Que Se Sepa Pt 1 & 2
Cat: KD 056.
Que Se Sepa (part 1)
Que Se Sepa (part 2)
Review: A rare and new dose of lightness in master-at-work Kenny Dope's otherwise breaks-massive catalogue, as he's heard teaming up with Daniel Rojo for 'Que Se Sepa Pt. 1 & 2', a two-part single on his own Kay-Dee Records. Pulsing with Latin breaks vigour, the tune draws inspo from Roberto Roena's classic cover, fat-stacking tropical percs and pipping beats. Unobvious salsa vibes extend over the otherwise minimal beats as if by insinuation, while Daniel Rojo's vocals down anchor on said set of otherwise free-floating beats. Another wicked one from Kay-Dee, continuing his/its its tradition of spotlighting Latin-infused sounds.

Mr. And-7, Tony Lavrutz & Scruscru - "La Malanga 25"
Marelua, Scruscru & Tony Lavrutz - "Paragunde 45"
Review: Tony Lavrutz & Scruscru join forces for this latest fiery 45 rpm on Scruniversal. First up, they also call on Mr. And-7 to get involved on 'La Malanga 25', a sunny funk jam with raw horns that bring a Mexican twist to the percussive drums and lively pianos. Marelua steps up for the flip side, 'Paragunde 45', which slows things down and burns warm and bright with Portuguese vocals and plenty of gorgeous acoustic guitar trills. Both of these are primed and ready to inject Latin flavour into any set the moment the sun comes out, so are likely to fly off the shelves.

Scialla (Ritmo version)
Review: After a near three-year hiatus, Napoli's premier jazz-funk/Balearic/Afro-cosmic fusionists finally return to action with a typically colourful and awe-inspiring single on their own imprint. Sonically, it offers a subtle evolution from the sun-kissed joy of their last outing, 2023's superb Bar Mediterraneo album. In its' original A-side form, 'Scialla' is a bright, joyous slab of dancefloor-ready samba-soul laden with jaunty horns, infectious percussion and jangling acoustic guitars, topped off with a vocal sung in the band's own Neopolitan dialect. Arguably even better is the flip-side 'Ritmo version', a superb, drum-heavy studio jam where Nu Genea successfully layer up the beats, timbales and hand percussion while stripping out most of the vocals. In a word: essential!

A Gira (7")
Cat: VAMPI 45114EP.
Review: Not not recently reissued by fellow label Melodies International, Vampi Soul continues the 7" reissues fervour for A Gira, a rare 1973 cut from Rio de Janeiro's Trio Ternura: a sibling trio whose arrangements and songwriting were strengthened by filial relations. First out on Polydor, A Gira threads earthy spiritualism through Brazilian funk, layering chants and interlocking percussion into an altered-state groove, one which has quietly haunted collectors for decades. Originals fetch eye-watering sums; this version, pressed with care, offers a long-overdue chance to own a key sliver of early-70s Afro-Brazilian psychedelia.

Review: Funk Machine marks a second release on Big Baba Record for Elado who goes big with four electrifying tracks that are perfectly tooled for open-air and summer dancefloors. The title cut brings big, bright, bold disco-house anthem vibes with full-throttle vocals and piano stand, 'People' has a more Italo-disco vibe with an infectious vocal hook and nice retro bassline and 'Jah Noon' is a club-ready remix of a rare Yemeni groove that melts disco and indie-dance with an oriental twist. Last of all is the acid-infused Kwaito cut 'Johna' with classic cowbells and snaking bass. These are big tunes but they don't lack class.

I Saw The Light
Review: Tokyo's ska and rocksteady revivalists Inokasira Rangers turn in yet one of two more new 7"s after a career-length focus on similar rocksteady cover versions, reworking familiar pop giants with signature Hammond heft. One disc flips Oasis's 'Wonderwall' into a slow burning organ-led instrumental with Dunbaresque, well drummed weft, harking Kingston, Manchester or Tokyo depending on the angle of earshot. For those with a Hammond fetish, The B redoes Todd Rungren's 'I Saw The Light', rendering its melody through an especially resonant organ, clicking keypresses galore.

Vini Ouais (Art Of Tones remix)
Review: Picked out by label padrone Guts for his Straight From The Decks series, Djingo Typical Band's 'Vini Ouais' is a radiant Afro-Caribbean cut from French Guiana. Though they're hardly known besides the one track, we hope this one facilitates better biographic forensic work by future historians. What we do know is that the quietly took on a second life when Art Of Tones made an unofficial remix, depositing past the master bus a deeply affectionate rework passed between selectors like Antal and Radio Meuh. Word of mouth gave it freestanding floor legs long before it saw daylight, and now, after some anticipation, it enjoys its properest release, AOT further polishing the original's percussive heartbeat with heavier low-end and crisp production compared to the circulated remix.

Review: Second pressing of Sinsuke Fujieda's release on Superfly Records France is a stunning new entry in the world of Japanese modal and spiritual jazz featuring five original compositions. This live-recorded album pairs Fujieda's emotive saxophone with Fumiko Takeshita's expressive violin and Shinichi Tsukamoto's masterful piano work and the resulting sounds transcend jazz traditions. It evokes vivid imagery and deep emotion, especially on 'Fukushima,' a tender tribute to the 2011 earthquake's impact. With its raw yet refined energy, this beautiful record captures both the healing spirit and exploratory nature of contemporary Japanese jazz. A moving listen.

Review: First released in 2003 and long out of reach for collectors, Contrasts finds Marcos Valle folding early 2000s production into ever-fluid Brazilian songwriting. Now on a double vinyl reissue through Far Out, the record snags a protracted moment of creative stretch, where samba, bossa, baiao and pop intertwine with broken beat, house and trip-hop textures. 'Parabens' and 'Agua De Coco' became cult favourites, the former sampled by Childish Gambino and flipped by Tom Misch and Misa Negra. Produced by Roc Hunter with Valle's wife Patricia Alvi on vocals, plus Robertinho Silva and Azymuth's Alex Malheiros, Contrasts finally gets its due, complete with 'Valeu' and 'My Nightingale' on vinyl for the first time.

Willow
Review: Olympia jazz collective Obridor, active from 1976 to 2006, spent three decades shifting through line-ups under the steady direction of keyboardist Michael Moore. With contributions from drummer Steven Bentley, saxophonists Vincent Soluna and Tom Russell, and multi-instrumentalist Walter Thomas Russell, the group produced a rich, often overlooked catalogue. Two standouts from their archive now land on vinyl for the first time: 'Blink Samba' and 'Willow'. The forme, recorded in 1983 at Russian Hill Studios, San Francisco, is a high-velocity percussive burner with a sharp Latin curve, pulled from a full album session that didn't see digital release until 2023. On the flip, 'Willow' throws you straighter-up into a jagged bassline and restless pulse.

Review: Grupo Yoyi's rare gem 'Paco La Calle' comes from 1977 and is now available on its own 45rpm for the first time ever, and is a fine window into the artist's pioneering blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz, funk and disco. Originally released on Cuba's iconic Egrem label, it's the only known solo project from producer Jorge Soler. It's brimming with lush horn arrangements and warm analogue synths, so both sides effervesce with genre-crossing spirit that feels timeless even now, almost half a century on. These are the sort of sounds that are perfect for both soundtracking a sunlit afternoon or heating up a dancefloor and will have Latin fusion freaks and crate-diggers alike in a spin.

Review: First pressed in the early 70s and recorded at EMI Lagos, Tidiani Kone Et Le TP Orchestre Poly-Rythmo finds the prolific titular house band - responsible for around and perhaps more than 500 songs in a variety of styles for local Cotonou record labels - bound to Ghanaian saxophonist Tidiani Kone, the latter known for his work with the Rail Band and his influence on a young Fela Kuti. The session spans two hefty, hypnotic grooves rooted in Afrobeat but filtered through psych, soul and highlife, all rendered with a rare studio clarity for the era. This is the first reissue of the album, revived by London-based label Acid Jazz as part of its ongoing work curating the Albarika Store archive.

Review: The Ethiopian Brothers first drew attention in 2019 with 'Ashadwa', a fiery Afro-funk 7" that tricked more than a few crate-diggers into thinking it was a vintage rarity. It wasn't: the brains behind it is a contemporary UK-based producer with ties to Jalapeno Records, building studio-crafted mirages from scratch. Their second 7", 'Selassie Parts 1 & 2', continues that illusionist streak. 'Part 1' is a tight, Tony Allen-style drum jam shot through with fuzzed-out guitar, low-slung bass and urgent sax phrases. 'Part 2' rides that same groove deeper, layering in call-and-response vocals and writhing horn riffs that feel like they're spiralling upward. The piece sounds like a delicious salami-slice of wax left to marinate since 1974.

Part 2 now drops in quick succession and is another summer-ready blend of disco, funk, synth wave and hooky pop. 'Ardiente' is percussive, hip-swinging magic, 'Night Creatures' brings more driving grooves with withering sci-fi melodies and 'Destino Sonido' has sleek synth bass and Donna Summer vibes, while Disco 86 ups the cosmic energy with a fine remix. 'Somos Espacio' comes as lush ambient then chugging Italo, and elsewhere Matt FX brings a nice deep house rework to close.

Review: Taeko Ohnuki's second album Sunshower first broke in July 1977, hastening the evolution of city pop even before it developed the name. With the mythic Ryuichi Sakamoto enlisted for musical direction, the record married J-pop, smooth jazz, and rock, as 'Summer Connection', 'Tokai', and 'Kusuri Wo Takusan' fleshed out and diffracted Ohnuki's introspective lyrics and melodic sensuality. Despite only modest initial commercial success, Sunshower garnered critical acclaim over time for its sophisticated arrangements, standing out and tall among a thick canopy of similarly flighty-slick city pop records, most of which lack that extra Sakamoto *something*.

Review: This vinyl-only survey refracts Okinawan folk traditions through vivid jazz-funk and big band arrangements, creating a prismatic, highly listenable archive of Japan's southern soul. Kiyoshi Yamaya's influence runs deep, his arrangements glowing with cinematic elegance on 'Ryukyu Miyabi 2' through to the festival-like drive of 'Ryukyu No Matsuri 1'. The percussive triptych 'Nishinjo-bushi/Asadoya Yunta/Tanchame' shifts with deft energy, while his solo pieces like 'Ryukyu No Sora' feel airier, almost impressionistic. Tadaaki Misago & Tokyo Cuban Boys stir big band verve into 'Tanchame-bushi' and 'Hatoma-bushi', while Minoru Murayama's 'Asadoya Yunta' leans more contemplative. Kifu Mitsuhashi's takes on 'Tanchame' and 'Asadoya Yunta' feel grounded in breath and space, balancing the brassier moments with shakuhachi-led intimacy. The sequencing cleverly blurs the line between groove-heavy reimagination and respectful homage, shaping a dialogue that's rhythmic, emotive and alive. A treasure trove for collectors of Wamono, Asian jazz and crossover rarities and a striking monument to the genreless fluidity of folk, when placed in the right hands.

Review: Yoshiko Sai, one of Japan's most revered singers from the 1970s, gears up to release her entire discography on limited-edition coloured vinyl, settling the score of fan demand. After a 30-year hiatus following her 1978 album Cho no Sumu Heya, Sai returned to releasing with the mesmeric world contained on Taklamakan (2008), which was made with the aid of longtime collaborators Seiichi Yamamoto and Takeharu Hayakawa. With Sai's own illustrations on the cover, we're met with a fine, satinet art pop and vocal jazz comeback here, with the colour and title representing the vast Taklamakan desert in China's Xinjiang region.

Monsieur Van Pratt - "Dumi"

Cinema Paradisco - "Track Sin Nombre"
Review: Vision of Love is all about slow motion, soul-drenched grooves and after two solid statements to that effect, now comes a third. This one, curated by Monsieur Van Pratt, is a collection of all-Mexican talent and the man himself also features. He opens up with 'Without U', which is a sensuous deep disco percolator, before Vincent Galgo's '(La Otra) Vida' brings some steamy Latin energy to percussive grooves and Van Pratt then has a second go with 'Dumi' featuring Spanish vocals and colourful horns over a rolling bassline. Ele Cinco's 'Limited Love' is a blissed out and late night charmer, then Cinema Paradisco shuts down with nice squelchy synth bass and undulating drums on 'Track Sin Nombre.'

Review: Curated for vinyl lovers and with a discerning ear for history, the Vintage Sounds series dives into regional genres and iconic repertoires, offering carefully assembled snapshots of foundational music scenes around the world. The Vintage Sounds Vinyl series rerolls with a fresh installment, once more celebrating the vibrant traditions of Cuban music. 16 essential tracks trace the island's rumba roots and rhythms, represented by such Cuban sonic legates as Compay Segundo, Johnny Pacheco y Su Charanga, and Perez Prado. Heady and eclectic stylistic combos leapfrog by way of a lively cross-section: mambo, son, charanga and more.

Review: A new Glasshouse acoustic session from Ze Ibarra, Dora Morelenbaum and Julia Mestre (three-quarters of Brazilian MPB supergroup Bala Desejo) snaps the group at a most intimate moment. While Lucas Nunes was back in Brazil performing with Caetano Veloso (a neat parallel, given the group's debts to Tropicalia), the trio held court in Brooklyn, where cross nine stripped-down tracks, they revisit material from their debut LP Sim Sim Sim and interpret classics by Dorival Caymmi, Caetano and Chico Buarque with a natural warmth and vocal blend with enough novel aspiration to entirely sidesteps nostalgia. Loose and luminous, the session feels less like a performance and more like a gathering, part homage, part continuation of the lineage they draw from.

Review: Midnight Cruisin' was Japanese city pop incumbent Kingo Hamada's fourth album, and a standout from his Alpha Moon years. Again reissued but this time on cobalt blue vinyl, we're once again reintroduced to a genius work in the soft-lit world of Japanese AOR, with rich session work from guitarist and longtime collaborator Makoto Matsushita helping see through and execute its nighttime streetlight-trailed vision in sound. The record distills Hamada's mid-career shift towards eventidal sounds with cleaner production and mellower tempi, a formula which occasionally otherwise collapses into lachrymosity on the string-slathered ballad 'A Faint Illusion'.

This one the same format as the first instalment, but ups the energy: the A pairs 'Celebration Of Life Pt. 1' and 'Pt. 2', two percussion-driven floor bombs dropped only at those strategic points promising optimum floor grovelly mischief. Flip for 'No Friends', a looser, funkier roller with sticky vocal chops and slippery basslines, and 'We Go Disco', a joy-soaked closer whose nonetheless robust beats come turned towards the sun with the hardiness of an arctic poppy.

Review: Sai Yoshiko, a defining figure in Japan's 1970s popular music sphere, has set about releasing her many masterpieces once again, after an earlier round of 2021 reissues sold out in a flash. Now, again, they're all available on limited edition coloured vinyl. And one standout among them is her 1978 album Chou No Sumu Heya, which diffuses a gourmand jazz, hearing her accompanied by the talented Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio. The album is a potent sonic thurible, incensing us to join Yoshiko in her alternate sonic world. On a note of radical negativity, after the album's creation, Sai remarked, "I can no longer write songs that I like," suggesting the worthwhile depletion of a vital inner resource.

Review: Alick Nkhata's recordings are a revelation of Zambian modernity in motion. A broadcaster, archivist and musician, his work connects the intimate voice of the people to the broader sweep of independence-era optimism and unrest. Drawing on Bemba tradition, but unafraid of experimentation, Nkhata moves between bluesy slide guitar ('Fosta Kayi'), township big band flourishes ('Shalapo'), and rich vocal interplay ('Imbote'), all while weaving social commentary into sonic innovation. The yodeling cries of 'Nalikwebele Sonka' echo with warning, while 'Mayo Na Bwalya' channels maternal grief into a haunting, folkloric hymn. 'Kalindawlo Ni Mfumu' and 'Fodya' show Nkhata's deft use of rhythm and harmony to reflect both rural roots and urban sprawl. These aren't simply songs-they're cultural documents, captured as Zambia stepped into its postcolonial identity.

Review: Recorded live in a single session when at just 18, this album marks the launch of Sao Luisian Tania Maria's career, blending samba, bossa nova and jazz fusion into her sound foundations; self-taught, she balanced a law degree and family life before a full commitment to music. Produced by Romeo Nunes, the record is a knotty patchwork of Musica Brasiliera pioneers, be they drummer Edison Machado - known for inventing "samba no prato," a cymbal technique that shaped the rhythms of Jobim, Getz and Milton Nascimento - and guitarist Neco, veteran student of Guerra Peixe and Moacir Santos. Early samba standards come aside fresh redubs with Caetano Veloso and Marcos Valle, highlighting the roots of Tania Maria's virtuosic piano and vocal style.

Review: Amsterdam DJ and radio host Coco Maria launches her own label with Club Coco: New Dimensions In Latin Music, an eleven-track comp moving fluidly over borders and moods. It's less a genre piece than a dispatch from a loosely connected global scene, spanning Bogota, Naples, Lima, Amsterdam and New York; digital cumbias crunch up against vintage vamps and tsking percussion workouts; there's even space for whispered vocals and polyrhythmic tangents, but nothing feels forced or overly polished. Not to pin dopwn a particular sound, the collection works as a proof of concept, tuned to gut feeling over taxonomies; each contribution acts like a window cracked open to a different city.

Awa Odori
Review: Released in 1980 and arranged by jazz polymath Norio Maeda, Japanese Classical Arts is one of the boldest entries in the long-running discography of Tokyo-based Latin big band the Tokyo Cuban Boys. Founded in 1949 by conductor Naotero Misuna (sobriqueted "Maestro Misuna") the group eked a singular fusion of Afro-Cuban trad, swing, jazz and Japanese folk forms. Further to this, the LP pulls off a daring synthesis of Minyo, Latin percussion and electric jazz. It opens with a dramatic take on 'Sakura Sakura' pivoting from burning Cuban grooves to proggish intensity. 'Genroku Hanami Odori' and 'Awa Odori' are completely reimagined, aided by Kohachiro Miyata's shakuhachi and Tadao Sawai's koto. A rare high watermark in the Wa-Jazz canon.

Astropical
Astropical (gatefold pink vinyl LP)
Cat: CI 2903701. Rel: 01 Aug 25
Review: Astropical's debut album of the same name ring-pits heavyweights from Colombia's Bomba Estereo and Venezuela's Rawayana, but steers clear of nostalgia or retread. Astropical is a pan-South American project dialled into floor freqs but hotwired behind with spiritual and astrological themes. Over 12 tracks, we've interwoven tropical rhythms, Afro-diasporic percussion and clipped electronics, incurring a loose-limbed, never-sweltering sweat. Li Saumet and Beto Montenegro's chemistry sparks like flintstone zing on lead single 'Me Pasa (Piscis)'; the album tags each track to a zodiac sign, turning club culture into a kind of cosmic language.
