Review: The fourth full-length LP by Canadian punk rockers Nomeansno comes as their most popular album to date, a whirlwind of post-hardcore, heavy metal and jazzcore influences that harks back not only to nineties interpretations of post-punk, but also fresh renditions and fusions of the sound in the 21st Century. Pondering catacylsmic themes and cryptic modern aporias, this is a veritable walloping in sound from the Vancouver troupe.

Review: The Roxy in Covent Garden, London, was the centre of the punk scene in 1977 and the UK Subs were one of many whose appaearances at the tony club launched them to lengthy careers. Originally recorded on New Years in 1977, this live album was originally released in 1991, showing the band - Charlie Harper on vocals, Nicky Garratt on guitar, Steve Slack on bass and Rory Lyons on drums - in their infancy. Known for their short, energy and often alcohol-driven songs, the band built a strong following for decades after, but that UK punk attitude is already very much in evidence in all its gnarly glory here.

Fear To Go! Rarities 1988-2000
Cat: CLOLP 4958. Rel: 26 Apr 24
Review: Among the earliest wave of English punk's first wave were UK Subs, notably formed in 1976. Fronted on vocals by Charlie Harper, the band enjoyed a whopping career beginning with their debut album in 1979, in stark contrast to the flash-in-the-pan nature of many of their peers. New compilation Fear To Go! compiles the bulk of the band's rarities and B-sides, capturing the Subs' distinctive melodies, pop-out shreddings and lugubrious but somehow still lively lyrics.

Review: The seminal Austin Texas punk band Dicks' Kill From The Heart album gets a full and proper reissue. Formed in 1980, Dicks original lineup included Gary Floyd (vocals), Glen Taylor (guitar), Buxf Parrot (bass), and Pat Deason (drums). The influence of this album spread far across other key bands after Dicks breakup in 1986. Mudhoney, Butthole Surfers and The Jesus Lizard all regularly played covers of Dicks' songs. The band reunited a handful of years ago to wide spread appeal. San Francisco's Superior Viaduct records should be applauded for putting out this genuine slice of life.

Review: Hailing from Ocala, Florida, pop punk/metalcore hybridisers A Day To Remember have become one of the definitive acts of the scene due to their fluid amalgamation of catchy earworm hooks, brutal chugging breakdowns, motivational gang vocals and deft understanding of melody. Originally released in 2009, their third full-length Homesick is often considered their crowning achievement, and has long been out of print and priced at ludicrous mark ups on Discogs for too many a moon. Following recent reissues of For Those Who Have Heart and Common Courtesy, the band celebrate the landmark album's 15 year anniversary with a gatefold deluxe edition, complete with a bonus LP made up of songs taken from a live Switzerland performance in tour of the record, along with acoustic renditions of two album cuts; the title track and 'Another Song About The Weekend'.

Review: You may have heard that former Dead Kennedys frontman and now multi-project artist Jello Biafra leads his very own School Of Medicine, inspired by the pioneering medicinal discoveries of his antecedents Iggy Pop and hip-hop greats such as Hieroglyphics and Digital Underground. The Audacity Of Hype, the School's first patent, was the logical chemical synthesis that made up these ingredients; fiery, crunchy, high-velocity, hardcore punk and post-punk, with a dashing of metal drumming and political emphasis on "Homeland insecurity". Now reissued via Alternative Tentacles a full fifteen years later - cracking stuff!

Review: The upcoming eighth and final studio album by Canadian punk and metal rockers Sum 41, Heaven :x: Hell centres on the ultimate duality of their sound. Divided into two parts, the first disc, Heaven, hears a return to the pop punk cant of the band's earlier career, while the Hell-ish second disc reflects their latter-day exploration of heavy metal. Though the name references a dualistic theme, the ultimate goal is the synthesis of the two sounds, showing just how far the band have come in their nearly 30-year career. Lead single 'Landmines', which on the surface of things tends more towards the aforementioned pop punk heaven, captures this tendency, incorporating rapidfire metal fills and deathly vocal snarls.

Review: Serving as a self-analysed response to 1998's ska and reggae-oriented Life Won't Wait, as well as growing criticisms that the band were slowly morphing into some form of Diet The Clash, punk legends Rancid would come to cave skulls at the turn of the new millennium with their second self-titled LP (after their 1993 debut), with many fans referring to the project as Rancid (2000) or simply Rancid 5. Reuniting with Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion to handle production duties (a collaborative role he has maintained with the group ever since), the project easily serves as the most aggressive offering in their entire catalogue, drawing on elements of hardcore and Oi! and imbuing them into their established ska-punk formula, moving far away from any Clash comparisons, and sharing more of a sonic kinship with the type of aggy, scuzzy, brassless hardcore ska of Choking Victim. At 22 tracks spread out over a near-40 minute runtime, you do the chaotic math.

Answer 81' Easter Gig 19th April 1981 Live Recorded At Kyoto Takutaku Vol 2
Review: Taken from a live performance at an event titled Answer 81 at the Kyoto venue Taku Taku in 1981, this bootleg from Japanese hardcore punk heroes The Stalin was recorded half a year before the release of their seminal debut Trash LP. Featuring a frenetic, unhinged performance from one of the earliest line-ups of the group, while boasting alternative versions of tracks from tangentially linked projects (with differing titles pulled from the original masters tapes). For example, 'Kiga Kiga Kikyou', a popular solo track from frontman and primary Stalinist Michiro Endo, appears here as 'Want You', marking the first time The Stalin's version has ever been released or committed to record. 'Buta No Ketsu' also serves as a reworking of a cut from the band's earlier incarnation Jiheitai, with this also making its first official appearance on wax.

Review: Born To Expire is the debut album by New York City band Leeway. Renowned as leaders of the crossover thrash charge in the mid 1980s, the local fountainhead, their early-days genius, was none other than that exalted club of legend, CBGB. Though the bands they ran with saw them as odd ones out for their originality - it was indeed their sweats that led to the coinage 'crossover thrash' at all - it was this very incongruence that saw to their popularity. In hindsight, lead guitarist and songwriter A.J. Novello described his delight at the album's success, boastful of its totally metallic sound and the one that "rewrote the book on New York hardcore".

Review: Following on from the global success of 1997's Nimrod, pop-punk heroes Green Day would find themselves at a creative impasse, with an earnest desire to eschew much of their pre-established formula and tap into outsider influences. These compositional experiments led to 2000's Warning; an LP considered somewhat of a commercial flop upon release, further strained by a tepid fan response and the full project leaking to Napster three weeks before official date. Time finally catching up to all things as it does, the decades of dust gathering since has led to the album being reappraised throughout the years as one of the finest examples of Billie Joe Armstrong's penmanship; drawing on inspiration from peers in the alternative rock scene such as Nirvana and R.E.M. while citing Bob Dylan's 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home as a vital guide to retooling the Green Day formula to fit a more slacker rock/acoustic folk-punk style. Four years later would see the dawn of American Idiot and Green Day being passed, as it were, from Generation X to the millennials, for an entirely new era and fanbase, marking Warning as the band's last 90's-imbued work and final chapter for many a longtime listener.

Review: Two towering labels, Alternative Tentacles and Crispin Glover, break the mould for a momentary merger on this artistic collision of rogue planets: a new split reissued 7" housing that infamous syncretic, Patrick Fitzgerald, Motorpsycho and Jello Biafra, and their twin versions of Fitzgerald's original song 'Punch'. Fitzgerald is best known as a pioneer of folk punk, famously channelling his sardonic wit into a fleeting, light but somehow also epical sound. 'Punch' first surfaced in 2009 as a one-off single released under Crispin Glover's remit; it's now heard once more in both versions, tracking incendiary denunciations of politics on Fitzgerald's part, amid a suicidal, guitar-driven ascension into the air.

Review: Originally formed in Birmingham in 1976, Suburban Studs were a classic case of right place, right time yet with no major mainstream success to buoy them for long. Opening for the likes of The Clash, Sex Pistols, Judas Priest, and even AC/DC during their tenure, while also recording a Peel Session, the Studs' live graft is what they're fondly most remembered for, yet their one and only full-length Slam is still packed to the brim with retrograde bangers. Releasing your punk debut in 1977, the year punk (apparently) died, may not have been the best move, but disregarding all pontifications of mysticism and fate, punks with working ears are still very glad the record exists, while those with turntables will be overjoyed to finally add this slept on gem to their collection.

Review: Japanese industrial noise duo The Grogerigegege are something of an urban legend within the underground music scene. Apparently meeting at a sex club where a shared appreciation for envelope pushing sex acts, punishing aural sonics and a bizarre avant-garde perspective on art would lock them together for ensuing decades of musical mayhem. Known for incorporating nudity, violence, broken glass and hoovers into their live set, the pair would even take a lengthy respite while one of the members simply disappeared for years on end before reconnecting with his counterpart. As If It Had Always Been Determined Since This Day Was Born transports listeners back to the pair's earliest forays into calculated extremity with blown out, overdriven remixes taken directly from the master tapes of their first 7" single released back in 1988. This includes the long sought after remaster of 'Mistress' originally used in the legendary Enoshima Beach Flexi Burning Live (which the pair opted to burn all original pressings of rather than make readily available). You do have to remember these are the same lads who sold dried out octopus tentacles in cassette cases during one tour as a limited release, and smashed up the master recording of another work and put the broken pieces in a metallic box that the listener shook to hear the album, hence the title You Are The Music Maker. If the utter lunacy of The Grogerigegege isn't detailed enough here, well this pressing comes complete with 5500 word essay-style liner notes penned by 55 year old Gero himself (Juntaro Yamanouchi).

Review: The Minneapolis Uranium Club Band's Infants Under The Bulb album is an engaging journey through unbridled punk creativity and raw guitar energy. Released amidst their hometown's vibrant underground scene, the album defies categorisation in the way it blends elements of punk, post-punk and experimental rock. With relentless rhythms, angular guitar riffs and cryptic lyrics, each track unfolds in heavy and arresting fashion and the band's unconventional approach and uncompromising attitude challenge listeners to embrace the unconventional throughout this most visceral of albums.

Review: Grime-inflected hardcore punk duo Bob Vylan follow up 2022's phenomenal The Price Of Life with yet another batch of scathing, witty, sardonic and severely pissed off bangers that distil elements from hip-hop, post-punk and metal into one cacophonous rallying cry for the working class. Touching on themes of racism, xenophobia, mental health and fatherhood, the hefty subject matter is balanced with energetic, banging compositions and a tongue-firmly-in-cheek delivery that falls somewhere between the smirking shitheaded-ry of IDLES and the intellectual fury of Rage Against The Machine.

Review: Canadian noise-rock trio Metz deliver their fifth full-length LP for their home label Sub Pop. Expressing an exponential graph of maturity, that has grown over their decade or so of recording and releasing, Metz' sound on Up On Gravity Hill veers more towards an almost black-metallic atmosphere, to counterpoise their originally stark, rageful sound. Conceptually, the album's change in sound matches its thematic content, with the band having found more peace in contrast, and the life-promising realisation that one can only experience its most joyful moments on the sole condition that one has also suffered its worst vagaries - there is no paradise without the fall. On the likes of '99' and 'Entwined', we're met with a driving, repetitious howl set against a sludgy axe-y backdrop, as vocalist Alex Edkins performatively laments and celebrates the ways of the world at the same time.

Review: With the arrival of 1987's Death Before Dishonour, Edinburgh punk legends The Exploited began to distance themselves from their pre-established oi/street punk demeanour, and move towards a far heavier, speed metal-inflected crossover thrash style of hardcore punk; a direction they would continue to pursue throughout the 90s. Following a six-year gap after 1990's The Massacre, 1996 would see the group return with easily the best LP from their latter-day output, Beat The Bastards. Packed to the brim with seething, feral bangers such as 'Law Tor The Rich', 'System Fucked Up', and 'Massacre Of Innocents', this new splattered vinyl double LP pressing comes courtesy of the wonderful folks over at Nuclear Blast who've worked to beautifully restore and reissue the band's heaviest final three albums ever since signing them back in 2021.

Review: A bumper crop of oddities and deep cuts from UK Subs' bountiful back catalogue. From opener- a bizarre cover of Khachaturian's 'Sabre Dance' to 'NRA Jingle' a charmingly cringe jingle for Bay Area's New Red Archives label, the subs show their diversity, with the almost Cramps-esque warble of tracks like 'Motivator' giving way to the borderline emo thrash of 'Postcard from LA' and the outright weirdness of jangly sketches like 'Nico'. Definitely a must for any UK Subs enthusiast looking to triangulate the band's more well-known works!

Review: Since signing The Exploited in 2021, iconic metal/punk label Nuclear Blast have gone to lengths to reissue the three latest albums from the legendary Edinburgh oi-punks, who by the arrival of 1987's Death Before Dishonour, had moved towards an even more aggressive form of crossover thrash hardcore. This direction would continue to be pursued throughout their 90s output, with The Massacre in 1990, Beat The Bastards in 1996 and most recently (although 21 years and counting currently) 2003's vicious statement of latter-day intent Fuck The System. Coming seven years after its predecessor as well as marking the band's seventh overall full-length, it's the only album to date to feature guitarist Robbie Davidson and bassist Mikie Jacobs, while the project and its subsequent tour cycle would be marred in controversy due to the band being refused entry into Montreal, Canada in October 2003. This led to the cancellation of the show and a full scale riot of 500 fans smashing windows and destroying cars, ultimately leading to their Mexico City date also being cancelled for safety reasons. Is it really shocking to imagine that's how The Exploited's fans would react when they felt that burned? Juno don't condone, we're just not that surprised.

Review: Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania based melodic hardcore outfit One Step Closer have been left holding the keys to a burdensome legacy. Hailing from the same small town in middle America as emo-hardcore legends Title Fight, there's a lingering sense all eyes in the scene have been slyly pointed at the group since the release of their exceptional debut album This Place You Know in 2021, which they would follow up with last year's surprise Songs For The Willow EP. Where that small batch of tracks indicated a similar creative path to the aforementioned Title Fight with its newfound embracing of melodious shoegazing and melancholic composition, their highly anticipated sophomore LP All You Embrace appears set to marry both the raw and subdued, vicious and vulnerable qualities of their poignant angst-riddled emo-tinged grungecore into one unified cohesion of sincere, gritty, genuine alternative rock.

Review: Socio-political hardcore punk meets the authenticity of grime by way of the dynamic duo that is Bob Vylan. Following on from 2022's much lauded sophomore effort The Price Of Life, the two Bobs (not their real names nor do they cite their namesake as a primary influence) return with their most direct, succinct and instantaneous collection of bangers to date. Drawing on motifs of hip-hop, nu-metal, post-punk and rap-rock, yet all restrained beneath a banner of venomous hardcore bite and London-centric wit, the material touches on the pressures of fatherhood in an especially unjust system, while tossing around uncomfortable topics of poverty, gentrification, racism, classism, and knife-crime like they're volleyed footballs rather than hot-button issues, challenging listeners to ruminate for a little longer than it usually takes to peruse through another desensitised news article.

Review: Following on from their 1980 debut full-length No Questions Asked, the very next year would see Los Angeles based punk legends The Flesh Eaters unveil what many a fan considers to be, not only their magnum opus but one of the finest punk experiments ever contributed to the scene. A Minute To Pray, A Second To Die purposefully eschewed the breakneck pace of the expanding hardcore scene to channel outsider influences from the likes of swampy, Bayou-inflected roots rock to spasmodic jazz dirges to blues-laden malevolence. With depraved B-movie horror tales of violence and religious scandal; ultimately weaving a lyrical tapestry of the underbelly of LA, punk poet prophet Chris Desjardins immortalised himself as a commanding vocal presence with the type of penmanship to hypnotise, disgust and enthral.

Following on from the commercial success of 2003's Before Everything & After, which would mark the band's highest charting album to date, 2005 would see the release of their often overlooked gem Panic. At seven LPs in that this point, the energetic delivery and emotive material would cement the group as reliable lifers, while standout single 'Wrecking Hotel Rooms' featuring Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 on guest vocals, has gone on to become a highly lauded pop-punk crossover event in the decades since.

Review: Daisy Chainsaw commanded a unique spell over the English punk and garage rock scenes of the early 90s. Never quite totally placeable, their earliest gigs involved frolicking around onstage in soiled gowns and strewing rag dolls and grapevines across stages. Forming part of their debut EP at the turn of the '90s, 'Love Your Money' became the bands breakout sensation hit, the song being a satirical rip-roarer of snarling punk and rockabilly, with a highly-strung backbeat and lyrics decrying the record industry's avaricious ways; PSA to artists, they just love your money, or the money they think they can make off you!

Review: The latest reissued compilation of 4 Skins' greatest works contains the hits and misses of the band at the height of the oi! era, which evolved in tandem with their breakout success and helped them along more than a fair little. From the opening jump of 'One Law For Them' and 'Evil', twin charges of unrelenting chant-punk and brawly sonic brashness, to the latter-siders 'A.C.A.B.' and 'I Don't Wanna Die', as well as a second Bumper Session of 'Evil', this retrospective harks back to a distinct early 80s subculture - as well as a band who, in their concern for police brutality and social injustice, defy common misconceptions of skinheads as all bad.

Review: It would take the current state of the world to awaken seasoned Boston based hardcore punk veterans The Hope Conspiracy from their slumber. The aptly titled Confusion/Chaos/Misery serves as the first piece of new material from the group since their 2009 True Nihilist EP, and offers a feral barrage of unhinged, D-beat inspired scathing hardcore fury. Whilst the members have kept busy in a myriad of equally impressive projects such as All Pigs Must Die, Hesitation Wounds, and Paint It Black (to name but a small handful), time felt fitting for them to regroup with Converge's Kurt Ballou at the iconic God City Studios to lay down this sonic curbstomp of a return, complete with a vicious cover of 'Dogfight' by Swedish crust-punk legends Anti Cimex as closer. And according to the band's website/press release - "this is just the beginning..."

Review: Originally self-released at the dawn of the new millennium before being reissued the following year by Kung Fu Records, Rock & Roll Part Three served as the debut album from emo-tinged geek rock power pop extraordinaires Ozma. Taking a nostalgia-baiting fuzzed out approach to instantaneously catchy, saccharine-hooked pop-punk embellished by the use of Casio keyboards, the LP would draw favourable comparisons to the likes of The Rentals, The Get Up Kids, and Weezer, with the latter even being compelled to take the (at the time) little known group on the road as their primary support for two nationwide tours across 2001/2002. Furthermore, Weezer primary songwriter Rivers Cuomo even selected the album as one of his choices when answering a Reddit AMA on what two records should every Weezer fan listen to (the other being The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds), so high praise indeed from the Lord of all things geek-rock.

Review: Contemporary D.C. punk gets another run for its money with this seven-year anniversary of No Man's 'Glitter And Spit' EP. Emerging from the city's punk scene with the collective voracity of a starved vat of piranhas, the four-piece band came together amid the fallout of prior project Majority Rule, albeit with a similar set of musical-political aims. The EP evidences No Man's sound as huge and clunking, thanks to the nearly slowcore-esque drums and guitars of Pat Broderick and Kevin Lamiell (in its slower moments, at least), yet coming fronted by a toothy, harpish snarl by vocalist Matt Michel, backed up by guest vocalist Maha Shami on one track. The faster moments are monumentally cathartic and powerful; this is by far one of the most intense punk records we've heard all year so far, carrying enough home-headbang potential to evince many a rageful family moshpit from the sound alone, let alone the commentary over the Israeli-Palestine conflict it also bears.
