  3. Summer (Slow Porno mix) (5:04)
  4. 2000 Balloons (6:12)
Review: Alessandro Pasini, or known as Deep88 when he pulls his dance face, has been putting out music largely through his own 12Records over the last six years, but he's making an outside appearance for the US' Juice Records this week, a mighty fine addition to his now impressive catalogue. He's in house mode and the Italian delivers the A-side in the form of "Wow & Flute", a Pal Joey kinda joint with a laid-back approach, and the much heavier, stomped-out house killah that is "Don't Believe The House Hype". On the flip, there's deeper and wonkier moments on the Slow Porn remix of "Summer", but also a load of heavier house experimentation on the utterly stoned "2000 Balloons". A house tip for you, that's for sure.

  2. Believe In You (feat Robert Owens - RNR remix)
  3. La Beija (Rhythm 2 Soul remix)
  4. Rotation (MHCrew remix)
  5. The Vibe (Jimini remix)
Review: After the first two 12"s from label founder Deep88 himself, ASCII Records turns to a whole host of different characters to remix those tracks with some stunning and varied results. Luis CL is up first, taking a decidedly mellow approach to "Harmony" that tips into a heavy lidded early 90s deep house mood perfectly, while RNR take the Robert Owens-featuring "Believe In You" and make it into a stirring, tense but ultimately emotional acid-laced floor track. Rhythm 2 Soul do a gentle job on "La Beija", MHCrew take a Larry Heard-esque approach on "Rotation" and Jimini lets the space in the mix tell its own story.

The Jam EP (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Commando (4:40)
  2. O-Ring (5:22)
  3. Calzer8 (6:11)
  4. Nightwish (5:13)
Review: Dedicated hardware hassler and devoted house head Alessandro Pasini has been working tirelessly to push his agenda of warm, classically-rooted house and techno played out live on an impressive spread of equipment. This second release on his Ascii Records label continues that mission in fine style, kicking off with the slinky acidities of "Commando" before diving into the tom-tastic immersion of "O-Ring". On the B-side "Calzer8" takes a more sprightly approach with its bouncy jacking drums and zippy synth lines, and then "Nightwish" takes things in a refined, deep direction without compromising on serious strut-ability. This is outboard house music how it should be done.

Review: The mysterious Deetroit series is back and while we'd love to tell you who these shadowy house bangers are made by, we simply still don't know! What we do know, however, is that number seven in the series is as slick and laid-back as the previous numbers, offering that Michigan charm we all love so much. This being said, while "Deestinction" and "Manana Del Tigre" are chilled, vibed-out and on the funky side, "Forwardeep" itself is wilder and more daring thanks to its wacky bassline. There's more funkiness on the flip with the gritty, swinging beats of "Remembering What You Said" and " Say No More", and the more wavey tones of the "Liaisons Dangereuses". Hotly tipped, of course!

Review: Sam Geiser aka Deetron serves up his first double pack EP on his label Character. The five tracks are the producer's take on house music from the viewpoint of an accomplished DJ of nearly twenty years. Having carved a long standing reputation in both the techno and house worlds, Geiser exposes another side of his personality here. Utilising soul, funk and hip-hop production techniques, the tracks are built on sampled material, much in the vein of his earlier and heavily charted tracks. "I Got To Have You" starts off the EP in fine form, this soulful number having the same energy as previous anthems like "I Cling". He then gets down with some superb hi-tech soul on the stylish "Take Me Higher" while loopy latin house gets its turn on the infectious "Supper In Casa Blanca"

Review: Detroit producer Bale Defoe is up next on Ele Records, which was established in Hanoi in 2016 and now based in Manchester, UK. They are sourcing and sharing dusty, sample based music inspired by the rich soundscape of early hip hop and house productions. Defoe seems like a good fit for the label, following up label owner Sameed's smoky and lo-fi exploits with some of his own. Starting off with the emotive swing fuelled shuffle of "Deeper Love" with those hands in the air house organ stabs and diva vocals loops mixed to magnificent effect, while the looped up and disco-fied DJ tool "Teddy Pendergrass" will appeal to fans of the Robsoul sound. On the flip, "Work #1" and "Work #2" respectively reinterpret ghetto-tech and ballroom aesthetics into a deep house framework in impressive fashion. Finally, there's the EPs standout moment in the form of the smoky and seductive late night mood lighting of "Breeze".

Review: Mike Dehnert's sublime output has been largely restricted to his own Fachwerk label over the last eight years, so it's surprisingly refreshing to see him branch out to other contemporary labels. His native Pampa imprint seems like the perfect place for his stripped-back shades of house music, and "How Close To Be", with its driving, fuzzed-out bassline makes for the perfect accompaniment to the tune's brooding vocal samples. On the B-side, "Me Too" is lo-fi in very sense of the word, once again dropping on a layer of eerie yet sentimental voices to take the track from odd to the utterly bizarre. In our eyes, that is a good thing...

  2. Different From The Rest (5:24)
  3. Getting Dark (6:01)
Review: Demuja is in a Rush, so we'll make this review short and to the point. The EP sees Salzburg-based deep house man Bernard Weiss continue his recent rich vein of form, which has included outings on RTCT and Muja. On the A-side you'll find the pleasingly chunky beats, held organ chords, toasty bass and sampled blues vocals of "What's Up Buddy", a floor-friendly concoction with enough haziness to please the heads amongst us. Flip for the vintage Prescription Records style goodness of "Different From The Rest" and the woozy warmth of analogue-rich West Coast deep house shuffler "Getting Dark" (which, to be honest, isn't actually that dark).

Review: Fresh from the recent release of his killer Vinum 12" on Let's Play House, Salzburg sort Bernard Weiss brings his Demuja project to Madhouse for the very first time. The EP is headed up by "Come To Me", a rubbery chunk of classic deep house rich in saucer-eyed vocal samples, lilting Rhodes chords, bustling stabs and crunchy machine drums. Folamour's accompanying remix naturally pushes the track further towards warm and woozy deep house territory - via the box marked "glassy-eyed late night positivity" - before Demuja unfurls two fantastic bonus cuts. Of the pair, it's "Take", a tribute to early New Jersey deep house rich in buzzing synth-sax and memorable chord progressions, that arguably hits home hardest.

Cat: UNTHANK 006. Rel: 18 Jul 18
  1. Wuhti
  2. Dharma Dharma
  3. Wuhti (feat Paleo Logos - DJ Soto Fett Bhakti Crew mix)
Review: Firecracker Recordings' Unthank label has been a decidedly intermittent concern since it's eye catching arrival back in 2010 with the Parris Mitchell mangling antics of Berlin dwelling Estonian producer Bakey USTL. It makes for somewhat poetic reading that the label's sixth release should usher in the return of a producer whose last apparent production credit was a contribution to the Fudge Fingas cut "Fidgety Friends" way back in 2007! Quite what the West Yorkshire based Denaji has been doing in the subsequent years is not clear, but your focus should be on his contributions here, with the Wuhti 10" quite sublime. The title track and "Dharma Dharma" are the sort of star gazing boogie and fizzing deep house that fit snugly into the overarching Firecracker sonic canon and do check the wondrous remix of "Wuhti" from Norwegian Sex Tags mastermind DJ Sotofett.

  3. Bravik - "130314" (6:58)
  4. Bravik - "130314" (Fred P reshape) (7:48)
Review: Dept. is a Helsinki based, newly found record label and music collective. Their VA1 contains originals by Dept. regulars, Denzel and Bravik supported with remixes from Satoi and the legendary electronic music pioneer, Fred P.

Denzel's "About Greatness" exhibits classic house vibes infused with a modern approach utilising a rich palette of rhythms, pads and a monologue which guides the listener through the track. Satoi's remix pushes the original towards a technoish form with a more straightforward and darker yet melodic take.

In contrast Bravik's track "130314" is a summerish and monotonic, uptempo stomper which contains a finely refined contrast between the distorted rhythms, sub bass and synth stabs. In the reshape Fred P has traditionally taken the track to a completely new path by tweaking the original elements to an unrecognisable state, creating an atmospheric and funk-esque house track.

Dept. VA1 is an intriguing combination in the best possible way.

Cat: TJ 002. Rel: 27 Apr 17
  1. Kamby (version) (6:15)
  2. Saskwatch (version) (6:56)
Review: Last year's first outing from the Tiff's Joint label - a gleeful, hard-to-pigeonhole fusion of global musical styles and contemporary dancefloor chops - has naturally raised expectations ahead of this second 12". This one comes from Deoke, a previously unheralded producer keen to present us with his Kudu Fantasy Versions. On A-side "Kamby" he smartly underpins loose and vibrant South American hand percussion with the locked-in pulse of drum machine rhythms, throwing trippy electronics, rich Afrobeat bass and tropical sounds on top. While impressive, it's nowhere near as overwhelmingly positive as B-side "Saskwatch", where undulating synthesizer lines, jazzy guitar flourishes and rush-inducing chords wrap themselves around a killer, densely layered Afro-house groove.

Review: It is over to Danish producer Brian Desos Logstrup aka Desos now, for the fourth edition on Slow Down - following up some great ones by the likes of DJ Aakmael and The Nathaniel X Project. "House party" is an emotive, swing-fuelled groove that has already received great feedback from dancefloors across the world. The sultry deepness of "I Luv" takes it cues from classic Kenny Dixon Jr. while "Move" gets dusty and hypnotic on you in style. The release now comes with an added remix from the girl who is everywhere right now - Berlin based Cinthie of Beste Modus fame. We enjoyed her sexy and bumpin' rendition as much as the original in fact.

  1. Sweet Florence (7:52)
  2. Emotion (3:53)
  3. Sweet Florence (Kuniyuki edit) (9:25)
Review: Amongst those who dig for interesting, dancefloor-friendly electronic music from the early 1980s, Jacob Desvarieux's eponymous 1983 debut album is highly rated. It brilliantly joined the dots between zouk, boogie and beatbox electro, with all manner of other influences - reggae, most famously - being stirred into the producer's melting pot. Here, Endless Flight have licensed two of those tracks - the reggae-boogie brilliance of "Emotion", which includes subtle nods to a couple of disco classics, and the electro-zouk madness of "Sweet Florence" - and pressed them on a weighty 12" single. The latter track is given the re-edit treatment by Kuniyuki, who makes more of the layered guitar and organ solos, the original's wavy female vocals, and the killer original electro groove.

  3. Jacob F Desvarieux - "Rifyx" (Kuniyuki edit) (8:02)
Review: Endless Flight has done us all a favour by shining a light on the little-known work of French zouk maestro Jacob F Deviscaux. Here, they round of their retrospective series of "anthology" releases with another red-hot three-tracker. Side-one begins with "Rifyx", a wonderfully summery, horn-laden concoction from the musician's 1985 album Oh Madina that somehow joins the dots between jazz-funk, zouk and disco, before continuing with Deviscaux's 1982 Afro-funk/synth-boogie/electro-zouk production for vocalist Tala. Best of all, though, is Kuniyuki's stupendously celebratory flipside re-edit of "Rifyx", which turns the all-too-short original into an eight-minute slab of audio sunshine.

Review: DET90 aka Michael Galetto is a musician from Luxembourg, also known by the alias [vwaz] or beatmaker in electronic band SYNTHESIS. He claims to be majorly influenced by Detroit techno, '90s Chicago house and acid from Belgium and The Netherlands. The brilliant Transit EP starts out with the evocative title track; its epic strings, immaculate rhythm programming and deep elements all quite reminiscent of Landcrusing era Carl Craig. "The Room" however is more upfront and grooving with its raw 808 rhythms and backed by gritty monosynth melodies plus yet more emotive strings. Finally on the flip we've got "A.W.E." a sublime serving of Chi-town electronic blues; done the proper and original way like early Larry Heard, complete with sweet pan pipe presents for added authenticity. Tip!

Review: Unstoppable Dutch duo Detroit Swindle are back on their own Heist imprint, with some sensual deep house in the form of "Flavourism" which is the first single lifted from their forthcoming album entitled High Life. Featuring the smooth as silk vocals of the inimitable Seven Davis Jr, the release is accompanied by some fine remixes too: the sexy late night mood lighting of John Barera & Will Martin's Boomerang dub does the job fairly well, but let's not ignore the true highlight here - not one but two renditions by the mighty Pepe Bradock. The Atavisme boss and all round hero of the French house scene delivers the depe dan and dusty Bittersweet mix, in addition to a handy Urgent Spookapella.

Flow EP (12")
Cat: AMA 013. Rel: 03 Mar 14
  1. Flow (with Fault Lines)
  2. Flow (with Fault Lines - Zoo Look remix)
  3. Herman’s House
  4. Clouds Collide
Review: AMA013 sees itself graced by the Latvian-based, Edinburgh originating experimentalist, DFRNT. Birthed Alex Cowles, DFRNT gives three originals, aided by a club friendly mix of the aside belter, "Flow," from Bournemouth duo Zoo Look. Aside and title track, "Flow," (featuring Polish-born Fault Lines) sets the pace for the EP rather intensely, with it's chugging sub bass and reverberating, air-pipe melody. The track seems to continuously build on top of itself, with wompy bass stabs interjecting themselves as it begins to breathe. Zoo Look wrap up the original nicely, with a 4/4 centered, club-ready version fitted for an early night warm up. The intensity found on the aside can be washed over with "Herman's House," a slow-moving, after hours tune tinged with oriental gongs and vocal bits. Following is "Clouds Collide," a dreamy number that seamlessly soundtracks your journey through nostalgic bliss. It's a tune that floats seamlessly along, with it's whirling pads and sub thumps, fit for those "staring out of an airplane" epiphanies.

  2. Berwuda (Coyote remix)
  3. Berwuda (Tiago remix)
  4. Berwuda (Dawn Again remix)
Review: Rothmans continues to ply its unique line in collectible football cards... sorry we mean records, with this effort from Neil Diablo. Legendary England defender Bobby Moore is the man on the cover this time around, and the jam inside ranks as one of the slickest from the Rothmans camp in some time. There's a heated jacking energy pouring out of Diablo's original production, "Berwuda," all classic drum machine bite and rubbery acid bass with a firm foot on the gas when it counts. Coyote is the first of the remixers, bringing a tripped out cosmic twist to the original with the worldly percussion out front. Tiago's version is quite close to the original, operating more like a beat-heavy dub, and Dawn Again makes the most drastic alterations with an absolute thrummer of a version.
