  1. Frog Acid (6:10)
  2. Washelator (6:00)
  3. It's All Really Happening (feat Clip!) (7:25)
Review: House-centric producer Kresy began his production career with a pair of storming EP's for Hivern Discs, back in 2012, and since then he's popped up on some of the finest club labels going; Freerange and Retrofit being up there in the ranks. This week, he's back on Discomaths with New Experiences On Old Hardware, and EP clearly dedicated to an analogue sound and chunky warehouse beats. "Frog Acid", as the name implies, is a bundle of 303 magic mixed up with metallic percussion and a dusty swing, followed by the hefty 4/4 to-and-fro of the bleepy 'Washelator". Over on the flip, "It's All Really Happening" sees the producer return to more familiar territories thanks to a powerful, warm-as-hell bass swing, and some gorgeous broken chords. Tip!

  3. My Everything (5:15)
  4. Well Done (5:40)
Review: Leicester based Mysterious Works is a new label run by Jonna and Darran P of Midlands deep house institution City Fly Records. For their inaugural release, they present Belgium's Pascal Garnier aka Krewcial, of Blue Note Records and Lumberjacks In Hell fame. Four disco tinged and sample heavy cuts of the deep and dusty variety, offered up here on the Krew Cuts EP. From the sultry, smoky, late night mood-lighting of "Lifting Me Up" with its creamy Rhodes and rather familiar vocals throughout. This is followed by the soulful, lo-slung dopeness of "Stop Loving" that's truly looped-up to perfection. Finally, on the flip we have got a jazzy kinda somethin' in the form of "Well Done" that sees him beat that MPC like a you know what!

  3. Miruga - "White Moon" (7:22)
  4. Seal Bient - "Slavery" (6:43)
Review: Rough House Rosie is back with another selection of sublime tones in the adventurous corner of the deep house playground. The Silent Movie Sounds series never fails to present a fascinating array of producers, and so it is on the fourth volume as Nemanja Krstic seduces with the melodic delights of "Bass Odyssey" and Lady Blaktronika heads into blissed-out territory with the spiritual wonder of "Ringo Oiwaka Heaven". Miruga's "White Moon" is a mysterious, dubbed out affair and Seal Bient heads even further out with the scuffed and muffled flutter of "Slavery". As ever, the vitality of the tracks on this 12" can't be ignored for open-minded diggers looking for original, contemporary deep house.

  2. Just A Little (Twilo mix) (7:36)
  3. Dedication (Sound Factory mix) (5:59)
  4. Dedication (NASA mix) (8:17)
Review: Those who've kept track with Krystal Klear's career will note that the Irish producer regularly pays tribute to historic aspects of dance music culture. Rarely, though, has he made his intentions quite as clear as this. As the name suggests, Club Studies features cuts that wholeheartedly doff a cap towards the records played at legendary New York clubs. On the A-side you'll find two versions of "Just a Little"; a groovy, soulful and sparkling mix inspired by the weekly Sunday Service bashes, and a chunky, hypnotic, percussion-led affair that nails the sound Danny Tenaglia was championing at Twilo in the late 1990s. Turn to the flip for the muscular, Junior Vasquez style dark garage of "Dedication (Sound Factory Mix)" and the riff-heavy Brooklyn techno throb of the "NASA Mix" of the same track.

  2. Division Ave (4:24)
  3. Shockzoid (9:07)
  4. Moonshake Mine (6:04)
Review: In recent times, Krystal Klear's EPs have wholeheartedly paid tribute to a variety of (mostly New York-based) historic clubs, artists and dance music sub-genres. While he's officially broken the spell with The Division EP - his first outing on Running Back - for the most part it's still a heart-warming, retro-futurist treat. He kicks things off with the cheery, Italo-disco revivalism of "Neutron Dance", where throbbing synthesizer arpeggio lines and mid-80s melodies are underpinned by a bustling mid-tempo house groove, before slowing things down via the Balearic synth-pop shuffle of "Division Ave". Turn to the flipside and you'll find more muscular, freestyle-meets-acid house fun (wild and mind-altering peak-time highlight "Shockzoid") as well as the baggy, glassy-eyed Balearic house rush of closer "Moonshake Mike".

Cat: MULEMUSIQ 224. Rel: 11 Apr 18
  1. Once Again (feat Henrik Schwarz - album version) (7:51)
  2. River (11:22)
Review: 2009 saw the release of Japanese producer Kuniyuki's third album Walking In The Naked City. Both he and legendary jazz pianist Fumio Itabashi invited the Innervisions affilated hi-tech soul wizard Henrik Schwarz as vocalist. Itabashi said River is one of the best songs he has produced. Finally available on vinyl is "Once Again" (feat Henrik Schwarz - album version) a jazzy, soulful jam on the hi-tech tip as you'd expect from the trio - pure magic. On the flip, the epic free jazz journey "River" goes for eleven minutes and is a right frenzy, where Itabashi's tremendous skills on the piano take on almost spiritual dimensions over Kuniyuki's evocative and powerful arrangements beneath. Pure class!

  3. Jenifa Mayanja - "Night Walker" (6:57)
  4. Dakini9 - "Limbic Resonance" (6:15)
Review: The Sound Warrior label focusses on releasing music by female house and techno producers, an extended collection of women who share a similar vision of dance music. The label is run by Jenifa Mayanja and Dakini 9 - the latter being part of NY's Plan B imprint alongside DJ Spider - and the girls are back with two new faces for the label's fourth outing. Daniela La Luz's "Milkus" is a mid-tempo chugger with evil percussion and a funky chord hook, while "The Only" by Whim EE is darker, more deranged and of a lo-fi nature. On the flip, Mayanja's "Night Walker" is a tribal affair with a deep, growling bassline and "Limbic Resonance" by Dakini 9 is the hardest cut of them all, the certified techno head-nodder among the deeper tracks. Tough.

Review: Jenifa Mayanja and Dakini 9's Sound Warrior label continues to fly the flag for female house producers, this time inviting North Carolina DJ Lady Fingers to make an appearance with the smoky throwdown of "Depth". Mayanja herself then steps up with the ethereal, broken beat tones of "Get Off My Back," Berlin-based Ena Lind takes things in a dramatic, evocative direction on "High & Over" before Lady Blacktronika delivers her inimitable style of shimmering house music with the hi-hat shaking "Chance Of Love." Executed with warmth and intrigue, the Warrior Formulation 12" is another direct hit for Sound Warrior - as if we expected anything less.

Tangier (12")
Cat: ESP 079. Rel: 22 Jun 18
  1. Tangier (13:04)
  2. Everything Is Nice (6:30)
Review: To date, long serving but low key Detroiter Sharif Laffrey has specialised in delivering epic cuts that prioritize hypnotic grooves, raw drums and subtle musical shifts. For his debut on Lovefingers' ESP Institute label he ratchets up the intensity by a few dozen notches, basing fearsome A-side "Tangier" around a druggy, full-throttle groove, wild and psychedelic acid lines, snaking Middle Eastern horn solos and the kind of rumbling bassline that will sound awesome blasting out of a meaty soundsystem. B-side "Everything Is Nice" is deeper and groovier in tone, with Laffrey wrapping bleeping melody lines and echoing vocal samples around a crunchy drum machine rhythm. It's very good, even if it does lack the restless energy of the exotic A-side.

Review: With previous releases on top labels such as Roots For Bloom and Rutilance Recordings, Brittany based duo Gojah & Kasmin aka Mara Lakour deliver another dose of sexy late night deepness here for Nrmndy - which follows up an excellent inaugural release by Ka One & St-sene. "Inhale" kicks off the EP in fine fashion on this emotive, swing-fuelled groove for the early hours, while the trippy bump and shuffle of "Solar" follows in suit - and it receives a tremendous rework on the flip. Havantepe's remix sees the rising Turkish producer deliver a evocative excursion through analogue soul in the vein of Cab Drivers or DJ Honesty, while the sleazy bounce of "Mirrors" will hypnotise you into submission with its swirling pads, sexy vocals and firm rhythms.

  1. Bring It Down
  2. Port De La Lune
  3. You Better Give Up (Kosme remix)
  4. You Better Give Up
Review: Laroze is flying the flag for US inspired house music in France, wearing influences from Nu Groove to Mahogani Music on his sleeve and delivering that classic strain of deep house that never dulls with time. "Bring It Down" is a soul-stirring boost of energy fuelled on the hedonism of optimism of vintage 90s house, from the chords to the vocal hook. "Port De La Lune" does a damn fine job of looping up some feel-good disco licks, and "You Better Give Up" shows a different side to Laroze that feels as indebted to R&B and downtempo as house music. Kosme comes on board to do a remix of the track that reframes it as a rolling breakbeat number.

Review: Rolling up sock donuts since 2013, the evergreen D.ko imprint serves up a feast once more with this delicious all-French V/A 12. Laroze makes his D.ko debut with a sprightly disco gem before Monomite adds a dash of sleazy boogie funk before Mezique takes us right back to the peak of Paris's discotheque scene with infectious robo-funking insistency. Finally label familiar and Rag Dabons cohort Sandro closes with a dewy eyed slice of emotional acid. Au revior.

  3. Solitary Maybe (dub Treatment) (6:07)
Review: Dutch producer Larry De Kat has been spotted on Lazare Hoche, SlapFunk and Banoffee Pies amongst many others in recent times. Having launched his Katnip label last year he returns with a second release and this time he's brought in some big guns to help him out. "Solitary Maybe" appeared on that last 12", and here it gets high grade reworkings from Frits Wentink and DJ Nature. The former creates a delightful off-kilter groove with wobbly melodic samples aplenty, and then DJ Nature lays down some of his trademark ruffness in a style that couldn't be more authentically funky if it tried. That leaves it to Larry himself to twist out a trippy dub of his original jam to round off the record.

This new release finds him purring his way through downtempo, soul-inflected selections that open out a whole new dimension to this talented, versatile producer. Juno's vocals are the icing on a particularly funky cake on "Do For Love", while "So Damn Fine" is an instrumental beat worthy of D'Angelo (sadly not included). The jazzy licks pour out of this release like honey - Larry De Kat just upped his game yet again and we strongly advise you to take heed.

Review: Australian techno royalty Carmelo Bianchetti has put out a lot of music under the Late Night Tuff Guy alias with his 2007 tweak of Roland Clark classic "I Get Deep" among his best work. Originally released through the short lived TBot's All Nite House Party label, the track is given a timely reissue through Bianchetti's own Tuff Cut label in newly remastered form. Clark's classic vocal would be arguably be a hit over anything with a 4/4 groove, but there is something satisfying about this grimy arrangement from LNTG. Complementing this is a fresh take on the track from Sydney's Cassian.

Review: San Laurentino (real name Lorant Talpai) first appeared on London's Electric Minds back in 2010 and has since appeared on top labels such as Mathematics, Let's Play House and Live At Robert Johnson. Like the latter, Smile For A While is a Frankfurt Am Main based imprint devoted to old-school house. That being said, there's a timeless quality to Talpai's new release. From the deeply hypnotic tones of "Paramaribo Calling" (Lounge mix) awash in celestial pads, FM synthesis and those gorgeous kalimba melodies, the new age deep house of "The Garden Of The Hesperides" that's powered by those emtove breakbeats and the original version of "Paramaribo Calling" reminiscent of the legendary Vangelis Katsoulis.

As always with Lavander, soul is the main focus and there's a strong sense of sprightly summertime jazz fusion at play, too... "Consequencies" is a lilting dreamer with a playful Balearic shuffle, "Tiano Nuevo" gentle ebbs and flows between the planets on a weave of glistening strings and wispy pads while "Now We're Cooking" turns up the Rio heat over the course of nine minutes with steamy twists at every turn.
