Review: Originally released on Shelter Records way back in 1993, the Atmosphere EP from US house icon Kerri Chandler remains a great example of the New Jersey producer's sublime touch when it comes to driving instrumental house music. Some 22 years on, this new edition from Shelter demonstrates the qualities of Atmosphere remain undimmed, put simply the four tracks possess a certain energy that is undeniably timeless. If house music is a feeling, then cuts such as "Climax 2" and "Atmosphere 2" prove that emotion is that feeling. A classic 12" that any self respecting house DJ needs in their collection stat!

Review: Iconic Deep House label Large Music returns to the vinyl market with a limited repress of the classic Kerri Chandler release Return 2 Acid. First pressed in 2005, this was the 100th release on Large and has been out of print for 10 years. The A side features Kerri's powerhouse tribute to the glorious days of Acid House laced with driving beats and an incessant 808 acid line. On the flip side Kerri goes old-school, this time with an electro Afrika Bambaataa influenced jam entitled Planet Sonic. Also included for this special reissue is the unreleased Acapella of Return 2 Acid solidifying this as a true collectors item.

  1. Checkmate (6:27)
  2. Checkmate (Cinthie remix) (7:23)
  3. Checkmate (Steve Rachmad remix) (8:02)
Review: Kerri Chandler has history with Watergate, having previously contributed to their acclaimed mix series back in 2014. "Checkmate" is his first 12" for the imprint since, and sees him deliver a cheery chunk of synthesizer-heavy positivity that may remind some listeners of the more sparkling end of Italian dream house. Certainly, the baggy piano riffs and jaunty synth bassline reminded us of all-time classic "Sueno Latino", and "Checkmate" is no doubt capable of soliciting the same kind of boisterous response when dropped at the right time. Cinthie delivers the first remix, opting for a polished but groovy deep house interpretation, before Steve Rachmad places Chandler's bold piano riffs atop a crunchy techno rhythm track with predictably impressive results.

Review: Back to 99: Flash Forward continue their impressive archive work with this killer follow up to the run of Raw Elements classics over the last few months. Heading due south from NYC to New Jersey, we're presented with an absolute pearl from Kerri Chandler's extensive collection: "My Old Friend". Timeless chords set the scene with soulful stateliness while Kerri's classic strut maintains all the energy after 18 years. "We Can" and its reprise continue Chandler's soulful thrust with more focus on those classic Jersey organs. Flash Forward aren't messing around with these represses.

  4. Kerri Chandler & Jerome Sydenham - "Powder" (Jimpster remix) (7:17)
Review: This is a deliciously simple idea, impeccably executed. It sees a quartet of contemporary producers take it in turns to remix archival tracks by Madhouse boss (and all round legend) Kerri Chandler. Dutch duo Detroit Swindle steps up first, delivering a bustling, bass-heavy, interpretation of '92 jam "Get Out" that sits somewhere between booming, warehouse-friendly pump and fluid, disco-influenced NYC bounce. Josh Butler's take on the Chandler-producer Dreamer G anthem "I Got That Feeling" is an organ-laced, 21st century U.S garage treat, while Peggy Gou's interpretation of 1993's "I Need You" effortlessly joins the dots between vintage New Jersey deep house and wild acid tweakery. Finally, Jimspter delivers a fine version of "Powder" that's simultaneously lusciously warm and pleasingly bouncy.

  1. Orbicular (6:49)
  2. WYW (6:26)
  3. Let It Happen (feat Owain K) (6:52)
Review: Paul Cottam's Ruff Draft label enjoyed a great first year in 2014, delivering white-hot material from the man himself, LK and Romansoff, amongst others. For the imprint's first missive of 2015, Cottam has recruited Cardiff-based rising star Chesus, who previously impressed via releases on Local Talk, 4 Lux and Catapult. There's naturally much to admire, from the acid-era electronics, delicate synth strings and shimmering chords of opener "Orbicular", to the DJ Gregory-ish stabs, wonky electronics and dense, organic-sounding percussion of "WYW". Bristol-based producer Owain K - best known for his hook-ups with Jamie Anderson on Dessous - lends a hand on "Let It Happen", a rather fine slice of warm, immersive, Balearic deep house goodness seemingly inspired by the Vangelis classic of the same name.

  1. I Can Prove It (5:58)
  2. Free Love (6:50)
Review: Chevals, who brilliantly describes himself as a "French house producer, disco cutter and horse", came to our attention last year via a fine debut on Better Listen. You'll find further proof of his "rising star" status on this tasty, two-track contribution to Kolour LTD's 10-inch series. Both tracks are essentially re-edits, though there are enough additional touches and new musical elements to elevate them way beyond your average scalpel re-arrangement. The Frenchman kicks thing off with "I Can Prove It", a gently tooled-up and reworked version of a soaring, glassy-eyed disco-soul gem that will sound fantastic at this summer's open-air events. Flipside "Free Love" is an altogether more low-slung affair, with a fizzing, funk-fuelled groove building towards a rush-inducing Philadelphia Soul-goes-disco-house conclusion.

Review: Following up that awesome last release by Closed Paradise and one by Thatmanmonkz, the mysterious Parisian Chevals joins District Of Columbia based Better Listen for their eighth outing, after making his debut on NYC's Homage with a global affair. The sultry and bumpin' disco house of "Hot!" starts things burning up fairly quick on the A side, looped to perfection much like early Rick Wade or DJ Sneak. It is followed by the smooth, early evening boogie-down vibe of "Layover" featuring yet more come hither vocals and hypnotic xylophone action. On the flip, we have a surprise in the from of the blunted hip-hop joint that is "Homecoming" getting that gritty MPC feel on, with choice use of sampling.

  1. Special (A Special edit) (8:39)

Review: Second time around for Che "Chezus" Ahmed's "Special", a sought-after disco-house bomb that's been in demand since it first appeared on Local Talk back in 2013. It's easy to see why copies of the EP on which it was featured now change hands for vast sums: in its original form (featured here on the B-side), the cut is a celebratory, rush-inducing disco treat, with Ahmed making great use of elements borrowed from an inspired O'Jays record. Like the best sample-based disco-house, it achieves just the right balance between original 1970s flavours and contemporary house grooves. This time round, you also get an extended re-edit that teases out the rush just that little bit longer. These won't hang around for long, so snap one up while you can.

Osunlade takes on the evergreen "Nangu Jubo" himself with a hazy, sun-warped twist on the shiny soulful house bubbler. Flip for an unreleased acidic take on the lolloping "Mind" by Chiavetta himself while trippy sub-aquatic jacker "Hunters" closes the show. Kusonga.

Review: Chicago Damn is the latest esteemed producer to shore up at Marcel Vogel's Intimate Friends label, following the Hypoleon EP with some forthright, sample heavy funk house concoctions that nod to his other work on Wolf Music and the like. "Bunny Hoppin" is a rowdy but soulful belter with a peppy tempo and an addictive line in looped up samples, while "Flush" takes things slower and dustier without getting too lost in the undergrowth. "The Truth" lays its samples out in bold, bright brushstrokes with a pattering, psyched out undercurrent for deeper, sunkissed moments, and then "Tipsy" finishes the EP off in a playful tryst of re-pitched piano trills and scuffed beats.

Review: Fuss-free London producer Chocky has graced some mighty fine labels over the years, including City Fly, Secret Reels, Dessous, Disconnected and, most recently, Flumo. Here the low-key deep house mainstay inaugurates a new label, Shhhhhhh.co, in the process serving up his first release of 2018. The headline attraction is "Chakattack", a deep, melodious and soul-flecked trip through Chaka Khan samples that come in two distinctive flavours. There's the smooth, dreamy and slightly spacey deep house vibes of the "House Mix" and the enveloping, off-kilter shuffle of the arguably superior "Broken Mix". Further deep house sensuality is provided on the flip, where "Dans La Chambre" does the horizontal mambo with bongo-laden beats, sub-heavy bass and some seriously seductive chords.

Review: Chopstick & Johnjon are Chi-Thien Nguyen and John Muder; head honchos of Suol Music based out of Berlin. Versions 2 follows up the first volume which was released back in 2012 and on this one we've got some really great grooves. Take for instance the sunny, bouncy and slightly retro flavoured deep house of "Keep It Real Son" which will appeal to fans of Tuff City Kids or Kim Brown. Also there's the cowbell driven nu-disco boogie of "I Need Your Love" which is absolutely infectious and "String For Fools"; definitely the most serious track on here and will create some sure moments of dancefloor drama with those strings reminiscent of hits like "Full Clip" and, well.. "Strings For Life" of course!

Review: Previously spotted on labels such as John Dimas' Elephant Moon and Nil, Christian AB delivers his second full solo EP and sounds like a far more mature producer. Warm, hardware deep house is the order of the day, and "Luna De Leo" makes a fine case in point with its Moog-esque basslines and plush pads. "Flysergic" is a playful jam with techy undertones in its sci-fi synth work, and "Anxwhyitme" takes an edgier route into bugging electronic pulses and eerie harmonics. "Sunshine Song" completes the set with a sweet natured trip into beat-laden deep house for the good times crowd.

Review: Since launching Peach Discs earlier in the year, Shanti Celeste has done a terrific job in showcasing material from little known or previously unheard artists. Happily, she's adopted the same approach on 12" number four, offering a platform to fast-rising Toronto DJ/producer Cindy Li AKA Ciel. This debut 12" is a pretty assured and attractive affair, with Li utilizing the A-side to showcase the punchy electro rhythms, snappy drum machine handclaps, glacial electronics and Mood Hut style new age melodies of "Electrical Encounters". You'll find more glassy-eyed, sunrise-friendly positivity on the B-side in the shape of the bustling and tuneful "Elevate (Go Off Mix)". She rounds off a fine EP with analogue deep house box jam "Rain Dance", where ultra-deep riffs rise and fall above a brilliantly programmed drum machine rhythm.

Review: Since making his debut way back in 2002, Franco Cinelli has giddily hopped between labels, releasing well-regarded material on such imprints as Ilian Tape, Esperanza, Bass Culture, Raum and, most recently, Untold Stories. This first outing on Savor is notable for A-side "Liquid Funk", a 13-minute-plus workout that fixes subtle but spacey electronics to a killer, bassline-driven tech-house groove. There are subtle changes throughout, but for the most part it's a hugely hypnotic, locked-in experience. Elsewhere, the Argentine producer wanders closer to dreamy deep house territory on "Jack Bass", and joins the dots between New Jersey organs and stripped-back tech-house-funk on the decidedly wonky "D-Down".

Review: It's early days for Cinthie, having previously appeared on a split disc with stevn.aint.leavn on Beste Modus earlier this year. Here the emergent artist gets a whole 12" to themselves on the ever steady Brighton label Black Key, and the results are exemplary. From the title alone it shouldn't take too long to work out what "House Rhythms" is all about. With warm key stabs and a classic set of drums there's plenty to grab hold of on this refined slab of deep house, but it's actually "Liberty" that takes the prize. With its Rhodes-esque chords chopping out a simple but deadly riff, this is the one that will get shoulders shaking from the bar to the speaker stack.

Review: East Berlin's Beste Modus clan return with the fifth instalment of the series and it's another whopper! Cinthie lays down "Ghetto Bastard", a head-strong and kick-fuelled jerker reminiscent of Dance Mania's early output and "Jaaam", a deeper house joint with a subtle garage swing. On the flip, "Cityscape" by Ed Herbst is a spaced-out deep house cake with plenty of delay and a psychedelic touch, whereas "When I'm In The Elevator is bumpier and more club-ready. Another tight little EP from this crew!

Review: Cinthie's Berlin Based house imprint returns with a new EP entitled Beste Modus 07, featuring tracks from the label boss and former Stattbad resident herself on the A side. There is the early '90s Jersey sound of "Back To Garage" then the equally stateside sounding throwback sounds of "Hold'em". On the flip, label co-founder stevn.aint.leavn. serves up the soulful and emotive boompty business of "Isn't It" and the raw and jackin' stomp of "Sub Marino": a fine DJ tool closing out this nice EP in style. Fresh from a strong January release, the Beste Modus crew look set to take 2017 by storm, this time with a versatile record that yet again raises the bar within the contemporary house scene.

Review: Since the We_r House label appears to be jointly run by Berliners the Willers Brothers and Cinthie, it seems fitting that both artists make telling contributions to the imrpint's second 12". Cinthie handles side A, serving up both the early Morning Detroit techno hypnotism of "Control" and the chunky and tactile, U.S style deep house bump of "Palm Trees in Wedding". The Willers Brothers' "Goes On and On" offers a return to the locked-in dancefloor hypnotism that marks out Cinthie's EP opener, albeit with a few more dreamy melodic elements to entice the deep house heads, before those tuneful, warm and atmospheric vibes are further explored on the skipping New Jersey vibes of closer "Don't Slip".

BE features the vocals of former Azari and III member SYF, and an exclusive remix from Hercules & Love Affair. The original mix of BE comes through with Citizenn's much loved retro-futuristic sound that's overlaid with SYF's spell binding vocals. Hercules & Love Affair's remix follows, and maintains the darkness of the original before taking a playhouse-style approach that's riddled with wonky, cosmic hues. Rounding off the EP is Citizenn's Warehouse Dub Remix - a tough, and atmospheric techno edit, forged in the depths of the world's most renowned techno haunts including Fabric, Panorama Bar and Ibiza's DC10 - and a firm influence on Citizenn's musical direction. A further remix from Forrest and 2020Vision's very own Ralph Lawson will also feature on the digital release.
"BE was put together over a number of months during a hectic touring schedule, Cedric (SYF) and I were messing around with some sounds and after a few hours we had the makings of the track. I wanted to do something a bit more emotive something that could be listened to at home and in the club. Andy (Hercules & Love Affair) coming on board for the remix was like a dream come true for me. I remember seeing them on the first UK tour and have been a fan ever since. Hope you enjoy this package as much as I enjoyed putting it together" says Citizenn.
Citizenn is an artist with many strings to his bow. Having already made massive impact with slew of releases on discerning labels including Madtech and Love Fever Records, and subsequently named DJ Mag's 'Best Breakthrough Artist' of 2013, BE takes Citizenn into 2015 with his strongest ammunition yet.

Review: Slow Town's 17th release from Melbournes Luis CL is an ode to analogue jams. The Cran town EP shows what Luis CL (one half of the Zanzibar Chanel duo and co-founder of Ruff Records) is know for: Dirty but groovy drum arrangements, analogue synths and dreamy melodies and his kind of lo-fi and blurry mixdowns with definitely some Detroit influences. The three tracks were recorded in one take during his studio sessions.
