  1. If It's Not The Police
  2. If It's Not The Dub
Review: Zam Zam Sounds keep up the pressure with their fifth transmission so far this year (and 20th overall) and welcome Berlin-based soldiers Dub War and Infra into the fold with If It's Not The Police. Formerly a duo consisting of Benny Ill and Bill Robin, this 7" is the first release with the latter working solo under the guise and also his first collaboration with Marius Braun aka Infra. As with previous Zam Zam drops, the roots of dub culture are retained with If It's Not The Policea with a vocal cut backed by a dub rendition. Deep studio science and sound design paired with classic dub aesthetics, dubstep bass-weight, and halftime garage swing are very much in effect here and we hope this is the first of many collabs between the pair.

  4. Eastern Roots - "Elements" (dub mix) (3:41)
Review: Some 18 months have passed since Eastern Roots' last release, so it's good to see them back in action and in such fine form, too. The focus here is largely on the A-side hook-up with roots scene stalwart I-David. In both its original and Dub Mix variations, "Freedom Fighter" is an exercise in floor-friendly dub reggae rich in Augustus Pablo style Melodica solos, meandering delay trails, ricocheting percussion and heavy sub-bass. Over on side B, Eastern Roots goes solo on two versions of the more exotic and electronic soundsystem dub workout "Elements", with the decidedly trippy and mind-altering Dub revision being our pick.

  2. D-Operation Drop - "Fibers" (4:08)
  3. Ill_K - "Bomb" (5:21)
  4. Shu & Zygos - "Landfall" (4:42)
Review: Four years into their story, deep dubstep stalwarts Subaltern Records has decided to drop its first compilation style EP. Fittingly, Kaleidoscope Volume 1 begins with a contribution from a new addition to the label roster, Helktram. The producer's "Alter" is a rolling and undeniably heavy affair, with creepy horror strings and clandestine textures rising above crunchy snares, punchy kick-drums and a restless analogue bassline. Label regular D-Operation Drop serves up a skewed slice of vintage, spaced-out dubstep ("Fibers"), before Berlin-based Ill K dives deeper via the lo-fi drum hits, decaying audio textures and heavy sub of "Bomb". Finally, Shu and Zygos join forces for "Landfall", a Burial style dark ambient/dubstep fusion cut that reverberates at a slower than average tempo.

  4. Together In The Dust
Review: Having already hinted at it on his album Under The Ice, this is his first full sub-low exploration of the murky world of dubstep; and each of the four tracks on offer are true, hypnotic treats. All to be filed under the more rhythmical, loopy, techno-inspired dubstep sub category; "BCN" struts with fancy footwork and deep chilling synths, "Acid Step" slithers with a slinky, stripped back formula that'll work well for warm ups and transitions, "Need A Job" takes dubstep by way of Detroit while "Together In Dust" finishes the set with a truly trippy signature.

Review: It's about time! Berlin-based badman Ill K returns with his first release in two years, and the wait is most definitely worth it. Three stinking cuts ranging from dubstep to hardcore, "Warp 6" takes the lead and brings us all up to speed with its rolling breaks, cathedral-sized bassline and ethereal tones. Two hefty collaborations follow; "Ninja Technique" sees Chad Dubz joining the fray for a stern-and-spacious mechanical funk tear-up while "Walking Home" (feat. Koobas) flips the 140 feels into a savage breakbeat workout. Watch out for the classic GQ sample and be careful where you park your car next time.

Review: This Peace Man Time 12" brandishes two reggae classics spanning over 25 years updated by Dutch dons The Illuminated. First up is Junior Delgado's yearning solemn ballad "Tonight" where added weight is placed on the bottom end and a switch in focus is made from the original's funkier guitars to the version's more reflective instrumentation. Next up, we hit Leroy Mafia's "Peace Man Time" where the rework is more of a subtle approach to the drums and general production sheen. Both exemplary versions, Grand Ancestor are only two releases deep but already scoring serious respect.

Scavenger (12")

  2. Scavenger (TMSV remix)
Review: It's finally landed. Word of this driving slab of pneumatic techno-teased dubstep first emerged on FatKidOnFire in the spring of 2012. Powered by a pulsating heartbeat bass warp, enveloping synth washes and relentless rhythm dynamic that simply won't quit, it comes complete with a distinctive sitar hook that refuses to leave your ears for years. It's complemented by an equally disarming remix from TMSV where a snake-like percussion line takes the lead and the elements are dragged into a swamp of rich sub bass. Get scavenging as soon as you.

  2. Dub The Bass (3:07)
Review: Uprising Sounds returns to Indica with a powerful original and even heavier version. "Militant Dub" leads heavily on the main synth line that's almost oriental in its allure and mysticism. As the title suggests, the rhythm is persistent and just on the right side of rigid to maintain the essential funk. "Dub The Bass" is a much deeper exploration of the low end as the warping bass is allowed to turn itself inside out as the track progresses. Standard Indica procedure: only 500 have been pressed.

  2. Dubwise 07 (5:07)
  3. Release (5:33)
Review: The latest weighty four-tracker from Seven's Uprise Audio imprint comes from Indiji, an artist who has previously released a handful of digital-only singles. This first appearance on wax is a typically atmospheric and low-slung affair. On the A-side you'll find the tumbling sub-bass, mid-tempo beats and dreamy pads of "Original Pressing", where metallic hits and dub delays help create a thoroughly mind-bending mood. Flip for the more obviously reggae-influenced "Dubwise 07", all intergalactic electronics, ricocheting riffs and soulful vocal samples rising above a booming, deep dubstep groove, and the more atmospheric "Release", which boasts stabbing sub-bass motifs and an extended, utterly blazed intro.

  1. Inside The Cold Mountain
  2. Propulsion
  3. Rogue
Review: Fresh and direct from the Germanic quarter of the dubstep floor, Infra buries deep "Inside The Cold Mountain" and ironically finds some engagingly warm drones. This is thanks to a pensive lazy funk left lingering in the groans while the rhythm switches from deep to heavy with a light industrial lilt. "Propulsion" is a much more warped affair with a strange off-kilter loop on the kick that coyly hints at a skippy breakbeat but never gives anything away. "Rogue" brings us to an intricate percussion-heavy finale. With weasel-like Q&A stabs nipping in and out of the groove, it's the most mischievous of the trio.

Review: On his first full EP release and already steeped in praise from Duploc and Trusik, US newcomer Inyoka is making all the right noises. Here are four cases in point: the tripped out vocal sample dynamic on the VIP of "Echidna", the spacey funk and slurring soul of "LIA", the groaning, unsettling harmonic machine tones and sudden human vocal splash of "Program" and the rolling tech-laced stepper "Peregrine", Inyoka has set out his stall with clarity. We can't wait to hear what he brings next.

  5. Korin Complex - "The Person You Might've Been" (VGB remix) (5:57)
Review: Bleak Winter whip up another highly limited storm with this powerful 12 that combines two very different approaches to bass yet share a similar glacial spirit. Inyoka takes the A with two incredibly emotive trips; the brilliantly titled "Beryl" is a dreamy march through the thickest of snow while wrapped up in the cosiest roadman coat you've ever fleece-lined under the glaze of the northern lights while "Turbines" is a more poignant, turbulent flight back home. Flip for more of a concrete adventure as Korin Complex makes his grimey beats shiver with the jitters on "Interlinked" before icing you out with junglised two-step on "The Person You Might've Been". For added vinyl-only pleasure VGB shoves us in the deep freeze with his remix. Ain't no spring on the horizon.

  1. Persistent Dread
  2. Signal Motion
Review: Running rampant with a tub-thumping horror film drum pattern, this is dark drama on a cinematic scale. Taking in techno references along the way, the superbly-titled "Persistent Dread" thuds and thunders with carnal focus. For added darkness flip for "Signal Motion" where the riddim takes a more developed, polyrhythmic twist and sheet metal screams moan quietly in the fills. Ipman is on top of his game with these two cuts; essential for all dub and tech heads.

Review: Vinyl only vibes... Following the huge success of the agenda setting "Warehouse Dub" come two more horse power productions from two of the brightest sparks in the deep dubstep game. "Jigsaw" rattles with a nagging sub thump before breaking into a barely recognisable sample (King Tubby if we're not mistaken) then letting rip with an hot-stepping jungle finale. "Run" is equally dashing; bringing Eek-A-Mouse's "Runaway" right up to date with bucket loads of bottom end and a thundering end. Game changers, nothing less.

Review: Coming out of the ever-growing Young Echo collective in Bristol, Ishan Sound gets snapped up by Pinch for a bout on Tectonic that brings their mystical system-testing pressure to a wider audience. "Namkha" lurches forth on a distinctively swung half step rhythm, adding a curious lilt to the pan pipe synths that pea out of the track. "NN Special" takes the same theme and delivers an alternative version, keeping that nagging groove in place. Young Echo cohort Kahn steps up for a remix of "Namkha" that feeds some more gnarly soundsystem stylings into the mix, with a drop that's utterly understated and immeasurably malicious.

Cat: PENGSOUND 0021. Rel: 05 Jun 13
  1. Clash Of The Titans (Kahn remix)
  2. Clash Of The Titans (Hodge remix)
Review: Peng Sound return to Clash Of The Titans, their debut release from Young Echo member Ishan Sound and sound system veteran Ras Addis with this pair of remixes from two more Bristol figures in Kahn and Hodge. In original form, "Clash Of The Titans" was a superlative dancehall tee-off between riddim and vocalist, yet Kahn and Outboxxer Hodge are up to the task of reworking the track with their remixes having apparently been rigorously road tested in dubplate form by the respected selectors like Mala, Kowton and Pinch. Kahn is in Bandulu mode a remix that pays reverence to the original's heavy stepping rhythm, whilst Hodge takes elements of Ishan Sound's production and applies them to a 125bpm template, with the results sounding weirdly like Egyptian Lover making UK Funky.

  1. Clash Of The Titans
  2. Clash Of The Dub (Dubkasm mix)
Review: The force is strong in Bristol as the Peng Sound operation surface in style with a second release helmed by Young Echo member Ishan Sound. Arriving roughly a year after the debut, hand stamped release from Gorgon Sound and Dubkasm, the dedication to soundsystem culture and bassweight has very much been maintained on Clash Of The Titans. Soundsystem veteran Ras Addis looms large, his portrait adorning the cover and his voice offering some commanding, authoritative words on justice and equality atop the unforgiving rhythmic work of Ishan Sound. Dubkasm maintain their Peng Sound 100% appearance record with a B Side re/version that coats proceedings in a tough digidub sheen. Lovingly mastered via 1/2inch tape, pressed onto hand-stamped, heavyweight 180g vinyl and presented in a hand numbered special edition of 500 printed sleeves designed by Tape-Echo.

Review: Hotline continue to channel the most exciting sounds to be dissipating from the Bristol locale with their latest release a double pack from the mighty Ishan Sound! Chris Ebdon is evidently sitting on a wealth of Ishan Sound dubs with this double pack for Hotline following on from a self-titled Peng Sound release of a similar nature earlier this year. Presented in striking yellow, these six cuts find Ishan Sound working with the rolling vocal style of Rider Shafique, and sees Ebdon bring his more club-orientated style to the fore. Heavy steppers vibes through and through from the Young Echo man!

Review: Having recently notched up 100 releases, Tectonic begins a new era by offering up a suitably weighty collaborative release from Peng Sound regular Ishan Sound. On side A, the Young Echo member joins forces with Hodge - owner of the nicest hair in techno - for the deep and dreamy dubstep shuffle of "C5", where fluid riffs dance above a blazed but powerful beat. Muttley lends a hand on flipside cut "Still Smoking", an altogether livelier and more aggressive - if still suitably deep and hazy - 140 BPM workout that comes complete with stabbing, grime style riffs and some serious subsonic bass.

Sitting somewhere between Modeselektor and Squarepusher but with dubbier roots, highlights include the tripped out harmonic headiness of "Heavy Machyn Gun" and "Phix", the slo-mo white knuckle ride with fellow Turk Gantz. 3. Grup Ses - "Mimar" (Iskeletor remix) (1:49)
Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Kerem Sevincli AKA Iskeletor, an Istanbul-based beat-maker and bass-loving experimentalist who last featured on Tektosag way back in 2013. His return to the imprint boasts a trio of tracks on one-side, with an attractive, etched illustration on the other. He begins with "Afromax", a two-minute flurry of chopped experimental hip-hop beats, mangled bicycle bell and nuts-and-bolts percussion and wonky, shape-shifting electronics. Gantz Seytan remixes, cannily emphasizing the wonkiness of the beats on an outer-space excursion that's near hallucinatory in its twisted, slow motion approach. To round things off, Sevincli offers up his rework of Grup Ses cut "Mimar", re-casting it as a dystopian, ever-changing experimental beatscape rich in redlined sounds and epileptic drumbeats.

Review: Hold tight! The Itinerant Dubs camp resurfaces with Spirit In The Underworld, a second unholy concoction of bassweight pressure for your consumption. Emerging from the West London ether with the three Itinerant Magic 12" last month, this unknown collective of selectors showed they can dip into all ends of bass indebted dancefloor culture yet do it in a manner that shows they have the utmost respect and knowledge of dub, techno, jungle and can brandish it with mutant aplomb. The heavyweight Spirit In The Underworld 12" fins space for one extra Itinerant exploration and rolls deep from the off with the heavy stepping "D-into-core". From here, they veer through the slack jawed grime with "Flipped Out Tango" whilst "Hypnotic Jungle" and the title cut show their skills for frenetic, loose limbed rhythmics.

Review: New label Itinerant Dub introduces itself with three L.I.E.S and Appointment inspired tracks. The first, "Itinerant Magic", takes up the entire A-side and sees distorted everything calmed and controlled by a cosmically bleepy and arpeggiated synth. The B-side is too fast at 45rpm and too slow at 33rpm - or is it? "Jack The Dub" sounds like a busker freestyle junk-drumming on a busy street, while "Monkey" - still distorted - sees Caribbean riddims and jungle sounds make for a sparse and ambient drum track.

Review: Following Mr G and Stingray's hefty refix session, the ID crew lay down four more dot-joining exercises between tempos and techniques. "Weaving Dub" is a future flexback to jungle's heady formative era, "To The Club" is a dub house gem with a winningly awkward vocal texture used as a hook. "Pushin'" takes us deeper into the sub swamp with rolling broken beats and layers of squelchy lava bass while "Russ Elements" takes us back to the 170 zone with a dynamic that places the hook about a mile ahead of the faraway drums. Woozy, weird and wonderful.

  1. Track 1

Review: Their anonymity still impressively intact, no one knows who the London/Berlin partnership behind these left side dubwise slices are, but everyone is loving them. Having showcased aspects of jungle and classic dub on the previous outings, this Record Store Day special explores both hip-hop culture and very early techno flavours... "Track 1" dusts off an old soul gem, strips it back and slows it right down. "Track 2", meanwhile, retains an element of b-boy flavour thanks to the cool scratches, but its bassy body and lo-fi groove screams classic Bleep, Coldcut or Unique 3. Both are genuinely unique.
