" by way of the staccato bass and punctuated keys of "Stand Alone" and looped vocal hypnosis of "Stressed Out". 22 years deep and still sparkling.

Review: Kurt Baggaley you ask? You may have known him back in the early 2000s as Scape One: the legendary UK electro producer. He appears in this instance on Nick Anthony Simoncino's HotMix imprint and it's fitting really. Under his own name he makes emotive deep house in the vein of Larry Heard (such as on the melancholic opening track "Almost Untouched") or the high-tech soul style of Detroit as heard on "Emotion Chip". On the flip we have two dreamy and restrained trips on the more minimal tip like the atmospheric slow burner "Close Company" or the rich and lush synth tapestries explored on "Family Resemblance". Tip!

  5. Advice (4:22)
Review: While floors still burn from "Mapping" on Cin Cin earlier this year, "I Can Still See You" sees Gacha return to his more ambient, introspective and eclectic pastures on this extensive show-stopping, sense-blurring five track EP. "River" glistens with gentle ebbs and flows, "Saysea" insists with a lush jazzy break while "Reflection" trembles with just the right tech tendencies without getting too heavy for itself. Elsewhere "Through The Glass" is a straight cinematic trip back to the world he forecast in Two Sunsets while "Advice" closes with a moment of broken beat poetry. As long as Gacha Bakradze can see us, we can hear him. This has to be a good thing.

  1. Adventures In Lagos
  2. Three Strikes & Out
  3. Disorganics
  4. Silver Lining (Horace Silver RIP)
Review: "The second release for Danny Ward's (dubble d/moodymanc) Well Cut Records features an ep from "Balaphonic". A project which fuses organic live instrumentation and musicianship with deep and modal dancefloor sensibilities.
"Adventures in Lagos" is a long evolving and deep building hypnotic afro groove featuring spoken word samples of Fela Kuti and street sounds taken from 1970s Lagos.
"Three Strikes and Out" is a lush sounding deep, 119 bpm organic groove which builds into a percussion workout and has been championed of late to great effect in the sets of Osunlade.
Opening side 2, "Disorganics" is a nod toward the great Brazillian recordings of the 1960s and seventies yet keeps the tempo firmly locked for the dancefloor. Live samba percussion opens into themes built on 10 string guitar parts and a driving double bass line which build to a melodic drop based on a theme played on plucked cello! Definitely one for the heads!.
Closing the e.p. is "Silver Lining", in tribute to the late great jazz musician and musical visionary Horace Silver. Dark, ride driven, earthy house drums propel a modal grand piano and double bass riff to build the tension which evolves with an ever expanding analogue synth line, keeping energy high whilst percussion and string parts develop to augment the dynamics!

Cat: MB 03. Rel: 16 Oct 17
  1. Drop It Down Low
  2. Drop It Down Dub
  3. Remember (Vibes mix)
  4. Remember
Review: After launching into Memory Box with aplomb on the deadly Acid Stomp 12", Robin Ball steps up on the London-based imprint once again with the saucy tones of his latest four track EP. "Drop It Down Low" and its accompanying dub mix are classy twists on the tech house formula that lean towards old-skool methods while keeping the sleaze factor ramped up high. "Remember" takes a more tripped out tribal approach, with the "Vibes mix" providing a more subtle twist to the warm, melodic undulations of the full fat version. It's an EP loaded with personality and flair for sophisticated dancefloors.

Short Term Goals (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TTR 004. Rel: 24 Jul 17
  1. Up 2 You
  2. Twist Of Fate
  3. Feds Watching
  4. Dis Aura
Review: Baltra has been plying his trade for a few years now, dealing in a distinctly retro brand of house music that could easily pass for a forgotten Chicago cut were it not for subtle touches of advanced production tucked away in the mix. On this single for Tape Throb, the warbling synth tones of "Up 2 You" sound like a perfect fit for the label, while "Twist Of Fate" smooths things out a more melancholic mood atop a classic jack beat. "Feds Watching" strains under a cloud of grit that adds to the backwards glancing vibe of the record, while "Dis Aura" opts for a marginally more modern approach spelt out by the plush polysynth tones that pulse throughout.

  3. Guam (3:44)
  4. Guam (Deep 88 remix) (6:15)
Review: IIB next release comes from French duo Baptiste & Pierre. 2 tracks of warm tropical goodness. Virage is a deep mellow afro tinged tropical workout. Muted guitar hook and nature sounds conjuring up far flung deserted beaches. Ruf dug beefs it up a touch and moves it indoors giving it a more afterhours feel. The second track has the same evocative feel as Virage with added atmospheric pads and a bouncy melody. Like a closing track on an 80's road movie. Full of emotion. Italian maestro Deep 88 creates a truly authentic slice of early ninetoes deep dreamy house. Perfectly wrapping the original in warm analogue drums. Another quality release from IIB.

  4. The Bog (6:57)
Review: The Supply crew's John Barera and Will Martin team up again but this time it's for Steve Mizek's Argot imprint, and the duo have duly supplied their familiarly dusty brand of house music. The title track "1 2 3 (Feels Right)" is sparse, raw as hell and synth-heavy, while "Hide Tide" is a little ore low-key and loose around the edges. Over on the B-side, "Spin Cycle" unleashes a bubbling low-end underneath a grainy, swinging kick-snare approach, whereas "The Bog" winds the tempo right down resulting in a wonderfully abstract vision of house and techno.

  3. Le Louche - "Crosswind" (7:18)
  4. Barletta - "Optix" (7:22)
Review: French label Daydream is focused on forceful, groovy house music exclusively on wax. Moreover, the imprint ambitiously seeks to offer an intelligent and efficient vision of house music and provide perfect DJ cuts. If this EP is any indication: they're pretty onto it! This is deep and dubby late night house in the vein of Office, Oscillat or The Mountain People. The latter is certainly what A side cut "Sylex" by Barletta had us thinking about: now that's a compliment! Sultry and hypnotic afterhours style biz with a heap of swing to boot. On the flip, fellow debutante Le Louche similarly impresses with something more uplifting in the form of "Crosswind". Its skippy and immaculately programmed rhythms assisted by ethereal chords and dubby/delayed drenched aesthetics. Finally, we were pleased to get another serving by Luca Barletta: his sense of swing on the stripped back, late night sexiness of "Optix" is perfect mood lighting for those intimate Berlin style loft parties.

  4. Recycling (Hodini remix) (4:44)
Review: Georgi Barrel is only on his fifth release so far, but the young house craftsman is growing with every new EP, and his inimitable swing is infectious to say the least! This time he's up on Barcelona's Petra Digital, spear-headed by the tone-heavy "Rhyme Goes On", a dusty slice of house magic with a deep, funky bass and a badass set of percussion; Kerem Akdag's remix adds a touch of sparkle to the melodies, and a little hypnotic charm to the groove. On the B-side, "Recycling" gets down and dirty with the jazz samples, unleashing a sensational swarm of freeform horns and stunning Rhodes keys, leaving Hodini's remix to provide some broken beat antics...what a blast!

  1. Elysium (Full Experience) (13:21)
  2. Elysium (Inner Experience) (4:09)
  3. Elysium (Paradise dub) (7:42)
Review: With a name like "Elysium", you'd expect this EP from experienced producer Lars Bartkuhn to be blissfully melodious, unashamedly positive and musically expansive. It is, of course, with the original version of the title track expertly joining the dots between humid deep house, head-in-the-clouds jazz and the sun-soaked waviness of the Italian dream house movement. Bartkuhn makes great use of live instrumentation - horns, woodwind instruments and pianos, in particular - which are smothered in tropical field recordings and work in unison with a jaunty house groove. On the flipside you'll find two alternative takes: the effortlessly saucer-eyed, slowly building "Inner Experience" version, and the looser, more live sounding Paradise Dub, where the producer trades saxophone and synthesizer solos. Both are, naturally, superb.

  2. Movimento (Inconscio mix)
Review: Battista, John Swing and EMG's first hook-up under the SPS moniker - the thrillingly hard-to-pigeonhole Sintomi Di Gravita 12" - was arguably one of 2014's most slept-on records. Here they join forces for round two, delivering another two tracks that neatly sidestep the accepted norms of house and techno. A-side "Movimento (Consico Mix)" is a wonky chunk of well-swung, jazz-flecked deep house, smothered in filters and tipsy chords. Flip for the Inconsico Mix of the same track, a brilliantly far-out fusion of odd electronics, glitchy rhythms, shimmering synths and bubbling found sounds. It's hardly dancefloor-centric, but it's certainly really, really good.
