  4. Functional Apparatus (5:38)
Review: Tony Ollivierra is an underground hero from Detroit, who in addition to releases as Ibex on his Ibex Music and Northside District imprints, had some respected editions on the likes of Planet E around the turn of the millenium. He donned the DJ Slym Fas alias around 1996 - 1997, when he produced three EPs which have been much sought after in recent years. These unearthed jams come courtesy of STEP: the new vinyl-only label from the founders of PETS - Catz n Dogz. From the bleepy and lo-slung "Motion Activation", the emotive hi-tech soul of "Amphibious (Green)" or the epic futurism of "Functional Apparatus" calling to mind the work of local legends such as Derrick May or Juan Atkins.

  1. DJ Slyngshot - "Hygh Tech" (10:58)
  2. Bastien Carrara - "That Time Again" (6:56)
  3. Jayson Wynters - "Chi Kung" (7:33)
Review: As you'd expect, there's far more hits than misses on this second sampler 12" for Secretsundaze acclaimed Dance 2017 compilation. We're particularly enjoying the deep and spacey shuffle of Jayson Wynters's "Chi Kung", where eyes-closed electronics and intergalactic synthesizer flourishes cluster around a bongo-laden, acid-fired groove. Bastien Carrera's gently bobbing "That Time Again" is also quietly impressive, but it's the A-side salvo from DJ Slyngshot that really impresses. Entitled "Hygh Tech", the track doffs a cap to both tactile, loved-up old deep house and chunkier early UK tech-house, while carving its own breakbeat-driven, rave-for-days old school niche.

Review: Time for a legend session as one of Italy's most respected DJs - Serendipity's Marco Socci - makes his debut on the iconic Skylax imprint with a dream-filled Mr Fingers style vocal soul-burner. Guaranteed to soundtrack the perfect sunset or sunrise, it's complemented by a two killer versions: the filtered mix is a powerful slice of lavish piano-tickled soul while Jason Groove lays down a classic Trax style jam loaded with 808 bass and crisp percussion. Loaded with an acapella, too. This covers every base and beyond.

Review: Having previously danced "Under the Garage" and "Under The Loft", old pals DJ Sprinkles and Hardrock Striker are now throwing shapes beneath "The Ballroom" on this third and final part of the exclusive vinyl series accompanying their celebratory Skylax House Explosion mix CD. Fittingly, there's a trio of tracks to choose from, beginning with the tactile, loved-out dream house chords, fluttering FM synthesizer melodies and rubbery, retro-futurist Balearic house grooves of Lauer's "Bigs". Octa Octa steals the show with the alternately chiming and dreamily deep "Running" - all eyes-closed synthesizer melodies, elongated chords, cut-up vocals and snappy drum machine percussion - while "Soleil Mauve" by Violence FM and The Underground Soulsavers is an effortlessly good chunk of dreamy, melodious and ultra-deep house.

  3. Morning Light (6:57)
  4. Apollo 7 (unreleased dub) (6:43)
Review: It bumped the dickens out of us in 2012 and it's about to do it again in 2018; DJ Steaw returns to one of his key pivotal early releases and reboots it on his House Puff imprint with a cheeky unreleased dub. If you don't know the Chandleresque original (or the stripped back deep mix), now is most certainly the time. "Morning Light" sounds just as fresh as well; hazy, finger-clicky, subtly atmospheric, it's still as timeless as it was back on Traxx Underground. Finally Steaw sets us to slow-cook with the bubbling disco funker "Apollo 7". Trippy, woozy and chugging like it's 1982 all over again, even if you picked up "Everydayz" at the time this is worth it for "Apollo 7" alone. Delicious.

  1. Heaven (6:00)
  2. I See You (6:30)
  3. Picpus (6:36)
Review: Fresh from fine 2017 outings on Madhouse and his own Steaward label, action man DJ Steaw returns to Hot Haus Records with a trio of deep house jack-tracks. A-side "Heaven", a rush-inducing mixture of dreamy deep techno electronics, tactile synth bass, bustling beats and subtle "Pacific 808" references, is little less than a spine-tingling, saucer-eyed anthem, while "Picpus" sees the experienced French producer pepper a classic NYC deep house groove with hooky organ stabs and almost overwhelmingly picturesque synthesizer motifs. The EP's other cut, "I See You", is arguably the deepest of the bunch, though the producer's use of skipping beats and heavy sub-bass guarantees good dancefloor energy throughout.

Review: Marseille's finest DJ Steef steps up to the plate for the next Foto 12 inch, supplying 3 hefty house tracks of varying tempo's and moods. Main jam 'Shaking' kicks off proceedings with a chopped-up break and kicking groove before a piano-laden mid-section sends the temperature rising. Next up Freeters hits heavy on the pitch-down vibe with some wonky electronics underpinned by a solid 4/4 low end. Over on the flip big bossman The Revenge hits back with a trademark stripped-out mix of Shaking which is heavy on the machine funk. Rounding things off Mojica Tribe is an altogether deeper number with smooth pads and an ethereal atmosphere.

  2. Atter Action (4:21)
  3. Buck 'Em Down (5:58)
Review: Man-or-woman of mystery DJ Swagger has been making a lot of appearances on multi-artist EPs of late, often contributing fuzzy chunks of rave-influenced lo-fi house (very 2017). It's perhaps fitting, then, that the cheekily named artist's first solo EP for yonks is being released by E-Beamz, a label that specializes in both retro-futurist club tracks and dubious production aliases. A-side "Holly Tool" sees the swaggering one put ghetto-house through the intergalactic lo-fi house ringer, naturally beefing it up with some skittish breakbeats. On the flip you'll find the two-step garage revivalism of "After Action" and the scuttling techno madness of "Buck 'Em Down", which is propelled forwards by wobbly sub-bass and sweaty electronic motifs.

Review: DJ Windows XP broke through in 2017 with their track "I Cried Last Time" on tastemaker imprint E-Beamz. Following up the hot "Sometimes I Feel Happy, Sometimes Sad" on Who's Susan, the Amsterdam based duo provides the third release on Lorca's Live Ones - with some lo-fi disco house indebted to a zeitgeist they ironically never even lived through! The A side features the woozy yet emotive summertime house of "Disco Dreaming" and the funky "Breakfast At Wendys" sounding like early Def Mix material. On the flip, "Some People Get It" goes for that dusty Berlin style MPC house, while similarly "Sloppy Beat" uses the same approach but injects some nice jazzy samples into it for more stylish effect.

Review: Following the recent 5 reworks from Andres and Arapu, Djebali invites two more crucial producers to the remix party. Japanese OG Satoshi Tomiie takes the trippy skit "The Other Night" and builds an entire track around it with cracking drums and a broadsword sense of space and atmosphere while fellow Parisian Terrence:Terry softens the acid punch of "God's Dream" with a much warmer synth palette that flows over his signature sweet-shuffled drums. Bon voyage.

The former adds a little sunset charm to "Seven Blessings" with a touch more percussion, jazzy tones and yearning atmospheres while the latter gives "Heartgroover" a much more direct and focused sense of groove with a trippy heads-down shuffle that you'll lose hours in. Review: Signature unleash their first limited EP of the year. And if you've been following their series so far, you'll know how special this is. First up, Djebali who's on fine form as always as he reminds us of the dark art of restraint by way of an ebbing/flowing pad that gently laps over a subtly mutating drum arrangement. Politics Of Dancing, meanwhile, put full focus on the drums, gradually unveiling elements such as a clipped vocal loop and filtered synths before whipping them away again. Flip for a straight up hip-wriggling jam from Okain before REda DaRE seals the deal with the effortlessly slinky "Le Bien Aime" which spirals into untold levels of funk on the breaks. Trust us, this won't stick around for long.

  4. Wise Bird (3:05)
Review: To date, sometime Antinote and Melody as Truth contributor D.K (AKA Paris-based producer Dang-Khoa Chau) has yet to release a duff record. In fact, we'd go as far as saying that each of his releases has been nothing less than essential. The Mystery Dub EP, his first 12" for Music From Memory offshoot Second Circle, is every bit as alluring as its predecessors. As usual, many of the tracks come doused in humid, tropical samples, boast rush-inducing chords and melodies, and are underpinned by brilliantly programmed, Maxmillion Dunbar style machine rhythms. Highlights-wise, we're rather enjoying boisterous, delay-heavy opener "Stick By The Rules (Long Version)" and the ambient house influenced brilliance of "Rebound", though the simpler "Mystery Dub" and obligatory ambient cut "Wise Bird" are similarly impressive.

Review: Open Recordings continue their mission to champion quality chunky deep house wares from a range of artists on their third release. This time around Italian duo DNArt take the lead with two original jams, and they get things heating up nicely with "Short Story" before tripping things out on the swirling funk of "ZZYZX". On remix duties, Nick Beringer drops a tightly wound minimal house shuffle all over "Short Story" and then Frazer Campbell works up a deadly stripped down version of "ZZYZX", nudging the mellow tones of the original into prime late night material.

  1. Baby Powder (15:20)
Review: After delivering two well-received EPs to 20:20 Vision last year, Dokta is starting up his own series of releases on the long-standing tech house institution. He's starting this new mission in style with a single-sided, 15-minute long epic with Leonidas to send the dancefloor into a deep house rapture. There's a cosmic space flight narrative to get drawn into, a wealth of expressive sax playing, an extended meltdown, some well chosen shout outs to the pioneers, and a sweetly subdued roll out that feels very far from where the journey began, like all epic tracks should do. Talk about a statement release.

  1. Clear
  2. Clear (DJ T remix)
  3. Clear (Jaymo & Andy George remix)
Review: One is formerly the front man of a notorious Glaswegian punk band, the other a meticulously precise studio guru with creative flair way beyond the majority. As solo artists they're a formidable force, as a collective they're quite simply one of the most exciting new acts in the UK right now. Refusing to rush, they spend countless hours trying ideas, searching for samples, tuning percussion and tweaking sounds. For every Mia Dora track that sees the light of day, there are 100 that don't. This isn't throwaway club music for the internet generation, it's soulful, thoughtful and emotive music by two producers fuelled by an intrinsic need to give life to the sounds in their heads.

'Clear' is a shivering end-of-the-night song that achieves fullness through the sonic refinement of each and every sound within it. Simple but insanely effective, we believe this is a true modern day classic that will sound as good in 10 years time as it does today. On remix duties Get Physical top dog DJ T stays true to the original, plumping the sub frequencies for a more club-focused rework, whilst Jaymo & Andy George deliver a low-slung version filled with twisted vocal effects and orchestral strings.

Review: District of Columbia-based deep house imprint Better Listen has barely put a foot wrong since launching late last year. Predictably, their latest missive, which comes courtesy of rising star Dorsi Plantar, is another beauty. Title track "Everlast" opens proceedings via jazzy, jammed-out pino riffs, dewy-eyed electronic flourishes and dusty deep house beats, before "You're Solid as Fuck" re-focuses attention on a chopped-and-looped deep house/jazz-funk fusion. Flip to the B-side for the grandiose orchestration of disco-house pumper "Fool's Gold" and the near-Balearic sweetness of sun-soaked chunky house closer "Babesonite", which comes on like a disco-house enthusiast's tribute to Pepe Bradock's "Deep Burnt".

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Doublet is the production moniker of friends and musical partners Tomoki Tamura and Tuccillo, previously releasing together on other labels, they have come together to form the new eponymously named Doublet imprint as a channel for their own music. Tomoki and his Holic Trax label have long been serving up solid house music whilst Tuccillo has conjured up numerous Beatport chart toppers on labels like 2020Vision, Visionquest and Holic Trax. Here their unique style brings you back from classic house music to future minimalism and is sure to fill you with joy. Up first is the title track, a charming house shuffler with woozy synths, light footed percussion and skipping rhythms that give an off kilter and deep dancefloor vibe. 'Brother Other' is a slightly more physical affair with lumpy beats, tense synth crescendos and stiff snares that really encourage you to shake your limbs. Lastly, 'Buri Planet' is a deep and sensual number with clever vocals samples adding an element of pained soul, rubbery bass bringing warmth and golden synths and acid squelches building yet more character. This is accomplished, alive sounding house music that really does sound fresh. Doublet, then, is already off to a winning start. Vinyl Only.
