Review: Father & Son Records And Tapes have already had a strong 2016 with releases from Naphta, DJ Sajko and Das Komplex, and now the Polish label rounds off the year with a stunning album of style-spanning wares from Niemoc. Paramaribo is the first physical release for the emergent artist, and it sports all manner of instrumentation feeding into a wholesome, heartwarming whole. There's a danceable pulse propelling these tracks, and the likes of "Lustro" head more overtly into club territory, but by and large this is an album of plaintive melodics to tug at the heart as much as the feet.

Quando Party Dove Vai? EP (140 gram grey marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: HT 014. Rel: 16 Feb 15
  1. Resta Pure Dove Sei (feat Modus)
  2. La Ronde Suite (But Not For Me)
  3. Fast Cars
Review: This february Nightdrivers deliver three first-rate cuts on Holic Trax for the 'Quando Party Dove Vai ?' EP. Following on from Burnski's 'The Hours' EP which saw love from names like Mr G, Catz 'N' Dogz, Detroit Swindle and Eats Everything, Holic Trax returns this February with Nightdrivers' 'Quando Party Dove Vai ?'. Since delivering their debut release on Bosconi Records back in 2013 the Berlin-based duo Nightdrivers have been going from strength to strength stacking up further releases on Claap, their own Nightdrivers label and now Holic Trax. To get things underway the light pads of 'Resta Pure Dove Sei' give the opening track a floaty quality while the weighty percussion and subtle rhythms build proceedings into a steady and infectious groove. Nightdrivers appear to go up a gear as the EP progresses with the rippling drums and dynamic arrangements of 'La Ronde Suite (But Not For Me)' while 'Fast Cars' maintains the lively vibe of its predecessor and frenetically bubbles along over busy modulations, wacky intonations and infectious licks to dish up a suitably punchy close to this bouncy EP.

A Funny Thang EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HT 022. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. A Funny Thang (6:49)
  2. Stressedout (6:46)
  3. Rising (vinyl only) (7:07)
  4. Funny Dub Ya Know (6:15)
Review: Italian duo Rufus and Mass_prod are back once again as Nightdrivers, shoring up to Holic Trax with more of their infectious club-ready material. Beyond the functionality of their drums, where the Nightdrivers excel is in their choice of samples and textures to add a psychoactive twist to their craft. "A Funny Thang" is a delightfully unhinged workout, while "Stressedout" does a fine job of digging into a heads down, RnB inflected groove. "Rising" switches things up with a broken beat groove that loads up sunkissed soul samples to great effect, and then the record rounds out with a dub mix of "A Funny Thang".

Review: Nino delivers his first well-deserved solo EP on Batti Batti. Originally from Bosnia, but based in Brussels (Belgium), Nino's tracks have always been a perfect representation of a purely deep underground sound. Starting off with a soothing piece of ambience to set the mood , Odysseia EP is aimed for club use and hence depicts Nino's evolving style yet maintaining his secretive and atmospheric element as a common factor.

  2. Train Of Vicissitudes (8:14)
  3. Reminiscence (5:20)
Review: With The P Connection, former Kimochi and Pads contributor Niro Perrone makes his debut for Soul People Music's Boards series. Aside "Upward Leap" is something of a throbbing, peak-time jacker, with Perrone focusing the action around a mind-altering analogue bassline and handclap-heavy drum machine percussion. There are occasional TB-303 acid lines, too, plus the kind of hazy, chord-heavy breakdown that was once the hallmark of late '80s Italian dream house productions. On the flip, you'll find the tactile grooves, bouncy electronics and swirling pads of "Train Of Vicissitudes", plus the intelligent techno influenced, intergalactic warmth of "Reminiscence".

Zeebeats EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HTV 002 . Rel: 25 Sep 17
  1. Injection Of Love
  2. Zeebeats
  3. Celebrating The Sun
Review: Coming straight out of Novi Sad with decades of experience behind them, Noise Destruction are the kind of refined and experienced house heads you want at the controls. It's been eight years since they were last on wax, but it doesn't show as the rich and effervescent "Injection Of Love" kicks in with its fulsome synth lines. "Zeebeats" is a sharper-edged jam with some excellent textural motifs darting in and around the chunky beat. "Celebrating The Sun" cools things down on the B2 with a wonderfully meditative dub excursion strapped to a deep reaching house beat. Records don't come much classier than this excellent transmission.

  3. Azizi's Dance (7:52)
  4. Kaia (Man Power Bottle Poppin 89 remix) (8:33)
Review: Nancy Noise has been a key player on the forefront of the Balearic scene since as long ago as the late 1980s (making appearances on various early Orb remixes and side projects), and the DJ/producer has enjoyed a new lease of life in recent years. Remarkably, "Kaia" is her debut solo single. The original version is the epitome of Jose Padilla style Balearica; a gorgeous fusion of Rotary Connection style instrumentation, flamenco guitars and eyes-wide-shut electric piano solos. It's accompanied by the grinning, dream house era dancefloor cheeriness of "Azizi's Dance" and two alternate versions of the title track. Man Power's quirky, electro-driven remake works well alongside Leo Mas and Fabrice's stunning house remix echoing shades of Joe Clausell and the golden era of Italian House music.

Review: The contemporary minimal and electro scene has rightly celebrated Norken project for some of the most gorgeous deep cover cuts of the 90s and early 00s, and now he's revived the project via reissues and previously unreleased material from the archives. The vibe across the EP is delicate and playful, with "Motor Breeze" in particular standing out with its meandering pitch bent lead lines. "P.Fox" is sure to be one of the most popular tracks on the EP for the selectors out there thanks to its killer subby bassline and seductive keys, but truly the whole EP is a treasure trove of thoughtful, warm and mysterious electronic goodness.

  3. Sensory Balance
Review: 'White of the Eye' is the first release under "Nothing but Blood" from Scott Fraser, a direct link back to Scott's earlier 90's work and sound around the darker realms of techno and harder-edged Chicago house. The EP title refers back to a favourite Donald Cammell film of Scott's from 88'. 'White of the Eye' on the A-side is an 11 minute extended mix of the lead cut. Silent Servant on remix duties delivers an amyl fuelled techno bomb landing somewhere in an 80's new york basement. Diving deeper on B2 it features Atlanta resident Claire Elise Tippins on vocals.

Review: Carsten Jost, Lawrence and Bianca Heuser's Dial Records imprint recently celebrated 15 years in business with the CD-only All compilation of previously unreleased fare. Here, some of those tracks come to vinyl for the first time. Stefan Tcherepnin kicks things off with the delicate, Japanese-influenced downtempo pop of "I Want To Be Art", before DJ Richard reaches for the Detroit techno cymbals and jazzy chords of the wonderfully wonky "Zero". Flip for the atmospheric, beatless electronics of Christian Naujoks, the deep techno lusciousness of Pantha Du Prince's "Timeout On The Rocks", and the shimmering, spacey ambience of Queens' impeccable "Earth Angel".

  2. Descendants (Djebali remix) (8:03)
Review: Dynamic Romanian duo NTFO are back on Parisian hero Djebali's eponymous imprint. The boys from Timisoara serve up some sleek tech house once again on their new track "Descendants". Here's something a bit deeper and bouncier from their pair, that's comparable to work by the legendary Cab Drivers with its raw, analogue and swinging type of groove. On the flip, we've got none other than Djebali himself delivering a terrific remix that injects the track with more hypnotic peak-time energy and funk - yet still respects the vibe of the original version. Following up a run of great releases on labels like Bondage, 20:20 Vision and their own Sintope label - NTFO continue on their winning streak.

  3. Nu World (Flute mix) (6:11)
  4. Exotica Dance Club (5:28)
  5. Outro (2:52)
Review: The Tartelet label has been riding high on the Danish house front since the end of the noughties, showcasing talents such as the excellent Brandt Brauer Frick, Andrea Fiorito, Wareika and now Nu Guinea. The artist has previously appeared on Italy's Early Sounds Collective and impressed us straight away thanks to a tribal-filtered house sound that is lacking from the current state of affairs. World features five loose and organic jams, one of which - "Bougainvilles" - is a gorgeous slice of live pseudo house improvisation. Both the vocal and flute mixes of "Nu World" are fine house tools with an exotic edge, and the same goes for "Exotica Dance Club", while the "Outro" is three minutes of sparse, delayed drones and electronic abstraction. Lovely.

  4. The Nervous Track (UN mix) (6:29)
Review: Considering this track originally surfaced back in 1993, it's staggering how up to the minute it still sounds, not to mention setting the tone for the swathes of downtempo and broken beat that would flood out from the 90s and beyond into the 21st century. You simply can't measure the influence of "The Nervous Track" with its horn blasts and limber drum roll, and it proves that MAW were never just about tough New York house bump. Take your pick from any of the mixes, they're all classics in their own individual ways, and they'll set any listener adrift on a summery haze of soulful tones and magical drum patterns.

  3. Galaxxy Haze
Review: Nyra's Canoe label continues to provide a vessel for the Irish producer to explore his sound without anything getting in the way. The 12" kicks off with "Sounds Of The Spectrum" coming on like a classic 90s house jam from the Detroit school, classic samples and stabs in tow. "Resist Dance" is a deeper, moodier affair but the old-school romanticism is still there in abundance. Then "Galaxxy Haze" rounds the EP off with a pumped up techno cut that still places dusty machine soul at the forefront of the mix, and full credit to Nyra, he makes it sound utterly legit in the process.

  1. Steve O'Sullivan - "24 Bars Per Day" (6:29)
  2. Cesar Merveille - "Friends" (7:54)
Review: French veteran David K serves up some fantastic remixes on Tone Series, which he's run with Edouard Morin since 2016. It brings together the idea of interdependence between music and design: what colour follows on from music and, in return, which musicality comes out of a colour. This edition comes with some remixes by some right legends of the scene. Mosaic boss Steve O'Sullivan serves up quite a surpsie on his funky, sexy, swing-fuelled rendtion that'd make even Varhat or Mulen step up their game. On the flip, fellow Frenchman Cesar Merveille (Roche Madame) serves up a sweet take on "Friends" which is a bumped-up and glitched out minimal/tech-house version that's perfect for the afterhours.

  1. Steve O'Sullivan - "Over And Over"
  2. Fernando Costantini - "Who We Are"
  3. Mike Shannon - "Talking About"
  4. Clovis - "The River"
Review: From the label: When trends in music can come and go in the blink of an eye, ten years is a long time to stay relevant, passionate and real on the frontline. From its roots in the Parisian club scene by way of its spiritual home at Fuse in Brussels and so on to the globe-trotting, multi-faceted entity that it is today, Lessizmore is living proof of how to do a decade right. The fundamental heartbeat of this European house and techno institution is the maverick music that its affiliated artists make. Of course what the label sounds like now is not necessarily what the label sounded like back in 2006, but it's telling that some of the original characters are still with the label to this day, while many are long time members of the LIZM family that have joined the ranks over the years. In piecing together this compilation, the idea from label founders Jessica Bossuyt and Pierre Noisiez was simply to represent where their brainchild is at right now, from guests at their events in the early days to more recent collaborators of all kinds. The final EP fires up with UK techno legend Steve O'Sullivan serving a lesson in the reduced, hypnotic techno he has made his own since the 90s, measuring the ebb and flow of his production perfectly. Fernando Costantini follows in this mentality with a minimal house burner that keeps the tension simmering throughout. Canadian champion Mike Shannon warms up the B-side with a cut of snaking, experimental techno aimed squarely at the mind, drawing on expressive synth flourishes to create an engrossing, meditative atmosphere. Clovis then delivers the perfect finisher, plying all manner of organic samples into a soul-stirring blend that weighs heavy with emotion while moving with a lightness of touch.

Thirteen/Two/Eight, released on FXHE, has a handclapping, twitching beat with a quirky lively synth melody, classic italo disco and early 80 boogie sounds from a Detroit point of view. A vivid techno track and a darker ambient outing keep the quality high.

Oh Jabba (12")
Cat: FXHE IGNIT. Rel: 11 Dec 12
  1. Oh Jabba
  2. Space Age Steppin
Review: FXHE remain in outer orbit following that stellar Triangulum Australe 12" from Omar S, presenting their final transmission of a superb year in the shape of Oh Jabba, two tracks of stargazing house music from O B Ignitt. Last seen collaborating with Omar S on the dedication to Eddie Murphy's finest acting role, the impression that Ignitt likes his cinema is only strengthened here on the Star Wars referencing lead track with some deliciously lo fi art work of that slug like character on the inner label dispelling any possible doubt. The track itself is a wonderfully simple yet melodic house track, crunchy drum machine rhythms rippling away feverishly beneath a calming array of swooping Rhodes and Moog flourishes. Complementing this, "Space Age Stepping" is a more searching affair, relying more on the rugged drums and gurgling analogue bassline to achieve lift off.

  3. Chocolate City
Review: FXHE return with the master of the mysterious OB Ignitt! Arriving roughly a year on from the last slab of Ignitt goodness, Mysterious finds OB on imperious form, once more showing off his penchant for excellent track titles and singular slant on bumping Detroit business. The title track is a veritable epic of unquantifiable emotive stakes, emerging from a heat treated fog and easing into a subtle yet beguiling rhythmic framework which coaxes you into a spell that grows stronger as the track charges electrically forth. Face down, "Celestial Salacious" has that same rough edged bass line growl to it, but the skipping percussion and building layers of instrumentation give the track real energy, whilst you can almost feel the funk dripping off final track "Chocolate City" which sounds like DJ Nature hocked up on MDMA.

Review: Besides a cheeky cameo with DJ Overdose on Berceuse Heroique last year, pretty much all of Omar Harper's work in recent years has landed on his own Obonit imprint. Now on release nine, it's an immaculate body of work... This included. Painting from a very Detroit palette, Omar fluffs us up nicely with the unhurried soft-focus house groove "Juiced Up" before "Weekends" opens up into more soulful pastures with a narrative style feel where the pianos tell a tale of understated triumph. Finally "Hello Day" jacks and pops with skippy kicks and synths so wet you'll need a towel. Mind the gap.

The big man is back with the excellent groove of "It's Time For Us", a classic, smoked-out house cut with the perfect blend of soulful samples, and 80's-leaning synth jamming. Over on the B-side, kingpin Omar S - a close associate of OB these days - remixes "Synth Spackle" with his inimitable touch, slamming down a dusty cascade of drums and an instantly hummable bassline. Sick, tipped, and hotly recommended. Have no doubts.

  2. Let It Do What It Does (Omar S mix)
Review: Having recently struck out on his own, Ob Ignitt joins forces with Detroit pal Omar-S for the first time since 2012's seminal Wayne County Hill Cops Part 2 12". On the A-side, Ob offers Omar-S "My Last Reese Cup". There's little peanut butter goodness to be found, but rather a chunky, snare-heavy breakbeat house groove, spacey atmospherics and a seriously chunky bassline. On the flip, Omar-S gives his interpretation of "Let It Do What It Takes", with sweet, darting electronics and deep house textures complimenting a typically Motor City flavoured house groove. Impressively, it also boasts a surging sub bass line that sounds particularly booming on club soundsystems.
