  1. Urania (5:13)
  2. Flotenmelodie (6:17)
  3. Turkischer Tee (7:32)
Review: Live and direct from the slaughterhouse; Stabil Elite / BAR / The Kloom member Lucas Croon returns to Themes For Great Cities with his first full solo EP. Riddled with spacious kosmiche tones throughout, "Urania" sets the tone. A slo-mo sojourn on the trans Europe express, it succeeds in easing you into the EP and hitting you hard with rich synth textures. "Flotenmelodie" is a much more abstract affair with a delicious drone / wall of sound aesthetic that morphs and mutates and twists itself inside out for three minutes before lilting guitars completely change the atmosphere. Finally "Turkischer Tee" thrusts us back into reality with a heady dancefloor jam that's kinda reminiscent of Todd Terje's remix of Simon Baker's "Plastik" in its momentum but laced with heaps more musical elements.

  4. Edmundy - "Aurora Borealis" (9:00)
  5. J Wax - "Digits" (6:32)
Review: More from Ben Rothes and Schmitt's Dundee-based Hilltown Disco imprint, which has so far failed to disappoint since launching in early 2017. The most dominant artist on this third label outing is extended family member Crossmods. The producer makes a big impression on the A-side, serving up two bustling electro workouts (of which acid-fired opener "Visualised" is our pick) and a pleasingly spacey 4/4 number that sits somewhere between rolling deep house, Vangelis and pitched-down Detroit techno. You'll find more far-sighted space exploration on the flip, where Edmundy's surging rocket ship of a cut, "Aurorea Borealis" is joined by Hilltown Disco regular J Wax's EBM-esque late night throb-job "Digits".

  6. Night Heat (AD Bourke remix)
Review: Organic Analogue broadens its remit on this killer boogie inflected diversion from Italian producer Croza. Where the label has been often associated with deeper techno and electro, it sounds right at home exploring the Moog bass licks and snappy drum programming that pours like a fine wine out of every track. "Night Heat" is the perfect lead track, all steamy synth throb and funky guitar licks, while "Feel" turns up the pressure with a proto house burner that would have set the Paradise Garage alight. Also look out for a rare appearance from AD Bourke, who cruises on to the record to deliver a blissed out version of "Night Heat" for the smokiest of sundown situations.

  1. Track 1 (6:38)
  2. Track 2 (6:19)
Review: This great anonymous artists project is rumoured to be the guys behind the Cestraw and Soul Notes labels... but enough of the guessing games and onto the music! There's absolutely no guesswork when it comes to this series of wicked 10" releases; they've been pretty good so far. On the A side is some smooth and jazzy groove that samples Alfonso's old digger's delight "This Is Underground" and indeed it is pretty sweet. On the B side we're sure is a certain Moodymann track that has had an edit and it is one utterly sublime serving of deepness!

Cat: CRUE 03. Rel: 19 Feb 13
  1. Track 1 (6:04)
  2. Track 2 (6:23)
Review: With two releases already under their belt, the quintessential anonymous producer Crue is back with another exercise in dynamic analogue house and techno. "Track 1" is a steady 90s house workout, rich with warm chord stabs and a punchy beat, primed for slotting in amongst other garage shuffle revivalists. "Track 2" is where things get spicy with the primal, Detroit-weighted clatter of the drums falling in an almost-breakbeat, and the melodic stabs zipping in overhead. It's a staggeringly fresh sounding track, even whilst using methods of the past. Whoever they might be, Crue is clearly in command of some serious kit and a keen ear for what works,

  1. Crustation - "Flame" (Mood II Swing Border Infinty dub)
  2. 51 Days - "Paper Moon"
  3. Terence FM - "Feelin Kinda High"
Review: Ralph Lawson's position at the helm of the 20:20 Vision label and Leeds' infamous Back To Basics means he's the perfect pick to draw out some classics and give them a fresh airing. The three tracks he's presented here are essentials in anyone's collection, leading in with the arresting deep house swirl of Mood II Swing's "Infinity dub" of "Flame" by Crustation. 51 Days' "Paper Moon" is a more emotionally flamboyant jam, but no less unique and curious in its make up, all cinema strings and bubbling keys with a seriously sensual undercurrent. Terence FM's "Feelin Kinda High" is absolute deep house gold dust, all massive drums and punchy bass, addictive vocal and naught else.

  4. Black Science Orchestra - "New Jersey Deep" (Lost In Time edit) (5:47)
Review: The 20/20 Vision offshoot Basic Vision continues to mine the folklore of the legendary Back To Basics with a selection of carefully selected deep cuts from the history of house music. Chris Cuevas' "Hip Hop" already sounded strong when Masters At Work chunked it up in dub form, and then Rob Mello perfected the jam when he performed an extended edit on the breakbeat fuelled jam. Eddie Fowlkes' "Where Will I Be?" is a classic slice of 90s vocal house, while Free Energy is an uptempo deep house jam for those feel good peak time moments. Black Science Orchestra sound utterly timeless on the soaring "New Jersey Deep," laying the soul on thick and keeping things fresh and funky throughout.

  1. Prologue (6:32)
  2. Peach Fuzz (6:03)
  3. Urlaub Kommt (5:25)
  4. Woman (5:55)
Review: There's been a fair bit of hype surrounding Cody Currie's first appearance on Secret Reels, and it's not hard to see why. Like the producer's previous EPs on Pusic, Better Listen and Razor 'N' Tape reserve, Peach Fuzz is full of languid, sun-kissed, heart-warming deep house goodness. We're particularly enjoying the bustling thrust of "Prologue", where wild jazz-funk style synth solos wrap themselves around a driving jazz-house groove, though the funk-driven, sample-heavy warmth of "Woman" and bouncy, flute-laden disco-house shuffler "Urlaub Kommt" both push it close. Speaking of disco-house, title track "Peach Fuzz" has "future peak-time anthem" written all over it.

Review: Cody Currie's self-titled EP on Pusic Records was one of the better deep house debuts of 2016. This follow-up for Better Listen is similarly impressive. It sees him showcase a range of tracks that fuse a hip-hop, sample-digging mentality with the dusty, soul-flecked deep house swing of Chicago and Detroit's jazzier producers. The rich and organic sounding opener "Hearty & Healthy"- all hip-hop vocal samples, spacey boogie synth breakdowns and MPC-driven deep house beats - is particularly alluring, though the 'Disco Mix' of "Dynamite" is also superb. The liquid deep house funk of "Beer Machine", where disco samples pop in and out of a rich backing track, feels like a late night anthem in waiting.

  1. Movin Smoke (6:30)
  2. Infinity I & II (5:33)
  3. Make Love (6:30)
  4. Magic City (5:51)
Review: On the two releases we've heard to date, Cody Currie has barely put a foot wrong, delivering a string of tracks that brilliantly join the dots between dusty, soul-flecked U.S deep house and hip-hop style sample-based beat jams. For this outing on Razor 'n' Tape Reserve, he applies the same approach to the world of disco and boogie. So, we get the rolling, sun-kissed warmth and gentle filter tweakery of wide-eyed disco house shuffler "Movin' Smoke", the slack-tuned jazz snares, swirling chords and bubbly synthesizer samples of "Infinity I & II" and the swirling, string-drenched orchestral disco-house bounce of "Magic City". Arguably best of all, though, is the more driving "Make Love", where Currie's ability to select and manipulate samples within a bumping deep house framework is best exemplified.

  4. Dirtyelements & Drunkdrivers - "National Security" (Medlar remix) (5:53)
Review: Following recent solo EPs from Cody Currie and Marcel Lune, Pusic Records reverts to the multi-artist blueprint with which it made its name. Currie kicks off the EP with "One For You", a lolloping, mid-tempo chunk of bass-heavy disco house with killer samples and filtered breakdowns aplenty, before Joe Corti lays down a chunk of rich, Chez Damier-meets-Soundstream style chunky deep house warmth. On the flipside, Dirtyelements and Drunkdrivers combine on the loopy but loose disco-house grooves of "National Security", before Medlar gives it the remix treatment. The Wolf Music regular's tasty rework is something of a fusion treat. The fantastic rhythm track doffs a cap to both breakbeat-driven hip-house and original '80s electro, while the rubbery bassline and sweaty vocal stabs both add serious heat to proceedings.

Review: The team behind upstart imprint De La Groove has done a fine job on this compilation style extravaganza, which features tracks from an impressive selection of hotly tipped producers. Highlights include the bouncy, shirts-off loop-disco of Cody Currie's "ACE, At The Point of Collapse", the super-groovy, jazz-flecked deep house warmth of Demuir's "Let's Get In It", the effervescent sweetness of Black Loops' summery roller "French Affair", and the fluttering flute solos of Hotmood's goodtime jazz-funk revision "Voyage To The Onda". The purest expression of jazzy, smoky deep house is provided by COEO, whose clarinet-sporting "Azzurro" is probably our pick of a very strong bunch.

Review: Dan Curtin's musical quest began in early 1990s Cleveland and continues today in Berlin, where the pioneering DJ and producer carries on defying conventions and pushing boundaries.
Curtin's discography dates back to 1992, with his first releases for Detroit's 33RPM Records and Belgium's Buzz Records. He soon inked his own production hub, Metamorphic Recordings. Curtin's unwillingness to restrict himself to a singular style has been instrumental to releases like his albums Silicon Dawn, Web Of Life and Art & Science on Peacefrog Records, and work for further influential imprints such as Strictly Rhythm and Sublime.

Now he's elaborating his impressive discography yet again with an uplifting yet pumping EP for Turquoise Blue Recordings. A label that was founded to release house music that's deep, groovy and underground.
Featuring 3 originals and oneAnalogue Cops Remix, it's clear that Dan Curtin and Turquoise Blue Recordings make a good team.

Review: A second edition of the Various Artists Backpack EP, from French house label D3 Elements pulls together some key producers; Detroit soulful house star Terrence Parker is back once again, and joined by D-Knox, Dan Curtin and TechElectro. Curtin gets the ball rolling with "House Spirits," a summery, feel good house roller with trilling keys and organic chords all making for a jazzy vibe. Then comes a more synthetic and abstract cut, "Stars That Never Die", from TechElectro aka the fearsome American techno duo of Solid Gold Playaz, who also release as Dark Matrix. On the flip side, D-Knox aka Groove Man offers "Summer Beach Time," a cool as you like track with breezy chords, radiant pads and wooden sounding percussion flapping along next to the drums. Then it is down to Terrence Parker to close with the laid back, deep and soothing "So Beautiful," a sweet as you like house jam with magic chords and plenty of heart warming grooves.

Review: Given his love of dusty sample manipulation, obscure source material, hazy deep house grooves and jazzy hip-hop beats, it's perhaps unsurprising that Robert "Cuthead" Arnold is on Mad Mats and Tooli's radar. Arnold is predictably in fine form on this first outing for the duo's Local Talk label. Fuck That Shit is packed full of highlights, not least the bumping title track, where cut-up hip-hop vocal samples ride a bustling, bumping, snare-heavy rhythm track. Also impressive is the similarly minded "Get Down" and "Potato Express", which is warm, jazzy, positive and laden with tasty jazz-funk, soul and disco samples. As usual, he rounds things off with a dash of blazed, Dilla-esque MPC abuse, in this case instrumental hip-hop shuffler "What Can I Say".

Review: John Wilcox has been slowly disseminating crusty hardware jams for some six years now, in which time he's appeared as Cyclonix on Horn Wax, and now he nips over to Tusk Wax for more robo-charged antics in the curious corner of grubby, electro tinged house music the label orbits. "Telemachus" is a dreamy opening number that keeps the spook level up to maximum and the reverb voluminous throughout. "Synth Run" has a bit more bite, but not at the expense of atmosphere. Whatever/Whatever get hold of "Telemachus" and strip it down to a sparse skeleton of a track, and then Wilcox rounds the record off with the steppy ambient excursion "Ronin Love (dub)".

Review: Madrid's Jose Rico of Downbeat Records has also previously released on Semantica and ELEVE and now teams up with Leonid as Cygnuss for some soulful deep techno on Night Drive. Freebeat has previously brought us Chicago deep4life legends Chris Gray and Da Rand Land: so they know what's what! We particularly enjoyed the high tech soul of "Gamma" and "Delta"; emotive tracks which were reminiscent of the classic vibes of Transmat or Strobe; you'd swear they were lost tapes from 1990. The beatless journey "Ycyg" has that early 90's kind of classic vibe too but more of the UK bleep techno variety. There's a right stomper in the form "Arsec" whose tough as nails 909 and 303 workout is reminiscent of the best of Plus 8. Definitely one for the nostalgists, matter of fact it's highly recommended!

  4. Waiting 4 Visa (Bergqvist remix) (5:24)
Review: Parisian house hero D'Julz (real name Julien Veniel) is a veteran producer, whose recording and DJing career has spanned over 20 years. He originally released the Houdini EP via his Bass Culture imprint back in 2015 and it enjoyed moderate success - but he's now determined that the time is right for the remix package: better late than never! We must say it was worth the wait. Windy City ghetto house icon DJ Skull is still at it. But he's certainly not as bangin' these days, as he was in the '90s - when he had seminal releases on DJax Up Beats and Relief Records. His rendition of the track is a sexy and slinky tech house cut, geared for the late night with sleek rhythms and lush hypnotic chords. The Mobilee affiliated Sebo K out of Berlin steps up to the challenge also, delivering a nice remix of "Serendipity". Likewise, forget the bubbly mid-noughties minimal techno that he first made his name with: his remix goes for a more classic Stateside sound, packed full of boompty bass and swing fuelled rhythms. Finally, Swedish deep house expert Henrik Bergqvist delivers some dusty, low slung acid on his rendition of "Waiting 4 Visa".

Review: D'Marc Cantu is a don when it comes to warm, rich synth-laden house and techno, with a sprinkling of electro sprinkled over his approach for good measure. Now he comes to Altered Moods with an album that finds him in a particularly mellow mood, not least on sultry opener "Always On My Mind". There's space for experimentation, as the offbeat snare patter of "Blanket Statement" demonstrates, but by and large this is all about undulating house delights. "Mozaic" is a particular highlight with its captivating synth design and dreamy demeanour, while "SteamFunk" revels in skippy broken beats that flirt with twinkling leads and lashings of delayed bass. Plenty varied but consistent in tone, this is a damn fine album from a seasoned pro.

Review: D'Marc Cantu's 2017 LP The Lodge was a high point for the ever prolific US producer, not to mention a jewel in Altered Moods' many-pronged crown. Now the label are revisiting one of the album highlights, "S.E.G," giving the punchy Chicago house jam another pressing before handing the reins over to a strong cast of remixers. The one and only Larry Heard plunges "S.E.G" into gorgeous, mystical realms of deep house spirituality like only he can, while Altered Moods boss Malcom Moore injects a different kind of spaced out energy to the track. Then Chicago Skyway finishes the package off with a distinctive version that reaches for a light and airy headspace while keeping the drums punchy and effective.

Review: REPRESS! Ann Arbor's D'Marc Cantu has really made a name for himself in the last few years releasing some soulful analogue house and techno workouts that could pass for early '90s originals on labels such as Creme Organization, Nation and M>O>S>. That Love You Feel is Cantu's latest offering and offers us more of his rusty, emotive and sublime takes on purist U.S. sounds. The title track sounds rather reminiscent of 808 State's classic "Pacific State" while the dark tunnelling techno vibe of "Lilk" and the peak time energy of the early Plus 8 Records sounding "1tweleve3one " provides a diverse range of moods and grooves. Final track "Fright Night" though, featuring Rodger Devine, is a warped and dirty epic and probably the real highlight on here.. but there's so much to choose from. Tip!

Review: Just when you think Pepe Bradock can't take us to new plains, along comes a new alias with a new vision. Raw futuristic jazz is the theme (as is often the case with Pepe) as we're eased in nicely with harmonic broken shuffles of "Willplayasong4u" before being plunged into trippy data chirps on "KM Zero" and square-pushing oddities on "@#$*?! Square Tones". We come out the other side learned and woken the jitterbug, sample-heavy psychedelic bump-funk of "Pepe XXX". 24th century business.

Pression (12")
Cat: BENGALA 001. Rel: 28 Mar 14
  1. Dadame - "Pression"
  2. Deep88 - "Blue Network"
Review: With their respective stars on the rise Dadame and Deep88 inaugurate the Bengala imprint with a pair of distinctive house cuts that promise much for the future. Dadame is up first with "Pression", which skips on a healthily swung beat made up from thin slithers of drums but offset by a sizable acid bassline that makes this one heavy grooving track. Deep88 meanwhile head into very different territory, keeping the groove on the straight and narrow and letting weighty pads and notes swell up in the track for a contemplative deep house track that counterbalances the cheeky groove of the A side perfectly.
