  3. Cody Currie - "Space Waitress" (6:53)
  4. Mangabey - "Dream Up" (4:31)
Review: Just under a year has passed since France's Groovence took off into the ether with their inaugural "Cosmic Groove" collection. The wait's been worth it, though, as they return with four more space jams of the highest calibre. Moonee & Tour set the scene with a church-bound deep house bubbler while Embezzlement Society follows up with a set of dreamy breaks so breezy you'll feel two stone lighter by the breakdown. Flip for a sweet-shuffled jacking session from Cody Currie before Mangabey brings us back down to earth softly with the hazy chimes and evocative soul of "Dream Up." Bon voyage.

Rotate Freely (140 gram vinyl 12")

  2. Natan H - "Crusin'" (5:55)
  3. Chicago Skyway - "Ungentle Into The Good Night" (5:13)
  4. Mick Welch - "Tetra Hi" (6:33)
Review: After some downtime for the first half of the year, long running Californian label Altered Moods Recordings returns in triumphant fashion with one of those split 12" releases that sounds destined to stay in many a house DJs record box. Inspired by the Freerotation festival, label boss Malcolm Moore has called on artists who have either played or attended the cultish Welsh gathering for this Rotate Freely 12". Along with Moore, Natan H, Chicago Skyway and Mick Welch all contribute with the supple "Ungentle Into The Good Night" a particular highlight but all are worthy of gracing the soundsystem at Baskerville Hall.

  3. Pie On The Sly (6:12)
  4. Almost Champion (6:10)
Review:  Leigh Morgan is one of the three points on the Fancy Human power triangle (he's one of three label heads) and also has a strong reputation for delivering deep house on other labels too. Here he whips up three new sizzlers for our listening pleasure - the looped, mid pace back and forth grooves of "Dilly Of A Pickle", the distorted and woozy late 80s ecstasy vibes of "Pie On The Sly" and the malfunctioning stop/start electronics of "Almost Champion". The opener also gets a "Dubfloor remix" by Chocky, who turns in a warm and seductive late night '90s house joint.

Cockring D'amore 004 (limited hand-stamped 12")
Cat: CRDA 004. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Track 1 (10:13)
  2. Track 2 (6:25)
  3. Track 3 (5:35)
Review: Discodromo's playfully titled CockRing d'Amore edit series hits its fourth chapter with three hypnotic, transcendental edits from respected Osaka groove sculptor and selector Mori Ra. Three unnamed tracks, the focus should be strictly on the soul at play... The sweeping cinematica and narrative of "Track 1", the glistening cascades and layered vibraphone elements of "Track 2" and the lolloping, Nordic-feeling chugger finale. Chimes, electric bass and distant fiddles a-go-go, it's another singular trip from both Mori and a highly limited dispatch from CockTail d'Amore.

  3. Mangrove Dawn (7:48)
  4. Skies Reprise (6:38)
Review: Joe Morris is back in action on Jacaranda Skies 8.02, exploring more of that balmy sound that Pleasure Unit love so dearly when having a good time down by the marina. This is how yacht rock would sound if it had got with the party program, not least on the illustrious "Jacaranda Skies". "The Lost Garden" is a more mysterious affair that trades in immersive atmospherics with a distinctly soundtracky feel. "Mangrove Dawn" is a sleepy affair that wraps around you like a perfectly timed silken scarf, and then "Skies Reprise" lets Morris sail back into those bountiful waters that gave us the lead track.

Cat: IIB 044. Rel: 31 May 16
  1. Golden Tides
  2. Bayou
  3. Light Of The Moon
  4. Mpondo Theme
Review: Is It Balearic releases a debut EP from Clandestino's Joe Morris. 4 tracks of lush electronic grooves. The title track Golden Tides is a mid tempo houser with beautiful pads and soft arpeggios. Late afternoon sundowner vibrations. The second track Bayou has touches of Sueno Latino about it., an afterdark evocative tropical house trip. On the flip the first track Light Of The Moon is a more reflective slo mo affair. Warm pads and 808 sounds melting into cicadas. Finally we come to Mpondo Theme. Sounds of nature , Kalimba and loose percussion all sit together and watch the sun dip over the savannah horizon. A proper EP this covering all shades.

I Ran (12")
Cat: DH 014. Rel: 21 Mar 18
  1. I Ran (8:25)
  2. I Ran (Simple Symmetry remix) (6:47)
Review: Given that this is Moscoman's first solo single on the Disco Halal imprint he inaugurated in 2015, it's perhaps unsurprising that he's saved something rather special for the occasion. "I Ran" is a throbbing, high-octane peak-time treat, where haunting Arabic vocals seemingly float over a thrusting, arpeggio-driven groove and bubbly, off-kilter machine drums. It's druggy and intoxicating, of course, but also fiendishly heavy and pleasingly unorthodox. On the flipside, old pals Simple Symmetry re-imagine "I Ran" as a sticky and trippy chunk of organic Arabic dub disco, complete with toasty bass and razor-sharp electric guitars. It's not quite as thrilling as Moscoman's original version, but it's a close run thing.

Cat: SCR 003. Rel: 05 Feb 16
  1. Polyphonic Spree (7:56)
  2. Glow On (8:20)
  3. Munk Funk (5:45)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Mount Liberation Unlimited's debut 12" on Junk Yard Connections, Astro Travelling Life, has become one of the most in-demand deep house releases of 2014. A year on, they finally deliver a follow-up, this time on Superconscious Records. All three tracks primarily succeed due to their blend of rough analogue elements - crusty drum machine hits, tape hiss, and so on - and the kind of dreamy, stargazing chords and melodies that have always been a hall mark of classic deep house. It's the Detroit techno influenced "Polyphonic Spree" - all cymbal-heavy shuffle, stretched-out chords and funky synthesizers - that arguably stands out, though it's a tough call given the high quality threshold throughout.

  4. Deep (feat Seebase - DJ Oyster edit) (5:51)
Review: Only those with long memories will remember David 'Move D' Moufang's short-lived Housegrooves alias. It was only used for a single 1993 release, Volume 1, a 12" that has long been in-demand amongst deep house diggers. Misfit Melodies have decided to give it the reissue treatment, partnering two of the EP's most lauded cuts with fresh remixes and edits. In the former category you'll find the low-slung analogue bass, rolling beats and spacey synth melodies of "I Gave My Love", and the more bumpin', New Jersey influenced Seebase collaboration "Deep", which here gets a slight edit from DJ Oyster. The most impressive rework comes from Shan and Gerd Janson, who turn "I Gave My Love" into a saucer-eyed chunk of piano-heavy, rave-era breakbeat-house bliss.

Review: Oh yes! Our main man DJ Jus' Ed teams up with the legendary Move D (Workshop, Magic Mountain High etc, etc, etc) for a new collaborative effort on his always on-point Underground Quality, home to artists such as Fred P, Levon Vincent and Juniper. There's a whopping four cuts on here and our picks of the bunch have to be "From Bridgeport To Heidelberg" - for that winding melody and gritty percussion flex - and "Hustler Suite", a bass-heavy deep house roller for you to meditate on. This is yet another Underground Quality gem.

  1. Move D - "To The Disco 77'" (Move D live rework) (9:23)
  2. Move D & Justin Carter - "Leaves" (Basement demo) (9:59)
Review: Legendary German DJ/producer David "Move D" Moufang first appeared on Electric Minds back in 2013. "To The Disco '77" was an undoubted highlight of that 12" and here gets the remix treatment from the man himself. His "Live Rework" is a wonderfully loose and lucid affair, with quietly jazzy guitars, New Jersey garage organs and headline-grabbing vocal samples wrapping themselves around foreboding, low-end chords and nifty, on the fly drum machine programming. On the flip, Moufang joins forces with Mister Saturday Night man Justin Carter for "Leaves (Basement Demo)", a wonderfully deep, rich and spacey house cut that recalls the long-serving German producer's intelligent techno era output (albeit with the added warmth of head-in-the-clouds deep house).

  1. Taba Taba (6:39)
  2. T-T-Tool (7:02)
  3. Voyager (6:28)
  4. Whistler (4:42)
Review: Following fine appearances on No Bad Edits and Blind Jack's Journey, rising star Mozaika heads to Public Possession with his most expansive release to date. As with previous releases, he does a great job in combining the kind of starry, relaxed synthesizer sounds more frequently found on new age ambient releases with rhythm tracks that will have you surging towards the dancefloor with your arms aloft. We're particularly enjoying whistle-heavy opener "Taba Taba" and the sparkling, saucer-eyed jauntiness of "Voyager", where jangling piano riffs, carnival whistles, and dream house chords ride a thrusting, jack track style groove. That said, the undulating Balearic house hit of closer "Whistler" is almost as good.

  1. Start Get Yo Self (8:18)
  2. Generation House (6:24)
  3. No Bullshit (7:47)
Review: It would be fair to say that no other artist is quite as associated with Bass Culture Records' "Limited" offshoot as Mihai Popescu AKA MP. In fact, since the series' inception in 2016, he's provided all but one of the releases. Thanks to this latest 12", that remarkable record stays in tact. The Romanian producer explores his more positive side on opener "Start Get Yourself", a clever combination of sweaty, jacking machine drums and fluid, watery and downright dreamy electronics that runs for eight mesmerizing minutes. Flip the disc, first for the deliciously bass-heavy and bumping "Generation House", where jazzy electric piano motifs rise above a swinging rhythm track, and then the early British tech-house lusciousness of "No Bullshit".

Review: It's two years since Nick 'Mr Beatnick' Wilson released the final part of his brilliant Synthetes Trilogy on Don't Be Afraid, and a year since his similarly impressive Marshmallows 12" on Tief. As usual, he's in fine form, kicking things off with the spacey but melancholic synthesizer chords, sun-kissed electronic melodies and rolling, Italo-influenced bottom end of "Stutter". His renowned beat programming skills come to the fore on the Detroit futurism-goes-broken beat brilliance of "Jellyfish", before "Formed In The Stance" offers up a deeper, marginally darker and certainly moodier take on broken techno. Finally, he's back to his sunny, melodious best with the sparkling brilliance of "Obsidian Morning". Stellar stuff, as always.

Cat: GET 7607. Rel: 23 May 18
  1. Can You Feel It (5:19)
  2. Washing Machine (4:20)
Review: It's not often you find two stone cold Chicago house classics squeezed onto one 7" single, but that's what the folks at TRAX have done here. Hot on the heels of the release of Larry Heard's first album in 20-odd years, they've dug out two of his most celebrated early works. On the A-side you'll find the original instrumental mix of "Can You Feel It", arguably the first deep house anthem and a track so breathtakingly timeless that it's still capable of sending shivers down the spine some 32 years after it was made. Turn to the flip for "Washing Machine", the mind-altering early Chicago house rub - all snappy drum machine snare fills, mind-altering motifs, trippy delays and hissing cymbal hits - that remains one of Heard's most potent tracks.

Review: 25 years deep and still sounding as timeless and genre-defining as ever, Trax revisit their 2002 package with this highly limited reissue. Complete with the essential emotive Martin Luther King-adorned sermon, Chuck D's house-proud Jack narrative and Robert Owens deep yearning croons, this is the ultimate collection of versions that rise above the millions of copies and bootlegs and blatant rip-offs this track has endured over the years. 1. Visions (6:04)
  2. Alittlewhile (6:34)
  3. Modern Conversations (6:55)
Review: Mr. Fries is up next on Soulphiction's esteemed Philpot imprint with some deep dusty and downright sensual house that brazenly takes its cues from the Kenny Dixon Jr. and Three Chairs sound out of the Motor City and when such tributes are this flattering - it's all good. From the sweltering A side cut "Visions" which is perfect for those long hot sexy nights, the evocative and soulful vibe continues well into the B side. "Alittlewhile" is a sombre, woozy gospel inspired cut in the vein of the aforementioned Dixon's Forevernevermore opus, then the pumpin' and funky "Modern Conversations" ends things on a more positive note, complete with life affirming vocal samples and tough as hell MPC loops to boot. This Dortmund based producer has appeared previously on Contrary, Soul Notes and Wolf Music.

Review: Established back in 2011, Singapore's Midnight Shift label has grown to reflect the diverse bookings across the house and techno spectrum that pepper their associated club nights. For example, the past four 12"s from the label have spanned Andreas Gehm, John Heckle, Eduardo De La Calle and Portuguese producer Kaspar. Up next it is Colin 'Mr. G' McBean whose Ternasek 12" arrives amidst a rich vein of killer singles from the man widely regarded as genuine UK house royalty. According to Midnight Shift, these three tracks were made after McBean was struck with inspiration on a visit to the Singaporean city of the same name, with aural markers of his time there sunk deep into the pulsing functionalism of the productions. As with the majority of Mr G material, this are prime club grade tech-edged house rollers.

Review: Junkyard Connections and Karlovac co-founder Mr Tophat has forged a career out of collaborations. Here, though, he flies solo, delivering a first EP for Munich's Public Possession. Both tracks are deliciously woozy and quietly positive, with fluid synth lines and bubbly electronics being fused with sparse, off-kilter percussion tracks. A-side "Kiss of Sandro" is peculiarly jazzy and sleepy, with robotic vocals spreading out over spacey synths, chiming melodies and cheap-sounding machine drums. Flipside "KitKat Maze" is, if anything, even more out there, and boasts a mixture of creepy music box melodies, curious xylophone lines and metronomic deep house percussion.
