Monsieur Blue 002 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MOBLU 002. Rel: 15 May 17
  1. Track 1 (7:16)
  2. Track 2 (7:12)
  3. Track 3 (6:14)
Review: The first record from the mysterious Monsieur Blue attracted plenty of favourable attention from the deep house and minimal fraternity when it dropped last year, and so the anonymous artist rolls around for a second bout with this sterling three-tracker. Deep and dubby pads meet with rock-solid grooves on the A1, while the A2 track strips things back to an insistent rhythm, emphasising the space in the mix. The B-side track meanwhile channels a funky energy into the spaced out headspace Monsieur Blue inhabits, completing a strong trio of club-ready trippers for the dreamiest of dancefloors.

Monsieur Blue 003 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MOBLU 003. Rel: 05 Feb 18
  1. Track 1 (6:45)
  2. Track 2 (6:14)
  3. Track 3 (7:14)
Review: The mysterious Monsieur Blue returns for a third time to unfurl more of that supremely elegant, dusky deep house alchemy that has made his first two records so desirable. Capturing the woozy mood of the early evening or the late morning, "Track 1" billows out on a bed of mellow pads and an undulating, shuffling beat. "Track 2" does little to shake things up, instead maintaining that beautifully meditative atmosphere and coasting on gentle filter sweeps and sturdy, rolling percussion. "Track 3" injects a little more bite into the beat without sacrificing the gentle lilt of the melodic content, making this three impeccable slices of the deepest minimal house money can buy.

Monsieur Blue 004 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MOBLU 004. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Track 1
  2. Track 2
  3. Track 3
Review: It's the fourth go round for Monsieur Blue, who steps back up to the plate with another three surefire jams from the slinkier side of the minimal house spectrum. "Track 1" is an exquisite trip through blue-hued keys and shuffling drums, striking a fine balance between the lounge and the dancefloor. "Track 2" takes a moodier approach, eking out mysterious chords and injecting a little juice into the low end to suit a more rugged situation, and then "Track 3" jettisons the ballast and pings off into a dubbed out sphere of house music perfectly crafted for the times you want to get lost at sea.

Blind Box Basic 001 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BBOXB 001 . Rel: 15 May 17
  1. Geogette (7:47)
  2. Balade Sur Le Chemien De Fer (7:02)
  3. Mais Ou Se Cache Donc Le Zebu (6:50)
Review: Julien Sabre and Konstress' Blind Box label is branching out with a new sublabel entitled Blind Box Basic, which seeks to explore "a more minimalistic approach to the dance floor." In order to get things rolling, they're turning to Chris Carrier and his Monsieur Georget alias for three tracks of on-point, rolling house grooves. Carrier's experience in handling heads down tracks is evident throughout, from the insistent surge of "Geogette" to the hazy tones of "Balade Sur Le Chemien De Fer", while "Mais Ou Se Cache Donc Le Zebu" heads straight to freaked out minimal territory.

  3. Call Me (5:35)
  4. Function (5:14)
Review: Yes, here we go, another lovely reissue of this utter Mood II Swing classic from the 90's! Last time we saw this it was on a considerably grubbier bootleg and featuring only the two mixes of "Move Me"- which are obviously the bees-knees in house music and probably as pioneering as the Chicago generation before them (that bassline on the original mix is simply irresistible!) - while this time you also get "Call Me" and "Function", two dusty-as-hell floor swipers that'll get anybody swinging from side to side with the right mood...

  4. Running Number (Longhair Luv remix) (7:23)
Review: Vienna imprint Luv Shack Records is opening up yet another chapter in 2018 by welcoming Irish DJ afficionado Andrew Johnston AKA Moodtrax (Extended Play/Snuff Cuts). His brand of warm and moody house is a worthy addition to the label. The Perfect Illusion EP opens up with the sexy late night bounce of "Never Can get Away" on the A side, while the flipside features the uplifting and downright electric elation of "Running Number" nailing that classic house sound of old. The Berlin duo Longhair Luv serve up a damn fine remix up next, which takes the track deeper and into the earlier hours of the morning, on this sombre and hypnotic rendition.

Equilibrium (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: NICE 004. Rel: 21 Nov 16
  1. Moodymanc - "Where's The Story" (8:02)
  2. Lil' Mark & Jcub - "Epic 40" (11:20)
Review: NICETRAXUK is Stuart and Patrick's latest musical venture, and with a proven ear for picking out
exceptional House music, the labels timeless sound is a true representation of the pair's outstanding taste.
Their first vinyl release titled 'Equilibrium' features a collaborative track from Lil' Mark & Jcub plus a sole
outing from Moodymanc.
Lil' Mark who used to share a flat with Derrick Carter, put out his first release in 2000 when he
collaborated with Rob Mello, and since then has gone on to build an impressive back catalogue of releases
on labels including Leftroom Records, Classic Music Company, Lost My Dog, Hot Waves and MFF (Music
For Freaks).
Jcub who teams up with Lil' Mark is known to many for his hit record on Defected called "Give Me Your
Love" which picked up industry wide support, and was a firm favourite with Pete Tong who included it as
part of his "All Gone Pete Tong Ibiza 2014" compilation.
Moodymanc known to some as Dubble D, was also a major part of 2020 Soundsystem. Along with releases
on his own Well Cut Records his music can be found on labels including Local Talk, Tsuba, Exploited, 2020
Vision and Get Physical Music plus a long list of others.
From the people behind this release, the artists involved, the artwork to the timeless sound of the music, it
will come as no surprise that it's packed with quality and dancefloor appeal.

  1. Nocturne (7:11)
  2. Pause (4:50)
  3. Weird Balace (6:17)
  4. Party Line (6:47)
Review: Parisian deep house DJ Joss Moog's cheeky exploits have mainly come to appear on local Phil Weeks' esteemed Robsoul imprint, however he's also found time to release on his own Ondule label - which he has run with Jean Ce since 2015. Introducing the the Nocturne EP, which follows up some great releases thus far in 2018 by Labeuz, Reubents and Around7. From the title track's moody and hypnotic bounce, to the smoky jazz room vibe of "Pause" or the tough and funky boompty business of "Party Line" - again Moog perfectly bridges the gap between disco, funk, soul/jazz and hip hop: in a way that can only be matched possibly by Berlin's Money $ex crew.

  1. Sweet Sweet
  2. Sweet Sweet (Oskar Offermann remix)
  3. The Game
Review: Smallville present a deliciously hypnotic taste of what to expect from the forthcoming Moomin album, further showcasing the Berlin based producer's penchant for deeply driving house sounds. It's pretty difficult not to get swept up by the tender melodic sound at the core of "Sweet Sweet" which swings in and out of focus amidst some subtly effective drum rhythms. Flipside, the track is squeezed into what begins as a minimal shuffle by Oskar Offermann, before gradually unfurling into something jacking and euphoric. "The Game" is a swampy, pensive finale, with woozy deep lying melodies gently cascading around loose limbed syncopation.

  1. You Are Sweet Sweet (10:50)
  2. Room 207 (6:39)
  3. Right On (6:22)
Review: The second release on the amusingly titled Fuck Reality label comes from Smallville regular Moomin, AKA German producer Sebastian Genz. While flipsides "Room 207" and "Right On" are as deep, woozy, starry and twinkling as you'd expect from the long-established deep house producer, it's A-side "You Are Sweet Sweet" that will undoubtedly attract most attention. It's effectively an unofficial remix of Candi Staton's dancefloor anthem "You Got The Love", with the legendary vocalist's iconic vocal riding a chunky, organic deep house cut big on rolling, disco-influenced percussion, chiming melodies and rich chords. It's substantially different from the original, of course, but the familiarity of the vocal will ensure a great dancefloor response every time it's dropped.

  1. Aquarama (6:52)
  2. Peven Everett - "I Can't Believe I Loved Her" (Moomin version) (6:21)
  3. Stotheh (6:09)
Review: Having recently impressed with their contribution to the F*ck Reality series, Moomin returns to the comforting surrounds of long-time home Smallville Records. As usual, Aquarama sees him exploring the deeper, more melancholic side of house music, with typically impressive results. The headline attraction is undoubtedly a stellar rework of Peven Everett's 2001 soulful house classic "I Can't Believe I Loved Her", which Moonin has successfully turned into a misty-eyed chunk of melodious, bittersweet deep house bliss. In comparison, the other two tracks don't sparkle quite as much, but are still hugely enjoyable. The title track - all cyclical acid motifs, drifting vocal samples, shuffling beats and chiming melodies - is particularly tasty.

Review: Just under a year has passed since France's Groovence took off into the ether with their inaugural "Cosmic Groove" collection. The wait's been worth it, though, as they return with four more space jams of the highest calibre. Moonee & Tour set the scene with a church-bound deep house bubbler while Embezzlement Society follows up with a set of dreamy breaks so breezy you'll feel two stone lighter by the breakdown. Flip for a sweet-shuffled jacking session from Cody Currie before Mangabey brings us back down to earth softly with the hazy chimes and evocative soul of "Dream Up." Bon voyage.

Review: After some downtime for the first half of the year, long running Californian label Altered Moods Recordings returns in triumphant fashion with one of those split 12" releases that sounds destined to stay in many a house DJs record box. Inspired by the Freerotation festival, label boss Malcolm Moore has called on artists who have either played or attended the cultish Welsh gathering for this Rotate Freely 12". Along with Moore, Natan H, Chicago Skyway and Mick Welch all contribute with the supple "Ungentle Into The Good Night" a particular highlight but all are worthy of gracing the soundsystem at Baskerville Hall.

Review:  Leigh Morgan is one of the three points on the Fancy Human power triangle (he's one of three label heads) and also has a strong reputation for delivering deep house on other labels too. Here he whips up three new sizzlers for our listening pleasure - the looped, mid pace back and forth grooves of "Dilly Of A Pickle", the distorted and woozy late 80s ecstasy vibes of "Pie On The Sly" and the malfunctioning stop/start electronics of "Almost Champion". The opener also gets a "Dubfloor remix" by Chocky, who turns in a warm and seductive late night '90s house joint.

  2. Track 2 (6:25)
  3. Track 3 (5:35)
Review: Discodromo's playfully titled CockRing d'Amore edit series hits its fourth chapter with three hypnotic, transcendental edits from respected Osaka groove sculptor and selector Mori Ra. Three unnamed tracks, the focus should be strictly on the soul at play... The sweeping cinematica and narrative of "Track 1", the glistening cascades and layered vibraphone elements of "Track 2" and the lolloping, Nordic-feeling chugger finale. Chimes, electric bass and distant fiddles a-go-go, it's another singular trip from both Mori and a highly limited dispatch from CockTail d'Amore.

Review: Is It Balearic releases a debut EP from Clandestino's Joe Morris. 4 tracks of lush electronic grooves. The title track Golden Tides is a mid tempo houser with beautiful pads and soft arpeggios. Late afternoon sundowner vibrations. The second track Bayou has touches of Sueno Latino about it., an afterdark evocative tropical house trip. On the flip the first track Light Of The Moon is a more reflective slo mo affair. Warm pads and 808 sounds melting into cicadas. Finally we come to Mpondo Theme. Sounds of nature , Kalimba and loose percussion all sit together and watch the sun dip over the savannah horizon. A proper EP this covering all shades.

Review: Joe Morris is back in action on Jacaranda Skies 8.02, exploring more of that balmy sound that Pleasure Unit love so dearly when having a good time down by the marina. This is how yacht rock would sound if it had got with the party program, not least on the illustrious "Jacaranda Skies". "The Lost Garden" is a more mysterious affair that trades in immersive atmospherics with a distinctly soundtracky feel. "Mangrove Dawn" is a sleepy affair that wraps around you like a perfectly timed silken scarf, and then "Skies Reprise" lets Morris sail back into those bountiful waters that gave us the lead track.

I Ran (12")
Cat: DH 014. Rel: 26 Mar 18
  1. I Ran (8:25)
  2. I Ran (Simple Symmetry remix) (6:47)
Review: Given that this is Moscoman's first solo single on the Disco Halal imprint he inaugurated in 2015, it's perhaps unsurprising that he's saved something rather special for the occasion. "I Ran" is a throbbing, high-octane peak-time treat, where haunting Arabic vocals seemingly float over a thrusting, arpeggio-driven groove and bubbly, off-kilter machine drums. It's druggy and intoxicating, of course, but also fiendishly heavy and pleasingly unorthodox. On the flipside, old pals Simple Symmetry re-imagine "I Ran" as a sticky and trippy chunk of organic Arabic dub disco, complete with toasty bass and razor-sharp electric guitars. It's not quite as thrilling as Moscoman's original version, but it's a close run thing.

  3. Munk Funk (5:45)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Mount Liberation Unlimited's debut 12" on Junk Yard Connections, Astro Travelling Life, has become one of the most in-demand deep house releases of 2014. A year on, they finally deliver a follow-up, this time on Superconscious Records. All three tracks primarily succeed due to their blend of rough analogue elements - crusty drum machine hits, tape hiss, and so on - and the kind of dreamy, stargazing chords and melodies that have always been a hall mark of classic deep house. It's the Detroit techno influenced "Polyphonic Spree" - all cymbal-heavy shuffle, stretched-out chords and funky synthesizers - that arguably stands out, though it's a tough call given the high quality threshold throughout.

Review: Legendary German DJ/producer David "Move D" Moufang first appeared on Electric Minds back in 2013. "To The Disco '77" was an undoubted highlight of that 12" and here gets the remix treatment from the man himself. His "Live Rework" is a wonderfully loose and lucid affair, with quietly jazzy guitars, New Jersey garage organs and headline-grabbing vocal samples wrapping themselves around foreboding, low-end chords and nifty, on the fly drum machine programming. On the flip, Moufang joins forces with Mister Saturday Night man Justin Carter for "Leaves (Basement Demo)", a wonderfully deep, rich and spacey house cut that recalls the long-serving German producer's intelligent techno era output (albeit with the added warmth of head-in-the-clouds deep house).

Review: Following fine appearances on No Bad Edits and Blind Jack's Journey, rising star Mozaika heads to Public Possession with his most expansive release to date. As with previous releases, he does a great job in combining the kind of starry, relaxed synthesizer sounds more frequently found on new age ambient releases with rhythm tracks that will have you surging towards the dancefloor with your arms aloft. We're particularly enjoying whistle-heavy opener "Taba Taba" and the sparkling, saucer-eyed jauntiness of "Voyager", where jangling piano riffs, carnival whistles, and dream house chords ride a thrusting, jack track style groove. That said, the undulating Balearic house hit of closer "Whistler" is almost as good.

Review: It would be fair to say that no other artist is quite as associated with Bass Culture Records' "Limited" offshoot as Mihai Popescu AKA MP. In fact, since the series' inception in 2016, he's provided all but one of the releases. Thanks to this latest 12", that remarkable record stays in tact. The Romanian producer explores his more positive side on opener "Start Get Yourself", a clever combination of sweaty, jacking machine drums and fluid, watery and downright dreamy electronics that runs for eight mesmerizing minutes. Flip the disc, first for the deliciously bass-heavy and bumping "Generation House", where jazzy electric piano motifs rise above a swinging rhythm track, and then the early British tech-house lusciousness of "No Bullshit".

As usual, he's in fine form, kicking things off with the spacey but melancholic synthesizer chords, sun-kissed electronic melodies and rolling, Italo-influenced bottom end of "Stutter". His renowned beat programming skills come to the fore on the Detroit futurism-goes-broken beat brilliance of "Jellyfish", before "Formed In The Stance" offers up a deeper, marginally darker and certainly moodier take on broken techno. Finally, he's back to his sunny, melodious best with the sparkling brilliance of "Obsidian Morning". Stellar stuff, as always.

Review: 25 years deep and still sounding as timeless and genre-defining as ever, Trax revisit their 2002 package with this highly limited reissue. Complete with the essential emotive Martin Luther King-adorned sermon, Chuck D's house-proud Jack narrative and Robert Owens deep yearning croons, this is the ultimate collection of versions that rise above the millions of copies and bootlegs and blatant rip-offs this track has endured over the years. An essential addition to all collections.

Can You Feel It (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: GET 7607. Rel: 28 May 18
  1. Can You Feel It (5:19)
  2. Washing Machine (4:20)
Review: It's not often you find two stone cold Chicago house classics squeezed onto one 7" single, but that's what the folks at TRAX have done here. Hot on the heels of the release of Larry Heard's first album in 20-odd years, they've dug out two of his most celebrated early works. On the A-side you'll find the original instrumental mix of "Can You Feel It", arguably the first deep house anthem and a track so breathtakingly timeless that it's still capable of sending shivers down the spine some 32 years after it was made. Turn to the flip for "Washing Machine", the mind-altering early Chicago house rub - all snappy drum machine snare fills, mind-altering motifs, trippy delays and hissing cymbal hits - that remains one of Heard's most potent tracks.

  5. Get Together (Space BE Awkward mix) (6:49)
Review: The story of how this record on Wolf Music came to be is a shining beacon of how the underground works at its finest. Booked to play Dortmund venue Oma Doris last year, the Wolf lads were handed a CD of demos from young resident DJ Mr Fries which had them very impressed. Soon after label and artist shook hands, and now Mr Fries becomes Wolf Music's Dortmund correspondent with this blissful 5 track EP. The young German is a fine fit for the Wolf cause, brandishing a deep take on house that's got just the right amount of dust and plenty of soul in the samples used. We'd wager Mr Fries was signed up on the strength of lead track "Get Together" alone! Money $ex Records alumnus Hodini and long-time Wolf affiliate Garth BE provide extra sweetness on remix duties.
