Slick Maneuver (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: JCKBRWN 005. Rel: 27 Nov 17
  1. Shocked
  2. Run Sally Run!
  3. Slick Maneuver
  4. Perfection Valley
Review: After four volumes of smoking hot disco house business from El Nino, Jackie Brown turn their attention to debutant producer MB22, who understands the party-starting manifesto of the label intrinsically. "Shocked" kicks the record off in a flurry of heated chops and licks, all driven by a nagging hat, and then "Run Sally Run" switches stance to a winsome 80s tinged electro jam, tape-hiss included. "Slick Maneuver" takes things into smooth, boogie-indebted territory and then "Perfection Valley" rounds the record off with the kind of dusty electro funk that Moon B made his name with.

  1. I Wonder (Louie Vega Roots mix) (10:06)
  2. I Wonder (7:46)
  3. I Wonder (Sean Nostalgic dub) (5:43)
Review: Sean McCabe initially launched Good Vibrations a few years ago as a regular party in Bristol, with the assistance of local soulful house legend Deli G. This 12" marks the debut of the freshly minted offshoot label and sees McCabe join forces with regular collaborator Nathan Adams. Predictably, it's another superb slice of dancefloor soul music, with Adams' impeccable vocal a snug fit with McCabe's skipping drums, sumptuous Rhodes chords and bubbly electronic bassline. Arguably even better is Louie Vega's ten-minute Roots Mix, which replaces some of McCabe's electronics with more traditional instrumentation for an even richer and warmer dancefloor experience. McCabe's Nostalgic Dub, complete with fresh paino and synth solos, is also superb.

Review: Albuquerque's finest deep house bastion is at it once again, presenting a pure and proud brand of NJ-flavoured deep house for those who still want it soulful. Sean McCabe doesn't need telling twice, kicking off the People's Choice 12" with the uplifting funk of "Get Together". Soul2Black offers up an exquisite broken beat confection laden with deft piano work and stirring vocals from Kimberley Kennedy. Johnny Rampin' is aiming straight for the peak of the night with the peppy vibes of "Love Who Rocks You", and brian 'Keys' Thame turns the garage swing up to 11 with the utterly sassy "Best Of Your Love".

Cat: LHR 16. Rel: 04 Sep 17
  1. Vilaroel
  2. Dissfreq
  3. Carrier
  4. Guda (feat Voltery)
Review: Little is known about Medicis, other than he last appeared back in 2015 on Lazare Hoche alongside Voltery. On this, his second 12", he strikes out on his own for the Parisian deep house stable with some of that refined, head-tweaking groove fodder that has broadly defined the label since it started. "Vilaroel" features shimmering tones that call to mind Point G at his dubbiest, while "Dissfreq" takes a sweeter route into dreamy pads and lightly shuffling drums. "Carrier" is a darker, techier affair with plenty of hypnotic elements spinning in the mix, and then Mdecisi' old friend Voltery lands a hand on the downtempo delights of "Guda".

Review: Longstanding US vibe maestro Medina continues to join the dots with his new highly limited 10". "The king's Instinct" pays respect to MLK with one of the most complementary backdrops his speech has ever enjoyed. Flip for an equally historic and resonant edit as Mr Fingers gets a First Choice makeover with similar glove-fit soulful snugness. Very cleverly orchestrated and presented - results are guaranteed.

  4. Queen Of Tacos (with FYI Chris) (5:38)
Review: Having spent the last 12 months sharpening his disco credentials via a variety of re-edit EPs and sample-heavy "secret weapons", Medlar is back on Wolf doing what he does best. In this case, that means sparse, drum machine driven electro/proto house fusion ("Cascinari"), delay-heavy, stripped-back analogue house blessed with dreamy chords and grime style lo-fi synth-strings ("Nisantasi") and Ruf Dug style dancefloor sweetness seemingly created using forgotten old synthesizers, dusty drum machines and a solitary TB-303 ("Priet"). Excitingly, the EP's final track - a bustling fusion of beatbox electro rhythms, layered breakbeats, heavy bass and yearning chords - is a studio hook-up with similarly well-regarded producer FYI Chris.

  4. OTTHP (6:36)
Review: Producer Joe Deamer dons the Medrea guise for the very first time, in the process notching up the fifth release on the hyped Hokkaido Dance Club imprint. Deamer's style is, like many modern deep house and techno producers, simultaneously lo-fi and melodious, as the attractively swinging opener "Untitled" makes abundantly clear. His rich and rolling original version is given the remix treatment by Church and PT/5 regular Happa, who turns it into a wild chunk of left-field house full of discordant 8-bit melodies and off-kilter rhythms. Over on side B, Deamer delivers a jeweled goblet of liquid deep house ("Untitled 2"), before working his drum machines hard on the distorted, L.I.E.S style throb of "OTTHP".

  2. The Ritual (6:20)
  3. Let Go (10:32)
Review: Minimal techno auteur Thomas Melchior is back with some more of his sublime deepness for us. The artist known for his productions with Baby Ford and Zip steps out on his own this time on "Tracking The Psyche" for London imprint Lick My Deck. "Right Of Passage (The Induction)" is a slice of dreamy and utterly sublime deep house for early morning dancefloors. But it's more of the Melchior we know on "The Ritual" with its rolling chime-like melody and dark stabs giving momentum to a typically sparse composition. Finally "Let Go" gets all esoteric on us with this bright and hypnotic jam whose whistling melody and shamanic chant draws you in to the void ever so nicely.

  1. Feel This (5:19)
  2. Give It To The Moon (live edit) (6:00)
  3. Treasures (5:08)
  4. Give It To The Moon (4:24)
Review: Melchior Sultana has not been short of labels to release on over the past few years, from deepArtSounds and Three Fingers Musique to Minuendo and 12Records, but here he can be found inaugurating the Profound Sound label with some of his trademark deep house tones. "Feel This" is a shimmering, nocturnal groover with mystery to match its subtle funkiness, while the live edit of "Give It To The Moon" has an easier vibe about it with its lingering, warm pads and breezy swing. "Treasures" shakes things up with a jazz funk twist, letting effervescent instrumentation flirt around the crooked house beat with stunning results and then the slow, sensual original version of "Give It To The Moon" cradles the remaining run time of the EP in a downtempo haze of easy beats and stirring vocals.

Review: Larry Heard and Ron Trent aside, few are capable of producing house music as deep, soulful and lilting as largely unheralded Maltese producer Melchior Sultana. Further proof supporting this bold claim can be found on the producer's latest EP. Opener "Phased" sets the tone, with Sultana smothering a deep and groovy house rhythm with toasty bass, dreamy Rhodes chords and twinkling, delay-laden electronic motifs. He brilliantly slows things down on "Quitness", a jazzy, hip-hop tempo head-nodder rich in fluttering flute lines and eyes-closed electric piano solos, before doffing a cap to classic Italian deep house on the sumptuous "Source" and impeccably melodious "The Haze".

  3. Places We Belong To
Review: The last few years have seen Nathan Melja really hit his stride, landing on such esteemed labels as Mister Saturday Night, Black Opal and Technicolour with an addictively weird update of the classic boxjam format. Now he steps up to inaugurate Dream Real with three slices of upfront deviant business for all the sleazy dancers out there. There's no arguing with the rubbery bass tones and perfectly processed vocals on the original mix of "Jerky Teardrop", but there's also the more wave-minded delights of the "Blue Mix" version of the track to suit more reflective situations. By way of contrast, "Places We Belong To" smooths out the mood on the B-side with a low riding slice of boogie that sports just a whiff of indie thrown in for good measure.

Review: Gaetano Battista has been popping up intermittently for some time now, most notably under his own name on Boe Recordings back in 2013. Now he's adopted the name Mental Vibe Construction for this turn on Chez Damier's Courtesy Of Balance, bringing his most forthright dancefloor cuts to date. "Guru" is a muscular, punchy slice of house music executed with a Midwestern toughness and lashing of synthetic soul. "Lifestyle" is equally enchanting in its melodic qualities without skimping on the rhythm section, while "Lee Theory" takes things deeper and funkier. "Chi Soul" touches on uplifting techno tones in its illustrious synth patterns, but it's still got a house heartbeat pumping away at the centre.

Review: US Garage is alive and well thanks to the sterling work of Plastik People, although in this case they've turned their attention to the South Eastern hemisphere and the impeccable work of Australian producer Meraki Soul. The vocal chops, swinging drums and cheery melodic flourishes on Scott Diaz's dub mixes of "Damn Sure" on the A side doff their cap to Todd Edwards with pride, and you can hear the Defected regular's studio prowess coming through at every angle of the mix. The original however is the one to dig into if you want a smoother ride, with Meraki Soul conjuring up the kind of warm, soul-inflected sound that could suit such a wide range of situations.

Review: Paris label D.KO presents to us local lad Mezigue who serves up some deep disco house with an unmistakable French touch like on the dynamic opener "Track 1 (Euromillion)" until he goes into low-slung slo-mo Territory that references Moodymann like on "1///1::2 15". On the flip there's some more great grooves like on the tough house stomp of "Du Son Pour Les Gars Surs" which has a jacking groove beneath some clever disco loops and "A L'ancienne On L'appelait Papy" which has that classic early '90s US house vibe reminiscent of Blaze.

Review: New York-based Evan Michael has been spotted on some respectable labels in the past, from Drumpoet Community to AirDrop, most recently appearing alongside Marco Passarani on a split 12" for Cin Cin. He makes his first appearance on the ever-prolific Hudd Trax with this diverse grip of deep house jams, leading in with the emotive tones of "Duende". "PCH Passing" is a fluttering affair laden with sweet natured synths, but it also knows when to rain the cascading melodies in to let the groove take the lead. "Machine Pepper" builds up around an on-point bassline and powerful brass stabs, and then "Rainmaker" finishes the EP off with some tricksy delay use and a crooked beat.

Review: Surely one of the finest operators in the UK underground, Miles Atmospheric released his last album under his own name Miles Sagnia back in 2014, and now he finally returns to the long player format to unfurl his vision of deep, driving techno. This time he's appearing on Finale Sessions, and it's the perfect home for his thoughtfully sculpted cuts. There are more outwardly mellow moments such as "Mensura," and the utterly gorgeous "Peace," but there is also plenty of space afforded to the sharper end of his creative transmissions. "Elysium" is a dense, rippling throwdown that touches on many different aspects of contemporary house and techno, while "Rise" offers up a refreshing variation on the acid house template. Once again, Miles Atmospheric demonstrates why he's such a vital, if sometimes overlooked, force in the UK underground.

Review: From his appearances on Aesthetic Audio and Ornate through to his own Atmospheric Existence label, Miles Sagnia continues to be one of the best kept secrets of British deep techno, and that's no more apparent than on this stunning release for Common Dreams. There's a looped up insistence to "Heal", but it's offset by emotive movement in the synth lines and an overall spiritual quality that escapes much cyclical techno. "Plight" takes a slightly slower path, amping up the early UK electronica tones for an immersive experience shaped out by interlocking rhythms and snaking melodies. It's a truly classy statement that stays true to techno while saying something original.

Review: Arthur Miles from Adelaide in Australia is next up on Seb Wildblood's new imprint named All My Thoughts. After a couple of releases for homeboys Untzz Twelve Inch, these four cuts of deep electronica are awesome. You would be forgiven for thinking that the title track is an ambient journey: it's just a long intro that you'd wish went for longer (it's so sublime) but then that deep boogie vibe comes creeping in with some serious cowbell action, '80's synth presets and glimmering arpeggios: it's all quite wonderful in all its neon lit glory. On the flip though, it's certainly all about the ambient house epic "O.O.T. Jam" featuring some celestial pads over its fiercely restrained breakbeat action: prepare to delve deep into the esoteric here!

Review: Detroit deep house legend Alton Miller is back on his own Inner Muse imprint with the Possibilities EP. Originally released in 2007 on R2, the former Music Institute resident served up some deliciously soulful, sexy and emotive groves that you'd come to expect from this master. The broken beat nu-jazz of the title track accompanies Lady Linn's powerfully heartfelt vocals. This re-issue features two remixes; firstly by local John C. Briggs aka Zoetic who takes it down a deeper/chilled early evening fashion while the legendary Boddhi Satva steps up and delivers an epic futurist rendition that has seen this old school stalwart release on Innervisions previously; and it's that aesthetic featured heavily on this killer remix.
