  3. How RU Plush (feat Regular Fantasy) (6:16)
  4. Something About You (6:16)
Review: Sophie Sweetland (AKA D.Tiffany) delivered one of the strongest tracks on the Rhythms of the Pacific Vol 2 compilation 12", so it's little surprise to see Pacific Rhythm releasing an entire EP of her productions. Predictably, the Canadian serves up a quartet of tracks inspired by the glowing warmth of stretched-out sunsets and the morning-fresh feel of summer sunrises. She begins with the bustling instrumental hip-hop shuffle of "Get Back to You", before diving headfirst into the crystal clear waters of dub-flecked deep house trip "Blue Dream". Flip for Regular Fantasy hook-up "How RU Plush", a superb fusion of two-step influenced drum machine hits and ambient house chords, and the humid brilliance of "Something About You" (think dream house chords, ambient house textures and tribal drums).

  7. The Lodge
Review: D'Marc Cantu is a don when it comes to warm, rich synth-laden house and techno, with a sprinkling of electro sprinkled over his approach for good measure. Now he comes to Altered Moods with an album that finds him in a particularly mellow mood, not least on sultry opener "Always On My Mind". There's space for experimentation, as the offbeat snare patter of "Blanket Statement" demonstrates, but by and large this is all about undulating house delights. "Mozaic" is a particular highlight with its captivating synth design and dreamy demeanour, while "SteamFunk" revels in skippy broken beats that flirt with twinkling leads and lashings of delayed bass. Plenty varied but consistent in tone, this is a damn fine album from a seasoned pro.

Review: D'Marc Cantu's 2017 LP The Lodge was a high point for the ever prolific US producer, not to mention a jewel in Altered Moods' many-pronged crown. Now the label are revisiting one of the album highlights, "S.E.G," giving the punchy Chicago house jam another pressing before handing the reins over to a strong cast of remixers. The one and only Larry Heard plunges "S.E.G" into gorgeous, mystical realms of deep house spirituality like only he can, while Altered Moods boss Malcom Moore injects a different kind of spaced out energy to the track. Then Chicago Skyway finishes the package off with a distinctive version that reaches for a light and airy headspace while keeping the drums punchy and effective.

Review: REPRESS! Ann Arbor's D'Marc Cantu has really made a name for himself in the last few years releasing some soulful analogue house and techno workouts that could pass for early '90s originals on labels such as Creme Organization, Nation and M>O>S>. That Love You Feel is Cantu's latest offering and offers us more of his rusty, emotive and sublime takes on purist U.S. sounds. The title track sounds rather reminiscent of 808 State's classic "Pacific State" while the dark tunnelling techno vibe of "Lilk" and the peak time energy of the early Plus 8 Records sounding "1tweleve3one " provides a diverse range of moods and grooves. Final track "Fright Night" though, featuring Rodger Devine, is a warped and dirty epic and probably the real highlight on here.. but there's so much to choose from. Tip!

Review: Just when you think Pepe Bradock can't take us to new plains, along comes a new alias with a new vision. Raw futuristic jazz is the theme (as is often the case with Pepe) as we're eased in nicely with harmonic broken shuffles of "Willplayasong4u" before being plunged into trippy data chirps on "KM Zero" and square-pushing oddities on "@#$*?! Square Tones". We come out the other side learned and woken the jitterbug, sample-heavy psychedelic bump-funk of "Pepe XXX". 24th century business.

Pression (12")
Cat: BENGALA 001. Rel: 28 Mar 14
  1. Dadame - "Pression"
  2. Deep88 - "Blue Network"
Review: With their respective stars on the rise Dadame and Deep88 inaugurate the Bengala imprint with a pair of distinctive house cuts that promise much for the future. Dadame is up first with "Pression", which skips on a healthily swung beat made up from thin slithers of drums but offset by a sizable acid bassline that makes this one heavy grooving track. Deep88 meanwhile head into very different territory, keeping the groove on the straight and narrow and letting weighty pads and notes swell up in the track for a contemplative deep house track that counterbalances the cheeky groove of the A side perfectly.

  4. Strawman (4:50)
Review: DJ Spider, DJ Qu and Joey Anderson collaborator Dakini9 is back on New York's Plan B Recordings with a hot solo EP, and the girl means business. Four tracks of raw, gritty house music from the street: "Find Myself" features Danny Watts on the vocals and a wavey, dubbed-out collection of sounds; "Wali" is similarly contorted and grey-scaled albeit for the lonesome piano keys travelling across the arrangement. Over on the B-side there's the head-nodder that is "Potentiation", a punchy and direct dub-house chugger, and the stumbling groove of "Strawman", the oddest and most daring of the four cuts.

Southern Italy represents in the form of Salerno's Giovanni Damico with the funky and dusty soul heaven of "No Al Maltrattamento Dei Samples" while Lecce's finest Marcello Napoletano delivers the goods as always on the gritty house shenanigans of "Insignami". Elsewhere, there's Restoration's Lucretio (via Berlin of course) delivering some muscular, hardware oriented grooves on "I Piu Piccoli" while the north of The Beautiful Country represents too, rest assured, in the from of Bologna's Bassa Clan with the bouncy and swinging NYC circa '94 vibe of "Notte Brava".

  3. Never (St Germain revamp) (5:44)
Review: Chez Damier's timely resurrection via the Mojuba imprint has been one of the most revelatory things to happen in house music over the last ten years. While the man's heritage spoke for him, an endless slew of timeless gold for Prescription, the German label have opened the eyes of many young listeners to the power of Damier. For this latest 12", the producer is re-produced from some of the imprint's casuals; Oracy's opening edit of "Mental Breakdown" is the bomb here, a fine example of what real DEEP house should be about - everything from the percussion to the groove and synths is perfectly interlocked and absolutely devastating as it rolls out more and more of its 4-bar loops. Jeff & Greg's 'classic' remix of "Never" is a bumpy, amicable Chicago banger, but legend St Germain drops some real funk on his own re-work of the tune. Essential house gear!

  2. She Can't Love You (Egyptian Lover mix) (6:28)
  3. Maxx E (6:38)
Review: Under the Danced Til Midnight alias, DJ Andy Anderson has always produced music that eschews easy categorization. His two previous 12" singles successfully blended elements of funk, soul, disco, hip-hop, house and Afrobeat. This madcap, all-that-counts-is-the-dancefloor feel is continued on "She Can't Love You", which laces Ijeoma's soulful, R&B style vocal over a backing track that variously doffs a cap to fuzzy funk, boogie, breakbeat and disco-house. Similar could be said about the more breakbeat-minded "Maxx E", which feels like a reworked instrumental dub of the title track. Speaking of reworks, the EPs's highlight is arguably Egyptian Lover's punchy electro remake of "She Can't Love You".

  1. Thank U Jay (5:58)
  2. Anything With A Moonroof (7:25)
Review: After seriously impressing with output for Sound Signature, NDATL, Wild Oats, and Apron, Jay Daniel resurfaces with his own dedicated label Watusi High. With a title like School Dance, its little surprise that Daniel seems to be playing on his relative lack of years - the centre label also features a sketch of him as a youngster. There's little you could say is immature about A-side "Thank You Jay", though; a typically sparse affair built around dusty but bumpin' grooves, leisurely electronics and a brilliant synth bassline. "Anything With A Moonroof" is arguably even dustier, with freshly baked chords - ludicrously deep, even by his high standards - riding a jazz-flecked drum machine groove.

  4. Tracey Cooper - "Insight" (8:14)
Review: Detroit native Chuck Daniels is the man behind this all-star EP from the long running but less-than-prolific Sampled Recordings imprint. Daniels stars on side A, first hooking up with old pal Oliver Dollar for the Amp Fiddler-sporting post-fidget, tech-tinged deep house bump of "Do It", before roping in fellow Michigan producers Claude Young and Mike Clark for the low-slung, R&B-sampling late night bump of "Three Waves". Over on the flipside, high profile Detroiter steps up with the brilliant, sunshine-friendly business of "Woman Cry" - all snappy drums, rich soulful vocal samples and breezy piano solos - while Tracey Cooper wraps thought-provoking spoken word samples around an analogue-rich deep house groove with predictably strong results.

Review: Fresh from his impeccable Fabric mix, in which he lays down nothing but his own creations, Dan Snaith finally unleashes some of the mix's many highs for our own mixing pleasure. "Face To Face" has been anticipated for a while thanks to its sultry stripped-back loose-stringed groove and late-entering vocal, "Tin" sees Dan incorporating the same rising, crisp euphoria you find in his Caribou work as synths flutter over a chugging late 90s style house beat while "Xing Tian" shuffles and twists with a little more fuzz and unpredictability. Classic Daphni.

  4. Mellow-ism (6:33)
Review: Two years on from the release of Heaven Electric Part 1, DaRand Land returns to Saft offshoot Pulp with a second installment. There's something particularly evocative about the techno bass, cascading electric pianos and bittersweet chord progressions of snappy opener "Our Future Now", which also comes accompanied by a fine remix by Linkwood. His interpretation is little less than sublime, reinventing Land's original as a yearning chunk of melancholic electro. Flip for the retro-futurist Chicago deep house throb of "Emanation" - think Larry Heard with a touch of Ron Trent thrown in - and the slick, dub-influenced dream house wooziness of "Mellow-ism".

The Buffalo, NY based producer serves up some good ol' fashioned deepness on the new Collection Of Perspectives EP. There's deep hypnotic soul to get those emotions running free like on "On Rotation", the life-affirming groove of "Testi-Motional" is worthy of entering the creates of Alton Miller or Ron Trent, and "Flash Perception" allows for something a bit more upbeat and bumpin' for good vibes later on in the night. Review: Without attracting much hype, Das Komplex was responsible for some of the most enjoyable, dub-fuelled disco and Balearic releases of 2016. He's started 2017 in pretty confident fashion, too, delivering more fine fare via Father & Son Records & Tapes, People Must Jam and, now, Love On The Rocks. Interesting, this outing is a little bolder, woozier and weirder than some outings, though his love of reverb and delay remains a constant. "Szlugi" is an eccentric fusion of clattering drum machine percussion, trippy synthesizer motifs and lo-fi electronics, while "Polenz" effortlessly joins the dots between cosmic disco, jazz-funk and sample-heavy deep house. Best of all, though, is epic flipside "Flauta", a musically rich, Clavinet-heavy dub disco affair that rises and falls for 13 spellbinding minutes.

Review: After his last year debut on FASRAT Das Komplex is on fire - after EPs for Young Adults and Pets Recordings here he is again with a brand new 12" showing his versatility and ability to seamlessly blend multiple genres. All tracks on "Pudding" show clearly his dub and reggae influences applied to a light as a feather deep house rhythm frame, subtly infused with cosmic stylings and some synthpop nostalgia. At the same time, solid grooves carry Das Komplex' trademark melodic hooks - resulting in proper heads music that would work perfectly on any dancefloor - and any radio alike. "Pudding" sounds like a perfect teaser for Polish producer's debut artist album - due later this year on FASRAT.

Review: The Manuscript mission rolls on unabated as the Ukranian label pairs long lost deep house gems with more contemporary productions. Slam Mode's "Morning Side Dr" is a gorgeous cut laden with plush synth tones to melt the hardest of dancers, while Dennis DeSantis' "Leisure" feeds touches of EBM into a mellow, dubby construction that spans styles with ease. Label boss Vincent Inc joins up with Jon Da Silva for "Thinkin About U", which Questionmarq turns into a delightfully quirky remix before Sasha Makin and Suntetic round the EP off with the epic "Drumatik".
