Cat: MERC 023. Rel: 18 Jan 19
  1. Dial Theory (Tony's Slice) (10:03)
  2. Dial Theory (Case Study #9) (new mix) (7:23)
Review: Mark E turns over duties on the latest E-Versions 12" to one of his most celebrated and respected namesakes, Mr Mark Seven! Fans of the Parkway Megamix from Mark Seven should be eminently familiar with "Dial Theory (Tony's Slice)", which is where Mark E first heard it. "A lot of telephone conversations, a lot of pleading, digging, sweat and tears" later and Parkway's Mark revealed to MERC's Mark it was an attempt to recreate a live mix by Tony Humphries he heard on Kiss cutting 2 copies of the phone conversation back and forward forever. All this talking has led to the track featuring here, a serious edit from MKVII indeed! The flipside acid cut, "Case Study 9" is just as potent too!

The Return (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ENLIGHTENMENT 001. Rel: 09 Jul 18
  1. Baku
  2. Return
Review: Moca skirted around the house music underground back at the turn of the century, never quite finding fame but over the years amassing the cult status that comes with highly sought-after records. Now this mysterious producer makes their return with a fresh two-tracker that builds on the legacy of the old records while offering something new. The A side is given over to "Baku," a lean, tracky jam that comes to life with some mellow chords pitched directly at the warm up. On the B side "Return" keeps the same principles of stripped-back beats at the heart of the matter, but makes great use of an arpeggiating synth to sprinkle some colour across the track.

Drome Tapes EP3 (140 gram vinyl 12" + insert)
Cat: TABR 045. Rel: 03 Sep 18
  1. Models Over 18 - "IC"
  2. Paradize - "Violet, Noir, Jaune"
  3. Bitch & Bites - "Techdrea In Andromeda (Time/Space)"
  4. Bouhouz - "Fairy Tale"
Review: Tabernacle have an enviable instinct for visionary talents in the well-ploughed field of purist machine-powered techno and house, and their various artist releases can be a goldmine for new names to add to your watch list. So it goes on this latest transmission, kicking off with the dusty Chicago house styles of Models Over 18 before switching stance drastically to the splayed out tonal investigations of Paradize. Bitch & Bites are equally subversive, shirking dancefloor demands to apply classic techno motifs to a fractured but ultimately inviting strain of hardware-honed techno. That leaves it to Bouhouz to round the EP off with a gentle murmur of synth patterns carefully composed for a spiritual, subliminal end result.

Review: Since launching the Modified Man project in 2016, Adam Scrimshire and Dave Koor have yet to put a foot wrong. The genius of their collaborative releases is their ability to combine loose-limbed instrumental improvisations with dusty samples, cleverly manipulated beats and an acute sense of atmosphere. This third volume in the series rolls along in a similar way, flitting between skewed, straight-to-tape boogie-house ("Blame's On You Bruv"), solo-laden deep house dreaminess ("Glass Army"), intergalactic jazz-funk/broken beat fusion ("Here Me Calling"), smooth and loved-up grooves (the amusingly titled "Sergio Arpeggio") and becalmed, ultra-deep downtempo beats ("Love Rising From The Dark Abyss of Sorrow").

  1. Amalgam (11:28)
  2. Amalgam (Roman Flugel remix) (9:17)
  3. Amalgam (Frank Butters remix) (6:42)
Review: Not An Animal continues to grow into one of the most intriguing labels operating in London on the exotic beatdown axis. Recent releases by In:State & Guili, Ess O Ess and Bogdan have all pushed an agenda of psychedelic, energetic groove business, and now this debut appearance from multi-instrumental trio MODXI builds on this mantra with a sprawling voyage powered by snaking rhythms and seasoned with sax. Then the mighty Roman Flugel gets drafted in for a remix that injects some cosmic synth sweeps into proceedings along with a strong undercurrent of minimalist beat constructions. Frank Butters seals the deal with a distinctive take on the track that draws a darker energy from the source to create a seedy, synthwave interpretation perfect for moodier dancefloors.

  1. Jay Mond - "Green Adventures"
  2. Jenifa Mayanja - "Wide Asleep"
  3. Lilith - "Shadow Boxing"
  4. Dakini9 - "NRG & Power"
Review: Hitting their third release with a fierce selection of fighting tones, the Warrior Sound imprint continues to draw on the immediate circle of artists hovering around the Plan B crew to deliver forward thinking and downright dirty house and techno tackle. Jay Mond leads the way with the abrasive synth tones and brooding atmosphere of "Green Adventures", before Jenifa Mayanja cools the flaring tempers with the swirling, melodic warmth of "Wide Asleep". Lilith turns up the heat with the steamy bass-laden groove of "Shadow Boxing" and label boss Dakini9 has a stubborn thump at work on "NRG & Power" with subtle touches of melody and sampling drifting over the top.

  3. Gettin Hold (6:03)
  4. Fantastisch (5:09)
Review: Hungarian duo Monkz team up with Simba for another fine episode of Gamm, the home of some of the finest deep house around. "Don't Use My Cell" is a soulful little house joint with a sad, bluesy kind of feel, and "Rozencranz" follows suit with another sexy splurge of vocoder voices and sweet-ass melodies. "Getting Hold", on the flip, dusts its fine percussive punch amid utterly hummable vocals and Simba's rapping; "Fantastisch" closes the EP off with another glitchy, finely tuned deep house banger boasting a blazingly off-kilter groove for the heads.

Monsieur Blue 004 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MOBLU 004. Rel: 14 May 18
  1. Track 1
  2. Track 2
  3. Track 3
Review: It's the fourth go round for Monsieur Blue, who steps back up to the plate with another three surefire jams from the slinkier side of the minimal house spectrum. "Track 1" is an exquisite trip through blue-hued keys and shuffling drums, striking a fine balance between the lounge and the dancefloor. "Track 2" takes a moodier approach, eking out mysterious chords and injecting a little juice into the low end to suit a more rugged situation, and then "Track 3" jettisons the ballast and pings off into a dubbed out sphere of house music perfectly crafted for the times you want to get lost at sea.

Monsieur Blue 003 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MOBLU 003. Rel: 29 Jan 18
  1. Track 1 (6:45)
  2. Track 2 (6:14)
  3. Track 3 (7:14)
Review: The mysterious Monsieur Blue returns for a third time to unfurl more of that supremely elegant, dusky deep house alchemy that has made his first two records so desirable. Capturing the woozy mood of the early evening or the late morning, "Track 1" billows out on a bed of mellow pads and an undulating, shuffling beat. "Track 2" does little to shake things up, instead maintaining that beautifully meditative atmosphere and coasting on gentle filter sweeps and sturdy, rolling percussion. "Track 3" injects a little more bite into the beat without sacrificing the gentle lilt of the melodic content, making this three impeccable slices of the deepest minimal house money can buy.

Review: Yes, here we go, another lovely reissue of this utter Mood II Swing classic from the 90's! Last time we saw this it was on a considerably grubbier bootleg and featuring only the two mixes of "Move Me"- which are obviously the bees-knees in house music and probably as pioneering as the Chicago generation before them (that bassline on the original mix is simply irresistible!) - while this time you also get "Call Me" and "Function", two dusty-as-hell floor swipers that'll get anybody swinging from side to side with the right mood...

  1. Turn Your Love Around (5:54)
  2. NY Vibration (5:06)
  3. The Arps (5:23)
  4. Moonlight Drive (5:29)
Review: As spring begins to turn to summer, Distant Hawaii is already in full-on sunshine mode. You'll certainly struggle to find a more cheery, sun-kissed and positive house cut than "Turn Your Love Around", the cut that opens this label debut from recent L.P.C debutant Mood J. Based around samples from the well-known 1980s dancefloor jam (we'll not mention the source), it's as colourful a chunk of boogie-fuelled party house as you're likely to find. The smile-inducing positivity doesn't end there, either: check, for example, the Balearic arpeggio lines and warm dream house vibes of "The Arps", the glistening Balearic house tunefulness of "Moonlight Drive" (all rubbery bass, cascading melody lines and life-affirming chord progressions) and the smoky deep house dustiness of "NY Vibration".

  4. Running Number (Longhair Luv remix) (7:23)
Review: Vienna imprint Luv Shack Records is opening up yet another chapter in 2018 by welcoming Irish DJ afficionado Andrew Johnston AKA Moodtrax (Extended Play/Snuff Cuts). His brand of warm and moody house is a worthy addition to the label. The Perfect Illusion EP opens up with the sexy late night bounce of "Never Can get Away" on the A side, while the flipside features the uplifting and downright electric elation of "Running Number" nailing that classic house sound of old. The Berlin duo Longhair Luv serve up a damn fine remix up next, which takes the track deeper and into the earlier hours of the morning, on this sombre and hypnotic rendition.

  1. Sweet Sweet
  2. Sweet Sweet (Oskar Offermann remix)
  3. The Game
Review: Smallville present a deliciously hypnotic taste of what to expect from the forthcoming Moomin album, further showcasing the Berlin based producer's penchant for deeply driving house sounds. It's pretty difficult not to get swept up by the tender melodic sound at the core of "Sweet Sweet" which swings in and out of focus amidst some subtly effective drum rhythms. Flipside, the track is squeezed into what begins as a minimal shuffle by Oskar Offermann, before gradually unfurling into something jacking and euphoric. "The Game" is a swampy, pensive finale, with woozy deep lying melodies gently cascading around loose limbed syncopation.

Review: Just under a year has passed since France's Groovence took off into the ether with their inaugural "Cosmic Groove" collection. The wait's been worth it, though, as they return with four more space jams of the highest calibre. Moonee & Tour set the scene with a church-bound deep house bubbler while Embezzlement Society follows up with a set of dreamy breaks so breezy you'll feel two stone lighter by the breakdown. Flip for a sweet-shuffled jacking session from Cody Currie before Mangabey brings us back down to earth softly with the hazy chimes and evocative soul of "Dream Up." Bon voyage.

Review:  Leigh Morgan is one of the three points on the Fancy Human power triangle (he's one of three label heads) and also has a strong reputation for delivering deep house on other labels too. Here he whips up three new sizzlers for our listening pleasure - the looped, mid pace back and forth grooves of "Dilly Of A Pickle", the distorted and woozy late 80s ecstasy vibes of "Pie On The Sly" and the malfunctioning stop/start electronics of "Almost Champion". The opener also gets a "Dubfloor remix" by Chocky, who turns in a warm and seductive late night '90s house joint.

Review: Back in 1991, Hisa Ishioka joined forces with New York's King Street Sounds to launch BPM Records, a label largely dedicated to exploring the potential of Japanese deep house. The label's first release was La Ronde, an expansive double-pack containing material from some of the Japanese scene's brightest lights, and a smattering of US producers (most notably Pal Joey, whose dreamy and melodious "Harmony" remains a highlight). Here the package gets a timely reissue, allowing a new generation of house heads to bask in the spine-tingling beauty of killer cuts from Soichi Terada (alongside an impressive cast-list of collaborators), Toshihki Mori (the new Jersey-influenced loveliness of "Cold Sweat") and Men From The East (the brilliant "Midnight Cowboy", which predictably samples John Barry's harmonica-laden theme from the film of the same name).
