  1. Deleted (feat Sara Z)
  2. Always (feat Sara Z)
  3. Fool (feat Angelina Lucero)
  4. True (feat Angelina Lucero)
Review: After a series of self-released tracks and remixes on labels such as Fool's Gold and Guns In The Sun, Jerome LOL jumps over to Friends Of Friends with this stunning four track EP. Expressing his most expansive soundset, each one of these tracks shows a whole new side to him. "Always" sounds like Disclosure performed by a full live band with Sara Z's lyrics hitting spots very few house records ever can. "True", meanwhile, is a cosmic, navel gazing slice of black soul that wouldn't go amiss on a Trentemoller record. Elsewhere we're slapped into slo-mo shuffle submission by "Deleted" and pummelled by industrial strength rhythms on "Fool". An exceptional EP, don't buy this for the LULZ, buy it for the LOL.

  4. Chumps (Sprinkles overdub) (1:00)
Review: Will Long has been missing in action for a little while. Since 2013 to be precise, when he released an EP for basic_sounds. He's back in the game with the onset of a new series for DJ Sprinkles' Comatonse label, a fine doublepack of leftfield house excursions called Purple/Blue. Long's "This Time Has Come" is a classic deep house chugger complete with travelling pads and a dubby bass tone, but Sprinkles' overdub mix is what really brings out the low-ends and - how should we say - ties the room together. "Chumps", on the B-side, is as deep and its predecessor but much more beat-centric in its approach, and the second Sprinkles overdub on this fine EP comes in the form of a gorgeous, aqueous haze of bass, placid tones and a touch of spoken word. If you want deep, then you won't be disappointed.

  4. Control (4:52)
Review: The latest no-nonsense EP on Mistress Recordings comes from rising star Look Like. Over the four tracks, the Drumpoet Community regular quietly joins the dots between analogue deep house, dusty electronic grooves, and the futurist ethos of classic Detroit techno. Opener "Shadow Groove" doffs a sizable cap to late '80s Larry Heard productions, while "You Dub" combines dreamy chord progressions, acid style electronics and crunchy drum machine hits. On the flip you'll find the ultra-deep shuffle, poignant synth-strings and curious vocal samples of "TY84" and the spacey, bleep-inspired techno hustle of EP standout "Control".

Review: Stephen Lopkin's singular doses of electro-tinged house music have pretty much become Glasgow's 'finest''. While everyone else is out snoozing to some deep house and mild-mannered tech, this dude packs a punch each and every time he drops a new release onto our charts. Just in time for the year's end, Lopkin drops Southside Engineering on the sublime Bokhari imprint, and these five metallic dance bombs are enough to make any serious Drexcyia fan think that, yes, there might be a way forwards after all! Full of adrenaline and electrifying swing, you can count on this gear to keep you up and running all night long - even the Ikpathua remix of "Light From Light" has its own particular way of expressing energy and a solid groove. Heavy.

Review: Bobby Pleasure's Needs label continues to gather steam behind a message of togetherness, raising money for worth causes and trying to help those less fortunate in society. On this third instalment Lord Of The Isles leads the way with a typically romantic swoon of analogue bass and gorgeous 80s synth strings, while Mehmet Aslan lays down an earthly prowler powered by organic instrumentation. "Trust The Mountain" introduces Petwo Evans with a daring strain of broken electronica heavy on the crackling signal processing. Bartellow's "1001 (Skrillex Theme)" is a craft machine disco workout, and then Nick Gynn takes things tropical with the exotic tones and bold drum machine hits of "Jumanji".

Review: Last year, we got a bit giddy with excitement over MIC's first two releases, which presented lost music from a 1980s drum machine enthusiast and a swathe of new cuts from Glaswegian cold-wave oddballs LAPS. The label's first missive of 2018 comes from rising star Lord Tusk and is every bit as good as its predecessors. Taken as a whole, it's rather hard to pigeonhole, featuring as it does tracks that variously fuse together sounds variously associated with post-punk dub, weirdo deep house, turn of the '90s London dub house (check the brilliant "Don't Be Shy"), the Art of Noise ("Beyond Limitation") and the dream house/dusty breakbeat fusions we've come to expect from Project Pablo and Jayda G ("Champion Lovers"). Throughout, it remains spaced-out, fuzzy and eccentric.

Review: Thus far Lost City Of Atlantis has been spotted on just one 12", released on Emotions Electric two years ago and supposedly the handiwork of a producer active in the late 80s between New York and Detroit. Whether the providence is correct or not hardly matters, the most important thing is the quality of the tunes, and on this new release for Slow Town there's an abundance of hardware delights to get freaky to. "Secret Code Of 7" is a particularly bugging synth jam, while "Four" piles the swinging funk on heavy. This is certainly rough and ready house music, whenever and wherever it was made.

Review: Although Cliff Lothar's music has been in demand ever since his first EP on Viewlexx back in 2013, the producer hasn't been outing out tonnes of music. Instead, he's opted to stick close to home and has only released on a handful of labels including Skudge White and the present Riverette out of Spain. The Old Jams Die Hard EP is the first volume of a likely series and its classic Lothar, where the grooves of "Tugeda" are tightly packed and hard-hitting. There's also some funkier moments in "Don't Need Nobody, raw and jacking drum machines oddities on "Going Dutch", and a deeper, meaner kinda vibe on "The Snow Is Falling". Killer.

  3. Hidden Track (9:01)
Review: After a smashing debut EP by Joey Anderson back in 2013, the Avenue 66 label returns with a follow-up from Lowtec, Workshop Records frontman and Leipzig's finest alongside Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup. As expected from the man, "Man On Wire" is a mechanical beast, a downtempo jam whose groove is barely held together by mild pads and wavey melodies, while the "reconstruction" version throws in a pseudo four-to-the-floor kick to throw that ambience into shape. On the flip, "Hidden Track" is a shady, percussion-driven house masterpiece filled with the right sort of minimalism and plenty of gorgeous instrumentation. This is Lowtec doing what he does best, don't miss it.

Review: After 19 years in the game, techno veteran Jens "Lowtec" Kuhn is still going strong. While he's recently been in a nostalgic mood - as reissues of early material prove - Kuhn is still capable of producing fresh, high quality material. There's much to enjoy about this first EP for new Malmo label Blundar, from the loud tape hiss, spooky melodies and weirdo ambient dub intent of "Track 2", to the moody, early Autechre throb of Skam-ish closer "Track 4". Dancefloor-minded thrills come in the shape of hypnotic opener "Track 1" - all unsettling, one-note chords, restless rhythms and distant electronics - and the hard-to-pigeonhole madness of the schizophrenic "Track 3".

  4. The Afterworld (DJ Fett Burger Orgonitt Meme deep mix)
Review: After powering up Klasse Recordings in 2010, Luca Lozano put out the one release on Morris Audio, and following a silent 2013, the Berliner is now a hot name thanks to this year's releases on Sex Tags UFO, Optimo Trax and now UTTU. "Mister Right Now" is a dirty, sexed-up club track that will undoubtedly be this record's most played cut, while a MPC slamming "Come With Me" has touches of DJ Sotofett's jungle style to remixing. A trancey-cheesy "The Afterworld (Trance-Gate mix)" is a funky tool for the opening DJ, while DJ Fett Burger's rework to the former is an elegant slice of soulful African percussions and Scandinavian hotness.

Liger EP (12")
Cat: SAFT 06. Rel: 18 Feb 14
  1. Liger
  2. Your Eyes & The Sea
  3. Liger (Gene Hunt 326 US remix)
Review: If it's soaring, soulful analogue house you're after, then look no further than the latest missive from Mathematics devotee Giorgio Luceri. Heading over to the Saft stable for more of that ever-loving Larry Heard style, Luceri is on stellar form as he coos out a message of spirituality and electronic escapism. "Liger" is a slow-release affair that lets the strings creep in gently behind a steady tick of the drum machine and a steadfast bassline, while "Your Eyes & The Sea" heads into a blissful vat of mellow chords and spaced out claps. Gene Hunt isn't afraid to rough things up a little with his remix of "Liger" though, deploying a tougher beat through which he weaves the melodic content of the original.

  3. Kepler 16b (Where Your Shadow Always Has Company)
  4. Tu Sei Il Maestro Dell'Eterno Ritorno
Review: After first teaming up with Uzuri back in 2016, Italian producer Giorgio Luceri finally makes a return with a second part of his Space Fire Truth series. There seems to be a concept lingering in the presentation of the music, but let's focus on the sounds themselves. "Collinder 69 Funk" is an effervescent burst of uplifting energy with a groove that feels housey underneath plush Detroit techno synths. "The Early Morning Ouroboros" switches things up with a pacey, chopped up broken beat trip peppered with soulful vocals and instrumentation. "Kepler 16b" is a moodier affair that lets the techno side of Luceri's sound bleed through, and then "Tu Sei Il Maestro Dell'Eterno Ritorno" finishes the record off on a stirring, romantic tip with swooning strings aplenty.

Review: Italian producer Giorgio Luceri has released a reliable stream of records since 2011, developing relationships with labels like Seven Music and Hieroglyphic Being's Mathematics. For this Blame It EP he points the finger at Spanish label Bucketround and provides a three-track single featuring a remix from Dubbyman. Vocals crossed between Romanthony and George Michael dominate the title-track, while all chords and atmospheres are stripped from the 6D22 Beats version, offering a beefy tool for the adventurous DJ. After two previous releases for the label Dubbyman appears in remix form supplying a sultry remix best listened to in the accompaniment of summer a cool summer breeze.

Review: The output of German producer Lucky Charmz is usually reserved for local imprint Lehult but here the Hamburg/Lisbon/Lund based fellow is back on Moody for the Seaside Greetings EP. Starting out with the dreamy and sampledelic deep house of "Ola Do Mar" or the cheeky disco-funk edit of "Sleepy Hollow" which has a very familiar hook. On the flip "Got Away Clean" goes for some lo-slung/slo-mo house for a change of tempo, as does the aptly titled "Deep Dive" for some truly emotive soulfulness.

  4. Ray Kandinski - "Where U At" (5:22)
Review: Back in the autumn of 2016, Karl Lumont and Ray Kadinski joined forces for a collaborative contribution to the very first Strictly Lo-FI label release. Here they're reunited by The Other Planet label, which has wisely decided to offer them a side of vinyl each to showcase their wares. Lumont handles the A-side, first serving up the gently jaunty melodies, swirling background sounds and fiendishly loose and lo-fi deep house beats of "Cloudy Mountains", before travelling space-wards via the gently intergalactic "Blue Flamingo". Kadinski picks up where his friend left off with "Waste My Time", a hypnotic and starry chunk of heads-down deep house. Arguably even better, though, is lo-fi deep house stomper "Where U At", whose cheap drum machine hits sound both crunchy and wickedly metallic.

Review: The oh-so ironically named Super Tuff are back in business with the first solo artist release on the label, welcoming Local Talk champ and all round wunderkind producer Marcel Lune. The musicality is spilling out of this 12" at every turn, from the Floating Points-esque synth orchestrations of "Moon Sequence" to the motivational rush of piano playing and cosmic FX sweeping on "You Can Do It!". "Unknownz" is a more mystical affair that drafts in seagulls and crashing waves to help spell out another effervescent, bouncy house trip. "Sun" brings some seriously deft drum / handclap programming to the table, but still those ascendant lead lines are the star of the show.
