  1. Where My Roots Lie (New Detroit Anthem) (9:57)
  2. White Churches Be Like (6:11)
  3. Solace (4:10)
Review: Omar S' FXHE stable has become synonymous with trend-setting house and techno over the last ten years. Moreover, each time Alex O Smith brings about a new name to the FXHE dynasty it's always exciting news - last time around OB Ignitt was introduced to us in fine style through his Star Wars-themed brand of raw-schooled house. John FM's "Where My Roots Lie" is similarly spacey and freaked out, synth-heavy and filled to the brim with intricate Roland percussion. On the B-side, "White Churches Be Like" is the ticket, where a broken beat arrangement is diced and shredded by ice-cold snares; but "Solace" is the unexpected track on here, a slow and funked-out r&b monster in true FXHE style. Another solid missile.

John FM EP (12")
Cat: JFM# 2. Rel: 13 Oct 15
  1. Jehx (7:36)
  2. Motion (3:59)
  3. Alone (Omar S mix) (4:22)
  4. Gump (7:17)
Review: Omar S' Detroit proud FXHE now has a staunch reputation as one of those buy on sight labels for a reason. This new release by rising star John FM follows up the well-received Alone and Where My Roots Lie EPs. Starting with the soulful machine funk of "Jehks" truly capturing the sounds of the city of industry in its heyday. There's then the fine R&B jam of "Motion" somewhat reminiscent of Theo Parrish & Andrew Ashong, but it's his smooth vocal delivery which undoubtedly makes it his own! On the flip, the mysterious and melancholic Omar-S remix of "Alone" is absolutely sublime, but just wait for the tough acid fuelled groove of "Gump" which truly takes it home in right fashion.

Ricochet (12")
Cat: TTT 062. Rel: 28 Nov 17
  1. Ricochet (10:22)
  2. ...And Then Leave (Brian Kage mix) (7:47)
Review: Here is the long awaited third release from John FM. He is a 24 year old rising star from Detroit who follows up two well received EP's on Omar S' esteemed FXHE records - with yet more dusty machine funk for The Trilogy Tapes. He's found a fitting home on TTT, you can really hear it on the A side epic "Ricochet" as it pumps away beneath the lo-fi tape saturation, all hypnotic arpeggios and rusty drum patterns galore. On the flip, it's a classic Motor City affair from the first wave on the rather Derrick May sounding "..And Then Leave" which is in fact remixed by local legend Brian Kage of Michigander and Reference fame. It's a great one packed full of emotive church organs, razor sharp synth melodies and evocative pads. Follows up a great release on the label in the from of Omar S' collaboration with Los Angeles based songstress Nite Jewel on the wonderful "Confess To U".

Review: For reliable, jacking, and horny drum tracks, Paul Johnson's debut on the prolific Chiwax is probably the best thing since DJ Slugo's recently repressed Livin' That Ghetto Life 12". At six tracks large - three on each side - this record is a weapon for the DJ and stand out vocal cuts include "Aww Shit" and Who's Psy Is This", while for instrumental melt downs check out "Speech Impediment" and the almost Yello sounding "Relieve Me".

  3. Positive Pressure (feat Kevin Knapp) (6:12)
  4. Parallel Universe (6:32)
Review: Hot Creations boss Jamie Jones manages to find time for another release, in between his Ibiza residency and travelling the globe as one of modern house music's most popular DJs. His latest offering brings everything you'd expect from the Welshman and nothing less. These four Summery and pop-inflected tech house cuts are hot material on their own and make a cohesive EP. Starting off with the anthemic "Sound Of Music" covering jungle legend Nookie's track of the same name and with pop sensation Katy B on vocals. The rolling peak time groove "Kooky Chords" is absolutely the sound of not only 'The Island' but Jones' label and will bang the party just as much as recent offerings by wAFF or Phil Kieran. On the flip, there's a bouncy and sleazy early evening jam in the form of "Positive Pressure" featuring American Kevin Knapp and the druggy/minimal afterhours DJ tool "Parallel Universe".

Cat: PALAY 02. Rel: 11 Nov 13
  1. A Month Of Rain
  2. Made Visible
Review: Returning to the fray for the second installment in its deep house venture, the People Are Looking At You imprint sees a confident expansion on the sultry tones laid out on the first slab of wax, featuring a sturdy pair of cuts from London production duo Jonno & Tommo. Taking charge with the A side, "A Month Of Rain" is a multi-faceted mover loaded with suspense and surprise. In its opening strains the sharp beat ticks out across a sparse, dub-informed soundscape that slowly fills out via a captivating chord refrain, haunting and seductive in equal measure. Without giving too much away ahead of experiencing the track for yourself, be prepared for a dazzling break in the clouds that lifts the summit of the track into an entirely different headspace. On a different kind of house agenda, "Made Visible" creeps into action on a slow and slamming bed of rough drums and immersive bass notes, subtle flashes of percussion creating kinks in the groove and the choice vocal samples injecting warmth and soul into the otherworldly atmosphere. When the climactic chords come in to signal the second half of the track, it brings the ranging elements to the surface for a truly soul-cleansing experience.
Proving that house tracks need not stagnate in the same mood from start to finish, PALAY02 is a strong next step for a label committed to bringing something new to the table.

Finale Sessions Unreleased Vol 1 (140 gram vinyl 12")

  2. Michael Zucker - "Just Believe" (6:43)
  3. Michael Zucker - "Narrow Is The Gate" (6:39)
  4. Jonno & Tommo - "Shark City" (6:59)
Review: Michael Zucker continues to steer the good ship Finale Sessions with a steady hand on the deep house tiller, and this time he's enlisted Ornate regulars Jonno & Tommo as trusty deck hands. Their track "Dirty Nylons" opens the record up in a woozy haze of twinkling piano and dreamy chords slipping in and out of earshot. Zucker follows this up with the moody tones of "Just Believe", before leaping over to the B side to roll out the broken beats and heavy reverb of "Narrow Is The Gate". Jonno & Tommo then round the record off with the sensual rub down of "Shark City", pitting pattering percussion against snappy chords and a steamy vocal lick for saucier moments in the club.

Review: Ten releases it is now for Batti Batti Records and to mark this milestone we are delighted to present the second in our Atmospheres series. Featuring once again artists old and new to the label, the EP very much takes its cue from the spirit of the first Atmospheres release.
A
Young Berlin-based Italian producer Saverio Celestri, who shined on BBR05, the Crossover EP, sets the tone beautifully with the haunting and emotionally-charged Detroit Feeling. Having previously collaborated with Fred P for Deep Explorer, Brooklyn-based artist Jordan (Finale Sessions/Ornate) debuts alone here for us with the wonderfully dark, twitchy and yet persistently funky, Device.
A
Another Batti Batti newcomer, the vastly-experienced Dan Mela, rounds off proceedings with the stunning 10-minute tour de force that is Tenuta Ken (featuring acclaimed Italian jazz pianist Stefano Calzolari), which showcases to perfection the producer's passion for soul, funk and jazz.

  2. Kazumi Cycle (7:48)
  3. Contagion (5:30)
Review: So far, the best part of Jouem's career seems to have been shaped by the Mojuba imprint, a label that rarely ever puts in something below excellent, and one whose label heads curate diligently. The shady artist returns with the fifth instalment of the series, and "Anomalous Diffusion" kicks it off with a deep, meandering pulse that showcases the best of what dubby house has to offer; on the flip, "Kazumi Cycle" strips the whole amalgam down to a mystical and pensive whirlpool of fuzzy bass waves and slow drum machine beats that are wrapped in a misty fog of sonics. "Contagion" is our favourite piece, its subtle addition of semi breaks at the core give it something special, and place it a step above any other recent house turn we've heard. This is some deep gear - we can't wait for the sixth chapter!

  1. JT Donaldson - "Got Myself Together"
  2. Maximiljan - "Son Of A"
  3. Professional Gigolo - "Professional Gigolo"
  4. Tuneon - "Hangin On"
Review: Proud Yorkshire label Hudd Traxx have been putting out a reliable stream of quality deep house since 2005, with artists like DJ Sneak, Rick Wade, Iron Curtis, Jay Bliss and Agnes just some of the many names to appear on the label. This 46th release features three debutants, while the fourth name, J.T. Donaldson, spearheads the release with a wishy-washy, bassline driven deep house vocal cut "Got Myself Together". Hudd Traxx provides Dusseldorf producer Maximiljan with his first physical release with the track "Son Of A" which merges the linear 909 house style of Norm Talley with smooth chords and cheeky vocals similar to the now defunct Swiss house duo Azuni. But most interesting for the label on this release, it's the two new names in Professional Gigolo and Tuneon that prove Hudd Traxx still know where to look when it comes to unearthing new and vibrant talent.

Ophelia EP (12")
Cat: EVR 007. Rel: 13 Sep 12
  1. Vandaleur
  2. Forgotten Hauler
  3. Ophelia
Review: Starting to make diversions from his beloved $tinkworx moniker, JT Stewart makes his second outing under his own name for Greece's Echovolt label, dealing in sumptuous analogue synthesis in a strange vein somewhere between house and techno, although certainly not tech house. It's richly melodic stuff, but also detuned just enough to add some excitement and mystery to the mix. "Vandaleur" struts along with a sci-fi-horror tone, while "Forgotten Hauler" gets a bit rougher in the percussion department while the synths pound out a Detroit manifesto. "Ophelia" on the B-Side takes a more relaxed affair as the groove skips playfully and light piano and string pads define the atmosphere.

Review: Interestingly, Steven "Funkineven" Julien's follow-up to 2016 debut album Fallen had two major inspirations: the musical influences offered by his extended family (hence the title, Bloodline) and the Roland TR-808 drum machine (when he started the recording process, Julien decided to pay tribute to the iconic engineer who created it, Ikutaro Kakehashi, who passed away this time last year). While the latter influence is evident throughout - particularly on the A-side's suite of heavyweight, off-kilter jack-tracks and sweaty, alien techno workouts - it's harder to know where Julien's relatives fit in. Certainly, there's woozy warmth to be found on the B-side's more open and melodious cuts, which variously touch on new-age synth-pop, vintage analogue deep house and the producer's beloved '80s soul sounds, while retaining his trademark jammed-out looseness.

Review: Remixers must jump at the chance to work with a Junior Boys vocal and this time around it's Carl Craig who has caught the bouquet. CC works the "Like A Child" vocal to perfection, pitching it alongside harmonious synths, a body moving bass line and subtle percussion. Mike Simonetti hits up some indie dance vibes in his remix to Blood Orange's "Champagne Coast" as a walking bass line embraces washed-out vocals and shimmering synths.

Review: It's been a hot minute since Timothy J. Fairplay slipped on his Junior Fairplay guise, but he's done just that for this bleep-tastic new 12" on (Emotional) Especial. "End Of Love" is unabashed in its embrace of early Yorkshire techno tones, making a fine job of resurrecting the bleep spectre and letting it shake up the dance once more. Roy Of The Ravers is a smart choice of remixer, and he brings an off-kilter acid rub to the table in his idiosyncratic, braindance-inflected style. The B-side is equal laden with purposefully dusty dance grooves transplanted from the late 80s / early 90s, with "Faxes From The Future" hitting a particularly sharp point in its lazy breakbeat roll and the clanging harmonies of the stabs.

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Juniper, the Manchester-based duo who showed much promise with early outings on Underground Quality and the like. Having previously popped up on a various artists 12", they return to the ever-essential meandyou with a strong statement of intent, packing five tracks into an EP that presents their subversive style immaculately. "Indigo Children" is a head-turning cut that fuses uptempo Motor City style electro and techno with industrial tones, while "Life Source Negative" switches stance for a beautiful, craftily constructed drift into woozy deep house. Every track is noteworthy on this release, balancing immediacy and warmth against experimental textures in a way that sits very comfortably on meandyou.

Review: Hans Peeman seems to be using the alternative New Franklin Theory alias to deliver music that combines dusty, dreamy deep house tropes with tons of original boogie and electrofunk instrumentation. As this second New Franklin Theory 12" proves, it's a winning formula. The majority of the five tracks are propelled forwards by deep house beats and squelchy synth basslines, with Peeman altering the levels of disco and boogie instrumentation atop. For starters, check the bustling beats, rubbery synth-bass, jazz-funk flourishes and incessant energy of "Afterburner", the wonderfully deep and dusty shuffle of "In Orbit", and the pleasingly loose, tropical-tinged beats, spine-tingling deep house chords and loved-up vocal samples of killer EP closer "The Holtzman Effect".

Review: New Argentinian imprint Love & Loops present an impressive various artists EP exploring their aesthetic of deep and minimal house. Deeper Lovers EP features four deep and groovy tools for all kinds of dancefloors. First track "Blackhead" from JustGrowth is deep, subtle and hypnotic in the vein of Romanian sounds of present, while fellow Argentinian Sound Process' "Nebula" goes for a classic Windy City sound with its evocative Rhodes chords throughout. On the flip, Born To Jam, Marcelo D'alessandro & Seiffert present the booming old school bounce of "Tennessee".

Review: Newcomer JVXTA has been spotted previously on his own label Hardmatter, but you wouldn't think it's early days for the UK producer listening to the assured NY house flex of his guaranteed dancefloor bomb "Brawn." It also stand to reason that promising new Big Apple house label Homage have reached out across the Atlantic to make a fruitful connection, resulting in a crucial grip of contemporary house jams with classic touches in all the right places. As well as the garage swing of "Brawn" there's uptempo strutting aplenty to be had with "Rudy's Disc 31," while "When We Kiss" takes things in a sweeter, deeper direction. "State Of Nature" throws down tribal percussion and woozy synths for a heady track that contrasts neatly with the other more upfront offerings.
