Review: Stop: Hammer time! Optimo welcome a new person-of-mystery with two slippery club poppers that teeter between house, disco, funk and boogie. "At Once" struts with loose-strung bass, slinky beats and a possibly a vocal lament for days pre-social media (although we might be looking too deeply into that) "Stripes", meanwhile, goes back to the source: Arthur Russell's Felix guise with a slightly spiky, barbed twist on "Tiger Stripes". Needs more congas? Jump straight on the Special Disco Disco Remix.

Cat: UZURI 028. Rel: 29 May 18
  1. All Caught Up
  2. Cobwebs
  3. Cobwebs (Patrice Scott remix)
Review: The latest joint on Uzuri comes from Mark Hand, a secret weapon of the UK house underground who has been active for a long time and now seems to be finally getting the props he deserves. His mood on "All Caught Up" reflects the infectious positivity of his live sets at Freerotation, all mellifluous Rhodes keys and classic deep house signifiers that seep into your soul. "Cobwebs" is just as smooth, although it takes on a more deep-diving tone laden with transcendental chord progressions and a dash of Motor City melancholy. That makes Patrice Scott the perfect choice to remix the track, and he takes a measured approach to simmering the component parts down for a version garnished with gorgeous piano and synth tones.

  3. Chasing The Sunset (6:29)
  4. Sway Life (5:14)
Review: Shall Not Fade welcome a genuine house pillar; Warren Harris AKA Hanna. His first release in quite some time, he gently reminds us of his influence with four beautiful, unhurried soul-laced gems. "Knowing" is a day dreamer, all flutes, fretless bass, free and easy while "Love & Death" takes us deep inside the synths on a bed of loosely arranged percussion. Flip for the softly broken shuffles and twinkles of "Chasing The Sunset" and the left-sided stuttering-beat funk jam "Sway Life". Let's pray we don't have to wait so long for the next Hanna dispatch.

  3. Gold Coast (6:29)
  4. Khords 1 (4:32)
Review: Warren Harris did a sterling job on his first outing for Perpetual Rhythms as Hanna, and he's back for round two. Things are just as deep as you would hope and expect, with Harris' unique take on the Detroit house formula present and correct on the cleverly executed "Lake Shore Dr." "Parallel" finds him exploring his penchant for snagged, off-kilter rhythms matched with deep house delicacy, and "Gold Coast" takes things into lounge territory without ever sounding insipid. Therein lies the magic of Hanna, and beautiful experiment "Khords 1" is on hand to finish the EP off as a statement of just how special and unique Harris' music is.

  2. Bucktown (5:43)
  3. Wicker Park (4:31)
  4. Nuance (6:20)
Review: Chicago's Perpetual Rhythms label scores a coup in welcoming the inimitable Warren Harris to present what appears to be three separate installments of his honey coated house abstractions. "Poom" wastes no time in confirming that Harris' work as Hanna is unrivalled for off-the-wall rhythmic constructions that truly channel the freedom of jazz into the house stratosphere. "Bucktown" is no slouch in this regard either, while the swirling smoothness of the synths makes the spiky drum science taste all the sweeter. "Wicker Park" seems to take some influence from the West London broken beat scene, and then "Nuance" swoops in with yet more bruk action and some truly space age melodic content that marks this out as one of Hanna's strongest efforts in recent times.

  1. In The Morning (5:07)
  2. Psalms (6:22)
  3. Perhaps (5:59)
  4. Perhaps (Earl Jeffers remix) (5:57)
Review: Warren Harris continues to enjoy his most prolific year since the 90s with another immaculate, velvet groove EP on Return To Fade (who gave us his perennial "Caught In The Mxyzptik" EP last year) "In The Morning" is a sumptuous sunrise affair that's powered by a subtle vocal layering over a beat so smooth you barely notice it. "Psalms" offers wisdom beyond its six minutes with yearning jazz chords and soaring Claussellian pads while "Perhaps" moves closer to the dancefloor with a precision balance of weight and introspection. Remix wise Earl Jeffers joins the fray with a Balearic bomb; all rim shots and wizardry, drop this and everyone will get down to shake; there's no 'perhaps' about it.

  2. Box Of Box (Populette remix)
  3. Dysfunction
  4. Dysfunction (Toby Tobias Mainline mix)
Review: Attention Vegetarian vinyl consumers - approach this excellent introduction to the I'm A Cliche canon proper from Hannulelauri with caution if the sight of bare meat causes your constitution consternation. Raw steak on the cover art aside, there's little other reason not to indulge in this brilliantly oddball take on house music from the Finnish duo. Opening track "Box To Box" splays a cheeky acid stab lead over rusted percussion steeped in off kilter rhythms, whilst deep in the machine what sounds like an elephant tries to play along in time - it's a wonderfully tongue in cheek riposte to po faced music everywhere. The accompanying remix from Throne Of Blood duo Populette does a sterling job of realigning the track to burning deep house bump that's a perfect fit for the midnight hour. On the flip the title track "Dysfunction" straddles a lysergic house pump that will prove potent in the right atmosphere, whilst Toby Tobias embellishes the track with some soulful excess via diva warbling and hand claps.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** What can be said about this one that hasn't been before? The classic garage anthem from 1993 by New York City legend Lil' Louie Vega was originally released on Strictly Rhythm and is one you just have to have on wax, ain't it? Engineered by Erick Morillo and featuring the unmistakable looped-up vocals of Barbara Tucker (sampled from "Beautiful People") over its bouncy bassline and swing-fuelled shuffle. It has been remixed countless times over the past two decades, in 2016 even Kanye West used the vocal sample on his hit song "Fade".

Review: Hardway Bros is Sean Johnston - DJ, producer and one half of A Love from Outer Space with Andrew Weatherall. He's fast become a staple of James 'Fucking' Friedman's Throne Of Blood imprint with his modern take on classic house music formulas. If it 'aint broke, dont fix it we say - Johnston's winning formula is on show once again with the heads-down acid wiggle of "Friedman Deeback Loop Revision" followed by the metal dance of "The Laser" closing out the A side in neon-lit, electro fashion. On the flip, Maxime Pasquier (Sheik 'N' Beik/Kill The DJ) delivers a bleepu nu-disco rendition of the A side cut and final offering while "Afro Sirene" goes for a trippy and lo-slung Afro vibe.

  4. Minor Forms (Valentino Mora Cosmic Trans rephase) (6:43)
Review: Astonishingly, Minor Forms is Francis Harris' first solo appearance on Scissor & Thread for four years - an astonishing fact when you consider that he was one of the label's founders. Opener "Move We Cannot Do" is almost astonishingly deep, with Harris's delicate melodies and undulating, cymbal-heavy rhythm track struggling to rise above enveloping chords and dub techno style aural textures. "Minor Forms" is a little chunkier and more bass-heavy, but still jaw dropping in its bluesy, late night deepness. Valentino Mora serves up two flipside interpretations of that track, first giving it a clanking, metallic techno makeover (the "Underwater Rephase") before diving headfirst into dreamy dub techno waters (the "Cosmic Trans Rephase").

Review: Cardiff's Harrison BDP (Enclave/Phonica) is back on Shall Not Fade sister-label Lost Palms. Bangin', stabby and cyclical main room techno jams circa 2012 are the reference point for first track "Brute" which is reminiscent of classic Shed material, while "Implosion" on the flip follows in suit with its intense peak time rave energy. The remainder of the EP captures the essence of the label in fine fashion - from the dubby tech house of the title track with its liquid and ethereal groove, or the deep acid express of "Easy Does It" that's perfect for those heads down moments under the strobe later on in the night.

Review: Melbourne's Andy Hart is known for heading up the Voyage imprint, which over the last few years has pursued the many shades of deep house with releases by the likes of Harvey Sutherland, Urulu and Youandewan. Here he inaugurates his new Voyager sublabel, which sees a noticeable change of tune. On "Neutron Capture" he delivers a slow burning deep space transmission aboard the acid express, while the functional B side cut "Lftrr" is a dubby and hypnotic techno jam suited to heads-down moments in dank warehouse spaces. If this is a sign of things to come for Hart's new outlet, expect a string of club ready and dancefloor orientated cuts.

Review: The latest volume in Trend Records 'Ltd' series boasts a trio of fine cuts, each of which aims for a different kind of dancefloor. So, while Ondule Recordings regular HateLate explores loopy disco-house pastures on cheery opener "Can't Stop", the track which follows, Nasty Boy's "Sky Jam", looks to early Larry Heard and classic Italian dream-house for inspiration. Speaking of vintage Italo-house, scene stalwart Ricky Montanari - arguably best known for his role in Keys & Tronics Ensemble and Omniverse back at the turn of the '90s - joins forces with younger producer Tone-On for flipside cut "I Believe (Do You)". Loose, low-slung, groovy and blessed with some sublime old school vocal samples, it's a delicious blast from the past.

Review: Woop founder Ben Haulke eases us into the new year with restrained beat finesse across five sunny-side tracks. "One For Goldtooth" is a lolloping, fuzzy b-boy jam with housey ambitions while "Side Man" flexes a velvet falsetto over some robust unrelenting Chi-style kicks and "I Don't Believe" takes us deep into the smokiest of Parisian jazz lounges in a Uber powered by off-grid kicks. Bringing up the rear are the feel-good sax-melting "Yeh Yeh" and the vibrant filtered insistency of "Film Yourself, You'll Feel Better". Delicious.

Review: Having made his name with a series of cult releases on Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, Marquis Hawkes now finds himself a fully-fledged member of the Houndstooth roster with Raw Materials the Berlin-based DJ and producer's second 12" for Fabric's In house label. Proceedings commence on a noticeably spartan tone with the title track, the crisp 909 groove offering forward momentum amidst a backdrop of ghostly vocals, dense bass and sad faced chords. "Ave That" is equally thick set and finds Hawkes in a more playful mood, toying around with a vocal loop as the drums rain down chaotically. "Jerk U Later" finishes off in fine Dancemania riffing fashion. More please Marquis!

Review: The controversial Marquis Hawkes returns with more convincing classic house perspectives on Aus Music. We must say that you are in good hands with Mark Hawkins: a prolific producer whose career has spanned nearly 20 years - releasing for the likes of Pro-Jex and Djax Up Beats, back in the day. But unlike the hard techno exploits he presented on the latter, he's better known these days for more uplifting faire - as heard on "Wanna" that ticks all the boxes with its diva vocals, Strictly Rhythm style organs and all round early '90s styled NYC bounce. On the flip, we have the euphoric "Sure Thing Baby" that calls to mind classic Steve 'Silk' Hurley with those Kenny Bobien style vocals atop - which really are the cherry on the cake.

Review: Sometime Going Good and Jin Records producer Yoshinori Hayashi re-surfaces on Disco Halal, a label befitting his maverick, impossible-to-pigeonhole talents. Uncountable Set is predictably eccentric, with Hayashi laying down a quartet of muddy, otherworldly cuts that gleefully stick two fingers up at neat categorization. Check, for example, the rhythmic sample soup this is "Palanquin Bearing Monkey" - think spacey, jazz-funk synth doodles, handclap-based rhythms and all manner of woozy, cut and paste samples - the out-there afro-jazz of "Stepping on Dewdrops" and the frankly nightmarish closer "Chember", a fiendishly freaky weird-out that peppers a slipped jazz rhythm with cut-up choral samples and cement mixer percussion hits.

First up is the ever-untouchable Yoshinori Hayashi, who gets as straight up as he possibly could with the freaky house burner "Dissociative." Telephones is feeling particularly dubbed out and groovy on "Kalimbalimbo", while DB.Source and Riccardo Schiro take things strung out and textural on "Montevago". Dynamo Dreesen is in rave mode for the pepped up and delightfully weird "Reactivate", leaving the final side to Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung's chugging "Tunnel Visjon" and the rubbery side swipes of Acidboychair's "The End (At Any Speed)".

This 12" sees him reaching for the scalpel once more, delivering a quartet of killer cut-jobs for Brooklyn's mighty Razor 'N' Tape. Review: For their latest trip into soul-soaked machine music, People Of Earth has turned to debutant Detroit producer Haz Mat, who has been plying his trade as a musician and DJ in the Motor City for at least the last 15 years. There's an assured feel to A-side "My Zania", a rock solid, occasionally driving deep house number smothered in fluttering chord progressions, techno style analogue bass, and rising, intergalactic motifs. You'll find more tech-tinged deep house soul on the flip, where the synthesizer-heavy "Bridge To The Universe" - a fitting title, all told - sounds particularly addictive.
