Review: Up until his death in 2003, Hiroshi Yoshimura spent decades offering up immaculate albums that blurred the boundaries between ambient, new age and minimalism. For those not versed in the Japanese ambient pioneer's vast catalogue, 1986's "Green" - which is here reissued by Light In The Attic - remains one of his most impressive works. Created using a minimal number of instruments (mostly synthesizers and electric pianos), the set is as quietly jazzy as it is relaxing. Highlights include the meditative, Terry Riley influenced bliss of "Feel", the pulsing organ stabs and blissful electronics of "Sheep", the garden-ready musical hug that is "Green" and the swelling opener "Creek".

Review: Coyote / Buzzard Country A bird shrieks. This is Buzzard Country after all. Two wise old balearic owls rub the sandman from their peelers, and cast their gaze upon a new day. Stretching to greet the Sun, giving thanks, and remembering all those lucky years that went before. All the long journeys into night, days of altered states, and morning-afters staring out to sea. Veterans at this game, fixed on the horizon. Cosmic synths purr over a sleepy Rave baseline. Sparse, spare piano, and woodwinds pick out a path, to help you wind your way home. Around the houses, down forgotten roads. A Spanish guitar plays in the harbour, and the memory of yesterdays parties' 4 / 4 boom sparks a slow, easy Acid flashback. Echoes of 90s IDM, Intelligent Dance Music, clever beats for stoners, mixing with the faded, but not jaded, vision of an introspective White Isle sunrise. There's the spectre of a spine-tingling rush. The keys kick it off. Percussion rattling, a breakbeat shuffling, as you recall the dancers. Flamenco's shout, stamp and clap, the songs of passion, songs for heroes, while lives less ordinary screen inside your head. Movies of your own making muddling up the photo-album snapshots, and the make-believe. Tabla touches, marimba tones, and Eastern drone adorn an oasis of Dub. Conjuring a psychedelic North Africa. A mirage where Tuareg nomads cross the Sahara, accompanied by tasikisikit and prayer. Then the backing track's spinning in reverse, to score a coastal drive. Wayfarers on, as clouds caught in time-lapse charge against the blue

Red Axes
Red Axes (LP + postcard)
Cat: DE 275.
Review: 2020 marks the tenth of collaboration for Red Axes, the Tel Aviv-based duo of Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi. Informed by post-punk, new wave, and a plethora of club sounds old and new, they have cleaved a singular path with their hefty discography. To celebrate their anniversary, they reunite with Dark Entries for an eponymous 11 track LP brimming with jagged guitars, spacy arpeggios, and hypnotic vocals. Although Sadovnik and Arzi have previously released LPs on I'm A Cliche and Garzen Records, Red Axes is their first effort written and conceived of as an album-length listening experience. This work flows effortlessly through a variety of stylistic detours, highlighting their ears as both keen listeners and skilled DJs. Opener 'They Game' is a grooving number that unifies the psychedelia of cosmic disco with the early 90s 'baggy' sound. The energy mounts further with "Shelera", a guitar-driven acidic banger, and "Sticks and Stones", a certifiable club hit fueled by sassy vocals courtesy of Adi Bronicki. Launching Side B is "Break the Limit", an EBM-laced number that wouldn't sound out of place on a Razormaid compilation. The following tracks wax moodier, with "Brotherhood (Of the Misunderstanding)" touching on darkwave territory. "Udibaby" and "Arpman" close out the album with their respectively dense and sparse takes on kosmische lysergia. Red Axes was mixed by Steve Dub and mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The album's artwork starkly depicts the project's name in blood-red smear. Also included is a postcard with full credits and album art. It's rare one finds an album that so casually challenges classification while still being firmly rooted on the dancefloor.

Review: Gaston Arevalo debuts on A Strangely Isolated Place with an exploratory themed album told through the lens of an expedition diary - a rich soundtrack set amongst nature. Gaston aimed to depict an adventurous journey, where each track captured a specific moment over an imaginary, daring ascension. An intimate meeting with nature, the album rises from the ground to our highest peaks - with the two extremes captured in the album's artwork. Field recordings from Patagonia enhance the feeling of freedom, one can only find from the great outdoors. Adorned with drifting harmonies; shimmering guitars; dense pads of cloud; gentle rising mists; the sound of shallow rivers and morning bird-calls, it all comes together to create a vivid and intrepid scene told across a variety of full-length tracks and short interludes - breathers and moments to reflect amongst mother-natures finest grandeur.

Review: It would be fair to say that Yumiko Morioka isn't that well known. It's not all that surprising given that the Japanese musician/composer only ever released one album, 1997's "Resonance". In recent years it's becoming something of a sought-after artefact of Japan's 1980s new age scene, hence this first European pressing courtesy of Berlin-based outlet Metron Records. The joy of "Resonance" lies in its relatively simplicity and unfussy beauty. Some of the tracks are little more than reverb-laden, neo-classical piano pieces, while others utilise a string quartet, atmospheric field recordings or slivers of warming synthesizer chords. It's minimalist in tone, but picturesque on a grandiose, widescreen scale: just the sort of album that will raise your spirits when the outside world is a scary and unforgiving place.

  4. Blood Moon (Violet remix)
Review: Especial welcomes Kim Ann Foxman to debut on the label with an ode to the power of the moon. The sample heavy, acid vocal cuts no slack and shows Foxman confidently developing as a producer and is backed with a stellar set of remixes from Roza Terenzi, Dawl & Sween and Violet.

Revered by many as an on point clubber, dancer, singer, DJ and producer, her breakthrough in Hercules & Love Affair was a start, soon carving out her place as a solo artist and global DJ, while fitting in time to run the Firehouse - recently featuring Richard Sen and Kasra V - and SELF-TIMER labels - home to new project, Pleasure Planet.

As veteran of the San Francisco 90s heyday, slipping breaks around a 4/4 kick is a blast of past meets acid future, as 303 meets M1, while Foxman's lyrics - written during the Blood Moon over London - extols the power of the tides, nature's internal and external flow.

The remixes are a manner of breaks-heaven, as Roza Terenzi rips a steppas dub, Tone Dropout's Dawl and Sween master a latter day M25 anthem, before finally Violet, edits, strips, builds and takes things deep.

Make me lust, make me bleed.

Their second LP "Into Dark Water", originally released in 1987, is just as powerful as the first - a hypnagogic journey fuelled by a global stew of sound, feeding into elegant, evocative pieces. Fans of classic Jon Hassell will find much to enjoy here, but equally those appreciating the exotic post punk undercurrents of 23 Skidoo et al will easily find themselves drawn to the likes of "Ba-makala". Stunning, borderless musings from a hidden treasure of the UK's post-industrial heritage.

Review: Together, Roman Flugel and Jorn Wuttke have delivered tons of high-grade dancefloor tackle, most notably as Acid Jesus and Alter Ego. Perhaps less well known is their early-to-mid '90s IDM and ambient work as The Primitive Painter. They released a sole album under the alias in 1994, which is now being reissued by R&S offshoot Apollo. It's well worth a listen, with the experienced (though then fresh-faced) German pair slowly shuffling between ear-catching electronica ("Hope"), bubbly ambient techno cheeriness ("Disfigured Phantasy", "Psycho Kinesis"), A Guy Called Gerald-sampling horizontal bliss ("Levitation"), ambient acid ("Stoned Soul Picnic") and sci-fi-fired Motor City techno ("A Pagan Place").

Review: According to Rafael Anton Irisarri, his first album for Dais was inspired by a desire to "focus on the personal in order to tell a wider human story" - itself a reversal of his usual more impersonal approach to music-making. Musically the eight-track set also offers a slight stylistic shift, too, with Irisarri's usual ghostly ambient chords, grandiose sound design and heavily processed electronic textures being joined by fractured snippets of choral recordings, similarly fuzzy string songs, and the kind of densely layered and intense sounds that recall the dark weightiness of heavy metal. Throw in a bittersweet and melancholic tone, and you have one of Irisarri's most striking albums to date.

Review: When he launched the "Xerrox" series way back in 2007, Alva Noto intended it to run to five volumes. Here he presents the fourth volume, which largely eschews "external samples" of everyday sounds - the series was inspired by the idea of creating new musical motifs from "copies of copies" - in favour of greater warmth, emotion and musical dexterity. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the appealing, slow-burn haziness of deep ambient opener "Xerrox Kirlian" and the distinctly cinematic, Angelo Badalamenti-in-"Twin Peaks"-mode beauty of "Xerrox Voyage", to the Radiophonic Workshop style creepiness of "Xerrox Cosmos" and the melancholic, string-laden swell of "Xerrox Canaux".

Review: Following 2012's acclaimed Red Nails album, machine manipulator, DJ, collector and music auteur, Cherrystones has been consistently working - composing, producing, editing, educating, programming, soundtracking and performing.

Biding time, considering and now ready to present the latest instalment of his journey. After completing the Critical Mass compilation - with part 2 due late 2020 - he left London for Scotland for two years to isolate. An experiment to truly find himself, with no social circle or need to engage, the objective to alchemise and create.

Building an intensive, all analogue studio running to 1/4" & 2" tape, the majority of these recordings are the emotions and moods drawn from this detoxification. The widescream Rave Digger, horror-haus Lavid Grinch show a more expansive Cherrystones. The occult beats of Uhuru Glue lead to the anthem Amaziac, with it's organic AFX rising, before again down to future beats of Silver Soarde and closer, Sethodone Recess Plant.

A musical blacksmith, a magician, conjurer... "a part of me i knew existed but have never fully spoken to or back to, i saw the sun rise and the clouds swarm, i saw dark settle and as the process speaks for itself they were aged in Bronze, dawn of man-man of dawn."

Review: Vox Populi!'s cult and highly sought after debut LP is finally reissued here after 30 years. Recorded after their first single - Ectoplasmies (1983) - between 1984 and 1985, the original band of Mitra and her (then) 14 year old brother Arash and Axel Kyrou, evolved from 2 early cassettes and the 7"s' rudimentary, idiosyncratic and improvisational structures to more cohesive edges.

Living together, but with no formal music education, the nature of the disparate elements led to a sparseness of the recordings. Influenced by his mother, the concrete music pioneer, Mireille Kyrou and her work at GRM (State Institute for Musical Research), Axel challenged his creativity by utilising their Vox Man studio as an instrument.

Building on minimal synth, rhythm box, hand percussion and Persian poetry, they experimented with tape manipulation - layering the music with forward, backward and echo simultaneously - creating a leap in the band's development.

The dark nature Myscitismes was reflected in their increasing interest in industrial and ethnic music, with a great fascination for the religious traditional music of Tibet. Ceremonial, gothic, drone-folk, the progression is apparent; onward perceptions.

Review: Kompakt have a knack for calling on their impressive pool of talent and pushing them in interesting conceptual directions. So it goes on this second volume of Velvet Desert Music, where the mysterious allure of arid climes meets with the slinky grooves of the 70s and 80s. It's a style the likes of Michael Mayer and Superpitcher can turn their hand to in style, and likewise the likes of Mount Obsidian do a stunning job capturing a dusty soundtrack atmosphere on "Ride". Look out for the jangling death funk march of Sascha Funke's "In Der Tat", a clear highlight.

Review: Mannequin and Platform 23 Records reissue what is considered to many the most complete album by perennial anarcho-outsiders Bourbonese Qualk.

The last recorded album at their South London squat, The Ambulance Station on the Old Kent Road, and again released on their own Recloose Organisation, saw the band develop further beyond the limits of the post-punk / industrial scene where genres increasingly became redundant.

Ethno, jazz, funk and EBM are all buried deep in the album as it seeks independence. The title, a critique of the Labour movements ineffective and limited call to arms against the prevailing Thatcherism of the mid-80s, encapsulates this wider oeuvre.

From opening Return To Order, the acoustic gloom is offset by tight musicianship and countering melody. The switch of Outcry precedes psychedelic anthem, Boggy Creek, with its VU remembrance. Blighted pulses Confrontation, Xenophobia, Backlash and closer, Insurrection, sense the darkness, but the ground has shifted forwards with the legendary 1.51 minutes of man'n' machine that is Lies, the enwrapping symphonic dub vocal of Born Left Hearted and incongruously pretty, Is It As It Was?

At times, suffocating, uncomfortable, at others light appears as history progresses. Preparing For Power is BQ at their most uncompromising and essential.

Review: Trauma Collective returns with four cuts of decidedly hypnotic and abstract techno from ever-prolific ASC. Rounding out the last decade with a string of stand-out releases on his own imprint, Auxiliary, the San Diego producer brings his cerebral sonic aesthetic to the fledgling Madrid label. "Loop Research" showcases a singular artist unbound by tempo and at the top of their game.

Green (green vinyl LP)
Cat: LITA 192G2. Rel: 26 Jun 20
