  1. Bring It Down
  2. Port De La Lune
  3. You Better Give Up (Kosme remix)
  4. You Better Give Up
Review: Laroze is flying the flag for US inspired house music in France, wearing influences from Nu Groove to Mahogani Music on his sleeve and delivering that classic strain of deep house that never dulls with time. "Bring It Down" is a soul-stirring boost of energy fuelled on the hedonism of optimism of vintage 90s house, from the chords to the vocal hook. "Port De La Lune" does a damn fine job of looping up some feel-good disco licks, and "You Better Give Up" shows a different side to Laroze that feels as indebted to R&B and downtempo as house music. Kosme comes on board to do a remix of the track that reframes it as a rolling breakbeat number.

  2. Naakte Groef (5:15)
  3. Amlou (7:15)
  4. She Doesn't (5:32)
Review: Dutch producer Larry De Kat is building up a rather impressive discography. This Pets Recordings debut follows hot on the heels of appearances on Dungeon Meat, Banoffee Pies, Adults Only and Lazare Hoche, amongst others. There's plenty to admire amongst the four tracks, from the post-apocalyptic deep house creepiness of "I Know You Can Hear Me" - all weighty sub-bass, echoing riffs, garage-influenced beats and dusty aural textures - and fluid, tech-tinged deepness of "Amlou", to the shuffling dub-house hustle of "She Doesn't", where ear-catching hand percussion and slowly flowering electronics crowd around a superb, sub-heavy bassline. In other words, it's a rock solid collection of club-ready cuts that ticks a lot of boxes.

  3. Solitary Maybe (dub Treatment) (6:07)
Review: Dutch producer Larry De Kat has been spotted on Lazare Hoche, SlapFunk and Banoffee Pies amongst many others in recent times. Having launched his Katnip label last year he returns with a second release and this time he's brought in some big guns to help him out. "Solitary Maybe" appeared on that last 12", and here it gets high grade reworkings from Frits Wentink and DJ Nature. The former creates a delightful off-kilter groove with wobbly melodic samples aplenty, and then DJ Nature lays down some of his trademark ruffness in a style that couldn't be more authentically funky if it tried. That leaves it to Larry himself to twist out a trippy dub of his original jam to round off the record.

  3. Higher! (Byron The Aquarius remix) (6:13)
  4. Spirit Of Harmony (6:22)
Review: The productions of City Fly co-founder Ashley "Arthur Jr" Stevenson just seem to get better and better. "Higher!" marks his return to the Leicester-based label following outings on Better Listen and Kolour Ltd, and is unquestionably his strongest EP to date. The title track, featuring the sugary-sweet vocals of Erik Rico, is particularly good, boasting a near perfect balance between rolling electronic grooves, dusty samples and luscious soul-jazz instrumentation. There are plenty of highlights elsewhere across the EP, too, from the loopy, sample-house goodness of "Escape Through Time", to the smooth, jazz-flecked deep house breeze that is closer "Spirit of Harmony". Arguably best of all, though, is the deep, jazz-funk flecked revision of "Higher!" by fast-rising star Byron The Aquarius that opens side B of an essential EP.

  1. I Get Deeper (original LNTG mix) (6:46)
  2. I Get Deeper (Cassian rework) (6:16)
Review: Australian techno royalty Carmelo Bianchetti has put out a lot of music under the Late Night Tuff Guy alias with his 2007 tweak of Roland Clark classic "I Get Deep" among his best work. Originally released through the short lived TBot's All Nite House Party label, the track is given a timely reissue through Bianchetti's own Tuff Cut label in newly remastered form. Clark's classic vocal would be arguably be a hit over anything with a 4/4 groove, but there is something satisfying about this grimy arrangement from LNTG. Complementing this is a fresh take on the track from Sydney's Cassian.

  3. Mysterious Shaker (5:28)
  4. Slow-Drifting Years (6:31)
Review: Chicago underground legend Da Rand Land presents his Urban Imagery imprint, now onto its fifth release. This is the reflection of the struggles and emotions of the inner city through music, where Jose Lau delivers his second release entitled Uprooted Soul. Here are four tracks from familiar territory by a producer who originally hails from Nicaragua. Evident in Lau's debut release are the unique melding of traditional deep house elements with unassuming latin/funk style percussion, as heard on the slinky and sultry "Slow-Drifting Years". A constant throughout is his masterful use of Chicago house style basslines ("Keep It Deep") and delicate pad movements alongside minor-key melodic underpinnings, like on "Mysterious Shaker". The outcome is buffered by lo-fi harmonics and dub overtones. This is late night introspective music to its core.

  2. The Garden Of The Hesperides (5:42)

Review: San Laurentino (real name Lorant Talpai) first appeared on London's Electric Minds back in 2010 and has since appeared on top labels such as Mathematics, Let's Play House and Live At Robert Johnson. Like the latter, Smile For A While is a Frankfurt Am Main based imprint devoted to old-school house. That being said, there's a timeless quality to Talpai's new release. From the deeply hypnotic tones of "Paramaribo Calling" (Lounge mix) awash in celestial pads, FM synthesis and those gorgeous kalimba melodies, the new age deep house of "The Garden Of The Hesperides" that's powered by those emtove breakbeats and the original version of "Paramaribo Calling" reminiscent of the legendary Vangelis Katsoulis.

  4. 1929
Review: Following the summer-sizzled "LOVE Song" comes another smooth soul schooling from Victor Lavender. Smoking keys and a lolloping bassline set the scene as Diviniti's vocals cause a spell-binding ear roadblock to great effect. For something deeper and more percussive jump on ReelSoul's drum-heavy instrumental while Josh Milan Honeycomb extends the soul aspects and injects a tiny bit of jazz to recipe giving it a confident MAW-like polish. "1929" completes the set with more jazzed out leanings thanks to the dreamy keys and piano work, tied together neatly with a funky squidgy bassline and subtle percussion elements.

This time, however, the imprint is Local Talk, and they've decided to release the "Tiptoe" single onto glorious 7", a format which is perfect to showcase its slow, meandering waves and delightfully seductive vocals; there's a DJ Spinna remix, on top of Lawrence's magnificent single, with the experienced producer coming through smooth and effective thanks to some elegant beat-work and plenty of soulful vibes. Review: The second release from the Version Galore label, following up an awesome inaugural release by Opolopo. They're are delighted to present you with something special from the heart of Russia - handcrafted re-edits by the Moscow based groove expert Alexander Lay-Far of Basic Fingers, GAMM and BBE fame. The disco fiend turns his deft hand at a tight resplice of a classic by a certain Rhumba band from 2nd Avenue on "I'm An Indian Too" (Lay-Far Refix) and this is raw funk! Next up, ladies & gentlemen (hint hint!) we have the Afrobeat soul explosion of "Like Her" (Lay-Far re-edit). Finally on the flip, Lay Far dives deep on the late night sleaze of "The Right One" (Lay-Far dub Tweak) that features some right pizazz if we do say so ourselves.

Review: It would be fair to say that Stee Downes, a vocalist, beat-maker and producer whose soul-flecked productions have appeared on such labels as Sonar Kollektiv and Lazy Days Recordings, is a perfect foil for talented Russian house head Alexander Lay-Far. In its original form, "Never Good Enough For You" is a jaunty, rolling treat - a hip-hop influenced soulful house throw-down propelled forwards by a deliciously loose, broken house groove. It's accompanied by a tidy instrumental and the bass-heavy house "Remix", which features "straighter" deep house beats and a wicked analogue bassline. The bustling hip-house influences can also be heard on Lay-Far solo cut "Blow My Mind", a throwback to the Halcyon days of rolling West London broken beat that makes use of some killer P-funk synths.

Review: Following fine recent outings on Wolf Music, Le Petit Zoo and D.KO, LB aka Labat serves up more dope freshness on the freshly minted Magic Black imprint. Just like previous releases, the majority of the tracks on Celestial Plan are crafted from a combination of dusty samples, hand-picked loops and tapped-out, MPC style beats. This approach allows Labat to flit between blazed, late night instrumental hip-hop beats ("Nothin' New (Dub)", "Spice Go"), woozy but attractive, off-kilter soundscapes (the impeccable "Sticky Green"), lo-fi, post-house fuzziness (the eccentric but rather good title track) and most positive, dancefloor-focused affairs ("Pack Your Stuff", which contains a suitably positive and glassy-eyed loop lifted from an old Paradise Garage favourite).

Review: It's been a phenomenal year for Lyon-based Baptistin Cablou; fresh from his album Fake Memories and his Magic Black-released "Celestial Plan" comes a fresh EP on his and Pablo Valentino's brand new label Le Petit Zoo. Home to four endangered animals, it's a dedicated exercise in house preservation as each cut shimmers with timelessness; "Something" fumes with smouldering Detroit waves, "Alelah Deepness" shines with a dusty jazz so strong it could easily live at 22a, "Purple Thang" adds a little west coast subtlety to a heavily percussive blend while "Rings" closes the deal with a militant drum arrangement and chilling, mournful chords. It's feeding time.

Review: Light of Other Days is a Zurich based record label. After great releases previously by Miajica, label boss HOVE and ETHIMM, they now present this lush EP by label co-founder Le Frere. Slow Glass is not only the debut release by him, it is also a very personal diary of the last two years of his life. All four tracks are based on recordings, samples and ideas he collected while travelling the world. With this concept in mind, he tried to catch moments of his life without stripping them of their dynamic and evanescence. Retro tinted ambient journey's for fans of labels like Antinote, rich in celestial FM synthesis and saturated VHS quality offered up here for the most part, with the exception of the lively slow burning groove of "Nttt8" which closes out the EP in style.

Review: Hudd Traxx 3rd installment of their 10th Anniversary series comes from Eddie Leader, Hector Moralez, Washerman, Brett Johnson & Rhythm Plate. Label owner Eddie Leader delivers a deep & moody house groover with the slick vocals of long time Hudd Artist Hector Moralez, aptly title 'Way Back'. Washerman picks the pace up with 'Twilite', which is reminiscent of legendary Detroit label Underground Resistance, and adds to the continued diversity of this project. Brett Johnson's 'Mr Smarty Pants' is re-released after gaining plays from the likes of Laurent Garnier and an edit by Dyed Soundorom. Closing out the EP are 2 of the most underrated Producers in the business; Rhythm Plate. 'Keep Moving' was Overshadowed by 'Inside Me' on the 'Robbin Hudd EP' in 2007 but is given it's time to shine on 'Now & Then Part 3' and is a fine addition to the 10 Year celebrations.

Review: The 777 imprint continues to be a trusted source of forward-thinking acid and hardware based manoeuvres, and this four tracker has everything any jaded jacker could desire in the quest for new sounds. Leaves' "Third Floor" is an upfront gem of sizzling drums and chunky square wave bass, and yet the production is finely balanced and delivered with poise, while Pablo likewise keeps a steady hand on the tiller even as "Newkoelln" nudges towards more emotive territory. Brighton takes a less dancefloor focused route into loping electronica with a tasty amount of swing and a rich spread of synths, and then Benedikt Frey finishes the record off with an edit of Potensia's "I Never Really Knew" that heads into ambient breakbeat techno abandon with ease.

Review: Cocktail D'Amore showed the breadth of their tastes when they reissued Ukranian composer Iury Lech's 1990 album Musica Para El Fin De Los Cantos last year. Now the label has commissioned a raft of remixes from some label regulars, with wonderful and diverse results. Powder drops her signature snaking rhythmic trysts over "Barreras", while "Cuando Rocio Dispara Sus Flechas" benefits from an abstract, ambient reworking from Suzanne Kraft. Hatchback takes to "Posmeridiano" with a delicate touch, all lingering 80s synth motifs in a beatless reverie, and Zavoloka lays the cinematic intensity on heavy with the icy strains of "Ukraina".

Review: Some more uncut diamonds by S4AW... Robert Nedelcu aka Lecsicu from rural Romania is only 26 but already a skillful and dedicated producer of oldschool-flavoured House Music with a tek-edge. On top we've got vocals by Berinika van Wyk a singer born in South Africa.

Robert was inspired by guys like Rick Wade, Mr. G, Kerri Chandler, and of course Moodyman. His trademark are strong percussions, little harmonies every now and then and a “tracky” atmo to his tunes that sound very Chicago-ish.

All three original tunes are pure, vintage-style House Music a little on the tech side. So this clearly is an EP for the dancefloor and for early morning sessions when the sun's coming up again...

“Route to 95” received a groundbreaking rework by Detroit House Music veteran Gari Romalis. With incredibly deep subbass sequencies he makes this tune a deep jam like you never heard one before.

Review: If you've ever got a few hours to spare, check out Legowelt's discography - the Dutch analogue fetishist is astonishingly productive (and, of course Legowelt is simply one of Danny Wolfers' many pseudonyms). Here, he adds another label to the growing list with a surprise appearance on Andrew Morgan's Washington D.C-based Peoples Potential Unlimited imprint. Unsurprisingly, Wolfers explores many of his favourite themes on Puzzles in Life, merrily skipping between melodic, bubbling deep house (the excellent title track), slo-mo Detroit futurism ("Video Phone To Space"), super-slo stargazing boogie (the superb "Cruise Till The Sun Shines") and woozy, intergalactic ambience ("Los Alamos Motel"). In many ways, this is an unusual turn from PPU, but it's a calculated gamble that's more than paid off.

From the hypnotic bounce of "TFTC", the tropical polrhythmic bliss of "MITD" or the tunnelling "STTS" calling to mind George Thompson's Karamika project on ESP Institute.

  3. General Purpose - "Concerto De Chasse" (edit) (6:45)
  4. Salvador Ricardo - "Cha Cha Flamongo" (edit) (4:34)
Review: General Purpose boys Len Leise and Salvador Ricardo have decided to launch their own re-edit series. For the first Also Known as Edits 12", Leise has decided to raid his own archive, offering up two tasty reworks first featured on his 2015 LL Edits EP (a 12" that now goes for silly money online). These brilliant reworks - the dreamy Brazilian Balearica of "Stars for Jorge" and equally starry, horizontal jazz-funk flex of "Desperado Dining" - can be found on the A-side, with the flip reserved for previously unheard rubs. There's "Conerto de Chasse", a heavily percussive, deep Afro-house edit from General Purpose that's also blessed with seriously tactile melodies, and Salvador Ricardo's "Cha Cha Flamongo", a Flamenco-goes-cha-cha cut that's as glassy-eyed and positive as it is loved-up and Balearic.

Yesterday For Tomorrow (coloured vinyl 12")
Cat: SLPVNL 006. Rel: 14 Apr 17
  1. Leonid - "Urania 1" (9:31)
  2. Leonid - "Urania 2" (8:54)
  3. Laak - "SP" (6:12)
  4. Laak - "Waiting For Tomorrow" (7:11)
Review: The sixth vinyl missive from Soul Print Recordings is a double-header featuring two tracks apiece from Leonid and Laak. The former handles the A-side, laying down two deliciously intergalactic chunks of spacey deep house. On "Urania 1", he wraps psychedelic acid lines, supernova chords and Motor City melodies around a snappy drum machine groove, before working the acid lines further on the deep and hypnotic "Urania 2". Laak takes over on the flip, peppering a bouncy, off-kilter drum machine groove with cyclical melody loops and undulating acid lines on "Sp". "Waiting For Tomorrow" is arguably even better, with the fast-rising producer wrapping a tactile, synth-bass heavy backing track with fluttering electronics and sunrise melodies.

  1. Interstellar Meditation (11:09)
  2. Asteroid (Jackin Acid dub) (4:49)
  3. Undercurrent (5:12)
  4. Asteroid (9:35)
Review: It's been four years since Leonidas and Kay Suzuki first joined forces on Synqlock Volume One, so this follow-up is long overdue. After setting their stall out via the wonderfully hazy cosmic ambience of "Interstellar Meditation", the duo charges towards the dancefloor via the early Chicago acid revivalism of "Asteroid (Jackin Acid Dub)", before laying down an emotion-rich chunk of loved-up space disco fit for glowing orange sunsets and elongated sunrises (the original version of "Asteroid"). The EP also includes a terrifically warm and spacey remix of wonderful ambient cut "Undercurrent" by rising star Al Kassin. The latter utilizes some sounds more often found in nu-disco workouts, but remains a shimmering deep house treat.
