Thugs EP (limited 12")
Cat: 777 02. Rel: 24 May 17
  1. Leaves - "Third Floor" (6:47)
  2. Pablo - "Newkoelln" (6:44)
  3. Brighton - "She Wanted Some Music" (9:59)
  4. Potensia - "I Never Really Knew" (Benedikt Frey edit) (4:24)
Review: The 777 imprint continues to be a trusted source of forward-thinking acid and hardware based manoeuvres, and this four tracker has everything any jaded jacker could desire in the quest for new sounds. Leaves' "Third Floor" is an upfront gem of sizzling drums and chunky square wave bass, and yet the production is finely balanced and delivered with poise, while Pablo likewise keeps a steady hand on the tiller even as "Newkoelln" nudges towards more emotive territory. Brighton takes a less dancefloor focused route into loping electronica with a tasty amount of swing and a rich spread of synths, and then Benedikt Frey finishes the record off with an edit of Potensia's "I Never Really Knew" that heads into ambient breakbeat techno abandon with ease.

  1. Barreras (Powder remix)
  2. Cuando Rocio Dispara Sus Flechas (Suzanne Kraft remix)
  3. Posmeridiano (Hatchback remix)
  4. Ukraina (Zavoloka remix)
Review: Cocktail D'Amore showed the breadth of their tastes when they reissued Ukranian composer Iury Lech's 1990 album Musica Para El Fin De Los Cantos last year. Now the label has commissioned a raft of remixes from some label regulars, with wonderful and diverse results. Powder drops her signature snaking rhythmic trysts over "Barreras", while "Cuando Rocio Dispara Sus Flechas" benefits from an abstract, ambient reworking from Suzanne Kraft. Hatchback takes to "Posmeridiano" with a delicate touch, all lingering 80s synth motifs in a beatless reverie, and Zavoloka lays the cinematic intensity on heavy with the icy strains of "Ukraina".

Review: Shawtyshank returns under his Lee Pearson Jr Collective with two collaborative slabs of evangelistic soulful house. First up is "What Do You Prefer" with New Black Renaissance man Vernard Burton. Staccato lines over a horn-parping jack, both versions provide inner fulfilment. Flip for a hook-up with RC Groove affiliate K LaDawn for a softer shuffle where smoky sultries play a seductive lead role. Stunning.

  1. Puzzles In Life
  2. Videophone To Space
  3. Cruise Till The Sun Shines
  4. Los Alamos Motel
Review: If you've ever got a few hours to spare, check out Legowelt's discography - the Dutch analogue fetishist is astonishingly productive (and, of course Legowelt is simply one of Danny Wolfers' many pseudonyms). Here, he adds another label to the growing list with a surprise appearance on Andrew Morgan's Washington D.C-based Peoples Potential Unlimited imprint. Unsurprisingly, Wolfers explores many of his favourite themes on Puzzles in Life, merrily skipping between melodic, bubbling deep house (the excellent title track), slo-mo Detroit futurism ("Video Phone To Space"), super-slo stargazing boogie (the superb "Cruise Till The Sun Shines") and woozy, intergalactic ambience ("Los Alamos Motel"). In many ways, this is an unusual turn from PPU, but it's a calculated gamble that's more than paid off.

Review: Icelandic producer Felix Leifur made a big impression with his first EP for Dirt Crew, last year's The Sunday Club. This action-packed follow-up is, if anything, even more impressive. Over the course of six dusty, head-in-the-clouds cuts, you'll find skewed, effects-laden drums (think Theo Parrish crossed with Chaos In The CBD), alien chords, punchy jazz samples, J Dilla influences, sweaty percussive build-ups, fluid jazz-funk instrumentation, twisted R&B vocal cut-ups, and a serious amount of tape hiss. The result is a collection of tracks that shimmies between loose and groovy deep house, instrumental hip-hop goodness, and club-ready jazz-house heaviness. In other words, it's pretty darn tasty.

Review: More balearic goodness from Melbourne's Len Leise on his General Purpose imprint. The International Feel affiliated producer delivers sun-kissed island dream aesthetics, by way of celestial FM synth tones and neon-lit analogue synths on these three wonderful offerings. From the hypnotic bounce of "TFTC", the tropical polrhythmic bliss of "MITD" or the tunnelling "STTS" calling to mind George Thompson's Karamika project on ESP Institute.

  3. General Purpose - "Concerto De Chasse" (edit) (6:45)
  4. Salvador Ricardo - "Cha Cha Flamongo" (edit) (4:34)
Review: General Purpose boys Len Leise and Salvador Ricardo have decided to launch their own re-edit series. For the first Also Known as Edits 12", Leise has decided to raid his own archive, offering up two tasty reworks first featured on his 2015 LL Edits EP (a 12" that now goes for silly money online). These brilliant reworks - the dreamy Brazilian Balearica of "Stars for Jorge" and equally starry, horizontal jazz-funk flex of "Desperado Dining" - can be found on the A-side, with the flip reserved for previously unheard rubs. There's "Conerto de Chasse", a heavily percussive, deep Afro-house edit from General Purpose that's also blessed with seriously tactile melodies, and Salvador Ricardo's "Cha Cha Flamongo", a Flamenco-goes-cha-cha cut that's as glassy-eyed and positive as it is loved-up and Balearic.

  1. Leonid - "Urania 1" (9:31)
  2. Leonid - "Urania 2" (8:54)
  3. Laak - "SP" (6:12)
  4. Laak - "Waiting For Tomorrow" (7:11)
Review: The sixth vinyl missive from Soul Print Recordings is a double-header featuring two tracks apiece from Leonid and Laak. The former handles the A-side, laying down two deliciously intergalactic chunks of spacey deep house. On "Urania 1", he wraps psychedelic acid lines, supernova chords and Motor City melodies around a snappy drum machine groove, before working the acid lines further on the deep and hypnotic "Urania 2". Laak takes over on the flip, peppering a bouncy, off-kilter drum machine groove with cyclical melody loops and undulating acid lines on "Sp". "Waiting For Tomorrow" is arguably even better, with the fast-rising producer wrapping a tactile, synth-bass heavy backing track with fluttering electronics and sunrise melodies.

  4. Asteroid (9:35)
Review: It's been four years since Leonidas and Kay Suzuki first joined forces on Synqlock Volume One, so this follow-up is long overdue. After setting their stall out via the wonderfully hazy cosmic ambience of "Interstellar Meditation", the duo charges towards the dancefloor via the early Chicago acid revivalism of "Asteroid (Jackin Acid Dub)", before laying down an emotion-rich chunk of loved-up space disco fit for glowing orange sunsets and elongated sunrises (the original version of "Asteroid"). The EP also includes a terrifically warm and spacey remix of wonderful ambient cut "Undercurrent" by rising star Al Kassin. The latter utilizes some sounds more often found in nu-disco workouts, but remains a shimmering deep house treat.

Review: When he's not busy in the studio or touring the world with his running mate Hans (Junktion) as Fouk, Daniel Leseman takes time for his own solo projects and Detroit/Houston's Kolour are pleased to release two vintage Daniel Leseman groovers on a piece of 10" vinyl for the seventh stop in their Kolour LTD series. On the A side "Honey Rider" sees the Dutch producer serve up a deep and slinky house cut, on the soulful and filtered tip. Some sexy synth work and boogie down vibes in full effect here. On the flip, we have got the low slung/slo-mo house of "Mr Scaramanga" which really brings the P-funk style to the max, accompanied by some dusty disco drums and spacey vibes for sexy times on the dancefloor.

Review: Emergent chameleons Letherette are making quite a splash following their initial appearances on Ho Tep and Brownswood, and they deliver their first EP for Ninja Tune with an assured tone to their hybrid sound. At times sounding positively housey and at others locked into a fractured kind of groove, the overwhelming feeling is one of savvy pop music that reaches for all the right kind of signifiers to hold weight with the underground without fearing to embrace song structures and brief moments of anthemic bombast. There is a largely downtempo feel to Featurette even when the tracks are a touch more lively, but it binds the EP together smartly to offer a cohesive group that appeal on many different levels.

  1. Feel The Rhythm
  2. Come On
  3. Music
Review: Plastik People is, as ever, your most trusted source of funking, bumping garage house. This time they've unearthed a real treat in the shape of Danny J Lewis, a secret weapon of the UK garage scene who flirted with success in the mid to late 90s, reaching the heights of Locked On and XL. Reportedly the tracks on this 12" were originally released on a supremely rare double pack, and now they've been mastered and repressed for die hard heads to sink their teeth into. "Feel The Rhythm" has a dash of darkside rave drama tipped into its sauce, but it's still an utterly funky swinger with all the hallmarks of the 90s. "Come On" is a boisterous party starter, and "Music" takes things in more of a deep house direction.

  3. Behind Closed Doors (Afro main mix)
Review: Demarkus Lewis is a relentless ambassador for the true soulful roots of house music, boasting a two decades deep discography that would make a completist shudder. Here he is on a label that fits him perfectly - D3 Elements. On "Without Pause" he lays out a sturdy bedrock of bubbling synth bass and rich, interwoven layers of keys and chords that charge forth with urgency, while "Lady In Pink" shows his more immersive side with intricate rhythmic trysts and jazzed out keys that would sound at home in an Osunlade set. "Behind Closed Doors (Afro Main Mix)" has pride of place across the whole B side, making the most of the space to build up a subtly broken beatdown with an infectious vocal turn from the man himself.

  1. Jamie Lidell - "When I Come Back Round" (live version - Matthew Herbert long Night dub) (7:42)
  2. Matthew Herbert - "Megaphone" (7:20)
Review: The ACJ94 EP comes courtesy of Accidental Jnr, a new sub-label of Matthew Herbert's Accidental. Here he presents a remix of Jamie Lidell's "When I Come Back Round" from 2005's Multiply. Entitled "Live version - Matthew Herbert long Night dub" it's a much more raw and funky take on the track with tough drums and emotive elements where the source material is, like its name suggests, from an appearance on an L.A. radio station from some years ago. On the B side, we have the man himself Herbert with a new track entitled "Megaphone" a classic and proper deep house jam for the late night that's expertly crafted by the artist who has brought us such timeless classics like "See You On Monday" amongst many others.

Review: Japan's TH Pressing imprint is hardly prolific, releasing just two 12" singles in its first three years of operation. That said, it rarely fails to impress, with last year's Wishes & Memories Volume 1 being particularly potent. Like its predecessor, this follow-up gathers together tracks from a quartet of producers. Life Recorder begins with the breezy and melodious, Soichi Terada style deep house bliss of "While She Dreams", before Ernie drops some quirky, dubbed-out dancefloor deepness in the shape of "Dynamic Workflow". Over on the flipside, Brad P explores deep space via the Motor City electronics, hypnotic rhythms and acid bass of "Grey Blue Passion", while Takuya Yamashita goes all Global Communication on the sparkling, early '90s ambient business of "Somewhere".

  1. Ignorance Is Bliss (Healing Force Project remix) (8:10)
  2. Love Lost (Musephased by Area) (13:06)
Review: When commissioning remixes, the best labels think outside the box. That's exactly what Firecracker's Lindsay Todd did when seeking out producers to rework tracks from Linkwood's excellent Expressions album. On this second 12" in an ongoing series, that faith has paid dividends. Whereas the original version of "Ignorance Is Bliss" was a warm, woozy, sun-kissed deep house affair, Healing Force Project has reinvented it as a stargazing chunk of 21st century space jazz, complete with twinkling chords, low-slung double bass and reverb-laden drum solos. The Musephased interpretation of "Love Lost" by Area sticks closer to the ultra-deep, melancholic vibe of Linkwood's original, but adds a frisson of excitement via bubbling, Detroit-influenced electronics and hypnotic rhythms.

Review: Next up with his take on the electro sound is Firecracker Recordings co-head Linkwood, who looks to Motor City greats like Drexciya and Japanese Telecom on the aquatic future-funk of "Fresh Gildans" which is quite majestic in all its soulful and bass driven feel. On the flip are two deeper and more introspective cuts, with the immersive "Solar Panel" going for a hypnotic ambient house vibe, or the sublime deep techno journey "Another Late Night" taking its cues respectfully from Detroit like on the previous side. Another great EP by this stalwart of the Scottish scene, which the label best describe themselves as designed for the dancefloor, the sofa and all points in between.

More classic house reminiscent of the U.K.'s second summer of love is catered for on the flip with "What Is It?" with its big time piano chord progression, jacking vocals and cracking old school rhythms that are gonna make you want to celebrate like it's '88 all over again.
