Mike Shawe - "Heartbreaker"

Real Deal - "Hey Love"
Sparkling Attitude - "Zio Roberto"
Review: Having unleashed six EPs featuring their own edits of mostly obscure disco and boogie treats, Italian twosome G&B have decided to do a 'guest edition' of their popular 12" rework series. The A-side has a Bristol flavour, as two renowned West Country crate diggers step up to the plate. Mike Shawe delivers 'Heartbreaker', a perfectly executed tweak of a low-slung, lightly synth-splattered independent disco number blessed with super-soulful lead vocals, before Community Discos chief Admin lays down the loose-limbed disco-funk excellence of 'Alive & Well'. Over on side B, Real Deal get the party well and truly started with the horn-heavy disco-boogie joy of 'Hey Love', while Sparkling Attitude make merry with a Latin funk shuffler on the superb 'Zio Roberto'.

Review: The magnificent Mukatsuku returns with another superb little package here on limited 12". It features the Afro disco sounds of Fred Fisher Atalobhor And His Ogiza Dance Band firstly on 'WTFS' which was originally released back in 1981. It's a booty-wiggling cut with myriad funky lines, squelchy synth motifs, lush chords and soul drenched vocals that bring the sunshine and party in equally playful measure. On the flip is 'Ebi Lolo' which is defined by its big brass section and loosey-goose guitar lines, bright chords and subtle funk. Two great gems once more from this on point label.

Review: Brooklyn record distributor Atypical-dopeness offer the next edition in Joaquin Joe Claussell's Unofficial Edits & Overdubs series. Following a four-tracker of largely unnamed tracks released in 2020, Iboga continues the series, this time with an iterative avatar to top up Claussell's ever-moving house continuum. Claussell's output has lately taken on an ancestral turn, influenced by the hallucinations caused by chewing the roots of an iboga plant, a chemico-spiritual fixture of initiation ceremonies found across Central Africa (whether Claussell actually did take ibogaine isn't clear). What we do know is that, in dialogue with his heritage, Claussell found himself inspired by these initiatory rituals and so set about producing this eleven-track heart-rouser, fusing the overdubbed recorded sounds of Gabon, Cameroon and Congo with his own summative, spiritual, salubrious house sound.

This 7" gem merges many styles and influences into one. On Side-1, 'Say You Love Me Girl' showcases a smooth and soulful blend of styles, highlighted by powerful vocal performance. It's a track that effortlessly bridges different musical influences, creating an engaging and catchy pop hit. Underneath it all, you have funk, salsa and disco all blending into a classy gem. The debut features some real dancefloor essentials starting with 'Sawanna,' an Afro-disco banger with a driving beat and captivating vocals while 'Baby Music' offers a funky bassline and infectious hooks. 'Discochari' is a rare Armenian disco track reworked into a global anthem that is sure to have everyone chanting along. Last but not least is Antal favourite 'I Wanna' which is a high-energy Afro-disco track designed for late-night, fast-paced moments that won't be soon forgotten.

Review: This superb new Jazz Room Records compilation showcases a vibrant mix of world genres that innovatively blend funk, J-jazz, Afro-Cuban, and boogaloo influences. The tracks range from the heavy Latin jazz energy of 'Bolivia 67' to the 1970s kung fu-inspired groove of 'Tong King Rock.' They all add up to a colourful collection that plays out with nice cohesion overall but also offers up some high class DJ weaponry. Along the way, the record takes in further highlights like 'Eastern Folktale' and the lively rhythms of standouts like 'Jump Up Life' which help to make this such a gem for the collection.

Review: Invisible Inc's latest compilation EP, Mondo Ritmo, is a rhythmic exploration that spans the globe, featuring diverse influences from Latin and Afro to dub, dancehall, and acid. Building on the momentum of last year's Mondo Organico, this release places a strong emphasis on percussion and rhythm, making it a compelling addition to the label's catalog. The EP kicks off with 'Cabasa Loca' by Mytron & Balam, a track that's already proven its dancefloor prowess, with label head GK Machine spinning it regularly at his Wrong Party nights. Tom Chasteen's 'Wicked Can't Run,' a house and dancehall fusion, also stands out, featuring Jamaican legend U Brown and mixed by the iconic David Harrow. While the remaining tracks might not be peak-time anthems, they offer something for the more adventurous listener. Thomass Jackson, Thomash, and GATS, as Changa Boys, deliver a rich percussive experience with Senegalese drummer Ndiaxo dal Jaam, while Congo Caveman assists on the mysterious Machine's contribution. Mondo Ritmo is a vibrant, eclectic compilation that promises to captivate both seasoned dancers and rhythm enthusiasts alike.

Khaled Barkat - "Galouli Ensaha"
Cheb Tati - "Dub El Hammam"
Khaled Barkat - "Zourini"
Asif - "Tafsut"
Review: Bongo Joe and Sofa Records' third instalment of the Maghreb K7 Club Disco Single series dives deep into Algeria's vibrant 1980s scene, offering four tracks that shine a light on the region's overlooked gems. The A-side is led by two irresistible pop-boogie-funk tracks from Khaled Barkat: 'Galouli Enshara' and 'Zourini'. Self-taught and self-produced in 1983, Barkat's music was a hit at the time but got overshadowed by the rising tide of rai. His dynamic collaboration with Yazid Fentazi, Redouane Ayoub, and Mhenni Benlala resulted in a sound that blends infectious grooves with local flair. Now, for the first time, these tracks are on vinyl, offering fresh ears the chance to rediscover a key player in Algeria's pop history. Cheb Tati takes over on the B-side with 'Dub El Hammam', a heavyweight dub number that showcases his range as a rai vocalist. Tati was flown to London in 1989 to work with dub pioneer Denis Bovell, and this track is a standout from their sessions, merging the pulsating rhythms of reggae with a distinctly North African flavour. Closing out the release is the Kabyle band Asif, whose only known recording, 'Tafsut', serves as a fitting finale. Formed by three brothers in Lille during the late 70s, this beautifully crafted pop-boogie track captures the band's unique sound, bringing a sense of nostalgia and triumph to the collection.

Review: Now available in long-awaited LP form, Kenichiro Nishihara's second LP Life is issued via Urban Discos. Aiming to capture the essence of life in 12 tracks, the record, originally released in January 2010, fuses the blissed-out, piano-drenched Tokyo hip-hop sound with an advanced jazztronica palette and deals in themes of blessings, personal philosophy and stoical musings on everyday hardship but ultimate satisfaction. The rap features from Substantial, Steph Pockets, Amanda Diva, Pismo, Nina Vidal, Kissey Asplund and Gregg Green occur alternately between solo instrumentals from Nishihara himself; all tracks in the first category almost all deal in themes of flourishing and authenticity in day-to-day life, while those in the latter box serve as felicitous personal soundtracks for those cathartic revelations that can only arise through experience and dialogue.

Egyptian Reggae

Review: Jonathan Richman's 'Egyptian Reggae' has been setting discerning dancefloors alight since its release in 1977, during the golden era of punk. Known for its infectious rhythm, the track has seen a few reggae remixes over the years. However, it was time for something freshia playful yet respectful cumbia twist. Both genres share a certain groove, making them a perfect match, and it's easy to imagine DJs weaving these sounds together in their sets. This new take on 'Egyptian Reggae' has been recorded in Lima by Pancho Acosta, the founder and guitarist of Company Quinto, and one of Peru's finest cumbia guitarists. Acosta brings his expert touch to the track, transforming it into an upbeat cumbia gem. On the flip side, we're treated to one of Acosta's own originals, 'Carnaval de Jujuy', recorded by Austin-based future cumbia outfit Money Chicha. The song blends Peru's fuzzed-out early chicha sound with Money Chicha's unique, modern interpretation of the genre, delivering a fresh, captivating cumbia vibe.

Review: Marcos Valle's 23rd studio album, Tunel Acustico, is a sweeping blend of the Brazilian legend's six-decade career, from his iconic bossa nova beginnings to jazz-funk and LA disco. Valle, who has worked with names like Sergio Mendes and Leon Ware, pulls together past and present on this release. With two members of the renowned Brazilian jazz-funk group Azymuth on board, the rhythm section sets a lively foundation for Valle's soulful melodies. Highlights include 'Feels So Good,' a groovy 1979 collaboration with Leon Ware, freshly updated with AI stem-separation and new Portuguese lyrics, and 'Life Is What It Is,' a disco-infused track co-written with Chicago's Laudir De Oliveira. Guest lyricists such as Ceu and Moreno Veloso add a contemporary flair, while the closing track, 'Thank You Burt (For Bacharach),' pays homage to the legendary composer. With its dynamic mix of samba, soul, and timeless grooves, Tunel Acustico is another standout in Valle's storied career.

Review: Hot on the heels of their High Tide In The Lowlands LP for Sub Rosa, mesmerising Egyptian psych-rock and free improvisers Dwarfs Of East Agouza release two live recordings on this 7" for Unrock. A-side cut 'Speaking In Tongues' was recorded at Les Ateliers Claus in September 2017, with additional mixing in 2021 from Adam Zidan. On the flip, 'Organism 46-B' was recorded in 2015 in Alexandria, Egypt at a venue called El Cabina. Both sessions capture a band unbound by rockist conventions, sometimes locking into a shapely groove and other times freewheeling through disjointed noise, as is the free improvisation way.

Review: Since 2019, Ryozo Band have attracted the attention of fans both in their native Japan and overseas, owing to their deft workings in the realm of jazz-funk and fusion, all tempered by a buzzing affective irreverence. In 2023, they released the 'Utopia' EP, and now follow up said award-winner with yet another, equally affecting EP-form homage to all things felicific and dopaminergic: 'Pleasure'. Kicking off with an impressive, minimalist keyboard exposition, the Ryozo formula soon unfurls as a counterpoint of uptempo wrist-flicked drumming and two horns in unison, overlaid further by sax, trumpet and synth saw. Heavily borrowing from rhythmic and vibeish trends in the current UK jazz scene, 'Pleasure' is a synaptic surge of various sonic serotonins and oxytocins, amounting to what is best describable both as a qualitative and quantitative hedonic calculation in jazz.

Review: Pique is the remarkable debut solo album from Dora Morelenbaum, a key figure in Brazil's burgeoning music scene and a member of the talented band Bala Desejo. Following her initial EP Vento de Beirada, Pique marks Dora's ascent as a significant solo artist, blending boldness with grace, bridging Brazil's musical heritage with contemporary grooves, incorporating funk, MPB, disco, soul, r&b and jazz, all infused with an indie pop sensibility thanks to co-producer Ana Frango Eletrico. Opening with the sun-kissed 'Nao Vou Te Esquecer,' Pique transitions into the infectious funk of 'Venha Comigo' and 'Sim, Nao.' Tracks like 'A Melhor Saida' and 'Petricor' offer a more relaxed, introspective vibe, while 'VW Blue' showcases virtuosic jazz-funk, and the title track delivers radiant MPB. The drumming is crisp and swung, the horns and strings are meticulously arranged, and the basslines groove with a funky energy, complemented by strutting guitars and vibrant production flourishes. Dora's hands-on approach to the albumifrom songwriting to arranging and producingiensures a cohesive vision. Supported by a talented ensemble, including her Bala Desejo bandmates and her renowned parents, Paula and Jaques Morelenbaum, Pique merges tradition with modernity. An endlessly listenable album, poised to become a future Brazilian classic, blending the spirit of legends like Gal Costa with a fresh, innovative edge.

This final collaboration with improvisational salsa singer Chamaco Ramirez features chart-topping hits like 'Trucutu,' 'Plante Bandera,' and the bongo-driven 'Evelio y La Rumba.' Known for his signature blend of melodic and swing styles paired with a big brass sound, Tommy Olivencia was instrumental in shaping the Puerto Rican salsa sound. Plante Bandera produced by Luis "Perico" Ortiz, features compositions by Tite Curet Alonso, Jose Febles, Louie Cruz, and others. The title track, a self-empowering anthem, became one of Olivencia's biggest hits. Whether revisiting the energetic 'Evelio y La Rumba' or the sentimental 'Como novela de amor,' Plante Bandera remains a masterpiece of salsa music.

Review: The Original Jazz Classics series makes a triumphant return with the reissue of Cal Tjader's influential 1956 album, Latin Kick. Renowned for blending Afro-Cuban rhythms with mainstream jazz elements, this album highlights Tjader's talented abilities on the vibraphone. The ensemble features brilliant performances from Brew Moore on saxophone, Luis Miranda on congas, Bayardo Velarde on timbales, Manuel Duran on piano and Carlos Duran on bass. Though the album title suggests a Latin focus, the tracks venture beyond traditional Latin music, incorporating elements of the emerging exotica genre. Latin Kick offers a global musical journey, including songs about Paris and Vermont. Despite the absence of traditional Latin brass and fervent rhythms, the album captivates with its downtempo ambiance, dreamy landscapes, and smooth tenor sax infusions. Tjader's signature vibraphone often takes a backseat, allowing the ensemble to create a cohesive, melodious, and enchanting atmosphere. The reissue of Latin Kick reaffirms the series' commitment to preserving jazz history, offering a pristine listening experience that celebrates the timeless artistry of Cal Tjader and his exceptional band.

Review: These two vinyl records house the vibrant legacy of the boogaloo movement in Peru from 1966 to 1975, showcasing 22 tracks by 17 different artists who recorded on the renowned Peruvian label MAG. Featuring standout songs by Tito Chicoma, Melcochita, Los Kintos, Otto Rojas, and Coco Lagos, among others, the collection invites a new generation to dance to these timeless grooves. While MAG was known for releasing various music styles, its focus on tropical sounds has become a favorite for DJs and collectors. The mid-60s saw Peru develop a thriving boogaloo scene, inspired by the genre's New York origins where songs like 'Bang Bang' and 'El Pito' blended Latin rhythms with soul and funk. Although boogaloo's popularity waned in New York toward the end of the 60s, it continued to thrive in Peru even as salsa music eventually took over. With this compilation, the energy of that era comes alive again, highlighting the lasting influence of boogaloo on Peruvian music and inviting listeners to rediscover these lost dancefloor gems.

This sought-after funk-folk album, previously unavailable outside Japan, captures Sai's ethereal voice and poetic songwriting, layered over Ohno's lush, funky arrangements. The music blends groovy, mid-tempo tracks like 'Yoru No Sei' with atmospheric ballads such as 'Tsubaki Wa Ochita Kaya', creating a dreamy yet grounded soundscape. Ohno's masterful production elevates the album, weaving traditional Japanese instruments like the shakuhachi and biwa into the mix, adding cultural depth to the already rich textures. The remastered audio highlights the intricate details of this beautiful fusion of folk and funk, giving Mangekyou a timeless quality. Long considered a treasure in Japan's 1970s music scene, original copies of Mangekyou have become rare and highly valuable, making this reissue a significant release for collectors and new listeners. Accompanied by original artwork and new liner notes by Paul Bowler, this first international edition provides the perfect introduction to Sai's mysterious, revered sound, allowing her music to be discovered and appreciated worldwide.

Review: A fresh Brazilian voice has emerged in London's vibrant music scene under the name MOMO. His seventh album, Gira, out on Batov Records, marks a notable departure as he blends classic Brazilian influences with a contemporary twist. Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of 1970s tropicalia, Os Mutantes, and Milton Nascimento, MOMO. presents an album that incorporates a modern edge to timeless sounds. Recorded at East London's Total Refreshment Center with an ensemble of local jazz talent and Brazilian collaborators, Gira features contributions from notable musicians like Alabaster DePlume on tenor sax, Jessica Lauren on keys, Tamar Osborn on baritone sax, and Nick 'Emanative' Woodmansey on drums. This project represents MOMO.'s first London-recorded album and is a shift in focus from guitar and voice to a groove-driven approach. From its start with a rhythm-centric feel, Gira exemplifies spontaneous improvisation and dynamic songwriting. MOMO.'s journey from his acclaimed 2006 debut, A Estetica do Rabisco, to this latest release highlights his evolution. With praise from notable figures such as Patti Smith and David Byrne, and a tribute to Caetano Veloso, Gira is a testament to MOMO.'s growing influence in the global music scene.

Review: The Bongo Hop's new album 'La Pata Coja' is a brass and percussion infused Coimbra/Afrobeat/Carib adventure where the pace of its rhythms reflects a sweetly limping groove. Particularly found in its title track, this echoes the translation of its title 'La Pata Coja', where laid backness conjures up a sometimes up sometimes down bounce, as a tonic to what life hurls at you and why a loved up bit of dancing can cure all. The Bongo Hop is French trumpeter Etienne Sevet's project with Colombian friends, vocalist Nidia Gongora (the voice of Ondatropica and Quantic), rapper Maikcel (Zalama crew) and also notable producer Patchworks, on Maxime Peron and Laurent Loudier's Underdog Records, who this year celebrate 20 years of supporting the melting pot that is France's rich musical heritage. Silky seductive vocals bring the brass together and Paul Charnay's lovely keys and break outs underlay and interject into the repetitive refrains of Boris Pakora and Oliver Granger's saxophones whilst Mario Vargas maintains a super syncopated percussive rhythm section on pretty much every track. If you love an easy funkiness you'll adore 'Dekonekte' or if you prefer a nice slowed down high life guitar rhythm 'Magica Bonita' is for you, add that to an infectious uptempo and downbeat West African grooviness and you won't be disappointed, making it a must-have.

Review: La Sonora Mazuren, a vibrant force in Bogota's indie-tropical scene, infuses classic South American rhythms with a modern twist. Drawing on cumbia, chicha, guaracha, and champeta from Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru, the band skillfully merges traditional sounds with synthesisers and electric guitars. Their approach, guided by early innovators like Polibio Mayorga and Eblis Alvarez of Meridian Brothers, creates a psychedelic and forward-thinking blend reminiscent of Tropicalia's golden era. Their latest release, Magnetismo Animal, continues this innovative path. Recorded partly in rural Normandy during a European tour and finished in Bogota, the album explores the concept of animal magnetism as introduced by Franz Mesmer. Each track channels a shared trance-like energy through intricate rhythms and sound experiments. Drawing inspiration from Colombian gaita, vallenato, and cumbia, alongside Peruvian huayno and chicha, the album presents a futuristic take on Afro-Andean traditions with pulsating polyrhythms and psychedelic textures. Featuring members of Romperayo and LA PERLA, La Sonora Mazuren exemplifies Bogota's dynamic new tropical movement, merging past and present in a unique musical journey.

Camino De Flores (pink vinyl LP)
Cat: LPSHSH 20C. Rel: 22 Nov 24
Review: On Camino de Flores, El Buho crafts a stunning fusion of electronic music with the sounds of nature, creating a deeply immersive sonic journey. Drawing inspiration from Latin American rhythms and field recordings, the album blurs the line between electronic and organic, effortlessly blending IDM with natural soundscapes. Throughout the nine tracks, the rustling of leaves, bird calls and flowing water are woven into synths and drum machines, creating a seamless interaction between the digital and the natural. The album transports listeners to lush environments, from high mountain peaks to tranquil rainforests. Tracks like 'Miranda el Fuego' feature guest vocals from Joaquin Cornejo and Minuk, adding warmth to the album's textured instrumental flow. Instruments like flutes and charango enhance the album's authenticity, while the precision of the production keeps the sonic landscape clear and engaging. El Buho's ability to merge influences from IDM, folk and Latin rhythms creates a unique sound that feels both deeply rooted in tradition and forward-thinking. Camino de Flores is an album to get lost in, offering an escape into vibrant, soothing atmospheres while maintaining artistic integrity. It stands as a tranquil yet intricate work, perfect for both relaxation and deeper appreciation.

Kono Machi De Aka In This Town
Review: QASB's Kono Machi De single, released on Soul Garden Japan, is a vibrant blend of Japanese soul with jazz funk and city pop influences. Side-1 features the Shuya Okino edit of 'Kono Machi De Aka In This Town,' which emphasises a groovy rhythm, enhancing the track's infectious energy. Side-2, has the original version which delivers a feel-good mix of disco strings and a lively horn section, reminiscent of Taste of Honey. Written by Moritaka as a tribute to her hometown Kumamoto, the song includes a nod to Tomari River, a location tied to collaborator Yuichi Takahashi. Having the option of both versions make this 7" a great little 45 to have.

Cool Out Sun
Review: 'Arfrikan Hustle' is the latest 7" single by Melbourne tropicalists Cool Out Sun, the four-piece pop and Afrobeat super-troupe made up of N'fa Jones, Sensible J, Lamine Sonko and Nui Moon. Bringing a wide range of inspirations to their debut record, from traditional Afro-folk and Taaso to Afrobeat and hip-hop, 'Afrikan Hustle' is a timely dedication at once to the zeal of to hustle culture and also to African heritage, combining the low-slung Caribbean moods of dancehall and calypso in the chorus with contemporary Aussie rap in the verses, with many a musing on colonial impetuosity mixed with indefatigable, always-bounce-back hustlers' self-confidence.
