  2. Detroit Swindle - "The Break Up" (Max Graef remix)
  3. Nachtbraker - "Bluebottle" (Frits Wentink remix)
  4. Max Graef & Andy Hart - "Jungle" (Nachtbraker remix)
  5. Frits Wentink - "Schrewd" (The Organ Grinder remix)
Review: This deluxe 12" and 10" package is the first in what Detroit Swindle promise will be an annual occurrence - a "family remix EP", where members of the Heist Recordings roster rework label releases from the previous 12 months. It's a neat idea, and one that's undoubtedly resulted in some killer material. The Organ Grinder's surging, heavily percussive rework of Frits Wentik's "Schrewd" is particularly heavy, though it is Max Graef's loose, soulful, groovy and sample-heavy reinterpretation of Detroit Swindle's "The Break Up" is probably the standout. That said, there's plenty to cheer elsewhere, not least Nachtbraker's cowbell-laden, acid house-meets-nu-disco version of Max Graef and Andy Hart's "Jungle".

  3. Soft Metal - "Mystic Trip To Al-Dzazir" (9:36)
  4. Mount Kismet - "Prunes & Dunes" (5:29)
Review: Disco Halal is, apparently, a big fan of "perfect strangers", described in the spiel accompanying this compilation style EP as "those people you will have a short encounter with that may change your life". Some may find the music on the label's Perfect Strangers EP life changing - check, for example, the chugging, early morning disco psychedelia of The Organism's "Reflection", which sounds like it could be capable of inspiring involuntary hallucinations, or the drifting Arabic flutes, delay-laden Middle Eastern vocals and rolling hand percussion of Kincaid's superb "Tyrant". Both are intoxicating in the best possible way. Elsewhere, the woozy nu-disco/deep-house/Arabic Italo-disco fusion of Mount Kismet's exotic closer "Prunes and Dunes" is also hugely enjoyable.

  4. Anyway (feat Yemi) (4:23)
Review: Osage is the alter ego of veteran Philadelphia dj/producer lil'dave. A member of the highly respected Illvibe Collective and the co-host of the internationally known broadcast Eavesdrop Radio, he has released music under various aliases for record labels. BBE Records, Tru Thoughts, Record Breakin' Music and First Word Records to name but a few. His sound incorporates deep house, African rhythms, UK garage, broken beat and much more. Over the years, he has been building a solid reputation, with his tracks supported by notable tastemakers such Gilles Peterson. This 12" compiles four favourite moments from the two EPs that Osage has released thus far on the Brooklyn based Bastard Jazz - who have previously presented works by Soul Clap, Phil Gerus and Dead Horse Beats. From the deep, sexy and soulful house of "I Found You" (feat Dezeray Dawn ) to the spiritual Afro vibe of "Last Call" and the rather Bugz In The Attic sounding "Anyway" (feat Yemi) - this is a solid release.

  1. Throwdown
  2. Over & Over
  3. Over & Over (MRSK remix)
Review: Hot on the heels of Put Your Weight On It, his excellent recent EP for Running Back, Todd Osborn returns to Jared Wilson's label, 7777, with another dose of hard-to-pigeonhole dancefloor funk. "Throwdown" sets the tone, melding raw machine beats with rave-era acid bass, Belgian techno stabs and near psychedelic electronics. "Over & Over" , meanwhile, laces UK garage style melodies, darting synths and punchy vocal samples over a vintage house breakbeat. That track is given the remix treatment by MRSK, who turns it into an unfeasibly intense, jacking chunk of vintage acid house. It's the aural equivalent of being violently assaulted down a dark alley, only with less blood and more dancing.

Review: Conoley Ospovat, having crossed paths with deep heads like Pier Bucci, Pablo Bolivar, and Area, now turns up with a fully-realized EP for Kimochi. Solitude is a pulsing meditation, but with the rays of sunshine breaking throughout, it's clear that if it's alone, it's not lonely. The springtime sounds are full of optimism as well as introspection. Ambient house for the adventurous.

  1. The Other People Place - "Sorrow & A Cup Of Joe" (6:23)
  2. Mystic Tribe AI - "Telepathic Seduction" (5:44)
Review: Given that Warp has finally bowed to pressure and reissued James Stinson's sole album under The Other People Place guise (2001's peerless Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe), there was an inevitability about this 12" getting the re-press treatment. It first came out on Clone back in 2002, and paired a fine Stinson solo effort with a rare outing for DJ Stingray as Mystic Tribe A.I. Stinson's "Sorrow & A Cup of Joe" is a thing of rare beauty: a spacey, 4/4 electro cut blessed with bubbly electronics, alien chord progressions, heavy sub-bass and a fluttering, melancholic vocal sample. On the flip, Stingray's "Telepathic Production" is a dreamy chunk of outer space warmth driven by chunky hip-hop breakbeats and an undulating bassline.

  4. Cognition (7:22)
Review: Still buzzing from the reaction to his recent album as Specter on Sound Signature, Andres Ordonez joins forces with old pal Jose Rico for the first Our Own Organization EP in three years. We'd argue it has been worth the wait, too, because all four tracks are top drawer. They begin with "My Mind Is Gone", a wonderfully deep and laidback affair where spacey, melancholic chords and lilting melodies gently dance atop an electro-influenced rhythm and raw analogue bass, before pushing up the tempo via the sludgy shuffle of "Special Sound". Flip the record for the hazy, piano-sporting dub-house warmth of "Days of Old" and a blissful chunk of mid-tempo deepness that recalls both the glory days of Italian dream house and the head-in-the-clouds wonder of ambient techno.

Review: Long-time Amsterdam selector and digger Ouvrijster goes legit on Sleazy Beats Black Ops new label Make Believe Disco with three immaculate slices of glitterball deep house. "Lazarus" is a sprightly piece of Farina-level jazzy magic with persistent keys and subtle dub effects, "Mostly You" ups the jack factor with layers of hypnotic rippling washes and "Flamboyant" dims the lights with a sultry, loopy groove and the perfect balance of cosmic flare. Stunning.

Review: Over and over and over, young German Kevin just continues to deliver pedigree house gold. Classic jacks, slippery grooves, warm feels. Following the likes of Lauren Lo Sung, Demuja and Signal St, Kevin's the perfect fit for House Puff as he dishes out four slabs of sterling. "Keeper" lives up to its name with its crisp groove and hip-snaking hook while "Blessed To Dance" takes us to mid 90s NYC for a Chandler-style bump and glide. Flip for the oceanic chord ripples of "Spiller" and, finally, the sultry, smoky struts the filtered bubbler "Grabber". Grab this while you can...

Review: First released during the Chicago house boom of 1987, "I'm Strong" remains one of the greatest Fingers Inc collaborations between Larry Heard and Robert Owens. This reissue on Heard's own Alleviated imprint draws together the two most essential versions of the track. On the A-side, you'll find Heard's instrumental version - an intoxicating blend of layered, delay-laden drum machine percussion, looped organ stabs and alien electronics. Owens comes to the fore on the flipside House Remix, laying down one of his most iconic vocal performances - a mixture of soulful singing and atmospheric speech - over one of Heard's most distinctive productions.

The now Berlin based producer serves up dreamy and mesmerizing lo-fi house on the splendid Idlehour EP, as heard on terrific jams such as the wonderful opener "Club Fever" while the zeitgeist of early '90s IDM is captured stylishly on the mysterious "Broken Bell" as well as on the dreamy, ambient house "Lolli".

The Loneliness Your Love Destroys (limited 12" + insert)

  1. When The Shades Open (7:38)
  2. The Loneliness Your Love Destroys (5:02)
  3. Into The Night (7:09)
Review: It's been some two years since Pacific Horizons last cast their spell on us with some original material, though Pacific Wizard Foundation did seek out a diverse range of contemporaries to delve into their discography for last year's self-explanatory Remix EP. The Balearic gods have answered the calls and ushered in a fresh batch of Pacific Horizons goodness to broaden your own mental horizons. Still wonderfully diverse in their outlook, the three tracks on Loneliness Destroys range from the ragged yet pensive box jam work out of "When The Shades Open" to the downbeat wave "The Loneliness Your Love Destroys" which inspired the record's title. Closer "Into The Night" veers off into twilight Balearic ballad territory.

  4. Father (5:11)
Review: Lush deep house with a dash of balearica on the label arm of Switzerland's respected Zukunft Club, following up some great releases by Jimi Jules and Look Like. The grooves this time come courtesy of Pacifica. Comprised of Balint Dobozi and Domenico Ferrari, they follow up a couple of great releases on local imprint Drumpoet Community - and this further refines their trademark sound. "Heaven Machine" is made up of all the right elements: steady beats, heavy bass lines, polyrhythmic synth arpeggios as well as some vocal and electric guitar additions. From the pop-inflected island dream of the title track that features some smooth vocals by one Arvild J Baud, the hypnotic and ethereal groove excursion of "Lochergut" right through to the melancholic yet bittersweet ambient bliss of "Father" - this is a fine release indeed

  1. Looking To The Sky (5:41)
  2. Summer Season (4:37)
Review: Last seen on Dekmantel as part of Mephisto Frequency Oscillator alongside Early Sounds Collective pal Massimo Di Lena, Rio Padice pitches up on Housewax for the Looking To The Sky 12". The two tracks here explore Padice's deeper side, but it all still feels vintage in origin, with "Looking To The Sky", in particularly, coming blessed with the sort of dreamy warmth and undulating low-end shuffle that have long been hallmarks of Larry Heard productions. "Summer Season" is a little brighter and breezier, with twinkling electronics, cheery melodies and drawn-out chords riding a synth bass-heavy late '80s deep house groove.

  1. Party Time (6:29)
  2. Raw Love (5:37)
Review: Despite both tracks appearing on BBE's killer retrospective of Pal Joey's influential early '90s work, 2013's "Hot Music", demand for original copies of the producer's 1990 EP "#2" has remained incredibly high. It makes sense, then, that the producer has decided to reissue the two-tracker. A-side "Party Time" combines spacey NYC deep house tropes and a surprisingly sub-heavy bassline with a hip-hop head's approach to sampling (the vocal hook was apparently lifted from a Brooklyn Express record). Arguably even better - and certainly deeper - is flipside "Raw Love", which savagely chops and loops loved-up lifts from MFSB classic "Love Is The Message" and turns them into hypnotic deep house gold.

  2. Secretsundaze - "Motorway Jam" (7:04)
Review: The third volume in the Dance 2017 series is notable for featuring the first collaborative production from Giles Smith and James Priestley under the Secretsundaze moniker. Given that they delivered their first combined mix CD some ten years ago, "Motorway" has been a long time coming. It's also rather good, offering a hypnotic and wide-eyed blend of urgent, 128 BPM percussion, car horn style synth stabs, heavy bass and swirling string loops. It's not exactly Kraftwerk's "Autobahn" for the tech-house generation, but we sense the Robots would approve. Less surprising is Palm Trax's "Outflight", a positive and melodious chunk of synthesizer-heavy deep house goodness full of new age melodies, darting synth-bass and crunchy drum machine hits.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Uzuri can always be trusted as an on-point barometer of the strongest currents in contemporary deep house, and here they welcome a new talent into their midst in the form of Panama Keys. "Panamarama" is a gorgeous suite of organic instrumentation, all Spanish guitar licks and pattering bongos, which then get handed over to the mighty Joe Clausell for the soaring, energised "Harvest Remix". "Vyrgin Island" may well be the stand-out track on the record with its infectious flute lines, chiming vibes and sensual, punchy bassline, but don't overlook the blissful ambience of final vignette "Flying Whiles".
