Atmospheres EP2 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BBR 10. Rel: 16 Nov 15
  1. Saverio Celestri - "Detroit Feeling" (7:44)
  2. Jordan - "Device" (5:44)
  3. Dan Mela - "Tenuta Ken" (feat Stefano Calzolari) (10:09)
Review: Ten releases it is now for Batti Batti Records and to mark this milestone we are delighted to present the second in our Atmospheres series. Featuring once again artists old and new to the label, the EP very much takes its cue from the spirit of the first Atmospheres release.

Young Berlin-based Italian producer Saverio Celestri, who shined on BBR05, the Crossover EP, sets the tone beautifully with the haunting and emotionally-charged Detroit Feeling. Having previously collaborated with Fred P for Deep Explorer, Brooklyn-based artist Jordan (Finale Sessions/Ornate) debuts alone here for us with the wonderfully dark, twitchy and yet persistently funky, Device.
A
Another Batti Batti newcomer, the vastly-experienced Dan Mela, rounds off proceedings with the stunning 10-minute tour de force that is Tenuta Ken (featuring acclaimed Italian jazz pianist Stefano Calzolari), which showcases to perfection the producer's passion for soul, funk and jazz.

  1. Anomalous Diffusion (8:39)
  2. Kazumi Cycle (7:48)
  3. Contagion (5:30)
Review: So far, the best part of Jouem's career seems to have been shaped by the Mojuba imprint, a label that rarely ever puts in something below excellent, and one whose label heads curate diligently. The shady artist returns with the fifth instalment of the series, and "Anomalous Diffusion" kicks it off with a deep, meandering pulse that showcases the best of what dubby house has to offer; on the flip, "Kazumi Cycle" strips the whole amalgam down to a mystical and pensive whirlpool of fuzzy bass waves and slow drum machine beats that are wrapped in a misty fog of sonics. "Contagion" is our favourite piece, its subtle addition of semi breaks at the core give it something special, and place it a step above any other recent house turn we've heard. This is some deep gear - we can't wait for the sixth chapter!

Ophelia EP (12")
Cat: EVR 007. Rel: 13 Sep 12
  1. Vandaleur
  2. Forgotten Hauler
  3. Ophelia
Review: Starting to make diversions from his beloved $tinkworx moniker, JT Stewart makes his second outing under his own name for Greece's Echovolt label, dealing in sumptuous analogue synthesis in a strange vein somewhere between house and techno, although certainly not tech house. It's richly melodic stuff, but also detuned just enough to add some excitement and mystery to the mix. "Vandaleur" struts along with a sci-fi-horror tone, while "Forgotten Hauler" gets a bit rougher in the percussion department while the synths pound out a Detroit manifesto. "Ophelia" on the B-Side takes a more relaxed affair as the groove skips playfully and light piano and string pads define the atmosphere.

  6. IDK (5:05)
Review: Interestingly, Steven "Funkineven" Julien's follow-up to 2016 debut album Fallen had two major inspirations: the musical influences offered by his extended family (hence the title, Bloodline) and the Roland TR-808 drum machine (when he started the recording process, Julien decided to pay tribute to the iconic engineer who created it, Ikutaro Kakehashi, who passed away this time last year). While the latter influence is evident throughout - particularly on the A-side's suite of heavyweight, off-kilter jack-tracks and sweaty, alien techno workouts - it's harder to know where Julien's relatives fit in. Certainly, there's woozy warmth to be found on the B-side's more open and melodious cuts, which variously touch on new-age synth-pop, vintage analogue deep house and the producer's beloved '80s soul sounds, while retaining his trademark jammed-out looseness.

Cat: RUG 507T. Rel: 23 Nov 12
  1. Junior Boys - "Like A Child" (Carl Craig remix)
  2. Blood Orange - "Champagne Coast" (Mike Simonetti remix)
Review: Remixers must jump at the chance to work with a Junior Boys vocal and this time around it's Carl Craig who has caught the bouquet. CC works the "Like A Child" vocal to perfection, pitching it alongside harmonious synths, a body moving bass line and subtle percussion. Mike Simonetti hits up some indie dance vibes in his remix to Blood Orange's "Champagne Coast" as a walking bass line embraces washed-out vocals and shimmering synths.

Review: Junior Fairplay steps up with a special one-sided Crimes Of The Future release. While we can't confirm if Junior Fairplay is an alias for Timothy Fairplay, we do know that this upbeat piece of Korg M1-featuring breakbeat house is the kind of 90s throwback music we want to be hearing right now - absolutely essential stuff.

  2. End Of Love (Roy Of The Ravers remix 1) (6:43)
  3. The Shazsquatch Goes Back Into The Woods (4:49)
  4. Faxes From The Future (6:48)
Review: It's been a hot minute since Timothy J. Fairplay slipped on his Junior Fairplay guise, but he's done just that for this bleep-tastic new 12" on (Emotional) Especial. "End Of Love" is unabashed in its embrace of early Yorkshire techno tones, making a fine job of resurrecting the bleep spectre and letting it shake up the dance once more. Roy Of The Ravers is a smart choice of remixer, and he brings an off-kilter acid rub to the table in his idiosyncratic, braindance-inflected style. The B-side is equal laden with purposefully dusty dance grooves transplanted from the late 80s / early 90s, with "Faxes From The Future" hitting a particularly sharp point in its lazy breakbeat roll and the clanging harmonies of the stabs.

  3. Infinite Dub
  4. Edicts of Ashoka
  5. Crystal Analysis
Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Juniper, the Manchester-based duo who showed much promise with early outings on Underground Quality and the like. Having previously popped up on a various artists 12", they return to the ever-essential meandyou with a strong statement of intent, packing five tracks into an EP that presents their subversive style immaculately. "Indigo Children" is a head-turning cut that fuses uptempo Motor City style electro and techno with industrial tones, while "Life Source Negative" switches stance for a beautiful, craftily constructed drift into woozy deep house. Every track is noteworthy on this release, balancing immediacy and warmth against experimental textures in a way that sits very comfortably on meandyou.

  4. In Orbit (5:43)
  5. The Holtzman Effect (5:38)
Review: Hans Peeman seems to be using the alternative New Franklin Theory alias to deliver music that combines dusty, dreamy deep house tropes with tons of original boogie and electrofunk instrumentation. As this second New Franklin Theory 12" proves, it's a winning formula. The majority of the five tracks are propelled forwards by deep house beats and squelchy synth basslines, with Peeman altering the levels of disco and boogie instrumentation atop. For starters, check the bustling beats, rubbery synth-bass, jazz-funk flourishes and incessant energy of "Afterburner", the wonderfully deep and dusty shuffle of "In Orbit", and the pleasingly loose, tropical-tinged beats, spine-tingling deep house chords and loved-up vocal samples of killer EP closer "The Holtzman Effect".

Review: New Argentinian imprint Love & Loops present an impressive various artists EP exploring their aesthetic of deep and minimal house. Deeper Lovers EP features four deep and groovy tools for all kinds of dancefloors. First track "Blackhead" from JustGrowth is deep, subtle and hypnotic in the vein of Romanian sounds of present, while fellow Argentinian Sound Process' "Nebula" goes for a classic Windy City sound with its evocative Rhodes chords throughout. On the flip, Born To Jam, Marcelo D'alessandro & Seiffert present the booming old school bounce of "Tennessee".

Rudy's Disc 31 (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Brawn (7:24)
  2. Rudy's Disc 31 (8:18)
  3. When We Kiss (6:13)
  4. State Of Nature (7:13)
Review: Newcomer JVXTA has been spotted previously on his own label Hardmatter, but you wouldn't think it's early days for the UK producer listening to the assured NY house flex of his guaranteed dancefloor bomb "Brawn." It also stand to reason that promising new Big Apple house label Homage have reached out across the Atlantic to make a fruitful connection, resulting in a crucial grip of contemporary house jams with classic touches in all the right places. As well as the garage swing of "Brawn" there's uptempo strutting aplenty to be had with "Rudy's Disc 31," while "When We Kiss" takes things in a sweeter, deeper direction. "State Of Nature" throws down tribal percussion and woozy synths for a heady track that contrasts neatly with the other more upfront offerings.

Cat: WOK 15. Rel: 10 Nov 14
  1. The Story Of Her Life
  2. GWRH
  3. Insecurities
  4. Gratitude
  5. Yellow
Review: Having previously only appeared on WotNot Music in the past couple of years, K15 now slides over to Wild Oats to deliver a wholly appropriate slab of fluttering house romanticism rich in Detroit dreams and Chicago cheekiness, wherever the music might have been conceived. The cheekiness is no doubt most noticeable on "GWRH" with its homage to "Gypsy Woman", turning it into a fluttering Latino house jam, but before that comes the plush bump n rub of "The Story Of Her Life". "Insecurities" gets into a sexier kind of deep house funk, which "Gratitude" dutifully carries on until "Yellow" can round the record out with some largely beatless piano business.

Review: The journey back into the vaults of seminal Italian house music label Vibraphone Records continues apace with this gem from 1993. K2 was a one-off project for central label figures The True Underground Sound of Rome, and this Loss Of Gravity 12" represents one of the most sought after rarities from the Vibraphone catalogue. The on-point breakbeats of "The Journey", the wistful tones of "In My Garden", the plush ambient refrains of "Lirica" - every inch of this record is steeped in class that belies the age of the music. Need we say more - this is a buy on sight reissue that won't stick around for long.

  1. I <3 U (6:10)
  2. Johnny Hartman (5:26)
  3. Umusa (3:57)
  4. Passacaille (10:02)
Review: It would be fair to say that Kaffe Creme is a producer on the rise. There was rightly much hype around his 2016 debuyt on Moonrise Hill Material and it's likely that this belated follow-up on Vertv will be equally well received. He hits the ground running by wrapping muted blues trumpet around a crunchy MPC-house groove on "I <3 U", before brilliantly alternating between woozy sample manipulation and dusty deep house beats on the odd-but-ace "Jonny Hartman". On the flipside, he first charged off towards 140 BPM territory on the stop-start dancefloor insanity of "Umusa", before proving his Pepe Bradock style deep disco-house credentials on the sublime "Passacaille", which rounds off a fine EP in stunning fashion.

  1. Shut Your Eyes (feat James Garcia) (6:05)
  2. It's Not Over (4:55)
  3. Bear Gonna Getcha (6:08)
Review: A White Bear's Heaven... Is A Black Bear's Hell is something of a departure from the smooth, deep and undulating sound we've come to expect from Omar-S's FXHE label. It signals experienced producer Brian Kage's first outing for four years. While that release for Beretta Red paid tribute to atmospheric techno, this outing is far more inspired by late '80s Chicago house and acid. The standout is undoubtedly "Shut Your Eyes", a co-production with Omar-S that wraps James Garcia's soulful, heartfelt vocals around classic synth-strings, tactile stabs and pared-down, '80s style drum machine hits. He switches off the lights and signals more of a heads-down mood on the First Choice-sampling "It's Not Over" - a thrillingly tactile, synth-laden jacker - while "Bear Gonna Getcha" sounds like a warehouse anthem in waiting.

  1. The Arc (6:31)
  2. The Arc (Stringless mix) (4:59)
  3. D Drive (5:42)
  4. Transcending (6:26)
Review: Longstanding Detroit deepsmith Kage returns on his brand new label Michigander. The result? Three superlative exercises in synth soul and an on-point version for later hours. "The Arc" prowls with all the string-soaked majesty of an early Rolando cut while the stringless version hits a little harder. "D Drive" jacks with a slappy bass groove while tipping a slight nod to Yazoo with its vibrant riffy ripples while "Transcending" is all about the big dubby synth washes and off-kick bass palpitations. Let's hope there'll be more to gander from Michigander very soon.

Review: House Music With Love makes a welcome return to the fray with a fresh new 12" from Kaldera and Lazarusman, who team up to present the swirling, thought-provoking "Oceans Of My Mind." Between Kaldera's brooding production and Lazarusman's off-centre poetry, it's the kind of track that will suit a lot of different environments and always stand out. As well as the original, there's a strong run of remixes on offer here, from Urmet K's softer, smoother deep house approach to SURAJ's infectiously funky version, wrapping up with the more epic peak time thrust of Simina Grigoriu & Moe Danger's take on the distinctive source material.

Review: Steel City Dance Discs: the vinyl only label curated by Mall Grab and most likely named after his hometown town of Newcastle in New South Wales Australia. It has served up killer releases recently by the likes of Ghettohousedrummachine, DJ Astral and X-Coast. It's now the turn of Jun Kamoda of Mister Saturday Night and Kabukahrythm fame. The quirky neon-lit funk of "Flaming Flamingo" starts of the A side along with the dusty and hypnotic confusion of "Misty Funk" which would be perfect for playing at an after-hours. On the flip, the EPs most lively moment comes in the form of the uplifting "The Fine Line" reminiscent of early Derrick Carter's Sound Patrol project.
