Review: Junktion, Daniel Leseman and Kristoffer Ljunberg's Outplay imprint has been going strong for a couple of years now and the label heads have started branching out to new talent after each one of them put in an appearance early on. The dudes have picked up the up and coming Loz Goddard who comes through correct with four discofied floor cuts on the deep house side of things. Luscious basslines, gorgeous keys and intricate vocal chops make for an effective collection of tracks. Our pick is certainly "Monkey Tears" thanks to its jazzed-out vibes and rattling mass of kick drums...check "Move It On" for that French filter house sound, too!

  3. Murmur (6:44)
Review: 2016 was Loz Goddard's year, without doubt. The talented Mancunian delivered a trio of fine EPs for Dirt Crew, Quintessentials and Razor 'N' Tape Reserve, in the process significantly enhancing his reputation. Happily, his first release of 2017, which also marks his return to Outplay after a two-year absence, is also rather good. Check, in particular, A-side cut "Hazy", a groovy, disco-influenced deep house roller full of swinging drum fills, twinkling keys and swirling samples. He's in immaculate, Larry Heard-meets-early St Germain mode on B-side leader "Peaches", then pays tribute to lazy, sun-kissed afternoons on effortlessly Balearic, jazz-funk influenced deep house closer "Murmur".

  4. Fornix (7:13)
Review: The latest tidy deep house 12" from West Australia's consistent Red Ember Records is the work of producer Pablo Arrangoiz. It's his debut release and as first attempts go, it's pretty tidy. Rich in analogue hardware manipulation and jaunty, jammed-out musical elements, there's more than a little jazz influence amongst the undulating synthesizer basslines and fluid machine percussion. In terms of highlights, we're particularly enjoying the deep, dreamy and bass-heavy electro/deep house fusion of "Formix" and "3MV", though the skewed analogue jazz-house of "Tortilla Flat" and "Sifting" is also tickling our tummies, too.

  3. 1000 Memories (feat Sio) (6:54)
  4. Broken Tamagotchi (feat Daev Martian) (6:36)
Review: South African DJ and producer Julian Gomes returns on Atjazz's eponymous imprint. Late Dreamer is his second album for the label and like most of his releases sees him in collaboration with Martin Iveson himself. This EP released for Record Store Day 2017 takes a selection of cuts from the album, especially for the occasion. "Somewhere" is the kind of evocative hi-tech soul that reaches the same depths of Boddhi Stava, while it's real proper deep stuff on the wonderfully lush and addictive "Nothing Can Break Us" featuring Ziyon's powerful vocals. Elsewhere, there's some grooves of the dreamier and dustier variety on the flip, particularly on the wonderful "Broken Tamagotchi" featuring Daev Martian.

  4. The Verticals - "Jersey Jam" (6:11)
Review: Gents & Dandy's started out as a digital-only label back in 2014, but they've started releasing their sounds up on vinyl as of late. This four-track collaboration kicks off with Doug Gomez and the wavey deep house tones of "Lord Give My Strength", an excellent little house gem in a Chicago kinda vibe, followed by the even deeper sways and warm swarms of sonics on Kojam's "Situations". Roman Muhlschlegel sticks to the deep end of the spectrum on "Dein Freund Die Bohne", a placid yet uplifting bundle of house beats, and The Verticals ties things off with the more classic, piano-led arrangements of the warm and delicious "Jersey Jam".

  2. Tominori Hosoya - "Strider Practice"
  3. Allstarr Motomusic - "Pulsate"
  4. Manuel Costela - "Mind Purveyor"
Review: Spanish label Bucketround kicks off a new series called Deep Encounters with this four-track various artists release from some lesser known talents with some seriously fresh ideas. Jesus Gonsev taps into the mood of labels like Pleasure Zone and the stripped down Romanian sound, but there's other forces at work in the meditative bliss of "Terminal 5". Tominori Hosoya takes things in the direction of Dubbymann style deep house, all pattering bongos and sweeping melodic content before Allstar Motomusic brings a tougher, old-skool New York approach to steamy house music. Manuel Costela finishes the EP off with the delicately balanced "Mind Purveyor", holding back on the drums and leading with the chords instead.

Review: Fresh from fine recent outings on Lovedancing and Quintessentials, rising star Felipe Gordon releases his first EP on Toy Tonics, a label he's been loosely affiliated with since contributing a track to a compilation style EP last year. The centrepiece of the 12" is clearly "Acid Party at Tuesaquillo", a cut that cleverly combines classic deep house elements (woozy chords, spine-tingling pianos) with the jacking rhythms and mind-altering acid lines of early Chicago house. While the track arguably didn't need remixing, we're rather enjoying the deeper, jazzier interpretation from Retrogott and DJ Qualle, not to mention the enveloping warmth of Seb Wildblood's Detroit Techno-meets-deep house rework.

Review: Sleazy McQueen's Lovedancing is back with Colombia's Felipe Gordon who has appeared previously on top labels such as Quintessentials, Toy Tonics and S3A. Seriously lo-slung disco deviance awaits you on The Glory EP: from the looped-up and dusted down title track and the smooth, Rhodes-led deepness of "Nebiancater". On the flip, get into the groove in slo-mo style on the irresistible "Mara" until he saves the best for last on "The Juno Experience" - mind you, we could be biased. No, seriously: this neon-lit, boogie-down jam for the late night sounds like a familiar classic (as we're sure you'll agree) and is bound to get bums wiggling on the dancefloor guaranteed.

  3. 88 Keys
  4. I Live For The Love You Give
Review: Rhythm Plate vet Matt Hunt is back with his Goshawk alias and the snappily titled Double House & Triple Garage EP, kicking off with the warm and steady grooving deep house of "Down In Brooklyn". "Both Sides Buttered" is a cheekier affair that flirts with splashes of sassy organ chords and finger clicks to die for, but things get serious once more with the soul-drenched "88 Keys", which features an undisclosed number of melodic piano and Rhodes parts twirling in bluesy harmony. "I Live For The Love You Give" finishes the EP off with a sharp jack in its step and a heartfelt vocal lift to drill some raw emotion into your no-nonsense heads-down house session.

  4. My Business Ain't Your Business (6:36)
Review: The Rhythm Plate posse are certainly no strangers to Hudd Traxx, and so it makes perfect sense to see their Goshawk project landing on the long-serving Northern deep house label. The vibes are impeccable on this 12" from start to finish, not least with the soulful sway of "My Heart" bolstered by Astral T's vocals. "High In The Evergreens" meanwhile takes a woozy approach to straight up house music with its dreamy synth tones, and "Yes In This Way" turns up the pressure with a killer bassline and feverish gospel preacher vocal hooks. "My Business Ain't Your Business" takes a more laid back, choppy approach to the groove without losing any of that all important soul.

  3. The Love Is Gone
  4. The Dub Is Gone
Review: That Hudd Traxx powerhouse keeps on pumping out the jams, with regular Hudd hood Goshawk back in the saddle with some of his most assured beats to date. "Get Up To Get Down" channels a limber, Prince indebted funk, straps it to a simmering house beat and then drafts Erik Rico in for a killer vocal that takes you right back to the best of '90s vocal house. Then Art Of Tones jumps on for a remix that beefs the original up with some more big room elements, as one might well expect from the French titan. "The Love Is Gone" gets into a spaced out disco house frame of mind, which "The Dub Is Gone" then shuffles up into a slinky little groover.

  1. Goshawk - "Take You Home"
  2. Tatsu - "Walk Away"
  3. Tim Tonal - "Love What U Feel"
  4. Leon Revol - "Tape Loop"
Review: Four tracks, four producers. One label regular, three new recruits. Four different takes on the deep house sound that we know and love here at PFT. Label regular/boss Goshawk kicks things off with the dubby slo-mo house grooves of 'Take You Home' which has a raw hypnotic disco inflected groove complete with chopped up vocals. Serious biznizz. Tatsu (aka DJ Isaac Indart from the Puro crew in Palma, Mallorca) offers up the bumping deep vibes on 'Walk Away' - think snapping snares, square wave basslines and sunkissed pads. WARM. Tim Tonal is most notably known for being part of the Alphadogs, whose incredible 'Bonelicker EP' on DIY is an all-time free party classic. He supplies another sure fire party starter with 'Love What U Feel', Nottingham soundsystem house at it's finest Finally, coming straight out of Bordeaux is Leon Revol (Apersonal) with the sublime 'Tape Loop' - a rolling, locked in groove with a fantastic arrangement which keeps the groove interesting throughout.

Review: Berlin-based Korean Peggy Gou has been surprisingly quiet since first bursting onto the scene back in 2016. Here, she returns to action having graduated from Technicolour to parent label Ninja Tune. Many may already have heard EP standout "It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)", a percussively ambidextrous beast based around a bouncy, off-skilter, snare-heavy rhythm track. It has been much discussed online after Gou included it her recent Resident Advisor podcast. On the B-side you'll find tracks representative of her developing style, which draws together elements of European deep house, electro, early '90s U.S house, the rubbery disco eccentricity of Maurice Fulton and the instinctive polyrhythms more often found in traditional African music.

  1. Day Without Yesterday (5:40)
  2. Six O Six (6:11)
Review: Originally from South Korea but moving to London at the age of 14 where she spent her formative years, Peggy Gou has since moved to Berlin (of course!) where she's since made her break releasing two EPs in less than a year on Matt Edwards esteemed Rekids imprint. Her new one on Phonica white sees her explore classic deep house aesthetics convincingly such as on the dusty MPC bashing Moodymann style deepness of "Day Without Yesterday" with its deep funk bass, emotive strings and woozy sample all working in perfect harmony. But "Six O Six" gets a craving for the acid life with some gnarly 303 lines going head to head with hands in the air vocals and rusty drum machine grooves.

  1. Peggy Gou - "Shero"
  2. Juju & Jordash - "Throwdown"
Review: The reach of not-for-profit label Needs continues to impress as they link up with Peggy Gou and Juju & Jordash in a collaboration with UN Women for an expertly curated 12" of interstellar sonics strapped to a 4/4 beat. Gou is on typically strident form on "Shero," presenting her keen instinct for 90s house and more fluttering, psychotropic tones distilled into dancefloor manna as intriguing as it is easy on the ears. Juju & Jordash meanwhile channel their own learned approach to live jam improvisation into a true trance-out of strafing arpeggios and spongy FX for the trip-out crew to get lost in.

  3. My So-Called Friends (Fred P reshape)
Review: With just one former appearance on a collaborative release for 8Bit, Michael Gracioppo gets snapped up by MCDE for a pair of decidedly oddball offerings with as much indie-pop and soul woven into the tracks as anything electronic. "My So-Called Friend" lolls around a vocal theme that sounds as though it could belong to The Flaming Lips school of songwriting, while a fidgety micro-beat and LFOing chords make up the musical construction. "Untitled" meanwhile pitches down a mournful croon to come on like Isaac Hayes while a snappy and detailed steppy rhythm pulses out underneath and bird noises tweet around the mix. Fred P brings a touch of focus to the first track with his remix, but still manages to keep the wayward spirit of the vocal intact.

  5. Bumds (2:16)
Review: Over the course of his career, Max Graef has proved to be rather adaptable, variously turning his hand to dusty deep house, revivalist jazz-funk, drowsy hip-hop beats and nu-jazz. On this EP he touches on many of those styles, but it's the angular, techno-influenced analogue electronics, Motor City chords and shuffling beats of opener "Thrillhouse & Bonus Beat" that really sets the pulse racing. Graef's obsession with raw, lo-fi sounds is further explored on "2 Cool 4 U", which sounds like a cross between tropical house, early UK bleep and wayward techno, while closer "Bunds" sees him wrap deep space electronics around a sparse, pitched-up, high-register drum machine beat. As for the rest of the EP, it's deep, dusty, jazzy and really rather good.

Review: OYE crew and Berlin purveyors of dusty, hip-hop inspired deep house make their major label debut for Ninja Tune and good on them. It really is their time at present, what with their Money $ex and Box Aus Holz imprints going from strength to strength. "Magic Johnson" inspires the greatness of the song's namesake. All dusty jazz breaks, dreamy rhodes and xylophones and whirring organs are the perfect soundtrack for a Sunday stroll through Prenzlauer Berg after a night of clubbing on no sleep, finishing off in Mauerpark for falafel and record digging. Want something moodier and sleeker? The pair are on hand with the dubbed up "Tape Johnson" take on the B Side.

Review: Grant was first brought into the ever-expanding Lobster Theremin family late last year following the release of his rock solid Crank album on label offshoot Mork. Here he graduates to the main label via an EP of spacey analogue house positivity. Opener "Feeling (Vocal Mix)" is our pick, sounding not unlike a dreamier contemporary update of Ernest St Laurent's deep house classic "Clumsy Lobster". That said, there's plenty of treats tucked away elsewhere on the EP, including the thrusting, dub-flecked late night hypnotism of "Values" and the fluttering, analogue-rich sunrise house of closer "No Lights".

Review: American lo-fi house champion Grant is back with the fourth edition of his eponymous imprint. There's a familiar anthemic loop accompanying the moody acid groove of "Spiritual Path". The beats get broken up next, but the track is still in spiritually emotive fashion on the lush "Mediate" while the flipside features more soulful and reflective moments for late night dancefloors. In particular, the sensual "The Other Man" or the ultra deep and dub inflected mood lighting of "Capital Road" somewhat reminiscent of his tremendous work on last year's No Lights EP for Lobster Theremin - one of last year's favourites! Following up his brilliant Perception LP last year on Duke's Distribution, Grant retains his winning streak.

  1. Ravejavik (8:30)
  2. Downton Abbey Trax (4:17)
  3. Hidden Agenda (6:17)
  4. Matrix Wave (4:44)
Review: Alan Arbelaez makes his first outing on vinyl, launching the Keepers Of The Wild label with a forthright selection of rave minded goodies pitched at the darker side of the dance. "Ravejavik" revolves around terse breakbeats and uneasy DX7 keys, making for a most intense of club workouts pitched at an even tempo. "Downton Abbey Trax" equally keeps the tempo slow and deadly as a hailstorm of rave tropes meet with emotive string samples, while "Hidden Agenda" explores paranoid house with pan pipe leads flown in over the top. The release rounds off with "Matrix Wave", a more meditative, dubstep flavoured cut showing another side to this emergent artist.

  3. Do You Wanna Know (Flipside mix) (4:12)
  4. About You (Samplamind) (5:57)
  5. Love (Beatdown part 2) (5:20)
Review: Detroit producer Jason Grove has long been one of Skylax's most reliable artists, with his numerous albums and singles amongst the strongest releases in the label's back catalogue. Predictably, he's in fine form on this first 12" for three years. Both "Without U" and "Just Try (88-89 Tribute)" are deep, quietly soulful and classic in tone, showcasing sounds that reference vintage Larry Heard productions, Inner City and Motor City futurism. Those looking for a warmer, richer and groovier vibe should check "Do You Wanna Know (Flipside Mix)" (which also boasts a thrillingly heavy analogue bassline) or the New Jersey garage-inspired deep house positivity of "About You (Samplamind)" and dreamy, breakbeat-boasting "Love (Beatdown Part 2)".
