Wirikuta (feat Dreems remix) (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: C 003. Rel: 26 Mar 18
  1. Wirikuta
  2. Marakame
  3. Maxa
  4. Wirikuta (Dreems remix)
Review: A lot of Inigo Vontier's early material was confined to the digital realm, but now the Mexican DJ and producer is starting to get recognition on wax for his heady brew of old methods and a taste for the freakier end of the party spectrum. This 12" for Mexican label Calypso leads in with the strangely unsettling but strident "Wirikuta," before the snappy surge of tightly wound tech variation "Marakame" comes leaping into ear shot. "Maxa" marks out its own unique space with a heavy broken beat excursion, leaving it to Dreems to ruminate on "Wirikuta" for a closing remix.

  5. Last Nite (6:04)
Review: Andy Riley and Laurence Ritchie return with something a little slower and more broken that we'd usually expect: "Shake" lives up to its name with sultry broken drums, a bulging warm bassline and all-round sense of midtempo sexiness while "Last Nite" spices up the punch a little with more of a shuffling jack, vocal loopery and just the right smidgeon of acid. Remixes come from Ben A (starlit deep house), Bohemia (stately jacks) and Mike Millrain (cosmic synths that wouldn't have gone amiss in Chicago 1989) Shake shake the room...

Review: Instinct's "Just A Feeling" is the pure embodiment of an early 90s Detroit techno record. Originally released in 1992 on Instinct's Decisive Records , not many copies managed to get outside of the city of Detroit. Within the melodic strings, 808s, and loosely swung samples - you can feel the spirit of these early days and of this young producer finding his sound. Meticulously remastered by Josh Bonati from the master tapes for this 2018 issue.

Common Places (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VR 005. Rel: 06 Aug 18
  1. Her Blissful Solitude
  2. Common Places
  3. Radiating Soul
  4. Her Nocturnal Note
Review: Verdant Recordings continues its quest to provide a space for lesser-known artists exploring the deepest pockets of electronic music, not least around the 4/4 axis. Next up on the label is the first public appearance from Interjection, a London-based artist who has been cooking up an immersive sound for some time. "Her Blissful Solitude" is a smoky deep house cut that drifts through heavy clouds of pads, while "Common Places" drops some brittle electro rhythms into the mix without lifting the veil of ambience. "Radiating Soul" has an equally intricate set of rhythms at work, with extra notes of 303 sprinkled over the top, and "Her Nocturnal Note" finishes the EP off with a shimmering trip out to complement the A1.

Review: Prism Industrial Complex affiliate Intimacy delivers a quad of raw, physical house and jungle across two sides: the title track stands out with its Reinforced / Ibiza Records style jungle hedonism, "Memory Card" is a hurricane of atmospheres anchored by a bubblesome acid line while "Grid Projector" shimmers with dubby synths but maintains focus and edge with it industrial rhythmic elements. Muscular whistle-peppered warehouse brings the finale fire via "Decisions In Life". The (crisis) force is strong on this one.

  4. Don't Ask Me (5:21)
Review: After a pair of effective deep house stompers from Sebb Junior, the La Vie D'Artiste Music label touches down with its third instalment, this time from newcomer Introbeatz. The newcomer is clearly born to create house music, as "I Want You Now" slaps down a fat Chicago percussion backed by wonderful pianos keys, while "Soon Baby" flutters an off-kilter house groove over filtered-out disco waves - the illest! The flipside kicks off with Sebb Junior's remix of "I Want You Now", a driving house anthem with a killer vocal sample at the helm, while "Don't Ask Me" uses the trusty old 'dust-house' approach to swing its percussion into the mix. Badboy deep-house, right here!

Review: Lagaffe Tales is a record label based in Reykjavik, Iceland, established in 2012 by Jonbjorn Finnbogason & Viktor Birgisson. Following up some brilliant releases recently by the likes of Moony Me, Malouane and Ilo, we have Arsaell Thor Ingvason aka Intr0beatz (Something Else/Closer To Truth) with some rather lush grooves. The Crucial Catering EP features the dusty Money $ex influenced bliss of "Dumpin", the hypnotic deep house of "Mystery Ride" and the slo-mo boogie-down vibe of "Desco".

Review: Jenifa Mayanja continues on with her pursuit of spiritual deep house on her Bu-Maka Records imprint. This time by recruiting various artists in harmony with her labels mission statement. "Survive" by Introspective is all uplifting pads, sultry afro rhythms and restrained 303 squelch; sounds good enough right? Next up is "Double Thinking" by Berlin's Jay Mond, who goes for more of a Detroit, high tech soul exploration. On the flip we have "Track 3" by Sean Bird providing another raw and tight, yet smooth deep house cut. Finally "Dove Tales" by Wallflower channels the dreamy, early nineties aesthetic of Larry Heard.

Review: The revered Halal Prepared series on boe extends to its fourth volume with four new acts fresh to the label. Hotly tipped duo, Invisible Menders, made up of outstanding DJ Jane Fitz and thus far underrated producer Dom Ahtuam contribute a stunning Balearic bass-heavy house cut "Fifth Time Lucky". Fresh from his solo EP, John Shima slots in a deep techno workout "Thought Wave". Toby Tobias of Rekids fame pumps out some raw basement lofi vibes with his jacker "Sword Art Arcade" and rounding off the EP on a delicate note is Tim Smith's soft and melodic 707 jam "Graphene".

Review: German house abstractionist Isolee makes a welcome return, surfacing on Pampa with his first new material since dropping his album Well Spent Youth on Koze's label back in 2011. Creative batteries recharged, Isolee is in familiar form on the three track Allowance 12"; the title track adopts his trademark bare bone approach with soothing lines of melodic intoxicants gently pulsing with intent over the soft edged house groove. This hypnotic opener hogs the A Side, leaving the chiming minimalist rhythmics of "You Could Do Your Memories" to duel for your attentions with the far too playful "Wobble".

Review: When the IT first started releasing music over 30 years ago, the project was a collaboration between legendary producer Larry Heard and singer/songwriter Harry Dennis. With Heard no longer involved, it has fallen to the equally legendary Ron Trent to produce this fine EP. Dennis is in fine form on the title track, speaking and singing over an ultra-deep and sensuous backing track rich in bubbly synth lines, dreamy chords and spacey electronics. Over on the B-side, Trent and Dennis dip the tempo on the blissful warmth of "Monterey (Album Version)" - all undulating synth bass, cascading pianos and conga-rich percussion - before showcasing their piano playing via the impeccable late night deep house loveliness that is "Aquatic Movement 1".

  3. Track 3
Review: Semi mysterious crew Italojohnson return for a seventh round of limited vinyl only action and it's hard not to get immediately caught up in the tough Kenny Dope style DJ tool of the A Side hugger. There's just something about the drums that come kicking in that grabs your attention amidst the current deluge of cookie cutter deepness, and the eventual drop into the bassline is sublime. Switch down to 33 on the flip and the first of two more untitled cuts is equally unabashed in its intentions as a DJ tool, pairing crisp hi hats with thick bass drums and fidgeting stabs whilst the second cut begins in a swampier place and highlights Italojohnson's capacity to tease out a vocal sample.

Cat: ITJ 10. Rel: 18 Apr 16

  2. Track 2 (6:49)
Review: Italojohnson has clearly decided that less is more, having limited their output to one self-released 12" a year since 2013. Volume 10 in the mysterious threesome's self-titled series predictably contains more twisted, tried-and-tested material. The untitled A-side sounds like a modern update of a breakbeat-boasting Frankie Bones classic, with hectic bursts of percussion, surging sub and a classic riff taking it in turns to impress. There's more of an acid house feel to the similarly untitled flipside workout, with booming, mangled vocal snippets and sharp electronic stabs riding a thunderous groove, '80s electro hits and a classic Chicago bassline. There's little subtle about either track, but they sound like guaranteed floorfillers.

Review: Since debuting last year, J. Albert has showcased his brand of hard-to-pigeonhole dance music on an impressive array of imprints (Lovers Rock, Black Opal and Cult Trip included). Here, the Exotic Dance co-founder pops up on 1080p, treating fans of the Vancouver institution to a quartet of ear-catching compositions. While there are a few fairly typical 1080p type cuts present (see the dreamy, breakbeat-driven deepness of "All In", and head-in-the-clouds broken house of "Strictly J"), it's arguably the most eccentric cuts that hit home hardest. Chief among these is opener "Pangs", which feels like pitched down jungle-jazz fused with horizontal deep house, though the bumpin'-but-ocean deep "For Soho" isn't far behind.

Leeds based producer J Cub follows up appearances on Eclectic Avenue and Saints & Sonnets with the woozy, trumpet soaked grooves of "Mestizo". UK cheeky house mainstay Lil Mark steps up with another quintessential shuffler in the form of "Small Syndrome", and then Moodymanc adopts his Dubble D alias for a smooth cruising trip through plush synths and warm bass.

  4. Freedom (Lukas remix)
Review: From the label: J Morrison smashed it with his debut track on Maximum Joy pt. 1, the highly addictive deep house cut 'Some Fella'. This mid tempo Afro-house track had that rare combination of being super deep - but with the power to rock any dance floor. The Freedom EP, J Morrison's first Full EP release is the same, and more. The lead track calls up a looped and filtered afrobeat sample that just keeps on giving. Reminiscent of Cottam's early work, and sure to be a hit in the sunshine of a festival stage or a dark club. "Stay High" is more driving, tribal, druggy affair that reminds us Peace Division in their prime. Late night heads down dance floor vibes, with a killer vocal sample that creates real magic. "Soft Play" is a deeper track and just like 'Some Fella' the arrangement and choice of samples merge create another floor friendly that will be a useful tool for a wide range of DJs. Alfresco Disco co-founder Lukas steps up for remix duties and flips the samples of Freedom for a more choppy, chicago style bumping house track - which rounds off the E.P rather nicely we think. We hope you think so too!

Another Way EP (repress) (limited hand-stamped 10")
Cat: MANUCCI 002. Rel: 01 May 14
  1. Road To Nowhere
  2. Brothers & Sisters
Review: **REPRESS** The Jack Fell Down duo made a considerable splash last year with releases on Southern Fried and Hometaping Is Killing Music and now they resurface in style with the Another Way EP. The second offering from new Sccucci Manucci offshoot, Manucci's Mistress, this 10" operation is a good home for the Jack Fell Down sound. Lead track "Road To Nowhere" displays a pensive melodic restraint that many of the new crop of house producers seem to overlook in their excitement to get productions from Ableton to Soundcloud. If the A Side sounds like Jack Fell Down holding back, then "Brothers & Sisters" could potentially have them sectioned, such is the crazed madness of the screaming vocals that intermittently punctuate the 90s rave stabs. Great fun.

Review: For their sixth release, Inner Shift Music are proud to present their second various artists compilation. It features four different tracks from different producers, each bringing their own unique yet interconnected sound to the EP.
You may have heard of Jacksonville already, from his superb track (Tokyo) for Atmospheric Existence, as well as releases on his own imprint Doppler records. Following him is the very talented Jose Lau of Deepselect Records from California, bringing with him his signature, warm, intelligent sound, who not surprisingly had a recent release on Pulp. Next is the mysterious duo Gauss, who you probably know about from their imprint of the same name. Their rather excellent track brings a more techy edge to the EP. To finalise the deal, we get a stunning, lush, melodic track from Marco Nega, who has also been seen on labels such as Bumako, UQ and AMR.

  2. Give Me A Reason (Michael Mayer Does The Amoeba remix) (6:54)
  3. Give Me A Reason (Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown - part 1) (9:42)
Review: After Australian band Jagwar Mar released their album entitled Every Now & Then in 2016, they now appear with an accompanying remix release for their fans. Under the direction of mastermind Jono Mar, the album was created after three years of intense worldwide touring, supporting such bands as The XX, Foals and Tame Impala. It fulfilled all the expectations of their 2013 debut Howlin'. "Ordinary" (Rebolledo Very Ordinary cut) is far from the description: this one's a great shuffling little number, with no shortage of laser zaps. "Give Me A Reason" (Michael Mayer Does The Amoeba remix) is without a doubt the real winner on here, where the Kompakt main man serves up another sublime and emotive exercise in life affirming dancefloor drama. On the flip, "Give Me A Reason" (Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown - part 1) sees the UK dance veteran deliver a lo-slung and definitely slo-mo take on acid-indie dance, as best as you'd expect from the man.

Review: The Eastern India-inspired Khasia Hills label is the brainchild of graphic designer Mornigradient and a quartet of producers, three of which (Jam For Real, Jus Jam and Kerstone) contribute cuts to the imprint's second outing. Up first is the ultra-dreamy but thrillingly bouncy "Maybe You Are" by Jam For Real, which manages to make use of both mind-altering analogue electronics and fluid piano solos. Newcomer Evolve doffs a cap to early Italian dream house on the tactile and groovy "Let's Drop", before Jus Jam delivers the melodious and jaunty deep house richness of "Midnight Special". Not to be outdone, label co-founder Kerstone takes us on a trip into deep space via the intergalactic chords, cascading synthesizer melodies and bubbling dub house beats of "New Season".

Massive dub techno chords collide with fractured rhythms and exotic vocal intonations on the excellent "Scotland Yard", while "Tadao" leans on hand-drummed percussion and stripped down deep house of a truly refined nature. "M Island" is a lead-heavy, subliminal stomper with plenty of low-end presence, and then "The Light Without Love" throws something of a curveball at the end with its comparatively uptempo machine rhythms and subtly euphoric nature.

Red Light (12")
Cat: ERK 002. Rel: 22 Jan 18
  1. Red Light (7:40)
  2. Red Light (dub mix) (6:30)
Review: Fresh from telling us to "Testify", Chicago's Jamie 3:26 and Amsterdam's Masalo collide once again for another absolute heater. Loopy, warm, soulful and charged with big organ blasts, this is less of a track and more of an instrumental hymn as strikes every side of you physically and mentally. Loaded with a dub mix for added deep mix pleasure. Being in the red has never felt so good.
