  1. Jam For Real - "Maybe You Are" (6:11)
  2. Evolve - "Let's Drop" (6:38)
  3. Jus Jam - "Midnight Special" (6:02)
  4. Kerstone - "New Season" (7:32)
Review: The Eastern India-inspired Khasia Hills label is the brainchild of graphic designer Mornigradient and a quartet of producers, three of which (Jam For Real, Jus Jam and Kerstone) contribute cuts to the imprint's second outing. Up first is the ultra-dreamy but thrillingly bouncy "Maybe You Are" by Jam For Real, which manages to make use of both mind-altering analogue electronics and fluid piano solos. Newcomer Evolve doffs a cap to early Italian dream house on the tactile and groovy "Let's Drop", before Jus Jam delivers the melodious and jaunty deep house richness of "Midnight Special". Not to be outdone, label co-founder Kerstone takes us on a trip into deep space via the intergalactic chords, cascading synthesizer melodies and bubbling dub house beats of "New Season".

Tadao (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: LT 002. Rel: 26 Jun 17
  1. Scotland Yard
  2. Tadao
  3. M Island
  4. The Light Without Love
Review: Burgeoning Melbourne-based label Local Traffic returns with its second release, calling on the talents of lesser-known producer James IV. While this may be the chap's first time stepping out, his sound is already highly developed. Massive dub techno chords collide with fractured rhythms and exotic vocal intonations on the excellent "Scotland Yard", while "Tadao" leans on hand-drummed percussion and stripped down deep house of a truly refined nature. "M Island" is a lead-heavy, subliminal stomper with plenty of low-end presence, and then "The Light Without Love" throws something of a curveball at the end with its comparatively uptempo machine rhythms and subtly euphoric nature.

  1. Jamie 3:26 & Masalo - "Testify" (8:18)
  2. Sameed - "Can't U" (4:43)
  3. Sameed - "Dusty Jazz" (Late Night edit) (5:56)
Review: The latest missive from Sweden's fine Local Talk label is a multi-artist affair, with fine contributions from label regular Sameed, Chicago legend Jamie 3:26, and rising star Masalo. The latter two join forces on fabulous A-side "Testify", a low-slung, disco-tinged deep house bomb built around righteous rhythms, impassioned, gospel-influenced blues vocals, and killer Clavinet parts. On the flip, Sameed's first contribution is a riff on the same basic cut, utilizing the same samples but venturing further towards dirty, late night disco territory. He also provides a fine bonus in the shape of "Dusty Jazz", a sample-heavy jazz-house workout complete with wavering horns, rich bass and twinkling electric piano solos.

IILE 03 (180 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Reefing 101 (6:14)
  2. The Blackhawks (6:50)
  3. Twinpole (6:19)
  4. Swanbourne (7:42)
Review: Since returning to action a couple of years back following a near two-decade hiatus, 1990s deep house survivor Ewan Jansen has barely put a foot wrong. With this in mind, it's perhaps unsurprising to find that this outing on IILE is packed full of evocative, melodious and floor-friendly gems. The Australia-based producer begins in confident mood via the darting synth bass, sun-kissed chords and melodious positivity of the wonderful "Reefing 101", before exploring slightly deeper pastures on the huggable warmth of Motor City influenced bumper "The Blackhawks". On the flip you'll find the Larry Heard style lusciousness of "Twinpole" and "Swarbourne", a jazzy and percussive workout smothered in deep space chord progressions. All killer and no filler: job done.

  5. Erewhon (6:58)
Review: When Butter Sessions approached Ewan Jansen about doing a release with them, the Perth-based '90s survivor was more than happy to open up his bulging archives. The resultant EP, Best Intentions, contains a pleasingly eclectic collection of tracks that were apparently recorded at various points between 2002 and 2016. Many will be attracted to the lucid, Balearic deep house breeziness of opener "Credo" and the slightly trippy, low-slung analogue house excursion "Harbinger", both of which reside on the A-side. There's plenty of intoxicating thrills to be found on the flipside, though, with impeccable ambient jazz number "On The Beach" and intelligent techno bubbler "Blueprint" standing out.

  1. Docking Lane (6:48)
  2. Bulkhead (6:29)
  3. Deceleration (6:52)
  4. Perspex (6:36)
Review: Having recently resurfaced via his Red Ember label and a further run of essential releases on Going Good, Hardworksoftdrink and many more, Ewan Jansen is in fine fettle now as he shores up to Inner Shift with some high class house music for the heads. "Docking Lane" is as deep as they get, but that doesn't come at the cost of the beat which strides forth with purpose underneath the hum of the pads. "Bulkhead" gets a classic Latin drum machine vibe going, "Deceleration" takes things lighter and sparser, and then "Perspex" finishes the EP off with some warm, funky fare. Throughout the EP, Jansen's link to the formative years of deep house shine through - this is the sound of someone who knows what they're doing.

  4. Trinidadian Deep - "Move Me" (Mr YT remix)
Review: Chubby has already earned its stripes as a podcast and party in Australia dealing in connoisseurs' deep house, and their leap to the world of vinyl is no less classy. The first release splits a 12" between four esteemed practitioners of true skool beats for switched on heads, leading in with Antipodean maestro Ewan Jansen. After delivering the plush tones of his "Plants," Moods & Grooves label boss Mike Grant pops up to remix Jansen with stunning, understated results. Trinidadian Deep takes over on the B side with the typically shimmering melodics and dextrous drums he's much loved for. Mr YT then serves up a final remix, nudging "Move Me" just a little up the energy scale with the help of a killer organ line placed at the front of the mix.

Review: Javonntte up next on French label Luud Discs. Brian Garrett has had a massive year, with releases on Skylax, Visions Inc, People Of Earth and LPH White. The Detroit native has worked with Andres and Amp Fiddler, and has also toured as a dancer with Aretha Franklin. He delivers four deeply emotive house expressions on the From Paris To The World EP. From the pumping and vocal-led NYC basement style shuffle of "Rock With It" calling to mind the likes of Mr. V or Jovonn, the hypnotic boompty business of "Jmix" or the timeless Prescription Records style vibe of "Romance" - this one goes out to all the proper house heads out there.

  5. Organic J Mix 2 (5:24)
Review: It would be fair to say that Javontte (AKA original '90s deep house producer Brian Garrett) has been making up for lost time. Since returning to action in 2016, he's released no less than ten 12" singles, all of which have been packed with high quality material. Predictably, it's hard to find fault with the five fine tracks featured on Garrett's first contribution to the Let's Play House "White" series. Check, for example, the bumpin' '90s deep house warmth of opener "Just Listen", where ascending electric piano lines rise above toasty chords and sneaky vocal samples, and the feel-good roll of "Capricorn". Elsewhere, we recommend the spacey bounce of "City to City People", which also features a wobbly, D&B style bassline, and the laidback dancefloor jazziness of evocative closer "Organic J Mix 2".

Review: Under the Javonntte pseudonym, Brian Garrett has delivered some of the most impressive deep house records of recent years. Predictably, the quality threshold remains high throughout this latest Javonntte EP, Garett's first for Alex Attias's Visions Inc. label. On the A-side you'll find "Vocal" and "Radio" versions of "Searchin", a soul-powered chunk of analogue-rich deepness that sits somewhere between the musically complex brilliance of Ron Trent and the slick, rolling warmth of early '90s Goldtone Records releases. Turn to the B-side and you'll find "Private Party", a chunkier and rougher, riff-propelled peak-time bumper, and the redlined, Chez Damier-meets-Derrick Carter bounce of "Life Rhythm". As the old cliche goes, this is all killer and no filler.

  4. Remember The Future (Nick Anthony Simoncino edit) (5:11)
Review: Berlin's Murphy Jax continues his impressive line of form with another a new 12" for the unstoppable Chiwax, the label which released his debut album a few years back. Aside from them, the dude has collaborated with a number of labels including Clone Jack For Daze and Hypercolour's Limited offshoot, dishing out some of his bouncy drum machine funk each and every time. "Tempation" features Mike Anderson on vocals and it's a veritable Chicago revival stunner; there's a Jori Hulkkonen edit of his own "Keep Your Body Moving" cut; "Don't Say No" is a chord-heavy stomper that's bound to receive quite the head nodding on the floor, while "Remember The Future" is given a proper seeing to by main man Nick Anthony Simoncino - raw beat thrashing and a whole load of analogue love.

  4. Christian Jay & Crump - "GG3" (7:14)
Review: Bristol's Banoffee Pies are back with their 11th edition. But as far it goes musically: this certainty ain't Bristol! Starting out with the smoothly reduced tendencies of local lad Christian Jay's "Rhotic" which sounds inspired by the sounds of Trelik, there's more of the same (albeit much dubbier and smoked out) on "Starry Nite Life" courtesy of Utrecht's Larry de Kat; very paranoid afterhour vibes on this one! On the flip we've got some more dubbed out fare courtesy of Christian Jay, again, who enlists a bit of help from Crump on the rusty and dust coated "GG3". All Caps artist Florist adds a touch of Vancouver to proceedings with the squelchy DJ tool "Blacky."

Review: Minuendo keep things interesting on this latest various artists 12", primarily focusing on Owen Jay and Brian James on the A side for two tracks of adventurous experimentation on the wild frontier of minimal house music. The wobbly synth running through "Niko's Groove" is a real head turner, while "Imagery" nudges the grand tradition of dub house into a new pocket of ambience that draws you in immediately. There's a lovely, classic deep house joint from Untitled called "Seafood", and then Blue Vulva & The Electronic Crooner completely flip the script on the B2 with rowdy acid burner "Vulbitch Bazaar".

Review: Those Maltese bad boys Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana are back on their trusty Batti Batti steed with another sublime drift through velvety-smooth deep house cuts for discerning heads. "August" lays the pads on thick, making the groove all that sharper when they drop out, but it's not long before that filter opens back up to let the blissful tones back into the mix. As the name suggests "Acid Carpaccio" is a rougher concern, but it's still finished off with a classy finish and one eye on the deep end of the dance. "Smoked" notches up the swing and aims skywards with an uplifting, contemplative jam like this formidable duo have forged their name on.

  2. Bubbles Floating In The Sky (5:30)

Review: Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana are frequently found working in tandem on their particular brand of contemporary deep house, and this is the second time they've been snapped up by Contrast Wax following The Aftermath EP back in 2014. The mood is smooth and sultry on the title track for this new 12", with a sensual sax lead taking centre stage over the kind of gentle bump that would sit comfortably on Guidance Recordings. "Bubbles Floating In The Sky", as the title would suggest, is an equally mellow mover, while B-side lounger "Saturn" heads into even calmer waters with its hushed pad tones and technoid synth pulses.

Review: 124 Recordings know how to put together a deep house compilation, and they're sounding fierce on this latest, appropriately titled Levels Up. The jams come heavy and funky from a range of on-point operators, leading in with Tom Jay's quintessential New Jersey bump n grind on "Hanging On". David Moran is a little more shadowy but no less groovesome, while Nicola Brusegan takes things on a sweet and smooth tip. Across the whole double pack there are classically informed jams to satisfy the most weary deep house heads, but keep an ear out for the old-school flavoured heft of Freak D's "Power Of Bass", which should get some seriously jacking airtime in the right kind of dance.

The label has previous presented DJ Sotofett, Esther Duijin and Giovanni Damico. It's raw and jackin' house of the deeper shade on the wicked "Shake It Down (original)" while the vocal mix up next is a much moodier affair with some seductive femme vocals going to head with the druggy male vox, diving much deeper than the previous version.. On the flip there's more quality on "Feel It (Jayda G & DJ Dog remix)" which goes for a lovely latin vibe with those steel drums in full effect and much funkier while it's at it.

Review: Having established the On A Mission label back in 2014 to release their debut single as The Groove Brothers, old pals Jef K and Rhythm&Soul have finally got around to putting out the label's first long player. Fittingly, it comes from the duo, and features a far wider variety of musical treats than we've seen on previous releases. While largely rooted in their usual brand of dusty, chunky house, there are notable variations and diversions throughout. Check, for example, the hip-house revivalism of "De La Thang", the intricate musical flourishes and jazz-flecked grooves of "Funky Path", and the sample-heavy, interlude style opener "We're On A Mission".

Now he sidles over to the new Melange label with Byron The Aquarius in tow, and the sun kissed vibes are positively pouring out of the record grooves. "Eira" is where Byron flexes some on-point melodic input, laying down ludicrously rich keys to ramp up the soul status of this damn fine garage-y bumper. The "Demo Mix" of "Eira" resides on the flip and shows off a more stripped down, raw version that's no less satisfying on the ears.

The latest TRAX Records smash to get the treatment is Marshall Jefferson's "The House Music Anthem (Move Your Body)", a track famously mixed by sadly departed Music Box legend Ron Hardy. On the A-side you'll find a slightly shortened version of the original vocal mix, which did so much to popularize house music as a style worldwide. Review: For the latest EP on their offshoot record label, Birmingham party collective Shadow City has turned to young producer Jeigo. The producer may well be one to watch in the months and years ahead, because there are few faults to be found on this impressive debut EP. Check first the gentle, tech-tinged deep house shuffle of "Everywhere I Go", which makes fantastic use of a crackly, heart-aching vocal sample, before admiring the layered drums, darting synth bass and heady scat vocal samples of heads-down workout "Lordbuck Jazz". Jeigo successfully turns his hand to drowsy, ultra-deep house on the luscious and warming "Not Used To Love", before Big Miz reaches for the vibraphone solos on a surprisingly jaunty deep house makeover of "Lordbuck Jazz".

  3. Never Been To Ibiza Beaches 1997
  4. Jungle Mantra
Review: Russian producer Kirill Sergeev has been setting light to the likes of Hell Yeah, Bordello A Parigi and Bahnsteig 23 in the past under his Kito Jempere alias, and now it's the turn of Pleasure Unit to get his unique treatment. "House Track" may seem like an innocuous title but don't be fooled, it's far from a conventional house jam. Loose, 80s tinted production vibes abound across the record, not least with the party heaters on the A side. "Never Been To Ibiza Beaches 1997" is a more laid back jam, but still sizzling with inventive energy, and "Jungle Mantra" explores tribal percussion with a fresh slant that will call out to the tropical spinners.

  4. Lifetime Theme (Bell Towers remix) (5:48)
Review: Earlier in 2017, Russian producer, DJ and live musician Kito Jempere returned with his second album for Italian label Hell Yeah. Jempere plays live as the Kito Jempere Band, where he calls upon his bandmates for their many skills to lend the album a richly musical feel. Mixed and co-produced by band member Roman Urazov, the album featured Artemiy Gunbin aka Noteless on vocals, as well as drummer Ruslan Gadzhimuradov, Matvey Averin on bass and finally Sergey Lipsky - who plays guitar and is also half of Simple Symmetry. We now get treated to a series of brilliant remixes on this EP. Power duo Lauer and Fabrizio Mammarella aka Black Spuma deliver a typically neon-lit and retro makeover of "Ampa" (Black Spuma Energy Thieves vocal mix) and it's full of classic beatboxes, shimmering vintage synth arpeggios and a classic sense of swing. Russian producer Lipelis' remix of "Lifetime Theme" (Lipelis Kebab House remix) takes you deep into the exotic (with a pinch of acid) and Melbournian in Berlin Bell Towers delivers a balearic tinged rendition of the track too, that his earned him releases on Public Possession and Stamp The Wax.

  1. Jenifa Mayanja - "Are You Going With It?"
  2. Jus ED - "Struggle For Success" (part 8)
Review: Husband and wife deep house team Jus Ed and Jenifa Mayanja join forces for a pair of refined and mildly haunting cuts that bear all the hallmarks of the Underground Quality family. Jenifa Mayanja's jam "Are You Going With It?" plunges into dense swathes of undulating pads, while the pleasantly spacious beat pops off in a broken fashion. Jenifa's conscious intonations about time sit comfortably in the spiritually enhancing grooves, urging closed eyes and released inhibitions. Ed flies on the flip with "Struggle For Success (part 8)", maintaining that gentle and immersive approach to house music. The beats rattle away with more prominence than the A-side counterpart, but the melodies come on even more sensitive and soothing.

  1. On The Floor (Studio 54 mix) (6:39)
Review: One of the true underground heroes of the Detroit techno scene, Dwayne Jensen has been there from the beginning and worked with everyone from Kevin Saunderson to Scott Grooves and Norm Talley, to name but a few. His own productions have featured on a who's who of labels from Soiree, Rawax, his own Fathom imprint and of course London's Landed: who for Record Store Day 2017 present this. Treat yourself to his new edit entitled "On The Floor" (Studio 54 mix). We sure know this one: it's an oldie but a goodie and Jensen shows his deft hand at re-splicing a classic disco tune for modern dancefloors.

Review: Our first release on is/was comes courtesy of Detroit's own Dwayne Jensen. For those in the know, Dwayne requires no introduction. Behind the decks since the 80's, Dwayne has carved himself a spot in the history books of Detroit house and techno. He's equally accomplished in the studio with releases on KMS, Dockside, Landed and his own Fathom Records imprint. This 4 tracker sees Dwayne in top form with 3 straight ahead, swung and stabby house tracks and 1 slow burner for the after hours.

  4. Keeping Funk Alive (Toby Tobias remix)
Review: Jerome C, born and raised at Haifa City Port in Israel, is a declared fan of vintage gear; always looking to explore the special analog sound. He creates music with a sumptuous mixture of house, disco, funk, and hip-hop. He first hit the house scene partnering with Double Hill for Soul Clap's imprint Double Standard releasing the amazing "I Need Love EP". For his latest offering three new cuts pressed and published by the Spanish label Apersonal Music.

"The Wind", "Keeping Funk Alive" and "You Better Think", three tracks characterized by the analog raw gear sounds, deep house gems that rolls over warm sonic waves and melodic bassline beats. The whole mood brights with sex appeal.

Quarion and Toby Tobias commissioned for the remixes. The first one releasing the uplifting house melodic remix for "The Wind", and Toby Tobias taking the dark sides on mental minimal techhouse by reshaping "Keeping Funk Alive".

Review: Steadily building up a prominent identity in the bustling minimal house and techno thoroughfare, The Untold Stories return with one of their signature various artist compilations to present some lesser known practitioners of the hypnotic groove. Jerome C gets a rugged angle on the swing to his beats on "An Intelligible Scrawl", while Volta Cab nods to a classic Tobias jam with "Street Knowledge". MD Wallholz's "Ein Bisschen Ruhe" is a shivering slice of experimental electro, and Jonas Sella brings an unhinged French flavour to proceedings, but truthfully every jam on this solidly packed release has its own distinct character that fits into the meandering tale the label is unfurling.

  1. Generations Of Love (Jazz mix) (6:11)
  2. Generations Of Love (Ambient mix) (5:58)
Review: A stunning rewind to 1990 for a well-deserved excavation of Boy George and Simon Rogers' "Generations Of Love" under their Jesus Loves You project. Subject to a dizzying array of remixes at the time of its 1990 release, these versions by Better Days NYC legend Bruce Forest were over-looked. Until now. Evergreen bliss in both jazz and ambient forms, with attention and respect paid to the lavish elements (especially Andy Whitmore's incredible piano solo), it's criminal these mixes never got the justice they deserved. Timeless disco gems with more than a touch of Balearic charm, these have matured impeccably and will still sound incredible in another 28 years time.
