Review: Ann Arbor's Spectral Sound has dutifully kept its finger on the pulse for the better part of fifteen years. Their latest offering sees current darling of the UK scene Fort Romeau commission four of Frankfurt's finest to remix selected tracks from his "Insides" LP. First up long standing local legend Roman Flugel steps up to remix the title track displaying his majestic and unmistakeable touch. Orson Wells delivers a stunning early '90s Prescription Records vibe on his remix of "Lately". Although not technically from Frankfurt but undoubtedly a close member of the Live At Robert Johnson family; Massimiliano Pagliara delivers his epically cosmic rendition of "All I Want". Lastly the Tuff City Kids do what they do best on their retro throwback rework of "Cloche"

  4. Winter (4:06)
Review: Given that each of their previous releases has been on-point, it's little surprise to find that Fouk's latest 12" is packed full of warm, sample-heavy, disco-flecked deep house treats. We'd argue that the headline attraction is bouncy opener "Organ Freeman", a tasty workout that layers fresh organ solos over a house groove built around rubbery bass and obscure disco-funk samples, though the wilder and more driving "Wrong Way" pushes it close. Elsewhere, "Butterfunk" is a lolloping trip into mid-tempo deep house/disco/jazz-funk fusion, while closer "Winter" is a loved-up chunk of deep space instrumental hip-hop with added boogie synths.

  1. Mating Call (7:26)
  2. Just Feel Good (6:25)
  3. Down Below (5:54)
Review: Fouking heck; is there any stopping this dynamic, vibe-hungry Dutch duo? Having buttered us up with funk on Outplay, they're now letting rip with three mating calls that are almost guaranteed to get you weak at the knees. "Mating Call" is premium uncut disco house that's rich in positivity and feels. "Just Feel Good" lives up to its name with its loose off grid groove and distant, hazy party feels running point throughout while "Down Below" winks good night with lavish Rhodes and a subtle but infectious percussion arrangement. Mate rates.

  1. Primitive Megalopolis
  2. Amaniyak Kree
Review: Fountain Of Chaos kicks off the Inextinguishable Fire label in style, purportedly transmitting from an undisclosed woodland location with a mission to bring you transcendental neo-pagan ritual music for the 21st century. "Primitive Megalopolis" definitely takes its cues from the likes of Jon Hassell with its rich, detailed sound bed of delicate pattering percussion, occasional flute breaths and slow, meditative rhythmic lurch. "Amaniyak Tree" flips the script with a fiery run of percussion that feels more like a Latin carnival throwdown, all tumbling ethnic instrumentation strapped to a discoid propulsion. It's a record of two very excellent, very different halves.

Review: Let's be honest now, when it comes to deep house few have been bossing it in the manner Anthony Collins and Francis Harris have with their Frank & Tony project these past few years. Issued largely through their own Scissors & Thread, Collins and Harris step away from the label momentarily for a 12" debut on Tokyo's finest Mule Musiq. Toshiya Kawasaki's label is one that stands for the utmost quality and Frank & Tony offer up their finest productions on this three track 12". Lead track "Amedeo" is all about that heart churning piano sample that calls out and grabs you, whilst "The Gales" is deep house at its most submerged.

Review: New York City's Francis Harris and Parisian Anthony Collins return as Frank & Tony with the Odes EP. This will be the final collaboration on their esteemed Scissor & Thread imprint. Kicking off proceedings with the classic, Windy City deep house sound of "Procession" which will hypnotise you in evocative style. The title track up next is truly bittersweet and melancholic; taking its cues once again from Chicago legends like Larry Heard or DaRand Land. Speaking of which, the latter is up next for a collaboration with the pair on B side offering "This Time" where the Deep4life alumnus injects some truly breathtaking and seductive deepness into the track which compliments their dusty rhythms and smoky synth textures. Finally, "Surface Prelude" is the EP's most optimistic moment; this uplifting jam is perfect to play as the last track, right as the sunlight creeps in through the blinds up at that Bushwick loft party on Sunday morning.

  4. Coral Desires (7:59)
Review: Lo-fi and retro classic house sounds with a Gothic flair courtesy of Fasaan Recordings who have dug deep into the techno underground of Malmo and found the drum machine anthems of Frankie Twilight. The woman behind this Alan Vega-esque alias does not subscribe to any genre definitions and is said to have played in a Berlin-based punk band as well as being a resident DJ at a members only 78 rpm jazz club. Starting off with "Olympia" on the A side, which is a raw and jacking live jam that could well have been recorded in one take. On the flip, there is the Murder Capital style darkwave techno of "My Opal Gems" or the thundering and brooding jackathon of "Coral Desires" which is equally as worthy of your attention.

Review: Surfacing from Hamburg with possible connections to the Smallville crew, the delightfully named Fuck Reality are back with a third transmission and more lush and dusty deep house. The opening track, "Knitring", is full testament to this, whilst "Break Away" is a nice lo-slung/slo-mo house cut reminiscent of Genius Of Time or the Aniara sound. On the flip, "Rett Fra Levra " goes for the traditional Chicago deep house sound of Larry Heard with its melancholic Dx7 chords before "Shortie" hammers the message home in dreamy/hazy hip-hop fashion for fans of the Money $ex/Glenn Astro sound out of Berlin.

Review: For the best part of a decade, Fred Peterkin has impressed with his ultra-deep, soul-flecked take on deep house and techno. Here, his Soul People Music imprint gives birth to a new sub-label, Energy of Sound, with the New York producer delivering a double-pack's worth of previously unreleased cuts. Naturally, the standard is abnormally high throughout, with Peterkin variously serving up sumptuous, dreamy fare ("Down Under", the San Francisco '90s deep house revivalism of "Don't Be Afraid"), chunkier deep house rollers ("Memory P"), crunchy dub house ("Dub In The Sky"), and throbbing, tech-tinged brilliance ("Tokyo To Chiba" and the European-sounding "Sybian").

Review: Seven Davis Jr. is the go to man for truly soul-inflected, boogie down house music, and so it goes on this new transmission on his Secret Angels label. Whether he's actually a part of the Freekazoidz project isn't clear, although it does sound like he may well be when you fire up the sensual rumble of "I Saw You Dancing" (featuring Tilson on autotuned vocals). "Anambra" is more of a tracky premise that lets the drums do all the talking, "Deep Lake" heads into a strange, bassy corner of deep house and then "Early Morning House" brightens up the party with a sax-licked jam for the late end of the party.

Review: DX Recordings presents 2 straight up house bangers from Scott Fraser in his Freeman guise and the first in a series of releases for 2015... On side A Dariana in its full extended form with bonus beats kicks out driving percussion and a massive piano break pounds the floor as the daylight streams in through the shutters. On side B, for deeper floors an original slice of 2000's house is re-mastered, brought back to life and released for 2015 with bonus beats included.

Review: A mesmerising slice of Detroit house meets afro fusion as Blair French continues the theme set by Peter Croce earlier this year. "Standing Still Is An Illusion" is a truly epic A-side as he invites Jazzanova's Paul Randolph, Will Sessions' Ryan Gimpert and Rocksteady Disco's own Topher Horn for a loose-limbed spiritual groove that evolves with vocal and drum-based magic. Deeper into the B we travel for two exceptional African beat experiences where the vibe is raw, soulful and authentic.

  2. Signals (3:44)
  3. Mind The Gap (5:54)
  4. Good Night Houston (6:09)
Review: Benedikt Frey's return to Live At Robert Johnson with Reframe arrives amidst a hive of activity for the local talent. He recently debuted on Hivern Discs with Nadia D'Alo as INIT, with a full album promised later this year, whilst he's also penciled in to appear on Lux Rec offshoot MRT. Having debut on LARJ some three years ago with Running in Circles, this four track 12" shows how pleasingly varied his productions have now become.Contrast, for example, the rolling, old skool breakbeats, watery melodies and vocoder vocals of "SH Birds", with the throbbing, EBM-influenced chug of "Mind The Gap". Or, for that matter, the creeping, ghostly late night beauty of "Signals", with the spacious, ultra-deep pulse of closer "Good Night Houston". While there's a constant thread running throughout - a sort of resigned weariness - Frey's ability to change style and rhythmic pattern is the EP's most impressive feature.

The VA includes works from german producer Benedikt Frey, russian producers Shine Grooves, Unbroken Dub, and an ambient group Kurvenschreiber. 2. Space In Time (Francesca Sortino vocals)
Review: Schema's founding schemer Frisina unleashes a dubbed out doublet of heavily percussive grooves. "Passion Dance" is a deeply hypnotic affair as wicked weaves of congas and timpani overlay to create a robust physical sensation that's complemented by swooning minor chords that sweep with soft subtlety. "Space In Time" is deeper again; with thick dub techniques applied with the rhythmic spine, we're invited to forge our own paths through the mystical fog. Once you've swathed through the otherworldly texture, you'll be amazed at the sonic light that awaits you.

Review: Seeking to sum up the sound of his burgeoning label, Mario Castillo pulls in a selection of artists to assist him in his Kastil guise. Soul Notes is a label clearly in love with a more vibe-laden kind of deep house, whether it comes in the form of a bumping garage shuffle as in Fulbert's "Untitled", or Kastil's own more aquatic excursion. The unifying atmosphere is a blue note one, coming out of dreamy chords steeped in the legacy of black music that permeate each of the tracks on offer. Look no further than the feel-good roll of Jefferson Belmondo's "Booty Groove" for an exercise in understated funk that knows how to pay its dues.

Happily its Swedish parent label has decided to pull out all the stops for this comeback 12", gathering together six tracks from artists based across Europe and beyond. At six tracks deep there's not enough space to go into detail about every track, but suffice to say they're all loose, warm, quirky and generally lo-fi in feel. Highlights include the dreamy analogue synth-funk of Ruf Dug's "Cassette Boogie", the poignant, emotion-rich synth-wave warmth of Fahcrur Riaz Hazbullah's "Muriam", the clicking beats and intergalactic synth flourishes of "Heina" by Ruutu Pois and the frankly foreboding loose-house creepiness of "II Y A" by Dublin's Compassion Crew.

Review: Although Satoshi Fumi has been releasing music since the dawn of the millennium, we're not sure he's ever made a better record than this first EP for We Play House. For proof, check A-side "Toriton", a fresh version of a 2016 cut that brilliantly joins the dots between 1990s Japanese deep house don Mr YT, British intelligent techno and the far-sighted sci-fi techno of fellow Tokyo resident Ken Ishii. If that wasn't enough to set the pulse racing, B-side "Lalalalaland", a Balearic-minded, piano-heavy dance through saucer-eyed dream house territory with added sunrise-friendly synthesizers, is arguably even better. In other words, you need this record in your life.
