Dub Grinder
Cat: DGIT 10. Rel: 27 Aug 20
  1. Dub Grinder (4:41)
  2. Winter Is Coming (4:39)
Review: Twisted times call for twisted music: Croydon OG Coki sends the summer off with a two-track headbutt of timeless proportions. "Dub Grinder" is a blast back to 2007 with its brazen horns and flabbery swagger. A track that's been lurking in Coki's sets for some time now and saw a very limited TP release last year, it's now yours to grind on vinyl for a limited time. Needed some extra spice? Flip for "Winter Is Coming" where Coki sharpens up his signature angularities and reminds us who founded the wobble in the first place. Wrap up warm.

The Haunting
Cat: DDD 065. Rel: 05 Aug 20
  1. The Haunting (5:16)
  2. Help (4:39)
  3. Passage Of Arms (5:04)
  4. Skrrrt (5:04)
Review: BC badness on DDD: after a string of sizzlers on Duploc, ColtCuts returns to Truth's Deep, Dark & Dangerous imprint with four more bruisers. "The Haunting" takes the lead with some real sludgy, muddy, moody graveyard funk while "Help" brings on the creeps with a restrained sense of tension. Flip for "Passage Of Arms", a much more stripped back piece with a dagger-like staccato riff before "Skrrrt" completes the set on a spacious, trippy one. Another crucial one from the CC on the DDDD - the extra D stands for deadly.

Daega Sound
Cat: LODUBS 1220025. Rel: 26 Aug 20
  1. Gate Keeper (3:22)
  2. Second Strike (3:53)
  3. Second Strike (Kromestar remix) (5:20)
Review: LoDubs has been turning out delicious dub for nearly 15 years now, often as a bit of a lone ranger out on the west coast of America. One of its key prophets has been Vancouver's Daega Sound who has mapped the bass sound from dubstep into whatever it is called these days with real craft. Here he serves up two more compelling originals in "Gatekeeper" and "Second Strike". The former is filled with tension as the bass and hits lurch from one foot to the other and the latter is all manic loops and crashing hits. Kromestar closes out with a deadly remix that is more menacing than Mike Tyson in his prime.

Scrape EP
Scrape EP (12")
Cat: ARTKL 051. Rel: 13 Aug 20
  1. Scrape (4:43)
  2. Concrete (5:14)
Review: Felix Ruocco aka Deadcrow hails from The Hague, n the Netherlands, which is mostly associated with rip-snorting electro. He is a master of the dub, however, and now makes his debut on Artikal with a killer two tracker that has already been tearing up dubstep dancehalls. Opener "Scrape" has a real sense of character with its playful lead echoing a classic top line, while the reggae drums below are finished with a truly contemporary aesthetic. "Concrete" is all steel drums, wobbling low end and happy guitar riffs for sunny climes.

Survive EP (12")
Cat: HOO 03. Rel: 14 Sep 20
  1. Survive (3:13)
  2. 3D Passive (4:36)
  3. Survive (Om Unit remix) (3:43)
Review: Having slayed us with a whole slew of dispatches in the last year or so on the likes of Unchained and Vandal, not to mention his own fine line of self releases, HOST now comes correct on Sherelle's firebrand Hooversound label. Dedicated to the rave, it's another deadly body blow... 'Survive' sums up the angst of the time with its warped 808 cascades, '3D Passive' takes foundation elements like the pitched up vocal, skippy breaks and scuffy, gruff production to 2020's dark standards and Om Unit seals the deal with an exemplary remix. Hoover this one up quick sharp.

Tallawah (12")
Cat: NC 014. Rel: 03 Sep 20
  1. Tallawah/Stand Up Strong (4:25)
  2. Flippy Neck (4:12)
  3. Gods Gold (3:39)
Review: Jack Sparrow's Navy Cut returns with more smoking sounds as Manchester murker Maes makes his debut on the vinyl-only label. Following his cuts on the likes of Soil & Sound and Dub Communication, it's another adventure into the minimal unknown. 'Tallawah / Stand Up Strong' is total soundsystem dream. Just a big old flabby frequency doing a belly dance around soft-focus kicks, this truly comes to life when played on a big rig (when we can finally play on them again) Elsewhere the brilliantly-titled 'Flippy Neck' takes us back to the wobbly late 2000s before 'Gods Gold' closes the show with more of a digi dub energy; skippy kicks, reverbed melodica blasts and bassline strong enough to make you quit the ciggies in a jiffy.

This Damn Feeling
Cat: WPR 048. Rel: 04 Aug 20
  1. This Damn Feeling (5:25)
  2. Day & Age (4:45)
  3. Ghost (4:55)
  4. Renegade (4:21)
Review: Classical violinist / low-end-murker Opus returns to his White Peach family with this four track treat after a few exemplary outings on the likes of Chestplate and Simply Deep. "This Damn Feeling" takes the lead and sets the mood with drama. Its big boom bass and tight spine sitar twangs are followed by a full menu of ideas and explorations. "Day & Age" wriggles with that high end harmonic we all fell in love with in 2008 before twinkling arpeggios bring on the goosebumps like you'd never believe. Flip for more goodies... "Ghost" takes us to the Upside Down with its toxic waste bass and icy vocal shots before "Renegade" concludes the EP on a dank, sludgy one. This damn EP!

Dusted (12")
Cat: FAV 016. Rel: 03 Aug 20
  1. Dusted (4:49)
  2. Nameless & Nothing (5:00)
  3. No Fear I (4:46)
  4. If Not The Orb (4:45)
Review: Serious wax from Denver to Bristol: already a big deal digitally, Foundation Audio press up "Dusted" for some black matter murkery. Once again we find the Sub.mission resident getting busy with the fusions as strong notes of traditional dub, techno and dubstep all get the blend up. Right from the very start we're taken on a trip; the slimy 4x4 gutter funk of the title track kicks off the EP, the superb cosmic dubstep finale "If Not The Orb" brings us to the end with all unique shades in between. Essential even if you've already got the digis.

Life Without Meaning
Cat: SUBA 005. Rel: 22 Sep 20
  1. Life Without Meaning (6:33)
  2. Life Without Meaning (Kodama remix) (10:15)
  3. You Can Run Much Faster (4:05)
  4. You Can Run Much Faster (Ourman remix) (4:08)
Review: Barely a month has passed since German bass artist Soukah gave the world the powerful 'Deadly Snakebite' but now he returns with his debut on Gnischrew's burgeoning Sub Audio. Two originals, two versions; 'Life Without Meaning' is a sobering, contemplative piece led by a decaying arpeggio and distant, glitchy rhythmic textures while 'You Can Run Much Faster' hits with a lighter note; skippier breaks and a misty but ultimately hopeful piano roll. Meanwhile on the remixes, Kodama adds another four minutes to 'Life Without Meaning', flipping it into an unhurried 10 minute narrative while Ourman dices up the piano and twists the focus on 'You Can Run Much Faster' where things aren't quite as misty but the hope has turned into a much strong emotion. Get up and running 1today.

Advance EP
Advance EP (12")
Cat: FAV 017. Rel: 26 Aug 20
  1. Advance (feat Moss) (3:58)
  2. Sychronise (3:58)
  3. Bubbles (3:16)
  4. Ostrov (3:46)
Review: Foundation Audio continues to fly the flag for the deepest end of the dubstep spectrum with more bowel evacuating sounds, this time from Teffa. He draws on a rich history of sound system culture to really test your bass bins and lay down some killer low end wobbles. "Advance" (feat Moss) is an eerie opener with devastating bass and only the most subtle of synth details to keep you locked in place. "Bubbles" is another standout with its playful bassline sure to get big reactions, then "Ostrov" is a slow motion stepper with computer game melodies and real futurism.

Hermetica EP
Cat: MEDI 112. Rel: 13 Aug 20
  1. Chestlick (5:40)
  2. Hermetica (feat Sinerise) (4:53)
  3. Symbolism (5:36)
Review: At long last, Von D makes his Deep Medi debut and he's packing some serious Egyptian-Greek wisdom for the ride. We kick off with "Chestlick", a tune that lives up to its name with thick sludgy waves of low-end dynamics oozing out of the speakers. It's followed by the EP title track "Hermetica". Featuring the vocals of Sinerise, there's a deeper sense of contemplation as the wonky loose beats swagger with dubby hypnosis and all manner of trippy layers. Finally Von D signs out with "Symbolism". Tapping into the traditional dub style with consummate ease, it's the sound of Von D delivering an EP we've been eager to see for a long, long time. Salute.

Best Of Duploc Selects (limited 2xLP)
Cat: DUPLOC LPBOX. Rel: 26 Aug 20
  1. Juss B - "Sandman" (5:11)
  2. Feonix & A:Grade - "Prumeer" (4:40)
  3. Surreal & Somah - "Gibberish" (4:38)
  4. Ourman - "Harpy" (4:01)
  5. Mungk - "Sand" (3:17)
  6. Sam Cosmic - "Tale Of Now" (4:40)
  7. Ghostek - "Smoke" (4:12)
  8. Oddkut & Hotcut - "Mangal Sound" (4:11)
Review: The fourth but not quite final instalment of the DUPLOC SELECTS compilation series is a heavy hitting double 12" featuring two tunes from each of the previous four releases. Feonix & A:Grade's "Prumeer" is an early highlight with its spacious swagger and whip-snapping synth sounds depicting a desolate urban landscape, while for a totally different vibe the lush harp ripples of Ourman's "Harpy" is a great escape. With the complete 10-track Chapter III and Chapter IV compilations landing in October and November respectively, think of the final two sides of this release as a fine taster of what to expect.
