  1. Space & Time (unreleased re-edit)
  2. Prescription Every Night
Review: Running Back Records chief Gerd Janson has decided to revive a piece of dance history by reissuing Heaven & Earth's classic 1995 house offering. Back then, producers Luke Solomon, Rob Mello and Zaki D teamed to form a collective known as Heaven & Earth. Paying homage to their favourite label, Prescription Records who were putting out the deep, acid house that they loved from owners Chez Damier and Ron Trent, the trio collaborated on two original tracks - the now legendary "A Space and Time" and "Prescription Every Night".

The release blew up, turning the three London producers into household names overnight. - so much so that collective pronged off into their own solo careers. Such has been the demand for each, that a remix of "Beau Mot Plage" and Red Nail's "I Think of You" are the only times that they worked together again.

Fifteen years later, Gerd Janson secured the rights to re-issue the release and even loaded the EP with a couple of note worthy additions to entice record collectors to pick up a copy even if the original sits proudly in their record box. An unreleased edit of "Space and Time", where the piano takes on a more dubby feel, is joined by the disco tinged "Prescription Every Night", immortalized in Carl Craig's infamous 1995 Essential Mix.

This re-mastered and re-shaped EP is an original slice of the disco-house sound that has become so fashionable of late. As dance culture becomes more and more reflective, it is testament to the classic early tracks that inspired a generation that they are picked up again fifteen years later and re-issued for a new generation to treasure and cherish

Review: Still flexing a sexy synth tan from his excursion to Neon Beach this time last year, the mysterious Barry Helafonte returns to Arcane with five more stunning grooves. "Base Unit" sets the scene with its vibrant synths and staccato beats before dropping straight into west coast la panpipe Tropicana on "Marina Funk". Elsewhere "In The Mood" is so warm you could spark your cigar from it; oozing soul in the plucked bass and swooning synths, it leads to more upbeat fair in the form of the Detroit-tuned electro boogie "Sparkling Mango" and a woozy dreamy finale in the wavey, melting tones of "Out In The Night". Hella dope.

  1. A6
  2. Bad Timing
  3. Recycle
  4. Cold Hands
  5. Close
Review: Manchester's meandyou collective have quite rightly garnered increasing amounts of praise in recent times, and principal among the reasons for that must surely be the presence of Herron. Also found working with Joy O as C/OR, Herron follows up the excellent 2015 EP The Night Garden with another brooding selection of leftfield techno offerings for those who like something a little different in their club 12". "A6" keeps the mood close and cloying with its ominous textures and pitched down vocal shards, while "Bad Timing" does wonders with a monolithic yet nimble bassline. "Recycle" brings a dustier deep house vibe to the record, while "Cold Hands" lays down warm and inviting synth lines shot through with a necessary strangeness before "Close" rounds the EP off with a disheveled tour through Workshop-esque 4/4 dynamics.

  1. The Voyage (8:13)
  2. Subsonic Interference (7:23)
Review: Since launching last year, Mint Condition has served up essential reissues of material from Iz & Diz (as remixed by Pepe Bradock), Circulation, Plez and Technosoul. Here they've dug up another in-demand and hard-to-find gem, Paul Hester's 1997 UK tech-house classic The Voyage. The EP has aged remarkably well, with A-side The Voyage offering a near perfect blend of heavy analogue bass, swirling pads and shuffling, late night grooves. Flipside "Subsonic Interference" is almost as good, with Hester making merry with bleep techno style sub-bass, bumping drums, and just the right amount of intergalactic electronics.

Review: Previously on Distant Hawaii, UK producer Tom Harris aka Hidden Spheres appears now on Lobster Theremin with four servings of his soothing, late night house. "It Ain't Easy" is a deep, jazzy and loungey joint, reminiscent of early Atjazz, as is the sexy and evocative "IshOnSax" featuring 'some of the most contagious saxophone ever laid to wax' courtesy of Ishmael. The B-side features the Moodymann-ish "The Feels", a raw house number full of heart warming pads, dusty rhythms and soulful vocals. Closing out the release is the melting pot of swirling sounds, field recordings and playful drum programming on "It's Gonna Last".

  1. State To State (4:27)
  2. Endless World (5:17)
  3. Shades Of Grey (4:27)
  4. Memory Alpha (6:02)
Review: Considered French label D3 Elements continues is carefully curated run with a new EP from Berlin based Italians, Hinode. Featuring four cuts of tough deep house, this sixth EP is another high grade affair that follows on from great efforts by Strong Souls and Brian Harden.

Hinode are Matteo Chisari & Mario Resta, a pair of accomplished DJs and producers that release on and run their own Science Fiction Recordings as well as 0Helena0. They have been active since 2013 and their robust sound has found favour with real heads and underground DJs alike.

Opener 'State to State' is a raw, punchy house track with jazzy chords injecting some real soul into the physical beats. Rasping synths and rainy melodies have a hint of the old school about them and ensure that dance floors will be in raptures. 'Endless World' is more spacious, with a drunken acid sounding bassline roaming beneath a nicely mechanical groove. It's one to make you stomp, and so is b-side opener 'Shades of Grey' with its bombastic, kicking drums, twinkling melodies and lazy chords. Despite being a sweat inducing house banger, plenty of warmth and musicality remains. Lastly, 'Memory Alpha' hurries along with muddled voices, icy hi hats and a flurry of rubbery kicks and squelchy acid stabs. It's beautifully authentic house music that takes subtle cues from the best of Chicago and Detroit and puts a unique Hinode spin on things.

Ranging from the blissful, Innervisions-esque house soundscapes of lead track 'Regenmacher', through the breezy, jazz-led groove of 'Adhs' to the laidback funk of 'The Cop', Nomina EP is a meticulously crafted EP from a producer at the top of his game. 1. Remember (Gnork remix) (7:47)
  2. Cosmos (Lauren Ritter remix) (7:11)
Review: Last year K7's more experimental 7K offshoot released Hior Chronik's Out Of The Dust, an atmospheric album that joined the dots between ambient, drone and neo-classical. While great to listen to, there were few dancefloor moments - hence this remix 12". On side A Hungarian retro-futurist Gnork has his way with "Remember", wrapping Chronik's flotation tank chords, poignant strings and reverberating Clarinet lines around a bouncy rhythm track, rich sub-bass motifs and some particularly starry-eyed electronics. The results are spellbinding, sounding like a cross between 808 State's "Pacific" and Gnork's usually more robust fare. Lauren Ritter opts for a deeper take on "Cosmos", underpinning the inherent intergalactic vibes of Chronik's original elements with her own rolling deep house grooves.

  3. Hinode - "Vision"
  4. Region - "Cosmic"
Review: Jaunt Records' 10 year celebrations are spanning a series of 12"s that feature a broad spectrum of artists searching for the ultimate deep techno fix. The four contenders that occupy this Sea release all have their own agenda, but they sit together perfectly. Hiver weaves illustrious pads in between nimble electro drums and bubbling acid bass, while Artefakt creates eerie, fractured acid meanderings to send a shiver down your spine. Hinode does some deft break choppage to create a dreamy trip for the up all night crew, and then Region rolls the record out on an emotive tip while keeping the rhythm section pumped up for the floor.

  4. Raw Intuition (5:30)
Review: Seriously underground minimal house on offer here from Chicago's Hakim Murphy under a new alias. "Kallabo" is the kind of mysterious, candle lit deep house you'd hear on a Giegling record. "Porta" shuffles and bleeps in a more uptempo outing where you can hear the noise of tape in the background, competing with the hiss of the 808 hats to stunning effect. "Boops" bring the funk in this reductionist house jam for analogue freaks. Finally "Raw Intuition" stomps away with its brutal modular synth bassline run through a delay and knocking down everything in sight! Highly recommended!

Review: There's something wonderfully hazy and fluid about this debut album from German producer Hodini. Built around a combination of unapologetically blazed instrumental hip-hop, Moodymann influences, and the sort tumbling, swinging, sample heavy deep house promoted by Andres, Seven Davis Jr and others, M$03 sound tailor made for humid, lazy summer afternoons. There are collaborations with Glenn Astro and Max Graef, amongst others, and an overriding sense that Hodini is a producer on the rise. Grab a beer, slouch against the nearest tree, light up a jazz cigarette and get lost in the groove.

  1. African Drug (7:51)
  2. African Drug (Joaquin Joe Claussell Hallucination version) (8:19)
Review: Long before the rise in interest in African music, British electronica producer Bob Holyroyd was making tracks rich in traditional instrumentation. "African Drug" is, undoubtedly, the most famous of these. Originally released as a single in 1994, the intensely melodious, Steve Reich-esque work has been remixed numerous times over the years. This latest edition arrives on Joaquin "Joe" Clausell's Sacred Rhythm label, with profits going to charities that work to save Africa's endangered Rhino. The A-side contains a freshly mixed and re-mastered version of Holroyd's brilliant original - which brilliantly increases in intensity with the addition of tribal drums two thirds of the way through - with a more percussive, pleasingly hallucinogenic Clausell remix on the flip. In a word: essential.

Review: Amonst ambient house and deep techno aficionados, Holy Ghost Inc's 1990 cut "Walk On Air" has long been considered something of an early morning classic - a fact that helps explain the high online prices of second hand copies. This essential reissue accompanies the peerless "Sun and Moon Mix" - think early Orb style ambient electronics, Larry Heard dynamics, gently undulating grooves and Italian dream house flourishes - with the throbbing, Pure Trance-era KLF inspired Amphibious Carbine Mix, and two previously unreleased dubs. These are worth the entrance price alone, with the delay-laden drum bursts, restless bongo rhythms and hazy vocal snatches of Unreleased Dub 1 just edging out the arpeggio-throb of Unreleased Dub 2 in the "best track" stakes.

With a bit of help from buddy Adam Semijanac on vocals, he delivers some smooth and emotive deep house on the Heart Is Where The Homeboy Is EP. Starting out with the dusty and Herbie Hancock-ish live jam "Livada" there's the funky "Decisions Ricochet" a loveable soul excursion featuring Bebe Na Vole's amazing vocals. On the flip "Bonbon" goes for some mellower loungey flavour and is perfect for that afterhour session back at yours, while "Kornati Sunsets" features some rich analogue synth tapestries and bongo drumming sounding like something off of Grace Jones' legendary Nightclubbing LP.

Review: Following the runaway success of her long-anticipated 2017 debut album, Honey Dijon returns to action via a feel-good, peak-time collaboration with storied Aussie vocalist Sam Sparro, who first rose to prominence in the late noughties following appearances on Basement Jaxx records. Sparro's trademark vocal naturally takes centre stage on the opening "Disco Version", a driving chunk of acid house/disco fusion that sounds like a summer anthem in waiting. The track's nagging TB-303 lines are naturally pushed to the fore on the darker Cosmic Energy Dub, while fellow Chicagoan Cratebug flips the script entirely on his flipside rubs. Choose between the deep house/disco fusion of the "Nova Remix" and the arguably superior "Supernova Remix", where twisted but funk-fuelled acid lines rise above a stripped-back groove.

Review: "Tominori Hosoya is the project of Japanese track-maker Tomi Chair and for the past years he's been on a steadfast journey in the land of soulful house. His most recent offering on MixxRecords entitled "Life Goes On EP" includes four tracks, three originals and one Brothers' Vibe remix. Starting off with "Over The Sadness", the first piece is a laid back groove with a solid bass backbone animated by classic house hi-hats. "Strategy Meeting" gets peppered with wobbly synths, giving the cut a seemly acid vibe against a steady percussive background. With "32-33 (One Decision)", Tominori delves into his tribal side; keeping the focus on exotic drum patterns. The dreamy synth melody provides a contrasting yet fitting backline. For his remix of "Strategy Meeting", Brothers' Vibe goes full force and turns the track into a peak time floor killer, with a hypnotic percussive line....a SOLID PROJECT for certain!!"

Review: Having made his name with a string of fine rework releases on the acclaimed Tugboat Edits imprint, Guillermo "Hotmood" Gonzalez makes his first appearance on Whiskey Disco. Disco De Los Muertos ("Disco of the dead", if our Spanish is up to scratch) is predictably full of cheeky dancefloor moments that should appeal to both house and disco DJs alike. Our pick of the bunch is probably the low-slung "Playing The Groove For An Hour", where fizzing synth stabs ride a ridiculously rubbery slap bass riff and rolling house groove. That said, the deeper and dreamier "The Camel" is rather good, while the horror-tinged Mexican funk-goes-house fare stretched across the A-side is both rock solid and highly playable.

Review: In their offshoot label's formative years, San Francisco sorts Honey Soundsystem largely stuck to offering up fairly experimental albums and cassette compilations. The recent release of Bezier's excellent "Mina (Everyone)" 12" seems to have signaled a newfound desire to release more obviously dancefloor-friendly material, albeit with obviously vintage influences. Jackie House's "Skydive" certainly fits into this category, offering a spacey, synth-wave influenced take on early Chicago house. It swings, jacks and pumps in all the right places, with the action focused around a killer bassline. Matrixxman delivers the flipside remix, turning the loose and cheery original into a dark storm of thunderous kick drums, woozy chords and late night techno intent.
