  4. Jackie - "Butter" (6:10)
Review: Bologna pride on display, on the fourth instalment of Bolo Represent. Four northern Italian talents strut their stuff on a colourful selection of grooves here. Starting with Smile & Stay High boss DJ Cream, who delivers some tough and swing fuelled shenanigans on "Dig IT", while Nudge goes ultra deep on the smooth and sensual mood lighting of "Tic Tok" rounding up the A side. On the flip we have Bassa Clan, comprised of veteran producer Dino Angioletti (Pastaboys/The Goodfellas) with the formerly m_nus affiliated producer Fabrizio Maurizi with the throwback sounds of classic deep house as heard on "Teero". Finally, Jacopo Latini (aka Hills Connection/Homequest/Voodoo Effect) serves up the hypnotic bounce of "Butter".

Review: Long-serving US house champ DJ Dan dropped an absolute bombshell when his Slammin Trax Vol. 1 EP landed earlier this year, and now the veteran big room party starter is back with another clutch of tracks on his peerless InStereo label. Alongside Fleetwood Smack he drops the crazily funky vocal jam "Do 2 U," while his remix of Conga Squad's "Live At K-Market" brings a little fidget-esque hype into the mix. The B-side kicks off with Jarred Gallo's feisty roller "Peep The Technique," and then it's back over to Dan in partnership with Mike Balance for the raw, jacking "Overworked."

Review: Having emerged just over a year ago, Adelaide's Vlad Gavrilov - AKA DJ Heure - has yet to make a duff move. Deep house polished with class and driven by weighty production; every dispatch has been gold so far. Including this return to Distant Hawaii; "Metcha" makes itself known with strange percussive slurs and woozy chords while "Rue De Saintonge" and "I Want To Be There" strut and twinkly with an illustrious deep 4/4. Finally we hit "Deuce". The most startling cut of the set thanks to its stark fracturism and epic cascades of cosmicity. O la la.

  2. Hot Coffee - "On The Verge" (6:24)
  3. M. Vaughan - "Man 2 Man" (6:48)
  4. Tilman - "A Day To Remember" (6:32)
Review: Super Tuff is a relatively new concern hailing from Brooklyn, committed to presenting a broad range of talent from the more curious corners of the house spectrum. On this third release we're introduced to the delightful sound of DJ Heure, who unfurls wonderful pattering percussion, jazzy notes and a mellow, ambient finish to pull at the heartstrings. There's a slightly more forthright thump to Hot Coffee's "On The Verge", but it's still a dusky twist on the typical deep house formula. Label boss M. Vaughan brings things a little more upfront on "Man 2 Man", and top-drawer German producer Tilman weaves a rich and invigorating tale with his swooning "A Day To Remember".

  1. Reflection (Maurice Fulton mix) (6:12)
  2. Bubbles Away (6:16)
  3. Swangzipani (6:05)
  4. Judge Not (5:05)
Review: Janette "Jnett" Pitruzzello is considered something of a legend in her home city of Melbourne, where she's been DJing for well over two decades. This Wildlife EP is her debut solo release, features the legend Maurice Fulton on co-production duties, and arrives on Running Back after first seeing release digitally through Bubbletease Communications earlier this year. Fulton delivers a solo mix of "Reflection" to open proceedings, adding a little leftfield disco sparkle and percussive sweatiness to an otherwise organ-heavy deep house groove. There's a similarly cheery, funky and disco-tinged feel to the rolling, cut-up house goodness of "Swangzipani". Elsewhere, the duo gets a little stranger in pursuit of dancefloor thrills; "Bubbles Away" is deliciously dark, wonky and intergalactic, while "Judge Not" wanders off into head-nodding, instrumental hip-hop territory.

Cat: DAS 022CE. Rel: 03 Apr 18
  1. Love Mystery (Of Love #2)
  2. 9 Lives
  3. Confused House
Review: deepArtSounds may be a sublabel of Moto Music, but it's achieved so much on its own terms over the past decade. Now Joe Lewis is joining the esteemed ranks of the label with even more experience behind him - he was recording for the likes of Relief Records and Peacefrog way back when. It's no secret when you listen to his jams on Back 2 Live, where rugged and raw synth lines sit atop tough machine beats. "Love Mystery" is plenty tender where it counts, but "9 Lives" and "Confused House" head towards a rougher end goal for the nastier kind of party.

  1. I Can't Wait (vocal) (4:44)

  3. I Can't Wait (dub) (5:00)
Review: Hot on the heels of Clone Classic Cuts' reissue of Survival's "Midnight Dancin" (as part of a 12" compilation of Joe Lewis productions), Groovin has decided to re-release "I Can't Wait". Intriguingly, this edition appears to include two previously unreleased mixes. So, while some Chicago house diggers may already own the Vocal mix - where Daryl Goodlett's slick, soulful vocals rise above an early garage-influenced chunk of disco-tinged vocal deep house - they won't have heard the Instrumental or Dub versions. The latter, a traditional Dub in the mid-to-late-'80s New York style (think key vocal passages, delay-laden beats and judicious use of other key elements), is particularly good.

  6. Rythum Shit (9:44)
Review: Yes! New York's big friendly giant and cream of the crop when it comes to house music, DJ Jus Ed, lands back on his own excellent Underground Quality stable with an extended Ep-come-mini LP. You know you can always count on the man to deliver pure magic, and each of these six tracks are a total joy on the ear, a marvellous journey into the smoothest depths of true deep house. "Vision Ride Of Reality" sets the scene with a gentle, cinematic bundle of melodies, and "Minimal Groove Up Vibe" slots in a little extra spice with the help of some bleepy sonic twists. "Strange Bad Connection" is more of a classic NY house stomper, while "Space Rhythm" rattles its leftfield percussion amid bleak shards of keys, "Where Am I Now" enters a long and enchanted wormhole, while "Rhythum Shit" lays down a heavy groove and ties this release off with an extra dose of grit and fiery energy.

  3. Katzbach Gruv (6:27)
  4. Train Ride To Berlin (6:43)
Review: The East Coast's house don DJ Jus-Ed is, as always, on an unstoppable run of form. His latest bundle of club-friendly tunes comes on his own Underground Quality, of course, and it's four tracks from the man himself - preaching the gospel like only he knows how! Starting with "Acid Fro", the mood is darker and more hypnotic than his usual approach - this is a proper belter in every sense of the word - while "Ice 597 To Frankfurt" is more minimal, wavey and utterly pouncing. Flip the record and you got the melancholic melodica of "Katzback Gruv", another stomping club affair for the earlier set times, and "Train Ride To Berlin", a jittery, percussion-driven bit of neo-tribalism. Hot, as always. Don't miss this!

Review: Maltese deep house dude Melchior Sultana becomes the latest addition to Jus-Ed's bulging list of collaborators, which also includes Levon Vincent, Fred P, Nina Kraviz, DJ Qu, Move D, Mr G, Lawrence and Son of Sound. The resultant jams are sweet, sticky and undeniably Moorish. Check, for example, the shuffling Afro-house beats, sumptuous electric piano solos, leisurely jazz guitars and spoken word vocals of "Choices", the piano and synth-bass driven breeziness of "Outside" and the classic deep house warmth of closing cut "Press It". "Now Scat", an ultra-deep, acid-flecked treat, is also top notch.

XTC (12")

  1. XTC (8:18)
  2. Knee On Belly (6:05)
Review: Every year one of 'those' records comes along that you hear everywhere; big DJs drop it, small DJs cherish it, radio plays it. You get the picture. XTC by DJ Koze looks to be one of those records. The PAMPA boss is renowned for a talent at wrenching optimum levels of emotion from electronic music and "XTC" is a fine example of how well DJ Koze does it. Some eight minutes of deep house every bit as immediately consuming as, say "Beautiful Life" by Gui Boratto, are complemented by the appearance twice of a pitched down vocal (that sounds remarkably similar to Maggie Thatcher) discussing the popular drug that informed the title. Complementing this, Koze indulges in some superb cut up filter house with "Knee On Belly".

  1. Seeing Aliens (8:17)
  2. Nein Konig Nein (7:22)
Review: For his first release on Pampa for some two years, DJ Koze is in a decidedly Balearic mood. For proof, check title track "Seeing Aliens", where drowsy acoustic guitar loops and gentle piano riffs wrap themselves around a hazy, sunrise-friendly deep house beat. This glassy-eyed mood is prevalent throughout the atmospheric track, which builds slowly via a moodier and more bass-heavy section, rich in glitchy electronics, before blossoming into a squeezable Balearic deep house groove. Bonus cut "Nein Konig Nein" has a similar feel, even though it's constructed from gentle Afro-house drums, fizzing tech-house electronics and a drowsy vocal sample.

Cat: PAMPA 031. Rel: 18 Apr 18
  1. Pick Up (12" extended disco version) (9:57)
  2. The Love Truck (9:47)
Review: When it comes to crafting lengthy, disco fired dancefloor treats, DJ Koze has previous form. His "Extended Disco Version" of Lapsley's "Operator" quickly became a White Isle anthem in the summer of 2016, and we fully expect "Pick Up" to be one of the disco-house hits of 2018. Based around spine-tingling samples from a heart-felt, orchestrated 1970s disco treat - think Tom Trago's "Use Me Again", and you're close - the veteran producer slowly builds the pressure before really letting loose in the closing stages. B-side "The Love Truck" is an altogether deeper, dubbier and dreamier affair, seemingly designed for leisurely warm-up sets and gentle, early morning shuffling.

  4. Rock Da Tekkno (5:16)
Review: Polish producer DJ Krime last appeared on wax almost four years ago, serving up a smorgasbord of hip-hop inspired beats cuts for U Know Records. Here he changes tack dramatically, impressively fusing elements of lo-fi house, Dance Mania style ghetto house and melodious deep house. He sets out his agenda on the ever-building, acid-fired heaviness of "Keep It Real", before tickling himself into a giggly frenzy on the saucer-eyed, smile-inducing goodness of "Chi-Town Music", where restless snare-drum fills ratchet up the energy level throughout. Turn to side B for the insanely weighty, sub-heavy booty-house business of "Dizzy Man (Original G-House Mix)" and the slamming, ghetto-house pump of "Rock Da Tekkno". In two words: rock solid.

Review: Hot damn! Fresh Chicago booty action from legends of the genre on the fifth outing from the increasingly on-point Albion label! Here we have the legendary Dance Manian Dj Lil' Tal with "Questions", which sees the producer give up some of his classic ghetto sound with the usual bag of kinky vocal samples, while Phran's "Nexxxt" is rawer, nastier and more punishing while still keeping the vocal shots. Legend Traxman looses the plot on the bumpy "Get High", and the mysterious DJ Handsome sways and swings among bleeps on the aptly named "Pop Yo Pussy".

Review: It's early days for DJ Loser, having just been snapped up for a split cassette release with Raw Ambassador in the recent past. Luckily, getting a spot on London's well-established Bliq label is a fine place to start, and the debutant producer turns out some confidently grubby house wares for their first spot on vinyl. "Your Eyes Were Telling Me That You Really Cared" is a woozy, infectious club track full of scuffed drum machines and low-rent synth flares, while "Untitled" has a much more abrasive palette on offer. "I've Got Dis (But I Can't Do It)" hits a similar vein of atmospheric jackery before Bliq regular Seixlack turns out a more densely packed remix.

  1. Lulo (7:35)

Review: Church's latest release - a rather tasty, two-track ten-inch single - comes courtesy of South London sorts DJ Malcolm and Dabriel Garius. A-side "Lulo", a jazzy deep house cut smothered in expansive piano solos, dreamy synth chords and sampled female vocals, is particularly potent, with the duo expertly layering up the percussion to give the track a sun-kissed, carnival-friendly feel. Flipside "Guava" displays a similar jazz influence, with the duo trading electric piano and trumpet solos over elastic synth bass and swinging, semi-broken deep house grooves. It's what we imagine a contemporary collaboration between Phil Asher and 2000Black boys Dego and Kaidi Tatham would sound like, which is high praise indeed.

Review: Cottam's Ruff Draft label makes a logical move and turns to a long-serving champion of gritty, soul-powered house jams from the tough side. DJ Nature may have made his name many moons ago, but he proves to be as relevant as ever on this killer two-track release. "Alfred" is a tightly wound box jam that manages to maintain tension throughout without needing to pander to the release part of the process, sounding all the more exciting for it. "Blood On Your Hands" meanwhile finds Nature heading into the scuffed, soul-sampling territory he's most at home in, and the ensuing rumble of off-key funk is impossible to refute.

Review: New York-based DJ Nature has decided to launch a new label to handle his productions. FWD EVR is the imprint, and the "Conflicted Interests EP" its debut release. The former Wild Bunch crew DJ starts in confident fashion with "Oyasumi", a rolling, percussion-rich fusion of bustling jazz-house and organ-laced U.S garage flavours, before reaching into his sample banks for inspiration on the dusty, string-drenched deep house shuffler "Bobbi". It's breathtakingly beautiful, with enough percussive grunt to keep energy levels high out on the dancefloor. Over on side B, we're treated to two versions of "Violet & Me": the semi-stomping, undeniably beautiful original mix and a deeper "Native Healing Reprise" that strips the track back to bass, beats and undulating orchestration.
