  1. Oscar Huang - "Heel N Toe" (5:03)
  2. Rhythm Phazer - "Light Fog" (5:01)
Review: Two sides, two flavours: Vanity Press continue their flipmode theme of the year with another double artist, double A 45 affair. LA's Oscar Huang takes us back to Chicago circa 86 with a lavish piano strutter that's designed to boost soirees to full on parties while Heidy and Vandi's Rhythm Phazer project plunges us deeper into the electronic cosmos with a shimmering slab of Silver City style space disco. Unabashed foundation timelessness.

Review: In original cassette form, Untitled by Huerco S was one of those astounding early releases that really brought the Opal Tapes label to wider attention. The NWAQ gone grubby sonics of the three track, 40 minute release were subsequently one of the first few Opal Tapes releases to get a vinyl edition, courtesy of our friends Boomkat and their Boomkat Editions label. If you were one of those who passed over the initial pressing last year and have been filled with an unquenchable sense of regret ever since then good news! A second pressing from Boomkat is here and listening back makes us wish for some all new produce from the New York-based producer. C'mon Huerco!

Review: Le Freund is a new Dutch imprint founded to release "warm, analogue music", and this is its debut release. It comes from fellow Amsterdam dweller Duke Hugh, whose 2016 debut album on Rhythm Section International was something of a dusty, jazz-flecked treat. He begins in typically confident fashion with the thrilling space boogie/broken beat fusion of "Movin On", before laying down some rich and colourful analogue deep house in the shape of "Poly Valence". On the flip you'll find the tactile, Chaos In The CBD style deep house jazziness of "DTO", and wonderfully loved-up remix of "Movin On" from Dutch scene veteran Awanto3.

  4. The Beat Goes (6:20)
Review: The Lumberjacks From Hell affiliated Hugo H is back after a lengthy hiatus. The Chicago DJ most known for being celebrity Jamie Foxx's DJ (appearing on his show The Foxxhole Radio on the Windy City's Sirius/XM 96) serves up three authentic acid jack tracks like only someone from Chi-town can. Any serious acid house fan would be frothing over these four jams, which respectfully and convincingly capture the sound aesthetic of the city's golden era in the late '80s: when Traxx and Phuture reigned supreme. From the signature glide and legato of that revered little silver box on A side cuts "In, Out & In" parts 1 & 2 respectively, the flip features the sultry late night deepness of "On To Another Time" before he's back to the jackathon again on the boompty and hypnotic shenanigans of "The Beat Goes".

  3. Open Up Your Eyes
Review: Gene Hunt is one of the few producers from the original wave of Trax Records signees that still flies the flag for Chicago house with as much gusto as when he started. This is his second trip out on Inner Shift Music, and it finds the US house veteran on impeccable form. "Kayla Dream" is a light, airy jacker defined by amorphous synth washes that match the mellow mood of the label. "Distant Voyage" is a truly standout track though, dealing in crooked rhythmic structures and channelling the techno side of Hunt's muse. "Open Up Your Eyes" maintains the introspective mood, but this time welcomes some soulful vocal turns into the adventurous, machine-powered landscape.

  4. Sforzando Joy
Review: HVL seems well thought of by many within the house and techno community, with labels queuing up to secure his services. Bizarre Realms marks his first appearance on Los Angeles' Hesperian Sound Division. It's an undeniably atmospheric affair, with the Georgian keen to show off his noted eye for detail. Check, for example, the spacey, Detroit deep house-goes-acid vibe of "Escape In Time", or the watery, deep space electronics and jazz-flecked rhythm of "Bizarre Realms". He's not afraid to doff a cap to techno, either, as both the deep and dubby "Sio", and the more ragged, mind-bending "Sforzando", so neatly prove.

The A side of the Cosmic Hum EP starts with two pieces of mesmerizing acid tracks and finishes with a smooth analog ambience. 1. Hyas - "Dat Music Freak"

  4. D-Nite - "Something About U"
Review: Belgian label House Running has been in operation for some time as a digital affair, but now they're cutting their releases on wax and giving them a physical presence in the field of discofied house music. Hyas is making his first appearance with the two jams on the A side, both of which re-mould classic disco burners as stomping modern day house cuts. "Dat Musik Freak" is a heated, looped up riot of a track, while "Le Gardien Du Tekos" gets just as fierce and funky, channeling a little Detroit pressure in the extravagant filter usage and gritty rhythm section. Chinau's "Awareness (Feeling Of House Music)" is a lighter affair for easy going times, and then D-Nite rounds things out with the breakbeat-powered balladry of "Something About U."

Beasts From Below (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: IMM 043. Rel: 03 May 16
  1. Underworld
  2. Immortal Melody
  3. Hydras Dance
Review: "HYDRAFUNK is an exciting Detroit Techno inspired collaboration between Immigrant Records owner and label manager Robin Porter and US analogue synth guru Mike Carr. The duo first collaborated back in 2002 releasing the 'Mental Stealth EP' on Immigrant, featuring the bassline and synth heavy 'Fathernature', a track that found it's way on 'Evil' Eddie Richard's Fabric 16 mix CD. Their debut three track EP, Beasts From Below, fuses the analogue aptitude of Mike Carr and Robin Porter's attention to sound frequency, arrangement detail and understanding of the dance floor, delivering an intoxicating peak time package of delight. "Underworld" is a deep journey of melodic synth work and chugging groove that travels into dark territories, complimented by uplifting percussion that builds into a peak time beast from the deep. On the flip, "Immortal Melody" delves even further into moody territory delivering a tantalising array of dreamy synths and jackin' old school percussion, that submerges into an abyss of texture before rising up into a dance floor banger. Closer "Hydra's Dance" is definitely not a token bonus track and is the most dance floor friendly cut; featuring Robin's knack for creating powerful basslines, unique vocals and Mike's ability to create depth and texture with his analogue synth programming."

  5. Tresberry (Tevo Howards Acid remix)
Review: Marcel Vogel's Intimate Friends label welcomes a newcomer to the fold, with Hypoleon displaying a warm and inviting take on outboard, leftfield, electronic soul with a wavey edge to it. The vocals on the original tracks have a haunting edge to them thanks to some hefty processing, but the power in the delivery is undeniable. The tracks meanwhile channel acid, electro and minimal wave in understated ways, played out with a live band dynamic that hooks you in from the start. Jon McMillion's remix of "Tresberry" turns the track into a simmering 4/4 jam for the warm up heads to get loose to, while Tevo Howard brings some of his signature boxy acid to bear down on the track.

Review: Taken from last year's maxi EP under his off-piste Oeil Cube guise, I Cube's supersized "XXXX" gets the treatment from Red Light Records' Abel on this special 45". Taking its already smouldering slow-n-low vibe and giving it even more a hypnotic deep plunge, it's a respectful twist that loses none of the original's Balearic charm. Flip for "Etire En Avant" an immaculate slice of previously unreleased loopy magic that was recorded straight to tape in 96 but still sounds like it's 2096. Cool as ever.

  4. Let's Move (Goshawk Raptor remix)
Review: Pressed For Time reaches its tenth release with the skillful tones of Russian maestro Mihail A. Popov in his I Gemin guise. The original tracks on this 12" show off Popov's musicality, with "It's About Trust" in particular revelling in fuzzy synth tones and laid back beats that place focus on jazzy keys and chord progressions. "Let's Move" keeps things equally slow and sexy, with a particularly rubbery bassline flirting with sampled brass and shiny chords. YSE leads the charge in terms of remixes, bringing a tightly wound garage swing to "It's About Trust" while Goshawk's "Raptor Remix" of "Let's Move" heads into a classic deep house terrain for the smooth groovers.

Review: Opilec Music is an Italian eclectic label founded in Turin by Gianluca Pandullo - mainly as a conduit for his beloved I-Robots project. His track from last year "Brother Man" gets a hypnotic makeover by current 'it' Israeli duo Red Axes. Their version gets some proper tunnel vision happening with its swirling gated synths, mellow percussion and liquid basslines beneath Tuscania's sultry vocals. On the flip, veteran Japanse producer Hiroshi Watanabe aka Kaito delivers another awe-inspiring impression of hi-tech soul with his remix - that is just as evocative and powerful as his previous work for the likes of Transmat and Ibadan.

  4. Veter (4:53)
Review: A decade after he made his debut on Hooj Choons' deep house offshoot Airtight, Ichisan continues to deliver sporadic releases of the highest quality. The Slovenian is on top form on "Megla", a four-track missive that marks his debut on the fast-rising Kanto label. He eases us in gently with the title track, a wonky but rolling affair built around dub disco bass, fluid electric piano solos and heady Hawaiian guitar flourishes, before reaching for the synthesizers on the bustling cosmic disco cheeriness of "Yassa". The fun continues on the flip, first via the ever rising, sun-bright synthesizer arpeggio lines and wavy atmosphere of Balearic disco workout "Planica", then via the Jonny Nash guitar siolos and dewy-eyed sunrise vibes of "Veter", which could be the EP's standout moment.

Review: It's been a while since we heard something fresh from Ike Release. The Chicago-based producer was on a productive roll through 2015, both solo and alongside Hakim Murphy in Innerspace Halflife, but now he breaks his silence with a sturdy two-tracker for Finale Sessions. As you would expect, gritty machine jams are the order of the day, but there's plenty of soul and mystery sprinkled atop the box beats to make for spellbinding results. Both "Tangerines" and "Tungsten" lurk in the lower registers of the tempo range, but there's a weight behind these productions that makes it far from mere warm-up fodder.

  2. Mr Marvin - "I Want You" (1993)
  3. Fuel - "Rigid" (1995)
Review: As the title suggests, this rather delayed 12" from Optimo Trax is "is all about the drums" and features a trio of DJ tools from across the 1990s that have been long term dancefloor weapons for label boss JD Twitch. Of most interest is A Side production "The Way Out Is The Way" by Illumination, an Anglo-Norse pairing of Nicholas Stilltoe and Per 'Mental Overdrive' Martinsen, which was originally released as a B-Side on Music Man back in 1998. Twitch has apparently been mistakenly playing his original version at 45rpm instead of its intended 33rpm, and it's been pressed on this sampler to be played at either speed. The apocalyptic drum cascades of "The Way Out Is The Way" are complemented by the snare happy "Rigid" by Fuel and a tribalish track from Mr. Marvin, originally released on R&S offshoot Global Cuts in 1993.

First up is iLO who plays the long game with a yearning and burning slice of deep house that starts out stripped and subtle before blossoming into a fully-fledged vocal delight. Review: A lot of Inigo Vontier's early material was confined to the digital realm, but now the Mexican DJ and producer is starting to get recognition on wax for his heady brew of old methods and a taste for the freakier end of the party spectrum. This 12" for Mexican label Calypso leads in with the strangely unsettling but strident "Wirikuta," before the snappy surge of tightly wound tech variation "Marakame" comes leaping into ear shot. "Maxa" marks out its own unique space with a heavy broken beat excursion, leaving it to Dreems to ruminate on "Wirikuta" for a closing remix.

Remixes come from Ben A (starlit deep house), Bohemia (stately jacks) and Mike Millrain (cosmic synths that wouldn't have gone amiss in Chicago 1989) Shake shake the room...

Originally released in 1992 on Instinct's Decisive Records , not many copies managed to get outside of the city of Detroit. Within the melodic strings, 808s, and loosely swung samples - you can feel the spirit of these early days and of this young producer finding his sound. Meticulously remastered by Josh Bonati from the master tapes for this 2018 issue.

Review: Verdant Recordings continues its quest to provide a space for lesser-known artists exploring the deepest pockets of electronic music, not least around the 4/4 axis. Next up on the label is the first public appearance from Interjection, a London-based artist who has been cooking up an immersive sound for some time. "Her Blissful Solitude" is a smoky deep house cut that drifts through heavy clouds of pads, while "Common Places" drops some brittle electro rhythms into the mix without lifting the veil of ambience. "Radiating Soul" has an equally intricate set of rhythms at work, with extra notes of 303 sprinkled over the top, and "Her Nocturnal Note" finishes the EP off with a shimmering trip out to complement the A1.

Review: Prism Industrial Complex affiliate Intimacy delivers a quad of raw, physical house and jungle across two sides: the title track stands out with its Reinforced / Ibiza Records style jungle hedonism, "Memory Card" is a hurricane of atmospheres anchored by a bubblesome acid line while "Grid Projector" shimmers with dubby synths but maintains focus and edge with it industrial rhythmic elements. Muscular whistle-peppered warehouse brings the finale fire via "Decisions In Life". The (crisis) force is strong on this one.

Review: After a pair of effective deep house stompers from Sebb Junior, the La Vie D'Artiste Music label touches down with its third instalment, this time from newcomer Introbeatz. The newcomer is clearly born to create house music, as "I Want You Now" slaps down a fat Chicago percussion backed by wonderful pianos keys, while "Soon Baby" flutters an off-kilter house groove over filtered-out disco waves - the illest! The flipside kicks off with Sebb Junior's remix of "I Want You Now", a driving house anthem with a killer vocal sample at the helm, while "Don't Ask Me" uses the trusty old 'dust-house' approach to swing its percussion into the mix. Badboy deep-house, right here!
