Memories Of You EP (marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: UQ 036. Rel: 15 Dec 10
  1. Memories Of You
  2. Days Gone By
  3. Forever
  4. Reach
Review: Having done his bit to foster cordial relations between the US and Russia by releasing EPs from Anton Zap and Nina Kraviz, Underground Quality chief Jus-Ed turns his international gaze in the direction of the small, unassuming island(s) of Malta. The Malteser who earned the affection of Ed is Owen Jay, who lays down four slices of sumptuous deepness in the vein of Fred P. The A Side consists of "Memories Of You" and "Days Gone By", both of which are dripping in the emotive warmth that anything carrying the UQ stamp demands. Flip over for the eerie melodic shuffle of "Forever", while "Peach" rounds off a dope 12".

August EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BBR 14. Rel: 18 Sep 17
  1. August
  2. Acid Carpaccio
  3. Smoked
Review: Those Maltese bad boys Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana are back on their trusty Batti Batti steed with another sublime drift through velvety-smooth deep house cuts for discerning heads. "August" lays the pads on thick, making the groove all that sharper when they drop out, but it's not long before that filter opens back up to let the blissful tones back into the mix. As the name suggests "Acid Carpaccio" is a rougher concern, but it's still finished off with a classy finish and one eye on the deep end of the dance. "Smoked" notches up the swing and aims skywards with an uplifting, contemplative jam like this formidable duo have forged their name on.

Star Gazing EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CW 011. Rel: 19 Jun 17
  1. Star Gazing (feat Alfred Debattista) (5:51)
  2. Bubbles Floating In The Sky (5:30)
  3. Saturn (5:59)
Review: Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana are frequently found working in tandem on their particular brand of contemporary deep house, and this is the second time they've been snapped up by Contrast Wax following The Aftermath EP back in 2014. The mood is smooth and sultry on the title track for this new 12", with a sensual sax lead taking centre stage over the kind of gentle bump that would sit comfortably on Guidance Recordings. "Bubbles Floating In The Sky", as the title would suggest, is an equally mellow mover, while B-side lounger "Saturn" heads into even calmer waters with its hushed pad tones and technoid synth pulses.

  6. Country Gents - "Keep On" (Rotty remix)
  7. MLH - "You + Me"
  8. Freak D - "Power Of Bass"
  9. Franqy & Bailey - "Detroit Sunrise"
Review: 124 Recordings know how to put together a deep house compilation, and they're sounding fierce on this latest, appropriately titled Levels Up. The jams come heavy and funky from a range of on-point operators, leading in with Tom Jay's quintessential New Jersey bump n grind on "Hanging On". David Moran is a little more shadowy but no less groovesome, while Nicola Brusegan takes things on a sweet and smooth tip. Across the whole double pack there are classically informed jams to satisfy the most weary deep house heads, but keep an ear out for the old-school flavoured heft of Freak D's "Power Of Bass", which should get some seriously jacking airtime in the right kind of dance.

  3. Feel It (Jayda G & DJ Dog remix) (6:26)
Review: Vancouver Transplant in Berlin Jayda G strikes out on her own after some frequent collaborations with Sex Tags Mania man DJ Fett Burger, this time it's for the great Geography label out of Malmo, Sweden. The label has previous presented DJ Sotofett, Esther Duijin and Giovanni Damico. It's raw and jackin' house of the deeper shade on the wicked "Shake It Down (original)" while the vocal mix up next is a much moodier affair with some seductive femme vocals going to head with the druggy male vox, diving much deeper than the previous version.. On the flip there's more quality on "Feel It (Jayda G & DJ Dog remix)" which goes for a lovely latin vibe with those steel drums in full effect and much funkier while it's at it.

  2. Diva Bitch (DJ DOG Bitch Please mix) (6:01)
  3. Diva Bitch (DJ Fett Bugers Massive Bitch mix) (8:58)
Review: It's time to get freaky once again as Jayda G & Alexa Dash's heavily smashed martinet mission "Diva Bitch" gets the treatment from some kindred spirits. Fett Burger goes all dual personality with two twists as themselves and as DJ Dog. The former is a stripped back wriggler with full emphasis on the vocal while the latter takes things to more euphoric places. How it's the mysterious Speckgurtel's remix that really ticks the box. Laced with 1990 charm and a dizzying weave of humanised elements that fused and form and rise with vibrancy; drop this and your life may never be the same again.

Review: Having established the On A Mission label back in 2014 to release their debut single as The Groove Brothers, old pals Jef K and Rhythm&Soul have finally got around to putting out the label's first long player. Fittingly, it comes from the duo, and features a far wider variety of musical treats than we've seen on previous releases. While largely rooted in their usual brand of dusty, chunky house, there are notable variations and diversions throughout. Check, for example, the hip-house revivalism of "De La Thang", the intricate musical flourishes and jazz-flecked grooves of "Funky Path", and the sample-heavy, interlude style opener "We're On A Mission".

Eira (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MEL 003. Rel: 29 Aug 17
  1. Eira (feat Byron The Aquarius) (6:12)
  2. Eira (demo mix) (5:37)
Review: From 4Lux to Ten Thousand Yen, Earl Jeffers has been serving up plenty of upfront good time house music over the past few years, as well as steering the equally on point Chesus alias. Now he sidles over to the new Melange label with Byron The Aquarius in tow, and the sun kissed vibes are positively pouring out of the record grooves. "Eira" is where Byron flexes some on-point melodic input, laying down ludicrously rich keys to ramp up the soul status of this damn fine garage-y bumper. The "Demo Mix" of "Eira" resides on the flip and shows off a more stripped down, raw version that's no less satisfying on the ears.

Review: Get Down Records continues to serve up surprise seven-inch reissues of classic Chicago house cuts. The latest TRAX Records smash to get the treatment is Marshall Jefferson's "The House Music Anthem (Move Your Body)", a track famously mixed by sadly departed Music Box legend Ron Hardy. On the A-side you'll find a slightly shortened version of the original vocal mix, which did so much to popularize house music as a style worldwide. Over on the flip is the "Drum Your Body" instrumental version, which naturally strips out the vocal, adds a few more drum machine hits and emphasizes the now familiar stabbing synth riff and bouncy piano lines.

  3. Lifetime Theme (Lipelis Kebab House remix) (6:21)
  4. Lifetime Theme (Bell Towers remix) (5:48)
Review: Earlier in 2017, Russian producer, DJ and live musician Kito Jempere returned with his second album for Italian label Hell Yeah. Jempere plays live as the Kito Jempere Band, where he calls upon his bandmates for their many skills to lend the album a richly musical feel. Mixed and co-produced by band member Roman Urazov, the album featured Artemiy Gunbin aka Noteless on vocals, as well as drummer Ruslan Gadzhimuradov, Matvey Averin on bass and finally Sergey Lipsky - who plays guitar and is also half of Simple Symmetry. We now get treated to a series of brilliant remixes on this EP. Power duo Lauer and Fabrizio Mammarella aka Black Spuma deliver a typically neon-lit and retro makeover of "Ampa" (Black Spuma Energy Thieves vocal mix) and it's full of classic beatboxes, shimmering vintage synth arpeggios and a classic sense of swing. Russian producer Lipelis' remix of "Lifetime Theme" (Lipelis Kebab House remix) takes you deep into the exotic (with a pinch of acid) and Melbournian in Berlin Bell Towers delivers a balearic tinged rendition of the track too, that his earned him releases on Public Possession and Stamp The Wax.

Review: Russian producer Kirill Sergeev has been setting light to the likes of Hell Yeah, Bordello A Parigi and Bahnsteig 23 in the past under his Kito Jempere alias, and now it's the turn of Pleasure Unit to get his unique treatment. "House Track" may seem like an innocuous title but don't be fooled, it's far from a conventional house jam. Loose, 80s tinted production vibes abound across the record, not least with the party heaters on the A side. "Never Been To Ibiza Beaches 1997" is a more laid back jam, but still sizzling with inventive energy, and "Jungle Mantra" explores tribal percussion with a fresh slant that will call out to the tropical spinners.

  4. Keeping Funk Alive (Toby Tobias remix)
Review: Jerome C, born and raised at Haifa City Port in Israel, is a declared fan of vintage gear; always looking to explore the special analog sound. He creates music with a sumptuous mixture of house, disco, funk, and hip-hop. He first hit the house scene partnering with Double Hill for Soul Clap's imprint Double Standard releasing the amazing "I Need Love EP". For his latest offering three new cuts pressed and published by the Spanish label Apersonal Music.

"The Wind", "Keeping Funk Alive" and "You Better Think", three tracks characterized by the analog raw gear sounds, deep house gems that rolls over warm sonic waves and melodic bassline beats. The whole mood brights with sex appeal.

Quarion and Toby Tobias commissioned for the remixes. The first one releasing the uplifting house melodic remix for "The Wind", and Toby Tobias taking the dark sides on mental minimal techhouse by reshaping "Keeping Funk Alive".

Review: Steadily building up a prominent identity in the bustling minimal house and techno thoroughfare, The Untold Stories return with one of their signature various artist compilations to present some lesser known practitioners of the hypnotic groove. Jerome C gets a rugged angle on the swing to his beats on "An Intelligible Scrawl", while Volta Cab nods to a classic Tobias jam with "Street Knowledge". MD Wallholz's "Ein Bisschen Ruhe" is a shivering slice of experimental electro, and Jonas Sella brings an unhinged French flavour to proceedings, but truthfully every jam on this solidly packed release has its own distinct character that fits into the meandering tale the label is unfurling.

Review: A stunning rewind to 1990 for a well-deserved excavation of Boy George and Simon Rogers' "Generations Of Love" under their Jesus Loves You project. Subject to a dizzying array of remixes at the time of its 1990 release, these versions by Better Days NYC legend Bruce Forest were over-looked. Until now. Evergreen bliss in both jazz and ambient forms, with attention and respect paid to the lavish elements (especially Andy Whitmore's incredible piano solo), it's criminal these mixes never got the justice they deserved. Timeless disco gems with more than a touch of Balearic charm, these have matured impeccably and will still sound incredible in another 28 years time.

Review: Unswerving in all his capacities as a label owner, DJ and artist, Jimpster continues to burn into another vintage year with this superlative three track EP on his own Freerange imprint. "Curve" hits with the shimmers almost instantly but gets progressively cosmic as more layers are added while "The Sweetness Of That Song" eases us deeper into the dance with a maze lead layers all pointing the same mildly jazzy direction as a meatier electronic arpeggio runs amok beneath. "Simmering Down" lives up to its name on a much more introspective slower note that sounds best either at the very start or end of a perfect party.

Review: Founded in 2012 by Owain Bellis, 124 Recordings is the kind of no-nonsense label that DJs crave when seeking the right kind of rhythms to keep their sets popping off. On this latest release the heavyweight house of JMX kicks proceedings off with a monstrous line in beats and sweet, soulful tones riding in over the top. Steve Frisco nails the tech house sound with a heady, late night concoction of organ sounds and high-pressure drums, while Huggett takes cues from old skool hip hop to whip up his own kind of storm. Jus Jam feeds some garage influence into "Ghetto Minded" while layering up all kinds of licks and loops for a heavy-lidded, Detroit flavoured throwdown.

Review: Omar S' FXHE stable has become synonymous with trend-setting house and techno over the last ten years. Moreover, each time Alex O Smith brings about a new name to the FXHE dynasty it's always exciting news - last time around OB Ignitt was introduced to us in fine style through his Star Wars-themed brand of raw-schooled house. John FM's "Where My Roots Lie" is similarly spacey and freaked out, synth-heavy and filled to the brim with intricate Roland percussion. On the B-side, "White Churches Be Like" is the ticket, where a broken beat arrangement is diced and shredded by ice-cold snares; but "Solace" is the unexpected track on here, a slow and funked-out r&b monster in true FXHE style. Another solid missile.

This new release by rising star John FM follows up the well-received Alone and Where My Roots Lie EPs. Starting with the soulful machine funk of "Jehks" truly capturing the sounds of the city of industry in its heyday. There's then the fine R&B jam of "Motion" somewhat reminiscent of Theo Parrish & Andrew Ashong, but it's his smooth vocal delivery which undoubtedly makes it his own! On the flip, the mysterious and melancholic Omar-S remix of "Alone" is absolutely sublime, but just wait for the tough acid fuelled groove of "Gump" which truly takes it home in right fashion.

Review: Here is the long awaited third release from John FM. He is a 24 year old rising star from Detroit who follows up two well received EP's on Omar S' esteemed FXHE records - with yet more dusty machine funk for The Trilogy Tapes. He's found a fitting home on TTT, you can really hear it on the A side epic "Ricochet" as it pumps away beneath the lo-fi tape saturation, all hypnotic arpeggios and rusty drum patterns galore. On the flip, it's a classic Motor City affair from the first wave on the rather Derrick May sounding "..And Then Leave" which is in fact remixed by local legend Brian Kage of Michigander and Reference fame. It's a great one packed full of emotive church organs, razor sharp synth melodies and evocative pads. Follows up a great release on the label in the from of Omar S' collaboration with Los Angeles based songstress Nite Jewel on the wonderful "Confess To U".

Review: For reliable, jacking, and horny drum tracks, Paul Johnson's debut on the prolific Chiwax is probably the best thing since DJ Slugo's recently repressed Livin' That Ghetto Life 12". At six tracks large - three on each side - this record is a weapon for the DJ and stand out vocal cuts include "Aww Shit" and Who's Psy Is This", while for instrumental melt downs check out "Speech Impediment" and the almost Yello sounding "Relieve Me".

  2. Kooky Chords (6:33)
  3. Positive Pressure (feat Kevin Knapp) (6:12)
  4. Parallel Universe (6:32)
Review: Hot Creations boss Jamie Jones manages to find time for another release, in between his Ibiza residency and travelling the globe as one of modern house music's most popular DJs. His latest offering brings everything you'd expect from the Welshman and nothing less. These four Summery and pop-inflected tech house cuts are hot material on their own and make a cohesive EP. Starting off with the anthemic "Sound Of Music" covering jungle legend Nookie's track of the same name and with pop sensation Katy B on vocals. The rolling peak time groove "Kooky Chords" is absolutely the sound of not only 'The Island' but Jones' label and will bang the party just as much as recent offerings by wAFF or Phil Kieran. On the flip, there's a bouncy and sleazy early evening jam in the form of "Positive Pressure" featuring American Kevin Knapp and the druggy/minimal afterhours DJ tool "Parallel Universe".

  1. A Month Of Rain
  2. Made Visible
Review: Returning to the fray for the second installment in its deep house venture, the People Are Looking At You imprint sees a confident expansion on the sultry tones laid out on the first slab of wax, featuring a sturdy pair of cuts from London production duo Jonno & Tommo. Taking charge with the A side, "A Month Of Rain" is a multi-faceted mover loaded with suspense and surprise. In its opening strains the sharp beat ticks out across a sparse, dub-informed soundscape that slowly fills out via a captivating chord refrain, haunting and seductive in equal measure. Without giving too much away ahead of experiencing the track for yourself, be prepared for a dazzling break in the clouds that lifts the summit of the track into an entirely different headspace. On a different kind of house agenda, "Made Visible" creeps into action on a slow and slamming bed of rough drums and immersive bass notes, subtle flashes of percussion creating kinks in the groove and the choice vocal samples injecting warmth and soul into the otherworldly atmosphere. When the climactic chords come in to signal the second half of the track, it brings the ranging elements to the surface for a truly soul-cleansing experience.
Proving that house tracks need not stagnate in the same mood from start to finish, PALAY02 is a strong next step for a label committed to bringing something new to the table.

Finale Sessions Unreleased Vol 1 (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Jonno & Tommo - "Dirty Nylons" (6:32)
  2. Michael Zucker - "Just Believe" (6:43)
  3. Michael Zucker - "Narrow Is The Gate" (6:39)
  4. Jonno & Tommo - "Shark City" (6:59)
Review: Michael Zucker continues to steer the good ship Finale Sessions with a steady hand on the deep house tiller, and this time he's enlisted Ornate regulars Jonno & Tommo as trusty deck hands. Their track "Dirty Nylons" opens the record up in a woozy haze of twinkling piano and dreamy chords slipping in and out of earshot. Zucker follows this up with the moody tones of "Just Believe", before leaping over to the B side to roll out the broken beats and heavy reverb of "Narrow Is The Gate". Jonno & Tommo then round the record off with the sensual rub down of "Shark City", pitting pattering percussion against snappy chords and a steamy vocal lick for saucier moments in the club.
