Review: Emotional Response is delighted to present a special project, a collection of music from Bartosz Kruczynski, recorded for "Selected Media" and presented here as a time-piece of his continuing works.

Initially known as one half of sample based project Ptaki (The Very Polish Cut Outs / Transatlantyk), Kruczynski first appeared for Emotional Response as The Phantom for the first series of SchleiBen in 2015. Featuring two works of deep 'fourth world' sounds, they highlighted a shift to more mellow, synthetic and hazy compositions.

His break out came, however, when he explored this sound further on his eponymous album Baltic Beat, for the acclaimed Growing Bin Records. This has been augmented with the recent club based music as one half of the wonderful Earth Trax (Rhythm Section International / Phonica Records) project.

Here though, Kruczynski returns to the ambient and ethereal - plus a touch of dub techno - to showcase his expansive collaborative work with Polish studio, TVP Culture. Given free artistic license, the 15 'short form' recordings included here were for programming, in the main, on modern Polish Art including the likes of Magdalena Abakanowicz, Miroslaw Balka and Tadeusz Kantor, as well as some international aspects for Enrico Prampolini, Ai Weiwei and Monica Bonvicini.

Taken from over 70 episodes the material included recollects imagery, video and memory to present a series of short vignettes that together create one whole. Minimal and hazy ambience (V, VII, VIII, XI, XII) envisages classic melodies and chords and is accompanied by further 'fourth world' pieces (I, II, III, VII, X) that present an oeuvre that is recognisably the music of Kruczynski, while remaining fresh and perfectly meditative.

A counter can be found in the atmospheric dub works (IV, IX, XIV) that hint at echo chamber environs to get infinitely lost in. As an album then, "Selected Media" can be heard as a snapshot to Kruczynski's music journey, a meeting of art and music that is oft overlooked but very much essential.

Review: Once dubbed by Young Marco as "the King of Chords", Italian ambient pioneer Gigi Masin has yet to make a duff album, or one that's not deliciously warm and loved up for that matter. Predictably he maintains this near perfect record with "Calypso", his first set for R&S Records' downtempo offshoot Apollo. Interestingly, it's perhaps a little more eclectic than you might expect, with cuts clearly influenced by Steve Reich and Jon Hassell (see opener "Calypso" and "How To Disappear In A Kiss") and dusty trip-hop beat-scapes ("Belamore", the jazz-flecked beauty of "Anemone") nestling side by side with fireside-warm ambient luxury ("If", "Your Name Is My Infinite") and pin-sharp synthesizer journeys ("Kalifa Golf Club"). It all adds up to one of Masin's most magical albums yet - and that's saying something.

Review: Coyote / Buzzard Country A bird shrieks. This is Buzzard Country after all. Two wise old balearic owls rub the sandman from their peelers, and cast their gaze upon a new day. Stretching to greet the Sun, giving thanks, and remembering all those lucky years that went before. All the long journeys into night, days of altered states, and morning-afters staring out to sea. Veterans at this game, fixed on the horizon. Cosmic synths purr over a sleepy Rave baseline. Sparse, spare piano, and woodwinds pick out a path, to help you wind your way home. Around the houses, down forgotten roads. A Spanish guitar plays in the harbour, and the memory of yesterdays parties' 4 / 4 boom sparks a slow, easy Acid flashback. Echoes of 90s IDM, Intelligent Dance Music, clever beats for stoners, mixing with the faded, but not jaded, vision of an introspective White Isle sunrise. There's the spectre of a spine-tingling rush. The keys kick it off. Percussion rattling, a breakbeat shuffling, as you recall the dancers. Flamenco's shout, stamp and clap, the songs of passion, songs for heroes, while lives less ordinary screen inside your head. Movies of your own making muddling up the photo-album snapshots, and the make-believe. Tabla touches, marimba tones, and Eastern drone adorn an oasis of Dub. Conjuring a psychedelic North Africa. A mirage where Tuareg nomads cross the Sahara, accompanied by tasikisikit and prayer. Then the backing track's spinning in reverse, to score a coastal drive. Wayfarers on, as clouds caught in time-lapse charge against the blue

  3. Barely Alive (Job Sifre remix)
  4. Barely Alive (Das Ding remix)
Review: The label is delighted to welcome Kris Baha with his first 12" for Especial. After killer remixes of Sfire and Red Axes for the label, his name as an artist, with his darker take on dance music, has risen and risen.

With releases on Bahnsteig 23, CockTail d'Amore and Pinkman, Baha has become a respected artist in just a few years. Building analogue equipped studios in Melbourne and Berlin, DJing, producing and mixing have all led to atonal ear, where success came through dedication.

Following his debut album Palais, Barely Alive acts as release from these years of sweat. A call to all in this modern world, the song exemplifies a move from club music to a freedom in sound and song, as vox crash against 808 and Arp 2600. Remixes start with Timothy J Fairplay a name synonymous with Especial. Here TJF laces his trademark echoplexxed wash for a cold wave mover. Next prodigy Job Sifre builds on his acclaimed debuts with a remodel that goes straight to 'that' basement, mixing his love of electro, new wave and industrial. To close, the legend of Das Ding creates a re-alternate remix, fusing his unique fuzz with Baha's ode for a brittle finale.

Review: Following the release of Roy's sold-out cassette album of the same name in 2018, Acid Waxa are thrilled to present 4 cuts from Acid Royale on vinyl for the very thirst time! EP opener MDM ANAL cuts no corner kicks, immediately reeling in both the young & old raver of yon with a raw and irresistible chonk of hedonistic HI-NRG saucy Euro-dance bang, followed by firm EP and album fave DON'T GET CAUGHT with its beautiful gushing synth-lines and biting 303. Fast forward to the second half of the match and title track ACID ROYALE is a thumping, tickler of a ride with its rolling cymbals and dizzying, fizzed-up synth lines. EP closer GO SKIIING sees Roy in gentler fettle, easing our collective come-down with fluttering, snowflake-like synths and thick, buried bass drums, peng (bobble) hats and dense snares, shovelled up from off of the slope where Roy skilfully and majestically soars. BRAVO, MISTER RACE!!

  4. Blood Moon (Violet remix)
Review: Especial welcomes Kim Ann Foxman to debut on the label with an ode to the power of the moon. The sample heavy, acid vocal cuts no slack and shows Foxman confidently developing as a producer and is backed with a stellar set of remixes from Roza Terenzi, Dawl & Sween and Violet.

Revered by many as an on point clubber, dancer, singer, DJ and producer, her breakthrough in Hercules & Love Affair was a start, soon carving out her place as a solo artist and global DJ, while fitting in time to run the Firehouse - recently featuring Richard Sen and Kasra V - and SELF-TIMER labels - home to new project, Pleasure Planet.

As veteran of the San Francisco 90s heyday, slipping breaks around a 4/4 kick is a blast of past meets acid future, as 303 meets M1, while Foxman's lyrics - written during the Blood Moon over London - extols the power of the tides, nature's internal and external flow.

The remixes are a manner of breaks-heaven, as Roza Terenzi rips a steppas dub, Tone Dropout's Dawl and Sween master a latter day M25 anthem, before finally Violet, edits, strips, builds and takes things deep.

Make me lust, make me bleed.

Review: Vox Populi!'s cult and highly sought after debut LP is finally reissued here after 30 years. Recorded after their first single - Ectoplasmies (1983) - between 1984 and 1985, the original band of Mitra and her (then) 14 year old brother Arash and Axel Kyrou, evolved from 2 early cassettes and the 7"s' rudimentary, idiosyncratic and improvisational structures to more cohesive edges.

Living together, but with no formal music education, the nature of the disparate elements led to a sparseness of the recordings. Influenced by his mother, the concrete music pioneer, Mireille Kyrou and her work at GRM (State Institute for Musical Research), Axel challenged his creativity by utilising their Vox Man studio as an instrument.

Building on minimal synth, rhythm box, hand percussion and Persian poetry, they experimented with tape manipulation - layering the music with forward, backward and echo simultaneously - creating a leap in the band's development.

The dark nature Myscitismes was reflected in their increasing interest in industrial and ethnic music, with a great fascination for the religious traditional music of Tibet. Ceremonial, gothic, drone-folk, the progression is apparent; onward perceptions.

  1. Cooper Saver - "Tell"

  3. Marc Pinol - "Vol De Nit"
  4. Velmondo - "Transubstantiation"
Review: While the title of Hivern Discs' excellent "Fragments" series may suggest a kind of odds-and-ends approach to A&R, each of the four volumes to date has been anything but sketchy and throwaway. This fifth instalment is every bit as alluring as its predecessors. Check first Cooper Saver's clandestine chugger "Tell" - all druggy modular vibrations, echoing Horror organs and foreboding chords - before turning your attention to the tuneful Boards Of Canada style lead lines and sparse, lo-fi house beats of Pional's "Purple". Arguably even better is the stripped-back, acid-driven headiness of Marc Pinol's "Vol De Nit", while Velmondo's "Transubstantiation" is a fine slo-mo freak out full of devilishly pitched-down drums, weirdo electronics and synthesized marimba melodies.

Review: AE presents two 12"s of rhythmic hypnosis from the eXquisite CORpsE related project, XqST (Robbert Heijnen and Debbie Jones). AE logic symbols that stand for "For All" and "There Exists" is a deep and meditative journey moving further into the more abstract territories that Robbert and Debbie previously explored with eXquisite CORpsE.

Most of the material on the record is selected from improvisations Robbert and Debbie recorded in their home studio in Vancouver, BC during 2003, except for "SDLY" which was recorded in the Netherlands in 1996.

The material came about naturally, mixing previously collected loops and sounds with improvisations and manipulations on further electronic equipment. During the time of these recordings, Robbert and Debbie would put their kids to bed and retreat to their home studio, where making noise together was a way to relax.

These eight tracks are a coherent document of the free-flowing experimentation and musical symbiosis shared between Robbert and Debbie. Created for each other, now to be shared.

The Living Daylights (Timothy J Fairplay mix)
  1. The Living Daylights (original Uncut mix)
  2. The Living Daylights (live In Studio)
  3. The Living Daylights (Timothy J Fairplay Redub)
  4. The Living Daylights (TJF bonus)
Review: The third in the releases where label favourites are represented for today and backed with a remix / version by a contemporary producer of repute, presents 80s leftfield pop-rock band In Embrace. Appearing here are two versions of The Living Daylights, the original long version and a re-recorded live take, plus additional versions by Timothy J Fairplay.

Coming out of the midlands Post Punk / fanzine scene Gary Knight and friends formed the original incarnation of In Embrace in 1981. Picked up by Glass Records, the early, edgy live recording were re-proposed as Knight developed his 'non-musicianship' with an interest in the possibilities of the studio.

The original "Uncut" version takes it's anti-war themed vocal and lays it over a Jah Wobble inspired bassline and tense electronic rhythm. As it builds, the pressure mounts a visceral sense of oblivion of 9+ minutes of deep dubbing and repeating refrain.

Next to this the "Live In Studio" version sees the later 3 piece band replay it out in an energetic raw form that makes a worth addition. Handing the versions, plus backing tracks to Timothy J Fairplay offered a radical departure. His brooding Redub and Bonus mixes take the track to a darker place, drawing out the induced, relentless madness Knight always intended.

Review: Calypso is back with a new instalment of their world exploration in the search for new sounds. This time and with the help of Nicola Cruz they choose to showcase the city of Quito. In Nicola's own words: "From the highlands of the Equator, an eclectic sound develops in multiples forms: tension, gravity, drums...un-dusted elements from old records, retranslated to tape in order to revive the emotion. All the tracks in this compilation have been assembled through different experimental methods, as this is something that characterizes our creation around here. The work of FE, Quixosis, NTFL (from the city of Ibarra) and my self represent in this record some of the underground fields that this city offers". Indeed an experimental way to experience this city through the sounds of this 4 amazing producers.

Review: Astonishingly, "Chaos Game" is the eighth collaborative EP from Ohm (Bjarnar Jonsson) and Octal Industries (Jonas Thor Gudmundsson) since 2016. Like its predecessors, it offers a tough, club ready take on dub techno that peppers a variety of chunky, peak-time grooves with undeniably spacey elements. The best of the bunch - in our opinion at least - is opener "Breather", where dubbed-out synthesizer riffs and echoing chords bubble along over sparse beats before the Scandinavian pair bring in a heavy beat midway through. Elsewhere, "Strange Attractors" is hypnotic, odd and otherworldly, while closing cut "Creation" is the most dub-fired of the lot, largely because its hazy vocal samples and riffs pay tribute to soundsystem culture in the best possible way.

Review: Mannequin and Platform 23 Records reissue what is considered to many the most complete album by perennial anarcho-outsiders Bourbonese Qualk.

The last recorded album at their South London squat, The Ambulance Station on the Old Kent Road, and again released on their own Recloose Organisation, saw the band develop further beyond the limits of the post-punk / industrial scene where genres increasingly became redundant.

Ethno, jazz, funk and EBM are all buried deep in the album as it seeks independence. The title, a critique of the Labour movements ineffective and limited call to arms against the prevailing Thatcherism of the mid-80s, encapsulates this wider oeuvre.

From opening Return To Order, the acoustic gloom is offset by tight musicianship and countering melody. The switch of Outcry precedes psychedelic anthem, Boggy Creek, with its VU remembrance. Blighted pulses Confrontation, Xenophobia, Backlash and closer, Insurrection, sense the darkness, but the ground has shifted forwards with the legendary 1.51 minutes of man'n' machine that is Lies, the enwrapping symphonic dub vocal of Born Left Hearted and incongruously pretty, Is It As It Was?

At times, suffocating, uncomfortable, at others light appears as history progresses. Preparing For Power is BQ at their most uncompromising and essential.

Review: London based French producer Mondowski follows a spate of recent releases on Relish and Ombra with a new club-orientated vision for London label and clubnight SC&P. Following his remix services on label's debut and 4th releases, Mondowski makes his full lavel debut with an electro inspired turn. Dancefloor orientated lead track Sholay finds a mesmerizing path somewhere between extroverted 80's electro and celebratory spiritual transcendence and gets the remix treatment from Pinkman's Kris Baha who subverts the original by turning the electro backbone up to 11. The EP's B-side, Negative Space, voyages into darker electro territories with Kraftwerkesque synths, rolling pads and a motorik bassline, all of which provides the launchpad for Multiple Man to turn out a pitch black EBM banger.

Review: After a period of quiet, Area is back with friends on Kimochi Sound. All the tracks here are reworks of Area productions, but the collaborators take the originals in new and exciting directions. Gauss' Natan H offers up a stomping version of Dare To Be Different, whereas Freerotation's Leif contrasts with a fleetfooted rendition of The Face Yours Reminds Me Of. Longtime label contributor Benjamin Brunn gets the whole B-side to traverse tempos and textures and round out the emotive release.
