Strange But Not Forgotten (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FS 026. Rel: 26 May 15
  1. Feeling Strange (6:16)
  2. Forget The Peak (6:28)
  3. Defeated (9:00)
Review: We at Finale Sessions are glad to have Grey People aka Alex Michalski raining from Chicago he is one of the new up and coming producers from the windy city that has flavor that Finale Sessions really likes and we present you with his first track called "Feeling Strange" with its weird but funky bassline and its dark synths gives it a peak time feel with its spooky chords that sets this track apart from the rest, Then we have the track called " Defeated"which really has this Depeche Mode feel with its wicked bassline and its solid claps but we also dig the pads and synths also. Then last but not least is the track " Forget The Peak" is my favorite track of the ep its solid chords and pads give this track a melodic feel and very dancefloor friendly vibe ..We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your on going support of Finale Sessions ....We Love You

  5. Love (Beatdown part 2) (5:20)
Review: Detroit producer Jason Grove has long been one of Skylax's most reliable artists, with his numerous albums and singles amongst the strongest releases in the label's back catalogue. Predictably, he's in fine form on this first 12" for three years. Both "Without U" and "Just Try (88-89 Tribute)" are deep, quietly soulful and classic in tone, showcasing sounds that reference vintage Larry Heard productions, Inner City and Motor City futurism. Those looking for a warmer, richer and groovier vibe should check "Do You Wanna Know (Flipside Mix)" (which also boasts a thrillingly heavy analogue bassline) or the New Jersey garage-inspired deep house positivity of "About You (Samplamind)" and dreamy, breakbeat-boasting "Love (Beatdown Part 2)".

  1. Battery Acid (7:11)
  2. Mr. Heard (6:41)
  3. Battery Acid (dub edit) (6:48)
Review: Few house producers are quite as prolific as Glenn Underground. Since launching his career way back in 1992, the Windy City legend has released well over a century of 12" singles. Savior of Chicago is his sixth E.P this year alone, and begins with the snappy drum machine handclaps, psychedelic TB-303 lines and gently dreamy chords of peak-time thumper "Battery Acid". He pays tribute to old friend and fellow Chi-town legend Larry Heard on the deep, melodious and evocative "Mr Heard", before once again diving into Phuture territory with a rugged, wild and full-throttle Dub Edit of opener "Battery Acid". While he rarely fails to impress, Savior of Chicago is undoubtedly GU's most club-ready 12" for some time.

  1. Spank N Gallop (7:56)
  2. Peaceful Rage (Acid Revenge) (8:16)
Review: Glenn Crocker seems to have rediscovered the simple, mind-altering pleasures of Roland's iconic TB-303 bass synthesizer. On another 12" out this week, 808 Sessions, the veteran Chicagoan wrapped wiggly acid lines around electro-influenced drums and his usual rich deep house musicality. Here, he's gone one step further, delivering a pair of twisted, intoxicating acid jams that look to Phuture for inspiration. A-side "Spank N Gallop" sets the tone, with Crocker supplementing a killer acid line with notably jazzy cymbal hits, drum machine tom-toms and occasional spacey chords. The deep space vibe is explored in greater detail on flipside "Peaceful Rage (Acid Revenge)", where intergalactic chords and bubbly electronics get equal billing with a psychedelic TB-303 riff.

Review: Paris based label Beat X Changers have been around since 2011 and the group is based on the common will of its followers: a spontaneous, synergic and eclectic approach to electronic music. They now present the debut by Guber - a release that stands at the intersection of ambient and UK bass. He merges all of his influences, past and present, on this release: from 70's rock and trash-metal through to UK electronic music. Since he is 'only focusing on spontaneous creativity and showing faithful perceptions of his thoughts', get ready for the emotive low end expressions of "Quantum Confinement", the slow motion tribal groove of "Work Hardening" (Tleh mix) and the sci-fi futurism of "Plasticity". Most of all, bear witness to a talented young producer that shows great promise in 2018 and beyond.

  1. Into The Woods (feat Cecilia Bruun Hansen)
  2. Lilith Of The Night
  3. Fallen Angel
  4. Ray Of Sunshine
Review: After making a debut on Concrete Music last year with The Black Dahlia EP, Amir Alexander's Guerrilla Soul! side-project returns on Vanguard Sound! with a rich and vibrant four-tracker that further expands on the eclectic shades of house music the Chicago-based producer is tapping into. The A side features two tracks with unusual fairy tale lyrics spoken over brooding beats, with "Into The Woods" coming on subtle and sinister while "Lilith Of The Night" packs a bit more dirt and bounce. "Fallen Angel" on the flip is a more soulful turn with melancholic overtones, and "Ray Of Sunshine" opts for a jazzy line in lead synths and some guttural bass to provide a diversion for the end of the EP.

Review: Leo Gunn is an artist that has been truly dedicated to the cause of Deep Explorer. To date all the artist's music has come to light on Dubbyman's bastion of Spanish deep house, and it's no wonder when you listen to the illustrious tones of his productions. Ahead of a new album, this 7" of mystery and wonder starts off in the utterly enchanting world of "Voodoo", a spaced out lullaby of expressive pads and the softest house tick buffeting along the aqueous sounds. There's a slight change of mood on the flip as "Moondub" lives up to its name with a spacious soundworld marked out by echoing piano notes and a rock solid bassline, but still that inimitable Deep Explorer mood prevails.

  1. I Think I Need You In My Life (4:49)
  2. Swept Under (5:52)
  3. The Epic Comedown (6:11)
Review: More from man of mystery Guy Incognito, a producer who's chosen alias is borrowed from an obscure character in the Simpsons. This 12" is marked out by his use of distorted, redlined vocal samples, snappy beats and some of the dreamiest pads and synthesizer melodies known to man, woman or beast. We're particularly taken by the snappy, snare heavy drums, echoing male vocal samples and dewy-eyed pads of A-side "I Think You In My Life", though the cosmic trip that is "Swept Under" - all tough, locked-in beats, tipsy elongated chords and whispered spoken word vocals - pushes it close. As for "The Epic Comedown", it's a far more pleasant, deep and life-affirming experience than the title suggests (helped in no small part by the presence of what sounds like sampled Nina Simone vocals).

  3. Then Again, Maybe Not (6:01)
Review: Having graced an impressive roster of labels in recent years - think Church and Cin Cin, for starters - Laurence Guy pitches up on Mule Musiq for the first time. Happily, the three tracks on display are amongst his strongest works to date. We're particularly enjoying A-side "All I See Is Her", where heart-aching, bluesy piano motifs, simmering clarinet lines and eyes-closed vocal samples stretch out lazily over a bumping, breakbeat-driven house groove. Guy's love of warm and relaxing piano sounds comes to the fore once more on twinkling, broken deep house gem "Belong", while closer "Then Again Maybe Not" sits somewhere between vintage jazz-house and the smoky, dust-encrusted goodness of FYI Chris and Folamour.

Review: Church has certainly grown into one of London's most dependable house music outlets these past few years across their various interlinked label divisions. The emergence of Laurence Guy is testament to that - last year he debuted on Church with the well-received Kojak EP, and has gone on to prove his worth across a number of 12" releases and V/A contributions. Bamboo sees him back in the Church fold for their ninth White Label release and it's a confident four-track display of measured deep house. From the warbling melodies of the title track to the Smallville stylings of "Knotweed" and "Lotus", Guy is clearly improving with each release!

  3. Junktion - "Breakfast At Midnight" (5:19)
  4. Daniel Leseman - "On My Mind" (6:15)
Review: Hans Peeman (Junktion) and Daniel Leseman's Outplay is strictly committed to spreading the gospel of deep house music and this sermon comes courtesy of the aforementioned, with a bit of help from Laurence Guy. He appears first with the title track, which samples a pretty breathtaking strings section mixed with a spangling Derrick May style synth melody which fades out and gives way to a pretty wicked arpeggio... and some cowbells; sold already? Next up is Junktion with "Breakfast At Midnight" an offering of deep and dusty late night disco that certainly takes its cues from KDJ, but that's totally fine by us. The Brame & Hamo remix is more dancefloor friendly, slo-mo deep house that fans of Genius of Time or MCDE will appreciate. Finally Leseman's "On My Mind" offers us another deep and dusty house gem that revels in its beautifully sombre Motor City vibes. Not bad for a guy from Utrecht!

  4. Mutenoise - "Mystical Path" (5:41)
Review: Three Russians and a Brit inaugurate new imprint Minor Notes Recordings. According to the label, the A side is considered a 'bright side' with twilight feels and ideal for warm-up sessions. This features label boss Guydee with the neon-lit classic house of "Chronic Hey" and DJ/bass player Anton Lymarev aka Black Lenin with the funked up disco loops of "Summer Storm". Then, turn over for the 'dark side' to go deeper with your dancefloor courtesy of Darran Pownall with the ultra-deep and emotive late night groove of "Regrets" which has a modern lo-fi feel while at the same time channelling the early vibes of Windy City imprints like Alleviated. Finally, Siberian producer Mutenoise saves the best for last on the dubby and hypnotic affair "Mystical Path" calling to mind the work of Roger Gerressen or Samuel Andre Madsen. Solid gear across all four tracks and highly recommended.

  3. Lotche - "Tony!" (6:13)
  4. Basi - "Thousands Cats Island" (6:33)
Review: Oh boy, hold tight for another slice of Sure Cuts! The French imprint is kinda killing the tech house game at the moment, dipping and slicing its steely percussive muscles better than most of its contmeporaries, and this is especially true when they launch collavorative Eps such as this banger, right here! "Diggstyle" by GGZ opens with some wavy harmonies, soulful vocals and dusty drum swings, while Too Many Cars' "Nighty Part" goes for the disco feel thanks to mounds of seductive strings and sulry samples. On the flip, Lotche's "Tony!" is a much harder, more banging Chicago kinda burner, featuring heavy drums and a deep, funky bassline, which leaves "Thousands Cats Island" from Basi to sway us back into a relatively more minimalistic viewpoint. Magnetic and utterly tipped!

  4. Bound By Faith (instrumental mix) (6:52)
Review: Scott Fraser and Richard Sen launch a new project Hackney Vandal Patrol with this 12", tapping into their love of steamy US deep house from the early 90s. The mood is electric on "Bound By Faith", using a meandering vocal sample and organ keys over smoky jack beats and a throbbing bassline, while the "Bass Hit Mix" brings that pulsing low end to the front of the mix and strips everything but the beat back. The "Redemption Dub" strikes something of a balance between the two previous mixes, and then the "Instrumental" cuts the vocal but keeps the sweet and saucy organ line, so whichever bit of the track you like there's a mix for you.

Review: Cong Burn is a new label that features a range of producers plying a more interesting twist on the standard deep house formula. Take opening case in point Haddon, who uses oodles of processing to create a slippery, shifting tripper out of "Not Coming To The Club" and instantly stepping aside from the run of the mill milieu. Howes then pops up with the snaking, ultra-deep electro abstractions of "Untitled". L Pearson is in a particularly cheeky mood with the scratchy micro-sampling fun of "PSR1170", calling to mind the crafty chops of Paradroid et al, and then Perfume Advert book end the release with some beautifully horizontal deep house for the subliminally minded to revel in.

  4. Literate (Tiago Team Fumo remix)
Review: Not An Animal Records was formed in 2015 out of the ashes of the London-based party Bad Passion, and has thus far welcomed the likes of Man Power, Ess O Ess and Eric Duncan to release on the label. Now they turn to James Hadfield, a relatively new producer previously spotted on To Rack & Ruin and Me Me Me. On this four-tracker he deals in brooding synthwave tones mixed with classic jack track rhythms. "Literate" is just the kind of taut, sinister club creeper we can't get enough of, while "Buried Answers" takes a skippier but no less moody approach. On the remix front, Jamie Blanco takes the prize, turning "Buried Answers" into a bombastic slice of driving synth pop.

Emboldened by this prospering creative vibe, Bossa Nova Civic Club have teamed up with Sisterjam, a local consultation, management and event promotion collective for a series of 12" EPs under the banner Bushwick Is Melting. This first volume features four tracks from Brooklyn-based producers, each reflecting a different side to the area's musical underground. L.I.E.S. artist Marcos Cabral contributes, as does his Runaway partner Jacques Renault who teams up with NYC techno veteran Mark Verbos, whilst there is also music from Mannequin Records act Dusk, and Aurora Halal, the person behind the Mutual Dreaming parties who makes her solo production debut with "Hazy G".

Review: Georgian producer Hamatsuki appeared on GASP last year with the Uncertain Loops cassette release, but makes his vinyl debut on this damn fine 12" for the recently minted Sensu label. "Remember" is a rich, undulating swirl of deep house laden with melancholic pads, while "Rett" sports a sunnier tone for its own arsenal of soft, rounded synth tones. DJ Sports comes on board for a remix of "Rett" that plays with said synths and creates springy, computer jazz melodic threads out of them. "Inexplainable Inner Sadness" completes the set with another trip into warm, Chicago-indebted house tones for the introspective dancer.

Review: Archie Hamilton is having a pretty good year, all told. Remarkably, this EP is his sixth of the year to date, following quietly confident appearances on Fuse London, Tied and Parliamnt. Impressively, there's a fair bit of variety to be found across the three tracks. Contrast, for example, the rolling tech-house/deep house fusion of opener "Confusion" - all tactile, looped riffs, rising acid lines and chunky beats - with the bouncy "Dos Equis", where woozy vocal samples ride an elastic, funk-fuelled bassline and locked-in beats. Arguably best of all, though, is flipside "Wild Thing" - a punchy late night workout full of trippy riffs, bustling bass, razor-sharp acid lines and jazzy-but-driving deep house beats.

Review: Fatdog Records returns after a break, offering contributions from 3 artists new to the label - The Rutan, Tom Mc Connell and Mark Hand. FDR003 offers a development from the deep house template on the last EP, this time taking us further into deeper Detroit territories. Mark Hand offers us Drexciyan techno in the form of 'Cold Feet'. The Rutan's 'Fable' sits somewhere between Vakula and some of Henrik Schwarz's earlier dub-house experiments, while Fat Dog takes us to the murky back alleys of his mind with 'Jaffa Cakes'. Finally Tom Mc.Connell's 'Juniper' takes us into wonkier groove Rhodes stylings which rounds off the EP very nicely indeed. Support by John Heckle, Afrikan Sciences, Lay-Far, Enrico (Neroli), Sonars Ghost (2000 Black), Burnski, Wolf Music

Review: A decade-long lunch is quite the time out! After lying dormant for some ten years, Out To Lunch returns with a new record from mystery production unit The Hangout Project. Overseen by Jens Kuhn, aka Lowtec, Out To Lunch was active between 1996 and 2005 and was seemingly put to bed soon after the Workshop label took flight. Kuhn's elected to relaunch Out To Lunch with the minimum of fuss and Sword Of Light is a worthy way to reintroduce the label indeed. Who The Hangout Project are hasn't been made clear but they have a clear and accomplished mastery of production, with the three tracks veering from luxuriant footwork on the title track to more low slung beatdown exercises on the flip. "Transfer" is quite lovely.

Review: People of Earth proudly presents Warren Harris aka . Blessing us with a 4 track EP titled "From the Dark Sky". Delivering his signature bass licks and providing us with a vocal track on top of it all in "Last Forever". Hints of jazz, gospel and straight deep house throughout the record, all beautiful, uplifting and full of purpose.

  4. Khords 1 (4:32)
Review: Warren Harris did a sterling job on his first outing for Perpetual Rhythms as Hanna, and he's back for round two. Things are just as deep as you would hope and expect, with Harris' unique take on the Detroit house formula present and correct on the cleverly executed "Lake Shore Dr." "Parallel" finds him exploring his penchant for snagged, off-kilter rhythms matched with deep house delicacy, and "Gold Coast" takes things into lounge territory without ever sounding insipid. Therein lies the magic of Hanna, and beautiful experiment "Khords 1" is on hand to finish the EP off as a statement of just how special and unique Harris' music is.
